A radio host named Harold Camping is making headlines in the Washington Post, Associated Press, National Public Radio, and elsewhere this month by publicly predicting that the Rapture — the sudden disappearance of born-again followers of Jesus Christ from the earth, followed by the Biblical judgments described in the Book of Revelation as the Great Tribulation — will occur on May 21, 2011. Sadly, he is just the latest person to foolishly ignore the teachings of Jesus Christ and mislead people regarding Bible prophecy.The San Francisco Chronicle seems to be the first to have picked up the story. They reported: “Camping, 88, has scrutinized the Bible for almost 70 years and says he has developed a mathematical system to interpret prophecies hidden within the Good Book. One night a few years ago, Camping, a civil engineer by trade, crunched the numbers and was stunned at what he’d found: The world will end May 21, 2011….Employees at the Oakland office run printing presses that publish Camping’s pamphlets and books, and some wear T-shirts that read, May 21, 2011. They’re happy to talk about the day they believe their souls will be retrieved by Christ. I’m looking forward to it, said Ted Solomon, 60, who started listening to Camping in 1997. He’s worked at Family Radio since 2004, making sure international translators properly dictate Camping’s sermons.
Camping’s declaration is deeply misguided. In Matthew chapter 24, the Lord Jesus Christ gave His disciples a list of signs to watch for that would indicate when His return for His true followers was approaching. Such signs included the rise of false messiahs, wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, other natural disasters, persecution of believers, the spread of the gospel to all people in every nation, the rebirth of the nation of Israel, and so forth. But in Matthew 24:36, Christ warned His followers not to try to speculate on exact dates of His return. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone, Christ said. If no one on earth knows the date of Christ’s return, how then does Harold Camping know? He doesn’t.Yet this is not the first time Camping has been misled or misled others. In 1992, he published a book through Vantage Press in New York entitled, 1994? I actually have a copy because I have started a collection of books and pamphlets of false teachings about Bible prophecy. It’s a 552 page volume with this conclusion: The results of this study teach that the month of September of the year 1994 is to be the time for the end of history. In the following sentence he notes: We must be cautious. There could be something that has been overlooked. In view of the many paths that I have found that focus on 1994 it seems extremely unlikely that we have overlooked something. However I modestly and humbly acknowledge that such a possibility exists. (emphasis added)
Obviously, Camping was wrong. Neither the Rapture nor the end of the world occured in 1994. He did, in fact, overlook something — the words of our Lord Jesus Christ who said in Matthew 24:36 that no one knows the time of Christ’s return but the Father alone.Camping is not the only one who has refused to accept the words of Christ and have decided that they do know, and have spread such misguided and unbiblical teaching to others. In 1987, an author named Edgar C. Whisenant, for example, wrote a book published through the World Bible Society entitled, 88 Reasons Why The Rapture Could Be In 1988. On page 3, Whisenant actually cites Christ’s warning in Matthew 24:36. Yet he then proceeds to speculate with a professed near certainty that he knows what no one else knows. His conclusion: We are now in the 100th Congress of the United States, and 1987 is the 212th birthday of the Constitution of the United States. Water boils at 100 degrees centrigrade, and at 212 degrees fahrenheit. We will not see another national election; nor will we see the end of the 213th year of the Constitution (which is the end of 1988), before the war comes (World War III) which destroys us completely as a nation, before the election in November 1988 — and before the harvest 1988, on 4 October 1988.Obviously, Whisenant was wrong. Neither the Rapture nor the end of the world occured on October 4, 1988, nor at any time that year. The following year, however, he published another book explaining that the Rapture would actually happen in 1989, claiming that he had previously miscalculated. The Rapture didn’t happen then either.Such date-setting is not only unbiblical, wrong and misleading, it also invites ridicule, scorn and discredit upon followers of Jesus Christ who study the Bible seriously and teach the Word of God — including prophecy — carefully and soberly.
Jesus Christ was very clear that He is coming back. Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go and prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:1-3)The Apostle Paul was very clear in describing the Rapture that the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain [as born again believers in Christ] will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.(I Thessalonians 4:16-17)
Teachers of Bible prophecy need to be very careful. Our responsibility is not to predict when Christ will return, but to help people be ready for the Lord’s return, whenever that occurs, and especially if it is soon. We can do this by sharing the gospel, making disciples, spreading the Word, strengthening the Church, living lives of holiness and purity, and becoming men and women of prayer and worship. We also need to do this by helping people to discern the difference between solid Bible teaching and false teaching. Let’s ask the Lord to help us to serve Him wisely and humbly. Let’s also pray for Harold Camping and others that their eyes may be opened to the truth and they make make a rapid course correction.

French Minister Attacked by Gaza Mob

French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie was attacked by a mob in Gaza on Friday morning. Her attackers were enraged over statements she had allegedly made the day before supporting human rights for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.Alliot-Marie was mobbed as she entered Gaza, with a crowd surrounding her car, pounding on its windows, and throwing shoes at the vehicle. One person jumped on the car. Two children were pushed in front of the first car in Alliot-Marie's convoy, forcing the convoy to a stop while the attack continued.One sign at the rally had a picture of Alliot-Marie with a red cross over her face. Others called on the foreign minister to leave Gaza.Hamas police eventually stopped the furious protest and allowed the convoy to continue. Hamas leaders expressed sympathy with the rioters, saying Alliot-Marie's comments regarding Shalit reflected a total bias toward Israel.
Alliot-Marie was not hurt in the attack.She had met Thursday with the parents of Gilad Shalit. The kidnapped soldier, who Hamas claims to have in custody, holds French citizenship. Alliot-Marie assured his parents that France has not forgotten Shalit, and said she would insist that the European Union ask Hamas to allow Red Cross representatives to visit Shalit, as required by international law.According to AFP, trying to justify the incident, the Gaza mob may have mistakenly believed that Alliot-Marie termed Shalit's captivity a war crime.Shalit's father Noam had called on France to push the EU to condemn the kidnapping as a war crime, and his statement was wrongly attributed to Alliot-Marie on Israel Radio's Arabic-language website, an AFP reporter said. Army Radio upset listeners this week with its coverage of a planned housing development in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo. Left-wing presenters indicated opposition to the plan through biased language and skewed coverage.The Tadmit organization, which monitors Israeli media, called on the station to provide more balanced coverage, and to ensure that presenters' individual views do not shape news reports. Tadmit media observer Chani Luz prepared the critique.Three presenters in particular, Micah Friedman, Yael Dan, and Yoram Frost, were accused of biased coverage.Micah Friedman used language suggestive of a campaign against the construction project, saying, Has the next crisis with the United States arrived? and Will the American government soon have a thousand and four hundred new reasons for tension with Israel? Yotam Frost termed the new project a powder keg. In addition, the Good Morning Israel program he presents devoted seven minutes and thirty seconds to negative coverage regarding the project, and just 10 seconds each to responses from the Jerusalem Municipality and a City Council member affiliated with Likud, who spoke in favor of the new housing.
Yael Dan said about the construction, The Jerusalem municipality may soon create the next diplomatic conflict.The project in question had previously been announced and was nothing new, but it made the news again after getting approval from the Jerusalem District Planning Commission, thus passing one step of many in the bureaucratic process that precedes the construction of new homes. The project is set to include 1,400 much-needed housing units in Gilo, in southern Jerusalem.The Palestinian Authority claims Gilo, and all other Jerusalem neighborhoods east, south and north of the 1949 armistice line, all termed East Jerusalem by the media, as part of the capital city of an Arab state it hopes to establish in Judea and Samaria. PA leaders have accused Israel of undermining the diplomatic process by continuing to build in the capital despite their demands. Natural urban population expansion makes this building a normal process for the Jerusalem municipality.

The host country, the UK, is led by the eurosceptic Conservative Party. Out of the nine countries that took part, only Estonia and Finland use the euro. Iceland has started accession talks, but EU officials believe Icelanders will reject membership in a future poll. Norway has rejected membership in two past referendums.The event comes at a time when several southern European economies - Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain - are battling the threat of sovereign debt default in what could become an existential crisis for the EU's single currency and the EU itself.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron told press that the northern countries aim to create an economic avant-garde.Right across the north of Europe, there stretches an alliance of common interests. We get enterprise. We embrace innovation. We understand the potential of green technologies for economic growth. Attacks force closure of EU's emissions trading system

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - A series of cyber-attacks on national registries where carbon permits are stored has forced the closure of the EU's emissions trading system (ETS) for at least a week. The European Commission posted the announcement on its website on Wednesday (19 January) after Czech Republic-based firm Blackstone Global Ventures said about €6.8 million of carbon allowances appeared to have disappeared.Thefts on electronic registries in Austria, Greece, Poland and Estonia have also been reported in recent days.Incidents over the last weeks have underlined the urgent need for enhanced security measures, the commission said while announcing the closure of the bloc's ETS system until at least the 26 January. By placing a price on carbon, Europe's trading system is designed to lower company emissions and therefore protect the environment from global warming.Firms received emission permits for free under the first phase (2005-2007) of the scheme, with some forced to pay for a portion of their permits under the current phase (2008-2012). Brussels wants to see energy companies buy all their permits from 2013 onwards, with other heavy industries gradually phased in by 2020.
The system is the world's largest of its kind, with US plans for a similar cap-and-trade scheme being blocked by the country's senate last year. China experts suggest pilot ETS projects could appear in Beijing's next five-year plan, set to be approved in March.Despite its pioneering position, Europe's ETS system has attracted criticism over its six years of operation, with some businesses saying it threatens the bloc's competitiveness, while NGOs argue emission thresholds have been set too high.Wednesday's announcement and similar cyber-attacks have also damaged the EU initiative, together with reports of tax fraud and the recycling of used credits.
They will over time undermine the credibility of carbon trading as a policy measure, Kjersti Ulset said of the cyber-attacks. Ms Ulset is a manager at Point Carbon, a company that reports on Europe's emission trading, carried out in a network of registries across the union.After noticing an unauthorised trade on its account on Wednesday, Blackstone contacted Czech registry OTE AS, which promptly closed operations and began an investigation.Paris-based BlueNext SA, operator of the world's biggest spot exchange for permits, then followed suit, as did registries in Poland and Estonia before the EU imposed a region-wide shutdown.

Scheduled as a discussion on Hungary's presidency priorities for the next six months, the controversial media law dominated discussion and prompted a number of MEPs to display white banners with the single word censored.
In his introductory speech Mr Orban repeated the government's willingness to change the law if a European Commission legal opinion finds it to be at fault, but Socialist, Liberal and Green group leaders called for a complete scrapping of the legislation.Introduced at the start of this month, the contentious act establishes a media council to ensure balanced reporting, and requires all media types to be registered, including online media such as forums and blogs. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU's police mission in Kosovo, Eulex, has begun laying the groundwork for an investigation into claims that Kosovar Prime Minister Hashim Thaci is responsible for murdering Serb prisoners and selling their kidneys in the 1990s.Eulex chief prosecutor Isabelle Arnal and Kosovar deputy prosecutor Sevdije Morina met with Albanian counterparts in Tirana on Tuesday (18 January) to seek assurances that Albanian authorities would co-operate in the probe.It's the first meeting of this type and it's too early say [if Tirana will help out], a Eulex spokeswoman told EUobserver on Wednesday morning.She added that Eulex some three weeks ago sent a letter requesting hard evidence from Dick Marty, a Swiss politician who put forward the Thaci accusations in a report for the Council of Europe in December. We know he has received the letter but we don't know what he's going to provide, the spokeswoman said. I hope that you will agree that the article's obvious bias and numerous distortions are not worthy of the standards of your prestigious magazine.Israelis depicted in the article as essentially sliding towards fascism. Your correspondent refers to Israel's Shin Bet (the equivalent of the FBI) as a secret police, claims that the Israeli government increasingly equates dissent with disloyalty, and accuses the Prime Minister of taking a page from neighboring authoritarian states.
The evidence offered for these outrageous allegations includes a preliminary vote in our parliament that would require naturalized citizens to make a pledge of allegiance, a proposal to strip citizenship from Israelis convicted of espionage and terrorism, a motion to investigate foreign government funding of local NGOs, calls on Jews to not rent property to Arabs, and demonstrations demanding prohibitions of Arab boys from dating Jewish girls.But your correspondent did not find it necessary to inform your readers of a few facts.Oaths of allegiance are commonplace in most democratic countries, including the United States. Naturalized citizens in America swear an oath to its Constitution and to defend the country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Israel's proposed pledge would require naturalized citizens to swear an oath to Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, words taken directly from our Declaration of Independence.Moreover, Great Britain, France, Germany, and Italy are just some of the many countries where citizenship can be stripped for various infractions that are defined as undermining national interests. Are these European countries not democratic? In the United States, Senator Joe Leiberman proposed a bill last year to add joining a foreign terrorist organization or engaging in or supporting hostilities against the United States or its allies to the list of acts for which United States nationals would lose their nationality. Is American democracy threatened by such a bill?
As for questioning the legitimacy of foreign government funding of Israeli NGOs, mentioning America's Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) may have presented a more balanced picture.FARA requires that any organization engaged in lobbying in the U.S. that receives money from foreign individuals, let alone foreign governments, must among other things register as a foreign agent with the Department of Justice and permit the Attorney General to inspect all of its activities.It is hard to imagine any democratic country accepting foreign governments intervening in its domestic affairs by funding domestic groups engaged not merely in criticism of a particular government's policy but also attacking the very foundations of the State.What would Britain do if the French government was actively funding a British NGO that sought to eliminate the monarchy? What would the United States do if the Iranian government was funding American NGOs pressing for a withdrawal of US forces from the Middle East? There is a vigorous public debate in Israel, including within the Likud party, over the best means to address the problem of foreign government funding of local NGOs. Proposals range from launching a parliamentary investigation to laws banning or restricting such funding to measures to ensure full transparency. Far from being a sign of Israel's slide toward fascism, the current debate in Israel is a testament to how vibrant our democracy truly is.
Finally, contrary to the implication of your correspondent, Prime Minister Netanyahu has publicly and forcefully condemned the racist sentiments that were mentioned in the article. For example, this is what the Prime Minister said at the opening of Israel's annual Bible Quiz to an audience of mostly observant Jews a few hours after he learned of the letter calling on Jews not to rent apartments to Arabs:There are non-Jews among the citizens of this country. How would we feel if someone said not to sell apartments to Jews? We would have been outraged, and indeed we are outraged when we hear such things in neighboring countries or anywhere else. Such statements should not be made, neither about Jews nor about Arabs. They must not be made in any democratic country, let alone a Jewish-democratic country that respects the moral values of the Jewish heritage and the Bible. Therefore, the State of Israel categorically rejects these things.Contrast this unequivocal condemnation by the leader of Israel to the Palestinian Authority law that mandates the death penalty for any one who sells land to Jews. Such laws are all too common in a Middle East in which Christians are persecuted, gays are hanged in public squares and women are stoned for adultery.In Israel, things are different. Here, we protect the rights of women, gays and minorities, including the 20% of Israelis who are Arabs, who enjoy freedom of speech and religion and the protections afforded by independent courts and the rule of law.Every decision in Israel is put under the microscope by one of world's largest foreign press contingents, the hundreds of human rights organizations and NGOs that operate freely here, a famously adversarial local press and most critically, by a vociferous parliamentary opposition.

It's Proven: Bilin Woman Died of Overdose, not IDF Gas

An IDF investigation has found that Jawaher Abu Rahma, who PA leaders accused Israel of killing, actually died due to a doctor's mistake. The PA had claimed that Abu Rahma died after inhaling tear gas as PA rioters clashed with Israeli soldiers near the Samaria separation/security barrier.The investigation found that Rahma was not at the demonstration, but was in a house nearby. Initial PA reports had implied that she was at the demonstration; however, when pictures of the protest did not show her presence, it was then reported that she had been overcome by tear gas at home.
However, the IDF found that Rahma was not taken to a hospital during or immediately after the protest, but only later in the day.Once in the Ramallah hospital, Rahma was given unusually high doses of Atropine, a drug whose uses include countering nerve gas or speeding up a dangerously slow pulse. The drug apparently caused her death, investigators said.Documents received by the IDF also provided additional evidence for the theory that Rahma had been seriously ill prior to the demonstration, possibly with cancer.IDF commanders planned to meet last week with PA officials to brief them on the ongoing investigation. Activists from the Shilo region in Samaria made their way to Jerusalem on Wednesday to protest outside the home of Arik Asherman, a Reform rabbi who heads the group Rabbis for Human Rights. The protesters accused Asherman of inciting violence in Samaria in the name of peace.Asherman and a small group of fellow activists often accompany Palestinian Authority Arabs when they attempt to farm near Jewish areas, or areas off-limits for planting. He plans to accompany PA Arabs in planting olive trees near the Jewish village of Adei Ad in Binyamin.Jews in the region say Asherman encourages PA Arabs to approach Jewish villages, where they often fight with Jewish youth. The leftist activists and the Palestinians came up here to fight with the Jewish residents, one resident said, referring to a fight last week near Shilo in which three Jewish youths and one PA man were injured.
We usually have good relations [between Jews and Arabs], but there are those who try to incite violence in order to make us look bad, he said.Another demonstrator criticized Asherman for planning to plant trees for PA residents on Tu B'Shvat, a Jewish holiday celebrating trees and the land of Israel. Even on a Jewish holiday, he goes to celebrate with the Arabs, he charged.Asherman told Arutz Sheva that we have a problem with the settlements... We need to end the occupation. Scheduled as a discussion on Hungary's presidency priorities for the next six months, the controversial media law dominated discussion and prompted a number of MEPs to display white banners with the single word censored.
In his introductory speech Mr Orban repeated the government's willingness to change the law if a European Commission legal opinion finds it to be at fault, but Socialist, Liberal and Green group leaders called for a complete scrapping of the legislation.Introduced at the start of this month, the contentious act establishes a media council to ensure balanced reporting, and requires all media types to be registered, including online media such as forums and blogs. The hour is grave, Socialist leader Martin Schultz said, singling out the media council's membership of government appointees as unacceptable.Others joined in. The aim of media governance is not to guarantee proper and adequate information, said Liberal leader Guy Verhofstadt. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU's police mission in Kosovo, Eulex, has begun laying the groundwork for an investigation into claims that Kosovar Prime Minister Hashim Thaci is responsible for murdering Serb prisoners and selling their kidneys in the 1990s.Eulex chief prosecutor Isabelle Arnal and Kosovar deputy prosecutor Sevdije Morina met with Albanian counterparts in Tirana on Tuesday (18 January) to seek assurances that Albanian authorities would co-operate in the probe.It's the first meeting of this type and it's too early say [if Tirana will help out], a Eulex spokeswoman told EUobserver on Wednesday morning.She added that Eulex some three weeks ago sent a letter requesting hard evidence from Dick Marty, a Swiss politician who put forward the Thaci accusations in a report for the Council of Europe in December. We know he has received the letter but we don't know what he's going to provide, the spokeswoman said. Mr Marty on Tuesday broke his media silence in two conciliatory interviews with Albanian-language news agencies.Speaking to the Swiss-based internet agency albinfo.ch, he said: I know that seeking the truth can be painful, but it was never my intention to criticise or criminalise a community. Dear Mr. Stengel,I wanted to bring to your attention a recent article in Time entitled Israel's Rightward Lurch Scares Some Conservatives. I hope that you will agree that the article's obvious bias and numerous distortions are not worthy of the standards of your prestigious magazine.Israelis depicted in the article as essentially sliding towards fascism. Your correspondent refers to Israel's Shin Bet (the equivalent of the FBI) as a secret police, claims that the Israeli government increasingly equates dissent with disloyalty, and accuses the Prime Minister of taking a page from neighboring authoritarian states.
The evidence offered for these outrageous allegations includes a preliminary vote in our parliament that would require naturalized citizens to make a pledge of allegiance, a proposal to strip citizenship from Israelis convicted of espionage and terrorism, a motion to investigate foreign government funding of local NGOs, calls on Jews to not rent property to Arabs, and demonstrations demanding prohibitions of Arab boys from dating Jewish girls.But your correspondent did not find it necessary to inform your readers of a few facts.Oaths of allegiance are commonplace in most democratic countries, including the United States. Naturalized citizens in America swear an oath to its Constitution and to defend the country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Israel's proposed pledge would require naturalized citizens to swear an oath to Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, words taken directly from our Declaration of Independence.Moreover, Great Britain, France, Germany, and Italy are just some of the many countries where citizenship can be stripped for various infractions that are defined as undermining national interests. Are these European countries not democratic? In the United States, Senator Joe Leiberman proposed a bill last year to add joining a foreign terrorist organization or engaging in or supporting hostilities against the United States or its allies to the list of acts for which United States nationals would lose their nationality. Is American democracy threatened by such a bill?
As for questioning the legitimacy of foreign government funding of Israeli NGOs, mentioning America's Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) may have presented a more balanced picture.FARA requires that any organization engaged in lobbying in the U.S. that receives money from foreign individuals, let alone foreign governments, must among other things register as a foreign agent with the Department of Justice and permit the Attorney General to inspect all of its activities.It is hard to imagine any democratic country accepting foreign governments intervening in its domestic affairs by funding domestic groups engaged not merely in criticism of a particular government's policy but also attacking the very foundations of the State.What would Britain do if the French government was actively funding a British NGO that sought to eliminate the monarchy? What would the United States do if the Iranian government was funding American NGOs pressing for a withdrawal of US forces from the Middle East? There is a vigorous public debate in Israel, including within the Likud party, over the best means to address the problem of foreign government funding of local NGOs. Proposals range from launching a parliamentary investigation to laws banning or restricting such funding to measures to ensure full transparency. Far from being a sign of Israel's slide toward fascism, the current debate in Israel is a testament to how vibrant our democracy truly is.
Finally, contrary to the implication of your correspondent, Prime Minister Netanyahu has publicly and forcefully condemned the racist sentiments that were mentioned in the article. For example, this is what the Prime Minister said at the opening of Israel's annual Bible Quiz to an audience of mostly observant Jews a few hours after he learned of the letter calling on Jews not to rent apartments to Arabs:There are non-Jews among the citizens of this country. How would we feel if someone said not to sell apartments to Jews? We would have been outraged, and indeed we are outraged when we hear such things in neighboring countries or anywhere else. Such statements should not be made, neither about Jews nor about Arabs. They must not be made in any democratic country, let alone a Jewish-democratic country that respects the moral values of the Jewish heritage and the Bible. Therefore, the State of Israel categorically rejects these things.Contrast this unequivocal condemnation by the leader of Israel to the Palestinian Authority law that mandates the death penalty for any one who sells land to Jews. Such laws are all too common in a Middle East in which Christians are persecuted, gays are hanged in public squares and women are stoned for adultery.In Israel, things are different. Here, we protect the rights of women, gays and minorities, including the 20% of Israelis who are Arabs, who enjoy freedom of speech and religion and the protections afforded by independent courts and the rule of law.Every decision in Israel is put under the microscope by one of world's largest foreign press contingents, the hundreds of human rights organizations and NGOs that operate freely here, a famously adversarial local press and most critically, by a vociferous parliamentary opposition.

It's Proven: Bilin Woman Died of Overdose, not IDF Gas

An IDF investigation has found that Jawaher Abu Rahma, who PA leaders accused Israel of killing, actually died due to a doctor's mistake. The PA had claimed that Abu Rahma died after inhaling tear gas as PA rioters clashed with Israeli soldiers near the Samaria separation/security barrier.The investigation found that Rahma was not at the demonstration, but was in a house nearby. Initial PA reports had implied that she was at the demonstration; however, when pictures of the protest did not show her presence, it was then reported that she had been overcome by tear gas at home.
However, the IDF found that Rahma was not taken to a hospital during or immediately after the protest, but only later in the day.Once in the Ramallah hospital, Rahma was given unusually high doses of Atropine, a drug whose uses include countering nerve gas or speeding up a dangerously slow pulse. The drug apparently caused her death, investigators said.Documents received by the IDF also provided additional evidence for the theory that Rahma had been seriously ill prior to the demonstration, possibly with cancer.IDF commanders planned to meet last week with PA officials to brief them on the ongoing investigation. Rabbis for Human Rights Accused of Inciting Violence

Activists from the Shilo region in Samaria made their way to Jerusalem on Wednesday to protest outside the home of Arik Asherman, a Reform rabbi who heads the group Rabbis for Human Rights. The protesters accused Asherman of inciting violence in Samaria in the name of peace.Asherman and a small group of fellow activists often accompany Palestinian Authority Arabs when they attempt to farm near Jewish areas, or areas off-limits for planting. He plans to accompany PA Arabs in planting olive trees near the Jewish village of Adei Ad in Binyamin.Jews in the region say Asherman encourages PA Arabs to approach Jewish villages, where they often fight with Jewish youth. The leftist activists and the Palestinians came up here to fight with the Jewish residents, one resident said, referring to a fight last week near Shilo in which three Jewish youths and one PA man were injured.
We usually have good relations [between Jews and Arabs], but there are those who try to incite violence in order to make us look bad, he said.Another demonstrator criticized Asherman for planning to plant trees for PA residents on Tu B'Shvat, a Jewish holiday celebrating trees and the land of Israel. Even on a Jewish holiday, he goes to celebrate with the Arabs, he charged.Asherman told Arutz Sheva that we have a problem with the settlements... We need to end the occupation. However, Rabbis for Human Rights avoids politics, he claimed, promoting any peace agreement whether that means one state or two states or ten states, whether it means we evict all the settlers, or that they stay where they are.The theory that leftist peace activists actually encourage violence has been suggested before. During the 2009 olive harvest, civilian security chief for Judea and Samaria Shlomo Vaknin said the presence of pro-PA foreign activists was directly linked to Arab-Jewish clashes.

WND previously reported the Hawaii Department of Health has refused to authenticate the COLB posted on the Internet by Snopes.com and FactCheck.org.WND has reported that in 1961, Obama's grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, could have made an in-person report of a Hawaii birth even if the infant Barack Obama Jr. had been foreign-born.

Left-wingers and human rights organisations have been strident in their criticism of conservatives such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy for his government's close ties and support of the ousted Tunisian leader.But on Tuesday (18 January), after it was revealed that Mr Ali's political party, the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD), was a member of the Socialist International, the global alliance of centre-left parties, the RCD was expelled.Martin Schulz, the leader of the left in the parliament, offered a mea culpa for its embrace of the party: Now and again, we do discover that there are members of our own family and are shocked by this. They were however expelled today from the Socialist International, but it is perfectly true that he was a member.

Likelihood of major flooding on ND river rises

FARGO, N.D. – The likelihood of significant Red River flooding has risen in North Dakota and Minnesota, the National Weather Service said Tuesday in its latest outlook for the river that has overflowed the past two springs and sent officials and residents in the densely populated region scrambling to save homes and businesses.There is about a 20-percent chance the river at Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., will surpass the record crest set in 2009 and about a 50-percent chance it will beat last year's crest, which was the sixth-highest on record, the weather service said.Meteorologist Greg Gust said Tuesday that precipitation levels in the Red River Valley are tracking between the high mark set at this time in 1997, when floods wiped out Grand Forks, about 70 miles north of Fargo, and 2009, when the river eventually crested at nearly 41 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet.I don't know about any of you, but that starts to make a weather guy nervous, Gust said told a gathering of reporters and government officials.The probability is measured by three major factors, which Gust referred to as a three-legged stool: precipitation and moisture content in the soil, water in the snowpack and the expected spring thaw cycle.
Gust called the precipitation factor very high, the liquid in the snowpack likely very high and the spring outlook likely cool, stormy, wet.The first two legs of the stool have been knocked out from under us. That third leg is awfully wobbly. I don't feel good about it all. I would not want to sit on that stool, Gust said.Deputy Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney said he was not surprised by the new figures.Everybody knows we've had 19 days of snow in a row. We've been shoveling every night, he said.City officials will be meeting prior to Monday's City Commission meeting to discuss which areas need the most flood protection, Mahoney said. Fargo and Moorhead already have built up areas and bought out homes near the river over the past decade to keep most of the area protected to at least 40 feet.The message is, we will prepare for what we have to prepare for, but we will probably start earlier preparations, he said. We're going to need some help earlier probably than later in this particular area.In 2009, the river was above flood stage for a record 61 days. It crested twice — first at 40.84 feet on March 28, followed by a crest of 34 feet more than two weeks later. About 100 homes in the area were damaged, and thousands of people were evacuated.
The Fargo area has received nearly 56 inches of snow — nearly 16 inches above its average for an entire winter season, the weather service said. That comes on top of summer and fall rainfall that was 50 percent above normal.The current flood factors are similar to those that weren't recorded until March last year, Gust said.Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney described latest flooding predictions as concerning and spooky.We've always been able to win, we've always been able to fight it, Laney said. Cars passing by intersections threw up gobs of slush onto anyone standing too close to the street.The National Weather Service issued a winter storm advisory until 1 p.m. in New York City. The area got 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet by early morning. It was to be followed by an inch of ice before turning to all rain by late morning.

ISLAMABAD – A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked a remote area of southwestern Pakistan early Wednesday, shaking many parts of the country and causing tremors as far away as India and the United Arab Emirates.The quake was centered in Baluchistan province, the country's most sparsely populated area, said the United States Geological Service, occurring at 1:30 a.m. local time at a depth of some 50 miles (84kilometers.Its epicenter was in a remote area some 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of the Baluchistan capital of Quetta, said chief Pakistani meteorologist Arif Mahmood, not far from the Afghan border.The closest town to the epicenter was Dalbandin, with a population around 15,000 people, and is so remote that the nearby Chagai hills were the site of Pakistan's 1998 nuclear tests.There was no word on damage in Dalbandin. But another town close to the epicenter, Karan, suffered no major damage, said Fateh Bangar, Karan's deputy commissioner. The town was some 45 miles (70 kilometers) from the epicenter, he said.Nasir Baluch, a police officer in Karan, said several mud houses collapsed or were damaged in an area outside the town called Mashkil. There was no immediate word on casualties, but the area is sparsely populated, he said.
There was no major damage in Quetta either, but the quake caused widespread panic in the city, said residents.Local TV reports said the quake was felt throughout several other provinces as well. Many residents in the country's largest city, Karachi, ran out into the streets once the quake started, said the reports.Karachi resident Mohammad Zubair said he was watching a cricket match on TV when his bed began to shake.I jumped out of bed realizing it was an earthquake, said the 28-year-old. ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.2 shook southwestern Pakistan early on Wednesday, jolting residents of cities as far apart as Delhi and Dubai, but the epicenter was far from major population centers.The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was more than 80 km (50 miles) underground, close to the town of Dalbandin in Baluchistan province, near the Afghan and Iranian frontiers.Poor communications ensured there were few immediate reports from the vicinity of the quake, but despite the major strength of the shock, the great depth may have limited damage. The USGS had first said that the earthquake was very much shallower.The USGS said the epicenter was 55 km (34 miles) west of Dalbandin, a town of about 15,000 people, and at a depth of 83 km (52 miles).In Dalbandin, several people were injured when the roofs of their houses collapsed, provincial Transport Minister Amanullah Notizai told Reuters, but so far there were no reports of fatalities in the quake which hit at 1:23 a.m. (2023 GMT on Tuesday).
People in India's border province of Rajasthan said cracks appeared in the walls of rural dwellings.U.S. forces across the border in Afghanistan were unaffected by the quake, according to preliminary reports from the U.S. military.As dawn breaks and officials reach the affected area, more damage and fatalities may be revealed in an area where traditional simple structures may have fared badly under the strains of the powerful tremor.

An official at Edhi Foundation, the biggest private ambulance and rescue service in Karachi, said there were no reports of any damage.I was sleeping when the quake struck and I felt like my bed was shaking. I got up and ran to check the children...and thankfully they were all okay, said Masooma Rizvi, a housewife. It was very scary. I have never felt anything like this before.The Pacific Tsunami Center said the onshore quake had not triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.A major quake of this magnitude, if at a shallow depth and close to population centers, is capable of causing widespread and heavy damage. Foot-and-Mouth in South Korea: 1 Million Farm Animals Slaughtered-TIME

Shin Chang-seon seems to know everyone in Gapyeong, a small town about 45 miles (70 km) northeast of Seoul. The 58-year-old president of the local beef association was once the village chief here; he now has a cattle farm with just over 100 cows. As he walks around town, residents approach him on the street to shake his hand and talk about local issues. But in farming-heavy Gapyeong (pop. 20,071), the conversation has shifted from countryside small talk to concern and shock over foot-and-mouth disease, a deadly virus to all cloven-footed animals. Since South Korea's recent outbreak took hold in late November, foot-and-mouth has been confirmed on 118 farms across the country and has led to the slaughter of close to 1.7 million farm animals. (See pictures of an oil spill in South Korea.)Now, Shin, whose own cows have not been infected, makes regular phone calls to console farmers in the area who have had their cows slaughtered by government teams sent out around the nation to try to stop the spread of the disease. Unable to do anything, farmers watch their animals and livelihood die before their eyes. It's unbelievable to see what's happening, Shin says. We have built these farms, in my case, for over 30 years. And that could all be shattered overnight.
Things could get worse. As of Jan. 11, cloven-footed animals on 3,500 farms within a certain distance of the confirmed cases have been slaughtered, according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and the disease is still spreading. The methods have been rough on farmers and distant viewers alike: in the hurry to contain the disease, more than 1 million pigs have been culled, many buried alive because euthanasia drugs have run out. The activity has earned the Korean government ire from animal-rights groups like PETA, which stated on its website that people should urge South Korean authorities to stop this massacre immediately. An official at the Agriculture Ministry told the daily Kyunghyang Sinmun that the government has temporarily run out of euthanasia drugs but is trying to find other humane ways to cull them. Meanwhile, the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, an arm of the Agriculture Ministry, has been vaccinating cows and pigs all across South Korea in a bid to rid the country of the virus. Lee Byoung-guan, an official at the quarantine service, says the government has vaccinated roughly 1,450,000 pigs, cows, deer, goats and sheep and will continue to do so until every farm animal in the country is vaccinated - though the ministry says it will first focus its vaccination efforts on areas hit hardest by foot-and-mouth. We work day and night, Lee says. If there's a report [of foot-and-mouth], we go right away and confirm the case.According to the Agriculture Ministry, the mass cull has caused wholesale prices of beef and pork to rise in January: 9% and 22% over December's average prices, respectively. Imports have also risen, to make up for losses in domestic supply. South Korea is a net importer of beef, chicken and pork, getting most of its pork from the United States and most of its beef from Australia. There have also been reports that the disease has spread to North Korea, where, according to Yonhap News Agency, the North's military has been trying to stop the spread of the disease by disinfecting farms around the country. The JoongAng Ilbo, citing an intelligence official, said the disease could take a toll on the country's food supply. (See pictures of the two Koreas' exchange of fire in November.)
In South Korea, there is concern that the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday - when meat sales traditionally spike as families travel to visit relatives for big meals - could contribute to a strain on supply and even the spreading of the virus. Lee says the virus, though it does not affect humans, can easily be spread by people traveling to and from locations where foot-and-mouth has been confirmed. Fear of spreading the disease is the reason several cultural events, including a popular winter festival in Gapyeong, have been canceled. The local economy benefited a lot from the festival, says Victor Kye, director of Jarasum Jazz Center, the organizer of the festival. But this is a life-and-death matter for the stock farmers. In the long run, canceling the festival was the right move. But the Lunar New Year, when millions of South Koreans travel around the nation, can't be canceled. We ask people to not go into stock farms if possible,says Lee.And if they have been, they should stay away from other farms.That's hard for lifelong farmers like Shin, who made it his mission as president of his local beef association to take care of his colleagues. This week, 34 well-regarded Mauritanian religious and national leaders signed a fatwa, or Islamic law, banning female genital mutilation (FGM). The fatwa is considered a huge stride toward women's rights in the Islam world. Female genital mutilation, or genital cutting, is a form of female circumcision. It entails removing all or part of the external female genitalia, including the clitoris and labia.It is often practiced on girls between the time they're born and their early teen years. After the circumcision is complete, many experience severe bleeding, difficulty urinating, childbirth complications and, in some cases, death. According to the World Health Organization, the procedure has no medical benefits.Female circumcision is not a religion practice. Russia's Medvedev backs independent Palestine

JERICHO, West Bank (Reuters) – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev endorsed a Palestinian state on Tuesday, saying Moscow had recognized independence in 1988 and was not changing the position adopted by the former Soviet Union.Making his first visit to the Israeli-occupied West Bank as Russian head of state, Medvedev stopped short of issuing a ringing declaration of recognition of Palestinian statehood by the modern Russian Federation which he represents.Russia's position remains unchanged. Quartet foreign ministers were due to meet next month in Munich to discuss ways to revive the Middle East peace process, which has been a foreign policy priority for U.S. President Barack Obama but has ground to a halt due to a dispute over Israel's West Bank settlements policy.

QASR EL-YAHUD, West Bank – Just months before the official opening of one of Christianity's holiest sites to visitors, the area where John the Baptist is said to have baptized Jesus remains surrounded by thousands of land mines.Israel says the sites visited by pilgrims and tourists in an area known as Qasr el-Yahud will be safe, but advocacy groups warn that crowds could be in danger.On Tuesday, some 15,000 Christian pilgrims marched between two fenced-in mine fields to reach the Epiphany ceremony led by the Greek Orthodox patriarch on the Jordan River, 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of the oasis town of Jericho at the edge of the West Bank.
Worshippers from around the world dipped themselves in the muddy waters, facing fellow believers on the other side of the small river. Orthodox clergymen dressed in dark frocks and robes chanted prayers as Patriarch Theofilos III blessed the waters, hurled branches and released white doves into the air.This site is Christianity's third holiest — after the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, on the spot where Christian belief says Jesus was crucified and resurrected, and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where tradition holds Jesus was born — and the baptism marks the beginning of Jesus' public ministry.Since Israel took control of the area in the 1967 Mideast war, pilgrims have had to coordinate their visits with the Israeli military, because of security concerns and leftover land mines.The ancient churches and monasteries on the Israeli side, some dating back to the fourth century, are surrounded by signs reading Danger! EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Socialists and conservatives in the European Parliament have accused each other of cosying up to Tunisian ex-dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, with senior figures in the French political establishment also tainted by association. Left-wingers and human rights organisations have been strident in their criticism of conservatives such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy for his government's close ties and support of the ousted Tunisian leader.But on Tuesday (18 January), after it was revealed that Mr Ali's political party, the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD), was a member of the Socialist International, the global alliance of centre-left parties, the RCD was expelled.Martin Schulz, the leader of the left in the parliament, offered a mea culpa for its embrace of the party: Now and again, we do discover that there are members of our own family and are shocked by this. They were however expelled today from the Socialist International, but it is perfectly true that he was a member.
He said that the uprising in Tunisia had been the product of dramatic inequality, with very rich elites and very poor masses and that the EU will have to work closely with other partners this side of the Mediterranean to ensure that democratic legislation can be put into place and social justice can be finalised.He added that he hoped the instability was not going to spread from Tunisia.Mr Schulz then used the opportunity to accuse his opposite numbers in the chamber, the centre-right European People's Party of cosying up to the ex-dictator.Recently there was signed a co-operation agreement with the EPP [and the RCD]. It is a really interesting party because they were a member of the Socialist International and the EPP too.Well, this is really interesting - I think this explains for me why the EPP hasn't attacked [Ben Ali's government and his allies] yet. They're willing to take anyone and everyone. Likelihood of major flooding on ND river rises

FARGO, N.D. – The likelihood of significant Red River flooding has risen in North Dakota and Minnesota, the National Weather Service said Tuesday in its latest outlook for the river that has overflowed the past two springs and sent officials and residents in the densely populated region scrambling to save homes and businesses.There is about a 20-percent chance the river at Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., will surpass the record crest set in 2009 and about a 50-percent chance it will beat last year's crest, which was the sixth-highest on record, the weather service said.Meteorologist Greg Gust said Tuesday that precipitation levels in the Red River Valley are tracking between the high mark set at this time in 1997, when floods wiped out Grand Forks, about 70 miles north of Fargo, and 2009, when the river eventually crested at nearly 41 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet.I don't know about any of you, but that starts to make a weather guy nervous, Gust said told a gathering of reporters and government officials.The probability is measured by three major factors, which Gust referred to as a three-legged stool: precipitation and moisture content in the soil, water in the snowpack and the expected spring thaw cycle.
Gust called the precipitation factor very high, the liquid in the snowpack likely very high and the spring outlook likely cool, stormy, wet.The first two legs of the stool have been knocked out from under us. That third leg is awfully wobbly. I don't feel good about it all. I would not want to sit on that stool, Gust said.Deputy Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney said he was not surprised by the new figures.Everybody knows we've had 19 days of snow in a row. We've been shoveling every night, he said.City officials will be meeting prior to Monday's City Commission meeting to discuss which areas need the most flood protection, Mahoney said. Fargo and Moorhead already have built up areas and bought out homes near the river over the past decade to keep most of the area protected to at least 40 feet.The message is, we will prepare for what we have to prepare for, but we will probably start earlier preparations, he said. We're going to need some help earlier probably than later in this particular area.In 2009, the river was above flood stage for a record 61 days. It crested twice — first at 40.84 feet on March 28, followed by a crest of 34 feet more than two weeks later. About 100 homes in the area were damaged, and thousands of people were evacuated.
The Fargo area has received nearly 56 inches of snow — nearly 16 inches above its average for an entire winter season, the weather service said. That comes on top of summer and fall rainfall that was 50 percent above normal.The current flood factors are similar to those that weren't recorded until March last year, Gust said.Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney described latest flooding predictions as concerning and spooky.We've always been able to win, we've always been able to fight it, Laney said. NEW YORK – A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain iced over roads, driveways and sidewalks from Delaware up into New England on Tuesday, making for a slippery and messy morning commute.Patricia Ricciardi, 49, used a tissue to wipe sludge off the cuffs of her slacks in a south Philadelphia subway station as she headed downtown to work at her city job.I don't want to go to work looking like I came from a garage instead, she said.It's disgusting.New York City streets and sidewalks were a slushy mess Tuesday morning, with pedestrians forced to cross large watery accumulations at street corners, and icy stretches of sidewalks were like Slip n' Slides. Cars passing by intersections threw up gobs of slush onto anyone standing too close to the street.The National Weather Service issued a winter storm advisory until 1 p.m. in New York City. The area got 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet by early morning. It was to be followed by an inch of ice before turning to all rain by late morning.

ISLAMABAD – A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked a remote area of southwestern Pakistan early Wednesday, shaking many parts of the country and causing tremors as far away as India and the United Arab Emirates.The quake was centered in Baluchistan province, the country's most sparsely populated area, said the United States Geological Service, occurring at 1:30 a.m. local time at a depth of some 50 miles (84kilometers.Its epicenter was in a remote area some 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of the Baluchistan capital of Quetta, said chief Pakistani meteorologist Arif Mahmood, not far from the Afghan border.The closest town to the epicenter was Dalbandin, with a population around 15,000 people, and is so remote that the nearby Chagai hills were the site of Pakistan's 1998 nuclear tests.There was no word on damage in Dalbandin. But another town close to the epicenter, Karan, suffered no major damage, said Fateh Bangar, Karan's deputy commissioner. The town was some 45 miles (70 kilometers) from the epicenter, he said.Nasir Baluch, a police officer in Karan, said several mud houses collapsed or were damaged in an area outside the town called Mashkil. There was no immediate word on casualties, but the area is sparsely populated, he said.
There was no major damage in Quetta either, but the quake caused widespread panic in the city, said residents.Local TV reports said the quake was felt throughout several other provinces as well. ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.2 shook southwestern Pakistan early on Wednesday, jolting residents of cities as far apart as Delhi and Dubai, but the epicenter was far from major population centers.The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was more than 80 km (50 miles) underground, close to the town of Dalbandin in Baluchistan province, near the Afghan and Iranian frontiers.Poor communications ensured there were few immediate reports from the vicinity of the quake, but despite the major strength of the shock, the great depth may have limited damage. The USGS had first said that the earthquake was very much shallower.The USGS said the epicenter was 55 km (34 miles) west of Dalbandin, a town of about 15,000 people, and at a depth of 83 km (52 miles).In Dalbandin, several people were injured when the roofs of their houses collapsed, provincial Transport Minister Amanullah Notizai told Reuters, but so far there were no reports of fatalities in the quake which hit at 1:23 a.m. (2023 GMT on Tuesday).
People in India's border province of Rajasthan said cracks appeared in the walls of rural dwellings.U.S. forces across the border in Afghanistan were unaffected by the quake, according to preliminary reports from the U.S. military.As dawn breaks and officials reach the affected area, more damage and fatalities may be revealed in an area where traditional simple structures may have fared badly under the strains of the powerful tremor.

An official at Edhi Foundation, the biggest private ambulance and rescue service in Karachi, said there were no reports of any damage.I was sleeping when the quake struck and I felt like my bed was shaking. I got up and ran to check the children...and thankfully they were all okay, said Masooma Rizvi, a housewife. It was very scary. I have never felt anything like this before.The Pacific Tsunami Center said the onshore quake had not triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.A major quake of this magnitude, if at a shallow depth and close to population centers, is capable of causing widespread and heavy damage. Foot-and-Mouth in South Korea: 1 Million Farm Animals Slaughtered-TIME

Shin Chang-seon seems to know everyone in Gapyeong, a small town about 45 miles (70 km) northeast of Seoul. The 58-year-old president of the local beef association was once the village chief here; he now has a cattle farm with just over 100 cows. As he walks around town, residents approach him on the street to shake his hand and talk about local issues. But in farming-heavy Gapyeong (pop. 20,071), the conversation has shifted from countryside small talk to concern and shock over foot-and-mouth disease, a deadly virus to all cloven-footed animals. Since South Korea's recent outbreak took hold in late November, foot-and-mouth has been confirmed on 118 farms across the country and has led to the slaughter of close to 1.7 million farm animals. (See pictures of an oil spill in South Korea.)Now, Shin, whose own cows have not been infected, makes regular phone calls to console farmers in the area who have had their cows slaughtered by government teams sent out around the nation to try to stop the spread of the disease. Unable to do anything, farmers watch their animals and livelihood die before their eyes. It's unbelievable to see what's happening, Shin says. We have built these farms, in my case, for over 30 years. And that could all be shattered overnight.
Things could get worse. As of Jan. 11, cloven-footed animals on 3,500 farms within a certain distance of the confirmed cases have been slaughtered, according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and the disease is still spreading. The methods have been rough on farmers and distant viewers alike: in the hurry to contain the disease, more than 1 million pigs have been culled, many buried alive because euthanasia drugs have run out. The activity has earned the Korean government ire from animal-rights groups like PETA, which stated on its website that people should urge South Korean authorities to stop this massacre immediately. An official at the Agriculture Ministry told the daily Kyunghyang Sinmun that the government has temporarily run out of euthanasia drugs but is trying to find other humane ways to cull them. Meanwhile, the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, an arm of the Agriculture Ministry, has been vaccinating cows and pigs all across South Korea in a bid to rid the country of the virus. Lee Byoung-guan, an official at the quarantine service, says the government has vaccinated roughly 1,450,000 pigs, cows, deer, goats and sheep and will continue to do so until every farm animal in the country is vaccinated - though the ministry says it will first focus its vaccination efforts on areas hit hardest by foot-and-mouth. We work day and night, Lee says. If there's a report [of foot-and-mouth], we go right away and confirm the case.According to the Agriculture Ministry, the mass cull has caused wholesale prices of beef and pork to rise in January: 9% and 22% over December's average prices, respectively. Imports have also risen, to make up for losses in domestic supply. South Korea is a net importer of beef, chicken and pork, getting most of its pork from the United States and most of its beef from Australia. There have also been reports that the disease has spread to North Korea, where, according to Yonhap News Agency, the North's military has been trying to stop the spread of the disease by disinfecting farms around the country. The JoongAng Ilbo, citing an intelligence official, said the disease could take a toll on the country's food supply. (See pictures of the two Koreas' exchange of fire in November.)
In South Korea, there is concern that the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday - when meat sales traditionally spike as families travel to visit relatives for big meals - could contribute to a strain on supply and even the spreading of the virus. Lee says the virus, though it does not affect humans, can easily be spread by people traveling to and from locations where foot-and-mouth has been confirmed. Fear of spreading the disease is the reason several cultural events, including a popular winter festival in Gapyeong, have been canceled. The local economy benefited a lot from the festival, says Victor Kye, director of Jarasum Jazz Center, the organizer of the festival. But this is a life-and-death matter for the stock farmers. In the long run, canceling the festival was the right move. But the Lunar New Year, when millions of South Koreans travel around the nation, can't be canceled. We ask people to not go into stock farms if possible,says Lee.And if they have been, they should stay away from other farms.That's hard for lifelong farmers like Shin, who made it his mission as president of his local beef association to take care of his colleagues. Female Genital Mutilation Banned by Islamic Leaders in Mauritania

This week, 34 well-regarded Mauritanian religious and national leaders signed a fatwa, or Islamic law, banning female genital mutilation (FGM). The fatwa is considered a huge stride toward women's rights in the Islam world. Female genital mutilation, or genital cutting, is a form of female circumcision. It entails removing all or part of the external female genitalia, including the clitoris and labia.It is often practiced on girls between the time they're born and their early teen years. After the circumcision is complete, many experience severe bleeding, difficulty urinating, childbirth complications and, in some cases, death. According to the World Health Organization, the procedure has no medical benefits.Female circumcision is not a religion practice. However, it has become a law by custom, says Jacqueline Castledine in an article posted on the Mount Holyoke College website.She states, The practice has become important to Islam because it is associated with female sexual purity. FGM is intended by its practitioners to both control women's sexual drives and also to cleanse women's genitalia by removing the clitoris, which is seen as masculine, a female penis.The law was passed on Jan. 15, 2011, by 34 Mauritanian religious and national figures. It prohibits the practice of FGM within the country.According to Magharebia.com, The authors cited the work of Islamic legal expert Ibn al-Hajj as support for their assertion that [s]uch practices were not present in the Maghreb countries over the past centuries.
This new law will certainly curb the practice of female genital mutilation in Mauratania.It removes the religious mask such practices were hiding behind, says Dr. Sheikh Ould Zein Ould Imam, professor of jurisprudence at the University of Nouakchott in a Magharebia.com article. We do need, however, a media campaign to highlight the fatwa, explain it and expound upon its religious and social significance.Many men and women -- both Islamic and not -- declared this a victory for female rights, saying the fatwa was long overdue.Where were those imams for the past decades, when [FGM] killed dozens of girls each year? Were the imams and circumcision victims on two different planets? Personally speaking, I find no answer to those questions. All I am trying to say is that we needed that circumcision-prohibiting fatwa a long time ago. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Turkish leader Recep Tayip Erodgan has lambasted the EU as a spent force on the international stage in an angry statement aimed at unlocking accession talks.Writing in an op-ed in the US magazine Newsweek on Monday (17 January) the Muslim leader said: European labour markets and social-security systems are comatose. European economies are stagnant. European societies are near geriatric. Can Europe retain power and credibility in the new world order without addressing these issues? He put forward Turkish enlargement as an antidote to the EU's problems. Turkey has been putting its imprint on the global stage with its impressive economic development and political stability. The Turkish economy is Europe's fastest-growing sizeable economy and will continue to be so in 2011, he said.Turkey is bursting with the vigour that the EU so badly needs.
The Newsweek piece noted Turkey's ascendancy as a soft power in the western Balkans, the Middle East and the Caucasus - the EU's most conflict-prone neighbourhood regions. But Mr Erdogan rebuffed EU, Israeli and US concerns that his Islamist AKP party has a dark agenda to form a new league with fellow Muslim authorities in Iran and Syria in what one member of the Israeli parliament recently described to EUobserver as an axis of evil.This is not a romantic neo-Ottomanism: It is realpolitik based on a new vision of the global order, the Turkish leader said.
Commenting on the state of play in EU accession talks, which ground to a halt under the Belgian EU presidency last year in part due to Cypriot opposition to Turkey's occupation of the island's north, he said: This is turning into the sort of byzantine political intrigue that no candidate country has experienced previously.
Turkey-EU relations are fast approaching a turning point, he added.We are no more a country that would wait at the EU's door like a docile supplicant.Ankara believes that the Cypriot problem is being exploited for strategic reasons by anti-Turkish-accession governments in Germany and France.But two US cables published by WikiLeaks on Monday give an insight into EU fears at the popular level of what Turkish enlargement could mean. A cable from the US embassy in the Hague dated September 2004, in the run-up to the formal launch of EU-Turkey accession negotiations in 2005, voiced worries by mainstream Dutch parties that anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders will easily arouse difficult-to-manage populist sentiments based on deeply held fears and prejudices.The mainstream Dutch parties themselves expressed central worries, such as how the EU will share structural, agricultural and solidarity benefits with Turkey, assuming these programs will look the same then as they do now.The second cable, from October 2004, noted that Mr Wilders continues to attract followers from those worried about inflows of Turkish workers.

Russia's Medvedev backs independent Palestine

JERICHO, West Bank (Reuters) – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev endorsed a Palestinian state on Tuesday, saying Moscow had recognized independence in 1988 and was not changing the position adopted by the former Soviet Union.Making his first visit to the Israeli-occupied West Bank as Russian head of state, Medvedev stopped short of issuing a ringing declaration of recognition of Palestinian statehood by the modern Russian Federation which he represents.Russia's position remains unchanged. Russia made its choice a long time ago ... we supported and will support the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to an independent state with its capital in East Jerusalem, Medvedev said.Israel has been alarmed in the past two months by a string of recognitions by Latin American states including Brazil and Argentina, which some analysts say could be a precursor to a move by the Palestinians to seek full United Nations membership if efforts to revive moribund peace negotiations fall through.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has confirmed that is one of his options. At a news conference with Medvedev in Jericho he thanked Russia for being one of the first states in the world to recognize the state of Palestine in 1988.Communist Moscow recognized a Palestinian state declared by the late Yasser Arafat, in a move that won broad support in the Soviet bloc and developing world but had little real impact on diplomatic and political realities.
The Palestinians today say 109 states out of 192 United Nations member countries recognize their statehood. Israel has warned that a unilateral declaration of statehood would set back the peace process.A senior Israeli intelligence official told a Knesset committee on Tuesday he expected more recognitions by the time of the U.N. General Assembly in September.

Medvedev drove into the Israeli-occupied West Bank in a road convoy from Amman airport in Jordan, crossing over the historic Allenby Bridge in an unusual route for a head of state that was dictated by an Israeli foreign ministry strike, which had forced him to cancel the Israel leg of his trip.Palestinian security men were out in force and curious crowds lined the streets of Jericho to watch the convoy enter the Biblical town north of the Dead Sea, at the lowest point on earth, which has been inhabited for over 10,000 years.Officials said they could not remember when a visitor of that level had used the Allenby crossing, which was shut down to normal traffic for the occasion. The crossing is controlled by Israeli immigration and security.Medvedev drew applause from Palestinians when he noted that this is the first visit of a Russian president to Palestine not united with a visit to another country -- a clear reference to Israel which would normally have been his first stop.
Russia is a partner of the United States, European Union and United Nations in the Quartet of international powers overseeing Middle East peace negotiations.A number of former Soviet bloc east European states that are now in the EU also recognized Palestine in 1988. But the United States and west European governments do not.
Quartet foreign ministers were due to meet next month in Munich to discuss ways to revive the Middle East peace process, which has been a foreign policy priority for U.S. President Barack Obama but has ground to a halt due to a dispute over Israel's West Bank settlements policy.
Medvedev said this was the main topic of his talks.We discussed the possible prospectives of resuming the dialogue. In order to do that, we need to express maximum moderation. This in the first place relates to the freezing of settlement activity of Israel on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem, he said. Israel apologized to the Kremlin for having to cancel Medvedev's first trip when foreign ministry diplomats who would normally prepare it stepped up their strike action last month to win better pay and conditions.The last presidential visitor from Moscow was Medvedev's predecessor Vladimir Putin, now the Russian prime minister, in 2005. Medvedev expressed his understanding for the cancellation, saying it would not harm relations with Israel.He was due to meet Jordan's King Abdullah later on Tuesday.
