In the wake of the recent incident on board a ship full of anti-Israeli activists in the Mediterranean, it is hard to think of a more unpopular cause to champion. In an ideal world, the assault by Israeli commandos on the Mavi Marmara would not have ended up with nine dead and a score wounded. In an ideal world, the soldiers would have been peacefully welcomed on to the ship. In an ideal world, no state, let alone a recent ally of Israel such as Turkey, would have sponsored and organized a flotilla whose sole purpose was to create an impossible situation for Israel: making it choose between giving up its security policy and the naval blockade, or risking the wrath of the world.In our dealings with Israel, we must blow away the red mists of anger that too often cloud our judgment. A reasonable and balanced approach should encapsulate the following realities: first, the state of Israel was created by a decision of the UN. Its legitimacy, therefore, should not be in question. Israel is a nation with deeply rooted democratic institutions. It is a dynamic and open society that has repeatedly excelled in culture, science and technology.Second, owing to its roots, history, and values, Israel is a fully fledged Western nation. Indeed, it is a normal Western nation, but one confronted by abnormal circumstances.Uniquely in the West, it is the only democracy whose very existence has been questioned since its inception. In the first instance, it was attacked by its neighbors using the conventional weapons of war. Then it faced terrorism culminating in wave after wave of suicide attacks. Now, at the behest of radical Islamists and their sympathizers, it faces a campaign of delegitimisation through international law and diplomacy.

Sixty-two years after its creation, Israel is still fighting for its very survival. Punished with missiles raining from north and south, threatened with destruction by an Iran aiming to acquire nuclear weapons and pressed upon by friend and foe, Israel, it seems, is never to have a moment’s peace.For years, the focus of Western attention has understandably been on the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. But if Israel is in danger today and the whole region is slipping towards a worryingly problematic future, it is not due to the lack of understanding between the parties on how to solve this conflict. The parameters of any prospective peace agreement are clear, however difficult it may seem for the two sides to make the final push for a settlement.

Radical Islamism is the real threat
The real threats to regional stability, however, are to be found in the rise of a radical Islamism which sees Israel’s destruction as the fulfillment of its religious destiny and, simultaneously in the case of Iran, as an expression of its ambitions for regional hegemony. Both phenomena are threats that affect not only Israel, but also the wider West and the world at large.The core of the problem lies in the ambiguous and often erroneous manner in which too many Western countries are now reacting to this situation. It is easy to blame Israel for all the evils in the Middle East. Some even act and talk as if a new understanding with the Muslim world could be achieved if only we were prepared to sacrifice the Jewish state on the altar. This would be folly.Israel is our first line of defense in a turbulent region that is constantly at risk of descending into chaos; a region vital to our energy security owing to our overdependence on Middle Eastern oil; a region that forms the front line in the fight against extremism. If Israel goes down, we all go down. To defend Israel’s right to exist in peace, within secure borders, requires a degree of moral and strategic clarity that too often seems to have disappeared in Europe. The United States shows worrying signs of heading in the same direction.The West is going through a period of confusion over the shape of the world’s future. To a great extent, this confusion is caused by a kind of masochistic self-doubt over our own identity; by the rule of political correctness; by a multiculturalism that forces us to our knees before others; and by a secularism which, irony of ironies, blinds us even when we are confronted by jihadis promoting the most fanatical incarnation of their faith. To abandon Israel to its fate, at this moment of all moments, would merely serve to illustrate how far we have sunk and how inexorable our decline now appears.

This cannot be allowed to happen. Motivated by the need to rebuild our own Western values, expressing deep concern about the wave of aggression against Israel, and mindful that Israel’s strength is our strength and Israel’s weakness is our weakness, I have decided to promote a new Friends of Israel initiative with the help of some prominent people, including David Trimble, Andrew Roberts, John Bolton, Alejandro Toledo (the former President of Peru), Marcello Pera (philosopher and former President of the Italian Senate), Fiamma Nirenstein (the Italian author and politician), the financier Robert Agostinelli and the Catholic intellectual George Weigel.It is not our intention to defend any specific policy or any particular Israeli government. The sponsors of this initiative are certain to disagree at times with decisions taken by Jerusalem. We are democrats, and we believe in diversity.
What binds us, however, is our unyielding support for Israel’s right to exist and to defend itself. For Western countries to side with those who question Israel’s legitimacy, for them to play games in international bodies with Israel’s vital security issues, for them to appease those who oppose Western values rather than robustly to stand up in defense of those values, is not only a grave moral mistake, but a strategic error of the first magnitude.Israel is a fundamental part of the West. The West is what it is thanks to its Judeo-Christian roots. If the Jewish element of those roots is upturned and Israel is lost, then we are lost too. We've been based on the Bretton Woods institutions of 1945, when our American friends were the only superpower, Sarkozy said.My question is: Are we still in 1945? The answer here is,no,he said.While the Bretton Woods conference took place in 1944, the International Monetary Fund was officially established a year later, when the 29 countries that had participated signed its Articles of Agreement.Sarkozy said the United Nations has too many members to reach consensus on how to reform the global financial system, while the G8, which includes the world's eight wealthiest nations, pays too little attention to developing countries.Who can seriously address the big problems of the world without asking the opinions of China, India, Brazil, Mexico? Even the use of two currencies as strong as the euro and dollar will not insure the world against problems,Medvedev said.John Lipsky, the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, supported broadening the list of reserve currencies.Making, for example, the ruble an international reserve currency implies lots of strengthening of the institutions, deepening of the markets. It's a very good and plausible goal,Lipsky told The Associated Press.France, Germany and Italy have been positioning themselves as Russia's main partners in Europe, winning preferential energy deals in the process.

Russia and France signed nearly a dozen deals on the sidelines of the forum, on issues ranging from natural gas to space. Among them was a deal for France's GdF Suez to join Russia's Nord Stream gas pipeline project, of which the French company will now own 9 percent.But the increased cooperation has worried some of France's NATO allies, such as Poland and the Baltic states. France wants to sign a deal with Russia that calls for building four French Mistral-class warships — designed for amphibious assault — in Russian shipyards.Sarkozy said the Cold War was over and the European Union and Russia should work closer together. In the 1960's, the elite media invented second-wave feminism as part of the elite agenda to dismantle civilization and create a New World Order.Since writing these words last week, I have discovered that before she became a feminist leader, Gloria Steinem worked for the CIA spying on Marxist students in Europe and disrupting their meetings. She became a media darling due to her CIA connections. MS Magazine, which she edited for many years was indirectly funded by the CIA.Steinem has tried to suppress this information, unearthed in the 1970's by a radical feminist group called Red Stockings.In 1979, Steinem and her powerful CIA-connected friends, Katharine Graham of the Washington Post and Ford Foundation President Franklin Thomas prevented Random House from publishing it in Feminist Revolution.Nevertheless the story appeared in the Village Voice on May 21, 1979.Steinem has always pretended that she had been a student radical.When I was in college, it was the McCarthy era, she told Susan Mitchell in 1997, and that made me a Marxist.(Icons, Saints and Divas: Intimate Conversations with Women who Changed the World 1997. p 130) Her bio-blurb in June 1973 MS. Magazine states: Gloria Steinem has been a freelance writer all her professional life. Ms magazine is her first full-time salaried job.Not true. Raised in an impoverished, dysfunctional family in Toledo Ohio, Steinem somehow managed to attend elite Smith College, Betty Friedan's alma mater. After graduating in 1955, Steinem received a Chester Bowles Student Fellowship to study in India. Curiously, an Internet search reveals that this fellowship has no existence apart from Gloria Steinem. No one else has received it.

In 1958, Steinem was recruited by CIA's Cord Meyers to direct an informal group of activists called the Independent Research Service.This was part of Meyer's Congress for Cultural Freedom,which created magazines like Encounter and Partisan Review to promote a left-liberal chic to oppose Marxism. Steinem, attended Communist-sponsored youth festivals in Europe, published a newspaper, reported on other participants, and helped to provoke riots.One of Steinem's CIA colleagues was Clay Felker. In the early 1960's, he became an editor at Esquire and published articles by Steinem which established her as a leading voice for women's lib. In 1968, as publisher of New York Magazine, he hired her as a contributing editor, and then editor of Ms. Magazine in 1971. Warner Communications put up almost all the money although it only took 25% of the stock. Ms. Magazine's first publisher was Elizabeth Forsling Harris, a CIA-connected PR executive who planned John Kennedy's Dallas motorcade route. Despite its anti establishment image, MS magazine attracted advertising from the cream of corporate America. It published ads for ITT at the same time as women political prisoners in Chile were being tortured by Pinochet, after a coup inspired by the US conglomerate and the CIA.Steinem's personal relationships also belie her anti establishment pretensions. She had a nine-year relationship with Stanley Pottinger, a Nixon-Ford assistant attorney general, credited with stalling FBI investigations into the assassinations of Martin Luther King, and the ex-Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Latelier. Our main misconception about the CIA is that it serves US interests. In fact, it has always been the instrument of a dynastic international banking and oil elite (Rothschild, Rockefeller, Morgan) coordinated by the Royal Institute for Internal Affairs in London and their US branch, the Council for Foreign Relations. It was established and peopled by blue bloods from the New York banking establishment and graduates of Yale University's secret pagan Skull and Bones society. Our current President, his father and grandfather fit this profile.The agenda of this international cabal is to degrade the institutions and values of the United States in order to integrate it into a global state that it will direct through the United Nations. In its 1947 Founding Charter, the CIA is prohibited from engaging in domestic activities. However this has never stopped it from waging a psychological war on the American people. The domestic counterpart of the Congress for Cultural Freedom was the American Committee for Cultural Freedom.Using foundations as conduits, the CIA controlled intellectual discourse in the 1950's and 1960's, and I believe continues to do so today. In The Cultural Cold War,Francis Stonor Saunders estimates that a thousand books were produced under the imprint of a variety of commercial and university presses, with covert subsidies.The CIA's Project Mockingbird involved the direct infiltration of the corporate media, a process that often included direct takeover of major news outlets. By the early 1950's, writes Deborah Davis, in her book Katherine the Great, the CIA owned respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, CBS and other communication vehicles, plus stringers, four to six hundred in all.In 1982 the CIA admitted that reporters on the CIA payroll have acted as case officers to agents in the field. Philip Graham, publisher of the Washington Post, who ran the operation until his suicide in 1963, boasted that you could get a journalist cheaper than a good call girl, for a couple of hundred dollars a month.I was born in 1949. Idealists in my parent's generation were disillusioned when the Communist dream of universal brotherhood turned out to be a shill for a brutal despotism. My own generation may discover that our best instincts have also been manipulated and exploited. There is evidence that the 60's drug counter culture, the civil rights movement, and anti-war movement, like feminism, were CIA directed. For example, the CIA has admitted setting up the (National Student Association as a front in 1947 http://www.cia-on-campus.org/nsa/nsa2.html). In the early 1950's the NSA opposed the attempts of the House Un American Activities Committee to root out Communist spies. According to Phil Agee Jr., NSA officers participated in the activities of SNCC, the militant civil rights group, and Students for a Democratic Society, a radical peace group.

According to Mark Riebling, the CIA also may have used Timothy Leary. Certainly the agency distributed LSD to Leary and other opinion makers in the 1960s. Leary made a generation of Americans turn away from active participation in society and seek fulfillment within.In another example of the CIA's use of drugs to interfere in domestic politics, Gary Webb describes how in the 1980's, the CIA flooded Black ghettos with cocaine.I won't attempt to analyze the CIA's motivation except to suggest what they have in common: They demoralized, alienated and divided Americans. The elite operates by fostering division and conflict in the world. Thus, we don't realize who the real enemy is. For the same reason, the CIA and elite foundations also fund the diversity and multicultural movements.Feminism has done the most damage. There is no more fundamental yet delicate relationship in society than male and female. On it depends the family, the red blood cell of society. Nobody with the interests of society at heart would try to divide men and women. Yet the lie that men have exploited women has become the official orthodoxy.Man loves woman. His first instinct is to nurture (husband) and see her thrive. When a woman is happy, she is beautiful. Sure, some men are abusive. But the vast majority have supported and guided their families for millennium.Feminists relentlessly advance the idea that our inherent male and female characteristics, crucial to our development as human beings, are mere stereotypes.This is a vicious calumny on all heterosexuals, 95% of the population. Talk about hate! Yet it is taught to children in elementary schools! It is echoed in the media. Lesbians like Rosie O'Donnell are advanced as role models.

All of this is calculated to create personal confusion and sow chaos among heterosexuals. As a result, millions of American males are emasculated and divorced from their relationship to family (the world and the future.) The American woman has been hoodwinked into investing herself in a mundane career instead of the timeless love of her husband and children. Many women have become temperamentally unfit to be wives and mothers. People, who are isolated and alone, stunted and love-starved, are easy to fool and manipulate. Without the healthy influence of two loving parents, so are their children.Feminism is a grotesque fraud perpetrated on society by its governing elite. It is designed to weaken the American social and cultural fabric in order to introduce a friendly fascist New World Order. Its advocates are sanctimonious charlatans who have grown rich and powerful from it. They include a whole class of liars and moral cripples who work for the elite in various capacities: government, education and the media. 132 killed in massive flooding in southern China

BEIJING – Major rivers burst their banks in southern China, triggering massive floods that have killed 132 people and forced 860,000 to flee their homes, the government said Sunday. With dozens missing and more storms forecast, the death toll was expected to rise.More than 10 million people have been affected since torrential rains began June 13, including those who have been injured, stranded or have suffered property losses, the Ministry of Water Resources said in a news release.

While the death toll was up from 90 on Saturday, the number of evacuees was lower than the previous day's figure of 1.4 million. Another 86 people are still missing.

China sustains major flooding annually along the mighty Yangtze and other major rivers, but this year's floods have been especially heavy, spreading across nine provinces and regions in the south and along the eastern coast.Thousands of houses have been destroyed and economic losses have topped 14 billion yuan, the ministry said.More thunderstorms were forecast from Sunday afternoon into Monday, according to the official meteorological bureau.State broadcaster CCTV aired images of rescues performed by boat, truck and helicopter.Waters have surged past safe levels in dozens of rivers, including the Pearl River in the heart of China's industrial powerhouse of Guangdong. The strong storms have collapsed reservoirs, overflowed rivers, caused landslides and power outages and damaged highways.The flooding follows the worst drought in a century for the southern provinces and regions of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. Tropical Storm Celia near cusp of hurricane force

MEXICO CITY – Tropical Storm Celia threatened to become a hurricane Sunday as it howled toward open seas, away from Mexico's Pacific coast.The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami warned the storm was expected to gradually strengthen and it already had maximum sustained winds of about 65 mph (100 kph).Celia was centered about 345 miles (555 kilometers) south of Acapulco Sunday morning, the hurricane center said, and it was moving westward at about 7 mph (11 kph).That course would take toward the open Pacific and forecasters said it posed no immediate threat to land.Elsewhere Sunday, Tropical Storm Blas weakened far from land, with its maximum winds dropping to 45 mph (75 kph), down from about 60 mph (95 kph) Saturday night.

That storm was centered 430 miles (695 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and it was moving west-northwest at about 12 mph (19 kph). Forecasters said it could fade into a tropical depression by Monday.

ON THE GULF OF MEXICO – Drilling crews are grinding ever deeper to build the relief wells that are the best hope of stopping the massive oil leak at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.The crew of Transocean Ltd.'s Development Driller II was on track to pour cement starting early Sunday to firm up a section of metal casing lining one of two relief wells.BP and government officials say the wells are the best option for cutting off the gusher that has spilled as much as 125 million gallons into the Gulf since the Transocean drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 workers.Back on land, coastal residents were infuriated by news that BP PLC CEO Tony Hayward was taking a break from overseeing efforts to stop the leak to watch his 52-foot yacht, Bob,compete in a race around the Isle of Wight off southern England.Man, that ain't right. BEIJING – China's decision to end its currency's 2-year-old peg to the U.S. dollar is stirring anticipation of a gradual appreciation in the yuan in trading Monday — an increase that would bring relief to foreign manufacturers struggling to compete with cheap Chinese products.Beijing has long refused to allow the yuan, also known as the renminbi, to float and denied accusations that its currency is unfairly undervalued. The debate became particularly strident during the global recession, when manufacturers from Brazil, Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere were especially stung by China's ability to keep the prices of its exports low.But the Communist leadership has finally acceded to foreign pressure just a week ahead of a summit of the G-20, where President Hu Jintao would likely to have been hammered by critics of the currency policy.China, however, is still steering a path to recovery, and with workers at home demanding wage hikes — which would also increase the price of exports — the central bank has sought to curb speculation of a major strengthening of the yuan's value.There is at present no basis for major fluctuation or change in the renminbi exchange rate, the People's Bank of China said in a lengthy commentary posted on its website Sunday.Keeping the rate at a reasonable, balanced level would contribute to economic stability and help restructure the Chinese economy with greater emphasis on services and consumption, the statement said.

Telstra strikes $10B deal for Australia broadband

CANBERRA, Australia – The government and Australia's largest telecommunications company announced a deal Sunday that clears a major hurdle to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's plans for a superfast national broadband network.The Australian dollars 11 billion ($9.6 billion) deal will give the government-owned company building the new network, the National Broadband Network Co., or NBN, access to existing infrastructure owned by Telstra Corp., which controls the only national communications network.The deal means NBN will not have to build its own infrastructure — considered one of the largest and most expensive parts of the government's AU$43 billion plan.The government will pay Telstra AU$9 billion for access to infrastructure including pits, ducts and wires, and a further AU$2 billion to help Telstra set up a new company to implement the deal.Telstra will also be able to move its customers from its existing copper wire and cable networks to the new fiber-optic one.Announcing the deal, Rudd said on Sunday it would be mean the rollout of the new broadband network would be faster, cheaper and more efficient.

The government last year announced a plan to deliver broadband speeds of 100 megabits per second to 90 percent of Australian homes, schools and businesses within eight years through fiber-optic cables connected directly to buildings.The role that Telstra — a former government-owned monopoly that controls the aging copper wire system that is Australia's only national communications network — would play was not immediately clear. Negotiations with the government started last year.Telstra is now privatized, but remains heavily regulated to promote competition from smaller phone companies that rent access to its existing copper line network.The government wants Telstra to further dilute its market dominance by splitting its wholesale and retail businesses, and has introduced legislation to encourage that move. The housing market is hot and three-quarters of the 400,000 jobs lost during the recession have been recovered.World leaders have noticed: President Barack Obama says the U.S. should take note of Canada's banking system, and Britain's Treasury chief is looking to emulate the Ottawa way on cutting deficits.The land of a thousand stereotypes — from Mounties and ice hockey to language wars and lousy weather — is feeling entitled to do a bit of crowing as it hosts the G-20 summit of wealthy and developing nations.We should be proud of the performance of our financial system during the crisis, said Finance Minister Jim Flaherty in an interview with The Associated Press.He recalled visiting China in 2007 and hearing suggestions that the Canadian banks were perhaps boring and too risk-adverse. And when I was there two weeks ago some of my same counterparts were saying to me, You have a very solid, stable banking system in Canada,and emphasizing that. US cautions Pakistan over pipeline deal with Iran

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AFP) – The US special envoy to Pakistan said Sunday he had warned Islamabad against signing a deal with Iran on a gas pipeline, saying the US was preparing laws that could affect the project.We cautioned the Pakistanis not to over-commit themselves until we know the legislation, Richard Holbrooke, US President Barack Obama's special envoy to Afghanistan as well as Pakistan, told reporters.Pakistan has an obvious major energy problem. Under the new system, the government said practically all non-military items can enter Gaza freely.From now on, there is a green light of approval for all goods to enter Gaza except for military items and materials that can strengthen Hamas' military machine, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said.Israel decided on Thursday to ease the blockade under intense international pressure after its raid on a blockade-busting international flotilla bound for Gaza killed nine pro-Palestinian activists.In a critical shift, Israel said it would allow construction materials into Gaza for projects approved by the Palestinian Authority, such as housing and schools, as long as the projects are under international supervision. Up to now, Israel has banned most construction materials, including cement.Construction materials are a critical need in Gaza. Thousands of buildings were destroyed or damaged in Israel's military operation in Gaza a year and a half ago, aimed at stopping years of daily rocket attacks by Gaza militants. A Hamas Cabinet minister, Ziad al-Zaza, rejected the Israeli decision, calling it deception.He told The Associated Press the blockade must be lifted completely to allow Gaza to import all necessary materials, particularly cement, iron, raw materials for industry and agriculture, as well as import and export between Gaza and the world.Under its blockade, Israel has banned all exports from Gaza, further crushing its economy. (CBS) Murad Tawalbi was arrested near Haifa. He had planned to blow himself up in a crowded marketplace. He is 19 years old and comes from a refugee camp near the West Bank town of Jenin.Who recruited him and gave him the bomb? His older brother.I went down to him, he showed it to me,says Murad. I took his hand and kissed it because he wanted to give me something precious.He wasn't trying to make me wear an explosive belt. He was giving me a ticket to heaven. Because he loves me, he wants me to become a martyr. Because martyrdom is the most exalted thing in our religion. Not just anyone gets the chance to become a martyr.Murad failed. But others succeeded. Fifty-four Israelis were killed, and 636 were wounded in suicide bombings this past year. Many of the bombers came from Gaza, a desolate strip along the Mediterranean which has spawned so many revolts against Israeli occupation. Correspondent Bob Simon reports.

Dr. Eyad Sarraj, a Muslim, heads up Gaza's only psychiatric clinic. The families of suicide bombers often come to him for help after the deed is done. That's how he has built up his profile. But are the people who want to become suicide bombers especially violent? No. On the contrary. If you look at their personal histories, they usually were very timid people, introvert, their problem was always communication in public or communicating their feelings, so they were not violent at all, says Sarraj. There is a pool of suicide bombers everywhere in the world among the community of Islam and Arabs everywhere. They are ready to act when the time comes. Anybody who is living in this area, including yourself, would have seen the rise of temperature, the rise of hatred, the rise of anger every year after year because of the continuous suffering of these people.And in Gaza, if you want to tap into this pool of hatred and suicide bombers, you don't need to go further than the neighborhood mosque.If they know I am the one who is going to recruit, they will come for me. I just give the message in the mosque that this is what we should do, says Sarraj. And then people who are ready will contact me.Hamd Abu Mailek, 23, a student of business administration, found that somebody. On June 17, he wound up driving a donkey cart down a Gaza road towards an Israeli checkpoint. Next to him was 20 kilos of explosives and lots of nails.The explosives were connected to a button, and the minute I would press it, the bomb would explode, says Hamd. The explosives didn't go off. It just didn't work.There was something wrong with the detonator. There was nothing wrong with the explosives. The Israelis blew them up a few minutes later, along with the cart and the donkey. As for Hamd, they'd shot him three times in the legs, and then captured him.Was Hamd disappointed that he didn't kill any Israelis? But Hamd should still be in good shape with his God. Just listen to the sermon in Gaza's main mosque, broadcast live on Palestinian TV last month. The message: Whoever joins a holy war is considered a martyr and is worthy of entering Paradise even if he didn't accomplish his goal.But it's not just the vision of Paradise that attracts these young men. In fact, many of them, Murad and Hamd included, say they were not particularly religious before they decided to become martyrs. In Gaza, there is a cult of the suicide bomber. There is no higher calling, no higher fashion statement, than the bomb around the belt. The martyr is worshipped. He is on walls and in windows. He is like an idol for many young people now. It is something to aspire to be, a martyr,says Sarraj. In all my teenage time, my symbols were body-builders and movie stars and singers and people like that. Then it changed ... the guerrilla, the fighter, then it was the stone thrower, and today it is the martyr.But many people in the United States would see these suicide bombers as simply crazy, psychotic.

Does Sarraj agree? No. They are not psychotic.Dr. Ariel Merari, head of the Center for Political Violence at Tel Aviv University, has studied every suicide bombing in the Middle East since the U.S. Marine barracks were blown up in Beirut 18 years ago. He says the only abnormal thing about the suicide bomber is, at a certain point, a total absence of fear.I don't know of a single case of a person who is really psychotic, says Merari. And still, this absolute absence of fear, I doubt that it is a general personality characteristic. I doubt that this person under any circumstances would be fearless. On this mission, to which he was prepared for so long, like a coiled spring that just wants to be released.It's the job of the organization, the cell, to get the terrorist to that point, the point of no return. The aspiring martyr is told to write last letters to his family and friends. He is photographed in a heroic pose. He makes a video explaining why he is becoming a martyr.

Imagine coming home after all that.After I saw the bomb I wrote my will. And I was on video,remembers Murad. I read a verse of the Koran. That is my will, and then everybody says goodbye to their own family, so that when my mother hears on television that I have become a martyr, she will burst with joy and make cries of joy.After that point, Merari says, the suicide candidate is called the living martyr. It’s kind of like being part of the walking dead. Being at that stage, a person sees himself as already dead,says Merari.There is no return for him without really losing any self-respect, the respect of others, but also because his mental state is already focused on killing himself, on being dead. He is already there, on the other side, actually.Murad explained, I was very happy. I was waiting for the time to come. I was counting the seconds before I went down. I felt very calm, as if nothing were happening. When I put on the belt of explosives, it felt like it was nothing at all. My brother put it on me, and I was watching him, looking for tears in his eyes, but there weren't any. He was smiling, and that encouraged me more.It took Murad 30 minutes to drive to the border. What was going on in his mind before he attempted to blow himself up? I was just thinking about saving the Palestinian people. That's all, remembers Murad. I never felt so calm in my life. It was the will of God.As a man who studied this phenomenon more than anyone else, how well does Merari think he understands the state of mind of one of these men in the minutes before he dies? Some of them were elated, apparently. Ecstatic, in the last moments,says Merari.You probably remember the description of the suicide guy who drove a truck into the Marine Barracks in Lebanon in October 1983. He was described by the guard at the entrance to the compound, and the guy said amazingly, He was smiling.They just saw the new door, the new life. Strongly people believe here and in Islam that you don't die,adds Merari. When you join an army, there is a possibility to die, but in this case you are not going to die … As a martyr for Islam and for Palestine, it is absolutely sure that you are going to come out alive.

MEMRI: 72 Black Eyed Virgins: A Muslim Debate on the Rewards of Martyrs

Approximately two weeks prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City and Washington, DC a dispute emerged between the CBS network and heads of two Islamic organizations in the US regarding the motivation of suicide bombers in Israel. The dispute was forgotten following the attacks, but in their aftermath, another look at it is warranted:

The Translation Dispute

On August 19, 2001, CBS's 60 Minutes aired a report on the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas. Reporter Bob Simon interviewed Hamas operative Muhammad Abu Wardeh, who recruited terrorists for suicide bombings in Israel. Abu Wardeh's words were translated into English by CBS as follows: I described to him how God would compensate the martyr for sacrificing his life for his land. If you become a martyr, God will give you 70 virgins, 70 wives and everlasting happiness.(1)

Some Muslim leaders contended that the English translation did not match the Arabic and accused CBS of fabricating the quote. Leaders of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), a US organization, wrote to 60 Minutes and demanded a retraction, an apology, and time on the show for Islamic scholars to explain the religion's true teachings regarding violence and martyrdom.(2)

CBS News admitted that the English voiceover did not match the Arabic quote, but played an unaired portion of the interview for a Knight Ridder editor who speaks Arabic and for two native Arabic speakers. After viewing the tapes, Hafez Al-Mirazi Osman, Washington bureau chief of the Al-Jazeera television network, stated that in the portion that did not air the interviewee said: Paradise has many things. It is said it has everything a man would wish for. It has 72 angels... or wives... It has the eternal blessing that people would receive there...

CBS translated the Arabic term hur ayn (3) as virgins.According to Osman and the other native Arabic speaker, Dr. Maher Hathout, a scholar at the Islamic Center of Southern California, the Arabic word has no sexual connotation or gender. Hathout said that a more appropriate translation would be angel or heavenly being. CBS said its Arabic expert insisted on CBS's translations.(4)

MPAC's Executive Director in Los Angeles, Salaam Al-Maryati, said, For Palestinians, this is about fighting aggression and occupation, not about opportunities for sexual fantasies. He added that the issue is important to the estimated 7 to 10 million Muslims who he claims live in the US, because it confirms their fears that media organizations are intent on defaming their faith.(5)

In a published report, Hathout added, There is nothing in the Koran or in Islamic teachings about 70 virgins or sex in Paradise. This is ridiculous, and every true Muslim knows that.(6) According to Hathout, the worst-case scenario is that there is a deliberate spinning of the news. It is very fashionable now to present the Muslims as particularly susceptible to being crazy or blowing themselves up.(7)

The Martyr's Reward in Islamic Tradition

Maryati's and Hathout's claims aroused the ire of Sheikh Abd Al-Hadi Palazzi, head of the Cultural Institute of the Italian Islamic Community. Sheikh Palazzi wrote: The only ridiculous thing is that someone who claims to be an Islamic scholar [i.e. Hathout] makes public statements which prove beyond any possible doubt that he has never read the Tafsir [Koranic commentary] of Ibn Kathir and the Sunan [religious rulings based on the customs of the Prophet] of Imam Al-Tirmidhi, which are basic books for the knowledge of Islam. Unfortunately, this attribution of chairs to ignoramuses seems to be the rule in American Islamic Centers controlled by the fundamentalist network of the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to Islamic tradition, Sheikh Palazzi states there are 72 wives for every believer who is admitted to Paradise, not only for a martyr. The proof is in a Hadith (Islamic tradition) collected by Al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Sunan (volume IV, chapters on The Features of Paradise as described by the Messenger of Allah, Chapter 21: About the Smallest Reward for the People of Paradise,Hadith 2687).

Sheikh Palazzi added that it is also quoted by Ibn Kathir in his Tafsir of Surah Al-Rahman (55), verse 72: It was mentioned by Daraj Ibn Abi Hatim that Abu-al-Haytham Abdullah Ibn Wahb narrated from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, who heard the Prophet Muhammad saying: The smallest reward for the people of Paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a.(8)

Sheikh Palazzi cites verse 74 of the same Surah, [The chastity of the black-eyed] was not violated by man nor jinn to prove that that they are virgins. In addition, the black-eyed are mentioned in three other Surahs in the Koran: Al-Dukhan 54, Al-Tur 20, and Al-Waqi'a 20. Women with downcast eyes,that is, chaste women, are mentioned in three Surahs: Al-Rahman 56-8, Al-Safat 48, and S, 52.

Al-Azhar University in Egypt, the main authority for Sunni Islamic rulings, also takes the black-eyed seriously. Al-Azhar's unofficial website features a religious ruling section, in which the institution's clerics answer questions by readers from all over the world. An Australian Muslim asked the following: If men [in Paradise] get the black-eyed,what do the women get?

The answer, provided by the deputy director of Al-Azhar's Center for Islamic Studies, Sheikh Abd Al-Fattah Gam'an, read: The Koran tells us that in Paradise believers get the black-eyed, as Allah has said, And we will marry them to the black-eyed.The black-eyed are white and delicate, and the black of their eyes is blacker than black and the white [of their eyes] is whiter than white. To describe their beauty and their great number, the Koran says that they are like sapphire and pearls (Al-Rahman 58) in their value, in their color, and in their purity. And it is said of them: [They are] like well-protected pearls in shells (Al-Waqi'a 23), that is, they are as pure as pearls in oysters and are not perforated, no hands have touched them, no dust or dirt adheres to them, and they are undamaged. It is further said: They are like well-protected eggs (Al-Safat 49), that is, their delicacy is as the delicacy of the membrane beneath the shell of an egg. Allah also said: The black-eyed are confined to pavilions' (Al-Rahman 70), that is, they are hidden within, saved for their husbands.

Most of the black-eyed were first created in Paradise, but some of them are women [who came to Paradise] from this world, and are obedient Muslims who observe the words of Allah: We created them especially, and have made them virgins, loving, and equal in age.This means that when the women of this world are old and worn out, Allah creates them [anew] after their old age into virgins who are amiable to their husbands; equal in age means equal to one another in age. At the side of the Muslim in Paradise are his wives from this world, if they are among the dwellers in Paradise, along with the black-eyed of Paradise.

If a woman is of the dwellers in Paradise but her husband in this world is not of the dwellers in Paradise, as in the case of Asia the wife of Pharaoh, she is given to one of the dwellers in Paradise who is of the same status... Regarding the woman who was married [during her life] to more than one man in this world, and all her husbands are dwellers in Paradise, she may choose among them, and she chooses the best of them. It is said that Umm Salmah asked the Prophet: Oh Prophet of Allah, a woman marries one, two, or four husbands in this world and later she dies and enters Paradise, and they enter with her. Which of them will be her husband? [The Prophet] answered: She... chooses the best of them, saying, Oh Allah, this is the best of them that was with me in this world, marry me to him... Thus it is known that the women of Paradise also have husbands. Every woman has a husband. If her husband in this world is of the dwellers in Paradise [he becomes her husband in Paradise], and if her husband in this world is an infidel, she is given to one of the dwellers in Paradise who is suited to her in status and in the [strength] of his belief.(9)

A Question of Belief

Dr. Hathout described the Koran passages as nothing more than folklore, saying that such descriptions of Paradise aren't meant to be taken literally, just as many Christians do not really believe heaven has streets paved with gold.(10)

But the question is whether every true Muslim knows that there is nothing in the Koran or in Islamic teachings about 70 virgins or sex in Paradise,(11) as Dr. Hathout said. Do Muslims living in areas where Jihad has been declared - for example, the West Bank and Gaza Strip - where political correctness is less a factor as it is where Hathout lives, in Southern California, also maintain that such descriptions of Paradise aren't meant to be taken literally? Moreover, the more important question is, what do the clerics say?

The death announcements of martyrs in the Palestinian press often take the form of wedding, not funeral, announcements. Blessings will be accepted immediately after the burial and until 10 p.m....at the home of the martyr's uncle,read one suicide bomber's death notice.(12) With great pride, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad marries the member of its military wing... the martyr and hero Yasser Al-Adhami, to the black-eyed,read another.(13)

Al Risala, the Hamas mouthpiece, published the will of Sa'id Al-Hutari, who carried out the June 1, 2001 suicide bombing outside the disco near the Dolphinarium in Tel Aviv that killed 23, mostly teenage girls. I will turn my body into bombs that will hunt the sons of Zion, blast them, and burn their remains,Al-Hutari wrote. Call out in joy, oh my mother; distribute sweets, oh my father and brothers; a wedding with the black-eyed awaits your son in Paradise.(14)

The same view is also evident in news reports in the Palestinian press. Thus, for example, the reporter Nufuz Al-Bakri reported the death of Wail Awad as follows: The mother of Wail Awad, from Deir El-Balah, did not plan on holding a second wedding for her eldest son, after his marriage on August 10, 2001 to his fiancée in a simple ceremony attended only by the family. But yesterday was Wail's real wedding day, and the angels of the Merciful married him, together with the [other] martyrs, to the black-eyed,as all around [them] rose the cries of joy that his mother dreamed of on the day of his wedding [to his fiancée].(15)

Hamas official Ashraf Sawaftah told of a ceremony honoring Izz Al-Din Al-Masri, who carried out the suicide bombing of the Sbarro pizzeria in central Jerusalem on August 9, 2001: His relatives distributed sweets and accepted their son as a bridegroom married to the black-eyed,not as someone who had been killed and was being laid in the ground.(16)

The uncle of Nassim Abu Aasi, who died while he was attempting to carry out an attack, said that when the deceased was asked why he was not married, he would always reply, Why should I relinquish the black-eyed to marry women of clay [i.e. flesh an blood]?(17)

This is part of the Islamic belief, Hamas leader Isma'il Abu Shanab once explained to AFP. Anyone who dies a martyr's death has a reward. If the martyr dreams of the black-eyed, he'll get her.(18)

The Hamas movement educates the children in its schools, beginning in kindergarten, to believe that a martyr is given virgins in Paradise. Jack Kelley of USA Today visited Hamas schools in Gaza City, where he saw an 11-year-old boy speak to his class: I will make my body a bomb that will blast the flesh of Zionists, the sons of pigs and monkeys... I will tear their bodies into little pieces and will cause them more pain than they will ever know.His classmates shouted in response, Allah Akhbar, and his teacher shouted, May the virgins give you pleasure. A 16-year-old Hamas youth leader in a Gaza refugee camp told Kelley, Most boys can't stop thinking about the virgins.(19)

Along with the media, Palestinian Muslim clerics also help instill this belief. In an interview with the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram Al-Arabi, Palestinian Authority Mufti Sheikh Ikrima Sabri was asked what he felt when he prayed for the soul of a martyr. He answered: I feel that the martyr is lucky, because angels bring him to his wedding in Paradise... I spoke with one young man, who told me: I want to marry the black-eyed women in Paradise. The next day, he died a martyr's death. I am certain that his mother was filled with joy over his heavenly wedding. Such a son is worthy of such a mother.(20)

Sheikh Abd Al-Salam Abu Shukheydem, Chief Mufti of the Palestinian Authority police force, mentioned the black-eyed as one of the rewards of martyrs: From the moment the first drop of his blood is spilled, he does not feel the pain of his wounds and he is forgiven for all his sins; he sees his seat in Paradise; he is saved from the torment of the grave; he is saved from the great horror of Judgement Day; he marries the black-eyed; he vouches for 70 of his family members; he gains the crown of honor, the precious stone of which is better than this entire world and everything in it.(21) In a Friday sermon broadcast on Palestinian television, Sheikh Ismail Al-Radwan declared: He is given 72 black-eyed.(22)

The Americans and the eunuchs at their sides [i.e. the rulers of Arab and Islamic countries]... think that if they kill us, they will win, wrote Dr. Yunis Al-Astal, a lecturer in the Islamic Law Department at Gaza Islamic University, They do not know that with their weapons they only expedite our arrival in Paradise. We yearn to reach Paradise; it is our abode, and in it are the black-eyed, confined to pavilions, and also there are [women] with downcast eyes whose chastity has not been violated before us by either man or jinn. In contrast, the value of this world in which we live, which they [i.e. the Americans and the Arab rulers] think that they have attained, is in our eyes not worth the wing of a mosquito...(23)

In an interview with the Israeli daily Ha'aretz,(24) Sheikh Raid Salah, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, and the most important political and religious leader of Israel's Arab population was asked Do 70 virgins await a shahid (a martyr) in paradise? Sheikh Salah replied: On this matter, we have proof. It is written in the Koran and in the Sunna [the traditions about the life of Mohammed]. This matter is clear. The shahid receives from Allah six special things, including 70 virgins, no torment in the grave, and the choice of 70 members of his family and his confidants to enter paradise with him.

The suicide attackers who carried out the September 11 attacks also believed that the black-eyed were one of the rewards awaiting them in Paradise. The letter of instructions found in Nawwaf Al-Hamzi's car mentioned the black-eyed twice: ...Don't show signs of uneasiness and tension; be joyful and happy, set your mind at ease, and be confident and rest assured that you are carrying out an action that Allah likes and that pleases Him. Therefore, a day will come, Allah willing, that you will spend with the black-eyed in Paradise... Know that the gardens [i.e. Paradise] have been decorated for you with the most beautiful ornaments and that the black-eyed will call to you: Come, faithful of Allah, after having donned their finest garments.(25)

The Black-Eyed and Sexual Relations

Are the black-eyed available for sex? Some evidently think they are. The Israeli media reported on a suicide bomber caught before he managed to carry out his mission; he was wearing a towel as a loincloth to protect his genitals for use in Paradise.

The question of sexual relations was also brought up in an interview that Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Muhammad Sayyed Tantawi gave to the Egyptian weekly Aakher Sa'a. To the question What is the meaning of the Koranic verse And we will marry them to the black-eyed? Tantawi replied, This verse heralds to faithful believers that in the world to come, Allah will set 'the black-eyed' to serve them, so that they will have wives, along with the righteous women from this world.

Getting straight to the point, the interviewer asked, Do people in Paradise have sexual relations? This issue is known only to Allah,said Tantawi.It is enough that we know that Paradise offers [everything] to satisfy the soul and gladden the eye. Regarding other, private matters, only Allah knows. It is enough for us that the Koran says, It has [everything] to satisfy the soul and gladden the eye, and in it you have life everlasting.(26)

In a review of the Egyptian press in the London daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi, the veteran Egyptian journalist Hasanain Kurum explained that Sheikh Tantawi knowingly gave a vague answer to the question, so as to avoid a scandal like the one created a few years previously by the late author and journalist Muhammad Galal Al-Kushk. Al-Kushk wrote, The men in Paradise have sexual relations not only with the women [who come from this world] and with the black-eyed, but also with the serving boys. According to Kurum, Al-Kushk also stated, In Paradise, a believer's penis is eternally erect.(27)

Gulf spill could swing Obama's power play on energy policy

Will the Gulf oil spill finally lead to a more aggressive energy policy to wean America from oil — or to more far-reaching measures to reduce the risks of climate change? A bill that would do both has been stalled before Congress for months, as Republicans and even some Democrats claim it would raise energy costs and lead to lost jobs. But outrage over the black tendrils of oil spewing from BP’s broken well in the Gulf is creating new opportunities for the once moribund legislation.A new poll from the Pew Research Center shows widespread public support for more renewable energy, tougher energy efficiency standards, and climate policies that would limit the harmful greenhouse gas emissions that are the source of global warming — even if such action would raise the price of energy. Surprisingly, a majority of Republicans in the poll supported taking steps to reduce climate change and protect the environment.That’s the kind of support that Congress may find hard to ignore — and that President Obama is hoping to exploit.In his June 15 Oval Office speech, the president made an impassioned plea to finally end America’s addiction to fossil fuel. The tragedy unfolding on our coast is the most painful and powerful reminder yet that the time to embrace a clean energy future is now,he said. The next day Obama followed up, calling key senators such as John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) to begin a push for legislation to reduce America’s dependence on oil. The president also summoned Scott Brown (R-Mass.) to the White House in a bid for bipartisan support.There’s plenty of reason for skepticism — presidents have been making such promises for decades. So much so, in fact, that Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart did a skit Wednesday mocking the fact that every president since Richard Nixon has proclaimed the need for energy independence — in virtually identical terms.

Yet the shifting mood could finally create momentum for Washington to act. The oil spill is a classic example of the way that policy windows open up when there is an event that really captures the attention and concern of the American, says Steve Corneli, senior vice president for market and climate policy at NRG Energy, a major utility based in Princeton, New Jersey.Because people care, politicians can respond in ways they couldn’t before.After months of frustration, some environmentalists are cautiously hopeful that progress is possible. The oil spill has really made it absolutely certain that there will be an energy bill brought to the Senate floor, says Steve Cochran, director of Environmental Defense Fund's National Climate Campaign.What the legislation would actually entail, however, remains murky. The president is inviting a bipartisan group of senators to the White House next week in hopes of kick-starting negotiations, with the aim of beginning to work on a bill in the Senate following the Fourth of July break. Broad support exists for boosting investment in nuclear energy, renewable power and energy efficiency — measures that exist in bills already introduced by Senators Lugar and Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.). But going further will be a fight.Much will depend on how strong the public call for action really is. Republicans opposed to climate change are counting on Americans not being willing to pay higher prices to drive their cars or heat their homes. Obama himself was clearly testing the political waters in his June 15 speech. He praised the Waxman-Markey climate legislation passed by the House of Representatives last summer, which puts firm limits on the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from power plants, cars, and other sources. By making it more expensive to emit carbon, and thus to burn fossil fuels, the House bill finally makes clean energy the profitable kind of energy for America’s businesses,Obama said.

But to the dismay of environmentalists, Obama failed to push for a similar Senate bill, proposed by John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), that would also put a cap on emissions. Instead, he said: I’m happy to look at other ideas and approaches — as long as they seriously tackle our addiction to fossil fuels. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) darkly warned that Obama is trying to exploit the oil spill to push a radical agenda.The tangled politics means that, even though the window for legislation has cracked open, the odds are still long. Environmentalists say it’s currently hard to imagine finding 60 votes in the Senate for a measure that puts a limit on carbon emissions.But without a cap, then progressives will not swallow more nuclear and drilling,says former Energy Dept. official Joseph Romm.A cap would also enable the government to sell permits to utilities and other manufacturers for the right to emit carbon; without one, Uncle Sam won’t have any revenue to pay for energy provisions like increased wind and solar power. One possibility, Romm believes, would be an energy bill that includes a cap on emissions for just one sector — power plants. That’s relatively easy because the utility industry already supports emissions limits.There’s still hope, supporters of a bill say. EMPIRE, La. – It could have been a turnaround week in BP's campaign to convince the public that it's doing everything possible to contain the damage from the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.The company pledged to set aside $20 billion to help spill victims, and the containment system at the site of the crippled well was capturing or burning increasing amounts of oil.Instead, the company faced renewed anger Saturday after reports that chief executive Tony Hayward had jetted back to England to attend an exclusive yachting competition.Hayward took Saturday off to see his 52-foot yacht Bob compete in a race around the Isle of Wight off southern England. It was a good day for sailing — breezy and about 68 degrees — but anger simmered on the steamy Gulf Coast, where crude oil is still gushing from a blown-out well.Man, that ain't right. None of us can even go out fishing, and he's at the yacht races,said Bobby Pitre, 33, who runs a tattoo shop in Larose, La. I wish we could get a day off from the oil, too.BP spokespeople rushed to defend Hayward, who has drawn biting criticism as the public face of BP PLC's halting efforts to stop the spill.Company spokesman Robert Wine said the break is the first for Hayward since the Deepwater Horizon rig that BP was leasing exploded April 20, killing 11 workers and setting off the undersea gusher.He's spending a few hours with his family at a weekend. White House officials have struggled to counter criticism of Obama's handling of the disaster. An Associated Press-GfK poll released Tuesday showed 52 percent now disapprove of Obama's handling of the spill, up significantly from last month.About 50 miles off Louisiana's coast, a newly expanded containment system is capturing or incinerating more than 1 million gallons of oil daily, the first time it has approached its peak capacity, according to the Coast Guard. BP hopes that by late June it will keep nearly 90 percent of the flow from the broken pipe from hitting the ocean. More than 120 million gallons have leaked already, according to the most pessimistic federal daily flow rate estimates. Oil has been washing up from Louisiana to Florida, killing birds and fish, coating marshes and wetlands and covering pristine beaches with tar balls and oily debris.A pair of relief wells considered the best chance at a permanent fix won't be completed until August. BP has put many idled commercial fishermen to work on the cleanup. But not everyone. Sai Stiffler spent Saturday repairing his shrimp boat at Delta Marina in Empire, La., on a hot and muggy day. NEW ORLEANS – Who's in charge? Depends on whom you ask.BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg told Britain's Sky News television on Friday that CEO Tony Hayward is on his way out as the company's point man on the Gulf oil spill crisis. He said Hayward is now handing over the operations, the daily operations to (BP Managing Director) Bob Dudley.Other company officials insisted, however, that Hayward was still the man and that the switch had already been announced and isn't immediate.Until the acute part of this crisis is over, until the leak is capped, Tony Hayward is still very much in charge in the response of this crisis,BP spokesman Robert Wine said.
Svanberg's remarks came a day after Hayward enraged members of Congress because he had few answers about how the environmental disaster could have happened. However, BP had said earlier this month that Dudley would take over the long-term response to the spill once the leak was stopped, which it hasn't.In the past eight weeks, between 65 million and 121.6 million gallons of oil have gushed into the Gulf of Mexico from a blown-out undersea well.Wine said Hayward will at some point hand over the management of the aftermath,and that Dudley is putting together a team that will make sure that the long-term impacts are met with as well as the legal, political repercussions from this crisis.Other company spokespeople also said Hayward was still in charge.There is no date for the handover, Wine said, because clearly the well is still leaking.Some positive news came Friday on the cleanup effort. Coast Guard Adm. His responsibilities include broad oversight of the company's activities in the Americas and Asia, and earlier this month he was named head of the company's disaster management unit.The company said in a June 4 news release that Dudley would manage the long-term day-to-day operations of the oil spill response once the spill was over, and that he would report to Hayward. BP said then that the shift was being planned because it wants Hayward to focus on running the company and Dudley to focus on managing the reputational impact, the financial obligations and restore trust and confidence of BP in America.Many Gulf Coast residents and business owners who have been economically devastated by the spill are still waiting for compensation from BP. The House Judiciary Committee said data it has collected shows that BP has paid $71 million out of an estimated $600 million in outstanding claims as of Tuesday. It based the figure on data it collected from BP's daily reports to the Coast Guard on claims and on discussions with BP.

BP spokesman Scott Dean said in an e-mail that the company had paid out $95 million as of Friday, and it had written about 30,000 checks to settle about half the 63,000 claims it has received. But Jerry Forte, who filed a business claim with BP more than a month ago, hasn't seen a dime. His seafood processing business on the docks in Pass Christian, Miss., used to bring in more than $1 million a year but now is practically shuttered.I'm 99 percent down. They took all the shrimp boats. I don't have anybody shrimping," Forte said Friday. My bank accounts are all going down to nothing because we're spending it all on bills, just waiting on BP.The slow claims process is just one of many criticisms lawmakers and the public have had with BP's response to the spill — and many of the toughest have been directed at Hayward.

Whether this change in Gulf leadership for BP will be productive remains to be seen, said Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich.I expect that Mr. Dudley will take a much more cooperative and open approach to answering our questions and responding to the needs of the Gulf region. If not, his tenure will likely be as short lived as Mr. Hayward's.The recent oil containment efforts are a rare bit of good news for BP and suggest that its engineers are getting better at trapping oil after a two-month string of failures with equipment that clogged, proved ineffective or was simply abandoned.This is a significant improvement moving forward,said Adm. Allen, the top federal official in charge of the spill. Even if the new containment systems are a success, it could take months for those living along the Gulf Coast to notice any improvement. As the Gulf oil spill approaches its third month, researchers are using a relatively new tool to track the plume: glider robots that use water power to zigzag through the ocean.Eight of these robots are now prowling the Gulf, driven remotely by researchers from institutions across the country. The gliders carry sensors to measure everything from water temperature to organic material that could mark the presence of dissolved oil.The idea, said Rutgers University oceanographer Oscar Schofield, one of the collaborators on the effort, is to track the spill and provide data on ocean movement to improve predictions of where the oil will go next.These gliders are collecting physical data that's helping keep the models on track, so they're helping improve the ocean forecast, Schofield told TechNewsDaily.The gliders look like torpedoes with wings. They move by sucking in seawater, which causes them to tip forward and sink. When the glider reaches the desired depth, it expels the water, causing it to tip back toward the surface. The cycle, controlled by a driver hundreds of miles away in a laboratory, propels the glider forward in a saw tooth pattern. This low-energy propulsion means that batteries that could run a propeller for mere days can keep the glider going for months.

Each glider carries sensors to measure ocean properties like temperature and salinity. That data can be entered into models to predict the movements of ocean currents - and of the spreading oil slicks.Other sensors sample the water chemistry in an effort to measure the effects of the spill. Chlorophyll detectors measure plankton blooms, and a device called a flourometer measures colored dissolved organic material, which can include oil. Each time the gliders surface, they beam this data back to researchers in the lab.The gliders in the Gulf launched in late May, and are currently off the coasts of Florida and Louisiana. A map of the robot's real-time location is available at rucool.marine.rutgers.edu/deepwater, along with the data collected.The Rutgers team is driving two of the eight gliders; the rest are controlled by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, the University of Delaware, the Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida, the U.S. Navy and the private company iRobot.Gliders were rare just five years ago, said Schofield, but they've become popular tools for research in the harsh conditions of the Antarctic, where the deployment of research vessels is difficult. In the Gulf, researchers continue to use data from ship-based monitoring, but the gliders are quicker and more maneuverable, Schofield said.The robots can provide a bigger spatial map to complement what the ships are doing,he said.They're really a supporting tool, but they can be out there in all conditions, all the time.

31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
33 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.
34 And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
35 And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
37 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
38 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.
40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.

NUMBERS 23:1-30
1 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.
2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.
3 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.
4 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.
5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.
6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.
7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.
8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied?
9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!
11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.
12 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?
13 And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.
14 And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.
15 And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder.
16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus.
17 And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken?
18 And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
20 Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.
21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.
23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!
24 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.
25 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.
26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?
27 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.
28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon.
29 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.
30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

NUMBERS 24:1-25
1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.
2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.
3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
4 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!
6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.
7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.
8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.
9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.
10 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.
11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.
12 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying,
13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?
14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.
15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.
21 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock.
22 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.
23 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!
24 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.
25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.

NUMBERS 25:1-9
1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

PROPHETS PORTION

MICAH 5:5 - 6:8
5 And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.
6 And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.
7 And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.
8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
9 Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.
10 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots:
11 And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:
12 And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:
13 Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.
14 And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.
15 And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.
1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.
2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.
4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.
6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?
7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

NEW TESTAMENT PORTION

2 PETER 2:1-21
1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.
12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet.
17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

JUDE 11
11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

REVELATION 2:14-15
14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
