IRAN ADOPTS CLINTON(NWO) MIDEAST PHRASE

THE WORLD DICTATOR

REVELATION 6:1-2,13:1-3,7-9,16
1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.(THIS IS THE EU DICTATOR)
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.(7 HEADS ARE THE 7TH WORLD EMPIRE IN HISTORY (THE EU) AS WELL AS THE VATICAN WHICH IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS. 10 HORNS ARE 10 KINGS THAT ARISE FROM THE EU, THEN #11 COMES ON THE SCENE BECOMES THE HEAD OF 3 OUNTRIES AND THEN THE EU DICTATOR, COMES FROM 1 OF THE 3 COUNTRIES THAT RULE FOR THIS TERM. I BELIEVE THE 3 COUNTRIES RULING AT THE TIME ARE SPAIN AND 2 OF THE ORIGINAL 6 THAT STARTED THE EU. FROM 1 OF THESE 3 COUNTRIES COME THE FUTURE EU DICTATOR PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN UNION WHO GUARENTEES ISRAELS SECURITY FOR A LAND FOR PEACE 7 YEAR TREATY.
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.(THE JEWISH EU DICTATOR GETS HIS POWER FROM SATAN,HE COMES FROM THE OCCULT).
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.(THE DICTATOR HAS A FALSE RESURRECTION. JUST LIKE JESUS HAD A LITERAL RESURRECTION THIS DICTATOR GETS MURDERED AT THE 3 1/2 YR MARK OF THR 7 YEAR TREATY AND COMES BACK TO LIFE. THIS IS HOW HE CAN CLAIM TO BE GOD AND GET AWAY WITH IT AND CONTROL THE WHOLE EARTH.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
16 And he causeth all,(WORLD SOCIALISM) both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

We shall have World Government, whether or not we like it. The only question is whether World Government will be achieved by conquest or consent.James Paul Warburg appearing before the Senate on 7th February 1950

Like a famous WWII Belgian General,Paul Henry Spock said in 1957:We need no commission, we have already too many. What we need is a man who is great enough to be able to keep all the people in subjection to himself and to lift us out of the economic bog into which we threaten to sink. Send us such a man. Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.

JACK VAN IMPE ON HIS MAR 2,11 SHOW MENTIONED THAT MAYBE THE TOPPLING OF ALL THESE WORLD DICTATORS AROUND THE WORLD IS BECAUSE PROPHECY IS STARTING TO BE FULFILLED THAT THERE WILL ONLY BE A SINGLE WORLD DICTATOR.NOT MANY DICTATORS AROUND THE WORLD.JACK THINKS AND I AGREE WITH HIM THE WORLD IS BEING SETUP FOR THE SINGLE EUROPEAN UNION WORLD DICTATOR.AND IT FITS RIGHT IN WITH PROPHECY.

DANIEL 7:23-24
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast(THE EU,REVIVED ROME) shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,(7TH WORLD EMPIRE) which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.(TRADE BLOCKS)
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise:(10 NATIONS) and another shall rise after them;(#11 SPAIN) and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.(BE HEAD OF 3 KINGS OR NATIONS).

Commission accused of power-grab under new EU rules
ANDREW WILLIS 01.03.2011 @ 17:18 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Member states and interest groups stand to lose considerable power to the European Commission under new rules surrounding the implementation of EU legislation, experts on the subject say.The rules, which come into force on Tuesday (1 March), are designed to overhaul decision-making in the 300-odd EU committees that vote on the detailed implementation of EU laws - a procedure known as comitology.Through ratification of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, member states handed greater control over hundreds of daily decisions such as food labeling and trade-protection measures to the commission, Daniel Gueguen, a leading public affairs consultant, told EUobserver. The reason why the new system will be worse is its increasing complexity. The commission gets more power to the detriment of member states and lobbyists, said Mr Guéguen, the author of a recent book on the subject.

Asked whether the move amounted to an intentional power-grab by the commission, Mr Guéguen said: There is no doubt. It's not official but in practice yes. They are the only people who have the time to understand the complexity of the issues. The European Parliament may think it is getting more power but in practice it will not.
After nine months of protracted negotiations with the commission and member states, MEPs finally approved a regulation governing the new implementing powers last December, as defined by the Lisbon Treaty. The procedure is widely practised across the globe, with national legislature's frequently delegating much of the day-to-day implementation decisions to a country's executive branch. At the EU level, powers have been handed to the commission in a wide-ranging list of areas, on condition that it consults with committees of national experts before decisions are taken.
Under former EU treaties, a simple majority of member state experts could block a commission proposal on technical issues such as milk quotas or the approval of certain chemical substances. They could also elect to transfer controversial decisions such as those related to GMOs to the level of EU ministers.Under the Lisbon Treaty and last December's regulation however, a harder-to-achieve qualified majority is now needed, while the ability to push politically sensitive decisions up to council of ministers level has also been restricted.

An EU official who is well versed on the subject confirmed that the new comitology rules would work very much in the commission's favour. The commission is in control of the agenda and can push its own interests. It can now adopt its own proposals unless there is a qualified majority of member state experts against it, said the source on condition of anonymity.National governments have recently been scrambling to claw back some of the lost powers, mostly in vain, added the contact. Member states woke up way too late. This is what happens when you negotiate a new treaty at 3am.Supporters of the new rules say they will help to further streamline EU decision-making and hand the European Parliament a greater say. But a number of states including Germany and the UK have recently shown considerable unease about the new mechanism, concerned that their ability to influence important trade decisions will be reduced. The commission argues that bringing trade under the new comitology rules will reduce the ability of sectoral groups to lobby against the wider public interest, and also prevent member states from politicising particular issues such as tariffs on shoe imports. And contrary to the views of Mr Guéguen, the Belgian EU presidency last December hailed the MEP agreement on a regulation governing comitology as an important step towards simplifying the EU procedure, frequently said to be lacking transparency.

DOCTOR DOCTORIAN FROM ANGEL OF GOD
then the angel said, Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

EU calls emergency Libya summit for 11 March
ANDREW RETTMAN 01.03.2011 @ 17:34 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU leaders plan to hold a special summit on the Libya crisis in Brussels on 11 March, the same day that leaders from the 17 euro-using countries will hold a mini-summit on joint economic governance.I will make proposals to the European Council on the strategic lines of the European Union's reaction to developments in Libya and in our southern neighbourhood, EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in a written statement on Tuesday (1 March). The self-styled grey mouse of EU politics called the meeting under pressure from France and the UK, the former colonial Great Powers in north Africa. Italy, Poland and Spain also backed the idea. An EU diplomat said France is keen to impose new sanctions on Gaddafi. The extra measures are to target regime-linked companies to prevent him from hiding money. But they are unlikely to touch Libyan oil exporters.France is also keen to debate military support for humanitarian aid, economic assistance for the wider region and a general reset in EU relations with Maghreb countries. The diplomatic contact noted that new sanctions could be ready by Thursday and that the summit could be brought forward if something atrocious happens in Libya before next week.

A Turkish diplomat remarked: 11 March is still quite some time away in view of the rapidly changing situation in Libya. I hope that the EU will want to consult with us on the subject. Better still would be to invite our prime minister to the summit.
Germany was initially reluctant to hold the Libya meeting, with German diplomats saying as late as Monday afternoon that the French idea is not serious. The clash with the eurozone event is politically awkward for Berlin. The group-of-17 meeting is a German initiative to get weaker euro-members to sign up to a legally-binding German model of fiscal discipline in what could be giant leap forward in the history of EU integration.Berlin has rejected public calls by non-euro countries, primarily Poland, to let them take part.On 11 March Polish prime minister Donald Tusk will come to the EU Council building in Brussels in the morning to talk about Libya. But he will have to go home at lunchtime when the doors slam shut for the euro event.
Poland and Germany declined to comment.

Great Powers unwelcome

For his part Alastair Crooke, a former high-level EU advisor on the Middle East who now runs an NGO in Beirut, said the best thing the EU and US can do is to stay out of events in north Africa. There is a deep mistrust here which goes back to the 1920s when the Great Powers, Britain and France, promised people independence and what they got was neo-colonial occupation, he explained. He noted that EU diplomacy is starting from scratch after the revolutions: They've been too busy talking at the top table with Gaddafi and [former Egyptian leader] Mubarak to have any depth of contacts with the opposition forces on the ground.Mr Crooke added that Iran is staying out of Libya because it understands the situation better than the West.At this stage it [the opposition movement] is not a political structure. It's something much more profound and much more rooted in human response to circumstances ... All revolutions generate a dominant narrative at some stage, core myths and ideas about society that give it some meaning for ordinary people. Here it is too soon even for that. Any outsider should be careful about intervention.

Chinese oil firms more open to change than EU ones
VALENTINA POP 01.03.2011 @ 17:43 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Chinese oil and gas firms may score worse than some of their EU counterparts in terms of opacity and corruption, but experts say they are more willing to change their corporate culture.China's state-owned oil and gas giants such as CNOOC, Petrochina and CNPC are among the worst performers when it comes to disclosing payments made to governments abroad, for instance Libya's Moammar Gaddafi, a ranking published Tuesday (1 March) by Transparency International shows.
But EU companies do not score much better: Britain's BP and BG, France's Total, Germany's Wintershall, Austria's OMV and Shell from the Netherlands all rank below the average of 16 percent disclosure, out of 44 companies surveyed worldwide and representing 60 per cent of global oil and gas production. In Libya, for instance, out of the 12 foreign companies (including Chinese and European ones), only Norway's Statoil Hydro disclosed the taxes and fees paid to the Gaddafi government. But while Chinese companies may still invoke a different cultural tradition of doing business, EU ones have no excuse, says Carl Dolan from Transparency International. Even if there is no political pressure on Chinese companies to change, they will have to, as some of them are listed on the US stock exchange, Mr Dolan said. The US last year has passed a law obliging oil and gas companies listed on its stock exchange to disclose payments to governments in every country they operate in and The Hong Kong stock exchange recently also altered its disclosure requirements. This may lead to greater openness and anti-corruption practices within the Chinese companies, he said.

There is no sign of a similar move at EU level for now, with Brussels and national officials saying that introducing more transparency would put European companies at a competitive disadvantage to Chinese ones. This is a bogus argument. The EU should move the standards upwards rather than downwards, Mr Dolan said. Norway's Statoil - which ranked highest in all three transparency rankings and last year made a profit of €5 billion - is a telling example that such reporting practices do not render the business model inefficient. The more companies reveal about their interaction with local governments, the less room there is for facilitation payments payments (to use industry terminology) or bribes (in Mr Dolan's words) required to oil the state machinery in speeding up a delivery or unblocking customs disputes. The UK government did recently signal it will push for EU legislation similar to the one in the US and Hong Kong.Support from the UK Government is vital as the London Stock Exchange is one of the largest and most important financial markets in the world, where more than a trillion pounds worth of oil, gas and mining shares are listed, Gavin Hayman of fellow pro-transparency NGO Global Witness said.In a briefing paper, Global Witness said EU arguments that local oil and gas companies would lose out to Chinese ones if they were to open up are phony. There are other reasons explaining potential Chinese competitive advantage, the paper argues.Unlike Western oil, gas and mineral companies, Chinese companies have focused on providing economic and social infrastructure (roads, railways, ports, schools and hospitals) in poor, resource-rich countries. As a result, developing countries in particular in Africa have sometimes preferred giving oil concessions to Chinese companies rather than their Western counterparts to have resource wealth directly trickle down and stimulate wider social development.

MUSLIM NATIONS

EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

DANIEL 11:40-43
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south( EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR IN ISRAEL) and the king of the north (RUSSIA AND MUSLIM HORDES OF EZEK 38+39) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.(JORDAN)
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

3 A fire(NUCLEAR BOMB) devoureth before them;(RUSSIA-ARABS) and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army,(RUSSIA,MUSLIMS) and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.(SIBERIAN DESERT)
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(NUCLEAR BOMB)

Poll: Where do PA Arabs See Themselves in the Mideast Turmoil?
by Maayana Miskin MAR 1,11

Palestinian Authority Arabs are pessimistic regarding their situation, and most would support a non-violent way to reunite Fatah and Hamas and form a state. However, when asked if they expect a youth revolution in the West Bank similar to those that occurred in Tunisia and Egypt, only 22.8% said yes,31.3% said no, with the rest undecided, and 27.2% explained that they felt that Palestinian conditions are different from those in the Arab countries.Researchers questioned 1,360 PA adults, 860 of them from Judea and Samaria and the remaining 500 from Gaza. The poll was conducted on February 24-26.The majority of respondents were pessimistic regarding the future, with 54.1% expressing concern regarding the state of the PA economy and 61.8% saying they fear for their lives, their family and their property under the PA..Of those surveyed, 80.1% said they support the protest movement in the Arab world that has seen leaders toppled in Tunisia and Egypt, and regimes threatened in Libya and Bahrain.

Still, despite uncertainty about their future and support for Mideast protests,, they do not embrace the idea of turning their own lives upside down. Close to 75% said they would support a non-violent popular movement among Arabs in Judea, Samaria and Gaza aimed at getting their government to bring an end to the Fatah-Hamas schism, a move that would unite actively anti-Israel and terrorist Hamas with Fatah.
On the other hand, more than 76% said they would support a popular uprising aimed at forcing Israelis to leave Judea and Samaria, but in this case non-violence was not mentioned. The question of non-violence is irrelevant, since attempted violence against Jews is ongoing.Peace was also a non-issue. Only 19.6% expressed support for peace talks, while 77.6% said the PA should continue to refuse to speak to Israel unless Israel forbids Jews to build homes east of the 1949 armistice line.Even the 19.6% who remained in favor of talks were not all optimistic: just 18% said they believe an end to the Israel-PA conflict is possible at this time.Despite the strong support for unifying Hamas and Fatah, 56.5% said they prefer PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, the current second in command to Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, running their lives, to Hamas' Gaza head, Ismael Haniyeh. Just 19.2% said Haniyeh would be preferable to Fayyad.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

UN Suspends Libya from Human Rights Council
by Elad Benari MAR 2,11

The UN General Assembly suspended Libya from the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday over leader Muammar Qaddafi's brutal crackdown on the protests in his country. The 192-member assembly passed a suspension resolution by consensus and without a vote. Nobody spoke up for Qaddafi during the debate, though Venezuela did call upon all countries to put a stop to the invasion plans against Libya, which Venezuelan Ambassador Jorge Valero claimed the United States was leading. The resolution says that the General Assembly decides to suspend the rights of membership in the Human Rights Council of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. It goes on to express deep concern about the human rights situation in Libya. The resolution also welcomes last week’s statement by the Arab League which suspended Libya from its session due to Qaddafi’s behavior. It also welcomes the communiqué issued by the Peace and Security Council of the African Union which had decided to dispatch an urgent fact-finding mission to Libya. It comes after British Prime Minister David Cameron warned Qaddafi that his country is weighing military action to prevent the continued slaughter of anti-regime protesters. Cameron said that Britain may create a no-fly zone over Libya and send weapons to protesters, and may even send troops to Libya as a peacekeeping force.

U.S. officials made a similar announcement on Monday, saying that all options are open, including the creation of a no-fly zone. The U.S. military is moving naval and air forces closer to Libya, making it easier for President Barack Obama to order intervention. The UN Security Council condemned last week the violence used against the protesters in Libya. All 15 members of the Security Council expressed grave concern at the situation in Libya and condemned the violence and use of force against civilians. The council called for an immediate end to the violence and for steps to be taken in order to address the legitimate demands of the Libyan people. They also called on the Libyan government to meet its responsibility to protect its population, to act with restraint, and to respect human rights and international humanitarian law.Qaddafi, meanwhile, has repeatedly refused to step down and has said that he will die in Libya as a martyr.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Iran Adopts Bill Clinton's New Middle East Phrase
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu MAR 1,11

When Bill Clinton was president, he envisioned a New Middle East based on the failed Oslo Accords, which blew up in 2000 with the Second Intifada, also known as the Oslo War. Iran now says a new Middle East indeed is on the way, but one with the Islamic Republic as its axis.Iran's pivotal role in the new Middle East is undeniable, Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Politburo Chief General Yadollah Javani said on Monday, addressing a conference in the Western Iranian city of Kermanshah and quoted by the semi-official Fars News Agency.Today the Islamic Revolution of the Iranian nation enjoys such a power, honor and respect in the world that all nations and governments wish to have such a ruling system, he added.Javani said that recent Arab uprisings in Muslim countries herald the spread of Iran’s Islamic Revolution. His comments came one day before massive Iranian forces battled protesters in an effort to squash opposition rallies. In Madrid, visiting President Shimon Peres accused Iran not only of fostering terror in the Middle East but also of duplicating its efforts in Latin America.

He told the Spanish parliament, Iran nourishes Hizbullah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza with terrorism and weapons, and it is creating visible and hidden terrorist cells in other countries, in the Middle East and even Latin America.President Peres also said he was delighted at the changes in the Arab world as a result of recent uprisings, predicting that they will bring about more democracy. Last week, he told Spanish officials that he expects Iranians to topple the regime in Tehran. However, the regime of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has brutally squelched the protest movement, which began two years ago after his disputed re-election. The tight alliance between military forces, Ahmadinejad and supreme Muslim clerics has given them the upper hand against the opposition.Having so far survived international sanctions, Iran continues to deepen its ties with Syria with the aim of extending its influence in the entire Muslim world. It recently sent two warships through the Suez Canal for the first time since the 1979 revolution against the American-backed Shah. The presence of the Iranian vessels in Syria is an indication of the Islamic Republic of Iran's strength and the enemies' failure, Syrian Defense Minister Lt. General Ali Habib said in a meeting with visiting Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, according to Fars. The ships are currently docked in Syria for training, and one of them is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, the news agency added.Iran and Syria have signed an agreement enabling the two countries' naval forces to boost their mutual cooperation.Definitely, the good ties between the two friendly and brotherly countries of Iran and Syria and their use of each other's experiences would strengthen the two states, specially in naval fields, stated Sayyari.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Iran Seeks Mass Destruction Weapons Parts from Norway
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu MAR 1,11

Norway has foiled Iranian attempts to buy technology for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that might be used to deliver a nuclear missile, Norway’s security chief has revealed.Janne Kristiansen, general director of the Norwegian Police Security Service, told Reuters that Iran tried to circumvent the state-owned Kongsberg Defense firm by contacting smaller companies that sell dual-purpose components and technology which can be used for building or delivering nuclear missiles, as well as for civilian uses. She declined to name the companies or state the specific products Iran has been seeking but stated that Iran did not succeed in obtaining sensitive technology despite pushy behavior by Iranians who initially inquired about harmless products.Iran has consistently denied charges by Israel and Western leaders that it is trying to reach nuclear capability, with Israel in it sights. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stated that Israel should be wiped off the map.Kristiansen said the would-be buyers, after presenting their initial requests, added to their list more sensitive products and proposed financing and transportation to get around Norwegian export regulations. We have… seen how small companies with falling revenues and liquidity problems can become potential targets for procurement actors, she said. Such firms are in a vulnerable position and will potentially have a hard time saying no to lucrative contract offers.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Huge fire sweeps across central Florida
– Tue Mar 1, 3:40 pm ET

MIAMI (AFP) – Firefighters were battling a fast-moving, massive blaze and clouds of thick smoke that prompted evacuations and highway closures in central Florida, though tempered in part by heavy downpours. The fire, which began on Monday, spread quickly. By dawn on Tuesday, it had swept over an area of more than 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares), forcing hard-hit Brevard County to declare a state of emergency.

Schools were closed, many homes were evacuated and other residents were asked to take precautions and be prepared to deal with the effects of smoke for several days to come.We are advising people to use extreme caution, said Cliff Frazier, spokesman for the Florida Division of Forestry.Emergency response officials did not report any injuries so far.Strong winds spread the fire and smoke from Brevard County, east of Orlando, to Volusia County in the north, where the local emergency personnel said about 20 homes were evacuated in Scottsmoor. The flames shut down close to 30 miles (45 kilometers) of the I-95, a major interstate highway that runs through Florida, from late Monday to early Tuesday, snarling traffic for tens of thousands of commuters. But heavy rainfall helped improve visibility and facilitated efforts by firefighters.

Rain and snowmelt trigger Midwest flooding
– Tue Mar 1, 1:49 pm ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Rivers and streams swollen by rain and melting snow spilled flood waters into communities across Illinois, Indiana and Ohio on Tuesday, killing one woman whose vehicle was swept into a river. There were also four storm-related deaths in Tennessee, and flash floods struck in the mountainous eastern part of the state, authorities said.Strong storms lashed the region with high winds and up to five inches of rain beginning on Sunday, adding to run-off from melting snow and ice to push rivers out of their banks.Dozens of people had to be rescued in and around Findlay, Ohio, as flood waters from the cresting Blanchard River inundated residential neighborhoods and part of downtown. The fast-flowing river crested early on Tuesday and was gradually receding, and the city of 37,000 was spared compared to the worst of five floods experienced in 2007 and 2008, Mayor Pete Sehnert said by telephone. We've bought a lot of properties up and tore a lot of homes down that in the past would have been in the path of the waters, Sehnert said. Residents were warned about the coming flood and volunteers stacked tens of thousands of sandbags.

Water and electricity services were on in Findlay, but schools and many businesses were closed, Sehnert said. The city divided its police and fire personnel on either side of the river in anticipation of bridges being shut down.Overflowing rivers and creeks across northern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio flooded roads, golf courses, farmland and some homes, the National Weather Service said. It issued dozens of flood warnings, noting some rivers had yet to crest.Across northern Ohio, 700 people were evacuated from their homes, said Tamara McBride of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency. There have been more people who have chosen not to evacuate. We really don't know yet the number of people affected, McBride said. The 51-year-old woman who died was traveling near Norwalk when flood waters from a tributary swept her vehicle off the road and into the overflowing Huron River, McBride said. The deaths in Tennessee included two victims who died when trees fell on their trailer homes, a worker who was sucked into a culvert, and a motorist who crashed on a water-covered road, Jeremy Heidt of the state's emergency management agency said(Reporting by Andrew Stern; Editing by Jerry Norton)

Bernanke says costly oil no threat to U.S. economy By Pedro Nicolaci da Costa and Mark Felsenthal – Tue Mar 1, 5:28 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Tuesday the surge in oil prices is unlikely to hurt the U.S. economy unless it is sustained, even as investors sold off equities on fears of a slowdown.Bernanke, making his first comments since the turmoil in Libya drove U.S. crude oil above $100 a barrel, said he would expect higher prices to lead to only a modest, temporary increase in U.S. inflation at most. The Fed chief told the U.S. Senate Banking Committee he saw increasing evidence that the economic recovery has enough momentum to become self-supporting. But job growth remains far too anemic, he said, indicating the Fed was unlikely to cut short its $600 billion bond-buying stimulus. We do see some grounds for optimism about the job market over the next few quarters, Bernanke said, citing a steep recent decline in the jobless rate among other factors.Bernanke, who will testify for a second day before a House of Representatives committee on Wednesday, also reiterated a warning that a failure by Congress to raise the U.S. government's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling could lead to a devastating debt default.

It would be extremely dangerous and very likely a recovery-ending event, he said. The U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday said the debt limit could be reached as early as April 15, 10 days later than its previous estimate.Bernanke's warning came just hours before the House approved a short-term funding bill that would avert a looming government shutdown and buy time to fashion a longer-term budget. The Senate was expected to quickly take up the measure. Some Republicans have vowed to use the need to raise the debt ceiling as a lever to push for deep spending cuts.Bernanke told the panel that downside risks to growth had eased and, for the first time, said the prospect of deflation was now negligible. The threat of deflation, a downward spiral in wages and prices that could derail the economy, was a key justification for the Fed's bond-buying spree. It's encouraging to see that the risk of deflation is moderating according to the Fed, said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington. That's one of the keys that will be necessary for the Fed to wind down its quantitative easing program.

NO SPILLOVER

At the same time, Bernanke did not appear concerned that the recent spike in the price of crude oil, driven in part by a wave of pro-democracy revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa, would do much harm to the U.S. economy. The most likely outcome is that the recent rise in commodity prices will lead to, at most, a temporary and relatively modest increase in U.S. consumer price inflation, Bernanke said. However, he warned that if expectations of future inflation were to build, the Fed may need to act.We will continue to monitor these developments closely and are prepared to respond as necessary to best support the ongoing recovery in a context of price stability, he said.U.S. crude oil futures rose 2.7 percent on Tuesday to settle at $99.63 a barrel, not far from highs hit late last month. Crude had traded at roughly $86 a barrel before protests swept through Egypt in late January.
http://bit.ly/hsRloR)Financial markets showed little reaction to Bernanke's comments, but the jump in oil prices weighed on stocks, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index closing down 1.57 percent. Wall Street's so-called fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index, jumped 13.1 percent. U.S. government bond prices rose as investors sought safety. With official interest rates held near zero since December 2008, the Fed in November embarked on a controversial program to buy government debt to keep down long-term interest rates. Bernanke said buoyant financial markets suggest the policy is working, but the labor market still has a long way to go. In January, the jobless rate stood at 9 percent.Until we see a sustained period of job creation, we cannot consider the recovery to be truly established, Bernanke said.

MANDATE BATTLE BREWING

Much of the discussion at the hearing centered around Washington's heated budget debate. Bernanke refrained from offering detailed advice on fiscal matters, but urged lawmakers to get the deficit under control. The long-term imbalances are not just a long-term risk,Bernanke said. They're a near and present danger. The banking committee's chairman, Democrat Tim Johnson, kicked off the session with a strong defense of the Fed's dual mandate of price stability and maximum sustainable employment. Some Republicans who have been critical of the Fed's ultra-easy monetary policy have vowed to introduce legislation forcing the central bank to focus solely on inflation. Johnson suggested that would not be an easy fight. As the economy continues to struggle to recover, we should be using every tool in the toolbox to create jobs and spur growth, he said in a statement. Taking tools away from the Fed now is the wrong idea at the wrong time.(Additional reporting by Emily Kaiser, Doug Palmer, Lucia Mutikani and Tim Ahmann; Editing by Tim Ahmann, James Dalgleish and Leslie Adler)

Oil price fuels Wall Street selling By Angela Moon – Tue Mar 1, 5:35 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Concerns that rising oil prices could hurt economic recovery prompted investors on Tuesday to sell stocks and hedge against further declines. The CBOE Volatility Index VIX (.VIX), Wall Street's so-called fear gauge, jumped 14.5 percent to 21.01 on growing uncertainty about oil. The index measures the cost of using options as insurance against a decline in the S&P 500 (.SPX) index. We've been seeing how quickly the VIX can spike up, and there is no reason to believe that it won't double from where it is now, said Harry Rady, CEO of Rady Asset Management in San Diego, California.Brent crude rose above $116 a barrel as supply disruptions persist and political violence spreads in the Middle East and North Africa. Higher oil translates into increased energy and gasoline costs for consumers.U.S. crude and gasoline futures extended gains in extended-hours trading after data showed domestic crude inventories unexpectedly fell. U.S. stock index futures fell slightly, with S&P futures off 3.3 points.Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the recent surge in oil was unlikely to derail the economy, but his comments did little to reassure investors worried that turmoil in the Middle East could hit Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter. The Dow Jones Transports index (.DJT) fell 2.5 percent.

Stocks have taken their cue from oil since the start of turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa in January. The S&P had its weakest performance since November last week but still tallied three months of gains. The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) fell 169.38 points, or 1.39 percent, at 12,056.96. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 21.04 points, or 1.59 percent, to 1,306.18. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) lost 44.86 points, or 1.61 percent, to 2,737.41.About 8.67 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, higher than last year's daily average of 8.47 billion. Volume has recently been solid on days when the market falls, but often comes under 7 billion on up days.Investors took a cautious stance as cyclical sectors experienced the biggest losses, while defensive sectors such as utilities, healthcare and consumer staples limited losses.Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) and Coca-Cola Co (KO.N) helped the Dow to limit losses. Wal-Mart rose 0.2percent to $52.06, while Coca-Cola was up 1.5 percent to $64.91.Gasoline and heating oil futures each gained about 3.5 percent to $3. The S&P's materials (.GSPM) index dropped 2.3 percent while the industrials (.GSPI) dropped 2.2 percent. According to AAA, the national average price of regular unleaded gasoline is currently at $3.35 per gallon. The real story is gasoline, said Nick Kalivas an analyst, at MF Global in Chicago. The market is getting worried that you could see $4 gasoline in the U.S.

Financial stocks came under pressure after JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) said it could face material fines and significant legal costs from a wide-ranging probe into the industry's foreclosure practices.JP Morgan fell 2.3 percent to $45.60 while the KBW bank index (.BKX) fell 2.3 percent.Declining stocks outpaced advancing stocks on the NYSE by a ratio of about 3 to 1, while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers by a ratio of 10 to 3.(Reporting by Angela Moon, Editing by Kenneth Barry)

SEC charges ex-Goldman director in insider case
By Jonathan Stempel – Tue Mar 1, 6:22 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A former Goldman Sachs Group Inc director leaked secret details to Galleon Group hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam about Warren Buffett's plan to invest $5 billion in the Wall Street bank at the height of the financial crisis, a U.S. securities regulator charged. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said the director, Rajat Gupta, tipped Rajaratnam by phone just minutes before the public learned of the investment by Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc, which helped ensure Goldman's stability.Gupta, a former worldwide managing director at consulting firm McKinsey & Co, was also accused of tipping Rajaratnam about quarterly earnings at Goldman and Procter & Gamble Co, where he was a director before resigning on Tuesday.

The 62-year-old Gupta is one of the highest-ranking corporate executives implicated in the government's wide-ranging insider trading probe, which has resulted in criminal or civil charges against dozens of individuals.Tuesday's charges mark the first time that activity said to have occurred at Goldman was directly implicated in the probe. The SEC said Rajaratnam, who faces a March 8 criminal insider trading trial, used the tips to trade at his firm, Galleon Group, reaping more than $18 million of illegal gains. It said Gupta invested in at least some Galleon hedge funds.Gupta was honored with the highest trust of leading public companies, and he betrayed that trust by disclosing their most sensitive and valuable secrets, SEC enforcement chief Robert Khuzami said in a statement. Directors who violate the sanctity of board room confidences for private gain will be held to account for their illegal actions. The SEC began administrative and cease-and-desist proceedings against Gupta. It described Gupta as a friend and business associate of Rajaratnam.
Based on the allegations in the order instituting the administrative proceedings, it appears the SEC has a powerful, circumstantial case against Gupta, said Kathleen Hamm, managing director at Promontory Financial Group in Washington and a former SEC enforcement official.

TOTALLY BASELESS CHARGES, LAWYER SAYS

Gary Naftalis, a lawyer for Gupta, called the SEC allegations totally baseless, and said his client had lost his entire $10 million investment in a Galleon fund that Rajaratnam managed, known as GB Voyager.Mr. Gupta has done nothing wrong, Naftalis said in a statement. There is no allegation that Mr. Gupta traded in any of these securities or shared in any profits as part of any quid pro quo.Gupta sat on Goldman's board from November 2006 until last May and served on its corporate governance committee. The Westport, Connecticut, resident had served on Procter & Gamble's board since 2007 before resigning on Tuesday. He's stepping down in the interest of the company, to prevent any distraction to the P&G board or our business, company spokesman Paul Fox said.Rajaratnam also faces SEC civil charges. He has denied wrongdoing.

This is simply an effort to destroy a favorable witness, John Dowd, a lawyer for Rajaratnam, said in a statement about the Gupta charges. There is no case, absolutely none. No conversations, no benefit, no nothing. These are old friends and Mr. Gupta is a distinguished human being.Goldman spokesman Ed Canaday declined to comment. Berkshire did not return a request for comment. It is striking the SEC refers to phone calls immediately before the trades, said Kip Weissman, a partner at Luse Gorman Pomerenk & Schick PC in Washington and a former SEC enforcement lawyer. This suggests there was a witness, or that the SEC has more circumstantial evidence.
Gupta is one of a web of associates in Corporate America that investigators have said Rajaratnam used to learn advance tips about potentially market-moving news. A Harvard Business School graduate, Gupta was previously worldwide managing director at McKinsey, where he worked for more than three decades. The Gupta case does not help in instilling confidence in Main Street investors that they're getting a fair shake at these multinational companies, said Michael Nix, co-chief investment officer at Greenwood Capital Associates LLC.In trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Goldman fell $2.47, or 1.5 percent, to close at $161.31, while Procter & Gamble fell 31 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $62.74.

MULTIPLE TIPS ALLEGED

Prosecutors have said a Morgan Stanley banker also leaked inside information that found its way to Rajaratnam.Former McKinsey consultant Anil Kumar pleaded guilty in January 2010 to leaking inside information about a possible merger to Rajaratnam, in return for $1.75 million.White-collar defense lawyers said civil administrative proceedings may afford the SEC a more friendly forum in which to pursue its case. They also allow the regulator to avoid having to amend its own lawsuit against Rajaratnam. It's faster, the evidence rules are more liberal, and the SEC can wield a bigger hammer in penalties, which can include barring someone from the securities industry. Weissman said. The SEC alleged Gupta tipped Rajaratnam about Goldman's results for the second and fourth quarters of 2008, resulting in more than $16.6 million of illicit gains. It said he also tipped Rajaratnam about Procter & Gamble's results for the final quarter of 2008, resulting in more than $570,000 of profit. The SEC said Gupta had at least two phone calls with Rajaratnam shortly before Goldman announced Berkshire's investment on September 23, 2008.It said one call came just before the market closed that day, immediately after Gupta had disconnected from a phone link to the board meeting where Goldman approved the investment. Goldman announced the Berkshire stake after markets closed.Rajaratnam's trades in Goldman based on these tips resulted in more than $900,000 of profit, the SEC said.

U.S. warns of civil war in Libya unless Gaddafi goes
By Maria Golovnina - MAR 1,11

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Libya could descend into civil war unless Muammar Gaddafi quits, the United States said on Tuesday, its demand for his departure intensifying pressure on the longtime leader after news of Western military preparations.Gaddafi remained defiant, dispatching forces to a western border area amid fears that the most violent Arab revolt may grow bloodier and cause a humanitarian crisis.Tunisian border guards fired into the air on Tuesday to try to control a crowd of people clamoring to cross the frontier and escape the violence.About 70,000 people have passed through the Ras Jdir border post in the past two weeks, and many more of the hundreds of thousands of foreign workers in Libya are expected to follow.Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam warned the West against launching any military action to topple Gaddafi, and said the veteran ruler would not step down or go into exile.Using force against Libya is not acceptable. There's no reason, but if they want...we are ready, we are not afraid, he told Sky television, adding: We live here, we die here.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told U.S. lawmakers: Libya could become a peaceful democracy or it could face protracted civil war.She said the Obama administration would look into allegations that Gaddafi personally ordered the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, because of new statements by defecting Libyan officials making it clear that the order came from the very top.The United States said it was moving ships and planes closer to the oil-producing North African state. The destroyer USS Barry moved through the Suez Canal on Monday and into the Mediterranean. Two amphibious assault ships, the USS Kearsarge, which can carry 2,000 Marines, and the USS Ponce, are in the Red Sea and are expected to go through the canal early on Wednesday.

U.S. RULES NOTHING OUT

The White House said the ships were being redeployed in preparation for possible humanitarian efforts but stressed it was not taking any options off the table. We are looking at a lot of options and contingencies. No decisions have been made on any other actions, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe sounded a note of caution, saying military intervention would not happen without a clear United Nations mandate.British Prime Minister David Cameron said it was unacceptable that Colonel Gaddafi can be murdering his own people using airplanes and helicopter gunships.General James Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, told a Senate hearing that imposing a no-fly zone would be a challenging operation that would mean actual attack. You would have to remove air defense capability in order to establish a no-fly zone, so no illusions here, he said.It would be a military operation -- it wouldn't be just telling people not to fly airplanes.Analysts said Western leaders were in no mood to rush into conflict after the troubled, drawn-out involvements in Afghanistan and Iraq. They will be desperate not to place themselves in that situation, unless not doing so would result in even worse massacres, said Shashank Joshi of London's Royal United Services Institute.

Suspicions grew that Gaddafi, a survivor of past coup attempts, did not grasp the scale of the forces against him.All my people love me, he told the ABC network and the BBC on Monday, dismissing the significance of a rebellion that has ended his control over much of oil-rich eastern Libya.

REBELS CLAIM STRENGTH GROWING

Rebel fighters claimed the balance of the conflict was swinging their way.Our strength is growing and we are getting more weapons. We are attacking checkpoints, said Yousef Shagan, a spokesman in Zawiyah, only 50 km (30 miles) from Tripoli.A rebel army officer in the eastern city of Ajdabiyah said rebel units were becoming more organised. All the military councils of Free Libya are meeting to form a unified military council to plan an attack on Gaddafi security units, militias and mercenaries, Captain Faris Zwei said. He said there were more than 10,000 volunteers in the city, plus defecting soldiers.Rebels guarding a munitions store said they feared a direct hit by Gaddafi's warplanes could cause destruction for miles around. But Zwei said pilots appeared to be aiming to miss. We have complete confidence in the Libyan air force not to hit anything that affects their relatives in the east, he said.Despite the widespread collapse of Gaddafi's writ, his forces were fighting back in some regions.A reporter on the Tunisian border saw Libyan troops reassert control at a crossing abandoned on Monday, and residents of Nalut, about 60 km (35 miles) from the border, said they feared pro-Gaddafi forces were planning to recapture the town.Mohamed, a resident of rebel-held Misrata, told Reuters by phone: Symbols of Gaddafi's regime have been swept away from the city. Only a (pro-Gaddafi) battalion remains at the city's air base but they appear to be willing to negotiate safe exit out of the air base. We are not sure if this is genuine or just a trick to attack the city again.Across the country, tribal leaders, officials, military officers and army units have defected to the rebels. Sanctions will squeeze his access to funds.

BREAD QUEUES

Tripoli is a clear Gaddafi stronghold, but even in the capital, loyalties are divided. Many on the streets on Tuesday expressed loyalty but a man who described himself as a military pilot said: One hundred percent of Libyans don't like him. There were queues outside bread shops on Tuesday morning. Some residents said many shops were limiting the number of loaves customers could buy.The U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday unanimously suspended Libya's membership of the U.N. Human Rights Council because of violence by Libyan forces against protesters.A U.N. Security Council resolution on Saturday called for a freeze on Gaddafi's assets and a travel ban and refers his crackdown to the International Criminal Court.Libya's National Oil Corporation said output had halved because of the departure of foreign workers.Brent crude prices surged above $116 a barrel as supply disruptions and the potential for more unrest in the Middle East and North Africa kept investors on edge.(Additional reporting by Yvonne Bell and Chris Helgren in Tripoli, Dina Zayed and Caroline Drees in Cairo, Tom Pfeiffer, Alexander Dziadosz and Mohammed Abbas in Benghazi, Yannis Behrakis and Douglas Hamilton; Christian Lowe and Hamid Ould Ahmed in Algiers, Souhail Karam and Marie-Louise Gumuchian in Rabat and Samia Nakhoul, William Maclean and Alex Lawler in London; writing by Andrew Roche; editing by Angus MacSwan)

Gaddafi defiant as West flexes military muscle
By Maria Golovnina - MAR 1,11

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Two U.S. warships were to pass through the Suez Canal on Wednesday heading toward Libya as Western nations sought to keep up pressure on Muammar Gaddafi to end a crackdown on a popular uprising and to step down. The United States warned Libya could descend into civil war unless Gaddafi quits, amid fears that the most violent Arab revolt may grow bloodier and cause a humanitarian crisis.

But Gaddafi remained defiant and his son, Saif al-Islam, warned the West against launching military action and said the veteran ruler would not step down or go into exile.Italy said it was sending a humanitarian mission to Tunisia to provide food and medical aid to as many as 10,000 people who had fled violence in neighboring Libya.Tunisian border guards fired into the air on Tuesday to try to control a crowd of people clamoring to cross the frontier.About 70,000 people have passed through the Ras Jdir border post in the past two weeks, and many more of the hundreds of thousands of foreign workers in Libya are expected to follow.Using force against Libya is not acceptable. No decisions have been made on any other actions, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe sounded a note of caution, saying military intervention would not happen without a clear United Nations mandate.British Prime Minister David Cameron, who said Britain would work with allies on preparations for a no-fly zone in Libya, said it was unacceptable that Colonel Gaddafi can be murdering his own people using airplanes and helicopter gunships.General James Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, told a Senate hearing that imposing a no-fly zone would be a challenging operation. You would have to remove air defense capability in order to establish a no-fly zone, so no illusions here, he said.It would be a military operation.Analysts said Western leaders were in no mood to rush into the conflict after drawn-out involvements in Afghanistan and Iraq.Gaddafi, a survivor of past coup attempts, told the U.S. ABC network and the BBC on Monday: All my people love me, dismissing the significance of a rebellion that has ended his control over much of oil-rich eastern Libya.

REBELS SAY STRENGTH GROWING

Rebel fighters said the balance of the conflict was swinging their way. Our strength is growing and we are getting more weapons. We are attacking checkpoints, said Yousef Shagan, a spokesman in Zawiyah, 50 km (30 miles) from Tripoli. A rebel army officer in the eastern city of Ajdabiyah said rebel units were becoming more organized. All the military councils of Free Libya are meeting to form a unified military council to plan an attack on Gaddafi security units, militias and mercenaries, Captain Faris Zwei said. He said there were more than 10,000 volunteers in the city, plus defecting soldiers. The New York Times reported that the rebels' revolutionary council was debating whether to ask for Western airstrikes on some of Gaddafi's military assets under a United Nations banner. The Times said Abdel-Hafidh Ghoga, the council's spokesman, declined to comment on its deliberations but said: If it is with the United Nations, it is not a foreign intervention, which the rebels have said they oppose. The Times said there was no indication the U.N. Security Council would approve such a request, or that Libyans seeking to oust Gaddafi would welcome it.Despite the widespread collapse of Gaddafi's writ, his forces were fighting back in some regions. A reporter on the Tunisian border saw Libyan troops reassert control at a crossing abandoned on Monday, and residents of Nalut, about 60 km (35 miles) from the border, said they feared pro-Gaddafi forces were planning to recapture the town.Mohamed, a resident of rebel-held Misrata, told Reuters by phone: Symbols of Gaddafi's regime have been swept away from the city.

Tripoli is a clear Gaddafi stronghold, but even in the capital, loyalties are divided. Many on the streets on Tuesday expressed loyalty but a man who described himself as a military pilot said: One hundred percent of Libyans don't like him.The U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday unanimously suspended Libya's membership of the U.N. Human Rights Council. A U.N. Security Council resolution on Saturday called for a freeze on Gaddafi's assets and a travel ban and refers his crackdown to the International Criminal Court. The United States has frozen $30 billion in Libyan assets.Libya's National Oil Corp said output had halved because of the departure of foreign workers. Brent crude prices surged above $116 a barrel as supply disruptions and the potential for more unrest in the Middle East and North Africa kept investors on edge.Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper, citing unnamed U.S. sources, said British special forces were preparing to seize mustard gas and other potential chemical weapons in Libya. It quoted unnamed British sources as saying they had not yet received a specific U.S. request for involvement, but officials said plans were being drawn up for every eventuality.(Additional reporting by Yvonne Bell and Chris Helgren in Tripoli, Dina Zayed and Caroline Drees in Cairo, Tom Pfeiffer, Alexander Dziadosz and Mohammed Abbas in Benghazi, Yannis Behrakis and Douglas Hamilton; Christian Lowe and Hamid Ould Ahmed in Algiers, Souhail Karam and Marie-Louise Gumuchian in Rabat and Samia Nakhoul, William Maclean and Alex Lawler in London; writing by Janet Lawrence; editing by Philip Barbara)

Iran forces fire teargas at protesters: pro-reform websites
– Tue Mar 1, 12:45 pm ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iranian security forces fired teargas and clashed with anti-government protesters demonstrating against the treatment of opposition leaders, pro-reform websites reported on Tuesday.Thousands of demonstrators poured into the streets of Tehran and other cities, chanting slogans against the government, Sahamnews reported.Security forces and plainclothes agents fired teargas and clashed with demonstrators in Tehran to disperse them, another opposition website Kaleme reported.Protesters have formed groups in hundreds and are marching toward Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square.Potesters demanded the release of Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, forced to stay in their homes in Tehran since February 14. In the meantime, thousands of their supporters have taken to the streets, defying a heavy security presence, to back uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, Sahamnews said.Seeking to avoid a revival of mass anti-government rallies that erupted after a disputed 2009 presidential election, the authorities had warned against any illegal gatherings after some opposition websites posted calls for a rally on Tuesday.Riot police attacked protesters with batons and electric shocks in Tehran, Kaleme reported.

Two people were killed and dozens arrested during a February 14 rally, the first big show of opposition since the elite Revolutionary Guards crushed street protests in December 2009.The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, which has staff in the United States and Germany, quoted an informed source as saying Mousavi and Karoubi, along with their wives, had been moved from their homes to a safe house in an area close to Tehran. The judiciary denied reports on Monday that the two had been jailed. Their arrest might ignite tension in the Islamic Republic with hardline rulers wary about any spillover of popular turmoil in the Arab world into Iran.In London, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement he was deeply concerned by reports that Mousavi and Karoubi had been moved from their houses to an Iranian detention center.I call on the Iranian authorities to release both men immediately, Hague said, adding that calls by pro-government Iranian parliamentarians for the opposition leaders to be executed were inexcusable.Sahamnews said tension was increasingly growing in Tehran and some other cities, adding that large numbers of security personnel were stationed at main streets and squares in Tehran to prevent gathering of opposition supporters.Gunshots were heard around Enqelab (Revolution) Square and nearby streets,Kaleme reported.

Hardliners have urged the judiciary to hand down death penalties to opposition leaders, accusing them of being part of a Western plot to overthrow the Islamic system.Mousavi and Karoubi, who spearheaded protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election in 2009, say the reform movement is still alive despite mounting pressure on opposition supporters.(editing by Paul Taylor)

Yemeni president says US and Israel behind unrest By AHMED AL-HAJ, Associated Press – Tue Mar 1, 6:36 pm ET

SANAA, Yemen – Yemen's embattled president on Tuesday accused the U.S., his closest ally, of instigating the mounting protests against him, but the gambit failed to slow the momentum for his ouster.Hundreds of thousands rallied in cities across Yemen against the government of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in the largest of the protests of the past month, including one addressed by an influential firebrand cleric, a former ally of Saleh, whom the U.S. has linked to al-Qaida.Go on until you achieve your demands, Sheik Abdul-Majid al-Zindani told tens of thousands of demonstrators in the capital of Sanaa. A former U.S. ambassador to Yemen called al-Zindani's decision to turn against President Ali Abdullah Saleh a major setback for the president. Some warned that the current political turmoil and possible collapse of Saleh's regime could give a further opening to Yemen's offshoot of the global terror network, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.James Jones, former White House National Security Advisor, warned a Washington conference that Yemen's crisis could deepen the current vacuum of power in Yemen on which al Qaida has thrived. The Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, believed to have been involved in the attempted 2009 bombing of an American airliner, is seen as particularly active and threatening to the U.S.

Saleh has been a weak but important U.S. ally in the fight against al-Qaida, accepting tens of millions of dollars in U.S. military and other aid and allowing American drone strikes on al-Qaida targets.Garry Reid, deputy assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism, told the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington think tank, that the Saleh government was the best partner we're going to have ... and hopefully it will survive because I certainly would have to start over again in what we've tried to build.Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited Yemen in January and urged Saleh to do more.

However, on Tuesday, Saleh seemed to be turning on Washington. In a speech to about 500 students and lecturers at Sanaa University, he claimed the U.S., along with Israel, is behind the protest movement.I am going to reveal a secret, he said. There is an operations room in Tel Aviv with the aim of destabilizing the Arab world. The operations room is in Tel Aviv and run by the White House.Saleh also alleged that opposition figures meet regularly with the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa. Regrettably those (opposition figures) are sitting day and night with the American ambassador where they hand him reports and he gives them instructions, Saleh said. The Obama administration rejected these claims. White House spokesman Jay Carney called on Saleh to focus on implementing the political reforms demanded by his people instead of scapegoating.Saleh's relationship with the U.S. has been ambivalent, and he has at times attempted to play down his military alliance with Washington. Anti-U.S. sentiment remains strong in Yemen, as elsewhere in the region, and Saleh's comments appeared to be an attempt to discredit the protesters by suggesting they are serving foreign interests.Part of this is putting blame on others, part of it is trying to manage the situation, said Christopher Boucek, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a U.S. think tank. He (Saleh) does not want to feed into grievances that gave rise to the opposition against him, such as being too close to the U.S.Thomas Krajeski, senior vice president of the U.S. National Defense University and former U.S. ambassador to Yemen, gave the Saleh regime a 50-50 chance of surviving the current crisis and he said it's not clear who is likely to succeed him. We just don't know what comes next, Krajeski told a conference at Washington's Bipartisan Policy Center.

But Krajeski predicted that Yemen's tribes would quickly step in to establish a new government rather than let the country become what he called an ungoverned mess, like Somalia.Jonathan Ruhe, a policy analyst for the Bipartisan Policy Center, said: It's kind of hard to imagine a post-Saleh world. If he should fall, the future is wide open.In another attempt to silence critics, Saleh fired five of the country's 22 provincial governors Tuesday, including three who had spoken out against the government's at times violent crackdown on demonstrators. In London, Britain's Foreign Office summoned a senior Yemeni diplomat to express deep concern over the deaths of protesters at rallies. The government of Yemen should listen to the legitimate grievances of the Yemeni people, the Foreign Office said. The momentum against the president, who refuses to step down until elections in 2013, has kept growing since protests erupted a month ago — inspired by successful uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. He has lost the support of key tribal chiefs and on Tuesday, opposition parties called their supporters into the streets for the first time. Crowds of tens of thousands each were reported in five areas of the country, including in Sanaa.Saleh's government is widely seen as corrupt, with relatives of the president holding key positions in government and business. Grievances about the growing disparity between Yemen's poor — nearly half the population of some 23 million — and a small ruling clique have helped drive the protests. Yemen is the Arab world's poorest country. In the port city of Aden, the scene of deadly clashes between police and demonstrators last week, thousands rallied Tuesday to express their anger. We are demonstrating and calling for the downfall of the regime because Aden, under Saleh, has turned into a village, said Faiza al-Sharbary, a 45-year-old teacher. At one time, it was one of the best cities. Therefore this regime has to leave. In Sanaa, tens of thousands gathered outside the university, the heart of the protests.Al-Zindani, the influential Islamic cleric, praised the young protesters, saying their rallies are a new way to change regimes that we did not know 50 years ago.Go on until you achieve your demands, he told them. You have come out demanding changes as a result of desperation.Al-Zindani's role appeared unclear. Saleh, in power for 32 years, has tried to co-opt the preacher, appointing him last year as a mediator between the government and opposition parties over electoral reform.

However, al-Zindani is also thought by the United States to be a one-time spiritual mentor of Osama bin Laden. He has been placed on the U.S. list of terrorist financiers, and is the subject of travel and financial sanctions by the U.S. and the United Nations. In the past, the cleric has criticized the U.S.-backed fight against al-Qaida, warning that it could lead to a foreign occupation of Yemen. Some in Yemen said the current turmoil could strengthen the local al-Qaida branch. One of the principal worries of our regional and global partners has been that if Yemen goes into anarchy, the possibility of al-Qaida having easy access should be quite clear, said Mohamed Qubaty, a senior member of Yemen's ruling party.Krajeski, the former U.S. ambassador to Yemen, said al-Zidani's decision to criticize Saleh and questioned his legitimacy was a major setback for the government. That's a big deal, he said. Saleh worked very hard to keep this guy in control. If Zindani is breaking with him that is another knock on his base.Krajeski added though that he didn't think that radical Islam was a big factor in the current unrest, although it was part of the general opposition to Saleh's government.Yemen has been the site of numerous anti-U.S. attacks, going back to the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Aden harbor, which killed 17 American sailors. Late last year, several CIA operatives were targeted in a failed bombing at a restaurant in a Sanaa suburb. Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula was also thought to be behind the attempted bombing of an American airliner landing in Detroit in 2009.Associated Press writers Matthew Lee and Douglas Birch in Washington, Raphael Satter in London and Karin Laub in Cairo contributed reporting.

ISAIAH 66:15-18
15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.
17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.

ISAIAH 26:21

7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:(FROM FRIGHT)
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

ZEPHANIAH 1:18

HALF OF EARTHS POPULATION DIE DURING THE 7 YR TRIBULATION.(THESE VERSES ARE JUDGEMENT SCRIPTURES NOT RAPTURE SCRIPTURES)

LUKE 17:34-37
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.(Christians have new bodies, this is the people against Jerusalem during the 7 yr treaty)(Christians bodies are not being eaten by the birds).

MATTHEW 24:37-51
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.

DANIEL 11:36-39
36 And the king (EU DICTATOR) shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS JEWISH) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.(CLAIM TO BE GOD)
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(WAR) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god,(DESTROY TERROR GROUPS) whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.

REVELATION 19:19
19 And I saw the beast,(EU LEADER) and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse,(JESUS) and against his army.(THE RAPTURED CHRISTIANS)

Report--Obama quietly appoints Muslim Brotherhood to key posts
February 15th, 2011 12:56 pm ET
.

An ex-CIA agent and counter-intelligence expert has revealed in a special report that Barack Obama has quietly appointed members of the Muslim Brotherhood to key posts within the Administration. Dr. Clare Lopez, professor at the Centre for Counterintelligence and Security Studies, wrote a policy paper in December of 2009 which details the systematic appointment of Sharia-friendly advocates within the State Department and other government agencies. For example, the Tehran-born Dr. Vali Nasr was appointed to co-direct Obama foreign policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan. Former Saudi Arabian supplicant Charles Freeman was appointed by Obama to chair the Administration's National Intelligence Council, but withdrew his name when it was revealed he issued a 2-page screed in which he postulated a conspiracy theory claiming he had been 'victimized' by American supporters of Israel. In addition, John Limbert was appointed to direct U.S. policy toward the Islamist regime in Iran. Limbert, who was taken hostage during the Iranian upheaval of the late 70s-early 80s, is an Iranian sympathizer who advocates negotiation with one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world.A video of Lopez's assessment of Islamist influence in the Obama Administration can be found in the top left column. While it is true that some of the initial appointees have departed from the Administration, the fix was already in. The Obama Administration is manned by Sharia-friendly appointees who help steer American foreign policy in the Middle East.

Why is this relevant to 2011?

Events which are currently unfolding in the Middle East are a consequence of the behind-the-scenes work of Islamic advocates within the Administration.According to reports issued by NewsRealBlog, RedState, and LaborUnionReport, secret documents released by Wikileaks indicate that the United States government has been in the process of planning social and political upheaval in the Middle East for at least 2 years--beginning during the waning days of the Bush Administration and continuing under Obama. The goal was to push moderate Muslim dictators out the door in countries such as Egypt, while advocating so-called 'democracy' which would then insure the rise of Muslim Brotherhood-supported Islamists to fill the power-gap.

How would such a grand scheme be accomplished?

The reports expose a consortium of Leftwing organizations, Islamic groups, labor unions, and Obama-friendly corporations which would organize and fund a 'youth movement' in certain areas around the Middle East which would then take to the streets in protest against current governments. Some of the corporations involved are Google, YouTube, MSNBC, Facebook, National Geographic, M-TV, and Pepsi. In addition, the U.S. State Department, Columbia Law School, and various Islamic extremist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR, and others are central to the plot. The goal is to set in motion a domino effect, hoping that regime-change in Eqypt would spread to other nations in the Middle East, and eventually destabilize Europe, and ultimately, the United States. No sooner had Mubarak been ousted in Eqypt than demands were issued for war with Israel. Egypt's government and Constitution were abolished by the military. The Camp David Accords, which has kept peace between Egypt and Israel since the 1970s, was discarded. Then, Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi issued a call to the Muslim world to wage war with Israel. There is upheaval in Jordon and Lebannon as well--Israel's closest neighbors. And while the Obama Administration rushed to jump out in front of the uprising in Egypt to praise its so-called push for democracy, a similar uprising this week in Iran has been met with deafening silence.

Why?

Perhaps some basic facts will provide clues.Obama's top national security advisor declared that the Muslim Brotherhood is a 'secular' organization, non-extremist, and dedicated to peace.Obama himself, in an interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, refused to refer to the Brotherhood as an Islamic extremist organization, in spite of the fact that the group's own charter, and recent statements made by its leadership, indicate exactly that. And a Muslim board member of CPAC, of all things, declared in a news conference that there is no Muslim Brotherhood in the United States, despite the fact that the group issued a document in 1991 indicating its North American objectives. At the very least it is clear that things are not as they seem on the surface in Eqypt, Iran, nor within the Obama Administration and the American Muslim community. And, due to the fact that the mainstream media merely parrots the official Administration propaganda, the American people are being bamboozled.

MEP: Swift secrecy may hamper new data deals with US
VALENTINA POP 28.02.2011 @ 09:29 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – The secrecy in transposing an agreement allowing US investigators to access EU banking data for anti-terrorism purposes has irked MEPs who warn the European Commission and member states they may block other transatlantic data deals.Last year, the so-called Swift agreement was the cause celebre that made the European Parliament for the first time show up on the Obama administration's radar screen. After they vetoed the deal, in February 2010, MEPs managed to win a number of concessions, including as a specially appointed EU person to oversee the transfer of banking data and a role for the bloc's police co-operation agency, Europol, in approving demands for data. But more than half a year after the new deal came into force, MEPs are increasingly worried that the agreement is being circumvented and that any request for information is being stonewalled by EU institutions behind a standard top secret answer.A meeting behind closed doors at the end of January with Europol director Rob Wainwright failed to give satisfactory answers to MEPs dealing with the dossier, not even to a question requesting a rough estimate of the volume of data being handed to the US.None of us understood why that meeting was in camera [held behind closed doors]. It could have very well been public, as there was no information at all communicated to us, recalled Dutch Liberal MEP Sophie in't Veld.Seeing it as a symptom of a widespread culture of secrecy and reluctance to be held accountable, Ms in 't Veld pointed to the fact that the Swift agreement was an attempt to legalise something that was illegal in the first place. The history of the agreement dates back to 2006, when a story published by the New York Times revealed that the US government had been running a covert programme – the Terrorism Finance Tracking Program (TFTP) – set up in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York, in 2001.

The programme consisted in monitoring financial transactions enabled by the Belgium-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (Swift) – an inter-bank communications company used in over 80 percent of international transactions.
Data continued to flow and the EU subsequently tried to legalise the process. With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the European Parliament was granted a veto right over such deals, which it used, in February 2010.Ms in 't Veld has meanwhile filed a series of questions with the European Commission regarding the programme, after it emerged that several requests for information by the German data protection authority and by German MPs were dodged by both Europol and the commission itself. On of the Dutch MEP's questions asks: What does the European Commission think of the classification top secret of all documents relating to the Swift agreement? Others refer to the amount of data transferred so far, the number of requests made by the US and rejected or accepted by Europol and to the actual activity of the EU supervisor sitting in Washington to oversee the compliance of the agreement. There are more agreements coming up which need our consent. Not answering questions and dodging information requests is certainly not fostering mutual trust among EU institutions, said the Dutch politician, who is tasked with formulating the European Parliament's position on another data sharing agreement with the US concerning air passengers' private data.Noting that the European Parliament only gave its consent reluctantly to the deal, Ms in 't Veld argues that if the agreement proves to have too many loopholes in order to escape public scrutiny, this will have an impact on all the other pending agreements.

MEPs will want to secure every comma and every dot, if they cannot ensure that Europol and the European Commission have the same understanding of transparency and accountability as we do, she said.An internal document written by the German delegation in Brussels and published by the UK-based civil liberties watchdog, Statewatch, earlier this month warned that Berlin is deeply concerned about the commission and Europol repeatedly sidestepping questions or not answering them at all. This policy will raise further questions and add to growing scepticism, the German government warned, in reference to several replies given by the two EU institutions in which they claim not to have the authority to interpret the agreement and give a clear-cut answer. The commission, which negotiated on behalf of the European Union, is essential for interpreting the agreement because it is the only one who knows the motivation and attitudes of the contracting partner, Berlin argued, stressing that the current attitude may hamper the establishment of an EU system of analysing banking data on the search for terrorism leads.German media is also keeping a close watch on how the Swift deal is put in practice. Earlier this month, a query ran by the German daily Financial Times Deutschland and an independent Austrian MEP, Martin Ehrenhauser, revealed that a technical loophole allows the US authorities to access even intra-EU banking transactions, which should in theory be excluded from the agreement.According to the investigation, Swiftnet Fin, an older system which is to be phased out by 2013 and that still allows for some 200 million transactions a month in the east African region, is not covered by the agreement. As for Germany's data protection authority, it will continue to monitor with criticism the implementation of the agreement, Juliane Heinrich, the institution's spokeswoman told this website.A review of the first six months of the Swift agreement is due to be finalised by the commission next month.

US and EU states consider military option against Gaddafi
VALENTINA POP Today MAR 1,11 @ 09:38 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – Fighter jets, aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean, a no-fly zone over Libya and arming the rebels are all options being weighed up by the US and its EU allies, as a defiant Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi is continuing to cling onto power and is ordering airstrikes on towns and arms depots.Speaking in the House of Commons on Monday (28 February), British Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK is taking the lead in isolating the illegitimate Gaddafi regime, including by military means. We must not tolerate this regime using military force against its own people. In that context I have asked the Ministry of Defence and the chief of the Defence Staff to work with our allies on plans for a military no-fly zone, he said. When pressed by a Conservative MP on whether the Libyan opposition could be supplied with weapons, Mr Cameron replied: It's certainly something we should be considering. In France, Prime Minister Francois Fillon confirmed that all options are on the table, including a no-fly zone. A military option is being evaluated by the French government, he said.Meanwhile, in Geneva, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said a no-fly zone was being discussed among European allies and the US.Her American counterpart, Hillary Clinton, said: Nothing is off the table so long as the Libyan government continues to threaten and kill Libyans.Meanwhile, a Pentagon spokesman said US military planners are working on various contingency plans and repositioning military ships in the Mediterranean so that they are closer to the Libyan border so as to provide more flexibility once decisions are made.

The US and a number of European countries, including Britain and Germany, have already flown military aircraft into the Libyan desert to help with evacuation efforts, with Mr Cameron unveiling that one of the C-130 Hercules planes suffered minor damage from small arms fire after a rescue operation. As Russia and China seem unwilling to back the idea of a no-fly zone in the UN Security Council, the US and its European allies may go for a Nato decision instead, as was the case during the war in Yugoslavia, a spokesman for the US State Department suggested. The issue of a no-fly zone is something that is under active consideration. Obviously, we're talking to allies about that. How would you do it? Obviously, Nato would be one logical organisation that could undertake such a mission, spokesman Philip J Crowley said.A British military air base in Cyprus could be used to enforce the no-fly zone, as well as Italy's base in Sicily.Foreign intervention – as long as no troops are deployed within the country - seems a valid option for former Gaddafi regime members who have defected to the opposition as well. When push comes to shove, launching airstrikes could be an alternative solution. If we found that no solution was reached on Gaddafi's part or his aides to put an end to these massacres, then all our fellows here in Darna, Al Baida, Ghuba and Benghazi are firm and certain that air strikes must be launched, provided that no jetfighter will land on Libyan territories, former Libyan interior minister Abdel Fattah Younes, who stepped down last week, told Al Jazeera on Monday. They may land in the Italian Anderosa base or the aircraft carrier. Touching down in Libya is acceptable only in the case of an emergency, that's only natural. For example if any pilot was forced to eject, he will be hosted and protected by us, he explained.

A defiant Colonel Gaddafi on Monday told the BBC he is still loved by his people and denied any protests are taking place in Tripoli. His view is strongly contradicted by independent reports, with the UN estimating that several thousand people have been killed in Tripoli and that the security situation in and around the Libyan capital has made it too dangerous for international aid agencies to assess the need for medicine, food and other supplies there. The major concerns are Tripoli and the west where access is extremely difficult because of the security situation, Valerie Amos, the UN humanitarian chief, told Al Jazeera on Monday. As of Monday, an estimated 61,000 had fled into Egypt, 1,000 to Niger and 40,000 to Tunisia, according to the UN, which said there was concern about water and sanitation for the refugees.Fewer than a couple of hundred Europeans are estimated to be in Libya still and awaiting evacuation in the coming days.

EU considering special summit on Libya
ANDREW RETTMAN 28.02.2011 @ 22:07 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU Council chief Herman Van Rompuy is holding talks with member states on a French idea to hold an extraordinary EU summit about Libya and north Africa in Brussels on Thursday (3 March) or Friday. Mr Van Rompuy's spokesman, Dirk De Backer told EUobserver on Monday that the summit proposal is under discussion.A spokesman for EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton, Darren Ennis, said [she] would support the idea and it is her view that if such a summit were to happen, it should happen sooner rather than later.EU diplomatic sources said that French President Nicolas Sarkozy floated the idea at the weekend and that Italy, Spain and the UK are on board. Germany is opposed to the move, while many smaller EU countries, such as Sweden, are not being kept in the loop.An EU official noted it takes at least three days to organise such an event and that other EU summits are already planned for 11 and 24 March. EU leaders from the centre-right and centre-left political families have also tabled pre-summit summits on economic governance in Helsinki and Athens on Friday. Who wants another summit? What would this [the Libya event] be about anyway? an EU diplomat said.Under the Lisbon Treaty, Mr Van Rompuy is supposed to be in charge of calling special summits and Ms Ashton is supposed to lead the way on EU foreign policy. The two spokesmen underlined that if the summit takes place, it would not be a case of France calling the shots. The final decision is to be taken by the president, Mr De Backer said. The organisation of EU summits is of course a matter for President Van Rompuy, Mr Ennis noted. The summit discussion comes amid an EU decision on Monday to top up UN sanctions against the Gaddafi regime. The UN security council on Saturday imposed a travel ban on Moammar Gaddafi and 15 members of his family and top cadre. It also imposed an asset freeze on the colonel and five associates.

The EU on Monday added 10 more names to the travel ban and 20 to the asset freeze. The list of extra EU names is to be made public later in the week. The joint EU-UN names include seven of Gaddafi's sons, his daughter, his top bodyguard, his defence minister and his head of military intelligence. As is normal with EU sanctions, the people on the travel ban will still be able to enter the Union for urgent medical treatment or if an exemption would further the objectives of peace and national reconciliation. In an interesting detail - given that Gaddafi's fortune is being counted in the order of tens of billions of euros - the asset freeze decision shall not apply to the addition to frozen accounts of ... interest or other earnings due on those accounts. It is unclear how the sanctions could affect EU companies, such as Italy's Juventus football club or UniCredit bank, in which Libya holds large stakes.
The UN and EU sanctions also include a ban on sales and shipments of arms and non-lethal riot-control equipment to Libya.Swedish arms-control NGO Sipri on Monday published an alert saying that there have been suspicious flights in and out of Libya in the build-up to the eruption of violence on 15 February.

Europe should have backed democrats not dictators, commissioner says
LEIGH PHILLIPS Today MAR 1,11 @ 09:29 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU commissioner Stefan Fuele has offered an unprecedented mea culpa for Europe's history of support for dictators across north Africa.Criticising what he called the view of a rather offensive Arab exception towards democracy, he told MEPs in Brussels on Monday (28 February): We must show humility about the past. Europe was not vocal enough in defending human rights and local democratic forces in the region.Too many of us fell prey to the assumption that authoritarian regimes were a guarantee of stability in the region, continued Mr Fuele, the former Czech diplomat now in charge of EU enlargement and neighbourhood policy. In a particularly blunt comment, he said that Europe should be standing with pro-democracy demonstrators and not dictators who are killing their citizens. The crowds in the streets of Tunis, Cairo and elsewhere have been fighting in the name of our shared values. It is with them, and for them, that we must work today - not with dictators who are, as we speak, spilling the blood of their own people with utter disregard for human life.He said that Europe must react to developments in its southern neighbourhood the way that it did to similar uprisings against a different series of regimes in its eastern neighbourhood two decades ago: Europe must and will rise to the challenge of supporting democratic transition in north Africa, as it did after the revolutions in Eastern Europe in 1989.He added that concerns over increased migration, access to oil or the an increased visibilty of Islamists should not prevent Europe from supporting democracy in the region.

Yes, there may be rising irregular migration flows originating from Tunisia, Libya and, to some extent, from Egypt. Yes, there will be a certain political vacuum in the newly democratising countries, including an increased visibility of Islamist parties and, at least in some of them, a worry that they may not want to play by the rules of democracy. Yes, there may be rising oil prices, lost investments and business. Yes, there may be potential civil war and instability in Libya. We know that the forces of change that have been unleashed will not produce stable political systems overnight. Yet, we must weather these risks without losing sight of our long-term common objective: a democratic, stable, prosperous and peaceful north Africa.Mr Fuele said that the commission was now ready with a new approach that would match the level of ambition that the parliament has consistently called for.He announced that European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has asked all the different commission departments to identify what initiatives in their own areas can contribute to what he called the new southern Mediterranean.Mr Fuele and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will also issue a policy paper proposal on the subject on 16 March, which will then be considered by EU premiers and presidents at the spring European Council. He signalled a fresh approach to the thorny question of migration from the region, saying that while the EU should continue to ask north African states to prevent irregular migration and co-operate on the return of refugees, he said the bloc should be more ambitious and floated the idea of legalised temporary or circular migration for workers.

He went on to say that Tunisia had made a request along these lines and that making it easier for workers to enter Europe on a legal basis was more desirable than having to deal with sudden mass exoduses. It is preferable to manage this type of migration rather than the humanitarian crises stemming from uncontrolled migration.
However, with an eye to member states that take a hardline perspective on immigration, he said he will need the help of the European Parliament if such strategies were to be embraced. This is another issue on which we will need the full support of this house, he said.

North-south pact

It is the first time an EU-level leader has offered an apology for the strategy. Catherine Ashton, the bloc's foreign policy supremo, has kept silent on the question of support for north African regimes. Carl Bildt, Sweden's foreign minister, came close to making a similar assessment in January shortly after the Tunisian revolution when he wrote on his blog: In the case of Tunisia, it is quite obvious that [European co-operation with north African states] failed. In retrospect, it is reasonable to ask whether we have been sufficiently robust in the requirements of respect also for democratic rights in Tunisia.Finland's foreign policy chief, Alexander Stubb has also made critical remarks. On Monday, Germany's foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, also called for a new ‘north-south' pact between Europe and north Africa, echoing Mr Fuele's sentiment, if not quite so bluntly.First, it is being refuted more and more that, Islam, democracy and progress do not contradict themselves, and second, it is not via an autocratic government, but only by a stable society do we guarantee a stable country, he said, according to FT Deutchland.France for its part has been repeatedly bludgeoned by commentators over the last two months as papers almost on a weekly basis have revealed fresh embarrassing ties between the French political class on both sides of the ideological spectrum and north African regimes. In an attempt to staunch the bad press, France has been at the forefront of calls for stronger EU action over Libya. On Monday, Paris sent two planes to Benghazi, the eastern region of the country Prime Minister Francois Fillon is now describing as liberated territory.

Announcing the move, he added: And you will have seen that France was in the forefront of the decisions taken to sanction Colonel Gaddafi,We were the ones who called on the European Council to adopt a joint position on this matter. However, unlike in Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt, Paris has never had strong ties with the administration in Tripoli. One EU diplomat last week explained how it is that more northerly countries within the Council have tended to be more critical of support for southern despots: The further you are away from immigrants landing on your beaches, the more morally pure you can allow yourself to be.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

With Russia's $650 billion rearmament plan, the bear sharpens its teeth
By Fred Weir - Mon Feb 28, 4:22 pm ET CSM

Moscow – The graying bear is getting a make-over. Russia's military is launching its biggest rearmament effort since Soviet times, including a $650 billion program to procure 1,000 new helicopters, 600 combat planes, 100 warships, and 8 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.Analysts say Russia, while already the world's fifth-largest military spender, needs strong conventional forces to reduce its overreliance on its aging Soviet-era nuclear missile deterrent. Valentin Rudenko, director of the independent Interfax-Military News Agency, says it could create a whole new ballgame. For about two decades we've had no real modernization, at least not like what's being proposed now, he says. Russia will finally have a modern, top-level armed forces that are capable of protecting the country.

Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin last week announced the unprecedented new outlays, which will see a massive re-equipping of Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent as well as its conventional forces. The Defense Ministry today said the modernization drive will begin this year with the deployment of new generations of air defense and antimissile weapons by Russian ground forces. The impressive shopping spree comes on the heels of a painful military reform that severely downsized Russia's conscript Army, eliminating 9 out of 10 Soviet-era units and cutting 200,000 officers. The goal now, experts say, is to equip Russia's new lean-and-mean, largely professional armed forces to face 21st-century threats. These are mainly considered to be regional conflicts such as the brief 2008 Russo-Georgian war, which highlighted military shortcomings.Skepticism over spendingMuch of the new spending will go toward revamping Russia's naval forces, which are slated to receive new submarines, 35 naval corvettes, 15 frigates, and 4 Mistral-type helicopter-transporting amphibious assault ships. Two of the $750 million Mistrals will be purchased from France, and two are to be constructed in Russian shipyards. Some experts are deeply skeptical of the expenditures – especially the expensive purchase of Mistral helicopter carriers, which are designed to project power around the globe rather than fight the defensive and local wars that Russian military doctrine declares as the country's main priority. It's hard to see what our Navy needs these Mistral money pits for, says Viktor Baranets, a former defense ministry spokesman who's now military correspondent for the Moscow daily Komsomolskaya Pravda. He says they may be prestigious, but they require a huge amount of protection. At any time, half the Russian Navy may be employed just escorting these ships around the world.

The new submarines will be designed to deploy a brand-new long-range nuclear missile, the Bulava, which has failed half of its flight tests so far. Defense ministers can make promises, but no designer or engineer can promise that the Bulava will be operational in time, says Mr. Baranets.Uncertainty over new stealth fighterExperts point out that most of the new weaponry to be procured is actually based on old, Soviet-era designs, including the Mi-28 helicopter gunship, the Mi-26 transport helicopter, and the Sukhoi Su-35 multirole fighter plane. These are all designs from the late Soviet period, and not really new at all, says Alexander Golts, military expert with the online newsmagazine Yezhednevny Zhurnal. The lack of fresh designs shows the underlying weakness of our military-industrial complex. The only truly new weapons being rolled out, says Mr. Golts, are the trouble-plagued Bulava missile and the much-hyped fifth-generation fighter plane that Russia is reportedly developing with India. We don't know enough about this Russian fifth-generation fighter to tell whether it is the real thing – a futuristic stealth fighter comparable to the US Air Force's F-22 and F-35 warplanes – or if it's just a jumped-up version of something old, says Golts.Critics say that despite the huge sums of money slated to be injected into the rearmament program, it is far short of the amounts needed to revive Russia's moribund military-industrial complex, which has lost the vast network of subcontractors that existed in Soviet times. This is not the first time the Kremlin has talked about military modernization, says Golts. But all previous programs have failed.

Gaddafi deploys forces as world raises Libya pressure
By Maria Golovnina - MAR 1,11

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi dispatched forces to a western border area on Tuesday in defiance of Western military and economic pressure, stirring fears that the bloodiest Arab revolt may grow more violent. As the West weighed military options, suspicions grew that the veteran leader, in power for 41 years, did not grasp the strength of the forces now gathering against him.In Moscow, a Kremlin source suggested Gaddafi should step down, calling him a living political corpse who has no place in the modern civilized world, Interfax news agency reported. But Gaddafi appeared oblivious to outside pressure. All my people love me. They would die to protect me, he told the U.S. ABC network and the BBC on Monday, dismissing the significance of a rebellion against his 41-year rule that has ended his control over much of eastern Libya.Barely 12 hours after the United States said it was moving warships and air forces closer to the north African oil exporting country, Libyan forces re-asserted their presence at the remote Dehiba southern border crossing on Tuesday, decorating the border post with green Libyan flags.

Reporters on the Tunisian side saw Libyan army vehicles, and soldiers armed with Kalashnikov rifles. The previous day, there was no Libyan security presence at the border crossing. Dehiba is about 60 km (40 miles) from the town of Nalut. In another part of the west, residents said pro-Gaddafi forces deployed to reassert control of Nalut, about 60 km from the Tunisian border in western Libya, to ensure it did not fall into the hands of anti-Gaddafi protesters.Around the Libyan capital there were queues outside bread shops on Tuesday morning. Some residents said many bread shops were limiting the number of loaves customers could buy, forcing people to visit several to get needed supplies. The situation is nervous, said Salah, a 35-year-old doctor at one bread shop where about 15 people were queuing outside.Of course I am worried. My family is afraid. They are waiting at home. We have been hearing gun-fire.But the people are together. I hope the situation calms down. I am 35 and this is the first time I saw something like this in Libya. It is very scary.A resident in the rebel-held town of Zawiyah, 50 km west of Tripoli, told Reuters by telephone that there had been a low-key skirmish with pro-Gaddafi forces on the outskirts of the town overnight but that the situation was now calm.

Our guys opened fire at a checkpoint. They (pro-Gaddafi forces) ran away. We have their anti-aircraft gun and many Kalashnikovs, which they left. Three soldiers died on their side, said the resident, who did not want to be identified. The United States said on Monday it was moving ships and planes closer to the country and British Prime Minister David Cameron said his government would work to prepare a no-fly zone to protect the Libyan people.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on world powers to fully implement the U.N. Security Council resolution on Libya. The text, adopted on Saturday, includes a freeze on Muammar Gaddafi's assets, travel ban and referring his regime's brutal crackdown to the International Criminal Court.
Injecting a note of caution into Western military thinking, France said humanitarian aid must be the priority in Libya rather than military action to oust Gaddafi. The French government has sent two airplanes with medical equipment and staff to the Libyan city of Benghazi, now in the hands of anti-Gaddafi rebels, and more planes are to follow, government spokesman Francois Baroin said.

GADDAFI SCOFFS AT REVOLT

Despite his continued hold on Tripoli, his last remaining stronghold and home to more than 1.5 million people, Gaddafi's power to influence events in his vast desert country has shrunk dramatically in the past two weeks.Numerous tribal leaders, officials, military officers and army units have defected to the rebels, taking with them swathes of the country of six million including the energy-producing east. Sanctions will squeeze his access to funds. Some analysts doubted that Gaddafi would launch a widescale military offensive to regain captured territory given the outside pressure. They interpreted his threats as political maneuvering.Gaddafi is finished if he does it (military attack) and finished if he doesn't. In both cases he is very vulnerable, said UK-based Libyan activist and editor Ashour Shamis. He is losing out sections of Libya very very fast. He has no influence except in Tripoli and even there very small areas are under his control. In another potential blow to Gaddafi, Libya's National Oil Corporation said Libya's oil output had halved because of the departure of oil workers, although installations were undamaged and NOC was still overseeing Libya's oil production and exports.Regional experts expect rebels eventually to take the capital and kill or capture Gaddafi.

But in his interview at a restaurant on Tripoli's Mediterranean coast, Gaddafi, 68, looked relaxed and laughed at times as he scoffed at the uprising. He denied using his air force to attack protesters but said planes had bombed military sites and ammunition depots. He also denied there had been demonstrations and said young people were given drugs by al Qaeda and therefore took to the streets. Libyan forces had orders not to fire back at them, he said. Some see Gaddafi's many media appearances as an astute attempt to use Western satellite television channels to remind a global audience he remains in charge and thereby undermine any notion that his authority is ebbing. There's a battle going on for the narrative, said Shashank Joshi, an analyst at Britain's Royal United Services Institute.A statement by a group of anti-government clerics called the Free Ulema of Libya urged international satellite television companies to stop providing the bandwidth capacity that allowed Libyan television to broadcast Gaddafi's comments globally.Gaddafi, his sons, and associates have been directly ordering killings on Libyan television channels, they said.U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice called Gaddafi's comments to the ABC and BBC delusional.

REFUGEES' ANGER AT THE BORDER

At Ras Jdir on the border with Tunisia, there was growing frustration from the thousands of Egyptian refugees angry that other nationalities were being transported away from the frontier but they were not. Some tore branches from trees and waved them around like clubs, and there were arguments with local officials. When are we going to be taken out of here? We cannot accept this, said one Egyptian at a tent camp about 5 km from the border. Told about reports ships were coming to a nearby port to repatriate Egyptians, he pointed at some camels and said: Give me a camel. I will take a camel. I just want to go home.Revolutions in neighboring Tunisia and Egypt have helped to ignite resentment of four decades of often bloody political repression under Gaddafi as well as his failure to use Libya's oil wealth to tackle widespread poverty and lack of opportunity.Fawaz Gerges, a Middle East expert at the London School of Economics, wrote that the major losers of the wave of Arab uprisings were the autocratic rulers who have bled their societies dry, used blood and iron to suppress dissent, and neglected the hopes and aspirations of their citizens. The winners are the people of the Middle East who have been politically oppressed for decades. Millions of voiceless Arabs and Muslims have regained their voice.(Additional reporting by Yvonne Bell and Chris Helgren in Tripoli, Dina Zayed and Caroline Drees in Cairo, Tom Pfeiffer, Alexander Dziadosz and Mohammed Abbas in Benghazi, Yannis Behrakis and Douglas Hamilton; Christian Lowe and Hamid Ould Ahmed in Algiers, Souhail Karam and Marie-Louise Gumuchian in Rabat; Samia Nakhoul, William Maclean and Alex Lawler in London, Writing by William Maclean; Editing by Samia Nakhoul)

Oman army tries to disperse protests, wounds one
By Jason Benham - MAR 1,11

SOHAR, Oman (Reuters) – Omani troops fired into the air near a northern port on Tuesday to clear a fourth day of protests by Omanis demanding jobs and political reforms, wounding one person in the town of Sohar, witnesses said.We were about 200 to 300 people on the road. The army started shooting in the air, one protester in Sohar said, declining to be named. Many people ran. The man who was shot came to calm the army down. The crowd dispersed before regrouping again near the port, the witnesses said, and the troops pulled back. The unrest in Sohar, Oman's main industrial center, was a rare outbreak of discontent in the normally calm Gulf state ruled by Sultan Qaboos bin Said for four decades, and follows a wave of pro-democracy protests across the Arab world. The sultan, trying to calm tensions, on Sunday promised 50,000 jobs, unemployment benefits of $390 a month and to study widening the power of a quasi-parliamentary advisory council.

In Sohar after the confrontation, traffic flowed freely into the port, which exports 160,000 barrels per day of refined oil products, despite the presence of around 150 protesters. Protesters had blocked the entrance to the port on Monday.Omani troops had been deployed in the city beforehand but until Tuesday had refrained from intervening to stop protests. At the nearby Globe Roundabout, center of the Sohar protests that have drawn up to 2,000 people, five armored vehicles watched the square but no protesters could be seen.As many as six people were killed in Sohar on Sunday when police opened fire on stone-throwing demonstrators after failing to disperse them with batons and tear gas. A doctor and nurses at a state hospital said six people died but the health minister put the toll at one.The U.S. State Department said on Monday, the same day Sohar protests spread to the capital Muscat, that Washington was encouraging restraint and dialogue in Oman.

MODEST REFORMS

Sultan Qaboos, who exercises absolute power in a country where political parties are banned, gave more independence to the public prosecutor on Tuesday and ordered the creation of an independent consumer protection watchdog to monitor prices. The steps were the latest in a series of modest moves by Oman and came after Sultan Qaboos reshuffled his cabinet on Saturday, a week after a small protest in the capital Muscat gave the first hint that Arab discontent could reach the state. We see the two royal decrees as part of the new reforms ... Next we want him to consider an elected government and a constitution change, said Zakaria al-Mharmi, an intellectual who has been a prominent face in Muscat protests.Mostly wealthy Gulf Arab countries have pledged billions of dollars in state benefits and some offered modest reforms to appease their populations following popular unrest that toppled the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt and is threatening Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's grip on power.

Protesters in Oman have stopped short of calling for a change of government, unlike in neighboring Yemen where protesters want the president to go and in fellow Gulf Arab state Bahrain where protesters want the prime minister sacked.Oman is a non-OPEC oil exporter which pumps around 850,000 bpd, and has strong military and political ties to Washington.Sultan Qaboos appoints the cabinet and in 1992 introduced an elected advisory Shura Council. Protesters have demanded the council be given legislative powers and on Sunday Qaboos ordered a committee to study increasing its authority.(Writing by Cynthia Johnston; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Thousands of Yemeni protesters demand Saleh goes By Mohammed Ghobari and Mohammed Mukhashaf – Tue Mar 1, 5:19 am ET

SANAA/ADEN (Reuters) – Tens of thousands of protesters flooded Yemen's streets Tuesday, dedicating a fresh Day of Rage to the 24 people killed in demonstrations demanding an end to the president's three-decade rule.President Ali Abdullah Saleh, a U.S. ally against al Qaeda's Yemen-based wing, has failed to quell two months of protests in a country where half its 23 million people own guns, 40 percent live on $2 a day or less and a third face chronic hunger.Protesters are also angry at widespread corruption. Yemeni university graduates struggle to get jobs without connections and youth unemployment is high.Yemen is also riven with regional strife, with Shi'ite rebels in the north and separatists in the south demanding fairer political participation.Saleh has been meeting with tribal and regional military leaders to rally support, but with oil and water resources drying up, his cash-strapped government is no longer able to pay off allies to keep the peace.Saleh offered talks to form a unity government Monday. But the opposition swiftly rebuffed the offer, saying it was standing with protesters demanding he step aside. In a meeting with religious leaders, also Monday, Saleh warned that those behind the protests were dividing the country. They would not be able to rule for even one week, he said, quoted by state media. Yemen would be divided ... into four pieces by those who are riding the wave of stupidity.

MOST VIOLENCE IN SOUTH

Most deaths since January were in the southern port city of Aden, where protesters and police have clashed regularly. Many complain that security forces have reacted more violently to protests in the south, which was once an independent state. With blood and soul we support you Aden, protesters shouted on the streets of capital Sanaa. Al Jazeera television showed protesters making V for victory signs while others wore white headbands with Leave written in red.Protesters in the last few days have chanted:No to dialogue, no to dialogue, your leaving is the only option.

Opposition to the 68-year old leader gained steam under students and activist leaders inspired by successful uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.Victory is coming and it is near, Hassan Zaid, an opposition leader, shouted to protesters in Sanaa. We have one goal and one demand and that is the quick end of the regime.A top religious leader in Taiz, 200 km (125 miles) south of Sanaa, said he would join around 10,000 protesters who have been camped out in a central square for weeks.

DOCTOR KIDNAPPED, UNREST HIGH

Tribesmen kidnapped an Uzbek doctor working in the province of Shabwa, an area of central Yemen where both separatists and al Qaeda militants are active, late Monday.
Abdulhamid Jun was taken to the neighboring southern Abyan province, where an air strike against al Qaeda suspects in December 2009 killed dozens of people in the town of al-Maajala. They took him to pressure the government to hold the people behind the air strike accountable, a tribesman in Shabwa told Reuters. The people are upset with the government for not dealing with this issue.Jun was taken to a mountainous part of Abyan, where al Qaeda operatives are believed to be hiding and where several air raids have been conducted against suspected militant bases.Yemen security forces have also come under attack in recent days. Two soldiers and an intelligence officer have been killed and at least 11 soldiers wounded. Four inmates escaped from a prison riot in the south that killed one prisoner.(Writing by Erika Solomon; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Palestinians try to create Facebook revolution By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH and IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press - MAR 1,11

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – The mass demonstrations sweeping the Middle East are touching the Palestinian territories, where West Bank and Gaza Strip activists are trying to organize their own Facebook revolutions. The Palestinian activists are inspired by the calls for democracy that toppled autocratic leaders in Egypt and Tunisia and threaten longtime rulers in Libya and Bahrain. In recent weeks, activists using Facebook have brought hundreds of people onto streets of the West Bank, waving Palestinian flags and calling for change. Smaller gatherings have taken place in Gaza. The protesters hope to stage a massive demonstration in both areas on March 15.

Whether they can succeed is far from certain because of the unique situation of the Palestinians. In contrast to countries where crowds have rallied against a single, despised leader, the Palestinians face a series of intertwined problems, making it harder to rally around a common cause.Palestinians seek an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza, areas wedged on different sides of Israel and ruled by rival governments. The Western-backed Palestinian Authority governs in the West Bank, where Israel's military still retains overall control. The militant Islamic group Hamas has ruled Gaza since 2007.The Palestinian split has crippled efforts to negotiate an independent state from Israel. Repeated efforts to reconcile, including a Palestinian Authority proposal to hold new elections, have foundered. The Facebook activists have divisions of their own. Some want the rival Palestinian governments to reconcile. Others demand they resign. Still others want to demonstrate against Israel's occupation.Activist Hasan Farahat, 22, said there was enough common ground. Everybody is sick of the situation. We want work, we want the right to speak freely. We want freedom, he said. The governments see even the smallest demonstrations as a challenge to their rule.On Monday, Hamas moved swiftly to break up a small demonstration in Gaza City where people called for Palestinian reconciliation. Hamas police arrested a protest organizer, seizing a tape from a German TV crew showing a security official slapping the man.

In previous protest attempts, Hamas security arrested activists and seized their phones and computers, according to the Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights. The West Bank has seen about a dozen demonstrations, including two in Ramallah, where some 2,000 Palestinians demanded reconciliation. Others urged leaders to revoke interim peace agreements with Israel.Palestinian Authority security forces initially broke up protests by beating participants. Now, organizers are threatened and sometimes arrested, they said.Daraghmeh and Associated Press writer Diaa Hadid reported from Ramallah.

Chavez says he won't condemn Libya's Gadhafi By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER, Associated Press – Tue Mar 1, 2:10 am ET

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Monday that he won't condemn Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and he warned that the United States is preparing an invasion of the North African country to seize control of its oil reserves. We must be prudent. We know what our political line is: We don't support invasions, or massacres, or anything like that no matter who does it. A campaign of lies is being spun together regarding Libya, said Chavez, in a televised speech to a crowd of graduates who had just received diplomas from state universities.I'm not going to condemn him (Gadhafi), he said. I'd be a coward to condemn someone who has been my friend. The U.S. government is behind the campaign to remove Gadhafi, he added. The United States has already said it's ready to invade Libya, don't you see? And almost all the countries of Europe are condemning Libya ... What do they want. They are rubbing their hands together. Oil is what's important to them, he said.

Chavez noted that numerous countries have condemned Gadhafi for cracking down on Libyans who have risen up against him.Maybe they have information that we don't have, he said.Chavez slammed the United States for moving naval and air forces closer to Libya amid active international discussions about imposing a no-fly zone over the country. The U.S. has a regular military presence in the Mediterranean Sea, two aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf area and a wide range of surveillance equipment available for use in the region. Without specific information about what assets were being moved and where, it was impossible to tell whether the U.S. moves were intended as a military threat or were simply a symbolic show of force.A flight ban seemed unlikely in the short term. Senior U.S. officials said the issue was not discussed during Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country would have to support such a move if the U.S. and its allies wanted authorization from the U.N. Security Council. Lavrov dismissed the idea in public remarks.Chavez and Gadhafi, united in their mutual antagonism toward Washington, have forged close ties.

Venezuela's opposition has strongly criticized Chavez for his close relationship to Gadhafi. Earlier on Monday, a coalition of opposition parties warned that Chavez's failure to take a stand against Gadhafi's violent crackdown is smearing Venezuela's reputation.By distancing himself from the numerous nations that condemn the criminal actions of the Libyan leader, Chavez makes our country out to be his defender and irresponsibly puts us alongside governments rejected by the international community, the coalition said in a statement.Opposition politician Gustavo Azocar demanded that Chavez ask Gadhafi to return a replica of a sword that once belonged to 19th-century independence hero Simon Bolivar.Azocar said in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press on Monday that Venezuela's foreign minister, Nicolas Maduro, should explain why the government gave the sword of the Liberator, Simon Bolivar, to an assassin like Gadhafi.Chavez gave the sword to Gadhafi last year. The self-proclaimed socialist has scoffed at suggestions by his adversaries that protests similar to those sweeping the Middle East could occur in Venezuela.Venezuela and Libya are both major oil exporters.Associated Press writer Fabiola Sanchez in Caracas contributed to this report.

Pakistan hikes oil prices, fueling anger By ZARAR KHAN, Associated Press - MAR 1,11

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan hiked oil prices by 9.9 percent Tuesday, a move that threatens the stability of the fragile, U.S.-allied civilian government at a time of economic turmoil in the impoverished country.Jawad Nasim, a spokesman for the country's oil regulator, said the decision was forced by international oil market price increases — spurred by uprisings in Libya and other North African and the Middle Eastern countries. The price of a gallon of gas went from roughly $3.28 per gallon (72.96 rupees per liter) to $3.59 per gallon (80.19 rupees per liter.)But the increase drew criticism from opposition parties and even some members of Pakistan's governing coalition, and a group representing public transportation workers in Karachi, the country's largest city, threatened to go on strike.Several lawmakers from both sides also walked out of the National Assembly Tuesday to protest the price hike. Siddiqul Farooq, a spokesman for the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N party, said the government should cut its budget instead of transferring the burden to already overburdened masses.

Haider Abbas Rizvi, a senior member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, which is part of the governing coalition, said the price increase was unacceptable considering Pakistanis are already struggling with double-digit inflation and chronic power shortages. The MQM briefly left the governing coalition in January when the government tried to increase fuel prices, and Rizvi hinted that the party may again defect to the opposition unless the ruling Pakistan People's Party reverses its decision in three days. The ruling party backed off on that earlier increase to keep the MQM on board and save its majority in parliament, upsetting the United States and international lenders whose billions are keeping Pakistan's economy afloat. Washington wants Pakistan to stay politically stable, but also has pushed it to make tough economic decisions, including raising fuel prices, in the interest of the country's long-term financial health. It was not immediately clear if the People's Party could afford to avoid another price hike this time.Mohammad Sohail, an economic analyst, estimated the government had lost out on 17 billion rupees ($200 million) by failing to increase gasoline prices since November. Even the 9.9 percent increase on gasoline and other petroleum products wasn't enough to cover losses, he said.Karachi Transport Union, an association of bus owners, truckers, taxi drivers and others involved in the city's public transport, planned to go on strike on Thursday until the government reversed its decision, according to Syed Mahmood Afridi, secretary-general of the group.Karachi is the country's most populous city, with over 16 million people, and its main economic hub. A lengthy public strike there could further hobble the Pakistani industry.Pakistan has a population of more than 180 million. Average income per capita is less than $3,000, so a rise in petroleum prices can make a big dent in a citizen's pocketbook.

The International Monetary Fund has provided Pakistan with more than $7 billion in loans to salvage its economy, but it has demanded the government take at times difficult steps to reform its economy. Those proposed economic reforms, notably a revised general sales tax, are unpopular. The ruling party has tried to pursue a policy of reconciliation in hopes of getting all parties on board for economic changes, but it has had little luck so far, and its political opponents seem to sense its weakness.Last week, the Pakistan Muslim League-N pushed the People's Party out of its coalition in Punjab, the country's most populous and wealthiest province. The PML-N is in charge of the government in the province but in the opposition on the federal level.Officials with the People's Party could not immediately be reached Tuesday. Also Tuesday, the bullet-riddled bodies of four tribesmen slain by suspected Taliban fighters for allegedly acting as U.S. spies were found in a northwest Pakistani tribal region, Pakistani intelligence officials and a resident said. The bodies were found along a road near the Hamzani area of North Waziristan, a tribal region largely under the control of militant groups engaged in fighting U.S. and NATO forces across the border in Afghanistan. A note attached to the bodies accused them of acting as U.S. spies. Local tribesman Syed Khan said he'd seen the bodies early Tuesday along a road near his home. Two intelligence officials confirmed the account on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters on the record.Taliban fighters have slain numerous tribesmen in North Waziristan whom they suspected of spying for the U.S., including passing along information that helps American missile strikes against militant targets.Associated Press writers Rasool Dawar in Peshawar, Asif Shahzad in Islamabad and Ashraf Khan in Karachi contributed to this report.

Lukewarm response to Barroso-Van-Rompuy economic plan
LEIGH PHILLIPS 28.02.2011 @ 19:34 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - New proposals on joint economic governance put forward by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU Council chief Herman Van Rompuy on Monday (28 February) have failed to overcome resistance from some member states. Monday's debate in Brussels was just a step forward, but things for some are still not satisfactory. There was something like a wait-and-see attitude a diplomat from one northern European country said. There definitely wasn't a breakthrough, but it also wasn't a flop either. The Barroso-Van-Rompuy blueprint is designed to overcome resistance to an earlier Franco-German Competitiveness Pact by tweaking some of its proposals. Under the Barroso-Van-Rompuy version, enforcement of competitiveness will be overseen by the European Commission rather than the member states themselves. The Barroso-Van-Rompuy plan does contain a requirement that German-style debt brakes be implemented across the eurozone, however. Resistance to this element comes from those who do not want to open the Pandora's Box of constitutional amendments this could entail.Opposition to the Franco-German pact also revolved around the proposal that countries that maintain inflation-indexed wage systems abandon this practice. Belgium and Luxembourg in particular were resistant. Under a compromise in the new rules, these systems can remain, but in such circumstances governments would be required to develop other ways to reduce wages. A monitoring system would also be introduced, keeping an eye on wage and productivity levels in the different states and a mechanism for their reduction should they become a threat to competitiveness.Even after the presentation of the new compromise, the issue of wage moderation remains tricky according to another EU diplomat.

The key is that the precise policy mix [on wages] remains in the realm of the member states, the source said, meaning that it would be up to the national capital how to implement the wider goal of lower wages rather than an EU-level constructed mechanism. The proposals, according to EU sources, also include a system for monitoring the cost of state pension systems, a mechanism that could result in retirement age increases. One diplomat said that the purpose of Monday's meeting of high-level bureaucrats, or sherpas was only intended for Mr Van Rompuy and Mr Barroso to get a first reaction to their suggestions. The proposals will now be re-drafted ... It's already an old document, the contact added.

Brussels flexible on bail-outs

In separate developments on Monday, EU economic affairs chief Olli Rehn said following the election of a new government in Ireland there may be an option to re-negotiate the interest rate the government is to pay on the recent EU-IMF bail-out.
I expect this issue of pricing policy will be looked at from the comprehensive strategy of the European Union. We expect that this issue will be looked at from the overall European perspective of safe-guarding financial stability in the euro area and ensuring debt-sustainability of all its members, he said. His spokesman, Amadeu Altafaj, clarified to EUobserver that this flexibility also covers the interest rate paid by fellow bailed-out state Greece. The pricing of the aid is open. Any way we can reinforce Ireland's fiscal sustainability makes sense. This goes for Greece as well, taking into account equal treatment for all member states, he explained. He said however that eurozone member states, including Germany, and not the commission, will have the final say: There is a margin for discussions, but it is up to eurozone member states themselves on the question of interest rates, and provided the countries continue to fulfill existing conditions.

Brussels to the left: You signed up to austerity too

As key figures on the left in Europe, including within the commission itself, have begun to issue their misgivings over the path of austerity chosen by the EU as a response to the crisis, the commission warned social democrats that throughout the crisis, they have also backed this process.Last week, Greece's EU commissioner, Maria Damanaki, publicly distanced herself from EU austerity, saying it is leading to social degradation. Former commission president Jacques Delors, a French Socialist, has also called the commission's recent Annual Growth Survey, a first step in the EU's new system of oversight of and intervention in national budgets, as The most reactionary document ever produced by the commission.Mark Gray, a spokesman for commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, told EUobserver that his employer did not see Ms Damanaki's comments: as quite so outlandish as they've been reported. It's her personal opinion, not that of the college. Commissioners are entitled to their views. But they unanimously signed up to this, he added. At the same time, we don't see it that way. We don't see any contradiction between fiscal consolidation and creating growth and jobs.I have no idea why Delors is saying this, he went on.The Annual Growth Survey was unanimously approved by all commissioners. It was also been unanimously endorsed by the European Council, representing governments of all political stripes around Europe.

EARTH WORSHIP

DEUTERONOMY 17:3-4
3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:

2 KINGS 23:5
5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

EU ministers blow cold on tougher energy efficiency targets
ANDREW WILLIS Today MAR 1,11 @ 09:26 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – EU energy ministers faced criticism on Monday (28 February) over a decision to ease up on tougher EU energy efficiency targets, even as turmoil in Libya kept oil prices hovering around the $100-a-barrel mark. Speaking at a hearing in the European Parliament on the same day, EU climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard added to pressure saying an EU pledge to cut carbon emissions by 20 percent over the next decade lacked sufficient ambition.Instead a 25 percent cut, based on 1990 levels, was needed if the EU was to meet a longer-term 2050 goal in a cost-effective manner, said the Danish politician, pre-empting the main message of the commission's 2050 roadmap to be published next week. A draft of the text, seen by this website, suggests the extra five percent in emissions savings can be achieved if EU member states simply comply with a non-binding EU pledge to boost energy efficiency by 20 percent over the next decade. But EU energy ministers showed little taste for tougher rules in this area on Monday, despite a series of reports showing member states are behind schedule. The setting of any additional targets is not justified at present, said the meeting's final conclusions. The implementation of the EU energy efficiency target will be reviewed by 2013 and further measures considered if necessary.Green MEPs slammed the decision not to push harder right away. Energy ministers clearly have their heads in the sand as regards the looming oil crisis, said the group's energy spokesman Claude Turmes.

Friends of the Earth energy campaigner Brook Riley was equally critical. National figures already make it clear that the EU will not meet the 2020 energy efficiency target. This waiting game is condemning Europeans to pay higher energy bills.EU national governments have been reluctant to accept binding EU energy efficiency targets however until a common methodology to measure gains in efficiency is agreed.
Over lunch ministers discussed the rising oil prices in recent days due to fighting in Libya, adopting a list of sanctions against the the country's autocratic leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi who has ruled the north African state for over 40 years. Oil and gas exports were left off the list however, a decision supported by EU energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger. There is reason to believe most of the oil and gas fields are no longer under Gaddafi's control, Mr Oettinger told journalists. Instead we have provisional (regional) leaders who have taken control … We would be punishing the wrong people.Amid strong lobbying from international energy firms ahead of next week's publication by the commission, EU energy ministers also made reference to the importance of tapping EU supplies of shale gas.A recent report, drawn up by consultants McKinsey at the behest of a coalition of gas producers including Gazprom, Centrica and Qatar Petroleum, said Europe's largely undeveloped shale gas resources could meet the continent's needs for 30 years based on current demand. The advent of new extraction technologies has seen shale gas heralded as the next big thing in the US, but environmental groups warn that while gas is considerably cleaner than coal or oil, it is still no substitute for renewable energies.Heavy dependency on gas and carbon capture and storage (CCS) at the expense of almost any other technology, as this report seems to suggest, is not a viable alternative, said the European Climate Foundation in a statement.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Rabbi to Netanyahu: We Are Not the Enemy
by Maayana Miskin MAR 1,11

Rabbi Chaim Druckman, a leading figure in the religious-Zionist world, has voiced his disapproval of police and army violence at Gilad Farm in Samaria. He sent a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu deploring the government's approach to the issue. If homes must be demolished, it should be done with coordination and dialogue, not as a battle. Residents of Judea and Samaria are not the enemy, he said.
Rabbi Druckman noted that during the eviction at Gilad Farm police made no effort to respect residents' religious views by assigning female officers to deal with women in cases where physical contact was used. Even during the expulsion from Gush Katif and in Amona, security forces made an effort to avoid this type of harsh blow to the sensitivities and religious modesty of local residents, he said.In response, Natan Eshel of the Prime Minister's Office told Rabbi Druckman's aide, Efraim Meir, that Netanyahu held a meeting Monday to discuss the violence at Gilad Farm. Netanyahu met with Defense Minister Ehud Barak and expressed the severity in which he views the use of pneumatic bullets and the insensitivity to religious practice.(Israel National News.com)

US Jews Bring Purim Cheer to IDF Soldiers
by Maayana Miskin MAR 1,11

As the holiday of Purim approaches, the Zionist Organization of America's Brooklyn branch is gearing up to bring Purim cheer to Israel for the eleventh year. The group plans to distribute thousands of mishloach manot packages to IDF soldiers.Last year the group sent almost 6,000 gift packages to soldiers, and another 500 to children in southern Israel. This year's gift packages for soldiers will include something new: special water backpacks known in Israel as shlukerim that help keep water cool in the field while giving soldiers added mobility. In addition, ZOA will be hosting a free concert for soldiers. The concert is to take place in the Samaria city of Ariel, which was the target of a cultural boycott earlier in the year.We come to thank the IDF soldiers because they are guarding the country not only for the country itself, which is in itself a tremendous achievement, but also for Jews all over the world, explained project organizer Rubin Margules, head of the Brooklyn branch of ZOA.This year, as before, many ZOA members will be delivering the gifts in person. The IDF's Sar-El program plans to provide transport, bringing the volunteers and their gifts to IDF bases. The volunteers will also meet with political leaders, and will visit Israeli towns in Judea and Samaria.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Netanyahu Asked to Choose - Barak, or Likud
by Maayana Miskin MAR 1,11

Fallout over Monday's violence against residents of the Gilad Farm in Samaria continued Tuesday. A member of the Likud Central Committee warned Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that he is at risk of losing support from his own party. In a letter to Likud MKs, committee member Meir Goldmintz said, Today, Defense Minister Ehud Barak crossed an unthinkable red line: firing rubber bullets at Jews. This is a significant escalation in the war against settlers that he began when he was appointed to the position. The serious nature of this act aside, he is doing this in our name, in the name of the Likud government. The time has come to put an end to this! Barak leads a party with just five seats that has been given an unprecedented four ministries, even though Netanyahu would maintain a majority coalition without Barak, Goldmintz pointed out. We cannot continue this way! he said.Tell the Prime Minister: Choose either Barak, or us. We will not allow the Likud government to be used by Barak as his base from which to attack settlers, he said in an appeal to the MKs.

Soldier Announces Plans to Go AWOL
One of the homes destroyed in Gilad Farm belonged to the family of Shimon Weizman, a soldier in the IDF. Weizman held a news conference Monday evening and announced that he will not be returning to duty.I fought to enlist in the IDF, to defend the people of Israel, to devote myself to the country, he said. During my service, the IDF sent forces to destroy my home and shoot my friends. Until the ruins are rebuilt, I do not plan to return to the army.Weizman, who serves in the Kfir anti-terror brigade, could face prison time for his refusal to return. An IDF spokesman said in response, The IDF does not choose its missions. Soldiers are expected not to mix political issues with IDF service. On Monday night, hundreds gathered to protest the violence, demonstrating at several locations in Jerusalem.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Rivers rise in Ohio, but no more rain forecast
By JOHN SEEWER, Associated Press - MAR 1,11

FINDLAY, Ohio – A town in northwest Ohio was under water Tuesday morning as rivers continued to rise around the state and in parts of the Midwest and New York, a day after storms and tornadoes damaged buildings and homes in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. The main street in the northwest Ohio city of Findlay was under three feet of water Tuesday morning, and flooding from an ice-jammed creek forced about 200people from their homes in a western New York hamlet located where the waterway flows into Lake Erie.Rivers were rising but no rain was forecast for those areas on Tuesday.Three tornadoes touched down in Indiana on Monday. A tornado destroyed three homes in Kentucky's Henry County, northeast of Louisville. A tornado tore its way across a 2.4-mile path in Ohio's Fairfield County, east of Columbus, on Monday. It destroyed barns and a cinder block grain silo, ripped the roof off a modular home, tossed around metal grain bins and uprooted trees. And six people were treated at a hospital in Maryville, Ill., where the storm tore off part of the roof at a church.

In New York, residents were evacuated Monday as the Cattaraugus Creek flooded the lakeshore community of Sunset Bay, a cluster of seasonal and year-round homes in the town of Hanover, 27 miles southwest of Buffalo. Some of those displaced stayed at a shelter set up at a local church. The creek is flood-prone where it empties into the lake, but officials said this week's flooding is the worst in several years.A mix of melting snow and heavy rain threatened flooding in all 88 of Ohio's counties, the National Weather Service said. Findlay's residents know all too well what to do when faced with the threat of high waters.Warren Krout lost just about everything inside his pawn shop when floodwaters swamped his store nearly four years ago. With the river rising again, he had help this time.University of Findlay football players lugged mattresses, an air hockey table and reclining chairs to the second floor of Krout's store. Stack it as tight as you possibly can, he told the young men. What they couldn't carry was put up on concrete blocks or left to chance. Some of this stuff is just going to have to go down the river, Krout said Monday.Sandbags were stacked throughout downtown as forecasts called for the Blanchard River to rise 6.5 feet above flood level. That's just a foot lower than the catastrophic August 2007 flood that swamped the town, 45 miles south of Toledo, and caused millions of dollars in damage.

The Blanchard River in Findlay was more than 5 feet above what's considered flood level Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service expected the river to crest later in the day at 6 feet above the flood stage.Hancock County emergency director Garry Valentine said 13 people were rescued from their homes and taken to an emergency shelter Monday night. We anticipate a flood every time it rains, Krout said.
Parts of Ohio and Indiana received up to 3 inches of rain and some hail overnight Sunday. Crews in boats rescued nearly 30 people, including a group trapped in a mobile home park in western Ohio, said Mike Robbins, Mercer County's emergency management director.Elsewhere, a tornado hit Celestine, Ind., a town of about 250, and damaged two homes and a double-wide trailer, the weather service said. A tornado that touched down near the small town of Ingalls, northeast of Indianapolis, damaged two homes, barns and a trailer.Inside Krout's store Monday, the football players lifted display cases on to stacks of concrete blocks.I'm sweating like I'm coming out of a workout, said Richard Sumlin, a third-year student who helped pile sandbags during the last big flood in 2008.City leaders said some houses will be in danger and drivers will find it difficult to cross town if floodwaters reach the levels predicted. If the predictions hold true, we'll be OK, said appliance store owner Jack Bindel. But another foot could make a big difference.Photos of past floods, including the 2007 deluge that ruined everything in his basement, decorate the wall behind his desk.People who live here understand it's going to flood,Bindel said.

Severe storms hit the mid-Atlantic and South
By Wendell Marsh – Mon Feb 28, 4:05 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- A severe weather front was bringing high winds, lightning, hail, flooding and a few tornadoes to the Southeast and mid-Atlantic on Monday, forecasters said. The storm ran through the Mississippi and Ohio valleys overnight, causing flooding that will continue to swell Midwestern waterways throughout the week as the one to three inches of heavy rain meets with quickly melting snow, according to accuweather.com.The main threat to lives and property from this severe weather outbreak will be from flash flooding and straight-line wind gusts, AccuWeather's senior Meteorologist Sosnowski said on the website.Although there are only a few tornadoes predicted, Sosnowski warned that these winds can still damage roofs, break windows, down trees and power lines and pose danger to aircraft attempting to land or take off.The National Weather Service said severe storms that produced several tornadoes and well over 100 reports of damaging winds and hail across the Central U.S. on Sunday were moving east. That meant moderate risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of Tennessee, northern Alabama and Georgia and far western North Carolina, the Service said on its site.

Three tornadoes, accompanied by heavy wind and rain, lashed the St. Louis metropolitan area late Sunday, leaving thousands without power, authorities said Monday. The National Weather Service said winds reached 70 mph in the city at around midnight. The storm initially knocked out power to about 43,000 customers and by late morning on Monday 22,000 homes were still without electric service, power officials said. Police closed several streets in the area due to downed utility poles and dangling power lines.Northern Mississippi was expected to be under a tornado watch until late Monday afternoon. The Delta region of the state along the Mississippi River could get golf ball- size hail, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Schools in Benton and Montgomery Counties in Tennessee opened a couple of hours late on Monday morning because the storm was expected to hit during the morning commute.
The system is coming as a cold front moves through the state. While it was 70 degrees early on Monday, temperatures are expected to get down to the low 30s at night. Temperatures already have dropped 20 degrees or more in Middle Tennessee. The Nashville office of the National Weather Service issued tornado and flash flood warnings.AccuWeather said thunderstorms could reach as far north as New York and southern New England.(Additional Reporting by Leigh Coleman in Biloxi and Timothy Ghianni in Nashville, and Bruce Olson in St. Louis; Editing by Jerry Norton and Greg McCune)

DOCTOR DOCTORIAN FROM ANGEL OF GOD
