Obama To Use BP Oil Spill As An Opportunity To Push His Economy Killing Climate Change Bill The Economic Collapse June 14, 2010 12:20PM

Never one to to allow a good crisis to go to waste, Barack Obama is pledging to use the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as an opportunity to push the U.S. Congress to pass his controversial climate bill. In fact, during a recent interview Obama directly compared the current crisis in the Gulf to 9/11, and indicated that he believed that it would fundamentally change the way that we all look at energy issues from now on. But the truth is that Obama’s climate bill is the same economy killing legislation that it was before the BP oil spill. It would still drive gas and electricity prices through the roof, it would still cause large numbers of U.S. businesses to flee overseas, it would still be one of the biggest tax increases in U.S. history and it would still usher in an unprecedented era of climate fascism. But now thanks to the BP oil spill there is suddenly a lot more momentum in Congress for doing something about energy and about climate change.Of course the truth is that carbon dioxide is not causing climate change and high levels of carbon dioxide are actually very good for the environment, but reducing carbon emissions has almost become a religion for radical environmentalists, and Barack Obama is absolutely determined to push through his cap and trade carbon trading scheme. In fact, just as 9/11 completely changed the war that Americans viewed the fight against terrorism, Barack Obama sees the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico fundamentally changing the way that Americans see energy issues. During a recent interview, Obama told Politico columnist Roger Simon the following….

In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come. Not only that, but Obama considers it one of his greatest leadership challenges to make sure that we all draw the right lessons from the BP oil spill…. One of the biggest leadership challenges for me going forward is going to be to make sure that we draw the right lessons from this disaster.

So what are those right lessons? Well, apparently what we are all supposed to get out of this disaster are the lessons that Obama has been trying to teach us all along – that carbon taxes and cap and trade schemes are good for us.But Barack Obama is not the only one urging us to learn the right lessons from the BP oil spill. In a recent interview with ABC News, Microsoft’s Bill Gates also linked the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico with climate change. Gates warned that if we don’t make the necessary changes soon that we will suffer severe consequences….We’ll have more crises like the oil spill and we’ll have the supply disruption. We’ll start to see more and more effects of the climate problem. But would the climate bill that Obama is pushing really save us from climate change? Of course not.But Barack Obama’s climate change bill would do the following things….
-It would drive gas and electricity prices through the roof.
-It would crush the already fragile U.S. economy by piling a bunch of new taxes and regulations on U.S. businesses. Needless to say, large numbers of them would begin looking for greener pastures.
-It would increase worldwide pollution by forcing companies out of the U.S. and into nations that have no restrictions on pollution whatsoever.
-When you add up all of the overt and hidden taxes in the bill, it would represent one of the biggest tax increases in U.S. history.
-Since every action we take involves the production of carbon emissions (including every breath that we take), it would open the door for an era of tyrannical climate fascism where the U.S. government literally monitors every aspect of our lives to make sure that we are being eco-friendly.But Barack Obama makes this climate bill sound like it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. In fact, he continues to promise that the number of green jobs gained by this bill will far outweigh the number of other jobs lost.

But is this true? Of course not.In fact, other countries that have tried a cap and trade scheme have experienced disastrous results. For example, a leaked internal assessment produced by the government of Spain reveals that the green economy there has been an absolute economic nightmare for that nation. Energy prices have skyrocketed in Spain and the new green economy in that nation has actually lost more than two jobs for every job that it has created. The unemployment rate in Spain is now hovering around 20 percent and the economy there is on the verge of complete and total collapse. In fact, if the government of Spain does end up defaulting on their debts, it could make the financial crisis that has been unfolding in Greece look like a Sunday picnic. It should be obvious to anyone with a brain that a climate bill like the one Spain implemented will devastate the U.S. economy. But facts haven’t gotten in the way of Barack Obama pushing his agenda before, so why should they now?

However, it is not just Barack Obama that is pushing an agenda of trying to radically reduce carbon emissions. All over the world, many of the global elite have joined forces with the radical environmentalists in an effort to save the world from the growing threat of carbon dioxide. And since each person on this planet is a source of constant carbon emissions, many of those who truly believe in this radical environmental agenda consider the rapidly growing population of the earth to be the number one cause of climate change. You see, to those obsessed with climate change, just getting corporations around the globe to radically cut carbon emissions is not nearly going to be good enough. The truth is that they know that in order to get carbon emissions down to where they want them to be, they are going to have to do something about the growing world population. To them, in the war against climate change anyone who breathes is the enemy. In fact, according to an official UN report, no human can ever truly be carbon neutral. So please understand that for those obsessed with climate change, carbon taxes and cap and trade are just the beginning. To truly achieve their goals, one child policies and forced abortions will also be necessary. So if Barack Obama does get his climate bill pushed through Congress and it does kill the U.S. economy, that would only be a first step for those truly dedicated to the radical environmental agenda. What they have planned after that is a whole lot more horrific.

Clean up efforts continue all over SLC from Chevron oil spill-All water access points along Red Butte Creek, Liberty Park and the Jordan River should be avoided by humans and animals at this time.FOX 13 News 1:12 a.m. EDT, June 14, 2010

SALT LAKE CITY — City officials have reported the pipeline has been capped and crews began excavating the ten-inch pipeline Sunday afternoon to try to determine the cause of the leak. Environmentalists and city officials are trying to stop the oil slick from reaching the Great Salt Lake.Salt Lake City officials and Chevron crews have been working since early morning Saturday, June 12 to stop a severe oil spill discovered East of Red Butte Canyon. The number of barrels of oil released is estimated at 400-500.Crews continue with clean-up efforts at Liberty Park and surrounding neighbors and ask residents to do clean up the mess themselves. The main issue that we're asking is that residents don't engage in cleaning up the oil in their backyard. It is a hazardous material, it does have a skin contaminant element to it and we're asking them to stop, said Lisa Harrison-Smith.

Residents are advised to stay away from Red Butte Canyon and Liberty Park so crews can adequately manage the spill. All water access points along Red Butte Creek, Liberty Park and the Jordan River should be avoided by humans and animals at this time. The Salt Lake Valley Health Department said the oil has leaked into the Jordan River in two areas on the Salt Lake City's west side.Officials say drinking water for residents has not been affected and will have no threat for residents surrounding the area.We are working tirelessly with Chevron teams to contain this spill from the critical ecological areas affected in our City, said Mayor Ralph Becker. Our fire teams have capped the site and will work to determine the damage and best course of action. We ask all residents of Salt Lake City to help by staying away from these areas.Chevron has a pipeline bringing crude oil in from western Colorado and eastern Utah into the Salt Lake Valley. This pipeline runs down Emigration Canyon and heads west over Beck Street to the company refinery.Chevron said it's launched an investigation into what caused the pipeline leak. The company will not speculate on the cause and fixing the ecological damage could cost the company millions of dollars. They are bringing in clean-up crews from out of state and had more than 60 workers on site cleaning up the oil from the waterways. We regret the impact this has had on the community. We're working hard to minimize it. We take full responsibility for the situation, said Chevron Rep. Sean Comey. The company asks that anyone with concerns or questions to please call 1-(866)-752-6340.

A town hall meeting is scheduled for Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Clayton Middle School located at 1471 South and 1900 East in Salt Lake City. Mayor Becker and Chevron officials will update the public on the latest conditions and any progress being made in the clean-up effort.FOX 13's Ben Winslow reports.

BP deploys deepsea sensors to better measure spill By RAY HENRY and BRIAN SKOLOFF, Associated Press Writers - 3:30AM JUNE 14,10

NEW ORLEANS – BP mounted a more aggressive response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday as it started deploying undersea sensors to better measure the ferocious flow of crude while drawing up new plans to meet a government demand that it speed up the containment effort ahead of President Barack Obama's visit to the coast. The financial ramifications of the disaster are growing by the day as the White House and states put pressure on BP to set aside billions of dollars to pay spill-related claims in a move that could quickly drain the company's cash reserves and hasten its path toward possible bankruptcy.BP PLC spokesman Mark Proegler said the company would not make public its response due Sunday to a letter from the Coast Guard demanding that it intensify the efforts to stop the spill. One of the actions BP took Sunday was to use robotic submarines to begin positioning sensors inside the well to gauge how much oil is spilling. The robots were expected to insert the pressure sensors through a line used to inject methanol — an antifreeze meant to prevent the buildup of icelike slush — into a containment cap seated over the ruptured pipe, BP spokesman David Nicholas said.

BP was installing the sensors at the request of a federal team of scientists tasked with estimating the flow. The necessary equipment was first identified last week, and the installation procedures were approved over the weekend, said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Tony Russell, a spokesman for Adm. Thad Allen, the top federal official in charge of the spill response. The work should be completed by Tuesday.Scientists have wanted better data on the flow rate. But Russell said the installation of the sensors had to be timed so it did not interrupt the work of the containment cap. That cap was installed earlier this month and has been gradually brought toward its full capacity, although oil continues to escape the well.Scientists haven't been able to pin down just how much oil is leaking into the Gulf, although the high-end estimates indicated the spill could exceed 100 million gallons. The government has stressed that the larger estimates were still preliminary and considered a worse-case scenario.Allen, the Obama administration's point man on the oil spill, on Sunday said government officials think the best figures are from a middle-of-the-road estimate, which would put the spill at around 66 million gallons of oil. That is about six times the size of the Exxon Valdez spill.BP is currently capturing about 630,000 gallons of oil a day, but hundreds thousands more are still escaping into the Gulf. The company has said that it could begin siphoning an additional 400,000 gallons a day starting Tuesday by burning it using a specialized boom being installed on a rig — and any new success would be welcome news for Obama as he returns to the Gulf.

The president was scheduled to arrive in the Gulf on Monday for a two-day visit that will be followed by a nationally televised address to the American people on Tuesday and a sit-down with BP executives Wednesday. The crisis has already become a crucial test for the Obama presidency as it takes a greater toll on his image with each day that more oil gushes into the sea. We're at a kind of inflection point in this saga, because we now know that, what essentially what we can do and what we can't do, in terms of collecting oil, and what lies ahead in the next few months, senior adviser David Axelrod said on NBC's Meet the Press. And he wants to lay out the steps that we're going to take from here to get through this, through this crisis.Obama wants an independent, third party to administer an escrow account paid for by BP to compensate those with legitimate claims for damages. The amount of money set aside will be discussed during talks this week between the White House and BP, but the request will most definitely be in the billions.Louisiana's treasurer has told The Associated Press that it wants $5 billion. Florida said it wants $2.5 billion. We are aware of the request, said BP spokeswoman Sheila Williams in London. She declined to comment further.BP could have to tap its cash reserve to pay the fund while also borrow money to comply. That, however, presents a potential problem because the company's borrowing costs are likely to be a lot higher due to investor concerns.

Oil again began washing up in heavy amounts along the shores of Orange Beach, Ala. on Sunday afternoon as the winds shifted, turning the surf into an oily red mixture that left brown stains at the surf line.A plane flew along the coast pulling a sign that read: Obama, 55 days. What's it gonna take? Earlier in the day, crews wearing rubber globes and boots used shovels to scoop up the oil, sand and tar ball mixture and put it into trash bags. The disposal of oil-soaked dirt and sand is part of a broad effort playing out across the Gulf Coast to clean up the mess.Waste Management received a contract from BP to transport waste produced by cleanup crews assigned to work the stretch of the coastline. Ken Haldin, a Waste Management spokesman, said Sunday that the company has designated 65 trucks and 535 containers that are being filled with solid oil waste.Waste Management has designated three landfills in three different states that are operated by the company to handle the oily refuse. Haldin noted that before the refuse is dumped, it has to be analyzed by both the waste removal company and by local government environmental authorities to make sure it is nonhazardous.Waste Management also is handling some of the liquid waste skimmed from the ocean by cleanup crews, and has set up special equipment, including vacuum trucks, along the docks that separates oil from the water. Once separated, the oil will be resold to oil services companies. This is a major mobilization effort, noted Haldin.Skoloff reported from Orange Beach, Ala. Associated Press Writers Anne D'Innocenzio in New York, Harry R. Weber in Houston and Jay Reeves in Orange Beach, Ala., contributed to this report.(This version CORRECTS Corrects Allen's title to admiral; Multimedia: An interactive timeline looking at the affect on marine life, surface currents carrying the oil spill and the life cycle of shrimp and coral reefs is available at _national/flood_timeline. EU offers equipment to US as oil spat brews
ANDREW WILLIS 11.06.2010 @ 18:06 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Union has pledged to send additional equipment to help contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, even as Washington and London appear to be heading for a diplomatic spat over the disaster.Europe is determined to fight this ecological disaster alongside the US authorities, the EU's crisis response commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, said in a statement on Friday (11June) after several member states offered support. Sweden, Germany, Norway, the UK and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) agreed to provide booms used to restrict the oil spreading following a US request on Thursday evening. Dutch equipment is already being used by US authorities who are desperately trying to contain oil escaping from an underwater well after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, leased by UK energy giant British Petroleum, exploded on 20 April, killing 11 workers. Latest estimates suggest 25,000 barrels per day are still escaping despite a partial capping of the well last week. On Friday, British deputy prime minister Nick Clegg warned against a growing row between the two sides of the Atlantic. I don't frankly think we will reach a solution to stopping the release of oil into the ocean any quicker by allowing this to spiral into a tit-for-tat political diplomatic spat,he said from Spain after a meeting with the Spanish prime minister.

The caution comes after Mr Clegg's boss, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday reminded the US of the economic value BP brings to the US, as share values in the embattled company plummeted. Earlier in the week, US President Barack Obama launched a direct attack on BP's chief executive Tony Hayward, saying he would have fired the executive if he was in charge of the company. He added that he was on a fact-finding mission to find out whose ass to kick over the disaster, which pundits say could damage Mr Obama's political standing. British press report that the two leaders are set to discuss the issue in a telephone call tomorrow.

Lessons for Europe?

The ecological disaster caused by the spill has prompted European politicians to examine their own safety procedures and ability to cope with a similar event, while environmentalists say the event highlights the West's continued over-dependence on fossil fuels. This is clearly a result of politicians believing that the oil industry knew what they were doing, said Greenpeace spokesman Mark Breddy. Drilling for oil is not the solution, we must develop renewable resources.Norway indicated earlier this month that it will not allow any deepwater oil and gas drilling in new areas until the investigation into the explosion and spill in the US Gulf of Mexico is complete. National regulators in a number of member states have been told by governments to double-check safety procedures, while the EU is looking into the need for new legislation.EU energy commissioner Gunther Oettinger called in senior energy executives on 11 May to explain their ability to deal with a comparable incident. The German politician is keen to identify any loopholes in the bloc's current legislation, although officials stress that Europe's deepwater drilling is much less prevalent than in the US.In July, the commissioner will consult with national regulators and may then come forward with new proposals. If it turns out from these consultations and the analysis of the Gulf of Mexico accident that there is something we do not have in place, then he will consider making a proposal, Marlene Holzner, the commission's energy spokeswoman, told this website.Europe's legislation in the oil sector was stepped up after the sinking of the Erica and Prestige oil-tankers in 1999 and 2002.

BP exec gives pep talk amid US tensions over spill By RAY HENRY and HARRY R. WEBER, Associated Press Writers - JUNE 13,10 4:30 AM

SCHRIEVER, La. – A top BP executive acknowledged the growing tensions between the oil giant and the federal government but also gave workers at a command center a much-needed pep talk, reminding them of the huge challenge they faced as they try to stop a massive oil leak and keep the crude away from the fragile Gulf Coast.BP's public image has taken a beating and its stock price has plunged since the April 20 explosion of a deep-sea rig that killed 11 people and triggered a massive oil spill that has coated parts of the Gulf Coast with stinking, dark piles of crude and created environmental and economic devastation.Hours before BP's chief operating officer, Doug Suttles, thanked hundreds of BP workers, government officials and contractors at the command center, the Coast Guard made public a testy letter sent to him demanding the energy giant pick up its pace and present a better plan to contain the spill by the time President Barack Obama arrives at the beleaguered coast on Monday.Suttles didn't address the letter when he spoke with workers who crammed into the center on the Louisiana coast, but admitted there were big frustrations out there. Nearby wall postings reminded the bleary eyed that emergency operations had gone on for 53 days. It's a huge challenge, we're doing something that we hoped we'd never have to do, but we're doing something that no one's ever done before,he said. And I want to say thank you. You guys are doing a tremendous job under horribly difficult circumstances.Saturday's meeting was a tightly staged event. Though media were invited, reporters were escorted into the command center for his speech but had to watch from the sidelines as Suttles greeted four BP employees in a side hallway.Suttles later said in an interview that the company would respond to the letter by Sunday night. As the federal government ramped up pressure on BP, Gulf states affected by the disaster also were putting the squeeze on the company, seeking to protect their interests amid talk of the possibility that BP may eventually file for bankruptcy.

The attorney general in Florida and the state treasurer in Louisiana want BP to put a total of $7.5 billion in escrow accounts to compensate the states and their residents for damages now and in the future. At the end of the day, my concern is Louisiana, state treasurer, John Kennedy, told The Associated Press on Saturday. BP ultimately will do what BP thinks is best for BP.Alabama doesn't plan to take such action, and Mississippi and Texas haven't said what they will do.But even with Florida and Louisiana, BP might have a hard time complying, and if it did, it could hasten the company's spiral downward. That's because as of March 31, BP had $6.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents available.Experts say BP wouldn't necessarily need to use cash to fund the accounts the states are asking for. Instead, the company could borrow money to comply. That, however, presents a potential problem because the company's borrowing costs are likely to be a lot higher due to investor concerns.BP said in a statement to the AP that it's considering the Florida request. It didn't address the comments by Kennedy. We have received a variety of funding requests from different states and have been responding to them in due course based on the particular issues raised in each, BP said, adding that it already has made grants totaling $245 million to four Gulf states and is committed to spending up to $360 million to fund construction of six barrier island berms in Louisiana. And as to the concerns raised about a possible bankruptcy filing, BP said only that as of Saturday it was not in discussions with and had not engaged any bankruptcy experts.

Along the Gulf coast, ominous new signs of the tragedy emerged on the beaches of Alabama. Waves of unsightly brown surf hit the shores on Saturday in Orange Beach, leaving piles of oil that dried in the hot sun and extended up to 12 feet from the water's edge for as far as the eye could see. It was the worst hit yet to Alabama beaches. This is awful, said Shelley Booker of Shreveport, La., who was staying in a condominium with her teenage daughter and her friends near the deserted beach about 100 miles from the site of the spill.Scientists have estimated that anywhere between about 40 million gallons to more than 100 million gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf since a drilling rig exploded. The latest cap installed on the blown-out well is capturing about 650,000 gallons of oil a day, but large quantities are still spilling into the sea.BP is hard at work trying to find new ways to capture more oil, but officials say the only way to permanently stop the spill is a relief well that will drill sideways into the broken well and plug it with cement. To boost its capacity, BP also plans to trap oil using lines that earlier shot heavy drilling mud deep into the well during a failed attempt to stop the flow. This time, those lines will work in reverse. Oil and gas from the well will flow up to a semi-submersible drilling rig where it will be burned in a specialized boom that BP estimates can vaporize a maximum 420,000 gallons of oil daily. Suttles said this system could be working by early next week.Another ship should be in place by mid-July to process even more oil.Henry reported from Schriever, La., Weber from Houston. Associated Press Writer Jay Reeves in Orange Beach, Ala., contributed to this report.

Coast Guard to BP: Speed it up, stop the spill By JAY REEVES and RAY HENRY, Associated Press Writers 10:45PM JUNE 12,10(MY ADD STOP THE SPILL IF YOU CAN UNLESS GOD IS FULFILLING PROPHECY THEN NO ONE WILL STOP THE SPILL NO MATTER WHAT TRICKS THEY TRY OR PROPAGANDA THEY PULL)

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The Coast Guard has demanded that BP step up its efforts to contain the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico by the end of the weekend, telling the British oil giant that its slow pace in stopping the spill is becoming increasingly alarming as the disaster fouled the coastline in ugly new ways Saturday.

The Coast Guard sent a testy letter to BP's chief operating officer that said the company urgently needs to pick up the pace and present a better plan to contain the spill by the time President Barack Obama arrives on Monday for his fourth visit to the beleaguered coast. The letter, released Saturday, follows nearly two months of tense relations between BP and the government and reflects the growing frustration over the company's inability to stop the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history. The dispute escalated on the same day that ominous new signs of the tragedy emerged on the beaches of Alabama. Waves of unsightly brown surf hit the shores in Orange Beach, leaving stinking, dark piles of oil that dried in the hot sun and extended up to 12 feet from the water's edge for as far as the eye could see.It was the worst hit yet to Alabama beaches. Tar-like globs have washed up periodically throughout the disaster, but Saturday's pollution was significantly worse. This is awful, said Shelley Booker of Shreveport, La., who was staying in a condominium with her teenage daughter and her friends near the deserted beach about 100 miles from the site of the spill.Scientists have estimated that anywhere between about 40 million gallons to more than 100 million gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf since a drilling rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers. The latest cap installed on the blown-out well is capturing about 650,000 gallons of oil a day, but large quantities are still spilling into the sea.The Coast Guard initially sent a letter to BP on Wednesday asking for more details on its plans to contain the oil. BP responded, saying a new system to trap much more oil should be complete by mid-July. That system's new design is meant to better withstand the force of hurricanes and could capture up to roughly 2 million gallons of oil daily when finished, the company said.

But Coast Guard Rear Adm. James A. Watson said in a follow-up letter Friday he was concerned that BP's plans were inadequate, especially in light of revised estimates this week that indicated the size of the spill could be up to twice as large as previously thought.BP must identify in the next 48 hours additional leak containment capacity that could be operationalized and expedited to avoid the continued discharge of oil ... Recognizing the complexity of this challenge, every effort must be expended to speed up the process, Watson said in the letter addressed to chief operating officer Doug Suttles.Suttles said the company will respond to the letter by Sunday night. We've got a team of people looking to see, can we accelerate some of the items that are in that plan and is it possible to do more,Suttles said in a brief interview after speaking to workers at a command center where he thanked BP employees and contractors for their work in cleaning up the spill. There are some real challenges to do that, including safety.Suttles also acknowledged that there's big frustrations out there. They're out there in the community, they're out there in government, they're out there everywhere. And I think they're all rooted in the fact that none of us want this to happen. And none of us want this to occur, and we all want it to get fixed now.The letter and deadline come just before Obama is set to visit the Gulf Coast on Monday and Tuesday. On Saturday, Obama reassured British Prime Minister David Cameron that his frustration over the oil spill in the Gulf was not an attack on Britain. The two leaders spoke by phone for 30 minutes Saturday. Cameron also has been under pressure to get Obama to tone down the criticism, fearing it will hurt the millions of British retirees holding BP stock that has taken a beating in recent weeks.Cameron's office said the prime minister told Obama of his sadness at the disaster, while Obama said he recognized that BP was a multinational company and that his frustration had nothing to do with national identity.BP is hard at work trying to find new ways to capture more oil, but officials say the only way to permanently stop the spill is a relief well that will drill sideways into the broken well and plug it with cement.Right now, a containment cap sitting over a well pipe is siphoning off around 653,100 gallons of oil to a ship the ocean surface. That oil is then unloaded to tankers and taken ashore.

Another ship should be in place by mid-July to process even more oil. News that the federal government had given BP until the end of the weekend to speed up the oil containment was met with raised eyebrows and long sighs as locals gathered to barbecue, drink Budweiser and listen to classic rock at a fishing benefit in Pointe a la Hache, La.I'll believe it when I see it, said Dominic Bazile, a firefighter. On a Florida beach about 190 miles from the rig explosion, a stainless steel tank with markings that identified it as having come from the Deepwater Horizon washed up on shore. Bay County Sheriff Deputy Ray Maulbeck was working beach patrol Saturday when he came upon the wreckage. The Coast Guard and state environmental officials took the piece away. Meanwhile, Gulf states affected by the disaster are putting the squeeze on BP, seeking to protect their interests amid talk of the possibility that BP may eventually file for bankruptcy. The attorney general in Florida and the state treasurer in Louisiana want BP to put a total of $7.5 billion in escrow accounts to compensate the states and their residents for damages now and in the future. Alabama doesn't plan to take such action, while Mississippi and Texas haven't said what they will do.As of the end of March, BP had only $6.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents available.BP said in a statement that it is considering the Florida request. It didn't address the comments by the state treasurer in Louisiana. Weber in Houston contributed to this report. Henry reported from Schriever, La.

Coast Guard tells BP to speed up containment pace By JAY REEVES and RAY HENRY, Associated Press Writers 3:30 PM JUNE 12,10

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The federal government has given BP until the end of the weekend to find ways to speed up efforts to contain huge amounts of oil gushing from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a letter released Saturday, as large globs of brown crude coated Alabama's white sand beaches.Coast Guard Rear Adm. James A. Watson sent a letter to BP officials on Friday expressing frustration with the overall pace of the effort and ordered the company to identify ways to expedite the process in the coming says.Recognizing the complexity of this challenge, every effort must be expended to speed up the process, Watson wrote in the letter, sent to Doug Suttles, BP's chief operating officer.BP has struggled with several efforts to contain the oil. The latest cap installed on the blown-out well is capturing about 650,000 gallons of oil a day, but large quantities are still spilling into the sea.

Scientists have estimated that anywhere between about 40 million gallons to 109 million gallons of oil have gushed into the Gulf since a drilling rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers and triggering the worst oil spill in U.S. history. The Coast Guard initially sent a letter to BP on Wednesday asking for more details on its plans to contain the oil. BP responded, saying a new system to trap oil spewing from the well should be complete by mid-July.That system's new design is meant to better withstand the force of hurricanes and could capture about 2 million gallons of oil daily when fully built, the oil giant said. But Watson said he was concerned that BP's plans didn't maximize resources or go far enough to mobilize redundant resources in the event of an equipment failure or another problem.BP must identify in the next 48 hours additional leak containment capacity that could be operationalized and expedited to avoid the continued discharge of oil, Watson wrote.

BP spokesman Jon Pack said the company received Watson's letter and would respond to it as soon as possible. The letter and deadline comes just before President Barack Obama is set to visit the Gulf Coast on Monday and Tuesday. On Saturday, Obama reassured British Prime Minister David Cameron that his frustration over the oil spill in the Gulf was not an attack on Britain, the British government said. The two leaders spoke by phone for 30 minutes Saturday to soothe trans-Atlantic tensions over the huge spill. Cameron also has been under pressure to get Obama to tone down the criticism fearing it will hurt the millions of British retirees that hold BP stock.Cameron's office said the prime minister expressed his sadness at the ongoing human and environmental catastrophe, but stressed BP's economic importance to Britain, the U.S. and other countries. It said Obama recognized that BP — which he has pointedly referred to in public by its former name, British Petroleum — is a multinational company, and that frustrations about the oil spill had nothing to do with national identity.Obama said he had no interest in undermining BP's value. The company's stock has lost 40 percent of its value since the oil rig fire on April 20 that unleashed the United States' worst oil spill.Along the Gulf Coast, Alabama's beaches took their worst hit yet from the oil spill on Saturday as chocolate-colored oil slathered beaches along the coast.During a flight over the Gulf, Sean Brumley, an aerial spotter, said he saw an oily sheen and brown patches of oil floating for miles off the Alabama coast. Boats trying to remove the oil before it hit the coast worked about three miles out.The Gulf looks like it has chicken pox,Brumley said.

On the beach, pools of crude oil as much as 4 inches deep hit the beach in waves, and the surf was a dark, ugly shade of brown. No one was in the water, and the beaches that normally are packed with people this time of year were virtually deserted. Stinking, dark piles of oil dried in the hot sun, extending as much as 12 feet from the water's edge for as far as the eye could see.I didn't think it was a big deal yesterday. This is awful, said Shelley Booker of Shreveport, La., who was staying in a condominium with her teenage daughter and six of her friends. The beaches in Florida's Panhandle were largely free of tar Saturday — but signs of the fight against the spill were everywhere. Officials have said that two wide sections of the slick were just off the shoreline. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Jon Jarvis, director of the National Park Service, rallied volunteers and employees at Gulf Islands National Seashore on Saturday, preparing them for a long fight against the oil.But the slow movement of the oil and constant preparations for its arrival were taking toll on beach residents. It's like waiting for someone to die from cancer, said Greg Hall, who walks the beach each morning.Reeves reported from Orange Beach, Ala.; Henry from New Orleans. Associated Press writers Melissa Nelson in Pensacola Beach, Fla., Dave Martin in Orange Beach, and Jill Lawless in London contributed to this report.

Spill oil to seep into supply chain as BP sells it By RAY HENRY, Associated Press Writer 430AM JUNE 12,10

NEW ORLEANS – Oil from nation's worst spill could soon end up at gas stations, construction sites and even grocery stores once BP sells the crude taken from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico to raise money for wildlife protection.Energy giant BP PLC announced this week it will donate its share of the proceeds generated by selling the oil captured from the well to fund efforts to protect and restore wildlife habitat along the Gulf Coast. The company has not released specifics on how the fund will work and said it doesn't know how much money might be raised — but once the oil is brought to shore, it will creep into the world's economic supply chain unnoticed by consumers.Oil is oil, said Julius Langlinais, professor emeritus of petroleum engineering at Louisiana State University. There's no stamp or anything on it. It's all the same molecules.Scientists have estimated that anywhere between about 40 million gallons to 109 million gallons of oil have gushed into the Gulf since a drilling rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers and triggering the worst oil spill in U.S. history.Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the Obama administration's point man for the oil spill, said that since the leak began, 4 million gallons of crude have been siphoned off the leaking well using tubes and caps. An additional 18 million gallons have been skimmed from the ocean surface, he said. The skimmed liquid is generally only 10 to 15 percent oil.Negotiations were still ongoing Friday to find a buyer for all that captured oil, BP spokesman Mark Proegler said. There's nothing special about it, other than everyone's looking at it,he said.

It's possible the oil won't even be sold to a refinery directly by BP or even processed in the Gulf. Big oil companies have trading departments that commonly swap barrels of crude with other firms or sell them to traders who could route the oil across the globe, Langlinais said.Once that crude hits a refinery, the oil could end up in a wide array of fuels and products including gasoline, diesel, heating oil, asphalt and plastic — including the bags used at grocery stores, the cases for cell phone and microwaves. It also can be used as raw feed for chemical companies.I think it's an eye-opening experience for people who don't give it much thought when they finally realize how much their lives depend on oil,Langlinais said.BP has said it plans to boost its ability to directly capture oil gushing from the well by early next week. A semi-submersible drilling rig would capture and burn up to 420,000 gallons of oil daily. Once on board, the oil and gas collected from the well will be sent down a boom and burned at sea.A drill ship already at the scene can process a maximum of 756,000 gallons of oil daily that's sucked up through a containment cap sitting on the well head.Federal officials are still reviewing BP's plan to build a new containment system designed to capture more oil and be more durable during hurricane season. Allen said the plan could be revised based on calculations of how much oil is spilling from the well. It's unclear how much the captured oil will be worth once it's sold. Oil was trading around $74 a barrel Friday, but BP officials said they expect to get a lower price than normal because the oil captured from the leak is laced with methanol.BP is injecting methanol as an antifreeze into the inside of the containment cap sitting over the gushing well to prevent the buildup of an ice-like slush that can clog the pipes.

Under its operating agreement, BP gets 65 percent of the net revenue made by selling oil from the leak site. After deducting for royalty payments owed to the government, it will donate its share of the proceeds to the wildlife fund. Anadarko Petroleum Corp., which is entitled to 25 percent of the oil revenue, is still discussing what do with its share of the money when the oil is sold, Anadarko spokesman Matt Carmichael said. We're committed to doing the right thing,he said.A subsidiary of Mitsui & Co. Ltd., which has a 10 percent stake, declined to comment.

Breaking Is Alvin Greene a Republican plant? Congressman James Clyburn thinks that Greene, the unlikely victor in a South Carolina Democrat primary, was paid to run for office. Could it be true? posted on June 11, 2010, at 2:25 PM

The incredulity over Alvin Greene's surprise win in the Democrat primary for South Carolina's Senate seat shows no sign of abating. House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D—SC) openly accused the unprepossessing 32-year-old, who won without holding a single campaign event, of being a political pawn: There were some real shenanigans going on,Clyburn told a radio talk show. I don't know if he was a Republican plant; he was someone's plant.Greene has denied this, saying his victory was due to word of mouth.Could there be any truth to Clyburn's allegations? (Watch Keith Olbermann drill Alvin Greene about his past)This is a set-up engineered by those good ol' SC boys: Greene's victory means only one thing, says Devona Walker at AlterNet.Someone rigged the Democratic primaries down in Dixieland. The good old boys in South Carolina proved they were willing to stoop to dirty tricks with the ugly Nikki Haley affair. I'm just wondering how long it will take for Greene to crack under the pressure. The curious case of Alvin Greene.

Why would anyone run a plant against sure-thing Jim DeMint? The idea of the plain-spoken Greene being a plant raises more questions than answers, says Allahpundit at Hot Air. For one, Republican Jim DeMint is a mortal lock to be re-elected in South Carolina, so why would you risk all the bad publicity and possible criminal repercussions of rigging the election? Another trainwreck: Olbermann interviews America's candidate.Wouldn't you choose a more convincing plant? Even if you did want to run a plant against DeMint, says Jim Geraghty at the National Review, would you really entrust Alvin Greene — accused of a felony and hardly media friendly — to pull off a grand conspiracy? For that matter, would you trust Alvin Greene to water your plants while you're away? It's not easy being Greene, but apparently he wins easily. We're inventing conspiracies to explain his behavior: Judging from his extraordinarily vague interviews with the media, says Adrian Chen at Gawker, there seems to be literally nothing to Alvin Greene.Maybe we're trying to fill in that well of nothingness with our own conspiracy theories, when the only truth behind Greene's candidacy is he's just some random dude who accidentally won a Democrat primary.Mystery SC candidate's bizarre Keith Olbermann interview.

Van Rompuy planning foreign policy summit
HONOR MAHONY 11.06.2010 @ 17:46 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU leaders are to gather for a special meeting in September to discuss the foreign policy objectives of the Union, a topic pushed on to the agenda by the quick rise of other regions in the world. We have ... to redefine our role in the world, in the new world with emerging powers and the new polarity, said Belgium's EU ambassador Jean De Ruyt on Friday (11 June), while presenting the plan for his country's EU presidency, due to start 1 July. The 27 EU member states have been on something of the defensive about their role in the world since the December Copenhagen climate change summit. Despite considering itself a leader in environmental issues, the Union was not involved in the key deal-making negotiations, driving home the emerging new pecking order in the world, particularly the powerful role of China. In addition, the EU's new rule book, the Lisbon Treaty, while providing for a stronger Union through fewer external relation figures and faster decision-making channels, has yet to be backed up by a change in mindset. We certainly have to redefine our relations with the emerging countries, our relationship with India, with China, is not what it should be. It is based on the relationship adapted to a situation of 10 years ago, Mr De Ruyt told an audience at the European Policy Centre think-tank in Brussels. But discussion around the issue is difficult because prioritising some areas necessarily implies de-prioritising others. Individual member states tend to have pet foreign policy projects, many of which are influenced by past colonial times. An EU diplomat recently remarked that the Spanish, for example, would likely never agree to downgrading relations with Latin America.

It is a very difficult thing to discuss about because, you can have the cafe du commerce [run of the mill discussion] which is not very dangerous or you can say things that can have a dangerous effect on our relations with third countries because we should not give the impression that we are under threat or on the defensive, the Belgian ambassador said. The extraordinary leaders' gathering has been called by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. It is to be the second such single-issue summit after he hosted an economy-focussed discussion in February.
September's topic also underlines Mr Van Rompuy own keen interest in external affairs rather than just the economic issues he has been most associated with to date. As the president, his job is to give political impetus to the regular EU meetings but also to represent the bloc on common foreign and security issues at leader level. The one-theme summit is also a bid to get leaders to really focus and make clear decisions in certain areas, with the traditional European Councils tending to be wide-ranging, discursive affairs producing small booklets of conclusions. An innovation meeting is planned in October, while Mr Van Rompuy would like EU leaders to discuss energy in January.

Ashton in last ditch attempt to get diplomatic service agreed next week
HONOR MAHONY 11.06.2010 @ 22:29 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is engaged in a last-bid attempt to win a political agreement on the diplomatic service next week.On Friday evening (11 June), she sent a letter to MEPs, the Spanish foreign minister and the EU institutional affairs commissioner to arrange final four-way talks to iron out the remaining differences on the new corps. With member states and the commission having agreed the blueprint in April, the remaining piece of the negotiating puzzle has to be filled by MEPs.They are determined to ensure the communitarian nature of the diplomatic corps, which is supposed to give coherency and ready expertise to EU foreign policy. Three open issues remain. MEPs want to attach the service to the European Commission, ensure coherency in development policy and make sure national diplomats from member states do not outnumber EU officials in the new body.Ms Ashton's side believe the final shape can be agreed in a last meeting. We are making good progress towards reaching the political agreement which will allow for the establishment of the External Action Service. Agreement was tantalisingly close at Tuesday's [8 June] Quadrilogue, says the letter. It goes on to make clear that Ms Ashton still wants to get service agreed ahead of Thursday, allowing EU leaders meeting that day to sign off the outline, freeing her up to begin staffing it.However, something of a power play between the parliament and Ms Ashton is in evidence. The foreign policy chief claims to have indicated her readiness to meet on Friday (11 June). Deputies, who have already won several concessions on the service make-up, said they did not receive an invitation.Putting the ball back in the MEPs' court, Ms Ashton suggests meeting Tuesday or Wednesday in Strasbourg or Friday in Brussels. The last European Council of the Spanish Presidency [on Thursday] provides an obvious focal point, the letter stresses.Negotiators are keen to get the service up and running by the year's end - much later than the Spring timing originally foreseen. But the talks were complicated by the entirely new institutional beast being created and the need to get agreement from several parties.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The chief of Europe's trade union chiefs, John Monks, has warned that the austerity packages being imposed across the bloc will send the continent back to the 1930s.He reported that European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso also fears member states will turn their back on democracy - but for the opposite reason. This is extremely dangerous. This is 1931, we're heading back to the 1930s, with the Great Depression and we ended up with militarist dictatorship, the general secretary of the European Trades Union Congress (ETUC) said in an interview with EUobserver.I'm not saying we're there yet, but it's potentially very serious, not just economically, but politically as well.Mr Monks reported that Mr Barroso has similar concerns, but based on diametrically opposed reasoning. He said the commission chief believes the austerity packages will save Europe from returning to the darkest days of the last century rather than precipitating the fall. I had a discussion with Barroso last Friday about what can be done for Greece, Spain, Portugal and the rest and his message was blunt: Look, if they do not carry out these austerity packages, these countries could virtually disappear in the way that we know them as democracies. They've got no choice, this is it.He's very, very worried. He shocked us with an apocalyptic vision of democracies in Europe collapsing because of the state of indebtedness. In recent weeks, a wave of enthusiasm for draconian austerity measures has swept the continent well beyond the bloc's most troubled economies, which were forced to embrace such cuts in return for EU-IMF bail-outs. Spain has announced a package of austerity measures amounting to €13 billion.

Greece's austerity package amounts to €24 billion; Italy too is slashing by €24 billion. Germany has announced a whopping €80 billion in such measures and the new UK government has said it will cut spending by £6.25 billion (€7.51 billion), although based on earlier Tory pronouncements, experts believe Westminster will eventually unveil cuts amounting to £60 billion (€72 billion). France, which until this weekend had resisted austerity as a strategy, has said it too will cut by €45 billion. While the composition of the Dutch governing coalition is so far unknown, the leading party in last week's elections wants to cut spending by €45 billion. Ireland last year introduced measures worth €4 billion and Portugal's €2 billion includes a privatisation of 17 different government enterprises. Hungary's new right-wing government, which campaigned on easing the IMF-imposed austerity measures of the previous centre-left administration has instead announced further cuts of 120 billion forints, while the harshest of Europe's austerity measures, Romania's plans for across-the-board public sector wage cuts of 25 percent and pension reductions of 15 percent, have produced the country's biggest demonstrations since the fall of Communism. In the Baltics, Estonia's cutbacks worth 10 percent of GDP resulted in a 14 percent contraction of the economy and a jump in unemployment from 11 percent to 19.8 percent; and Lativa's almost identical cuts produced a contraction of 18 percent and a rise in joblessness to 22 percent.Trade unions, which have so far mounted a number of general strikes and protests in different countries, are intensifying their offensive against the austerity plans despite Brussels' misgivings, and are for the first time beginning to co-ordinate their actions across member states. Mr Monks said his executive committee has agreed to call a Europe-wide day of action on 29 September, including strikes, demonstrations and meetings with government ministers in all European countries. The date is scheduled to coincide with a meeting in Brussels of finance ministers. The ETUC did shy away from calling an outright European general strike., however. We're encouraging members to take strike action as part of a menu of different types of activities, but it's not a general strike,Mr Monks explained. We can't call Europe's unions out on strike - this has to be done at the national level and different people will react in different ways. Some countries have traditions of general strikes and some don't. They don't like the idea, especially the Nordics, Germany, UK, the Netherlands and eastern Europe. Half of the EU countries would not go for it.

In defence of Greece

Mr Monks said that attacks in the German press and other media on Greek workers and the public sector are unfair. The tabloids' description of Greeks as lazy and profligate is just not accurate. They aren't lazy. There may be some good retirement deals, but these are not universal by any means and not across the public sector. It's only a small part of the population that has these sort of deals. In his opinion, the main problem affecting the country is tax avoidance. What's more worrying about Greece is that the rich don't pay their taxes. They don't seem to believe in paying taxes. The biggest challenge for the country now is collecting its taxes from the rich, the comfortable, the bourgeoisie. These classes seem particularly adept at avoiding them.He conceded some cuts will have to be implemented in the Mediterranean country and elsewhere. Some countries have no choice - Ireland, Hungary, the Baltics, but elsewhere, leaders are just panicking, and in the middle of a recession, he said, adding that it is now the fashion as much in the strong economies as the weak ones to pay back debt. Even healthier economies - the Netherlands, the Germans' desperate wish to get back to a balanced budget by 2016 with the cuts that they are now imposing,he said. He named France as the sole country standing out against synchronised cuts across the EU, but he thinks that even Paris will capitulate sooner rather than later. Indeed, the Friday afternoon interview with the union leader, France has indeed announced austerity plans worth €45 billion.Greece obviously does have to change. It does have to tighten up ... the terms of the EU-IMF bail-out are the only terms Greece has got. They haven't got a choice, Greece. They've got to comply with what they've been given.

Best behaviour

He said that if Greece keeps on its best fiscal behaviour for some time, there is hope that Brussels and the IMF will lighten terms.I do hope after a period, if Greece shows that it's making a good attempt to fulfill the EU-IMF terms, the EU will not be so stubborn as to not agree to some sort of restructuring of the loans, rescheduling of payments, which is common enough for private companies. He said he felt that it is unfair that working people and the public sector are bearing the brunt of a crisis caused by others. What's happened is a massive transfer of debt from the banking sector onto the balance sheets of nation states. The lords of the financial markets are to blame.

1 still missing after Ark. flash floods kill 19 By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS, Associated Press Writer - JUNE 14,10

LANGLEY, Ark. – Like they had time and again, Leslie and Adam Jez packed their camper and headed for Arkansas' Albert Pike Recreation Area. But instead of leaving Friday, they and their 3-year-old met up with family a day earlier — a decision that proved fatal.Flash floods pushed a torrent of water through their campsite on the edge of the Ouachita National Forest before dawn, killing at least 19 people including Leslie and her mother, Sherry Wade. Adam survived, but authorities haven't said whether their child, Kaden, was among the victims.State police said one person is still missing, and search teams plan to resume their work Monday morning.(Kaden's) only vocabulary when it wasn't mama and daddy consisted of tractors and horses,Leslie's grandfather, former Arkansas legislator Charles Bubba Wade, said Sunday. I can just see her holding the baby during the flood, Wade said of his granddaughter, his words choked with grief. No one has been found alive since Friday. The last two bodies recovered — one Saturday and the other Sunday — were found among the tangled piles of tents, trees, children's toys and clothing in the rugged, heavily wooded terrain along the Little Missouri River.Wade said camping trips and the outdoors were commonplace for his large family. His children and grandchildren went to Boy and Girl Scout events in the Albert Pike Recreation Area, and Kaden and his mother rode horses and rounded up cattle together.Little Kaden had been up here on my 81st birthday, sitting on my lap with cowboy boots on, said Wade, who spent 18 years as a state lawmaker and introduced the legislation that created the nearby Millwood State Park.Adam Jez, an electrician, and his wife, a college student, decided to begin their camping trip early because he had to work Saturday. The floods descended on their campsite only a few hours after they arrived.Floodwaters rose as swiftly as 8 feet per hour, pouring through the remote valley with such force that they peeled asphalt from roads. Cabins along the river banks were severely damaged, and mobile homes were tossed on their sides.

Forecasters had warned of the approaching danger in the area during the night, but campers could easily have missed the advisories because the area is isolated. It was a real tragedy for our family and for everyone else who chose that spot, Wade said. I'm just speechless.Fifty miles of river and tributaries have been combed at least twice by search crews, some places three or four times, said Forest Service Incident Commander Mike Quesinberry. But the terrain has made it impossible to bring in heavy equipment to unlock some of the piles. One measured 30 feet high and more than 100 feet long, he said. This is an area that's so rugged, there's so much debris ... you can't get to it, said Arkansas State Police Capt. Mike Fletcher. But he said there are no plans to end the search. We'll continue the search as long as we feel there may be someone in there, he said.Wade didn't blame anyone for the tragedy, calling it an act of God.But he said there should be a better way of informing campers of such danger, perhaps through an electronic warning system.Gosh darn, I know everyone regrets the loss, but everything can be improved upon,he said. There can be a better warning system, whether it's three in the morning or three in the afternoon.Among many families of the missing and dead, the stages of grief played out over the weekend, as heartache turned to anger. Today, it's mostly the question of why? and trying to understand, said local pastor Ted DeWeese.Everything that was a help yesterday is an intrusion today.

Mudslide hits western Canadian town
Sun Jun 13, 10:13 pm ET

VANCOUVER (Reuters) – A mudslide destroyed about a dozen buildings including five homes Sunday in the fruit growing region of southern British Columbia, police and local media said.No fatalities were immediately reported, but rescue crews using a helicopter and dogs were searching the wrecked building near Oliver, British Columbia for possible victims, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.A major roadway was also closed when the slide covered it with up to 12 feet of mud, police said. The cause of the slide was not known, but residents of the town about 160 miles east of Vancouver told local media it may have been caused by water escaping from a mountain stream that became clogged with debris during rains last week.

Strong earthquake shakes northern Japan
Sun Jun 13, 12:36 am ET

TOKYO – A strong earthquake rattled northern Japan on Sunday, and authorities said no tsunami was expected in the area. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the afternoon quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2.The earthquake occurred off the coast of the eastern Hama-dori region of Fukushima prefecture, which is located about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Tokyo.Tremors were felt in Tokyo and in neighboring prefectures, including Miyagi, Yamagata, Tochigi and Ibaraki. The agency did not issue a tsunami alert. The Tokyo Electric Power Co. said its two nuclear power plants in the prefecture were operating normally.Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. In 1995, a quake of magnitude 7.2 killed 6,400 people in the western port city of Kobe.

Powerful quake rattles Indian Ocean islands by S.Binoy Raj S.binoy Raj – Sun Jun 13, 2:42 am ET

PORT BLAIR, India (AFP) – A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck under the Indian Ocean near India's Nicobar and Andaman Islands early Sunday, triggering panic on the archipelago and an initial regional tsunami alert. The quake shook people from their sleep and briefly disrupted power supplies, causing alarm on a string of islands which were hit by the massive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.Tremors were also felt on mainland India, more than 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) from the epicentre near India's most easterly territories. It was very difficult to leave our home because the electricity went off and the entire Port Blair plunged into darkness during the earthquake, tour operator M. Vinod said from the capital of the Andamans. The quake struck at 1:26 am (1926 GMT Saturday) at a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles), with the epicentre around 160 kilometres west of the Nicobar Islands.Tsunami warnings issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii and India's National Centre for Ocean Information Services, were later withdrawn when no change in sea level was reported. The area is an earthquake hotspot, caused by the meeting of the Indian tectonic plate with the Burmese microplate along an area known as the Andaman trench.Sunday's undersea quake caused alarm as it shook people from their sleep, with the danger of tsunamis still high in the minds of local residents after the islands were badly hit by the 2004 disaster.

A police control room official in Port Blair said there were efforts to contact remote islands for reports on possible damage or casualties. So far there has been no such report, the officer said.Power supplies were disrupted for up to five minutes in some 30 other nearby Andaman islands following the quake, residents and officials said.Printer Mani Kontho in Port Blair said the earth shook for about 20 seconds and he fled his home as a precaution, like many others. On the mainland, many people ran into the street in the southern coastal city of Chennai as the quake rattled furniture. There were no reports of casualties or damage to property, local media said.More than 350,000 people live on many of the 572 Andaman and Nicobar islands flanked by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The 2004 tsunami, triggered by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, sent giant waves crashing across the region, killing more than 220,000 people. Most of the dead were in Indonesian province of Aceh but thousands were also killed in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and India.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning for the entire Indian Ocean region after Sunday's quake. This was downgraded to a warning for India only, when the magnitude was revised to 7.5 from 7.7, and later it was cancelled altogether. India issued a tsunami watch for 10-15 Andaman islands saying it was expecting only a mild surge in sea levels of about 50 centimetres (20 inches) but later withdrew the alert. There was no water level changes and so we have withdrawn the tsunami watch notice, National Centre for Ocean Information Services spokesman Ajay Kumar said. There has been no tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Kumar told AFP.Sunday's quake hit around 440 kilometres south of Port Blair and around 1,100 kilometres southwest of the Thai capital Bangkok. On June 1, a 6.4-quake struck in the same area and there was another measuring 5.3 on April 14.

EU, IMF delegation in Athens to review progress
JUNE 14,10

ATHENS, Greece – A delegation from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union is in Athens for an interim review of the country's efforts to pull itself out of a major debt crisis that pushed it to the brink of default. The delegation, which will stay in Greece for the week, arrived Monday and was holding meetings at the finance ministry.Greece is under strict supervision as part of the terms of a euro110 billion ($130 billion) package of rescue loans from the IMF and other EU countries using the euro. Athens received the first installment of loans in May, just in time to pay off maturing government debt, and is to receive the second in September.
Greece says it has exceeded deficit-cutting targets in the first five months of 2010.

SKorea recovers possible debris from fallen rocket By KWANG-TAE KIM, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jun 11, 4:03 am ET

SEOUL, South Korea – A South Korean navy ship on Friday recovered what is believed to be debris from a rocket that apparently blew up shortly after liftoff, as experts tried to find the cause of the latest setback to Seoul's space ambitions. The rocket carrying an observation satellite to study global warming and climate change likely exploded 137 seconds into its flight on Thursday and is believed to have fallen into the sea some 292 miles (470 kilometers) south of the space center. The South Korean navy plans to deliver the recovered parts to the country's state-run Korea Aerospace Research Institute for analysis, said Pyun Kyung-bum, a spokesman of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. He also said South Korea will closely consult with Russia in picking up other fragments. The first stage of the Naro rocket was designed and built by Russia and the second by South Korea. The two countries plan to quickly form a joint committee to determine the cause of the failure and discuss whether to launch a third rocket, according to the ministry. The blastoff at the coastal space center in Goheung, 290 miles (465 kilometers) south of Seoul, was the country's second launch of a rocket from its territory. In the first attempt last August, the satellite failed to reach orbit because one of its two covers apparently did not come off after liftoff. The rocket on which it was carried functioned normally, so South Korea saw that launch as a partial success.Since 1992, South Korea has launched 11 satellites from overseas sites, all on foreign-made rockets.

Thursday's launch was delayed a day because fire retardant suddenly sprayed Wednesday from three nozzles set up near the launch pad to extinguish any blaze.
Education, Science and Technology Minister Ahn Byong-man said Thursday that South Korea will begin preparations to announce a new launch date as soon as the cause of the latest failure is determined.

SKorea's president wants strong response to NKorea By HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press Writer - JUNE 14,10

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea's president stressed Monday the need to bolster military readiness and sternly respond to North Korea over the deadly sinking of a warship, or risk more such provocations.South Korea has taken a slew of punitive measures against North Korea — including resuming propaganda operations — after blaming Pyongyang for torpedoing the South Korean warship Cheonan in March. Forty-six South Korean sailors died.North Korea flatly denies the allegation and has warned any retaliation would trigger war. The country's military said Saturday it would launch an all-out strike against any South Korean propaganda facilities at the border such as loudspeakers and could even turn Seoul into a sea of flame. The North has made similar threats in the past. South Korea has reinstalled loudspeakers at the border after a six-year hiatus, but has yet to begin blaring propaganda. On Monday, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak renewed calls for a strong response. If we fail to sternly respond to North Korea's wrongdoing in cooperation with the international community and build up solid military readiness, a second and third provocation like the Cheonan incident can occur anytime, he said in a nationally televised speech.Lee also said he would revamp and strengthen South Korea's military and hold some officers responsible for the sinking.Lee didn't name any top officers but his comments came a day after his top military officer offered to retire amid criticism over alleged negligence ahead of the sinking. The Cheonan attack occurred along the disputed sea border — where three bloody sea battles have been fought.

Gen. Lee Sang-eui, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, submitted his application for retirement to Defense Minister Kim Tae-young, on Sunday, according to Lee's office. Kim is reviewing Lee's retirement offer, a Joint Chiefs of Staff officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity citing department policy. On Thursday, South Korea's top audit agency told the defense minister to punish Lee and 24 other senior defense officials for failing to ensure combat readiness ahead of the March 26 sinking. The audit body said the military had expected a North Korean submarine or submersible vessel could secretly attack a South Korean ship following a sea skirmish in the area in November and still failed to prevent the attack. The two Koreas are still technically at war because their 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The U.N. Security Council was set to review South Korea's request to punish the North, with Seoul officials scheduled to brief council members about the investigation results later Monday. North Korea also planned to explain its position on the sinking to council members right after South Korea, according to Seoul's Foreign Ministry. That was an outrageous act of aggression that we condemn and it needs to be punished, Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., said in an interview aired on Fox News Sunday that was taped Saturday. Our hearts go out to the families of the sailors whose lives were lost in that event.Later Monday, former President Kim Young-sam told a Seoul forum the U.N. must punish the North over the sinking, saying the regime is a serious threat to South Korea. Kim, a conservative who grappled with the first North Korean nuclear crisis in the mid-1990s, said the U.N. must get more actively involved in North Korean affairs, including human rights.Lee's speech was mainly meant to address major domestic issues including the ruling party's upset defeat in local elections earlier this month and a controversy over his plans to kill a project to relocate part of the government out of Seoul.AP Television News cameraman Yong-ho Kim contributed to this report.

EU: Pressure mounts for end of Gaza blockade By SLOBODAN LEKIC, Associated Press Writer - JUNE 14,10

LUXEMBOURG – EU officials said Monday there were indications Israel may agree to relax its blockade of Gaza by opening at least one border crossing to large-scale commercial traffic.EU diplomats also said Israel would likely drop its restrictive list of goods permitted into the region, which has left the territory's 1.5 million Palestinians mired in poverty.Instead, there would be a short, agreed list of items banned because of Israeli security concerns, the diplomats said on the condition that they not be named because of the sensitivity of the talks. One diplomat said that while no final decisions had been made, there were positive indications that Israel might be willing to open either the Karni or the Kerem Shalom border crossings for large-scale imports into Gaza. The diplomat said Israel rejected a proposal for cargo to be delivered by ships checked in a third location such as Cyprus. The Karni and Kerem Shalom crossings have been open for humanitarian goods for the past few years.Israeli security officials have said talks are now under way to replace the Israeli supervision with an international presence, with the involvement of the Palestinians and the Egyptians.

Officials in Luxembourg said this would somehow also likely involve the EU in some manner, and that the bloc would probably bear the costs of the operation. The most important part of what we can do is to try and provide support to actually get the crossings open and to ... help people rebuild their homes, to provide for businesses, to try to support everyday things, EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said.We should be ready to assist at any time with the policy of the crossings and whatever else we can do to assist, Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said. The European Union has reacted strongly to the May 31 Israeli commando raid that resulted in the deaths of nine Turkish activists. The 27-nation bloc has been pressing Israel to ease its three-year old blockade, which EU foreign ministers described as unacceptable and counterproductive in a draft statement released Monday.

International mediator Tony Blair will brief EU foreign ministers at a summit beginning Thursday.Spain, which holds the rotating EU chairmanship, said Saturday it would propose the bloc exert strong diplomatic pressure on Israel to end the closure.

Israeli Cabinet approves flotilla probe
JUNE 14,10

JERUSALEM – Israel's Cabinet has given final approval for an official investigation into the navy's bloody attack on a Gaza-bound flotilla two weeks ago.The inquiry will be headed by a retired Israeli Supreme Court justice and it will include two high-ranking foreign observers: Nobel Peace laureate David Trimble of Ireland and Canada's former chief military prosecutor, Ken Watkin. The Cabinet gave its approval on Monday.Israel has come under harsh criticism for its May 31 raid on the flotilla. LUXEMBOURG (AP) — EU officials said Monday there were indications Israel may agree to relax its blockade of Gaza by opening at least one border crossing to large-scale commercial traffic.EU diplomats also said Israel would likely drop its restrictive list of goods permitted into the region, which has left the territory's 1.5 million Palestinians mired in poverty.Instead, there would be a short, agreed list of items banned because of Israeli security concerns, the diplomats said on the condition that they not be named because of the sensitivity of the talks.

International mediator Tony Blair will brief EU foreign ministers at a summit beginning Thursday. Spain, which holds the rotating EU chairmanship, said Saturday it would propose the bloc exert strong diplomatic pressure on Israel to end the closure.Associated Press Writer Eileen Shim contributed to this report.

42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.

Arab chief on landmark visit calls for breaking Gaza siege by Sakher Abu El Oun - Sun Jun 13, 3:23 pm ET

GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – Arab League chief Amr Mussa on Sunday called for Israel's four-year siege of the Gaza Strip to be broken as he made a landmark visit to the impoverished Palestinian enclave. The visit, Mussa's first to Gaza as League secretary general, came as appeals mounted for an end to the blockade after Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish activists during a raid on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza on May 31.This blockade, which we are all here to confront, must be broken and the position of the Arab League is clear, Mussa said after being welcomed at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt by officials from many Palestinian factions. Not only the Arabs, but the entire world should stand with the Palestinian people against the siege of Gaza and what is happening in the occupied territories, especially east Jerusalem, he said of Jewish settlement growth in the annexed Arab half of the city.It was the first time that Mussa visited the besieged coastal strip since becoming head of the 22-member pan-Arab organisation in 2001, although he visited Gaza in the 1990s when he was Egyptian foreign minister.Gaza's Hamas rulers hailed the visit by Mussa, the most senior Arab leader to set foot in the Palestinian enclave since the Islamists' landslide win in parliamentary elections in 2006.This is an official Arab step on the way to breaking the siege, Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya told reporters at his home in Gaza City's Shati refugee camp after meeting Mussa there. We hope that there will be concrete results from this visit,he added.

The 10-hour visit, announced shortly after the flotilla raid, was also aimed at reviving reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas' secular Fatah movement, which was driven from Gaza in June 2007.Reconciliation is the basic and principal question. It is a question of will and not a mere signature -- it's a will, it's a policy, it's a position that translates into an agreement on all issues, Mussa told reporters.History does not halt before a sentence here or a paragraph there.Egyptian efforts to broker a unity deal between the two main Palestinian movements collapsed in October 2009 when Hamas refused to sign an agreement backed by Cairo and Fatah. On Sunday, Mussa toured some of the areas most devastated by Israel's December 2008 assault on Gaza, in which some 1,400 Palestinians were killed and thousands of homes were seriously damaged or destroyed.

Thirteen Israelis were killed during the 22-day war, which was launched to stem years of near-daily rocket attacks from the territory.Mussa also visited the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees and met the leaders of various Palestinian factions, including Fatah, before returning to Egypt.Gaza's 1.5 million inhabitants have been under a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade imposed on the territory in June 2006 after militants captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, now 23 years old, in a deadly cross-border raid. The blockade was tightened a year later after Hamas seized control of the enclave, with Israel and Egypt sealing the territory off from all but basic humanitarian aid and strictly limiting travel in and out.Two weeks ago, a six-ship flotilla carrying 10,000 tonnes of supplies tried to break the blockade and reach Gaza, but was stormed by Israeli naval forces in a raid that sparked global outrage. The widespread fury over the blockade had a galvanising effect on Cairo, which quickly moved to reopen the Rafah crossing days later, allowing travellers and humanitarian aid to pass, but not commercial goods.
Israel has said the closure is necessary to prevent Hamas from importing weapons, and insists the humanitarian needs of Gaza's people are met by the dozens of truckloads of basic goods it allows in most days.

Iranian aid ships head for Gaza
JUNE 14,10

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran is sending aid ships to blockaded Gaza, state radio said Monday -- a move likely to be considered provocative by Israel which accuses Tehran of arming the Palestinian enclave's Islamist rulers, Hamas. One ship left port Sunday and another will depart by Friday, loaded with food, construction material and toys, the report said. The boats would be part of international efforts to break Israel's isolation of the Gaza Strip.Until the end of the Gaza blockade, Iran will continue to ship aid, said an official at Iran's Society for the Defense of the Palestinian Nation. While Israel has long suspected Iran, which rejects the Jewish state's right to exist, of supplying weapons to Hamas, Tehran says it only provides moral support to the group.Israeli troops two weeks ago boarded a flotilla of Turkish aid ships heading to Gaza on May 31 and killed nine pro-Palestinian activists, most of them Turks.Public opinion in Muslim countries was outraged by the killings. An official of the Iranian Red Crescent Society's youth organization said some 100,000 Iranians had volunteered as potential crew for aid ships, Iran daily reported.A senior Iranian official said earlier Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards were ready to provide a military escort to aid ships heading to Gaza if Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei so commands. But the Guards' deputy head, Hossein Salami, said there were no plans to do so. Such a thing is not on our agenda, he was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency Monday.

Any such military mobilisation would risk a major confrontation with Israel, which fears Iran's nuclear enrichment program is aimed at developing atomic bombs. The Jewish state regards Iran's nuclear ambitions as a mortal threat. Iran says its nuclear program is meant solely to yield electricity or isotopes for medicine and agriculture.(Writing by Robin Pomeroy; Editing by Mark Heinrich)
