TIME TO SHUT DOWN THE FEDERAL RESERVE

DOCTOR DOCTORIAN FROM ANGEL OF GOD
then the angel said, Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all,(WORLD SOCIALISM) both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

Time to shut down the US Federal Reserve? Ambrose Evans-Pritchard
London Telegraph June 30, 2010

Like a mad aunt, the Fed is slowly losing its marbles.Kartik Athreya, senior economist for the Richmond Fed, has written a paper condemning economic bloggers as chronically stupid and a threat to public order.Matters of economic policy should be reserved to a priesthood with the correct post-doctoral credentials, which would of course have excluded David Hume, Adam Smith, and arguably John Maynard Keynes (a mathematics graduate, with a tripos foray in moral sciences).Writers who have not taken a year of PhD coursework in a decent economics department (and passed their PhD qualifying exams), cannot meaningfully advance the discussion on economic policy.
Don’t you just love that throw-away line decent? Dr Athreya hails from the University of Iowa. The response of the untrained to the crisis has been startling. The real issue is that there is an extremely low likelihood that the speculations of the untrained, on a topic almost pathologically riddled by dynamic considerations and feedback effects, will offer anything new. Moreover, there is a substantial likelihood that it will instead offer something incoherent or misleading.

You couldn’t make it up, could you? Economics is hard. Really hard. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mind-boggingly hard it is. I mean you may think doing the Sunday Times crossword is difficult, but that’s just peanuts to economics. And because it is so hard, people shouldn’t blithely go shooting their mouths off about it, and pretending like it’s so easy. In fact, we would all be better off if we just ignored these clowns.I hold my hand up Dr Athreya and plead guilty. I am grateful to Bruce Krasting’s blog for bringing this stinging rebuke to my attention. However, Dr Athreya’s assertions cannot be allowed to pass. The current generation of economists have led the world into a catastrophic cul de sac. And if they think we are safely on the road to recovery, they still fail to understand what they did.Central banks were the ultimate authors of the credit crisis since it is they who set the price of credit too low, throwing the whole incentive structure of the capitalist system out of kilter, and more or less forcing banks to chase yield and engage in destructive behaviour. They ran ever-lower real interests with each cycle, allowed asset bubbles to run unchecked (Ben Bernanke was the cheerleader of that particular folly), blamed Anglo-Saxon over-consumption on excess Asian savings (half true, but still the silliest cop-out of all time), and believed in the neanderthal doctrine of inflation targeting. Have they all forgotten Keynes’s cautionary words on the tyranny of the general price level in the early 1930s? Yes they have.

They allowed the M3 money supply to surge at double-digit rates (16pc in the US and 11pc in euroland), and are now allowing it to collapse (minus 5.5pc in the US over the last year). Have they all forgotten the Friedman-Schwartz lessons on the quantity theory of money? Yes, they have. Have they forgotten Irving Fisher’s Debt Deflation causes of Great Depressions? Yes, most of them have. And of course, they completely failed to see the 2007-2009 crisis coming, or to respond to it fast enough when it occurred. The Fed has since made a hash of quantitative easing, largely due to Bernanke’s ideological infatuation with creditism. QE has been large enough to horrify everybody (especially the Chinese) by its sheer size – lifting the balance sheet to $2.4 trillion – but it has been carried out in such a way that it does not gain full traction. This is the worst of both worlds. So much geo-political capital wasted to such modest and distorting effect.

Scrap dollar as sole reserve currency: U.N. report Louis Charbonneau UNITED NATIONS
Tue Jun 29, 2010 4:56pm

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A new United Nations report released on Tuesday calls for abandoning the U.S. dollar as the main global reserve currency, saying it has been unable to safeguard value. But several European officials attending a high-level meeting of the U.N. Economic and Social Council countered by saying that the market, not politicians, would determine what currencies countries would keep on hand for reserves. The dollar has proved not to be a stable store of value, which is a requisite for a stable reserve currency, the U.N. World Economic and Social Survey 2010 said. The report says that developing countries have been hit by the U.S. dollar's loss of value in recent years.Motivated in part by needs for self-insurance against volatility in commodity markets and capital flows, many developing countries accumulated vast amounts of such (U.S. dollar) reserves during the 2000s, it said.

The report supports replacing the dollar with the International Monetary Fund's special drawing rights (SDRs), an international reserve asset that is used as a unit of payment on IMF loans and is made up of a basket of currencies.A new global reserve system could be created, one that no longer relies on the United States dollar as the single major reserve currency, the U.N. report said. The report said a new reserve system must not be based on a single currency or even multiple national currencies but instead, should permit the emission of international liquidity -- such as SDRs -- to create a more stable global financial system.Such emissions of international liquidity could also underpin the financing of investment in long-term sustainable development,it said.

MARKETS DECIDE

Jomo Kwame Sundaram, a Malaysian economist and the U.N. assistant secretary general for economic development, told a news conference that there's going to be resistance to the idea.In the whole post-war period, we've essentially had a dollar-based system, he said, adding that the gradual emission of SDRs could help countries phase out the dollar.Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who previously chaired a U.N. expert commission that considered ways of overhauling the global financial system, has advocated the creation of a new reserve currency system, possibly based on SDRs.

Russia and China have also supported the idea.

But Paavo Vayrynen, Finland's Foreign Trade and Development Minister, told reporters that he doubted it was possible to make any political or administrative decisions how to formulate the currency system in the world. It is based on the markets, he said.I believe that the economic players in the market are going to have the decisive influence on that issue.European Union development commissioner Andris Piebalgs said it would be a bad idea to dictate what the reserve currency should be.
It is markets that decide,he said.Any intervention would just create additional challenges and make things even less predictable.

Dem Congressman: Dow Jones Will Plummet 1,000-2,000 if Financial Regulation Isn’t Passed Jeff Poor Business & Media Institute June 30, 2010

Today’s plunge in the U.S. financial markets is a cause of concern for a lot of people – but according to Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa., we haven’t seen anything yet if congressional Democrats don’t get their way.Kanjorski was asked if by CNBC’s Power Lunch co-host Tyler Mathisen if financial regulation relied too much on regulators themselves and not the power of law, which Congress has the authority to enact. Kanjorski said he would have preferred a tougher bill. However, call it political expediency, especially as financial regulation legislation has an uncertain fate, but Kanjorski warned if Congress didn’t pass financial regulation – the Dow would drop 1,000-2,000 points.I would have had preferred to have more rules, like the Volcker rule or like my amendment – the too big to fail rule embedded in the law so it was very clear and it was mandatory, Kanjorski said on the June 29 broadcast of Power Lunch. That was not accomplishable politically. We didn’t get any help to pass this bill from the Republican side, either in the House or in the Senate, and it’s interesting that they should complain about it. You know, I wish every one of them would ask the question and also the industry and media, what happens in this country if this bill fails? Do you think 236 points down on the Dow is surprising? Check 1,000 or 2,000 points if we fail to change the ways that caused this problem. That drew the ire of CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer. In his Stop Trading segment during the June 29 broadcast of Street Signs, Cramer blasted Kanjorski and said Congress was the problem.

You know, they are the problem,Cramer said. And we all know it, right? It’s like let’s not even outthink it. I love our bureaucrat congressmen in Washington, but they’re the problem. And I don’t want to be just Mr. Rick Santelli here, but give me a break.Cramer noted the timing – on the eve of a financial regulation bill vote and asked why he was waiting until now to tell us.I mean, really – so he’s telling us about the 2,000 points? Now he’s telling us? Cramer continued. I mean, like other than a couple of congressmen and senators. But according to Cramer, things are much more dire than the Washington, D.C. political playbook. He explained there was a real problem with the mentality in the federal government – to demonize profits.

What is the 10-year telling us? Cramer continued. We’re done. It’s 1934. I’ve been saying over and over on the show – the market’s overvalued, the market’s overvalued. Just try to buy a yield. It’s because, you know – we’ve had it. Washington has decided to eviscerate profits. No one wants to say this because what happens when you say it, is you got a bullseye on your back and I don’t even feel like saying it because I already have a ton of them. But you know it really is – I mean to like listen to Congress tell us about what causes a 2,000-point decline and then just accept it and say, Yeah, that’s interesting. I’m not playing that game. I’m too old.
Cramer said the problem was very complicated with what he said was a deflationary phenomenon. He explained there were very few positives with the S&P 500 index to point at what he deemed gloom-busters.We have radical deflation in this country, Cramer said. I mean, that’s what it is. People are maybe working, earning money off the books. I’m doing a series on the show. I’m trying to find companies that are gloom-busters. I gave combed most of the S&P 500, some of the S&P 600, you know the next level. I’ve got about four or five companies that say things are good. I mean, this is a remarkable time in the American economy. This market deserves to go down. Now I know a lot of people will say, Wait a second, it just rallied from 270.We’ve all played that game. We know what happens – the ultra-funds come in in the last half hour, they rebalance – you go down 500 in the last minute. Maybe it’s our fault. It’s our fault because of TARP or … whatever.

Global markets on cliff edge amid fears over European banks Jill Treanor and Nick Fletcher guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 29 June 2010 20.50 BST

Fears that government austerity packages will hinder global growth have combined with fresh anxiety about the health of European banks to hammer investor confidence.
Shares on both sides of the Atlantic dropped heavily amid warnings that markets were on a cliff edge.In jittery trading ahead of a crucial repayment by Europe's banks of a €442bn (£362bn) European Central Bank loan on Thursday the rates at which banks lend to each other in euros rose to their highest levels in eight months as rumours swirled that some banks were finding it difficult to raise funds in the money markets. The FTSE 100 has now fallen 14% since its April peak after losing 157.46 points to close at 4914.22, a 3% decline on the day and its lowest level since September last year. French and German markets lost about 3%. Wall Street was down 235 points by the time London closed, about 100 points below the 10,000 level.

Analysts will be looking tomorrowfor an indication of whether banks are becoming less reliant on their taxpayer lifeline when the ECB offers a way to refinance the €442bn one-year loan hours before the repayment is due.If banks ask for more than €300bn to repay their existing loans with the more expensive three-month money being provided by the ECB, then concerns about the health of the banking system will escalate, analysts said.Spanish finance minister Elena Salgado added to anxiety about the loan repayment by urging the central bank to heed the problems facing some Spanish banks. The ECB says it doesn't like governments to tell it what to do. I simply say I hope that on this occasion, as in others, the ECB will be aware of the needs of the Spanish financial system, she told Spanish radio. The publication of European-wide stress tests on major banks in a fortnight was also adding to the nerves while a bigger than expected fall in consumer confidence in the US prompted a debate about whether economies were heading for a double-dip recession. Oil prices fell 3% and the Baltic dry freight index, which measures demand, fell to its lowest level for nine months.Robert Talbut, chief investment officer at Royal London Asset Management, said: The European banks' funding issue is a real issue and it is coming to a head in part because the ECB is trying to withdraw some longer term facilities. A number of European banks, it is rumoured, are struggling to get funding in the wholesale markets and that is evoking memories of the dog days of 2008/9. Simultaneously it's unhelpful that [the economic] data is sending more mixed messages leading to more questions on the durability of the recovery.Today's fall means that in the past six trading days the FTSE 100 has lost about 380 points, wiping almost £100bn off the value of Britain's top companies.

Worries that European austerity measures would hamper recovery were augmented by signs that the Chinese economy – which economists hoped would take up some of the slack – was also cooling off while the fall in the widely followed confidence index in the US, to its worst level for seven months, comes ahead of important non-farm payroll figures on Friday – a gauge of the strength of the US jobs market. Investors were seeking safety as rates fell in the US bond market. The yield on the 10-year note dropped to 2.97%, the first time it has fallen below 3% since April 2009.Analysts at Royal Bank of Scotland were urging clients to position themselves for a economic downturn. We strongly believe that a cliff-edge may be around the corner, for the global banking system, particularly in Europe, and for the global economy, particularly in the US and Europe said Andrew Roberts, head of European rates strategy at RBS.Nick Parsons, head of UK and European research at National Australia Bank, said the scene was being set for a bout of great nervousness. It is inconceivable that tests on 100 banks can be published with the conclusion that all one hundred are fundamentally robust unless the assumptions behind the tests are relaxed to the point of nonsensical,Parsons said.Amid the market anxiety, the UK pulled off its largest ever offering of government debt through a syndicate prompting Robert Stheeman, chief executive of the Debt Management Office, to insist there the market for gilts remained attractive.

Hurricane Alex strengthens to Category Two
JUNE 30,10

LA CARBONERA, Mexico (AFP) – The first Atlantic hurricane of the year strengthened to a Category Two on Wednesday, as residents of the Mexican Gulf coast and south Texas braced for it to make landfall.Hurricane Alex rose one notch on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale late Wednesday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, after Mexico evacuated hundreds of people from fishing towns south of the US border.Alex has already disrupted oil clean-up operations off the coast of Louisiana, and US President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in Texas late Tuesday.Giant waves and strong winds were expected around the US-Mexico border as the storm churned westwards through the Gulf of Mexico, packing winds near 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour, according to the latest NHC report.Obama requested federal aid for relief operations after a hurricane warning was issued for southeast Texas and northeast Mexico.Texas Governor Rick Perry issued his own state disaster proclamation for 19 counties.Mexican authorities have already reported one storm-related death.

They evacuated some 2,000 inhabitants near the beach in the town of La Carbonera, close to where the storm was expected to hit overnight Wednesday.Further north in the city of Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas, the edge of the storm already brought torrential rain which flooded streets.Alex was some 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of La Pesca, Mexico and 105 miles (170 kilometers) south southeast of Brownsville, Texas, at 2100 GMT, according to the NHC.

The storm was well southwest of the area worst hit by the massive BP oil spill -- the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida -- though its strong winds have already caused problems for the cleanup effort. It was not forecast to turn towards the spill, but severe winds have churned up waves that halted some cleanup operations and threatened to push more of the huge slick onto shore. The NHC has warned that heavy rains could cause life-threatening flash floods, mud slides, and that ocean water could penetrate inland for several miles.Tornadoes were possible over southern Texas on Wednesday, the NHC added.Alex is the first Atlantic hurricane to form this early, in June, since 1995, according to the NHC.Alex has already killed at least 10 people in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador over the weekend.

Hurricane Alex strengthens ahead of landfall

MIAMI (Reuters) – Hurricane Alex strengthened into a Category 2 storm over the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and was due to hit northeastern Mexico very soon, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The Miami-based hurricane center said Alex, the first hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic storm season, was now packing sustained winds of near 100 miles per hour and on track to make landfall near the Texas-Mexico border in a few hours but well away from the U.S. Gulf oil patch.(Editing by Sandra Maler)

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Britain had driest start to year since 1929: forecasters
JUNE 30,10

LONDON (AFP) – Britain has had the driest first six months of the year for more than eight decades, weather forecasters said Wednesday, amid warnings the lack of rain was putting pressure on water supplies.Official figures from the Met Office forecasting service showed the average rainfall across the country between January and June was 356.8 millimetres. This made it the driest start to a year since 1929, when 275.7 millimetres was recorded, and the second driest for 100 years.Rainfall for the first six months of 2010 was well below the long-term average of 511.7 millimetres for January to June. The dry conditions have been caused by a lack of Atlantic weather systems, which usually cross Britain bringing bands of rain, especially to western parts, said the Met Office. These figures paint a graphic picture of why reservoirs in the west are so low by comparison with normal years, said Barrie Clarke, communications director at Water UK, the water industry body.During such a dry spell it makes sense to use water wisely wherever you live.

Tony Blair named winner of US Liberty Medal for peace work
JUNE 30,10

LONDON (AFP) – Former prime minister Tony Blair has been named as the 2010 winner of US award the Liberty Medal for his commitment to conflict resolution, his office said Thursday. The National Constitution Center, which awards the medal, praised Blair for his efforts as prime minister from 1997 to 2007 in Northern Ireland and Kosovo, and for continuing his work as a Middle East envoy since leaving office. The ex-premier takes his place alongside a host of well-known figures who have previously won the prize, including former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and ex-UN secretary general Kofi Annan. The National Constitution Center announced today that Tony Blair will receive the 2010 Liberty Medal in recognition of his steadfast commitment to conflict resolution, said a statement on the website of Blair's office. The former premier said he would give the 70,000-pound prize money to two of his charities.I am deeply indebted to the National Constitution Center for adding my name to such a distinguished list of recipients, said Blair.Former US president Bill Clinton, who is chair of the center, will award Blair the medal at a ceremony on September 13 at the center in Philadelphia. It was a privilege to work with my friend Tony Blair to help end 30 years of sectarian violence and broker a lasting peace in Northern Ireland, said Clinton. He added the pair also worked together to stop the killing in and mass exodus from Kosovo, and to develop policies that would improve living conditions for people in both our countries. But Blair remains a hugely divisive figure in his homeland, and the announcement of the award was met with scepticism from British commentators.Blair's peace efforts in the Middle East presumably don't encompass his support for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, said the Guardian. The Liberty Medal is awarded to people in recognition of their work for bringing about peace and was founded in 1988 to commemorate 200 years of the United States constitution.

Glenn Beck: I now know why Obama returned the Churchill bust to Britain
Posted by therightscoop in Politics on Jun 29th, 2010
|

Early in Obama’s tenure as President, he packed up the Churchill bust from the Oval office and returned the gift back to Britain. At the time many wondered why and I’m not sure many tried to answer it, but now Beck believes he has the answer:Barack Obama’s grandfather was imprisoned and brutally tortured by the British during the violent struggle for Kenyan independence, according to the Kenyan family of the US President-elect.Hussein Onyango Obama, Mr Obama’s paternal grandfather, became involved in the Kenyan independence movement while working as a cook for a British army officer after the war. He was arrested in 1949 and jailed for two years in a high-security prison where, according to his family, he was subjected to horrific violence to extract information about the growing insurgency.Mrs Onyango, 87, described how white soldiers visited the prison every two or three days to carry out disciplinary action on the inmates suspected of subversive activities. He said they would sometimes squeeze his testicles with parallel metallic rods. They also pierced his nails and buttocks with a sharp pin, with his hands and legs tied together with his head facing down, she said The alleged torture was said to have left Mr Onyango permanently scarred, and bitterly antiBritish. That was the time we realised that the British were actually not friends but, instead, enemies,Mrs Onyango said. My husband had worked so diligently for them, only to be arrested and detained.Beck believes this is huge in its implications and accuses the press of criminal negligence. I agree that the press was highly negligent of digging into Obama’s past, and he may be right that it explains almost everything, but it didn’t shake me as much as it appears to have shaken him. I know from watching Beck’s new chat feature that many were blown away by this revelation. Either way, you can decide how important this is. For me, at this point, it is quite interesting to know, but I find the 2010 elections and taking our country back much more important.

AND THE OTHER ISSUE WE MUST KEEP ON THE TABLE AND IN PEOPLES MEMORY IS THAT BARRY SOETORO IS REALLY BARACK OBAMAS REAL NAME AND HE WAS BORN IN KENYA NOT AMERICA.BARRY SOETORO AKA BARACK OBAMA IS NOT ELLIGABLE TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE USA GOVERNMENT.EVERYTHING HE SIGNS IN BARACK OBAMA IS ILLEGEL,BECAUCE HIS REAL NAME IS BARRY SOETORO.AMERICAS CONSTITUTION WILL BE IN SHAMBLES ONCE THIS SCAM IS FINALLY REVEALED TO THE WORLD.

BY THE TIMELINE IN OBAMAS OWN BOOKS-OBAMA WENT TO PAKISTAN ON HIS INDONESIAN PASSPORT.ANOTHER ISSUE OUT OF 400 PEOPLE AT COLUMBIA THAT GRADUATED THE YEAR OBAMA OR BARRY SOETORO DID,NO ONE COMES FORWARD TO SAY THEY KNEW HIM.HOW COME AT HAWAII HOSPITAL WERE OBAMA CLAIMS HE WAS BORN,NO NURSES OR ANYBODY CAME FORWARD TO SAY THEY WITNESSED OR TOOK PART IN THE BIRTH.THIS BARRY SOETORO OR AKA BARACK OBAMAS LIFE IS A COMPLETE FRAUD.AND AMERICA IS CONNED TO BELIEVE THE LIE.WHY WOULD SOETORO AKA OBAMA SPEND 2 MILLION DOLLARS TO STOP ALL THESE LAWSUITS IF THERES NO COVERUP.HE WOULD JUST SHOW THE PROOF OF EACH EVENT-PLACE OF BIRTH,CERTIFICATE AND REAL NAME BARRY SOETORO INDONESIAN PASSPORT.

Israeli, Turk hold secret meeting to mend ties By MATTI FRIEDMAN, Associated Press Writer – Wed Jun 30, 3:45 pm ET

JERUSALEM – An Israeli Cabinet minister met secretly in Europe with Turkey's foreign minister on Wednesday in an attempt to improve relations rapidly deteriorating over the recent bloodshed on a Gaza-bound flotilla, Israeli government officials said.

Industry Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in an unspecified location in Europe, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the government did not officially confirm the details.Ties between Israel and Turkey have worsened in recent years as Turkey's government has taken a more critical approach to a country that was one of its closest allies. Relations were dealt a blow last month when nine Turkish activists were killed by Israeli troops in a botched attempt to stop a protest flotilla trying — with the unofficial backing of Turkey's government — to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The meeting was meant to be secret but became public when it was reported Wednesday evening by Israel's Channel 2 TV. The station's reporter gave the location of the meeting as Zurich, Switzerland. The report drew an unusual and angry response from Israel's own foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, who said he was not informed and blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what he called a serious blow to the trust between them.

Lieberman, who is known for his blunt style, is a divisive figure at home and largely unpopular abroad and is widely seen to have been sidelined in foreign policy by Netanyahu.Lieberman's comment, in turn, led Netanyahu's office to release a statement confirming the meeting but explaining that it was initiated by the Turks and was unofficial. The statement did not name the Turkish participant and said the failure to inform Israel's foreign minister was due to an unspecified technical reason. There was no immediate comment from the Turkish government. In signs of the heightened tension between the two countries since the May 31 flotilla deaths, Turkey has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel and blocked some Israeli military flights in Turkish airspace. Israel, in turn, has expressed anger at Turkey's support of the flotilla organizers, charging that they are openly allied with Gaza's militant Islamic Hamas rulers.

Russian FM: CIA assessment on Iran not new
Tue Jun 29, 9:02 am ET

JERUSALEM – Russia's foreign minister is expressing little concern over U.S. claims that Iran has enough uranium to make two nuclear bombs within two years, saying the information is not new.Speaking in Israel on Tuesday, Sergey Lavrov responded to a new CIA assessment that Iran could produce the bombs by further enriching uranium it already has.Lavrov said the International Atomic Energy Agency has already said Iran has 2,000 kilograms of uranium enriched to a low level, enough for two bombs if further enriched.Lavrov said Russia hopes Iran would agree to stop uranium enrichment in return for receiving nuclear fuel from Russia.Lavrov's Israeli counterpart, Avigdor Lieberman, said Iran's nuclear program posed the biggest threat to Mideast stability.

Moody's puts Spain top rating on review for cut By Paul Day – Wed Jun 30, 6:09 pm ET

MADRID/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Moody's Investors Service said on Wednesday it is reviewing Spain's ratings and may lower them by as much as two levels due to sliding growth expectations and mounting fiscal challenges. The rating's agency, the only major agency that still maintains a top rating for Spain, said it was conducting a three-month review of the country's Aaa local and foreign currency government bond ratings. The rating agency also cited concerns over the impact of rising funding costs over the medium term.If at the conclusion of the review, Spain's ratings are lowered, it would most likely be by one, or at most two, notches, Moody's said.

Spain has been the target of intense speculation in sovereign debt markets as the next country in the euro zone to need European Union help after Greece, though the government has firmly denied it had any problem meeting financing obligations.
Moody's senior risk analyst Kathrin Muehlbronner said the review should not be taken out of context and Spain remained a highly rated country. The contagion has been so dramatic in the markets in the last few months people forget really what a gulf there is between Spain and Greece ... Spain is a very highly credit worthy country, Muehlbronner said in a telephone interview with Reuters following the announcement.

The policies that the government is now proposing to pursue should eventually reach in to the conscience of the market ... but the issue where the deficit and debt has increased and we're looking at a situation that is somewhat more difficult to unwind than it was before.Spain's had a public deficit of 11.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2009 while the debt-to-GDP ratio stands at around 55 percent, which Moody's said it expects it to rise to 80 percent of GDP by 2014.The government announced in early June a 15 billion-euro ($18.35 billion) savings plan to help cut the deficit to 3 percent of GDP by 2013, though the rating's agency said low growth forecasts would make this difficult.Moody's sees Spain's average growth at 1 percent over the 2010-2014 period compared to the government's projections of around 3 percent by 2013.Moody's believes that more fundamental adjustments to key spending items will be required in order to achieve the government's budget deficit targets, said Muehlbronner in a statement.

RISING COSTS

The cost to insure Spain's debt with credit default swaps had tightened earlier on Wednesday to 260 basis points, or $260,000 per year to insure $10 million in debt for five years, from 273 basis points on Tuesday's close, according to Markit Intraday.Spain's 10-year bono spread against the German bund stood at around 202 basis points late on Wednesday, off a recent high of 238 bps, but well above around 80 bps in April. The euro slightly pared gains versus the dollar after the Moody's announcement.Moody's said one of the key reasons for the review was concern over the impact of rising funding costs in the medium term as reforms of the labor market, the banking system and the pension system took time to restore investor confidence.

The labor market reform is currently in parliament for review, and Muehlbronner said she hoped legislators would strengthen the bill, which aims to make hiring and firing easier and put more young people to work. Spain suffers the highest level of unemployment in the euro zone at over 20 percent, while more than 40 percent of those under age 25 available for work are unemployed. On the banking system restructuring process, which the Bank of Spain said on Tuesday was close to completion, the analyst said she did not think the government would need to recapitalise the banks much more than had been already earmarked. We don't expect that there is a massive extra recapitalisation need for the banks above what the government has stated, and hopefully the stress tests that come out will help calm the markets,Muehlbronner told Reuters. The Bank of Spain has said it will publish a stress test for the banks soon. The consolidation of Spain's mostly unlisted savings banks could cost as much as 30 billion euros, the government has said, though the current round of bank mergers has tapped the bank restructuring fund for just over 10 billion euros so far.Investor nerves have also been tested over a Spanish debt redemption hump of 16.2 billion euros by the end of July. The government claims they will not need to tap the market to meet the repayment, but there are concerns they will struggle to meet payments. We don't see July's redemption as being a problem, Moody's senior analyst Kristin Lindow told Reuters.Fitch Ratings cut Spain's credit ratings to AA-plus, the second highest level, from AAA on May 28, saying its economic recovery would be more muted than a government forecast, pushing world equities and the euro lower. The downgrade followed a cut by Standard & Poor's in April.(Additional reporting by Walden Siew, John Parry and Karen Brettell)

13 Timeless Finance Tips From The Bible By Karen Anderson online colleges JUNE 30,10

It is a common misconception among non-Christians that the world of God and the world of money do not intersect. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, the Bible has over 1,000 verses that discuss money. In this article, we’ll discuss thirteen timeless pieces of financial advice straight from the Bible, as well as give you the actual Scripture references. Read on and discover (or rediscover) what God has to say about your financial life.

1. Make a budget so that you can anticipate your expenses ahead of time.

Luke 14:28-30 says this: For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he may have enough to finish it; lest perhaps, after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all those seeing begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish.

Don’t be one of those people who spends foolishly at the beginning of the month and doesn’t plan ahead for the expenses you will have later on. When you make a good budget, you won’t always be worrying about how you’re going to make it to your next paycheck.

2. Be honest without fail in your financial dealings and never try to cheat others.

Proverbs 13:11 says: Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, but the one who gathers by labor increases it. Proverbs 16:8 says: Better is a little with righteousness than great income with injustice.

Even though it may seem justified to be dishonest if you are in financial difficulty, especially if you think you won’t get caught, remember that it pays to do things the right way. Always conduct your business with integrity, even if it means making less money.

3. Be content with the things that you have.

Philippians 4:11-13 says: For I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances may be. I know now how to live when things are difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous. In general and in particular I have learned the secret of eating well or going hungry of facing either plenty of poverty. I am ready for anything through the strength of the One who lives within me.

Paul’s letter to the Philippians illustrates the principle of contentment that is a hallmark of simple living. Choose to be content with the things you have, and you will focus on the things in life that are truly important, rather than on possessions. You will also be less likely to purchase things impulsively when you are living a contented lifestyle.

4. Don’t be afraid of having success in your life.

Deuteronomy 30:9 says: The Lord your God will then make you successful in everything you do. He will give you many children and numerous livestock, and he will cause your fields to produce abundant harvests, for the Lord will again delight in being good to you as he was to your ancestors.

Some well-intentioned Christians believe that because God tells us in the Bible that we should not love money, God does not want us to enjoy financial success and freedom. However, this is not the case. God is happy when you are successful, says the scripture above. Your abundant harvest can be used to help others in need and to help His kingdom on earth.

5. Pay off your debt as soon as possible.

Proverbs 22:7 says: The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower becomes the lender’s slave. 2 Kings 4:7 says: Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.

Even though we have a hard time avoiding debt entirely, the Bible tells us that we should get into debt with careful consideration, realizing that we lose some measure of freedom when we owe others money. When we do get into debt, we should pay it off as quickly as we can.

6. Avoid co-signing for other people.

Proverbs 6:1-2 says: My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor, have given a pledge for a stranger, if you have been snared with the words of your mouth, have been caught with the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor!

Proverbs 22:26-27 says: Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.

Co-signing for others is serious business. If you aren’t sure if your friend or relative will be able to pay off the loan, you would be left holding the bag if they stop paying. And then you would either have to pay or you would be harassed by bill collectors. Your good name and good credit could also be ruined. These are all good reasons to support the Biblical idea that you shouldn’t co-sign for anyone else.

7. Don’t fall prey to get-rich-quick schemes.

Proverbs 13:11 says: Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.

Proverbs 14:15 says: The naive believes everything, but the sensible man considers his steps.

It seems to be common sense, but get-rich-quick schemes are just that, schemes. They don’t really work, and the surest way for someone to lose money in the Internet Age is to believe some website that tells you I make thousands of dollars a day with Google or Get Paid To Take Surveys! Even more sobering is the warning that ill-gotten gains will dwindle away. Just think of how many people making risky trades on Wall Street suffered when the market collapsed in 2008.

8. Be a cheerful giver, remembering the blessings you have been given.

Luke 6:38 says: Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.

Acts 20:35 says: In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Even when we feel like we are struggling financially, there’s a good chance that someone else is having an even harder time of it. That’s why we should always strive to give freely, in the spirit that everything we have comes from God. We should feel happy to contribute even a small amount to others in need.

9. Seek wise counsel when you prepare to invest your money.

Proverbs 15:22 says: Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.

If you send your dog to the veterinarian, your child to the pediatrician, and your car to a mechanic, why wouldn’t you ask an expert for advice when it comes to investing money? Too many people think they can read a few articles online and learn everything there is to know about investing. Then they end up making costly mistakes that a wise financial counselor might have helped avoid.

10. Freely lend your money to those who need it, without worry of being repaid.

Matthew 5:42 says: Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

Luke 6:35 says: But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.

This kind of advice might sound a little crazy to modern ears. However, giving freely when others ask us, provided that we have the money, is something that God wants us to do. Jesus preached a radical message of showing love for everyone, even the people you don’t like or trust. In these passages from the Gospels, he takes it a step further and says that you should extend this kind of “extreme generosity” to anyone who asks you for help. The rewards of showing such kindness may indeed be great.

11. Do not place money in a place of importance above God and your family; do not treat money as an idol.

1 Timothy 6:9-11 says: But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.

This scripture reminds us not to place too much importance on money. It’s okay to work hard and enjoy the fruits of your labor, but when work and obsessing about money start to get in the way of your happiness, it’s not okay anymore. This scripture in many ways could be about work-life balance.

12. Plan for the future by saving your money wisely.

Proverbs 6:6-8 says: Go to the ant, o sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in the harvest.

Proverbs 13:16 says: A wise man thinks ahead; a fool doesn’t, and even brags about it!

Saving for the future is not only a smart financial strategy, it’s biblical. By planning ahead for lean times and strategically putting money away, you make a safety net that just might come in handy. All of us are guaranteed to have emergencies like needing to get the car fixed and things like that. However, too many of us rely on credit cards, payday loans, or even pawn shops to get us through those times. Only by saving ahead of time can we prevent ill-advised borrowing.

13. Pay your taxes.

Romans 13:5-7 Therefore you need to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are servants of God’s service, attending continually on this very thing. Give therefore to everyone what you owe: taxes to whom taxes are due; customs to whom customs; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul reminds them that following God doesn’t mean to reject the laws of the political world. It is important to be a good citizen in whatever country you live. That means paying taxes as required by law and following the other laws. Also, by paying your taxes on time, you’ll avoid being audited and paying penalties and interest.

BP relief well weeks away as hurricane hinders cleanup By Kristen Hays and Tom Doggett – Wed Jun 30, 3:45 pm ET

HOUSTON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A relief well that might divert the gushing Gulf of Mexico oil leak is still weeks from completion, a top U.S. official said on Wednesday, as the season's first Atlantic hurricane disrupted cleanup efforts.U.S. lawmakers also took a step toward making oil companies face unlimited liabilities from offshore spills like the one devastating the Gulf coast.Hurricane Alex was delaying BP Plc's plans to boost containment capacity at its leaking undersea well and threatening to push more oil-polluted water onto U.S. shores.A relief well, one of two being drilled, is less than 1,000 feet from its target but will still take several weeks to reach the spewing oil pipe, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told U.S. lawmakers.Salazar's timetable was in line with BP's own statements, but there had been speculation earlier this week that the relief well link could be established earlier. The Gulf oil spill disaster is in its 72nd day, with environmental and economic costs to tourism, wildlife, fishing and other industries mounting and the future of BP, the London-based energy giant, far from clear.

Salazar said he is working hard to finalize a new offshore drilling moratorium after a federal court struck down the administration's initial six-month ban, but he would not say when the new moratorium would be issued. We believe the moratorium was correct when we put it in place. We believe it is still correct, he said, and suggested drilling would be allowed in well-known offshore fields.Gulf residents braced for heavy rains and flooding from Alex, which strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane late on Tuesday and could become a more powerful Category 2 on Wednesday. The storm was on track to make landfall near the Texas-Mexico border.

INTERNATIONAL HELP

With strong winds and waves as high as 12 feet on the way, officials said controlled burns of oil on the ocean, spraying of dispersant chemicals and booming operations were on hold. The State Department said it would accept offers of help from a dozen countries and international agencies to contain and clean up the spill, including two high-speed skimmers and a fire containment boom from Japan.A U.S. Senate committee voted on Wednesday to eliminate limits on liability that oil companies would face for oil spill damages. Companies currently enjoy a $75 million cap for compensating local communities for economic losses and cleaning up environmental damage. The change, if approved and enacted into law, would apply retroactively to BP. Democrats in both the Senate and House of Representatives have made the legislation a top priority. But some Republicans say it will stop small U.S. companies from drilling and open the door to more big foreign operators. The Gulf of Mexico holds the most promising untapped crude oil reserves in the United States, and a string of major discoveries over the past decade by companies including BP have rejuvenated investment in deeper and more difficult waters.BP has said it will cover all costs of its Gulf oil spill. It has agreed to establish a $20 billion fund, but claims are expected to easily eclipse that sum.Separately, the new head of the U.S. agency overseeing offshore drilling told lawmakers a record of bad performance, deadly performance by an oil company should be considered relevant when the government decides on drilling lease awards. It is simply unacceptable for companies to repeatedly misreport production, particularly when it interferes with the auditing process, said Michael Bromwich, who heads the Interior Department's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement.

It was formerly known as the Minerals Management Service. In what may signal a generally tougher approach to BP and other oil companies, the Interior Department said on Wednesday it fined BP a civil penalty of $5.2 million for submitting false, inaccurate, or misleading reports for energy output on Native American tribal lands in Colorado. BP's market capitalization has shrunk by about $100 billion since its Deepwater Horizon drilling rig sank in 5,000 feet of water on April 22, two days after an explosion and fire killed 11 workers. The company's shares have lost more than half their value since the spill but were up about 4 percent in New York afternoon trade on Wednesday, following sharp gains in London. The PHLX Oil Services Sector index rose on the day as well, but is down nearly 19 percent since the start of the spill. The stock prices had really discounted a very negative scenario ... the reality is not as bad as what the market has priced in, said Eric Marshall, director of research at Hodges Capital Management in Dallas, Texas. That has probably created a window of opportunity in a lot of these areas,he said.

ALEX HITS CLEANUP

On the Gulf coast, rough weather linked to Hurricane Alex had not only stopped some cleanup work but threatened to force evacuation of workers and vessels such as vacuum barges. If you have to move all this equipment out and then back in again, how much time is lost there? said Phil Ramon, a disaster management consultant in Belle Chasse, La.Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser has warned coastal workers they may not be able to take everything with them. You might just have to nail it down and then get out,he told Reuters.A flood watch put in place by the National Weather Service remained in effect for much of the region on Wednesday.

Winds out of the southeast are forecast through Friday, a development expected to push oil farther into Barataria Bay, on the west side of the Mississippi River. Winds may also push oil closer to barrier islands around Mississippi and Alabama.

162 cases of illness linked to oil spill reported in LouisianaBy the CNN Wire StaffJune 28, 2010 7:41 p.m. EDT

Most of those who reported sickness were either workers on oil rigs or people involved in cleanup efforts.STORY HIGHLIGHTS-Louisiana report says 162 people have reported illnesses-128 of those were workers in the Gulf and the rest from the general public-Symptoms included throat irritation, shortness of breath, coughing
Most were between the ages of 18 and 64.

(CNN) -- Exposure to the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has resulted in 162 cases of illnesses reported to the Louisiana state health department, according to a report released Monday. Of those cases, 128 involved workers on oil rigs or individuals involved in the oil spill cleanup efforts, the report said.Among the most common reported symptoms were throat irritation, shortness of breath, cough, eye irritation, nausea and headaches, according to the department's oil spill surveillance report. The weekly report gathers data from a surveillance network of doctors, clinics, emergency care locations and medical facilities.According to the most recent report, since the beginning of the oil spill, of the workers who reported illnesses, 120 were male and eight were female. Of the general public affected, nine were male and 25 were female. Most of those who reported symptoms were between the ages of 18 and 64, the report said. There were six illnesses reported the week of June 20, a sharp decrease from a high of 38 reported illnesses the first week of June, the report said.Several of the workers who fell ill reportedly had been exposed to fumes from the dispersants being deployed in the Gulf, the report said. Most of those affected worked on the cleanup efforts in some way. Twenty-three of those with symptoms worked on an oil rig, the report said. Most workers went to an emergency room or an urgent care center when they developed symptoms. At least 21 people were briefly hospitalized. In a related development, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine asked Monday that BP pay $10 million to fund six months of mental health services to people affected by the spill. There exists anger, anxiety and uncertainty among the families and communities affected by the spill, which will easily manifest into addiction and various forms of mental health crisis if not confronted,he said in a letter to BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles.

Teams have counseled almost 2,000 people in affected areas, and are reporting increases in anxiety, depression, stress, grief, excessive drinking, earlier drinking and suicidal ideation, he said. These are early warning signs of developing substance abuse and dependence, mental illness, suicide and familial breakdown including divorce, spouse abuse and child abuse and neglect. In a separate request, Catholic Charities is seeking $3.2 million for six months of mental health services, he said in the letter, which asked Suttles to respond within a week.

Storm could slow oil spill cleanup from far away By TOM BREEN and MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, Associated Press Writer - 6 40AM JUNE 29,10

NEW ORLEANS – The tropical storm plowing across the Gulf of Mexico could send oil skimmers back to port and make containment booms useless, even from far away. But the rough weather also might give nature a hand in breaking down crude from the massive oil spill.Waves churned up by Tropical Storm Alex could help break up the patches of oil scattered across the sea, and the higher-than-normal winds that radiate far from the storm could help the crude evaporate faster. Forecasters said Monday they didn't expect the center of Alex to pass near the site of BP's busted well. The oil isn't in one solid sheet. It's all broken up into patches anyway. It will actually work to break those patches down, said Piers Chapman, chairman of the oceanography department at Texas A&M University.Alex could send high winds and rough seas — perhaps as high as 12 feet — rippling across the Gulf. Skimming vessels operating far from the storm's center may be idled because they can't operate in such swells. Floating oil-containment booms could be rendered useless by waves slopping over them and may have to be pulled out of the water.Pulling boats and crews off the water could cost precious time, said Nancy Kinner, co-director of the Coastal Response Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. Equipment has to be stripped down, packed and protected from the force of the storm, and then has to be reassembled and deployed again, she said.

But Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the federal government's point man for the spill response, said the storm wasn't expected to affect two relief wells being drilled, considered the best hope of plugging the leak.Even 12-foot waves aren't enough to stop the tanker that is sucking up large quantities of oil through the cap on the well, or a second vessel that is burning off hundreds of thousands of gallons at the surface, Allen said.Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal also said Monday that the weather could push the oil farther into the ecologically delicate Barataria Bay, home to a diverse group of wildlife.Other officials echoed that worry. Rough seas already have forced barges to leave their posts as a barrier against the oil near the bay. We've already lost over 68 days of decent weather and this is going to be an active hurricane season,Jefferson Parish Council Chairman John Young said Monday. They're going to start coming yet there continues to be a lack of a sense of urgency. For now, Alex is on track to stay well away from the spill before making landfall with hurricane-force winds near the U.S.-Mexico border, possibly by Thursday. We are watching very, very closely, Allen said.As it stands right now, absent the intervention of a hurricane, we're still looking at mid-August for completing the relief well. Earlier Monday, a BP executive said the well would be done by early August. All of the uncertainty of what Alex and other storms could do to BP's containment effort gave new urgency to the company's efforts to make its operations at the well as hurricane-resistant as possible.

The company said it hopes to install a new oil-capturing system by next week that would allow BP to disconnect the equipment faster if a hurricane threatens and hook it back up quickly after the storm passes. Right now, BP would need five days to pull out if there is a hurricane. The new system being developed, which uses a flexible hose, would cut that to two days. The containment system now in place is capturing nearly 1 million gallons per day from the well, which is spewing as much as 2.5 million gallons a day, according to the government's worst-case estimate. In other developments, BP said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that the catastrophe has cost it $2.65 billion so far. The oil giant has also said it would set up a $20 billion fund to compensate people and businesses for their losses. BP has lost more than $100 billion in market value since the deep-water drilling platform it was operating blew up April 20, killing 11 workers.Associated Press writers Harry R. Weber in Houston, Brian Skoloff in Pensacola, Fla., Michael Kunzelman and John Flesher in New Orleans contributed to this report.

BP And Obama Benefit From Oil Leak Continuing By Dr. Tim Ball Monday, June 28, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

When is President Obama going to deal with the real pollution? How much longer can he essentially ignore the oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico? How many times can he repeat the scientific falsehood about carbon pollution causing global warming? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says CO2 is the cause not carbon. An increase in atmosphere carbon would result in cooling. Carbon from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons is called soot and that blocks sunlight. CO2 is not a pollutant but a natural gas essential to life. In a speech to Congress Obama linked the falsehood with his goal. He asked them “to send me legislation that places a market-based cap on carbon pollution and drives the production of more renewable energy in America.BP and the Obama administration have no interest in stemming the oil leak because it provides opportunities for their objectives. If they consider the leak serious as they profess they would focus all efforts to stop the flow. Direct some attention to restricting the spread of oil, but only after all effort is made to stop it at source.

BP’s Amateur Inadequate Attempts At Stopping Leaks
Solutions to stop the flow are readily available yet they insist the only solution is a relief well that won’t be ready until mid-August - with no guarantee. One amateurish effort after another fails because of problems well known in the industry or to those familiar with deep-water conditions. The dome designed to cover the well with a capacity to pump oil to the surface was completely inadequate. It quickly clogged as methane crystals formed.Methane crystal formation is well known and alleviated by heat. Why wasn’t adequate heat provided? Apparently the dome was designed for a flow of 5000 barrels a day (bd), which is a good estimate because flow rate is critical to the operation and profitability of a well. Increase in flow to an estimated 50,000 bd is not surprising and not necessarily due to early deception by BP. Once the well casing and concrete containment were bypassed the force of the emerging liquid eroded and increased the vent thus increasing flow. (Source)If the small dome is a standard technique why wasn’t a much larger dome used then or since? This could include inverting an oil barge large enough to hold a day’s flow with vents in the top. They tried to cut the wellhead pipe and place a connector over it with little success. Why wasn’t a submersible sent down? Humans operating at depth must be better than remote operation from a surface ship. Why haven’t they attempted to stop the leak with nuclear explosions as experts recommend and the Russians have used.

If nuclear is considered too risky why not regular dynamite as other experts suggest?

Assistance offered by other countries and private citizens are either deliberately turned away or effectively ignored. The Biloxi Sun Herald reported on June 27, 2010 No skimmers in sight as oil floods into Mississippi waters. But this is just one part of a wider failure. The single truth that has come out of this calamity is how woefully unprepared the oil industry and U.S. government have been in dealing with the oil spill.Obama’s administration has done nothing to improve the situation while acting to make it worse by stopping all drilling for six months. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, frustrated by the Federal failures, was at the front line showing true leadership.

Benefits of Failure For BP, Obama And Friends
The level of incompetence displayed by BP and the Federal government in dealing with the spill goes beyond incompetence. There was incompetence but on such a massive scale it was clearly aided and abetted by deliberate strategies. But why would they do this? What do they expect to gain? Obama’s administration provided billions of dollars to Petrobras the state owned Oil Company of Brazil to help them develop deep water offshore drilling. Meanwhile he has put a moratorium on US drilling and plans to fight a court order against the ban. As one report notes,Americans are right to wonder why Mr. Obama is underwriting in Brazil what he won’t allow at home. That investment was in early 2009. In August 2008 Billionaire investor George Soros bought an $811 million stake in Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) in the second quarter, making the Brazilian state-controlled oil company his investment fund’s largest holding. Later that year we learn, …the stake in Petrobras…made up 22 per cent of the $3.68 billion of stocks and American depositary receipts held by Soros Fund Management.Discovery of a massive oil field in Brazil’s deep water raised profit potential and demand for deep sea drilling rigs. By May 2008 Petrobras had tied up 80% of deep -water rigs. By 2009 it became a problem for Petrobras as well. Brazil is suspending auctions of new exploration blocks until at least 2009 because the industry lacks the equipment needed to expand, Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao said today in an interview. The affiliations between Soros and Obama are well documented. So is Soros’ support of many left wing organizations such as Moveon.org. The hypocrisy of these people protesting fossil fuels while making millions from them is typical. BP benefits from limits on Gulf drilling and regulations because they will move their oil operations to other less regulated countries. Robert Heilbroner saw multinationals as a form of parasitic state that would lead to a progressive erosion of national sovereignty. If they didn’t like the rules of one state they move to a more favorable opportunity. BP is happy to move to more profitable and less restrictive regions.

They also plan to expand their green energy business. As their web page states, BP, one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies, is looking beyond traditional energy choices….With over 35 years of experience and installations in over 160 countries, BP Solar is one of the world’s largest solar companies. To date BP Solar’s modules installed worldwide will offset more than 14 million metric tons of CO2 during their lifetime.BP is perfectly poised to reap the benefits of the massively subsidized renewable energies Obama urged Congress to support by legislating against carbon pollution. No wonder Obama didn’t call BP CEO Tony Hayward and urge he stop the oil flow. They had nothing to say, they are both using the oil spill to advance political and economic agendas. There is no other explanation for their incompetence that is so egregious it can only be premeditated.

Dictator Obama reaches Day 70 of his Gulf Destruction
By Sher Zieve Monday, June 28, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

Although Barack Hussein Obama may not have pulled the trigger on the BP Gulf oil rig explosion, his abrogation of sand berms and virtually all other means to minimize the damage from the toxins and protect this US coastal region places him the position of destroyer-in-chief.Through his actions involving apparent criminal mischief leading to the destruction of entire ecosystems and their attendant wildlife—including but, not limited to human life and livelihoods—Obama has placed himself firmly in the position of the most destructive and vicious leader of the USA that America has ever witnessed. And what has The Obama done to warrant such a statement? Let’s take a look.

1. Obama’s federal government refused to allow any foreign skimmers to assist in collecting the gushing oil that had surfaced. Note: The tyrant initially cited the Jones Act (Merchant Seaman Protection and Relief) as his excuse—an act sponsored by unions and initially passed to protect merchant seaman from having to compete with foreign entities in US waters. Suffice it to say, this act has been suspended numerous times by true US presidents in times of emergency. Obama, however, had his excuse for additional and total destruction of a large portion of the United States of America and was unwilling to give it up

2. Obama’s insistence that studies be affected (aka foot-dragging and fiddling while the Gulf States are decimated’) before anything would be done to assist the disaster-impacted Republican-run states of Louisiana and Mississippi. Note: Florida may be given a pass as soon-to-be former Florida Republican Governor Charlie Crist, now running as an Independent in the Florida Senate race, is giving strong indications that (if elected) he will vote with the Democrats

3. Obama orders Louisiana to stop protecting itself from the oil onslaught by ceasing the building of sand berms. Apparently, these sand berms were operating too effectively for the Obama. They worked so, Obama has ordered their building be stopped. Note: Obama gave Louisiana a death sentence and the dictator expects Governor Jindal and the rest of Louisiana’s residents to accept their deaths for the dictator and a suppressive to all humans Obama Cap & Trade bill!

In no uncertain terms, Obama is showing all of us that he has decided and is now demanding that OUR country be destroyed. He’s doing it all over the USA from more and more Obama massive land grabs resulting in displaced persons, to his refusal to protect a US State—notably Arizona—from illegal invasion. Instead, with Arizona he is not only bringing the entire US government to bear against the State (with a lawsuit) for attempting to protect itself from massive Mexican drug cartels and other illegals that cannot be sustained by the system but, is now siding with the enemy country. Obama has encouraged Mexico to file a lawsuit against Arizona for the State’s attempting to uphold the laws of our land, while he has ordered the ObamaGov not to uphold them.

Article II, Section 4 of the US Constitution reads:The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. I strongly suggest that what Obama has effected constitutes the high crime of treason against the USA and its citizens. Again, if he is allowed to continue with his behaviors (please note that as he is allowed more and more latitude and with no one stopping him he seizes more and more power away from us all) the United States of America may very well end before any November elections can be held. If our representatives in Washington D.C. still refuse to assist their own country against this depot and his minions, again We-the-People are required by the original Declaration of Independence to take back our government and our country.A method to begin our take-back needs to start on the local level. One of my readers (Debbie) said she and a small group are going door-to-door in their respective neighborhoods to advise neighbors of what is going on with our now tyrannical federal government and asking for their help. She tells me that the initial response has been very encouraging and that the local movement is growing. Debbie wrote: My motto has become I can’t save the world, but maybe I can save my neighborhood. That is what a few of us are doing, going door to door—engaging in issues in a very polite way, talking to people and doing what we can because that is still our right as Americans. I can’t tell you what a good feeling it is to stop and talk to a young man doing yard work and ending up with a new volunteer because he is fed up too! Debbie also says that all you need is a clipboard, paper and a pen. This is the beginning and it needs to start in neighborhoods and communities across this great nation before Obama & Co steal it from us completely and we become their slaves. It must begin today in communities all over the country.

In addition to TEA Parties, we must have volunteers on a street-by-street basis with local leadership dispensing vital information on what to do and what to have on-hand in the now almost visible and upcoming major additional Obama man-made emergency; a to-be-created emergency that he seems bent upon employing against We-the-People. My instincts tell me that this Obama-manufactured emergency will be coming VERY soon. Therefore, it behooves us all to begin the neighbor-to-neighbor and neighborhood-to-neighborhood process now. We must provide ourselves with any and all available knowledge and shields from the onslaught that is to come. There is protection in ORGANIZED numbers, folks. And the organization needs to begin with your next door neighbor and grow from there. And as We-the-People grow to extraordinary numbers and become more and more organized, we must prepare ourselves for the inevitable take-back of OUR country. Godspeed! Hidden Dangers In The Gulf - Fact or Fiction
By JR Dieckmann Monday, June 28, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

While the media have been focusing on the damage from the oil spill to the Gulf waters and coastline, they have been ignoring what could be an issue of far greater consequence. This oil leak could be unstoppable and in fact could become much worse - according to rumors. How hard could it be to simply bolt a new valve to the wellhead flange then close the valve to seal off the well? Certainly not a permanent solution, but would stop the pollution of the Gulf until they are able to engineer a more permanent one.If some little known rumors are correct, then there is much we are not being told and BP has not shut down the well because they cannot. It’s not that it isn’t technically possible, it’s because capping that wellhead would rupture the well pipe and cause oil to flood out into the strata below the seafloor. Through erosion, the oil would erupt through the seabed creating a volcano like crater with an unimaginable and unstoppable amount of oil gushing out into the Gulf. The methane gas explosion that destroyed the Deepwater Horizon rig occurred at the surface, but it was not until BP tried to plug up the well with their top kill and junk shot methods that they discovered that the well pipe was fractured. With 100,000 to 150,000 psi of pressure from the oil, any attempts to plug up the wellhead would result in oil spewing out of the ruptured well pipe casing and into the seafloor. At least that is what the rumors are saying. But it gets worse. According to these sources, geologists have discovered a large gas bubble extending from 15 to 20 miles wide within the oil reservoir and just tens of feet from the well opening. It’s only a matter of time before that bubble migrates to the well, and when that happens, the gas will literally explode up the well pipe, essentially destroying the wellhead, enlarging the borehole and creating the same catastrophe that would happen if BP were to cap the well. Gasses can be observed escaping from the wellhead in the streaming videos from the ROVs.

In two of the rumors, they fear that if the gas erupts, the resulting bubble exploding to the surface would cause a tsunami, which would wash over the Gulf Coast for miles, washing over most of Florida, New Orleans, and other coastal communities. The resulting oil release would turn the Gulf into a dead sea. This is a worst-case scenario prediction, which also claims that because of erosion in the well pipe, it will likely happen within the next couple of months. The top hat that BP is now using to capture and suck up as much of the oil as they can appears to be an almost perfect fit around the wellhead flange. It should not be that hard to seal it to the flange if that is what BP wanted to do, then capture all of the oil up the riser pipe. Apparently, BP must feel that restricting the oil to a six-inch riser pipe would still create too much back pressure for the 21 inch well pipe to handle, so they keep it loose to allow excess oil and pressure to bleed off into the Gulf waters. This is why two new relief wells are being drilled to intersect the primary well near the bottom of the well pipe. They then hope to pump heavy drilling mud into the pipe from the bottom until the weight of the mud balances the pressure of the oil, and stops it from flowing up the well pipe. Then they plan to pump cement into the pipe to permanently seal it. This assumes that the force of the oil does not just blow the mud up the pipe and out the wellhead. If the rumors are true, then, according to the reports, a race is on between well pipe erosion and BP‘s relief wells. They could not predict who will win the race. One rumor claims that because of the explosion and resulting fracture of the down pipe, the wellhead is leaning over and will soon collapse due to its weight.Complicating the effort is the expected hurricane season, which even conservative meteorologists are expecting to be heavy this year. If a major storm is headed for the recovery area of the Gulf, BP will have to stop operations five days before it arrives, recover their equipment from the seafloor, and get their ships to safe waters. The wellhead will be left wide open to the sea.

In response to the first report, which was a guest comment by Dougr on The Oil Drum, a blog used by oil industry workers and professionals, the following was posted:This is a guest post from Oil Drum commenter shelburn, who is a retired manager for an offshore underwater service company. Shelburn also wrote a previous guest post related to the oil spill. - Gail.In this post, I would like to respond to a long comment made by DougR a few days ago, that has received a lot of publicity.First, I will say that in one area we are in complete agreement. BP and the USCG have been less than forthcoming, and in doing so have hurt both themselves and the general public as all kinds of wild rumors and technical misinformation abound. Some of this misinformation results in harm to individuals and businesses as people suffer increased stress and tourists cancel vacations. In this information vacuum, it is easy to make wrong assumptions that lead to mistaken conclusions. It can be made worse if you have some degree of technical knowledge and verbiage and use that to make a case for a scenario that doesn’t pass muster with actual engineering analysis but sounds highly authoritative to many people, some TV commentators and various politicians.I have to agree with Shelburne, and found some of the comments made by Dougr highly questionable. For example, when it is suggested that the oil reservoir will empty into the Gulf, the water pressure pushing down will then equalizes the oil pressure pushing up, and water will flood into the 500-degree reservoir causing a volcanic type eruption. This in turn will cause the seafloor to collapse into the reservoir.

Some of that may be true, but the seafloor collapsing into the reservoir? I don’t think so. In Dougr’s comments, this is the cause of the tsunami. I just cannot see a section four and a half miles thick of earth and rock suddenly shearing off and dropping without an 8.0 magnitude earthquake and a tectonic plate shift. I think Dougr has been watching too many underground nuclear tests at less than 1000 feet under the Nevada desert.Another point that Dougr makes is that sand and rocks are eroding the inside of the down pipe and the weight of the pipe and wellhead pressing down on the damaged section of the pipe will cause the wellhead to fall over . Not likely, since a mile or more of earth and cement support the pipe it is not standing in free air as Doug’s explanation suggests. Further, there is no evidence of, or reason for sand and rock to be coming up the pipe from the oil reservoir. The second report comes from an interview with Richard Hoagland on Brasscheck TV now posted in two segments on YouTube. Richard Hoagland claims to be a scientist who has been a long-term critic of secrecy and fraud at NASA.According to Richard C. Hoagland, insider sources in BP and in U.S. Government say that there is a Gas Bubble 15-20 Miles across 10+ feet high near BP’s oil well head in Gulf of Mexico. It may cause an explosion with apocalyptic proportions in weeks or months. The pressure at the well is 100.000 PSI and when the Gas explodes, it will be like Mt. St. Helens going off underwater. It will create a Cloud of Death and a Tsunami Wave traveling at 400-600 MPH sinking all Vessels around the area as well as drive all hazardous materials including the Oil inland.View the videos and make up your own mind to the credibility of this report, But also know that Richard C. Hoagland is known for his fringe thinking, paranormal interests, and as a conspiracy theorists. He is a writer who is not known to have ever worked as a scientist. I don’t know where he got his information, but it may have come from one of those glass bubbles on the moon.

Here are the videos, about 17 minutes total. An interesting theory from a conspiracy theorist.Cloud of Death followed by Tsunami - Part 1.Cloud of Death followed by Tsunami - Part 2.Considering the sources of these rumored reports, I have to conclude that they are quite extreme and probably not very credible. Having said that, there still exists the possibility that the down pipe really has been damaged and could be a serious problem. That would explain why BP has not sealed the well, or sealed the top hat to the well, and would also explain why BP was, for two days, checking the vertical alignment of the wellhead with an inclinometer. That much I have seen for myself in the streaming videos from the ROVs.It is also quite likely that a gas bubble does exist within the reservoir. Compressed gas is what creates the high pressure that forces the oil up the well pipe. Escaping gas can also be seen in the streaming videos from the ROVs.However, though the gas could erupt up the well pipe, it will not explode under water without oxygen and an ignition source. It very well could find them at the surface if the ships are still there. Otherwise, the gas cloud could be blown ashore and become deadly as it would hug the ground and displace the oxygen in the air. This sort of thing has happened before.

Former Shell Oil CEO John Hofmeister has confirmed that as a last resort, high explosives may be used to seal the well. Hofmeister also confirms that a small nuclear weapon is being considered but says he is not on board with that idea yet.

Explosives would be strategically placed below the seafloor and in close proximity to the borehole. In theory, the concussion and pressure from the blast would force earth and rock to crush the borehole and seal it. Hofmeister points out the danger of doing this as it has never been done before, and favorable results cannot be guaranteed. It could make the problem worse. The report on The Oil Drum from Dougr is very informative and educational if you are curious about what has been going on at the seafloor with the ROVs. However, I wouldn’t take his conclusions too seriously without further evidence. As with in any disaster, there are always going to be those who will spin stories that sound good but ultimately don’t pass the smell test. Those that mix fact with fiction are usually the most convincing.

BP spill costs up to $2.65B; denies CEO resigning By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN and VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press Writers - JUNE 28,10 9:30 AM

NEW ORLEANS – BP's mounting costs for capping and cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico spill have reached $2.65 billion, the oil giant said Monday, but the company denied reports out of Russia that CEO Tony Hayward is resigning. The company's expenses climbed $100 million per day over the weekend, according to an SEC filing Monday, as engineers eyed a tropical storm heading toward Mexico that was expected to miss the oil spill area but could still generate disruptive waves and winds. It was a rocky start to the week after BP PLC stock fall 6 percent Friday in New York to a 14-year low. BP has lost more than $100 billion in market value since the deep-water drilling platform it was operating blew up April 20, killing 11 workers and starting the massive leak that has fouled the coastline in four states.BP shares gave up some ground in London after the Hayward report emerged from Russia. But they were still up a fraction at 306.75 pence ($4.62) . BP's U.S. shares gained about 2 percent in premarket trading.British-based BP rushed to deny the report by Russia's state RIA Novosti news agency that a senior Russian Cabinet official had said Hayward was expected to resign as chief executive. It quoted Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who was set to meet Hayward on Monday, as saying that Hayward would introduce his successor.Hayward is leaving his post, he will introduce his successor,Sechin was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.BP spokeswoman Carolyn Copland in London said the report is definitely not correct. Sheila Williams, also in London, said, Tony Hayward remains chief executive. They are mistaken, U.S.-based BP spokesman Mark Proegler said of the Russian report.Hayward was to assure Russian officials of BP's viability and discuss issues related to Russian joint venture TNK-BP, which accounts for about a quarter of BP's reserves and production.Moscow-based oil analyst Konstantin Cherepanov from the Swiss investment bank UBS said he gave little credence to reports of Hayward's resignation.

I'm sure there has been a misunderstanding. Hayward's resignation at this time and in this place lacks logic, he said.It would make sense that Hayward would finish his job tackling with the oil spill and step down afterwards so that the new CEO wouldn't have his burden on his shoulders. In a filing Monday to U.S. securities regulators, BP said the cost of its response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill had reached about $2.65 billion, up from $2.35 billion as of Friday. The costs include spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to Gulf states, claims paid, and federal costs.BP said it had received more than 80,000 claims and made almost 41,000 payments, totaling more than $128 million.BP says the figure does not include a $20 billion fund for Gulf damages it created this month. In the Gulf, Tropical Storm Alex was forecast to strengthen and possibly become a hurricane Monday or Tuesday as its center crossed open water from Yucatan to Mexico's northeastern coast. That track is far from the area of the oil spill off Louisiana's coast. But the first tropical storm of what is expected to be an active Atlantic hurricane season will still generate waves up to 15 feet high and winds of 20 to 30 mph on its outer edges that could pound the oil spill area, said Stacy Stewart, senior hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. That could exacerbate the problem there in terms of pushing oil further inland and also perhaps hindering operations,Stewart said. Isachenkov and Nataliya Vasilyeva reported from Moscow. Associated Press Writers Harry Weber in Houston and Sofia Mannos in Washington also contributed to this report.

The Real Truth About BP and What is Happening in the Gulf

BP is engaged in criminal negligence. It only pretends to clean-up its mess when government officials arrive for photo-ops. BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama.BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg told reporters earlier this month: I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies are greedy companies or don’t care, but that is not the case with BP. We care about the small people.

Small people. Expendable people. The woman in this video tells us what is really happening in Louisiana. BP, Obama, and Congress — all beholden to large corporations and bankers — are sacrificing thousands of people and keeping it hidden. The corporate media talks about Florida’s beaches and lost tourism money. They talk about the marine animals covered in oil but not the children who are coming down with respiratory problems from toxic gases blowing in from the Gulf.Idiots on Fox and CNN trade barbs back and forth about Obama’s lack of leadership. It’s the Democrats say the Republicans. It’s the Republicans say the Democrats. Fingers get pointed while oil washes up in the salt marshes and deadly chemicals rain down on crops in Mississippi. People are beginning to talk about a new disease… Gulf of Mexico Syndrome. The petro-chemical-military-industrial complex is gassing Gulf Coast residents with poisonous Benzene and Corexit dispersant at dangerously high levels in the largest U.S. domestic military operation to date, writes Deborah Dupré.Human suffering in the Gulf is increasing from the world’s latest and largest toxic oil kill as BP lies and government remains silent about human health risks and associated military interventions. Most immediately damaging of the operation’s withheld information pertains to toxins breathed since the explosion.Near the end of the above video Kindra Arnesen talks about what toxins are doing to her children. Her story is likely not an isolated incident. Lots of children and old people with respiratory ailments are having problems with the air in Louisiana (and soon other Gulf states and Florida). The media is just not telling us about it. The media is owned by large corporations. The corporate media’s job is to distract with mindless fluff and cover up the crimes of the corporatists. If this continues much longer the military will be called in — not to evacuate people but to contain angry people who will ultimately organize and take things into their own hands. Violence and revenge cannot be ruled out.Can you blame them? Wouldn’t you do the same thing if BP destroyed your livelihood and poisoned your children?

Documents show vast cleanup of Plum Island land By FRANK ELTMAN, Associated Press Writer – SUN Jun 27, 8:30 am ET

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Government documents obtained by The Associated Press show extensive efforts since 2000 to remove vast amounts of waste and contaminants from Plum Island, site of top-secret Army germ warfare research and decades of studies of dangerous animal diseases.Yet some environmentalists remain concerned about the secrecy surrounding the 840-acre, pork chop-shaped island off northeastern Long Island — and they're dubious of any claims that pollution has been remedied. We are highly concerned that when the government acts alone they may not be doing the best job, said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment.Every government cleanup needs the public's involvement and independent oversight to ensure its validity. The Department of Homeland Security is preparing to sell the island 100 miles east of Manhattan and build a new high-security laboratory in Kansas to study animal diseases.Documents, some obtained by the AP under the Freedom of Information Law, reveal that hundreds of tons of medical waste, contaminated soil and other refuse have been shipped off the island for disposal. Other island sites have been cleaned in compliance with federal regulations, the reports indicate. Also, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined in 2006 that no munitions or ordnance remain from the Army base on Plum Island that once housed as many as 4,000 troops from the Spanish-American War through World War II. And as late as 2007, New York government inspection reports said there is no environmental threat on the island.Plum Island's remote location, restricted public access, and best-selling books have all helped fuel a mystique about what goes on there. It wasn't until the early 1990s that tours of the facility were given to the news media — about the time the government declassified files revealing secret germ warfare research there in the 1950s. The last media tour was in 2004.

Before the island, its ferry dock and mainland offices can be sold, the General Services Administration, which manages federal properties, is studying the environmental impact of the research activities. A draft is expected by summer's end and public hearings will follow. There has been some EPA investigation and remediation, said Bob DeLuca, president of the Group for the East End, which focuses on environmental issues. What has not been assessed — and what we have asked for is — what is the legacy of contamination? The Preserve Plum Island Coalition, a new consortium of more than two dozen environmental groups, opposes the sale. Spokesman John Turner said the island should not be developed because it is home to a number of endangered bird species and other wildlife. We want it (the sale) to be reversed, Turner said. We think there are very significant ecological, natural and cultural resources on the island. That's a view shared by author Nelson DeMille, who wrote a 1997 murder mystery with Plum Island as the backdrop. He says it would be best to close the lab and open a nature preserve.Democratic U.S. Rep. Timothy Bishop questions the wisdom of moving the lab to Kansas. He estimates the sale could fetch $50 to $80 million but says building the new facility would cost 10 times that much. DHS, which took over Plum Island operations in 2003, considered several locations, including Plum Island, before choosing a site at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.But questions remain; the Senate last year ordered DHS to study whether operating a lab and studying pathogens in the beef belt could imperil America's livestock industry. DHS has determined that an accidental release of foot-and-mouth disease would have a $4.2 billion impact on the economy, regardless of the lab's location.

A 2006 Army report noted how the Chemical Warfare Service researched pathogens in the 1950s that could be used for both defensive and offensive purposes on a variety of animals. The island was used because of federal laws banning germ warfare research on the U.S. mainland.Army records also indicate at least hog cholera virus and Newcastle disease, a virus of poultry and other birds, were field tested on Plum Island, but the report noted it was never clearly established how many other viruses the CWS may have used in their research.A former Plum Island administrator, David Huxsoll, told the AP that anthrax, a lethal disease affecting humans and animals, was studied for decades in the facility's bio-containment lab. The bacteria can form dormant spores able to survive long periods in the environment. Scientists have also studied foot-and-mouth disease, swine fever, and other foreign animal diseases.Gigi Gronvall, a senior associate at the University of Pittsburgh-based Center for Biosecurity, said there was little need to worry about any residual disease contamination.I'd say it's extremely unlikely that any pathogens could have been released,Gronvall said. Those labs are designed to be one of the barriers between the pathogens and the environment.A 2007 DEC letter confirmed the island's motor pool and nearly 20 other locations on the island had been cleaned to comply with the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. In some instances, sites were excavated and contaminated soil was removed to landfills. DEC spokesman Bill Fonda added that between 2000 and 2007, some 970 tons of medical waste — material that could not be burned in one of the lab's incinerators — was taken from 10 Plum Island sites to landfills in Pennsylvania.Another building which DEC says was certified as clean was Building 257, the subject of the 2004 best-selling book Lab 257 by attorney Michael Carroll. He believes Plum Island's mysterious past inspired the move to Kansas. Plum Island raised too many red flags, Carroll said.I think that's why they decided to pick up and move somewhere else.Associated Press Investigative Researcher Randy Herschaft in New York City contributed to this report.

Oil spill's psychological toll quietly mounts By JANET McCONNAUGHEY and MITCH STACY, Associated Press Writers – Sun Jun 27, 6:52 pm ET

NEW ORLEANS – The Gulf of Mexico oil disaster feels far worse to shrimper Ricky Robin than Katrina, even though he's still haunted by memories of riding out the hurricane on his trawler and of his father's suicide in the storm's aftermath. The relentless spill is bringing back feelings that are far too familiar to Robin and others still dealing with the physical and emotional toll wrought by Katrina five years ago.I can't sleep at night. I find myself crying sometimes, said Robin, of Violet, a blue-collar community on the southeastern edge of the New Orleans suburbs, along the highway that hugs the levee on the Mississippi River's east bank nearly all the way to the Gulf.Psychiatrists who treated people after Katrina and have held group sessions in oil spill-stricken areas say the symptoms showing up are much the same: Anger. Anxiety. Drinking. Depression. Suicidal thoughts.Everybody's acting strange, said Robin, 56. Real angry, frustrated, stressed out, fighting brothers and sisters and mamas and family.Fishing families, the backbone of the coastal economy, are especially hard-pressed as the waters that make up their livelihood are sporadically closed because of fears the oil will taint fish, oysters and shrimp.

Oil field workers, whose salaries are among the best the region can offer, worry about their industry's long-term future. And there is still the rebuilding after Katrina, which in August 2005 devastated a swath from Louisiana to Alabama — almost as big as the area affected by the oil — killing more than 1,600 and forever changing the region's relationship with the water. No one is fishing any more out of Zeke's Landing Marina in Orange Beach, Ala., though most charter boat captains are making some money pulling boom and doing other jobs in BP's cleanup program.

Looking at oil all day can be harder than staying home, said Joe Nash, a boat captain there. Seeing everything that you've been used to for years kind of slowly going away from you, it's overwhelming,he said.Because you can't do anything about it.That helplessness, coupled with the uncertainty about what's going to happen with the spill and when the next check from BP PLC will arrive, leaves boat captain George Pfeiffer angry all the time. Our families want to know what's going on, said Pfeiffer, 55, who keeps two charter boats at Zeke's Landing. When we get home, we're stressed out and tired, and they want answers and we don't have any.His wife cries, a lot.I haven't slept. I've lost weight, said Yvonne Pfeiffer, 53. My shoulders are in knots. The stress level has my shoulders up to my ears.Social services agencies have not seen a significant increase in people seeking help since the spill began, but that doesn't mean the need isn't there, said Jeffrey Bennett, executive director of the Gulf Coast Mental Health Center in Gulfport, Miss., whose state saw oil wash up on the mainland for the first time Sunday.Unfortunately, the people most affected, shrimpers and fishermen, are not people who traditionally seek mental health services, Bennett said. They're kind of tough characters, and look at being depressed or not being able to handle their own problems as weakness. On Sunday evening, many in Alabama's coastal fishing community planned to attend services for a popular charter captain who committed suicide on his docked boat. Authorities had no way to know whether his death had anything to do with the spill, but they hoped it would move others to seek help.John Ziegler, a spokesman for the Alabama Department of Mental Health, said no one had walked into counseling centers set up in fishing communities since the disaster. Then on Friday, two days after the captain's death, five people came in saying they needed help because of the spill.

As news of the captain's death spread east to Pensacola, Fla., Baptist Health Care's Lakeview Center publicized its 24-hour help line, and several calls about the spill came in the following day. People saying they were sad, they were angry, they were grieving, they have lost a lot, marketing director Tish Pennewill said. Grandmothers talking about how they took the children to the beach for the summer and could no longer do that. People wondering if it was ever going to be the same.Even people whose livelihoods aren't affected by the spill find themselves crying on beaches, like Nancy Salinas, who was on Pensacola Beach last week when Florida officials closed it because oil was washing up. It just breaks your heart, she said. I can't get my feet in the water.Mental health professionals say it is too early to have reliable data to understand the full severity of stress issues spawned by the spill.

However, their work so far indicates the problem is taking root, and the backdrop of Katrina means it is likely to get worse. Tropical systems such as the one that swirled over the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday won't help matters, even though it was forecast to bypass the spill. This is a second round of major trauma for children and families still recovering from Katrina. It represents uncharted territory, said Dr. Irwin Redlener, director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University and a member of the National Commission on Children and Disasters who has worked with Katrina survivors. Dr. Howard Osofsky, chair of the psychiatry department at LSU Health Sciences Center, said focus groups he's monitored in spill-affected areas confirmed those emotions. Ziegler, the Alabama mental health chief, said counselors have gone out to marinas, docks and other places frequented by fishermen and others affected by the spill. They've had folks break down and weep, he said. They've had people share some of their deepest feelings about their future and how they're feeling now that things seem imminent. In Mississippi, Bennett's group is working with Catholic Social Services in Biloxi on a proposal to train people in fishing communities to work as peer listeners to try to identify people who might be having problems and encourage them to seek help. The social and psychological toll on residents of the Gulf will last long after the oil is cleaned up, say veterans of the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989. Every day you're dealing with this thing, said John Calhoun, former mayor of Homer, whose community was devastated. If you're not working on it, you're worrying about it. Frankly, they sold a lot of alcohol during this time. I saw some of the toughest guys I know break down in tears because the stress had gotten to them.Michael Herz, who served on the commission that investigated Alaska's spill, visited the Gulf and said it was like seeing it all over again, only worse. It took away livelihoods and it split families, he said. Some members of family took money from Exxon and others were so upset they didn't. The rate of mental health, spousal abuse, alcoholism all skyrocketed.Robin, the Louisiana shrimper, fears the spill will have similar effects on himself and his neighbors. This is a slow-moving hurricane,he said. You're looking at it, and you can't do nothing about it.Stacy reported from Orange Beach, Ala.
