Thousands still without power as B.C. recovers from latest storm
Bill Cleverley, CanWest News Service; Victoria Times Colonist; with files from Vancouver Province Published: Sunday, December 18, 2006

VICTORIA - B.C. residents were picking up the pieces Saturday, many praying for power and surveying the damage in the wake of a windstorm that hit the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island early Friday. The third intense storm in a week plowed a trail of destruction, toppling trees, damaging buildings and cars, and knocking out power to an estimated 250,000 homes. Wind gusts of 158 kilometres an hour were recorded at Race Rocks, off Vancouver Island's southwest tip.BC Hydro officials were hoping to reduce the number without power on Vancouver Island to about 11,000 by the end of Saturday, but said some people, especially in the hard-hit West Shore communities and Sooke, could be without electricity for days.Greater Victoria hotels were reporting brisk business as several people had opted for the sure-fire warm bed rather than waiting for hydro crews. In Vancouver, officials said the city has never seen anything like it.

'This is probably the worst we have seen, in terms of widespread damage to traffic signals in particular, city engineer Tom Timm said Friday after assessing the mess.We haven't seen that kind of severe damage in the city before.Vancouver crews worked through the weekend to fix signals at 150 intersections that had been knocked out by power outages and broken light-fixtures.Crews were also cleaning up fallen trees and downed wires. No power was the least of the worries for some, including five families in Sooke who were lucky to be alive after more than a dozen large trees came toppling down at the height of the windstorm totally destroying both sides of one duplex and severely damaging three neighbours' homes.Cars and a trailer were crushed, and trees crashed through roofs, decks and fences, but miraculously no one was hurt.

It was terrifying, Kate Andrzejewski said as she recalled climbing a fence and running into the street in the pitch dark as one tree after another started crashing down all around, and ultimately into her house.Power to the commercial core of Sooke was restored at around 8 p.m. Friday. The municipality, which had been operating an emergency shelter at the town hall, found temporary homes for displaced residents at several local bed and breakfast operations.Sooke Mayor Janet Evans said hydro estimated it could be several days seven or more until power is restored to the outlying areas.'We recommend if your power is not going to be restored in a day ... you may want to consider looking at other arrangements, BC Hydro spokesman Ted Olynyk said.Susan Mundick, Vancouver Park Board's general manager, said Stanley Park would remain closed for the weekend.Trees have blocked the sea wall, with the added hazard of live Hydro wires among the fallen branches.

Our staff are saying that this is certainly the worst they've seen in Stanley Park, said Mundick. She said a half-dozen crews of four to six workers each were working full-bore trying to clean up the city's famed park.High winds knocked down trees across the Lower Mainland and power outages played havoc with public transit Friday morning. One of the two SeaBus berths at the North Vancouver terminal was damaged when a group of barges broke free of their moorings and rammed it.

Lions Gate Bridge was closed Friday morning, but by that afternoon road crews had cleared the approximately 100 fallen trees blocking the causeway through Stanley Park and the bridge was reopened to northbound and southbound traffic.Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan asked citizens and Christmas shoppers to be patient and civil to each other. This is probably the busiest shopping weekend of the year, he said. I would urge people to be very cautious and patient when they drive.Victoria Times Colonist

Floods in Malaysia's Johor state see thousands evacuated Tue Dec 19, 6:41 AM ET

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Thousands of people in Malaysia's southern Johor state have been evacuated after heavy rain caused floods and triggered minor landslides which disrupted rail services. The state Bernama news agency said over 2,000 people in districts around three Johor towns and its capital, Johor Bahru, had been told by police from early Tuesday to leave their homes.

The evacuees are now sheltering in community halls and state-run relief centres, it said Tuesday.Massive traffic jams were reported by Bernama in and around Johor Baru, while the national rail company said south-bound services, including connections to neighbouring Singapore, were disrupted. It said in a statement that heavy rains had caused minor landslides on tracks. All south-bound trains are unable to proceed because of this situation, it said in a statement released through Bernama.Passengers will be trans-shipped using buses between stations that are not affected by floods or landslides in order to continue their journey, it said.

Tracking a winter storm Mark Avery, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel Tue Dec 19, 9:46 AM ET

West

The West is the only region of the country that has stayed persistently cold over the last several days. Yesterday morning, several record lows were set across California, including in Sacramento (26), Oakland (31), and Long Beach (38). The Southwest is where active weather is occurring today, particularly in New Mexico and Colorado. Heavy snow is possible today in the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains near the New Mexico/Colorado border, with some areas receiving upwards of 1 to 2 feet before the end of snow on Wednesday. An upper level low is responsible for the snow and it will move across the Southern Plains and into the Midwest over the next several days. Winter storm watches are posted for portions of Colorado and Wyoming east of the Rockies for tonight into Wednesday as the system is expected to bring heavy snows to the Front Range tonight through Wednesday. High winds will continue to be an issue today and tonight in the Front Range as well. In the Northwest, weather conditions are expected to remain fairly quiet today with the exception of some showers around the Olympic Mountains and Seattle. The next storm system will come ashore tomorrow night into Thursday and bring a chance of valley rain/mountain snows and windy conditions across Washington and Oregon on Thursday. This system is forecast to move southeastward and bring snow to the Intermountain West on Friday and more snow to New Mexico and West Texas by Saturday. Temperatures are expected to remain at or below seasonal averages through the weekend.

South

The South is a region of contrasts today. Much of the South will start off with fog, particularly near the Gulf Coast and in the Mississippi and Tennessee River Valleys, but that's where the similarities end. East of the Mississippi River, near record warmth will continue for another day. Several record highs were set on Monday were set across the region, and there's the potential for more to occur today. But the unseasonably warm weather is coming to an end as a frontal boundary drops across the region and cools temperatures closer to seasonal averages on Wednesday and Thursday. Rain will also move into the area Thursday and Friday. By Friday and through the weekend, a rebound in temperatures will occur as temperatures climb back into the 60s and 70s. Along the East Coast of Florida, there's a moderate risk of rip currents again from Cocoa Beach southward to Key Largo, and around Florida Bay (including the north side of the Florida Keys). Temperatures across Florida are expected to remain in the 70s through the weekend. West of the Mississippi River, and particularly in West Texas today, changes are on the way that will affect the whole South through the remainder of the week. A developing winter storm over the Four Corners will start to affect West Texas and Western Oklahoma today with the potential for a significant snow and ice event in places like Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas. Winter and ice storm warnings are in effect for parts of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles today and tonight. Where temperatures are above freezing, heavy rain is possible across the Red River Valley (the Texas/Oklahoma border) and portions of North Texas. Another shot of cold air is on tap for the Southern Plains over the weekend as a storm system that's forecast to come ashore in the Pacific Northwest tomorrow and Thursday dives southeastward and brings another chance of precipitation towards the weekend as well as cooler temperatures by then.

Midwest

The Midwest is also a region of contrasts today. West of the Mississippi River in the Northern and Central Plains, the day should start off nice with plenty of sunshine and above average temperatures, but clouds will be on the increase as the day progresses. Tonight, wintry precipitation starts up in portions of Kansas and Nebraska and spread north and eastward into South Dakota, Southern Minnesota, and Western Iowa by Wednesday. A winter storm watch has been posted for tonight through Wednesday for much of the Plains states. Where temperatures remain above freezing, heavy rain is possible for Wednesday, including Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri. East of the Mississippi River, a beautiful December day is on tap with above average temperatures again for today. Rain chances will increase on Wednesday near the Mississippi River and spread across the region towards the Great Lakes on Thursday and Friday. Snow will be possible over portions of Wisconsin and Michigan on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures are expected to remain above average through the remainder of the work week and through the weekend.

Northeast

In the Northeast, a dose of December temperatures hits today. After unseasonably warm temperatures over the last several days, and a few record highs on Monday, temperatures will be back to near seasonal averages for today. With the exception of a stray flurry across Upstate New York and Northern New England, it should remain dry across the region. Temperatures are expected to rebound by Friday back above average once again. The next chance of rain comes in on Saturday and into Sunday.

Visitors kept away from Hawaii volcano Mon Dec 18, 11:34 PM ET

VOLCANO, Hawaii - Visitors to one of the world's most active volcanoes are being kept hundreds of feet away from a 55-acre lava delta that authorities believe may soon collapse into the Pacific Ocean.Eruption-watchers from the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Monday reported lava continuing to flow into the ocean off the west side and tip of the expanding black delta, while small breakouts of lava from higher up the slopes of Kilauea Volcano were described as resembling a string of holiday lights.Kilauea, star attraction of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has been luring thousands of visitors each week to its ongoing eruption since 1983. Some are treated to spectacular displays as molten lava spews into the ocean, but these days most are missing the show, partly because of the long hikes to the best viewpoints and the danger of collapsing lava.

The flow repeatedly builds up and then takes away land from Hawaii's slowly expanding Big Island. Rather than blowing its top, Kilauea's ongoing eruption pushes molten lava through a network of tubes under the thin lava crust. The thin lava delta is the largest buildup of unstable land extending from Kilauea out into the ocean since the marathon eruption began, according to volcanologists.

Some predict the next giant lava collapse could be bigger than the rapid crumbling of 44 acres over 4 1/2 hours on Nov. 28, 2005. That collapse brought down a section of sea cliff and sent molten rock and boulders rocketing into the air.But Jim Kauahikaua, head of the observatory, said the bench could continue to crumble away a few acres at a time rather than collapsing all at once.Because of the danger even on supposedly solid ground, park officials have put up a rope barrier 300 to 600 feet back from the edge of the new lava delta. No one was injured in the 2005 collapse, but a park visitor was killed in 1993 when lava he was standing on cracked away into the ocean. While up to 900 people a day visit the sprawling park, only a few dozen a day make the three-mile trek out to the edge of the unstable lava bench, said park ranger Rob Eli.

It's a difficult, long hike that can take as long as five hours back and forth from the park's lava-blocked Chain of Craters Road, Eli said. The unstable lava delta is constantly changing as hardened lava piles up on the slope of the volcano that extends to the ocean floor. Offshore information on the terrain is scarce, said Kauahikaua.Lava hitting the water at 2,200 degrees forms a rough and unstable mass of lava, rock and sand. It doesn't become a relatively smooth, paving-like surface until the lava builds up above the water, according to scientists. In a big collapse, the unstable buildup under the delta as well as the huge billows of steam set off by lava hitting the cool water pose a danger to anyone along the shore.Rangers warn visitors to make a plan for their visit and check the latest reports on dangerous areas.Meanwhile, a worrisome three-year swelling of Kilauea seems to have ended, according to scientists monitoring instruments at the observatory. Some suggest a powerful Oct. 15 earthquake may have relieved pressure inside the volcano that some speculated could lead to a more violent eruption at some point.Generally, the steady flow of lava in Kilauea's long-running eruption has caused the volcano to deflate, but the inflation that started in 2003 came with an increased lava flow.

IRAN BY Jerusalem Prayer Team (Mike Evans)

Dear Stan,

Why does a country that sits atop the world’s third largest oil reserve require 100,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium? Why does a country that denies wanting to make atomic weapons need to enrich such a large amount of uranium, especially since Iran does not have one atomic power plant at this time? These are questions we must ask ourselves in order to determine the gravity of the situation with Iran. These questions were magnified this week when the President of Iran told a group of participants in the Holocaust conference in Tehran: The Zionist regime will be wiped out soon the same way the Soviet Union was, and humanity will achieve freedom. The conference included such anti-Semitic propagandists as former Ku Klux Klan leader David Dukes, and a group of anti-Semitic, disgraced European scholars. The sad fact is that Ahmadinejad seems to actually believe that the Holocaust is simply a conspiracy to legitimize the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.

This is important because the same centrifuge that enriches uranium for atomic fuel to power plants is the same centrifuge used to make uranium for nuclear warheads. Please sign the petition to President Bush today! We must not delay; time is of the essence. We need 100,000 signatures asking President Bush not to engage Iran in the peace talks regarding the future of Iraq. Iran must not be allowed to hide behind a smoke screen of engaging in peace negotiations while funding terrorists that are killing American troops in Iraq. Currently, Iran has 164 centrifuges (called cascades.) Alone, it would take years to produce enough uranium for nuclear arms. According to Tehran, the next installation would be 3,000 centrifuges. This would produce enough uranium for a bomb within the year. Last Wednesday, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) voted to suspend financial support for one of Iran’s nuclear reactors. It is this reactor at Buscher that would produce enough plutonium to produce an atomic bomb. The IAEA will continue to fund seven so-called civilian nuclear projects. This suspension of funding would also apply to the heavy-water reactor under construction near Arak. The head of the Israeli atomic energy commission told me that the U.S. provided 30 cents on the every dollar that the IAEA funnels to Iran. This needs to be stopped.

It is not likely that the IAEA will reach any accord on sanctions against Iran in the coming days. Both Russia and China have been averse to agreeing to sanctions on Iran. Their concern is that Iran will leave the nonproliferation treaty. It seems to me that Iran is already in violation of the nonproliferation treaty. What would you call a determination to put 100,000 centrifuges on line, if not nuclear proliferation? The reactor at Arak is of major concern because the spent fuel rods from that location can be used to produce plutonium, which can be used for nuclear bombs. And, in fact, small traces of plutonium have been found in barrels at a site in Iran.
We dare not ignore Iran’s nuclear ambitions. To do so would be to risk the lives of our children and grandchildren. Please sign the petition to President Bush today! We must not delay; time is of the essence. We need 100,000 signatures.

Manhigut Yehudit Conference Tuesday to Start the Revolution
By Ezra HaLevi (INN)

Manhigut Yehudit (Jewish Leadership), the movement that has signed thousands of Land of Israel loyalists up for membership in the Likud Party, is holding a conference Tuesday evening. The faction, led by former anti-Oslo Accords protest leader and Likud leader candidate Moshe Feiglin, is seeking to expand its formidable influence within the Likud under the assumption that the party will return to power in the near future. Honored at the conference with lighting the Chanukah menorah will be Jonathan Pollard, IDF soldiers who refused expulsion-related orders, hilltop residents, teenage anti-expulsion arrestees and new immigrants to Israel.
Organizers say the conference will kick off a renewed push toward bringing about an alternative leadership for the State of Israel. Feiglin wrote last week: It is urgent to replace the culture of perfidy with a culture of loyalty: Loyalty to our spouses, to our family, to our Jewish heritage, our Jewish identity, our Land, our fellow Jews and our G-d. This is nothing short of a revolution…Now it is in your hands. [The conference] will help to jump-start the revolution. You owe it to yourself, your children and your People to be there.

Former Gush Katif spokesman Eran Sternberg will chair the conference, and speakers will include former MK Moshe Peled and Rabbis Shmuel Eliyahu and Uri Sharki.Taking place on the fifth night of Chanukah, the menorah will be kindled by people who acted in the spirit of the Macabbees, organizers explain. Jailed American Jewish naval intelligence officer Jonathan Pollard was invited to light the first candle, but it will be lit instead by his wife Esther. Shoshi Greenfield, whose brother was killed in the summer’s Lebanon War, will light the second one; she caused a stir when she delivered an impassioned eulogy for her brother, calling upon IDF soldiers loyal to the land of Israel to refuse to fight the War For the Convergence Plan and demanded that then-IDF Chief Rabbi Yisrael Weiss leave the funeral for his role in the Disengagement. Teenage girls who refused to recognize Israel’s court system, demanding to be tried instead by the Sanhedrin and sitting in jail for months as a result, will light the third. Residents of hilltop outpost communities who received administrative orders banning them from their homes will light the fourth candle. Finally, IDF soldiers who refused orders and stood up against the Disengagement will light the fifth.

The Manhigut Yehudit conference is dedicated in memory of Arutz-7 broadcaster Adir Zik, and will feature musical performances by Aharon Razel and Ariel Zilber, both of whom moved to Gaza prior to the expulsion.New immigrants to Israel are being honored as well. Manhigut Yehudit Educational Director David Shirel says that the conference features a special focus this year on galvanizing the ideological enthusiasm of Western olim (immigrants to Israel) toward effecting change in the Jewish state. The conference will take place at Jerusalem’s Renaissance Hotel at 7 PM tonight (Tuesday). For more information, email: shir@manhigut.org.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:(FROM FRIGHT)
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

Harsh Debate on Tamir’s Green Line Map
By Hana Levi Julian (INN)

The Knesset Education Committee held a harsh debate Monday on whether to return the pre-1967 Green Line demarcation to maps in school textbooks.Education Minister Yuli Tamir, a former founding member of Peace Now, ordered her staff at the beginning of the month to ensure that textbook maps show the pre-1967 borders that separated Judea, Samaria and Gaza from the rest of Israel.

We teach, for instance, about United Nations Resolution 242, but we don't show students the Green Line. We cannot deny that there used to be a border that is still being debated today, she said in making the announcement on December 5th.How can we demand that the Arab world recognize our borders if we don’t recognize the June 1967 borders, she asked. The battle lines were drawn even more sharply at Monday’s committee meeting.

What does she want – that a student in Ramat Eshkol or N'vei Yaakov or Gilo will feel like he lives outside of the border? asked National Union/National Religious Party chairman and Knesset Member Zevulun Orlev.Ladies and gentlemen, that [Green Line] is not our border! he declared vehemently.Ultimately, the committee members were not given the option to debate the matter further. Chairman Michael Melchior (Labor-Meimad) squashed a motion to freeze action on her decision until there was more time to discuss the issue in depth, and he refused to bring the matter to a vote.

Decisions Don’t Necessarily Mean Action

It is becoming clear that there is a significant difference between issuing an order to change all the maps in school textbooks, and actually having the wherewithal to do so.According to the director of the Geological Survey of Israel, the Green Line can only be drawn on maps designated as historic - because it no longer exists. In an interview on Israel state radio, Dr. Chaim Srabro said the Green Line is only a historic entity, not a political border, despite Tamir’s assertion that it is in fact still being debated.Former Meretz Party head Yossi Sarid, a former Education Minister, issued a statement two weeks ago in support of Tamir’s decision. Israeli students must know that Israel's borders both in the north and the east are not final and will be determined by negotiations, he said. At the same time, National Union MK Rabbi Yitzchak Levy, who served as Education Minister from 1998 to1999, added his voice to the chorus of dissent. Rabbi Levy said he did not approve of Tamir's stance on placing all of Judea and Samaria up for grabs in keeping with Arab and Palestinian Authority demands to turn the entire area into an independent Arab state. Tamir is trying to force her political opinions upon the students of Israel, Levy said. Previous Education Ministers kept the Ministry free of political decisions of this nature.

The most important political test, however, will ultimately appear in the budget, according to Professor Yoram Ben-Gal of Haifa University’s Geography and Environmental Studies Department. Ben-Gal told Haaretz on Tuesday that most textbooks are published by private firms, who are not likely to pay for the expensive change, leaving the government to debate whether it is willing to foot the bill.

British PM makes pitch to kickstart Middle East peace process
Matthew Fisher, CanWest News Service,Monday, December 18, 2006

JERUSALEM — British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday tried to breathe some new life into the long-stalled Middle East peace process. But his visit to the troubled region was overshadowed by continuing violence. In Gaza a ceasefire between Fatah and Hamas was violated by the shooting death of a Fatah member and the kidnapping of a senior Fatah official.Sufian Abu Zaideh, a former minister responsible for Palestinians in Israeli jails, was released after being held for only two hours as a sign of goodwill, according to Hamas. While Abu Zaideh was being held by Hamas, a mid-level Fatah official was killed when gunmen from both Hamas and Fatah exchanged gunfire in the Jabalya refugee camp.

There was less violence Monday than during the previous week when the Gaza Strip endured battles, assassinations and assassination attempts. Nevertheless, there were several serious breaches of the truce agreed between leaders of the rival factions early Monday morning. The worst gun battles took place in the heart of Gaza City, where gunmen vied for control of high rise rooftops, to better keep track of their enemies.Meanwhile, the political deadlock between Hamas and Fatah over the formation of a national unity government continued, as did Hamas’ fierce opposition to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ call for new parliamentary and presidential elections to break the impasse. With Prime Minister Tony Blair at his side after a meeting in the Palestinian’s provisional capital, Ramallah, Abbas said: We are going to hold early elections. We can see nothing that can stop us. We are a democracy so let the people decide.Speaking from Gaza, Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas denounced Abbas election call as not constitutional and predicted it could lead to a large disturbance among the Palestinian people. But Blair made no secret of where the West’s allegiance lied.

He offered clear and explicit support for Abbas’ election plan. It was the best way, he said, to create a government acceptable to western nations who cut off about $1 billion in annual foreign aid soon after Hamas won a parliamentary majority last January because the Islamic Resistance Movement refused to recognize Israel or renounce violence.CanWest News Service

Religion and homosexuality divide Europeans
18.12.2006 - 17:40 CET | By Mark Beunderman

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The idea of a single set of European values was thrown into doubt on Monday (18 December) as a fresh Eurobarometer poll exposed strongly varying attitudes towards delicate issues such as religion, homosexuality and drug use across the EU.The survey, conducted for the European Commission, for the first time quizzed Europeans about some key societal issues which are closely related to national histories and cultures. The study revealed a huge rift in attitudes towards homosexuality, with the Dutch (82%) followed by the Swedes and the Danes (71% and 69%) strongly in favour of allowing gay marriages in the whole EU, while only 12 percent of Latvians and equally small percentages of Poles (17%) and Greeks (15%) said they back the idea. Adoption by gays of children is even more controversial and is okayed by only one third of EU citizens – with the Dutch (69%) and the Swedes (51%) again giving most pro-gay answers.

But North Western Europe itself is divided on the legalisation of cannabis, with Sweden among those countries showing least support for EU legalisation (9%) while the Dutch (49%), who already have liberal legislation on the issue, are the most interested in the idea. Meanwhile, Europeans also disagree about the place of religion in society. Large numbers of Cypriots (81%), Maltese (70%) and Italians (63%) say that religion takes up a too important role in society – but at the other end of the scale, only 20 percent of Estonians and Bulgarians believe so.

Limits to freedom and tolerance

When confronted with the almost philosophical dilemma of equality versus individual freedom, important majorities of Portuguese (80%), Hungarians (74%) and Italians – as well as an average of around two thirds of EU citizens as a whole – favour the idea that we need more equality and justice even if this means less freedom for the individual. Nordic and Dutch people however showed less appetite for this trade-off, with around one half rejecting the idea of giving away freedoms. The Eurobarometer – for which a total of 29,152 people were interviewed – also shows one notable point where Europeans all want the same thing - a tougher clampdown on crime. Support for the assertion that criminals should be punished more severely ran from 70 percent in Denmark to as high as 97 percent in Cyprus.

EU constitution surprise

Monday's Eurobarometer also includes some more regular questions – such as on people's view towards the shelved EU constitution. The survey surprisingly shows that citizens in France and the Netherlands, who last year rejected the charter, now support it. Fifty six percent of the French and 59 percent of the Dutch said they are in favour of the EU constitution – a figure which appears to contrast with recent data from other surveys in both countries which suggest the opposite. A survey for the French paper Liberation released last May one year after the referendum said that 98 percent do not regret their choice (54.7 percent of the French electorate voted against the charter). A November poll by Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond said 64 percent of Dutch voters would say no to the constitution if asked to vote in a referendum again.

EU must claim human dignity, rights, common values as core of its unity, bishops state 12/18/2006,Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

BRUSSELS, Belgium (Catholic Online) – The European Union must be rooted in a firm community of values that places human dignity and the transcendental destiny of the human person at its core, said Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Community (COMECE).In a document, Common values – the living source of the European project, sent Dec. 11 to the leaders of European Union (EU) institutions, 21 bishops from bishops’ conferences in EU countries pointed to the Christian origins of the continent that preceded political union and the religious and humanistic motivation of the citizens of that continental union and noted that only by drawing upon common values will Europe be able to meet the new and transnational challenges of today and the future.

The 1,200-word document, entitled Common values – the living source of the European project, was adopted on Nov. 24, the last day of the bishops three-day autumn plenary assembly. It was written in anticipation of the release of the EU Berlin Declaration, to be issued by the heads of member-state governments on March 25, 2007, that will attempt to provide a guide with regard to the values and long-term objectives of the EU. That day marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome by France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg that established the European Economic Community and created the basis for what has become the European Union. For many of its founders, the Christian imprint on the European project has been an indisputable fact, the bishops said.

This ambition was deeply rooted in a set of common values with respect for human dignity at its core. This respect of human dignity served as the basis for promoting the protection of human rights, the rule of law, solidarity, subsidiarity and democracy, the European bishops said. These values correspond to Catholic social teaching which, too, is built on human dignity and the common good, they noted, adding that faced with new global challenges an understanding of those values will need to be refined. The issues facing the European community are wide ranging, the bishops said. How to promote social justice and sustainable economic growth in the era of globalization? How to maintain decent living conditions and job security in times of rising unemployment and impoverishment? How to restore and promote family and community life under the conditions of drastic demographic changes? the 21 religious leaders asked, while pointing to the further need to provide ethical responses to mass migration, shortage of energy supply, climate change, international terrorism and conflicts throughout the globe, and the respect of undeniable diversity of the European peoples.

The EU leaders, the bishops said, will have to prove that these challenges can only be tackled by putting our common values into practice and developing concrete ambitions. They stressed that, while the European Union may be contributing to the problems associated with globalization, it must now be a part of the solution. The 21 bishops urged the EU leaders in the Berlin Declaration to reiterate that the European project serves the human person, the protection of life and its integral development. They stressed their concern that EU citizens identify with the values proclaimed by the EU and engage with the European project. Many EU citizens do not see sufficient reason to identify with and engage in the European project. This project cannot remain, however, an undertaking of a small European elite, the bishops said. The Berlin Declaration offers an opportunity to explain to EU citizens which values inspire and guide this project and which ambitions it pursues.

The bishops document pointed to the fact that a majority of those in the European Union are Christians whose faith is the living source for their support of our common values and ambitions. As a result, the Berlin Declaration should be inclusive enough not only to list the values and ambitions of the European Union, but to reflect the religious and humanistic motivation of EU citizenship and take account of the transcendental destiny of the human person. The bishops warned that moves by politicians within member-states to a re-nationalization of important policies would threaten further development of the European Union and disregard the transnational character of the challenges facing the continent. Efforts must be undertaken to make the EU more democratic, efficient and transparent to ensure that it lives up to its responsibility to be a stabilizing factor for the globalized world, the bishops said.

Peace in Europe is too often taken for granted, the 21 bishops said. The conflicts on our continent and in neighboring parts of the world show that a peaceful state of affairs may easily be undone. Peace, its maintenance and promotion, must be perceived as a permanent ambition. The Berlin Declaration, they added, can make an important contribution to ensuring that the European project will remain a synonym for promoting sustainable peace. They called upon all politicians, citizens and European institutions to work toward a new political and legal framework which lives up to the needs and wishes of the people and serves the common good of Europe and the world. The COMECE (Commissio Episcopatuum Communitatis Europensis), based here, is made up of 21 bishops appointed by the Catholic bishops’ conferences of the European Union that include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, England and Wales, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Scandinavia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. The bishops' conference of Switzerland is an associate member.

37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Bishops want God in EU birthday declaration
19.12.2006 - 09:26 CET | By Mark Beunderman

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - European bishops are urging for the inclusion of a reference to Christianity in the EU's 50 year anniversary declaration next year, after they failed to get God included in the shelved EU constitution. In a document released last week, the Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) promotes its views on the content of the so-called Berlin Declaration - to be signed by EU leaders in March next year - marking the 50th birthday of the 1957 Treaty of Rome which laid the basis for the current European Union. The bishops' text states that for a majority of EU citizens their Christian faith is the living source for their support of our common values and ambitions. The Berlin Declaration, therefore, should be inclusive enough not only to list the values and ambitions of the European Union but to reflect the religious and humanistic motivation of EU citizenship.

Thus it needs to take account of the transcendental destiny of the human person, bishops write referring to a 1963 encyclic by Pope John XXIII, but not specifying what kind of wording they would like to see in the Berlin Declaration. The Roman Catholic leaders also note that for many of [the EU's] founders, the Christian imprint on the European project has been an indisputable fact. They state that the union's founding fathers in the 1950s were led by values such as human rights, the rule of law, solidarity, subsidiarity (the principle that decisions should be taken at the lowest possible level) and democracy, with respect for human dignity at its core.

These values correspond to Catholic social teaching which, too, is built on human dignity and the common good, the text states.

Interference with constitution

European bishops' initiative to get God included in the EU's birthday declaration follows an earlier failed lobby for a reference to Europe's Christian heritage in the preamble of the EU constitution, which was shelved after French and Dutch voters rejected it in referendums in 2005. The catholic leadership's latest push highlights the political sensitivity of the Berlin declaration, the drafting of which interferes with a re-emerging debate on what to do with the constitution. Germany, which will hold the EU presidency from 1 January, will have a key responsibility in drafting the birthday declaration - but it has also been tasked to design a roadmap on the constitution at the end of its presidency. German chancellor Angela Merkel last spring personally spoke out in favour of a reference to God in the EU constitution, reopening the debate over the issue.

Text-drafting

In the EU institutions meanwhile, the drafting of the symbolic Berlin Declaration has already begun, with MEPs suggesting the document should include elements ranging from the union's past achievements; its ability to overcome crisis; and future challenges such as climate change. Bishops for their part say that the Berlin declaration should speak out against a re-nationalisation of policies, reassure citizens on globalisation and stress the EU's role as a peacemaker.

The Rape of Europe
From the desk of Paul Belien on Wed, 2006-10-25 20:57

The German author Henryk M. Broder recently told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant (12 October) that young Europeans who love freedom, better emigrate. Europe as we know it will no longer exist 20 years from now. Whilst sitting on a terrace in Berlin, Broder pointed to the other customers and the passers-by and said melancholically: We are watching the world of yesterday.

Europe is turning Muslim. As Broder is sixty years old he is not going to emigrate himself. am too old, he said. However, he urged young people to get out and move to Australia or New Zealand. That is the only option they have if they want to avoid the plagues that will turn the old continent uninhabitable. Many Germans and Dutch, apparently, did not wait for Broder advice. The number of emigrants leaving the Netherlands and Germany has already surpassed the number of immigrants moving in. One does not have to be prophetic to predict, like Henryk Broder, that Europe is becoming Islamic. Just consider the demographics. The number of Muslims in contemporary Europe is estimated to be 50 million. It is expected to double in twenty years. By 2025, one third of all European children will be born to Muslim families. Today Mohammed is already the most popular name for new-born boys in Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and other major European cities.

Broder is convinced that the Europeans are not willing to oppose islamization. The dominant ethos,he told De Volkskrant, is perfectly voiced by the stupid blonde woman author with whom I recently debated. She said that it is sometimes better to let yourself be raped than to risk serious injuries while resisting. She said it is sometimes better to avoid fighting than run the risk of death. In a recent op-ed piece in the Brussels newspaper De Standaard (23 October) the Dutch (gay and self-declared humanist) author Oscar Van den Boogaard refers to Broders interview. Van den Boogaard says that to him coping with the islamization of Europe is like a process of mourning. He is overwhelmed by a feeling of sadness.I am not a warrior, he says, but who is? I have never learned to fight for my freedom. I was only good at enjoying it.As Tom Bethell wrote in this months American Spectator: Just at the most basic level of demography the secular-humanist option is not working. But there is more to it than the fact that non-religious people tend not to have as many children as religious people, because many of them prefer to enjoy freedom rather than renounce it for the sake of children. Secularists, it seems to me, are also less keen on fighting. Since they do not believe in an afterlife, this life is the only thing they have to lose. Hence they will rather accept submission than fight. Like the German feminist Broder referred to, they prefer to be raped than to resist.

if faith collapses, civilization goes with it,says Bethell. That is the real cause of the closing of civilization in Europe. Islamization is simply the consequence. The very word Islam means submission and the secularists have submitted already. Many Europeans have already become Muslims, though they do not realize it or do not want to admit it.Some of the people I meet in the U.S. are particularly worried about the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe. They are correct when they fear that anti-Semitism is also on the rise among non-immigrant Europeans. The latter hate people with a fighting spirit. Contemporary anti-Semitism in Europe (at least when coming from native Europeans) is related to anti-Americanism. People who are not prepared to resist and are eager to submit, hate others who do not want to submit and are prepared to fight. They hate them because they are afraid that the latter will endanger their lives as well. In their view everyone must submit. This is why they have come to hate Israel and America so much, and the small band of European islamophobes who dare to talk about what they see happening around them. West Europeans have to choose between submission (islam) or death. I fear, like Broder, that they have chosen submission just like in former days when they preferred to be red rather than dead.

Europeans apparently never read John Stuart Mill:

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
- John Stuart Mill

MUSLIM NATIONS

EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY)of the north quarters, and all his bands:(SUDAN,AFRICA) and many people with thee.
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

ISAIAH 17:1
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

PSALMS 83:3-7
3 They (ARABS,MUSLIMS) have taken crafty counsel against thy people,(ISRAEL) and consulted against thy hidden ones.
4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:(TREATIES)
6 The tabernacles of Edom,and the Ishmaelites;(ARABS) of Moab, and the Hagarenes;
7 Gebal, and Ammon,(JORDAN) and Amalek;(SYRIA) the Philistines (PALESTINIANS) with the inhabitants of Tyre;(LEBANON)

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

JOEL 2:3,20,30-31
3 A fire(NUCLEAR BOMB) devoureth before them;(RUSSIA-ARABS) and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army,(RUSSIA,MUSLIMS) and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.(SIBERIAN DESERT)
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(NUCLEAR BOMB)
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

Iran Wants Israel To Return Golan To Syria
12:55 AM, December 19th 2006,by News Staff

Iran's ambassador to Syria made a subtle overture Monday, saying Iran wants to see the disputed Golan Heights returned to Syria by Israel. In an interview with the London-published Al-Hayat Arabic newspaper, Hassan Akhtari denied Iranian and Syrian relations were cool, calling the relationship excellent and strategic, but said it could not be described as an alliance. YNetNews said it appears from Akhtari's remarks Iran is a test of Syria's reaction to several European countries pressure for Damascus to participate in a Middle East peace deal. Iran would not support Syrian compliance with Western wishes. Akhtari said in the interview Tehran is confident Damascus would maintain its traditional anti-Western philosophy. As opposed to what some seem to think, we are not concerned over a weakening of Iran's relationship with Syria because we know that it hasn't happened and will not happen, Akhtari said.UPI

Israel's Mossad: Syria is arming Hezbollah rapidly

Syria is arming the Hezbollah guerillas at rapid pace and trying to topple the Lebanese government, head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency said on Monday. In his briefing of the Knesset (Parliament) Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday, Mossad Chief Meir Dagan said there is no indication that Syria is moving toward peace, according to a local newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth report. Dagan said that Syria is now arming itself and Hezbollah at a rapid pace, trying to topple Siniora's government, and undermining American presence in Iraq. About the situation in Lebanon after the war in last summer, Dagan said that Hezbollah hasn't been disarmed and keeps its presence in the southern Lebanon, in coordination with the Lebanese army. Hezbollah is unabatedly being armed with missiles, some of which they have installed north of the Litani. Hezbollah is using all its strength to nullify Resolution 1701, Dagan added.

Referring to the Iran issue, Dagan said that Tehran is approaching nuclear capability. They have technical problems that they have yet to solve, but no international pressure is being applied against them at the moment, Dagan was quoted as saying. Dagan also warned of the growing power of al-Qaida, who indicated Israel as a main target. According to him, If Iraq crumbles, al-Qaida's influence on the moderate regimes will increase. ISAIAH 26:21
21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.(WW3,1/2 earths population die).

ISAIAH 13:6-13 KJV

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.

MATTHEW 24:37-51
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

IRAN 3-4 YRS. FROM NUKE: ISRAEL,By NILES LATHEM,December 19, 2006

WASHINGTON - Iran's nuclear program is further advanced than most governments realize - and the fanatic ayatollahs who control the country are three or four years away from being able to deploy an atomic weapon, Israel's spy chief said yesterday. Mossad director Meir Dagan said Iran could have a bomb in three to four years. In 2005, U.S. spy agencies predicted it would take a decade for Iran to deploy a nuclear weapon. The Pentagon is planning a major buildup of naval forces in and around the Persian Gulf as a warning to Iran, CBS reported yesterday, adding a second aircraft carrier would be assigned to the area. Defense Department officials called the report premature and speculative.

Quake in Indonesia kills 7, injures 100 Mon Dec 18, 4:15 AM ET

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A moderate earthquake killed at least seven people and injured 100 early Monday, spreading panic across a large swath of the Indonesian island worst hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami, witnesses and officials said. The 5.5-magnitude tremor hit just before dawn and was centered about 670 miles northwest of the capital, Jakarta, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. It triggered landslides that hampered emergency efforts, and destroyed or damaged more than 680 homes. Frightened residents of Sumatra fled into the streets. The quake was followed by several aftershocks that kept people on edge in the worst-hit region. Our rescue teams are facing difficulties reaching the affected areas because landslides are blocking roads, said Josikar Tanjung, an employee at the north Sumatra governor's office, adding that some heavy equipment had gotten through.

Six people, including two children, were killed by falling debris, while an elderly person died from a heart attack, Tanjung said.

At least 1,000 people whose homes were destroyed took shelter under tents or in local government buildings, said government spokesman Edy Sofyan.About 30 minutes before the quake, a 5.8-magnitude tremor struck off Sumatra's coast, the USGS said. No tsunami warning was issued as a result of that quake. On Dec. 26, 2004, a massive quake spawned a tsunami that killed or left missing an estimated 230,000 people in 12 Indian Ocean nations, with more than half of the dead in Aceh province on the northern tip of Sumatra.Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Quake causes panic in western Algeria Sun Dec 17, 4:21 PM ET

ALGIERS (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale rattled Chlef in western Algeria, causing widespread panic, the Algerian geophysics centre CRAAG said. The epicentre of the quake, felt at 1934 GMT Saturday, was 11 kilometres (six miles) northwest of the town, which is 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of Algiers, CRAAG said. The region's prefect Mohamed Ghazi told the APS news agency that cracks had appeared in the walls of a police station in the region. Many inhabitants rushed out into the street, according to the civil protection agency, but there were no reports of casualties or major damage. The Chlef region was hit by a deadly earthquake on October 10 1980, registering 7.1 on the Richter scale, which killed at least 5,000 people.

Australian fires kill thousands of native animals By Alex Koutts Mon Dec 18, 2:51 AM ET

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of native Australian animals such as koalas and kangaroos have been killed in bushfires that have burned across southeast Australia in the past two weeks, wildlife officials said on Monday. The bushfires, which are still burning in three eastern states, have been so big and intense that wildlife officials fear some species may become extinct as the fires destroy large swathes of animal habitats. The fires are so devastating and moving so quickly that animals just don't have a chance to get out of the way, said Pat O'Brien, president of the Wildlife Protection Association.Because of the heat and the fireballs that are happening the animals are just bursting into flames and just being killed even before the fire gets to them because its so hot, O'Brien told Reuters on Monday.

Koalas and possums, which instinctively climb to the treetops for safety, would have had no chance of escaping the blazes, and kangaroos and bush birds would have been unable to outrun the fast-burning fires, he said. This meant a very real threat of seeing species unique to the burnt-out areas, such as frogs and birds, becoming extinct, O'Brien said. These fires will directly contribute to the extinction of a number of species and we won't know the full effects for another 10 years, he said.It takes 100 years for some animals to move back in an area, if there's any available to move back in. In the case of gliders, which are rare and endangered anyway, they may never come back ... they'll just go into extinction.Fires in Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales states have burned more than 847,000 hectares (2 million acres). The worst fires are in Victoria where more than 4,000 firefighters are battling four large blazes which have blackened 750,000 hectares.Police say more than 30 homes have so far been razed.Firefighters said on Monday cooler conditions had eased the bushfire threat in the three eastern states but fires were still burning out of control. In Western Australia, a fire which has already destroyed 12,000 hectares is blazing unchecked.

EXPLODE INTO FLAMES

Wildlife officials said a major factor in the high animal death toll was the predominance of eucalyptus trees in burning bushland. The oil in the trees explodes into flames. As soon as they get hot the eucalypt oil catches on fire and then it just goes like a steam train, said Hugh Wirth, president of Victoria's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).If you've got a crown fire, in other words the fire is going through the treetops ... those fires move extremely rapidly and the animals just can't outrun them, not even kangaroos.Wirth said he believed close to 100 percent of the animals in the path of the Victorian blazes had been destroyed, with wildlife rescuers reporting no survivors.Surviving wildlife usually comes out of hiding within three to four days of a fire going through the area and unfortunately we're not getting any reports of any survivors so far, he said.

Wildlife officials fear the animal death toll will rise even further as those animals which survive the fires may now starve to death in the charred landscape. Even if they do survive the fires there's starvation issues beyond that. It's just another nail in the coffin of the species which may have survived otherwise, said O'Brien. Australia faces extreme fire danger this summer due to a drought. Bushfires are a regular feature of the summer and, over the past 40 years, they have killed more than 250 people. Scientists fear climate change will bring more frequent higher temperatures and less rainfall.

ACTS 1:10-11
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

ZECHARIAH 14:4
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

REVELATION 19:11-16

12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

ISAIAH 9:6-7

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

PVL: New strain of superbug targets the young, and its latest victim is an NHS nurse By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor ,18 December 2006

A nurse and a patient have died from a deadly new strain of MRSA after a superbug outbreak at a hospital. The Health Protection Agency said three other nurses in the West Midlands hospital were among eight people who contracted the new, more lethal strain of MRSA, four of whom have infections including boils and abscesses. Two have died.It is the first time that the toxic strain of the superbug, known as PVL-producing MRSA, has caused infection and deaths in a hospital, the agency said. The outbreak has alarmed public health officials who say it could pose risks for staff as well as patients. The toxic PVL strain has previously been detected only in small outbreaks among healthy children and young people. It attacks the white blood cells, destroys tissue and can cause boils up to 3 inches (10cms) across. If it became established in hospitals, where people are sicker, have lowered immunity and may have open wounds, it could pose a much more serious threat. Ordinary hospital-associated MRSA preys on older, sicker patients and does not normally affect nurses and other staff.

The Health Protection Agency put out a warning to the NHS at the weekend in its weekly Communicable Disease Report. It said patients with boils and abscesses should be tested for the new strain and the results sent to the Centre for Infections in Colindale, north London. In a statement, the agency said: This outbreak is the first time transmission and deaths due to this strain are known to have occurred in a healthcare setting in England and Wales. The HPA is advising the hospital on outbreak control measures and will continue to monitor MRSA infection rates nationally. But a spokesman added: There is no indication that [the PVL strain] is widespread or gaining a foothold in hospitals. It certainly would be of concern if it became established. The lethal nature of the new strain of MRSA was demonstrated two years ago when a physically fit young soldier became infected after grazing his leg while out running on Woodbury Common, Devon. Richard Campbell, 18, a Royal Marine recruit, rapidly developed swelling in both legs, became unable to walk and died two days later. A 28-year-old woman also died after picking up the bug in her local gym.MRSA is carried on the skin of one in three healthy people and can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. The bugs do not usually cause problems in those with healthy immune systems, but the PVL strain is more toxic.

It can enter the body through a scratch or pimple and can develop into necrotising fasciitis, the so-called flesh-eating bug, which caused a nationwide panic when a cluster of cases struck in Gloucester in the early 1990s. In rare cases, it spreads to the lungs, causing pneumonia and death. There were 13 cases of skin infections caused by the strain reported in 2005 in England and Wales.

The HPA said the nurse died in September and had been well before developing blood poisoning and pneumonia after an operation at the hospital, which has not been named. The source of the outbreak is thought to have been a patient who died on the same ward several months earlier. Investigations revealed the nurse had been infected with the PVL strain of MRSA and another nurse on the same ward who had a history of abscesses was also infected. It is likely the nurse who died was carrying the bug on her skin and it became a lethal infection when she had the operation.Further tests revealed that the toxic strain had also been transmitted to two nurses working on a neighbouring ward, one of whom had had a persistent eyelid infection for four months. It was also transmitted to two of the nurses' flatmates.

Evidence from the US shows that occurrence of the PVL strain has soared since 1998, when the first cluster was identified in North Dakota. Researchers in San Francisco studying the PVL strain collected 6,000 cases in a year; they had expected 200.The Communicable Disease Report says there have been 12 reports worldwide of the PVL strains of MRSA transmitted in hospitals. This change in the epidemiology of MRSA demands increased vigilance among healthcare personnel, it says.Angela Kearns, an MRSA expert at the HPA, said: When people contract PVL-producing strains of MRSA, they usually experience a skin infection such as a boil or abscess. Most infections can be treated with everyday antibiotics but occasionally a more severe infection will occur. The PVL strain of Staphylococcus aureus was identified in the 1930s and accounted for 60 per cent of all staph infections before 1960. It was almost eliminated by antibiotic methicillin in 1961, but has resurged, linked to the growth of MRSA.

Cleaning up their acts

Government guidelines urge doctors and nurses to wash their hands thoroughly between each patient. But a recent study by researchers from the University of Hertfordshire showed that 88 per cent of staff failed to wash properly, even when dealing with infected patients. A separate study said efforts to tackle infection rates by improving the cleanliness of wards were failing because of poor hygiene. The British Medical Association has suggested doing away with superfluous items of clothing such as ties may help. The Brighton and Sussex Hospital Trust - which has one of the highest rates of infections - recently told staff to avoid wearing ties and jewellery.

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Iran seeks to replace dollar with euro by Hiedeh Farmani
Mon Dec 18, 6:49 AM ET

TEHRAN (AFP) -Iran has announced it would replace the dollar with the euro in foreign transactions and state-held foreign assets, in an apparent response to mounting US pressure on its banking system. The government has ordered the central bank to replace the dollar with the euro to limit the problems of the executive organs in commercial transactions, government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham told reporters. We will also employ this change for Iranian assets (in dollars) held abroad.Amid US allegations that Tehran funds militant groups and is seeking a nuclear weapon, reports have suggested the US treasury has put major pressure on European banking giants to halt transactions involving Iranian clients.Bankers in Iran have complained in recent weeks that it was becoming increasingly difficult to receive Iranian-held money denominated in dollars from European bank accounts.

They said that this was because of US pressure on European banking giants not to allow dollar-denominated funds to be sent into, or out of, the Islamic republic.Elham implied Monday the move would apply to oil revenues from the world's number four crude producer, although it would be difficult for Iran to force oil buyers to pay for all of its crude oil in euros.Foreign income sources and oil revenues will be calculated in euros and we will receive them in euros in order to put an end to our dependence on the dollar, Elham said.In reality, Iran could still receive payment for oil in dollars and then convert it into euros for the state budget. The move comes amid mounting pressure from the United States for the UN Security Council to agree sanctions against Iran over its controversial nuclear programme.Elham added that Iran's budget would in future be calculated in euros.Until now the budget has been calculated according to revenues in dollars, but this calculation will now change, he said.Economy Minister Davoud Danesh Jafari had already said in November that Iran would carry out transactions with currencies other than the dollar and its use of the greenback would drop to a minimum level.

Morteza Tamadon, a member of the government's budget and planning commission, said the government was looking to reduce its dependence on the dollar due to the greenback's recent slump as well as because of US pressure.Iran wants to reduce this vulnerability, he said, adding that the most reasonable option for the government would be to use a basket mixing both currencies.

This is a political manoeuvre as a reaction to the US ban on dollar transactions with Iran, said leading economist Mohammad Reza Behzadian. However he cast doubt on whether Iran would ever be able to demand that all foreign exchange payments for its oil be made in euros.Iran has said that 60 percent of oil sales are already being carried out in dollars. I suppose the government would keep the remaining amount in dollars because it has to. The exchange of petrodollars into euros would be very costly for Iran, inflicting high money loss during the procedure. The dollar is very much preferred by foreign sellers. It's mainly a political move, Investec analyst Bruce Evers told AFP in London. But also they may feel, possibly rightly so, that the euro is a stronger currency, and that with the dollar as weak as it is they're losing out and it could help them recoup some of the lost revenues.

At the Singapore G7 summit of the world's most industrialised nations in September, US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson called for a tough stance from the world's financial leaders against Tehran. He said the United States had evidence that major banks had become inadvertently implicated in terrorist financing, adding that US authorities were therefore engaged in an educational campaign. The United States broke off relations with Iran after the 1979 storming of the US embassy in Tehran by student radicals, and ties have remained frozen ever since.

Russia to launch int'l uranium enrichment center in January
www.chinaview.cn 2006-12-19 06:44:52

MOSCOW, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) An international uranium enrichment center will start operations in Siberia by the end of January next year, Russia's nuclear energy chief said on Monday. Early this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev jointly proposed setting up uranium enrichment centers to provide nuclear fuel to countries with nuclear energy programs under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. All conditions for the center's work will have been created by late January. An intergovernmental agreement with Kazakhstan will be signed at the end of this year, Sergei Kiriyenko, head of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying. The center is to be located at a plant in the Siberian city of Angarsk.Kiriyenko said new facilities could be built in the future. So far, no new centrifuge is being planned, he added.Uranium enriched to low levels can be used as fuel for nuclear power plants, but highly enriched uranium can be used to make the core of a nuclear bomb. Abbas: New Elections; Hamas: Declaration of Civil War
By Ezra HaLevi & Nissan Ratzlav-Katz (INN)

On the heels of violent internecine clashes, threats and assassination attempts, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas called for early elections on Saturday. Hamas called it a coup. Abbas (Abu Mazen) made the statement before Fatah officials and the media in Ramallah after days of leaks that he intended to do so. Abbas announced, I decided to call for early presidential and legislative elections. Abbas insisted that his demand to repeat the elections is a democratic one. Saying that the people are the source of governmental power, the PA leader added, Let the people have their say and decide. I will talk as quickly as possible with the central elections commission to launch the preparations for the ballot. He did not provide a date for the elections. In addition to his role as PA president, Abbas is the leader of the Fatah organization in the Authority. Since elections in January, the Islamist Hamas terror organization has had control of the PA legislative body, currently headed by Ismail Haniyeh. Fatah, a controlling faction of the PLO, has continuously weakened since the death of Yasser Arafat. The tension between Fatah and Hamas over power and funding in the PA has spilled into violent street clashes, assassination attempts, political-military manipulations and premeditated murders.

Regarding the possibility that a move towards elections at this juncture will drive the PA into all-out civil war between Fatah and Hamas militias and their supporters, Abbas said, Despite the suffering, the pain, the confrontations - whoever is responsible for them - we will not allow ourselves to sink into a civil war. The PA chief went on to slam Hamas for ruining the gains made with Israel's unilateral withdrawal from Gaza. We dreamed that the minute Israel would withdraw, the territory would flourish and there would be dozens of development projects, but this dream vanished, he said. Why? Because we insisted on shooting Kassams and thus missed our dream to turn the settlements into centers for investment and growth.Abbas laid the blame for the overall deteriorating security situation in the Palestinian Authority, as well as the ongoing economic crisis there, at the feet of the Hamas government. In that regard, he also criticized the kidnapping of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit because of its destructive consequences for the PA, including 500 deaths and thousands injured. Abbas called for an end to rocket attacks on Israelis, as well, because it leads to the cessation of investments in the Gaza Strip. One of the factors in the PA's economic deterioration, Abbas noted, is the Hamas's refusal to abide by international agreements, to recognize Israel and to condemn terrorist attacks. Internally, Abbas said that the Hamas's refusal to recognize the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people has led to its political isolation.

Hamas Responds

The Palestinian government rejects this call for early elections and considers it a coup against Palestinian legitimacy and the will of the Palestinian people, the Hamas government stated following Abbas's statement.Hamas parliamentary chairman Dr. Khaled Al-Haya said Abbas had declared war not only on Hamas, but on Allah. Fellow Hamas official, PA Foreign Minister Mahmoud Al-Zahar said Abbas had declared a civil war, but agreed new elections should be held - for PA president. If he has tired of the presidency and leadership [Abbas] can step aside and hold new presidential elections, Al-Zahar said.Other PA ministers called for a government of national unity; however, negotiations to that end in recent weeks have not produced any results.

Abbas Defends Move

This is a constitutional right, Abbas said, defending his dissolution of the government on PA-controlled TV. I can do it whenever I want. The dismissal of the government is not a declaration of civil war like Al-Zahar said. They don't scare us.In any event, PA representative Saeb Erekat told Reuters, Technically, the elections cannot be held before mid-2007.

Street Battles Escalate

Immediately following Abbas's declaration, thousands of members of Fatah's various Tanzim and Al-Aksa Brigades terror groups marched though the streets of Gaza and Shechem (Nablus), firing their rifles in the air. In Rafiah, Khan Younis and elsewhere, armed Fatah and Hamas terrorists exchanged shots and opened fire on crowds of stone-throwers, as well. At least 20 people were wounded by gunfire. Also on Saturday, a Fatah militia spokesman threatened to kill Hamas leaders and ministers in the event that Fatah's Gaza strongman Muhammad Dahlan, or any other senior Fatah leader, is attacked. The spokesman said that he had inside information regarding a Hamas plot to murder Fatah leaders. Hamas spokesmen had blamed Dahlan for an attempted assassination of PA Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh at the Gaza-Egypt crossing two days ago, saying they knew who was responsible and that those individuals would not sleep peacefully again. On Friday, at least 31 Hamas members were wounded when Fatah men under Abbas's control opened fire at a Hamas rally in Ramallah.

US, UK Favor Fatah

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she would be requesting tens of millions of dollars from Congress to further arm and train militias loyal to Abbas. British Prime Minister Tony Blair also called upon the international community to empower Abbas through funding him and arming his men.In recent months, far more attacks have been attempted and carried out by Fatah's terror groups than Hamas.

U.S. weapons prompt Hamas arms race?
Worries ammo flowing into Gaza to be used against Jewish state
December 18, 2006,By Aaron Klein,WorldNetDaily.com

TEL AVIV – The United States for the past few days has been providing arms to militant groups from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party to bolster it against rival Hamas factions, WND has learned. According to Israeli and Palestinian security officials, the U.S. weapons shipments have prompted an arms race with Hamas, which has been smuggling into the Gaza Strip larger than usual quantities of weaponry from neighboring Egypt. The Israeli security officials expressed concern some of the weapons obtained by Fatah and Hamas could be used in attacks against Israeli troops operating in Gaza or in raids of Israeli military stations and communities near the Gaza Strip. There is a massive increase in weapons brought in (to Gaza) since last week, said an Israeli security official. In a WND interview earlier this month, a senior Fatah militant told WND any U.S. aid and weapons given to his security organization will be used to attack Jews and fight Israeli occupation.

According to Palestinian officials, the U.S. last week provided Abbas Force 17 security detail with 250 new assault rifles and 5,000 rounds of ammunition. Israel aided in the delivery of the weapons to Force 17 militants in Gaza associated with Fatah strongman Mahmoud Dahlan, the officials said. The Palestinian officials said the U.S. has provided at least 1,000 rifles this month and that more weapons shipments are expected this week. Force 17 serves as Abbas' personal security detail and as de facto police units in the West Bank and Gaza. Many of its members also openly serve as militants in the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group.

Force 17 and Hamas have been clashing in Gaza since Abbas this weekend called for new Palestinian elections. Abbas' move was widely scene as an attempt to dismantle the Hamas-led PA. Yesterday, the convoy of Hamas Foreign Minister Mahmoud al-Zahar came under fire as it passed through Gaza City. Members of Hamas accused Fatah of trying to assassinate al-Zahar.

Hours later, Hamas assaulted a Force 17 base in the Gaza Strip just outside Abbas' office and Gaza residence. Abbas was in the West Bank at the time. A presidential guard official denounced the Hamas attack as an assault on the symbol of Palestinian legitimacy. WND reported earlier this month U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stated in a meeting with Abbas that the U.S. would fulfill an earlier pledge to bolster Force 17 with American training and with new weapons, including 6,000 assault rifles. The U.S. reportedly aims to enhance security forces associated with Abbas against Hamas in Gaza. Hamas maintains a 6,000-strong militia in Gaza that has several times engaged in firefights with Fatah. Hamas and Fatah last engaged in heavy fighting in the Gaza Strip and West Bank in October after negotiations to establish a national unity government between the two appeared to have fallen through.

A senior Palestinian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told WND that Fatah security officials noted in the October firefights Hamas members used weaponry more advanced than what was known to have been in the Hamas arsenal, including newer styles of assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. The official said Abbas requested more weapons from the U.S. According to multiple reports, the U.S. agreed to aid Force 17. The U.S. considers Fatah moderate, while it labels Hamas a terror group. Last month, the New York Times reported the U.S. proposed expanding Abbas' Force 17 from 3,500 men to 6,000 as part of a $26 million plan to strengthen the Palestinian leader. The Associated Press, Haaretz and Israel's leading Yediot Aharonot daily reported new training facilities for Force 17 are slated to be set up in Jericho and in Gaza, at a cost of $2 million each, according to the U.S. proposal. Palestinian sources told Haaretz the training of select numbers of special Force 17 forces started already in September under the guidance of an American military instructor.

The last known weapons transfer to Force 17 took place in May and reportedly consisted of 3,000 assault rifles and more than 1 million rounds of ammunition. At first, the U.S., Israel and the PA denied the reports of the weapons transfer, but Olmert in June announced he had approved the shipment of U.S. weapons and ammunition, explaining the transfer was meant for Abbas' personal protection. I did this because we are running out of time and we need to help Abu Mazen, Olmert told reporters. The shipment required Israeli consent to pass through checkpoints. It was delivered by a convoy protected by the Israeli Defense Forces, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials involved in the transfer. Militant leader tells WND rifles provided for Abbas security to be used against Jews Earlier this month Abu Yousuf, a senior member of Force 17, told WND any new U.S. weapons transfers would be used against Israel. Abu Yousuf, like many Force 17 members, is also openly a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, the declared military wing of Abbas' Fatah party. Abu Yousuf hinted new weapons provided by the U.S. to Force 17 could be shared with the Al Aqsa Brigades.

These weapons will put to use against the Israelis, said Abu Yousuf. Force 17 is proud that we were the first to lead the Palestinian people during tough times such as resistance operations (against the Israeli army during large-scale operations in northern Samaria in 2002). We will also be the first to lead the Palestinians in the current struggle against Israeli occupation. Many have noted the connections between Force 17 and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror organization. In June, Abbas appointed senior Brigades leader Mahmoud Damra as commander of Force 17. Damra, who was arrested by Israel last month, was on the Jewish state's most-wanted list of terrorists. He is accused of masterminding a string of attacks and of leading a terror cell based in Ramallah allegedly responsible for scores of shootings against Israelis. Together with the Islamic Jihad terror group, the Brigades has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing inside Israel the past two years, including an attack in Tel Aviv in April that killed American teenager Daniel Wultz and nine Israelis. The Brigades also has carried out scores of deadly shooting and rocket attacks against Israeli civilians in recent months. Asked to confirm other Force 17 officers also are members of the Brigades, Abu Yousuf replied: During our official service and during our job hours we are soldiers. What we do in our free time it is our business. Of course, as members of Fatah, some of us are members in the Brigades and we take part in the defense and protection of our people and in the fight against the Israeli occupation. The State Department includes the Brigades on its official list of international terror organization.

North Korea insists on nuclear status By BURT HERMAN, Associated Press Writer Dec 18,06

BEIJING -North Korea insisted Monday it be treated as a full-fledged nuclear power as six-nation arms talks convened for the first time since its atomic test, but the United States said time was running out for Pyongyang to dismantle its nuclear arsenal and threatened more sanctions. U.S. officials dismissed the communist regime's opening comments as unsurprising rhetoric, while the chief American delegate said it was time to move forward on disarmament. The supply of our patience may have exceeded the international demand for that patience, and we should be a little less patient and pick up the pace and work faster, envoy Christopher Hill told reporters. The resumption of the talks — consisting of the United States, China, Japan, Russia and the two Koreas — came after a more than 13-month break during which the communist North tested fired a new long-range missile in July and then set off an underground atomic blast Oct. 9.

North Korea had refused to return to the multinational talks in anger over the U.S. blacklisting of a Macau bank where Pyongyang deposited some $24 million, alleging the bank was complicit in the North's counterfeiting of $100 bills and money laundering to sell weapons of mass destruction. On Monday, the North again called for Washington to lift those restrictions and demanded U.N. sanctions imposed for its nuclear test explosion be lifted, according to a summary of its opening statement released by one of the delegations.Washington previously agreed to discuss the financial issue at separate talks alongside the nuclear meeting. The North's experts were expected to arrive in Beijing on Tuesday, although Treasury officials in Washington said a time and a place for the talks had not been set.The North demanded again Monday that it be given a nuclear reactor for electricity generation and also that its struggling economy get other help in meeting its energy needs until the reactor is built.

Pyongyang repeated its assertion that it be considered a nuclear weapons power and that the talks be transformed into negotiations over mutual arms reductions in which it would be accorded equal footing with the United States. If its demands aren't met, the North said, it would increase its nuclear arsenal, according to the summary. But the United States and other countries stressed the main focus would be on getting the North Korean regime to give up atomic arms.We would like denuclearization via a diplomatic negotiation. If they don't want that, we're quite prepared to go the other road ... which is a pretty tough road, Hill said, implying North Korea could face further international sanctions. In Washington, U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns brushed off the North's opening salvo as no surprise. If past is prologue, I mean that's the way the North Koreans operate, he said. Let's see where we are by the end of the week.Burns said the talks were expected to last three or four days, with Hill expected back in Washington before Christmas.Hill said he expected to have talks with the North's delegation, but added that the U.S. would not give up the multi-nation negotiations to engage in one-to-one talks with Pyongyang.

The reason, he said, is that we want other countries to take responsibility for their security in the region, namely China, one of the North's closest allies.Japanese negotiator Kenichiro Sasae told reporters that North Korea would have to give ground. The position of the North Korean delegation is wide apart from the rest of us and we cannot accept it, he said.In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his government expected North Korea to be more flexible. North Korea should take a step forward toward the dismantlement of its nuclear weapons, he said. The North pledged in September 2005 to abandon its nuclear arms program in exchange for economic aid and security guarantees, and Hill said the other countries at the talks hoped to lay out a plan to form working groups to discuss its implementation. What I want to see from the North Koreans is a willingness to get on with implementing their elements of the September agreement, Hill said. Our expectation is to get this done this week. China, the North's key benefactor, noted the sides had some very pronounced differences but pushed for results.

We have finished the stage of commitment for commitment and now should follow the principle of action for action, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu told reporters, echoing phrasing from the earlier agreement. South Korean nuclear negotiator Chun Yung-woo proposed that the parties push for implementing the 2005 agreement within a few months. We urged North Korea to take bold and substantial initial steps to dismantle its nuclear program and stressed that the other five countries corresponding measures should also be bold and substantial, he told reporters. The latest North Korean nuclear crisis erupted in 2002 after U.S. officials said the North had admitted to a secret nuclear program in violation of a 1994 disarmament deal, leading to the communist nation's withdrawal from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. North Korea is believed to have enough radioactive material to make about a half-dozen atomic bombs, and its main nuclear reactor remains in operation to create more weapons-grade plutonium. AP writers Audra Ang, Bo-mi Lim, Alexa Olesen and Mari Yamaguchi contributed to this report.

Bush signs nuclear deal with India By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer Mon Dec 18, 4:27 PM ET

WASHINGTON -President Bush signed legislation on Monday to let America share its nuclear know-how and fuel with India even though New Delhi refuses to sign the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. By helping India expand its use of safe nuclear energy, this bill lays the foundation for a new strategic partnership between our two nations that will help ease India's demands for fossil fuels and ease pressure on global markets, Bush said in a bill-signing ceremony at the White House. The bill carves out an exemption in U.S. law to allow civilian nuclear trade with India in exchange for Indian safeguards and inspections at its 14 civilian nuclear plants. Eight military plants, however, would remain off-limits to the inspections. The House and Senate had overwhelmingly approved the nuclear cooperation bill, giving Bush a foreign policy victory at a time when the administration is struggling to come up with a new approach to the unpopular war in Iraq

Critics worry the agreement could spark a nuclear arms race in Asia by boosting India's atomic arsenal. They also argue that the measure undermines international efforts to prevent states like Iran and North Korea from acquiring nuclear weapons. In Beijing on Monday, North Korea defiantly declared itself a nuclear power at the start of the first full international arms talks since its atomic test in July and threatened to increase its arsenal if its demands were not met.The White House said it was willing to make an exception for India, the world's largest democracy, because it had protected its nuclear technology and not been a proliferator.

India has conducted its civilian nuclear energy program in a safe and responsible way for decades, Bush said. Now, in return for access to American technology, India has agreed to open its civilian nuclear power program to international inspection. The administration also argued it was a good deal because while India's military plants that work with nuclear material would not be subjected to inspections, there would be international oversight for the civilian program, which has been secret since India entered the nuclear age in 1974.After 30 years outside the system, India will now operate its civilian nuclear energy program under internationally accepted guidelines and the world is going to be safer as a result, the president said. The Bush administration said the pact deepens ties with a democratic Asia power, but was not designed as a counterweight to the rising power of China. We don't have a policy that would build up a relationship with India to contain China, Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns told reporters before the bill signing.

Bush said the law would make it possible for India, the world's fifth-largest consumer of energy, to reduce emissions and improve its environment. India, whose demand for electricity is expected to double by 2015, currently produced nearly 70 percent of its electricity by burning coal, which produces air pollution and greenhouse gases. The deal also could be a boon for American companies that have been barred from selling reactors and material to India where the economy has more than doubled in size since 1991.In New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh defended the nuclear deal, rejecting strong opposition from critics that it would lead to the dismantling of India's atomic weapons. He said he had some concerns about the legislation, but that they would be dealt with during technical negotiations on an overall U.S.-India cooperation agreement. The United States has assured us that the bill would enable it to meet its commitments made in agreements struck in July 2005 and in March by Bush and Singh.

Singh said India would not accept new conditions and its nuclear weapons program would not be subject to interference of any kind because the agreement with the United States dealt with civil nuclear cooperation.Earlier, opposition leader L.K. Advani of the Bharatiya Janata Party said India should not accept the U.S. legislation, saying that the deal would prevent India from conducting nuclear tests in the future. India conducted its first nuclear test in 1974 and followed it up with a series of nuclear tests in 1998.

The primary objective is to cap, roll back and ultimately eliminate its (India's) nuclear weapons capability, Advani warned. Before civil nuclear trade can begin, several hurdles remain. American and Indian officials need to work out a separate technical nuclear cooperation agreement, expected to be finished next year. The two countries must now obtain an exception for India in the rules of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, an assembly of nations that export nuclear material. Indian officials must also negotiate a safeguard agreement with the IAEA.

N'west Storm Kills Northwest Struggles to Stay Warm After Storm Leaves More Than 1.5M Without Power, Kills 6 DEC 16,2006,By GENE JOHNSON

SEATTLE Dec 16, 2006 (AP)— Residents of the Pacific Northwest struggled to stay warm Saturday after the worst windstorm in more than a decade knocked out power to more than 1.5 million homes and businesses and killed at least six people. More than 600,000 customers in Washington and Oregon still had no power Saturday, and utilities said some might have to wait into next week for their lights to go back on. Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire declared a state of emergency, and with temperatures expected to drop over the weekend, officials warned people not to use outdoor grills, propane heaters or other carbon monoxide-producing equipment indoors.Firefighters in Kent found 33 people from four families suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning Friday night, fire Capt. Kyle Ohashi said. They had taken their barbecues inside to cook or heat their apartments as temperatures dipped into the 30s.All were expected to survive after treatment, Ohashi said.

In Oregon, a family of six was sickened by carbon monoxide from a generator set up in a garage in Gresham, police said. Three children were hospitalized in critical condition late Friday, while one child and both parents were listed in good condition. Wind gusted to a record 69 mph early Friday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, breaking the old mark of 65 mph set in 1993. Wind was clocked at 113 mph near Mount Rainier.Power was knocked out at one of the airport's concourses, canceling dozens of flights. Flights were also canceled at Portland International Airport in Oregon, and Amtrak canceled service between Seattle and Portland because downed trees and mudslides blocked the tracks. Two people were killed in Washington in traffic accidents involving windblown trees, while one died after getting trapped in her flooded basement. A fourth person was killed in his sleep by a tree that fell on his home. On the Oregon coast, an elderly couple died in a fire caused by candles they were using for light. Puget Sound Energy, Washington's largest private utility, had restored power to about 200,000 customers overnight but 500,000 were still without power Saturday, company spokeswoman Dorothy Bracken said.

It would be several days definitely through the weekend, before everyone was restored, PSE spokeswoman Martha Monfried said. The utility had lost more than half of its transmission system, and crews struggled in the mountains to reach downed lines that carry the electricity from Columbia River dams. More than 60,500 customers of Seattle City Light remained without power Saturday, down from a peak of 175,000, and 15,000 were still blacked out in the Snohomish County Public Utility District north of Seattle. In Oregon, Portland General Electric said it had about 82,000 customers without power Saturday morning, while Pacific Power had said late Friday it was down to 53,000. The storm was the most intense to hit the region since the Inauguration Day storm of Jan. 20, 1993, which killed five people and caused about $130 million in damage, said Clifford F. Mass, a University of Washington atmospheric sciences professor. The Associated Press.

Nine New Zealanders Injured While Fighting Fires in Australia
By Tracy Withers

Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Nine New Zealand firefighters are recovering after being caught in a bushfire yesterday in Australia's Victoria state, the Department of Sustainability and Environment said. The nine are part of a contingent of 47 New Zealanders who have joined local crews battling fires in the northeast and eastern regions of the state. Four men were seriously injured and airlifted to Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, the department said in a statement faxed to Bloomberg News. The others were treated locally for minor injuries. About 3,000 firefighters are battling the blazes, which have burned about 600,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) in the state, The fires are located in national parks and state forest areas, some of which have been closed to motorists. The New Zealanders were combating a spot fire away from the main blaze, when the main fire increased in intensity, the department said. The group took evasive action and the nine, who decided they couldn't escape, took shelter in a ditch. The men were experienced firefighters and two had experience with bushfires in the state in 2003, the department said. An investigation will be conducted into the incident, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported on its Web site. Temple Israel adds light to Hanukkah,Hourlong celebration focuses on fun for families
By Connie Bloom,Beacon Journal staff writer

The rabbi wore a dress, the service was projected in PowerPoint and eBay appeared in the lyrics of the Dreidel Song. The ancient story of Hanukkah unfurled in a decidedly 21st-century celebration at Temple Israel Friday night.I love this holiday so much, Janet Fox said. I love it because it's the Festival of Lights. I love the warmth of the lights, the children singing, the smell of the latkes. My children are big now and I still get excited. The hourlong gathering of about 350 was more of a show than a service, Rabbi David Lipper said.He billed it as a Mishpachapalooza, a Yiddish twist meaning family-palooza.It's a family-friendly show, he said. We'll have some worship, light our menorahs and celebrate the holiday. Our goal is to make it as fun for families as possible. The words to the songs, random photographs and prayers appeared like magic in a colorful screen presentation designed for the kids. ``I have a little dreidel, I made it out of steel, I sold it on eBay, I got an awesome deal, they sang of the traditional children's toy top.

Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Maccabees, the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days. It is a celebration of the redemption of a people faced with oppression, Lipper said. The message is of religious freedom.... It's a message of light over darkness. The holiday is customarily observed in Jewish households by lighting a candle at sundown on each of the festival's eight nights.Hanukkah is really a home-centered celebration, not an organized religious celebration, as in other times of the year with special liturgy, Lipper said. So much of what happens at Hanukkah happens in the home.Since the holiday fell on the Sabbath, families flocked to the temple and two sets of candles were lighted.Tonight is out of the box, Lipper said. He dressed as Judah Maccabee and rented his costume from Mr. Fun to tell one of three stories in the program.

It's a tan dress, an Arab dress from biblical times.... The story I'm telling is a true story that comes from the Holocaust.... It's a message of hope.Meanwhile, a feast with latkes -- potato pancakes -- and traditional Jewish delicacies was waiting in the banquet rooms.I never compared Hanukkah to Christmas, Fox said, yet they embody the same joyful happy feelings. You can reach Connie Bloom at 330-996-3568 or cbloom@ thebeaconjournal.com.

Turkey and Israel agree on pipeline project
Seen linking Black and Red seas to route energy exports from Russia and the Caspian basin to markets across Asia Dec. 16, 2006. 01:00 AM,ORHAN COSKUN,REUTERS NEWS AGENCY

ANKARA—Turkey and Israel have agreed to build a pipeline linking the Black and Red seas, Turkey's energy minister said yesterday, in a move that will boost the Jewish state's energy security and Turkey's role as an energy hub.The pipeline will transport oil, natural gas, electricity and water, Hilmi Guler, told reporters.Turkey, a candidate for European Union membership, aspires to become a hub for energy exports from Russia and the Caspian basin to markets in Europe and beyond.Turkey is also one of the few Muslim countries to foster strong trade and security ties with the Jewish state.Guler gave no price for the project but said Turkey was in talks with Russia and other countries on participation in it.The project's feasibility study will be completed in six months and then implementation will begin, Guler said.

The pipeline is an extension of a 550-kilometre line that will link Turkey's Black Sea port of Samsun and Ceyhan on its Mediterranean coast. Guler gave no details about the route of the pipeline beyond Ceyhan, but Turkey's Radikal newspaper said it would extend to Israel's Ashkelon, joining up there with an existing pipeline to the Israeli Red Sea port of Eilat.Officials have previously said the pipeline would be undersea, avoiding a land route through Syria and Lebanon.Calling the Black Sea-Red Sea link the project of the century, Radikal said this would allow the long-term export of oil via the Red Sea to Asian markets. It would open up a cheaper export route to Asia for Russia's Urals crude from the Black Sea, which currently has to pass through the costly shipping choke points of the Bosphorous and the Suez Canal on its way to refiners in the east. The pipeline's feasibility will depend on the transit cost and how much crude can be exported east. Jordan and the Palestinian Territories are potential customers for water, Guler said.

6 The tabernacles of Edom,and the Ishmaelites;(ARABS) of Moab, and the Hagarenes;

Iran warns of painful revenge if sanctions imposed Fri Dec 15, 12:51 PM ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) -Iran will exact painful revenge on countries opposed to its nuclear program if the U.N. Security Council imposes sanctions on Tehran, the country's chief nuclear negotiator said on Friday.Imposing sanctions on Iran will not help resolve the issue, Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, told reporters. If they want to deprive Iran of its nuclear work they are making a big mistake. If they want to act in a way to decrease our capabilities through sanctions we will be obliged to use painful methods in return, he said without elaborating.Iran has previously said its retaliation against a punitive U.N. resolution could range from reviewing cooperation with the U.N.'s atomic watchdog to restricting its crude oil exports.Iran says its nuclear program will be used only for peaceful ends, such as electricity generation, and not to make bombs. It has refused to obey U.N. Security Council demands that it halt all sensitive nuclear work, such as uranium enrichment. After weeks of talks permanent Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany are close to agreement on a draft U.N. resolution against Iran.

The draft resolution includes a ban on exports or imports of materials and technology related to uranium enrichment as well as ballistic missile weapons delivery systems.Diplomats say Russia, which along with China has blocked U.S. and European efforts to impose tougher sanctions on Iran, still wants some changes to the draft, particularly clauses imposing a travel ban on some Iranian officials.Larijani played down the impact of the sanctions being contemplated by the six world powers. These sanctions include sensitive missile and nuclear equipment which we don't have and we are not after ... This is mainly a psychological war, he said.

Iran Prez: I'll Share My Nuke Technology

The Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to transfer to regional states its valuable experience and achievements in the field of peaceful nuclear technology as a clean energy source and as a replacement for oil.President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

(AP) President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday during a meeting with top Kuwaiti envoy that Iran is ready to transfer its nuclear technology to neighboring countries, state-run television reported. The Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to transfer to regional states its valuable experience and achievements in the field of peaceful nuclear technology as a clean energy source and as a replacement for oil, the state quoted Ahmadinejad as telling Mohammed Zefollah Shirar, a top advisor to Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.The broadcast said Shirer is carrying a written message from the Emir to Ahmadinejad but didn't elaborate on the contents of the message. The television said Ahmadinejad also welcomed a decision by Iran's Arab neighbors to the south to pursue peaceful nuclear technology programs.

Such a technological transfer would be legal as long as it is between signatory-states to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and as long as the International Atomic Energy Agency that monitors the treaty was informed of the transfer. Iran is currently at odds with the United States and its European allies who accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is aimed solely at the peaceful production of nuclear energy, not bomb. United Nations Sanctions Closer To Resolution Meanwhile, on Friday Britain said that a deal is emerging on a U.N. resolution that would impose sanctions on Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment, but Russia remains opposed to a European- and U.S.-backed travel ban on senior Iranian officials.

Ambassadors from six key nations drafting the resolution — Britain, France, Germany, the US, Russia and China — reported some progress at the latest round of closed-door talks on Friday. Britain's U.N. Ambassador, Emyr Jones Parry, said he thinks a deal is developing. On all of the elements that were contentious, there is now a way through them. It's a question of consolidating the progress we made this afternoon, he said. He said he expects the resolution to be finalized by Tuesday, but Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said things are not ready yet to put into a final form. We have made some modest progress, but there are some things to be discussed, Churkin said. So we are going back to the capitals and meeting Monday morning.

The latest draft would order all countries to ban the supply of specified materials and technology that could contribute to Iran's nuclear and missile programs and impose a travel ban and asset freeze on top figures in the country's nuclear and missile programs. They have been named on a U.N. list. Churkin said earlier this week that Moscow believes the travel ban is unnecessary.
Acting U.S. ambassador Alejandro Wolff said on Friday that the United States is still fighting for a travel ban which he called a top priority. He said the United States also wants the resolution adopted as soon as possible. The six countries offered Iran a package of economic incentives and political rewards in June if it agreed to consider a long-term moratorium on uranium enrichment and commit to a freeze on enrichment before talks on its nuclear programme. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly and defiantly said his country would continue enrichment and is not intimidated by the possibility of sanctions.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is aimed solely at the peaceful production of nuclear energy, but the United States and Europeans suspect Tehran's ultimate goal is the production of nuclear weapons. With Iran refusing to comply with a Security Council deadline of August 31, 2006, to stop enrichment, Britain and France circulated a draft sanctions resolution in late October.
The draft has been revised to specify in greater detail exactly what materials and technology would be prohibited from being supplied to Iran and to name those individuals and companies that would be affected. The revised draft also removed, to meet Russian and Chinese concerns that the initial resolution was too broad, reference to a nuclear facility being built by the Russians at Bushehr, Iran. The facility, expected to go on line in late 2007, would be Iran's first atomic power plant. The Associated Press.
