Tucker Confirms Geithner Presence at Bilderberg Meeting

Intrepid Bilderberg investigator and reporter Jim Tucker of the American Free Press confirms that U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will attend this year’s Bilderberg meeting in Athens, Greece. Geithner’s presence will be in violation of the Logan Act, intended to prohibit American citizens without authority from interfering in relations between the United States and foreign governments. Congress established the Logan Act in 1799. The only Logan Act indictment occurred in 1803. It involved a Kentucky newspaper article that argued for the formation in the western United States of a separate nation allied to France. No prosecution followed.Tucker told Alex Jones today that Geithner will attend the secretive meeting to talk about global government. Geithner recently announced while addressing the Council on Foreign Relations that he supported a proposal to replace the dollar as the world’s reserve currency with a composite of currencies that would be managed by the International Monetary Fund.

Robert Zoellick was previously a managing director of Goldman Sachs, United States Deputy Secretary of State, and U.S. Trade Representative. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission and attended Bilderberg meetings in 1991, 2003, 2006 and 2007.

The comedian covering the Bilderberg meeting for the London Guardian has been detained by authorities in Athens, Greece after taking a photograph close to the site of the annual elite gathering.Charlie Skelton has also personally contacted the Infowars team to clarify his position and explain why he is approaching the issue from a comic angle.In Skelton’s third article in today’s Guardian, he details an encounter with armed Greek police close to the Astir Palace resort near Athens, during which he was menaced, asked to identify himself and was and eventually detained after photographing the sea view.Again the approach Skelton takes is a comical one, however, he maintains that his detainment was very serious:Over came the man with the machine gun. Over came the man with the special mirror-on-a-stick for car bombs. It was the first time in my life, and hopefully the last, that I’ve been intimidated by a mirror on a stick. They circled round me. One of them, the one in the photo with one hand up and the other on his pistol, kept prodding me in the shoulder, and shouting Give the camera! Just give the camera! All around me: Delete! Delete photos! followed by a lame tug of war for the camera with no great self-belief on either side, which I won.Then it became: Get in the car! Get in the car! I wasn’t about to get in the car. I remember saying: One of you has a machine gun, you’re shouting at me, I don’t understand why, I took one photograph, this all seems a bit strange. What’s going on here? Skelton says he was then taken to the police station and asked to delete his photo, which he refused to do. Eventually the police allowed him to leave.

From today until May 17, approximately 150 of the most influential members of the world's elite will be meeting behind closed doors at a hotel in Greece. They are called the Bilderberg Group or the Bilderbergers, and you have probably never heard of them.The group, co-founded by Prince Bernard of the Netherlands, has been meeting in secret every year since 1954. This year, says the British broadsheet The Times, they are meeting at the Nafsika Astir Palace in Vouliagmeni.The individuals at the meeting come from such power houses as Google and the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Senate and European royalty. Governments, the banking industry, big oil, media and even the world of academia are amongst the Bilderberg ranks.Those reportedly in attendance at last year's conference in Virginia include former U.S. senator Tom Daschle; Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner and his predecessor Henry M. Paulson; former U.S. secretaries of state Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice; Microsoft executive Craig Mundie; senior Wall Street Journal editor Paul Gigot; World Bank President Robert Zoellick and Google CEO Eric Schmidt.There is no official list of who's who in Bilderberg and there are no press conferences about the meetings. Bilderberg members continued to ignore my enquiries through the end of 1999 and into 2000. I continued dutifully to write to Bilderbergers, although I held out no hope of a breakthrough. And then, one Tuesday morning, the phone rang. It was the instantly recognisable voice of a Bilderberg founder member, for 30 years one of their inner circle, their steering committee, a Bilderberg agenda setter, a head-hunter - a secret ruler of the world himself, should you choose to believe the assorted militants I had spent the past five years with. It was Denis Healey.How can I help you? he said.Well, I said, would you tell me what happens inside Bilderberg meetings?
Okay,he said, cheerfully.There was a silence.Why? I said. Nobody else will.Because you asked me,he said. Then he added,I'm an old fart. Come on over.Once Lord Healey had agreed to talk to me - and I had circulated this information far and wide - other Bilderberg members became amenable, too (albeit on the condition of anonymity). These interviews enabled me to piece together the backstage mechanics of this most secret society.So this is how it works. A tiny, shoe-string central office in Holland decides each year which country will host the next meeting. Each country has two steering committee members. (The British ones have included Lord Carrington, Denis Healey, Andrew Knight, the one-time editor of The Economist magazine, and Martin Taylor, the ex-CEO of Barclays Bank.)

They say that each country dreads their turn coming around, for they have to raise enough money to book an entire five-star hotel for four days (plus meals and transport and vast security - every packet of peas is opened and scrutinised, and so on). They call up Bilderberg-friendly global corporations, such as Xerox or Heinz or Fiat or Barclays or Nokia, which donate the hundreds of thousands of pounds needed. They do not accept unsolicited donations from non-Bilderberg corporations.Nobody can buy their way into a Bilderberg meeting, although many corporations have tried. Then they decide who to invite - who seems to be a Bilderberg person. The notion of a Bilderberg person hasn't changed since the earliest days, back in 1954, when the group was created by Denis Healey, Joseph Retinger, David Rockefeller and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (a former SS officer while he was a student - ironic that a former Nazi, albeit a low-ranking and half-hearted one, would help give birth to an organisation that so many would consider to be evidence of a Jewish conspiracy).

First off,said a steering committee member to me,the invited guests must sing for their supper. They can't just sit there like church mice. They are there to speak. I remember when I invited Margaret Thatcher back in 75. She wasn't worldly. Well, she sat there for the first two days and didn't say a thing. People started grumbling. A senator came up to me on the Friday night, Senator Mathias of Maryland. He said, This lady you invited, she hasn't said a word. You really ought to say something to her. So I had a quiet word with her at dinner. She was embarrassed. Well, she obviously thought about it overnight, because the next day she suddenly stood up and launched into a three-minute Thatcher special. I can't remember the topic, but you can imagine. The room was stunned. Here's something for your conspiracy theorists. As a result of that speech, David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger and the other Americans fell in love with her. They brought her over to America, took her around in limousines, and introduced her to everyone.I remember when Clinton came in 91, he added. Vernon Jordan invited him along. He used it as a one-stop-shop. He went around glad-handing everyone. Nobody thought they were meeting the next president.(Of course, Jim Tucker would contend that they all knew they were meeting the next president - for they huddled together that weekend and decided he would be the next president.) At times, I become nostalgic for when I knew nothing. There are so few mysteries left, and here I am, I presume, relegating Bilderberg to the dingy world of the known. The invited guests are not allowed to bring their wives, girlfriends or - on rarer occasions - their husbands or boyfriends. Their security officers cannot attend the conference and must have dinner in a separate hall. The guests are expressly asked not to give interviews to journalists. Rooms, refreshments, wine and cocktails before dinner are paid for by Bilderberg. Telephone, room service and laundry bills are paid for by the participants. There are two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions, except on the Saturday, when the sessions take place only in the evening so that the Bilderbergers can play golf. The seating plan is in alphabetical order. It is reversed each year. One year Umberto Agnelli, the chairman of Fiat, will sit at the front. The next year, Norbert Zimmermann, chairman of Berndorf, the Austrian cutlery and metalware manufacturer, will take his place. While furiously denying that they secretly ruled the world, my Bilderberg interviewees did admit to me that international affairs had, from time to time, been influenced by these sessions.I asked for examples, and I was given one: During the Falklands war, the British government's request for international sanctions against Argentina fell on stony ground. But at a Bilderberg meeting in, I think, Denmark, David Owen stood up and gave the most fiery speech in favour of imposing them. Well, the speech changed a lot of minds. I'm sure that various foreign ministers went back to their respective countries and told their leaders what David Owen had said. And you know what? Sanctions were imposed.The man who told me this story added,I hope that gives you a flavour of what really does go on in Bilderberg meetings.

That isn't a conspiracy! That is the world. It is the way things are done. And quite rightly so.He added, "But I will tell you this. If extremists and leaders of militant groups believe that Bilderberg is out to do them down, then they're right. We are. We are against Islamic fundamentalism, for instance, because it's against democracy.

Isn't Bilderberg's secrecy against democracy, too? I asked.

Nobody is going to speak freely if they're going to be quoted by ambitious and prurient journalists like you who think it'll help your career to attack something that you have no knowledge of. I noticed a collection of photo albums on his mantelpiece. Denis Healey has always been a keen amateur photographer, so I asked him if he'd ever taken any pictures inside Bilderberg.Oh yes, he said. Lots and lots of photographs. I eyed the albums. Actually seeing the pictures, seeing the set-up, the faces, the mood - that would be something.

2009 Hurricane Season Forecasts: TWC hurricane and wave expert, Dr. Steve Lyons, provides us with a perspective on the early forecasts for 2009 and how one might interpret them. -- If I could tell you with 100% certainty a hurricane will strike your coast on September 10, 2009, would you do anything between now and then? Obviously no one can make such a forecast with any skill. So you should be ready, ready just as well every year for a potential hurricane strike. Eventually one will come to your coast, it could be in 2009 or it may be 100 years from now, but the potential for great disaster requires you to be ready just like when you put on your car seat belt each time you start your car, never expecting to get in a crash.

2009 listing of Atlantic basin storm names. They are maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. Six lists are used in rotation. The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity.Five Toes of the Hurricane Footprint: Dr. Lyons writes about his frustration pertaining to the limitations of the Saffir-Simpson scale.What seems to be confusing everyone these days is that many news groups portray the damage footprint using only the Saffir/Simpson hurricane category, probably because it is simple and all broadcasters can talk about a number from 1 to 5, and probably because they do not have models to forecast each toe of the hurricane land footprint. It turns out that hurricane rainfall, hurricane coastal wave heights, hurricane related tornadoes, and hurricane WATER RISE are each very poorly related to the Saffir/Simpson scale and to each other. The Saffir/Simpson scale was originally intended to be a wind damage scale and nothing more!

Hurricane Rainfall Patterns (Part 1): Rainfall patterns (intensity and longevity) associated with tropical cyclones over land is a difficult forecast for the meteorologist. Dr. Lyons explains the complexities.One of the most difficult tropical cyclone (tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane) land impacts to forecast accurately is its rainfall. Because rain is highly variable in space and its patterns constantly change through time, forecasting where rain will fall, how fast it will fall, how much will fall and who will get flooded are very difficult forecasts indeed!

Preoccupation with Hurricane Maximum Winds: To sum up Dr. Lyons' frustrations with the Saffir-Simpson scale, he couldn't place his feelings in just one blog. When you listen to Dr. Lyons and his argument(s), you realize it's a no-brainer that we need more than just the SS scale when trying to classify hurricanes.I write this blog partly in frustration of seeing people (often through media reports) being preoccupied with a hurricane's maximum winds. Now don't get me wrong maximum winds are important for impacts at the immediate coastline, but they alone cannot be used to paint a clear picture of what coastal and inland impacts will be. Impacts include wind, waves, water rise and rainfall with a few tornadoes possibly mixed in! Maximum wind is directly responsible for wind damage the other impacts are more complex and some have little to do with landfall intensity. This is where the problem lies; people very often take action or are asked to take action based on that Saffir-Simpson scale classification for a specific hurricane.What Causes Hurricane Surge on the Coast?: It's one of more (if not the most) dangerous aspect of landfalling hurricanes. Dr. Lyons delves into the topic and answers some frequently asked questions concerning surge.I know you have all heard of storm surge, the term used to describe some of the water rise on the coast from a tropical storm or hurricane. Here I will call it surge because most of the time it is worst for hurricanes, not storms. KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Officials say one person is dead after severe storms, including a tornado, raked northeastern Missouri.State Emergency Management Agency Susie Stonner (STOH'-ner) says she had no details on the fatality in Adair County on Wednesday evening. Stonner says there are reports of injuries in the Kirksville-Novinger (NAH'-vin-jer) area, but she had no details.Stonner says the storm left several people trapped in basements.The National Weather Service reported at least a dozen homes damaged or destroyed in the Kirksville area. An auto dealership in Kirksville sustained significant damage.U.S. 63 also was closed in the Kirksville area because of a gas line leak and downed power lines.

In February, the pharmaceutical company Baxter International sent vaccine material contaminated with H3N2 flu viruses to 18 countries. The contaminated product, which Baxter calls experimental virus material,was made at a research facility in Orth-Donau, Austria.

Critics have suggested that Baxter intentionally contaminated the experimental vaccine materials in order to provoke a pandemic. Baxter has worked with governments around the world to develop and produce vaccines to protect against infectious disease or potential threats from bioterrorism. After 9/11 Baxter helped supply stockpiles of a smallpox vaccine and in 2003 the company was contracted to develop a vaccine to combat the SARS virus. In 2006 the UK Government announced plans designed to inoculate every person in the country with Baxter’s vaccines in the event of a flu pandemic,Steve Watson wrote on April 27.On May 7, Baxter confirmed that it received a strain of the swine flu virus and was taking all of the appropriate steps necessary to prepare for a large scale vaccine production,according to the Chicago Tribune.

The virus is made up of components from the human flu virus, avian flu virus, and swine flu virus, a combination not possible in the natural world. Government officials in France went to prison for allowing the drug to be distributed. The documents show that the FDA colluded with Bayer to cover-up the scandal and allowed the deadly drug to be distributed globally. During Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Bethlehem today, the pontiff did not address rampant Muslim persecution of Christians and stood by as Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas lied about the real reason behind local Christians fleeing. In a major address, the pontiff strongly supported a Palestinian state. Perhaps he does not realize recent history demonstrates such a state may lead to increased persecution and endangerment of Palestinian Christians. Mr. President, the Holy See supports the right of your people to a sovereign Palestinian homeland in the land of your forefathers, secure and at peace with its neighbors, within internationally recognized borders,Benedict said upon his arrival in Bethlehem, standing alongside Abbas.In Bethlehem, where the Christian population has dropped from a majority to less than 20 percent, Benedict delivered a special message of solidarity to the 1.4 million Palestinians isolated in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. My heart goes out to the pilgrims from war-torn Gaza: I ask you to bring back to your families and your communities my warm embrace, and my sorrow for the loss, the hardship and the suffering you have had to endure,the pope said in his address at an open-air Mass in Manger Square.Please be assured of my solidarity with you in the immense work of rebuilding which now lies ahead, and my prayers that the embargo will soon be lifted, he added.By referencing the war-torn Gaza and necessary rebuilding,the pope was apparently fingering Israel's recent 22-day confrontation with Hamas as the cause for the suffering Gazans had to endure.He said nothing, however, of the suffering of Gaza's 3,000 Christians since Hamas took over that territory in 2007. Benedict might well have decried the many bombings, shootings and other Islamist attacks against Gazan Christian establishments, the brutal murder of the territory's only Bible-store owner, or the regular intimidation and persecution of Christians there. His solidarity with Gazan Christians might have given them some much-needed strength.

Benedict, speaking from Bethlehem – the site of rampant Muslim persecution of Christians – did not once renounce the Islamic violence there, either. Instead, the pope stood beside Abbas as the Palestinian leader deceptively pointed to a concrete separation barrier in Bethlehem and blamed that barrier, as well as Israeli occupation,for the plight of Christians. In this Holy Land, the occupation still continues building separation walls,Abbas said.Instead of building the bridge that can link us, they are using the force of occupation to force Muslims and Christians to emigrate.It should be respectfully pointed out to the pope that Abbas was dangerously fabricating history. Actually, it was Abbas' own Fatah party that is causing Christians to flee. First, about the wall.Bethlehem is not surrounded by any wall. Israel built a fence, in 2002, in the area where northern Bethlehem interfaces with Jerusalem. A tiny segment of that barrier, facing a major Israeli roadway, is a concrete wall that Israel says is meant to prevent gunmen from shooting at Israeli motorists. The fence was constructed after the outbreak of the Palestinian intifada, or terror war, launched after the late PLO leader Yasser Arafat turned down an Israeli offer of a Palestinian state, instead returning to the Middle East to liberate Palestine with violence. Scores of deadly suicide bombings and shooting attacks against Israelis were planned in Bethlehem and carried out by Bethlehem-area terrorists, including Abbas' Fatah organization. At one point during the period of just 30 days in 2002, at least 14 shootings were perpetuated by Bethlehem cells of Fatah's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terrorists, killing two Israelis and wounding six.

Many times Muslim gunmen in the Bethlehem area reportedly took positions in civilian homes in the hilltops of Christian Beit Jala, which straddles Bethlehem. Beit Jala afforded the terrorists a clear firing line at southern sections of Jerusalem and at a major Israeli highway down below, drawing Israeli military raids and the eventual building of the security barrier there. Is this barrier causing Bethlehem's Christians to flee, as Abbas claimed today? Simple demographic facts will answer this question. Israel built the barrier five years ago. But Bethlehem's Christian population started to drastically decline in 1995, the very year Arafat's Palestinian Authority took over the holy Christian city in line with the U.S.-backed Oslo Accords.Bethlehem consisted of upwards of 80 percent Christians when Israel was founded in 1948, but since Arafat got his hands on it, the city's Christian population dove to its current 23 percent. And that statistic is considered generous since it includes the satellite towns of Beit Sahour and Beit Jala. Some estimates place Bethlehem's actual Christian population as low as 12 percent, with hundreds of Christians leaving every year.As soon as he took over Bethlehem, Arafat unilaterally fired the city's Christian politicians and replaced them with Muslim cronies. He appointed a Muslim governor, Muhammed Rashad A-Jabar and unilaterally disbanded Bethlehem's city council, which had nine Christians and two Muslims, reducing the number of Christians councilors to a 50-50 split. Arafat then converted a Greek Orthodox monastery next to the Church of Nativity, the believed birthplace of Jesus, into his official Bethlehem residence.Suddenly, after the Palestinians gained the territory, reports of Christian intimidation by Muslims began to surface, reports the pope would do well to note since they may foreshadow what is to come under a Palestinian state.Christian leaders and residents in Bethlehem told me they face an atmosphere of regular hostility. They said Palestinian armed groups stir tension by holding militant demonstrations and marches in the streets. They spoke of instances in which Christian shopkeepers' stores were ransacked and Christian homes attacked.

In the past, they said, Palestinian gunmen fired at Israelis from Christian hilltop communities, drawing Israeli anti-terror raids to their towns. In 2002, dozens of terrorists holed up inside the Church of the Nativity for 39 days while fleeing a massive Israeli anti-terror operation. Israel surrounded the church area, but refused to storm the structure. Gunmen inside included wanted senior Hamas, Tanzim and Brigades terrorists reportedly involved in suicide bombings and shooting attacks. More than 200 nuns and priests were trapped in the church after Israeli hostage negotiators failed to secure their release.Some Christian leaders said one of the most significant problems facing Christians in Bethlehem is the rampant confiscation of land by Muslim gangs.There are many cases where Christians have their land stolen by the [Muslim] mafia, said Samir Qumsiyeh, a Bethlehem Christian leader and owner of the Beit Sahour-based private Al-Mahd (Nativity) TV station. It is a regular phenomenon in Bethlehem. They go to a poor Christian person with a forged power of attorney document, then they say we have papers proving you're living on our land. If you confront them, many times the Christian is beaten. You can't do anything about it. The Christian loses, and he runs away,Qumsiyeh told me, speaking from his hilltop television station during an interview last year. Qumsiyeh himself said he was targeted by Islamic gangs, his home firebombed after he returned from a trip abroad during which he gave public speeches outlining the plight of Bethlehem's Christian population.One Christian Bethlehem resident told me her friend recently fled Bethlehem after being accused by Muslims of selling property to Jews, a crime punishable by death in some Palestinian cities. A good deal of the intimidation, she added, comes from gunmen associated with PA President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah organization.A February Jerusalem Post article cited the case of Faud and Georgette Lama, Christian residents of Bethlehem who said their land was stolen by local Muslims, but that when they tried to do something about it, Faud was beaten by gunmen.One religious novelty-store owner I met recently told me Muslim gangs regularly deface Christian property.We are harassed, but you wouldn't know the truth. No one says anything publicly about the Muslims. This is why Christians are running away.Meanwhile, Benedict's call for a Palestinian state would bring complete PA control over more territory in which Christians reside. Thus, his call, if implemented, may well result in even more Christian deaths, persecution and intimidation.

They cherished ideals such as the Cub Scout Promise and the Law of the Pack.Now the Boy Scouts have a new mission — fighting terrorism, rounding up illegal aliens, search and destroying marijuana fields, and embracing the SWAT mentality. The Explorers program, a coeducational affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America that began 60 years ago, is training thousands of young people in skills used to confront terrorism, illegal immigration and escalating border violence — an intense ratcheting up of one of the group’s longtime missions to prepare youths for more traditional jobs as police officers and firefighters,reports the New York Times.Homeland Security and the FBI are behind the effort to indoctrinate and train the Boy Scouts to become tomorrow’s Gestapo. WASHINGTON, May 13 (OneWorld.net) - European free trade policies will continue to drive up job losses in the European Union and worldwide, said a British social justice group following an European Union summit to address the economic crisis' impact on employment.While politicians continue to promote free trade policies as a solution to the current economic crisis, the advocacy group War on Want argues trade liberalization has and will continue to put millions of people in both rich and poor countries out of work. For decades, the EU has consistently pursued trade policies that have caused mass unemployment around the world and led us to financial meltdown, said Dave Tucker, trade campaign officer at War on Want. Now European workers are feeling the impact of these free trade policies. The EU must wake up and refocus on the needs of European people, not its corporations.A new report by War on Want found that the current free trade model has been responsible for the elimination of tens of millions of jobs worldwide over the last 20 years.We have to preserve free trade and competition, said Swedish Prime Minister Frederick Reinfeldt at the EU conference on unemployment and the financial crisis in Prague. These are very important to our economy.Joblessness in the 27-member bloc is expected to rise by almost 10 percent this year, reports the Chinese news agency Xinhua, noting that the May 7 summit resulted in 10 concrete steps to protect and boost employment amid the global financial crisis.Specifically,the actions [include] plans to keep as [many] people as possible in employment through temporary working hours adjustment, lowering non-wage labor costs, and improving the efficiency of national employment services.

After the two world wars, most of Europe and Japan was economically devastated, while the United States, which suffered less from the crippling effects of the wars, was economically dominant and was under pressure to open up its markets to other countries,writes BBC News in a guide to free trade. Subsequent international treaties beginning with the 1948 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) began to reduce and abolish import taxes and other barriers to trade. In 1995, GATT was superceded by the World Trade Organization (WTO), which has a membership of 142 countries, with 28 additional nations waiting to join. According to War on Want, this easing of trade restrictions has pushed down prices so [much] that local producers cannot survive, resulting in increasing poverty and unemployment worldwide. French economy minister denies interest in EU competition job

For her part, Ms Kroes said she would not run for a second mandate.The post is among the most influential in the commission, as the EU's executive arm rules on state aid issues, as well as on antitrust cases involving some of the world's biggest companies.The commission fined US microchip supplier Intel more than a billion euros for hindering competition in the biggest EU antitrust fine in history on the day the Die Welt article appeared.Securing the job for a French person would be a spectacular coup for President Sarkozy, as it would give France a central role in European economic politics,wrote Die Welt, with the country frequently having clashed with the commission over competition issues.Earlier in the day, French EU minister Bruno Le Maire said it was a harebrained hypothesis,while government spokesperson Luc Chatel said: It is not the media that name the EU commissioners, but it is the president of the republic who will choose the French person who will be in charge of representing our country within the next commission.

Ms Lagarde does her [current] job very well,he added.A commission spokesperson qualified the news as one of many speculations and stressed that the issue of the nominations for the next commission is currently not on the agenda.The composition of the next commission will not be known before its president has been agreed – something that will only happen after the 4-7 June European elections.But with Mr Barroso already having the backing of Europe's centre-right parties as well as of some Socialist governments, he is seen as likely to keep the top job for another five-year mandate.

More EU states heading for deficit action

The European commission adopted economic reports on Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Romania on Wednesday (13 May), signalling that the EU executive now considers their budget deficits in 2008 to have been in breach of EU rules known as the stability and growth pact.It is vital that we apply the stability and growth pact …and devise an adjustment path to correct deficits and debts in a timely way,said economy commissioner Joaquin Almunia.This is key to preserve the sustainability of public finances in the medium-to-long term,he added. Under the rules, EU member states are not allowed to run budget deficits in excess of 3 percent of their gross domestic product. Following Wednesday's decision, the reports will now be handed to a committee of financial experts whose opinion is taken into account before the commission asks EU finance ministers to endorse corrective measures for the four states at their next meeting in June. The states then have six months to adopt the necessary measures aimed at bringing down their budget deficits within a specific timeframe, deficits largely caused by falling tax receipts and expansionary fiscal policies in 2008.Malta for instance re-nationalised its shipyards last year at a cost of 1.3 per cent of GDP, whereas Poland increased income tax relief for families, as well as pension and social benefits.

The fallout

As a member of the euro area, Malta is the only one of the four countries that could in theory receive fines as a result of its excessive budget deficit, although the EU executive is quick to point out this has never happened in the past.We don't regard any talk of sanctions as helpful,commission spokesman Mark English told EUobserver.

Instead he describes the process as a multilateral surveillance system whereby member states put pressure on each other to reduce their deficits once the current economic crisis is over.Poland's excessive deficit appears to be having more direct consequences however. On Monday the country's finance minister, Jacek Rostowski, admitted that entry to the euro area was likely to be delayed by as much as one year as a result of the economic crisis and the government's deteriorating finances.

Poland had hoped to join the two-year waiting chamber, known as ERM-II, to the euro area this year, with a full shift to the common currency scheduled for 2012.The commission's decision follows a similar move by the EU executive in February regarding the excessive deficits of Greece, Ireland, Latvia and Spain. The UK and Hungary were already operating under the procedure prior to the onset of the financial crisis.

Eurojust chief embroiled in Portuguese corruption scandal

EUOBSERVER/BRUSSELS – The EU's judicial co-operation body, Eurojust, on Wednesday tried to distance itself from a scandal involving its head, Jose da Mota, who allegedly put pressure on prosecutors in order to stop a corruption probe involving Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates.For the time being, Eurojust does not want to comment on this case. It is a national case in Portugal and Eurojust is not involved in this case,Johannes Thuy, a spokesman for the Hague-based EU body told this website.

Portugal's general prosecutor on Tuesday launched a disciplinary procedure against Mr Mota following an internal investigation of alleged pressures on magistrates.The accusations were made in connection with a case pointing at Mr Socrates at a time when he was minister of enviroment and allowed the construction of an outlet shopping mall on protected land allegedly in exchange for kickbacks.Two magistrates dealing with the so-called Freeport affair last month accused Mr Mota of having tried to persuade them to side-line the investigation at the request of the premier and the minister of justice.The premier and Mr Mota's relationship goes back to the late nineties, when they worked in the same government as state secretaries for environment and justice respectively. In 2002, when the new EU body was formed, Mr Mota was transferred to Hague as Portugal's representative to Eurojust. He was elected head of the judicial co-operation body in 2007, at a time when the so-called Freeport case had already started.As head of Eurojust, Mr Mota not only represents the EU body in public events, but also chairs the internal meetings, such as the one last year when Portuguese prosecutors asked their British counterparts to hand them over the evidence collected in the Freeport case.If formally indicted after the disciplinary procedure which might last around 10 days, Mr Mota would most probably be replaced by someone else as Portugal's representative to Eurojust.These allegations are incredibly serious and, if proved, call into question the political independence and credibility of Eurojust,Stephen Booth from Open Europe, a London-based eurosceptic think-tank told this website.

Socrates to survive in elections

The Socialist Prime Minister, who currently holds an absolute majority in the Parliament, is set to be re-elected in September, despite some losses in the opinion polls due to the Freeport affair, pundits say. Mr Socrates is starting to fall in the polls and he will not manage an absolute majority like in 2005, but he will still win,Tiago Luz Pedro, political editor at Publico, one of Portugal's main newspapers, told EUObserver.British fraud investigators pointed at Prime Minister due to unexplained missing sums in the company's books, related to the period Freeport was bidding for a construction licence in Portugal in 2002, when Mr Socrates was minister of enviroment.The Socialist politician has constantly denied these accusations and claimed the scandal was politically motivated.

Guy Faulconbridge Print Story Russia may face wars on its borders in the near future over control of energy resources, a Kremlin document on security policy said on Wednesday.The paper did not name potential adversaries, but Russia, the world's biggest energy producer, shares a border of more than 3,600 km (2,250 miles) with resource-hungry China and a small sea border with the United States.In a competition for resources, problems that involve the use of military force cannot be excluded that would destroy the balance of forces close to the borders of the Russian Federation and her allies,said the document, which maps out Russia's security strategy until 2020.The attention of international politics in the long-term perspective will be concentrated on the acquisition of energy resources,the paper said.It said regions where such a competition for resources could arise included the Middle East, the Barents Sea, the Arctic, the Caspian Sea and Central Asia. Russia also sees increased competition for food, fresh water and land.The strategy document was approved by President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday and published on Wednesday by the Russian Security Council, which includes Russia's top politicians and intelligence chiefs and is chaired by Medvedev.Russia, the world's largest producer of gas and second biggest exporter of oil, sees these resources as a way to revive its clout as an energy superpower after the chaos which accompanied the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union.

The Kremlin has watched with displeasure as the European Union, the United States and China seek to challenge its dominance over energy supplies from the former Soviet Union.Former president Vladimir Putin, now prime minister, has accused Washington of coveting Russia's mineral wealth.The European Union, which gets a quarter of its gas from Russia, is pushing a pipeline project known as Nabucco which would bypass Russia in pumping up to 31 billion cubic metres of gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe.The EU has courted Turkmenistan, Central Asia's biggest gas producer, as a potential supplier for Nabucco. WASHINGTON – Hundreds of thousands of women, girls and babies have been raped during 12 years of conflict in eastern Congo, victims of a weapon of war that almost always goes unpunished, senators were told Wednesday.Similar atrocities are found in Darfur, the devastated western Sudan region where the United States said in 2004 that genocide was occurring. Women also have been targeted on a wide scale in recent decades during wars in Asia and Europe.The Senate Foreign Relations Committee heard testimony on the plight of women caught up in violence, emphasizing the Darfur and Congo disasters.Melanne Verveer, the State Department's ambassador-at-large for global women's issues, said 1,100 rapes are reported every month in the Congo battle area, which is 36 women and girls raped each day.Many are maimed by their attackers as well, she said.Rape is employed as a weapon because it is effective,Verveer said.It destroys the fabric of society from within and does so more efficiently than do guns or bombs.Rape is an effective weapon of war because it breaks apart families and communities, Verveer said.In addition to these rapes and gang rapes, of which there have been hundreds of thousands over the duration of the conflict, the perpetrators frequently mutilate the woman in the course of the attack,she said.The apparent purpose is to leave a lasting and inerasable signal to others that the woman has been violated.That, she said, in Congo as in many other cultures gives the victim a lifelong badge of shame.If married, she often is cast aside. If unmarried, she cannot find a mate.She said humanitarian organizations "report that attacks on women destroy the nucleus of the families, and with the unraveling families, the communities also disintegrate.There is little place in these villages to shore up the collapse of these integral institutions.

To make matters worse, she said, she quoted a report by the Human Rights Integrated Office in Congo that spoke of a marked lack of seriousness by law officers and magistrates toward raped females.Men accused of rape are often granted bail or given light sentences,Verveer said.Few cases are reported to the police, and fewer still are in prosecution.Verveer said that of the 14,000 rape cases registered in the Congo's provincial health centers in between 2005 and 2007, only 287 were taken to trial.She said police lack proper training, and the rule of law must be strengthened and provide victims given with access to justice while offering them protection throughout the judicial process.Verveer said Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, plans to visit Africa with representatives of the U.N. Security Council. One of their visits, Verveer said, will be to a hospital in the eastern Congo, where there is one of only two doctors in the region who are capable of the kind of surgery needed to rehabilitate women and girls whose organs are maimed by their attackers.Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer said the situation is a shame on the human race.Republican Sens. Johnny Isakson and Bob Corker, members of the committee, said they plan to visit the area in about 10 days, heading first to Khartoum, Sudan's capital, then to Darfur.

Geithner To Take Orders From Global Elite At Bilderberg

According to a London Times report, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will probably be in attendance at this week’s Bilderberg Group meeting, as top globalists meet to plot the financial future of the planet behind closed doors.The Times article notes that US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s public schedule is mysteriously empty for the next two days,speculating that he will be in Vouliagmeni, Greece for the annual elitist confab, following in the footsteps of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who attended last year’s conference in Washington DC just months before the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the start of the economic crisis.Geithner, who has overseen Obama’s bailout agenda since taking over from Hank Paulson, is the perfect stooge to implement the global financial regulatory systems that elitists have called for in the aftermath of the financial downturn.Back in March, Geithner publicly stated that there were no plans to move towards a global currency to supplant the dollar, and yet at a private CFR meeting he assured his fellow globalists that he was open to the notion of a new global currency system.

Geithner’s presence at Bilderberg is noteworthy, not only because Bernanke attended immediately before the economic crisis last year, but also because Bilderberg’s agenda for 2009 is heavily weighted towards the financial crisis. According to a pre-meeting booklet handed out to members that was leaked to investigative journalist Daniel Estulin, Bilderberg is divided on whether to put into motion, Either a prolonged, agonizing depression that dooms the world to decades of stagnation, decline and poverty … or an intense-but-shorter depression that paves the way for a new sustainable economic world order, with less sovereignty but more efficiency.The Times also reports that World Bank President Robert Zoellick,Will be in Athens on unspecified business on May 14,meaning it’s almost certain that he too will attend Bilderberg, as numerous past World Bank chiefs have done in previous years.During a speech which preceded this year’s G8 summit, Zoellick openly admitted Bilderberg’s plan to eliminate national sovereignty and impose a global government via the imposition of worldwide financial regulatory powers.Speaking about the agenda to increase not just funding but power for international organizations on the back of the financial crisis, Zoellick stated, If leaders are serious about creating new global responsibilities or governance, let them start by modernising multilateralism to empower the WTO, the IMF, and the World Bank Group to monitor national policies.

Although media guests won't talk about it, not all participants at the Bilderberg conference near Toronto are adhering strictly to traditional ground rules that preclude attendees from talking to the press. Jack Sheinkman, chairman of the board of Amalgamated Bank, said he raised plenty of questions about a variety of subjects.

Sheinkman, a Bilderberg Steering Committee member, said he has attended 10 Bilderberg annual meetings and that the conferences are not just inconsequential gab fests.

IMPORTANT DISCUSSIONS
