Moderate quake rocks Indonesian province Wed Jan 17, 12:40 AM ET

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A moderate earthquake rocked parts of Indonesia's Papua province on Wednesday but there were no reports of any damage.

The 5.9 magnitude quake hit 80 miles southwest of Jayapura, the provincial capital, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.A massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004, killed more than 131,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province alone and left half a million homeless.

26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

23 dead in Oklahoma as winter storms spread south JAN 17,07

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Freezing winter storms across the central U.S. plains killed at least 23 people in Oklahoma and snarled transportation across the country's midsection on Wednesday, officials said. The storms were part of a system that has moved across the central United States over the past week. While forecasters expect the cold weather to retreat from the Gulf Coast on Thursday, forecasters expect more snow and rain across Kansas, Oklahoma and northern Texas by Friday. In Oklahoma, the southeastern part of the state was the hardest hit. At least 23 people in Oklahoma were killed in car accidents on icy roads, state officials said. Many of McAlester,Oklahoma's 18,000 residents were huddling in church shelters because the town has been without power since Friday. The U.S. Army Ammunition plant in McAlester may take two weeks to restore full operations after losing power on Friday, a spokesman told the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. The plant is the leading maker of precision-guided bombs for the U.S. military.Hundreds of flights into and out of Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and the Tulsa, Oklahoma, airports were canceled. Flights at Houston and Oklahoma City airports were departing and arriving, but airport closures across the United States caused some cancellations.Sections of Houston were hit by the first ice storm in a decade, slowing traffic on the city's expansive highway system.

Texas set a winter power consumption record on Tuesday as freezing temperatures and precipitation covered much of the state.

DTN Meteorlogix forecaster Joel Burgio said the looming storm, expected to arrive on Friday, could be somewhat weaker than the latest one, but there was still chance it could gain strength.I think the chance of a heavy storm has diminished somewhat from this morning, Burgio said. It could change if it slows. Right now, it looks like it should move through rather quickly.Meteorlogix expects 2 to 6 inches of snow to fall from the Texas panhandle to the Kansas border, while southern Kansas could get 1 to 3 inches this weekend. There is less of a cold dome associated with this, so it should be either snow or rain and not a lot of ice, Burgio said. For plains states cattle producers, this week's storms have killed thousands of young cattle out to pasture and stressed older cattle that had to trudge through muddy feedlot pens.

Wintry precipitation eyes Southeast Senior Meteorologist, The Weather Channel JAN 17,07

South

Parts of the Southeast are likely to be plagued by light freezing rain (icing) tomorrow as a storm center cranks up off the Atlantic coast. The most vulnerable areas would appear to be northeast Georgia and the western Carolinas (see Storm Watch). Farther east, just plain ole rain is forecast for southeast Georgia and the eastern Carolinas. Elsewhere in the South, isolated showers are possible along the Gulf Coast. Interior Texas could see some patchy sleet or freezing drizzle, but nothing to compare with recent days. High temperatures are forecast to range from the 30s in the piedmont of the Southeast, and parts of Texas and Oklahoma, to the 70s and low 80s over the southern two-thirds of the Florida Peninsula.

Northeast

Except for a light wintry mix of precipitation, or a mix with rain, moving into Virginia and parts of the Mid-Atlantic coast tomorrow, the Northeast should stay dry, and in New England, not nearly so cold as today. Highs are forecast to range from the teens in far northern Maine to the 40s along the Mid-Atlantic coast. Most of the region will top out in the 30s.

West

With only a few exceptions, most of the West will be dry tomorrow. A handful of showers, maybe mixed with snow, will dampen western Washington.

scattered late day showers could push into extreme southern New Mexico; and scattered snow flurries will reach from eastern Washington into northwest Montana. High temperatures are expected to range from the teens in much of the northern Rockies to the 60s along parts of the California coast and in Southern California and southwest Arizona.

Midwest

Gusty winds will kick up over the Great Plains and Midwest tomorrow, as will scattered snow showers and flurries from the eastern Plains to the Great Lakes (generally north of a St. Louis-Detroit line). No significant accumulations are forecast. High temperatures will range from the teens in much of North Dakota and far northern Minnesota to the 40s from southeast Missouri through the Ohio Valley and Kentucky.

Typhoon Muifa creating battering waves Tim Ballisty, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel Wed Jan 17, 7:19 AM ET

What started Tuesday innocently enough as a moderate tropical storm has become a small, but potent, typhoon east of the Philippines.

Typhoon Muifa (Moy-fa) became worthy of its prefix today when winds were estimated at near 105 mph. Muifa is at best meandering to the north while churning in the Philippine Sea just east of Manila. In fact, for all intents and purposes, the typhoon has stalled. Though forecast to move west over the islands, forward progression will be slow. Bad news for the island chain as flooding and mudslides will result from the copious amounts of rain expected to fall over the next 48 hours. There is no doubt that the large and powerful waves have been battering the eastern coast of the northern Philippines. The system is forecasted to weaken gradually over the next 5 days as it heads towards southern Vietnam. The Atlantic and eastern Pacific Basins remain quiet.

Scores die, crops devastated in harsh US winter storms JAN 17,07

CHICAGO (AFP) - Harsh winter weather dogged much of the United States, leaving scores of people dead, hundreds of thousands without electricity and jeopardizing
California's citrus crops.

At least 50 deaths were blamed on the storm, the majority in car accidents on icy roads, major US news media reported. Several were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning from malfunctioning generators and heaters after the power went out.A massive storm that began churning across the country on Friday brought ice, sleet, rain, flash floods and even a few tornadoes as it moved from the southwestern states of New Mexico and Texas to far northeastern Maine.A separate icy snap in normally balmy California led Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to warn that the region's citrus fruit industry could be devastated.Damage to the citrus industry alone is close to a billion dollars, Schwarzenegger said.California supplies nearly a quarter of citrus fruit sold in the United States, according to state agricultural authorities. Avocados, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, strawberries and cauliflower also grow in the state and have been affected by the freeze.

Low temperatures also struck the US northwest, where cleanup crews in Portland, Oregon on Wednesday focused on de-icing major roadways after the area was hit with up to 13 centimeters (five inches) of snow on Tuesday.Cars stuck in the snow were abandoned on Portland freeways, and transportation officials temporarily ordered all vehicles on the roads to use chains or snow tires.City officials and forecasters predicted a light dusting and were unprepared for the heavy snowfall, local news media reported. The sudden snowfall and slick roads also triggered a 30-car pileup on a major highway outside Seattle, Washington on Tuesday.Low temperatures will keep the snow and ice on the ground in the northwest at least until Friday, according to local forecasts. The storm that covered much of the Midwestern US was caused by a vast cold front that dropped temperatures by as much as 17 degrees C (30 degrees F) and brought wave after wave of freezing rain and sleet as it moved slowly eastward.

It weakened somewhat by early Wednesday, sparing the major East Coast cities of New York, Boston and Philadelphia from the worst of the ice and sleet.Schools and businesses remained closed in Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri where freezing rain and sleet knocked down trees and power lines and made driving conditions extremely dangerous.President George W. Bush declared an emergency in Oklahoma on Sunday, and Federal Emergency Management Agency workers were in the state handing out emergency supplies. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported more than 300 road accidents in which 14 people were killed and 128 people were hospitalized.Texas has still got all sorts of problems they have freezing rain, sleet and snow, said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the National Weather Service. In Oklahoma they have so many (power) lines down it's going to take a while to get things back up.The weather service has also issued flood warnings for the Mississippi River Valley from Louisiana to Illinois and for Indiana and Ohio. Bush also declared a state of emergency for Missouri including the city of St. Louis on Monday, freeing up federal funding for recovery efforts. More than 300,000 people lost power in the state due to downed power lines, and a utility worker was injured, Missouri state officials said.

While power will be restored over the next days in storm-stricken areas, the California freeze is something that's likely to affect farmers and consumers for months to come, said Dave Kranz, a spokesman for the California Farm Bureau Federation. Kranz said it was still too early to put a dollar estimate on the losses but acknowledged damage was widespread. The freeze could be a costly blow to the industry, said Tim Chelling with the Western Growers Association, representing 2,500 farmers and produce shippers in California and Arizona. A two-night 1998 area freeze resulted in 700 million dollars in crop losses, he said. This is already a five-plus night event with another cold front predicted in 10 days, he said. In the far northeastern state of Maine, temperatures early Wednesday were as low as minus 24 degrees C (minus 11 degrees F) but no major problems were reported. Ski resorts welcomed the icy weather and fresh snow, which allowed them to open runs that have been closed during unseasonably mild temperatures over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. One skier at the Lost Valley resort in the town of Auburn said she was happy the winter weather had finally arrived. I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for the bitter cold and now it's finally here, so I like it. It feels normal again, Shelly Fitts told local television station WCSH from the ski slopes.

Warm spell in Russia wakes up the bears JAN 17,07

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Winters in Russia are always tough, but rarely like this — so warm that bears aren't hibernating and so gray that humans are having trouble
waking up. Much of the European part of Russia has been gripped by an uncharacteristic warm spell this winter, with temperatures generally well above freezing and little if any snow. It's an astonishing contrast to last year, when it was so cold that even Russians inured to frigid winters complained about temperatures that lurked around 30 below zero for days at a time. This year, they'd probably be happy for the cold to come back. The bears in the Leningradsky Zoo in St. Petersburg certainly would be. Two of the zoo's five bears have come out of hibernation already, weeks ahead of time.On Saturday, visitors were surprised when, despite a sign reading The bears are in their den; they are hibernating, a bear named Varya ambled out into view for a snack. Some of the zoo's hedgehogs also are waking up.They can't sleep because of the weather, said zoo assistant Lyuba Astakhova, who added that they nod off when the temperature falls below freezing.

Humans, meanwhile, are complaining about the seemingly endless days of heavy cloud cover that reduces what little light is available to Russians at this time of year, when the sun clears the horizon for only about seven hours a day.

Average temperatures throughout European Russia have mostly been above freezing in December and January, some 11-15 degrees higher than normal, Roman Vilfand of Russia's Hydrometeorological Center said Tuesday.Short-term fluctuations have occurred before, but such weather persisting for a whole month is a previously unseen phenomenon, the RIA-Novosti news agency quoted him as saying. But Vilfand held out some hope, predicting the temperature will fall to 14 in about a week.

Wildfires burn in southern Australia Wed Jan 17, 12:57 AM ET

MELBOURNE, Australia Firefighters battled Wednesday to contain a wildfire that razed a number of homes in southern Australia amid soaring temperatures and warnings
that the worst was yet to come. Two fires in southern Victoria state destroyed a number of homes late Tuesday, including one west of the capital, Melbourne, and three in the state's northeast, where a massive blaze has blackened nearly 67,000 acres over the past two days, according to the Victoria Country Fire Authority.

Authorities earlier reported that eight houses had burned down, but revised the figure after firefighters were able to enter the charred areas and inspect the damage.Meanwhile, firefighters were struggling to contain the northeast blaze, which knocked out a main electricity circuit on Tuesday — plunging some 200,000 homes and businesses into darkness, and affecting hundreds of traffic signals and suburban train services.Several people were caught in elevators when power went out in some buildings and had to be rescued. The power was restored early Wednesday, but Victoria's Premier Steve Bracks urged residents to conserve electricity as temperatures were set to exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit this week. This is the worst bush fire conditions we have ever had in Victoria's history because it is going to go on and it is going to get worse, Bracks told reporters Wednesday. We have never encountered this in Victoria before.Nearly 3,900 square miles of Victorian forest and ranch land have been destroyed since the start of the southern hemisphere summer, when soaring temperatures and gusty winds often combine to spur the sometimes deadly blazes.Officials also evacuated tourists and residents of a resort community in the Snowy Mountains of neighboring New South Wales state on Wednesday, where firefighters and six water-bombing aircraft were struggling to contain a blaze, the Rural Fire Service said.

FACING THE GIANTS MOVIE

Dear Stan,

I am not a movie fan. I haven't been to five movies in the past 10 years. When Facing the Giants came out, I was urged by several of my employees to go see the movie. I went, more to please them than to expect anything on the screen. I am glad I did. Because if I had not, I would have missed one of the best movies I have ever seen!

As I sat through Facing the Giants, I cried and I laughed. I was entertained, and I was inspired. Facing the Giants is what movies can and should be.Let me say it again. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen! If we could see movies like this all the time, I wouldn’t mind paying the more than $7 to see them.I wish everyone could see the movie. I want you to see it. No cursing. No sex. No violence. Just a great heartwarming, wholesome movie that made me feel good when I walked out of the theater.I was so moved by the movie that I wanted to offer it to you. So we approached the distributors of the movie and worked out an arrangement to offer it to you! I hope you will watch it.

If you have children eight years old or above, I hope they will watch it. I hope they will invite their friends to watch it.I could write four more pages praising the movie, but I'm out of space. Don't make the mistake I nearly made by skipping this one. Let me say it again, this is one of the best movies I have seen.Order a copy, invite friends over to your house, pop some corn and break out the soft drinks. Then sit back and get ready to laugh, cry and be inspired! It's that good -- and better.

Click here to order Facing the Giants. Your order will be shipped Jan. 29.

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS WILL BE USED.

ISAIAH 26:21
21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.(WW3,1/2 earths population die).

ISAIAH 13:6-13 KJV
6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:(FROM FRIGHT)
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces
shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous (DANGEROUS) times shall come.

JOEL 2:20,30
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army,(RUSSIA,MUSLIMS) and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.(SIBERIAN DESERT)
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(NUCLEAR BOMB)
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.

EZEKIEL 20:47
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

MALACHI 4:1
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

LUKE 17:34-37
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.(Christians have new bodies, this is the people against Jerusalem during the 7 yr treaty)(Christians bodies are not being eaten by the birds).

MATTHEW 24:37-51
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be
broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

REMEMBER FOLKS THE EARTH GOES ON FOREVER, THIS NUCLEAR WAR ONLY LASTS FOR A SHORT TIME, THEN JESUS THE TRUE PRINCE OF PEACE, RULES WITH A ROD OF IRON FROM JERUSALEM. NO MORE WAR EVER AGAIN, THEN.BUT SIN HAS TO BE ELIMINATED FROM THE EARTH FIRST, THROUGH DISASTERS AND WW3.AND DON'T BLAME GOD FOR ANY OF IT, SATAN IS BEHIND ALL THESE WARS AND DISASTERS, GOD JUST ALLOWS THEM TO HAPPEN SO PEOPLE REPENT FROM SIN.

ISAIAH 14:12-23
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, (SATAN) son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.
19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.
20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.
21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
22 For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD.
23 I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.
24 The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.

Climate change, nuclear threats push world towards Doomsday by Katherine Haddon JAN 17 Clock set at 11:55 and Counting.

LONDON (AFP) The world is inching closer to nuclear Armageddon, top scientists have warned while moving a symbolic Doomsday Clock nearer to midnight and stressing the growing threat of climate change. Renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking was among the Nobel laureates behind the warning, which cited North Korea and Iran as particular reasons increasing the danger of a nuclear winter. It is now five minutes to midnight, Hawking said after the clock was moved forward two minutes from 11:53 pm, where it had stood since 2002.We foresee great peril if governments and scientists don't take action now to render nuclear weapons obsolete and to prevent further climate change, he added. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has kept a Doomsday clock since 1947 as a reminder of the dangers of nuclear proliferation. In simultaneous events in London and Washington on Wednesday the clock's big hand was pushed forward, its sixth move since the end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

We stand at the brink of a Second Nuclear Age.

Not since the first atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has the world faced such perilous choices, said the scientists in a statement.North Korea's recent test of a nuclear weapon, Iran's nuclear ambitions, a renewed emphasis on the military utility of nuclear weapons, the failure to adequately secure nuclear materials, and the continued presence of some 26,000 nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia are symptomatic of a failure to solve the problems posed by the most destructive technology on Earth.First set at seven minutes to midnight a phrase that has become part of pop culture the clock has been moved 17 times in response to global events, varying from two minutes to midnight in 1953 to 17 minutes to midnight in 1991.The most recent shift was in 2002 when it moved two minutes forward because the United States withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and terrorists were known to be seeking nuclear and biological weapons.Founded in 1945 by scientists who had helped develop the atomic bomb and were deeply concerned about the use of nuclear weapons, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists counts 17 Nobel laureates among its boards of directors and sponsors. The London event was held at the Royal Society, Britain's top scientific institution, whose president Martin Rees joined in stressing the threat of climate change as well as nuclear proliferation. Nuclear weapons still pose the most catastrophic and immediate threat to humanity, but climate change and emerging technologies in the life sciences also have the potential to end civilization as we know it, he said.

Pressure mounts on Olmert to resign By AMY TEIBEL, Associated Press Writer JAN 17,07

JERUSALEM Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz came under renewed pressure to resign Wednesday after the Israeli army's chief of staff stepped down in the wake of the flawed Lebanon war.

The sudden departure of Israel's top military official, Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz, delivered another setback to the prime minister, whose popularity has plummeted following last summer's war and a string of political scandals. On Tuesday, Israel's attorney general opened a criminal probe into Olmert's role in a 2005 bank privatization. Halutz stepped down after dozens of internal inquiries into the monthlong Lebanon war found widespread problems in the military's performance. Halutz had previously rejected calls to resign, despite the growing loss of confidence of his political superiors and subordinates in the army. With Halutz on his way out, critics quickly clamored for the heads of the country's other wartime leaders, Olmert and Peretz. The war clearly was mismanaged, and when a war is clearly mismanaged, there is no doubt the chief of staff is responsible, said opposition lawmaker Ran Cohen, a former high-ranking military officer. The responsibility is shared by him, the prime minister and the defense minister, and sooner or later, they, too, will have to leave.

Neither Olmert nor Peretz publicly addressed the demands for their resignation. Olmert made a routine appearance at parliament, sparring with lawmakers over unrelated domestic issues and promising to appoint a new military chief within days. Peretz said he would begin interviewing candidates for the vacant military post immediately.

But pressure on Olmert and Peretz is likely to increase ahead of the release of a wide-ranging government inquiry into the war. The investigative panel, focusing on the performance of military and political leaders, is expected to announce its conclusions in the coming weeks.Halutz's step was unavoidable, but he was not the only one responsible for the failures of the war — the government was too, lawmaker Ophir Pines-Paz, a member of Peretz's Labor Party, told Army Radio. He stopped short of calling on Olmert and Peretz to resign, saying he wanted to wait for the government panel to reach its conclusions. An opinion poll published last week showed Olmert's approval rating at just 14 percent, and his Kadima Party losing if new elections were held.

It is not clear whether the prime minister will be able to survive the resignation of chief of staff Halutz and his own political problems, said Ephraim Inbar, a political scientist at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv. We may see pressure in his own party to replace him. This resignation is definitely the beginning of political turmoil in Israel.Peretz's public standing, meanwhile, is equally dismal. The former union leader won the defense portfolio under a coalition deal with Olmert's Kadima Party, despite his scant military experience. The war's many flaws only cemented sweeping doubts about his fitness to serve as defense minister, and he now faces multiple challenges to his leadership within his own Labor Party, which is scheduled to hold primaries for chairman in May.Both Peretz and Olmert are in a very shaky position, said political scientist Avraham Diskin of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.Israel went into the war with a united front against Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas just hours after they killed three Israeli soldiers and captured two in a July 12 cross-border raid, but that solidarity collapsed after the fighting ended.Critics questioned whether Olmert moved too hastily with a full-scale campaign that ended without achieving its declared aims — recovering the captured soldiers and crushing Hezbollah.More than 1,200 people were killed on both sides, most in Lebanon, according to U.N., Israeli and Lebanese officials. Israel claims it killed 600 guerrillas, but that number has not been substantiated, and Lebanon says most of its casualties were civilians.A total of 159 Israelis were killed, including 39 civilians who died in rocket attacks. Soldiers returning from battle complained of poor planning and shortages of ammunition, food and water.Uri Guralcky, 30, a graduate student and electronics vendor in Jerusalem, said Peretz and Olmert must accept responsibility for the war's failures. They must go together with Halutz, he said. Hezbollah legislator Hussein Haj Hassan told The Associated Press that Halutz's resignation is the result of the defeat of the Israeli enemy in Lebanon.

3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

Palestinian talks may be in trouble JAN 17,07

RAMALLAH, West Bank Negotiations between the rival Palestinian groups Fatah and Hamas hit a new snag Wednesday, people close to the negotiations said, raising the
possibility of a new round of violence. In recent days, negotiators had reported significant progress in the talks, being held in the Syrian capital Damascus, over forming a coalition government. The talks are also aimed at ending recent clashes between Hamas and Fatah. But Fatah's chief negotiator left Damascus on Wednesday, and it was not clear whether a new round of talks would be held, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak to the media.Moussa Abu Marzouk, deputy head of Hamas' politburo, denied that the talks were in trouble.Negotiations were good. There was positive talk about all the subjects that have been raised. All parties are supposed to be positive, Abu Marzouk told AP by telephone in Damascus. We are about to achieve a partnership and this needs constant dialogue, he said.Tensions have been high since Hamas defeated President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement in legislative elections last year. Abbas favors peace talks with Israel, while Hamas remains committed to Israel's destruction, despite an international boycott against the Hamas-led government.Abbas has been pushing Hamas to join him in a more moderate coalition. Those talks broke down in November, leading to a month of political violence that killed 35 people in the Gaza Strip.

Merkel warns of historic mistake on EU charter By Darren Ennis Wed Jan 17, 10:25 AM ET

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Wednesday that failure to revive the European Union's constitution would be a historic mistake that would leave the bloc divided and mired in bureaucracy. Merkel said Germany would aim by the end of its six-month presidency of the European Union in June to offer a plan for resolving the deadlock before European Parliament elections in mid-2009, but offered no hint of how a compromise could look.I know it is a very difficult door I am knocking on, but please don't make this historic mistake. Don't prevent Europe from taking a step in that direction which basically you also want, she told the European Parliament in a plea directed explicitly at eurosceptics in Britain and elsewhere.Asked about Britain's reluctance to revive the stalled treaty, Merkel said it was paradoxical that some of the strongest supporters of EU enlargement opposed institutional reforms without which any further expansion would be impossible.Efforts to overhaul Brussels' unwieldy structures have been in limbo since French and Dutch voters rejected the charter designed to streamline decision-making in 2005.A lumbering bureaucratic, divided Europe will not solve the challenges it faces, be they in foreign and security policy, climate and energy, European research, cutting red tape or in dealing with enlargement and with our neighbors, she said.Appealing for the EU to deepen ties with the United States and Russia, and make its influence felt from the Balkans to the Middle East and Africa, Merkel said it was time the EU had its own foreign minister a key provision of the constitution.Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the executive European Commission, said any final compromise must clear the clouds of doubt which hang over parts of Europe.

SCEPTICAL ON REFERENDUMS

With French President Jacques Chirac and British Prime Minister Tony Blair set to leave office this year, Merkel has emerged as Europe's most influential leader.German officials say what she can achieve depends largely on who is elected president of France on May 6. The French No vote on the EU constitution stemmed partly from fears that cheap labor from new member states in the east would take away jobs in western Europe.Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal said for the first time on Wednesday she would ask the public to vote again in 2009 on a revised constitution, which she said should include an added declaration on workers' rights and public services. With this, I think that the French people will regain confidence and I will be able to bring them along, those who voted yes and those who voted no, she said in Luxembourg. Her conservative opponent, Nicolas Sarkozy, has advocated a mini-treaty stripped down to the key institutional reforms, to be ratified by parliament, not a referendum.Merkel made it clear her skepticism about more referendums, rejecting a call for a pan-European plebiscite. The treaty can only enter into force if all 27 member states ratify it.Behind the scenes, diplomats say Germany is sounding out its partners on what would have to be removed from the text ratified so far by 18 member states to enable the remaining countries to endorse it, if possible without referendums.Aside from difficulties with France and the Netherlands, Berlin faces a struggle to convince governments in the seven other states that have not yet begun ratification procedures.Britain, Poland and the Czech Republic, which promised referendums but never held them after the French and Dutch votes, have cold feet about reviving the treaty. Critics of the charter slammed Merkel's approach as undemocratic in the debate that followed her speech. The EU's political establishment is now going full steam ahead to thrust the constitution upon us, eurosceptical British Conservative Neil Parish said. If the leaders of the EU attempt to airbrush out the wishes of the French and Dutch voters, they risk destroying the very institutions they revere. New parliament chair drops call for God in EU constitution
16.01.2007 - 17:38 CET | By Lucia Kubosova

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The new president of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering has promised to act as a fair and objective president of the whole assembly, indicating that despite his personal convictions, he would no longer press for a reference to God in any revised EU constitution.

Mr Poettering was elected to chair the bloc's legislature by a majority of 450 votes out of 715 MEPs voting in the first round of Tuesday's (16 January) election.Despite three other candidates running for the presidency - with Greens co-chairman Monica Frassoni receiving 145 votes, leftist GUE/NGL president Francis Wurtz 48 votes and Danish eurosceptic Jens-Peter Bonde 46 votes - most group leaders said they believe Mr Poettering will manage to act as a neutral president of all members.Following the vote, the German deputy said one of his key priorities would be to boost a dialogue between cultures, particularly between Christian and Muslim religions. At the same time, he stressed that he wants the parliament to be actively involved in a March declaration to mark the EU's 50th birthday and make sure the document mentions not only the commitment to the bloc's reforms but also its values. However, when asked by journalists if he would press for a reference to God and Christianity to be introduced in a new version of the EU constitution, he said as a president, I can't do it.As chairman of the EPP-ED [centre-right] group in the European Parliament, I favoured the mentioning of Christian values in a constitution but now I have to represent a majority position, he said.German chancellor Angela Merkel last year also mooted the possibility of re-introducing the idea in the re-drafted document, saying after her August visit to the Pope Benedict XVI we need a European identity in the form of a constitutional treaty and I think it should be connected to Christianity and God, as Christianity has forged Europe in a decisive way.Mr Poettering himself wants to meet both the Pope and other religious leaders during his presidency of the EU legislature as part of his initiative to enhance dialogue between cultures.

Exclusive: Jimmy Carter Interceded on Behalf of Nazi SS Guard
18:45 Jan 17, '07 / 27 Tevet 5767 by Ezra HaLevi (INN)

A former U.S. Justice Department official disclosed to Arutz-7 that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s advocacy extended beyond the Palestinians, when he interceded on behalf of a Nazi SS man. Neil Sher, a veteran of the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigation, described a letter he received from Carter in 1987 in an interview with Israel National Radio’s Tovia Singer. The letter, written and signed by Carter, asked that Sher show special consideration for a man proven to have murdered Jews in the Mauthausen death camp in Austria. In 1987, Carter had been out of office for seven years or so, Sher recalled. It was a very active period for my office. We had just barred Kurt Waldheim – he was then president of Austria and former head of the United Nations – from entering the U.S. because of his Nazi past and his involvement in the persecution of civilians during the war. We had just deported an Estonian Nazi Commandant back to the Soviet Union after a bruising battle after which we were attacked by Reagan White House Communications Director Patrick Buchanan. Also around that time, in the spring of 1987, we deported a series of SS guards from concentration camps, whose names nobody would know. One such character we sent back to Austria was a man named Martin Bartesch.Bartesch, who had immigrated to the U.S. and lived in Chicago, admitted to Sher’s office and the court that he had voluntarily joined the Waffen SS and had served in the notorious SS Death’s Head Division at the Mauthausen concentration camp where, at the hands of Bartesch and his cohorts, many thousands of prisoners were gassed, shot, starved and worked to death. He also confessed to having concealed his service at the infamous camp from U.S. immigration officials.

We had an extraordinary piece of evidence against him a book that was kept by the SS and captured by the American armed forces when they liberated Mauthausen, Sher said. We called it the death book.

It was a roster that the Germans required them to keep that identified SS guards as they extended weapons to murder the inmates and prisoners. An entry in the book for October 10, 1943 registered the shooting death of Max Oschorn, a French Jewish prisoner. His murderer was also recorded: SS guard Martin Bartesch. It was a most chilling document, Sher recalled. The same evidence was used by the U.S. military in postwar trials as the basis for execution or long prison sentences for many identified SS guards. We kicked him out and he went back to Austria. In themeantime, his family he had adult kids went on a campaign, also supported by his church, to try to get special treatment. In so doing they attacked the activities of our office and me personally. They claimed we used phony evidence from the Soviet Union which was nonsense. They claimed he was a young man of only 17 or 18 when he joined the Nazi forces, asking for some sympathetic treatment and defense from our office, which they claimed was just after vengeance.

The family approached several members of Congress. The congressmen would, very understandably, forward their claims over to our office and when they learned the facts they would invariably drop the case, Sher recalled.

But there was one politician who accepted the claims without asking for any further information. One day, in the fall of ’87, my secretary walks in and gives me a letter with a Georgia return address reading Jimmy Carter. I assumed it was a prank from some old college buddies, but it wasn’t. It was the original copy of the letter Bartesch’s daughter sent to Carter, after Bartash had already been deported. In the letter, she claimed we were un-American, only after vengeance, and persecuting a man for what he did when he was only 17 and 18 years old. I couldn’t help thinking of my own father who returned home with shrapnel wounds after he joined the U.S. Army as a teenager to fight the Nazis and hit the beaches at Normandy at that same age on D-day.On the upper corner of the letter was a note signed by Jimmy Carter saying that in cases such as this, he wanted special consideration for the family for humanitarian reasons.I didn’t respond to the letter the case was already over and he was out of the country but it always stuck in my craw. A former president who didn’t do what I would expect him to do with a full staff at his disposal to find out the facts before he took up the side of this person. But I wasn’t going to pick a fight with a former president. We had enough on our plate. Now, following Carter’s book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, Sher has decided to go public with the hope that a public made aware of Carter’s support and defense of a Nazi SS man will help illustrate why the arbiter of the Camp David Accords came out with a book defending the Palestinians after the landslide election of the Islamist Hamas terror group. It always bothered me, but I didn’t go public with it until recently, when he wrote this book and let it spill out where his sentiments really lie, Sher said. Here was Jimmy Carter jumping in on behalf of someone who did not deserve in any way, shape or form special consideration. And the things he has now said about the Jewish lobby really exposes where his heart really lies.

THE SECOND HOLOCAUST

Below is an English-language version of an article by Israeli historian Benny Morris, which appeared recently in the German daily DIE WELT (http://www.welt.de/data/2007/01/06/1165992.html). It is an extraordinarily frightening analysis of the nuclear threat facing Israel from Iran, which should be read and pondered by anyone who cares about Israel. For years Benny Morris was the darling of the ISM and anti-Israel activists, a revisionist historian whose articles were used to relentlessly attack ISrael. Today, he has completely reversed himself:

THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION THE SECOND HOLOCAUST
The following is the original text in English provided by Benny Morris.
-------------------------------------
The Second Holocaust Will Not Be Like the First
By Benny Morris

The Nazis, of course, industrialized mass murder. But still, the perpetrators had one-on-one contact with the victims. They may have dehumanized them, over months and years of appalling debasement and in their minds, before the actual killing. But, still, they were in eye- and ear-contact, sometimes in tactile contact, with their victims. The Germans, along with their non-German helpers, had to round up the men, women and children from their houses and drag and beat them through the streets and mow them down in nearby woods or push and pack them on cattle cars and transport them to the camps, where Work makes Free, separate the able-bodied from the completely useless and lure them into shower halls and pour in the gas and then take out, or oversee the extraction of, the bodies and prepare the 'showers' for the next batch. The second Holocaust will be quite different. One bright morning, in five or ten years' time, perhaps during a regional crisis, perhaps out of the blue, a day or a year or five years after Iran's acquisition of the Bomb, the mullahs in Qom will covoke in secret session, under a portrait of the steely-eyed Ayatollah Khomeini, and give President Ahmedinejad, by then in his second or third term, the go ahead. The orders will go out and the Shihab III and IV missiles will take off for Tel Aviv, Beersheba, Haifa, and Jerusalem, and probably some military sites, including Israel's half dozen air and (reported) nuclear missile bases. Some of the Shihabs will be nuclear-tipped, perhaps even with multiple warheads. Others will be dupes, packed merely with biological or chemical agents, or old newspapers, to draw off or confuse Israel's anti-missile batteries and Home Guard units.

With a country the size and shape of Israel (an elongated 8,000 square miles), probably four or five hits will suffice: No more Israel. A million or more Israelis, in the greater Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem areas, will die immediately. Millions will be seriously irradiated. Israel has about seven million inhabitants. No Iranian will see or touch an Israeli. It will be quite impersonal. Some of the dead will inevitably be Arab. 1.3 million of Israel's citizens are Arab and another 3.5 million additional Arabs live in the semi-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa and Haifa have substantial Arab minorities.

And there are large Arab concentrations immediately around Jerusalem (in Ramallah-El Bireh, Bir Zeit, Bethlehem), and outside Haifa. Here, too, many will die, immediately or by and by.It is doubtful whether such a mass killing of fellow Muslims will trouble Ahmedinejad and the mullahs. The Iranians don't especially like Arabs, especially Sunni Arabs, with whom they have intermittently warred for centuries. And they have an especial contempt for the (Sunni) Palestinians, who, after all, though initially outnumbering the Jews by more than 10 to 1, failed during the long conflict to prevent the Jews from establishing their state or taking over all of Palestine. Besides, the Iranian leadership sees the destruction of Israel as a supreme divine command, as a herald of the Second Coming, and the Muslims dispatched collaterally as so many shuhada (martyrs) in the noble cause. Anyway, the Palestinians, many of them dispersed around the globe, will survive as a people, as will the greater Arab Nation, of which they are part. And surely, to be rid of the Jewish state, the Arabs should be willing to make some sacrifices. In the cosmic balance sheet, it will be worth the candle.

A question may nevertheless arise in the Iranian councils: What about Jerusalem? After all, the city contains Islam's third holiest shrines (after Mecca and Medina), Al Aksa Mosque and the Mosque of Omar. But Ali Khamenei, the supreme spiritual leader, and Ahmedinejad most likely would reply much as they would to the wider question regarding the destruction and radioactive pollution of Palestine as a whole: The city, like the land, by God's grace, in twenty or fifty years' time, will recover. And it will be restored to Islam (and the Arabs). And the deeper pollution will have been eradicated. To judge from Ahmedinejad's continuous reference to Palestine and the need to destroy Israel, and his denial of the first Holocaust, he is a man obsessed. He shares this with the mullahs: All were brought up on the teachings of Khomeini, a prolific anti-Semite who often fulminated against 'the Little Satan'. To judge from Ahmedinejad's organisation of the Holocaust cartoons competition and the (current) Holocaust denial conference, the Iranian president's hatreds are deep (and, of course, shameless). He is willing to gamble the future of Iran or even of the whole Muslim Middle East in exchange for Israel's destruction. No doubt he believes that Allah, somehow, will protect Iran from an Israeli nuclear response or an American counterstrike. Allah aside, he may well believe that his missiles will so pulverize the Jewish state, knock out its leadership and its land-based nuclear bases, and demoralize or confuse its nuclear-armed submarine commanders that it will be unable to respond. And, with his deep contempt for the weak-kneed West, he is unlikely to take seriously the threat of American nuclear retaliation.

Or he may well take into account a counter-strike and simply, irrationally (to our way of thinking), be willing to pay the price. As his mentor, Khomeini, put it in a speech in Qom in 1980: 'We do not worship Iran, we worship Allah … I say, let this land [Iran] burn. I say let this land go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant For these worshipers at the cult of death, even the sacrifice of the homeland is acceptable if the outcome is the demise of Israel.Israel's deputy defense minister, Ephraim Sneh, has suggested that Iran doesn't even have to use the Bomb to destroy Israel. Simply, the nuclearization of Iran will so overawe and depress Israelis that they will lose hope and gradually flee emigrate, and potential foreign investors and immigrants will shy away from the mortally threatened Jewish State. These, together, will bring about the State's demise.

But my feeling is that Ahmedinejad and his allies lack the patience for such a drawn-out denouement; they seek Israel's annihilation in the here and now, in the immediate future, in their lifetime. They won't want to leave anything up to the vagaries of history. As with the first, the second Holocaust will have been preceded by decades of preparation of hearts and minds, by Iranian and Arab leaders, Western intellectuals and media outlets. Different messages have gone out to different audiences but all have (objectively) served the same goal, the demonization of Israel. Muslims the world over have been taught: 'The Zionists\the Jews are the embodiment of evil and Israel must be destroyed. And Westeners, more subtly, were instructed: Israel is a racist oppressor state and Israel, in this age of multi-culturalism, is an anachronism and superfluous'. Generations of Muslims and at least a generation of Westerners have been brought up on these catechisms. The build-up to the second Holocaust (which, incidentally, in the end, will probably claim roughly the same number of lives as did the first) has seen an international community fragmented and driven by separate, selfish appetites Russia and China obsessed with Muslim markets; France, with Arab oil and the United States driven by the debacle in Iraq into a deep isolationism. Iran has been left free to pursue its nuclear destiny and Israel and Iran, to face off alone. But an ultimately isolated Israel will prove unequal to the task, like a rabbit caught in the headlights of an onrushing car. Last summer, led by a party hack of a prime minister and a small-time trade unionist as defense minister, and deploying an army trained for quelling incompetent and poorly-armed Palestinians gangs in the occupied territories and overly concerned about both sustaining and inflicting casualties, Israel failed in a 34-day mini-war against a small Iran-backed guerrilla army of Lebanese fundamentalists (albeit highly motivated, well-trained and well-armed). That mini-war thoroughly demoralized the Israeli political and military leaderships.

Since then, the ministers and generals, like their counterparts in the West, have looked on glumly as Hizbullah's patrons have been arming with doomsday weapons. Perversely, the Israeli leaders may even have been happy with Western pressures urging restraint. Most likely they deeply wished to believe Western assurances that somebody, somehow the UN, G-7 would pull the radioactive chestnuts out of the fire. There are even those who fell for the outlandish idea that a regime-change in Teheran, driven by a reputedly secular middle class, would ultimately stymie the mad mullahs.

But even more to the point, the Iranian program presented an infinitely complex challenge for a country with Israel's limited conventional military resources. Taking their cue from the successful Israel Air Force's destruction in 1981 of Iraq's Osiraq nuclear reactor, the Iranians duplicated and dispersed their facilities and buried them deep underground (and the Iranian targets are about twice as far from Israel as was Baghdad). Taking out with conventional weapons the known Iranian facilities would take an American-size air force working round-the-clock for more than a month. At best, Israel's air force, commandos and navy could hope to hit only some of the components of the Iranian project. But, in the end, it would remain substantially intact and the Iranians even more determined (if that were possible) to reach the Bomb as soon as possible. (It would also, without doubt, immediately result in a world-embracing Islamist terrorist campaign against Israel (and possibly its Western allies) and, of course, near-universal vilification. Orchestrated by Ahmedinejad, all would clamor that the Iranian program had been geared to peaceful purposes.). At best, an Israeli conventional strike could delay the Iranians by a year or two.In short order, therefore, the incompetent leadership in Jerusalem would soon confront a doomsday scenario, either after launching their marginally effective conventional offensive or in its stead, of launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the Iranian nuclear program, some of whose components were in or near major cities. Would they have the stomach for this? Would their determination to save Israel extend to pre-emptively killing millions of Iranians and, in effect, destroying Iran?

This dilemma had long ago been accurately defined by a wise general: Israel's nuclear armory was unusable. It could only be used too early or too late. There would never be a right time. Use it too early, meaning before Iran acquired similar weapons, and Israel would be cast in the role of international pariah, a target of universal Muslim assault, without a friend in the world; too late would mean using its nuclear weapons after the Iranians had struck. What purpose would that serve? So Israel's leaders will grit their teeth and hope that somehow things will turn out for the best.

Perhaps, after acquiring the Bomb, the Iranians will behave rationally? But the Iranians are driven by a higher logic. And they will launch their rockets. And, as with the first Holocaust, the international community will do nothing. It will all be over, for Israel, in a few minutes not like in the 1940s, when the world had five long years in which to wring its hands and do nothing. After the Shihabs fall, the world will send rescue ships and medical aid for the lightly charred. It will not nuke Iran. For what purpose and at what cost? An American nuclear response would lastingly alienate the whole of the Muslim world, deepening and universalizing the ongoing clash of civilizations. And, of course, it would not bring Israel back. (Would hanging a serial muderer bring back his victims?) So what would be the point?
Still, the second Holocaust will be different in the sense that Ahmedinejad will not actually see and touch those he so wishes dead (and, one may speculate, this might
cause him disappointment as, in his years of service in Iranian death squads in Europe, he may have acquired a taste for actual blood).

And, indeed, there will be no scenes like the following, quoted in Daniel Mendelsohn's recent The Lost, A Search for Six of Six Million,in which is described the second Nazi Aktion in Bolechow, Poland, in September 1942:A terrible episode happened with Mrs. Grynberg. The Ukrainians and Germans, who had broken into her house, found her giving birth. The weeping and entreaties of bystanders didn't help and she was taken from her home in a nightshirt and dragged into the square in front of the town hall. There … she was dragged onto a dumpster in the yard of the town hall with a crowd of Ukraininans present, who cracked jokes and jeered and watched the pain of childbirth and she gave birth to a child. The child was immediately torn from her arms along with its umbilical cord and thrown It was trampled by the crowd and she was stood on her feet as blood poured out of her with bleeding bits hanging and she stood that way for a few hours by the wall of the town hall, afterwards she went with all the others to the train station where they loaded her into a carriage in a train to Belzec [extermination camp].In the next Holocaust there will be no such heart-rending scenes, of perpetrators and victims mired in blood (though, to judge from pictures of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the physical effects of nuclear explosions can be fairly unpleasant). But it will be a Holocaust nonetheless.

Earthquake strikes off of Taiwan coast Mon Jan 16, 11:00 PM ET

TAIPEI, Taiwan - An earthquake struck off of Taiwan's east coast Tuesday, the Central Weather Bureau said. No damage or injuries were reported, and no tsunami warning was issued. The 5.4-magnitude quake was centered about 100 miles southeast of the capital of Taipei, the weather bureau said. The island is frequently hit by quakes that do little damage. But a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 2,300 people. Last month a 6.7 offshore temblor severed two undersea cables and disrupted telephone and Internet service to millions of users throughout Asia.No communications problems were reported after Tuesday's quake.

Four dead, thousands homeless in Burundi floods JAN 16,07

BUJUMBURA (AFP) - Heavy rains pounding Burundi's capital and outlying areas have killed at least four people and left about 23,000 homeless since the downpours began last month, officials said. They said the situation was catastrophic after the floods destroyed farmlands, sparking fears of food shortages and disease outbreaks in the tiny central African nation emerging from more than a decade of civil strife.Zenon Ndaruvukanye, governor of Bujumbura Rural province, said thousands of houses have been destroyed in Mutimbuzi and Gatumba municipalities north of the capital Bujumbura as well as in Kabezi in the south.A house collapsed and killed two students on Friday. Two children were killed in similar circumstances while one man was reported missing after he was swept away by river waters, Ndaruvukanye told AFP.The situation is catastrophic in in several areas around the capital. He added that more than 70 percent of farmlands have been destroyed by the floods sparked by the heavy rains since the onset of the wet season a month ago.The rains have destroyed some 1,300 houses (in the capital), but the risk of disease outbreak is more worrying, said Celestin Sebutama, the mayor of Bujumbura, adding that between 4,000 and 5,000 people have been displaced in the capital alone.

42 killed as ice storms, snow, floods hit US 1 hour JAN 16,07

CHICAGO (AFP) - A massive winter storm packing snow, sleet and ice has killed 42 people across the United States, and left half a million people without electricity, the National Weather Service said. This is a big one, affecting all the way from New Mexico to Maine said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the weather service said. The worst hit areas were Oklahoma, where freezing rain left behind one to three inches (7.6 cm) of ice, and Missouri, hard hit by sleet, he said. With the ice, the trees come down on the power lines and in Oklahoma its going to take the rest of the week to get all that restored, he said.

The lines are completely down. Its not like its a transformer here and there its the whole grid. Its a mess. The storm, which first struck Friday, was caused by an enormous cold front that forced temperatures down by as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and brought wave after wave of freezing rain and sleet as it slowly moved eastward. It weakened somewhat Tuesday, sparing the major population centers of the east coast like New York, Boston and Philadelphia from the worst of the ice and sleet. There are a lot of happy campers out there because they finally have some snow at the ski resorts, Feltgen said. The National Weather Service issued flood warnings and advisories in several states, from Louisiana to Ohio and Illinois. An ice storm warning was posted for parts of the northeastern states of New Hampshire and Maine. The Weather Service also issued an ice storm warning early Tuesday that warned of frozen precipitation and ice accumulation across southeast Texas including the Houston and Laredo metropolitan areas through Wednesday. The storm in central states was moving eastward and has already caused ice storms in western parts of New York state, forecasters said.Workers with the Federal Emergency Management Agency distributed generators and bottled water to communities in the state of Oklahoma hit by the ice storm, after President George W. Bush declared an emergency in the state on Sunday.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported more than 300 accidents on the road in which 14 people were killed, including seven in a minivan crash Sunday. Local reports said the men in the van were all migrant workers from Mexico. Some 103,000 people were also without power, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management reported. Officials in the state of Missouri reported that bad weather had claimed eight lives, with traffic accidents caused by slick conditions killing seven and one dying from carbon monoxide poisoning, a common cause of death when people without electricity use fuel-burning stoves to heat their homes.More than 300,000 people lost power in the state due to downed power lines, and a line worker was injured when he fell from a utility pole, state officials said.In Kansas, five people were reported killed in weather-related road accidents and one person was poisoned by carbon monoxide exposure, state officials told the Kansas City Star newspaper. One person also died in a weather-related traffic accident in New York state, according to WGY radio.

In Texas, Governor Rick Perry called out the National Guard after more than 15 centimeters (six inches) of rain caused flash flooding and dramatic high-water rescues in areas of central Texas. Local media reported two killed in separate weekend accidents on icy roads in western Texas. In California, where mild temperatures are the norm, farmers and state officials in the agricultural Central
Valley said that up to 70 percent of the oranges still on trees had been destroyed by the freeze. Icicles hung from tangerine trees in a Central Valley orchard near Fresno, a rare sight in the state. In central Los Angeles, the thermometer dropped to 2.0 degrees Celsius (36 Fahrenheit) early Monday, a record-setting temperature not felt in the city in 75 years. California's top state agricultural official, A.G. Kawamura, was in southern Ventura County inspecting freeze damage on citrus crops on Monday. Kawamura's office estimates that damage from the freeze will surpass that from a three-day freeze in December 1998, when the state citrus industry lost 85 percent of its crop, valued at 700 million dollars. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a state of emergency on Friday due to the low temperatures, which among other measures opened heating centers for people and their pets to take refuge. Some 51,000 homes and businesses were left without power in upstate New York after a heavy layer of ice covered the area early Monday, National Grid spokesman Alberto Bianchetti said. The company, which provides power to around 1.5 million customers in the northern part of the state, expected to start restoring services later in the day, he said. The cold weather prevented Governor Eliot Spitzer from attending a ceremony in the northern part of New York state to honor Martin Luther King on Monday and dozens of schools there stayed closed Tuesday because of the cold snap. The situation was expected to deteriorate, with more snow forecast later Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Malaysian PM says huge task to repair flood damage Tue Jan 16, 9:56 AM ET

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia faces a huge task to repair the damage from disastrous floods, the prime minister said, as boats and helicopters ferried supplies to nearly 100,000 people displaced by the crisis.

However, with the rains beginning to ease, evacuees started returning to their homes, and the number of people sheltering in relief centres fell to 94,152, down from a peak of some 110,000 on Monday, officials said.Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi travelled by helicopter and boat to reach the worst-hit district of Kota Tinggi in southern Johor state, which is almost completely submerged.Abdullah said federal and state authorities must join hands to help evacuees return to their homes, and ensure that shops and businesses were reopened.

It's going to be a momentous task, he was quoted as saying by the state Bernama news agency. What I saw during my tour ... is the urgent need for efforts to restore the evacuees' living conditions. The number of evacuees has eased in central Pahang state, also affected by rains, to 3,520, while eastern Sabah state on Borneo island has 2,696 displaced, officials said.Police at Johor's flood operations centre said aid supplies were reaching all affected areas, while reports said boats, trucks and helicopters were taking food, blankets, clothing and other essential supplies to victims. The escalation in the relief effort comes after criticism that evacuation centres were overwhelmed, and that some were forced to ration food supplies.Health officials are also on the lookout for waterborne and other contagious diseases after two people in Johor died of leptospirosis, which is spread by animal urine.

The meteorology department Tuesday eased back its rain warning for Johor and Pahang from its highest red stage alert, instead forecasting light to moderate rains until Saturday. However, heavy rains were expected to continue in parts of Sabah until Saturday, it said.Eighteen people have died so far in the floods, including 15 in Johor in the first wave of the crisis, which hit in December. Government estimates have estimated the damage at more than 100 million ringgit (28.53 million dollars).

Heavy rain, floods kill 23 in Philippines Mon Jan 15, 4:09 PM ET

MANILA (AFP) - Floods and landslides in the central and southern Philippines in the past two weeks have killed 23 people and displaced thousands, the Office of Civil Defense said.

Seventeen people were killed in Samar and Southern Leyte provinces on Visayas islands from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains, the office said.Six deaths were recorded in Agusan province on the main southern island of Mindanao.Road networks in Leyte and Davao del Sur provinces remain barely passable to light vehicles, while floods have washed out bridges and sealed highways in Surigao province, it said.Rescuers were meanwhile clearing roads elsewhere on Mindanao due to landslides, it said. Some 24,508 people have been forced to flee their homes to 18 evacuation centers in the region, while at least three towns on Mindanao have been declared a state of calamity.Four typhoons that hit the Philippines in the last quarter of 2006 left over 2,000 people dead and missing, including hundreds buried by volcanic mudslides unleashed when typhoon Durian hit the eastern region of Bicol on November 30.

Firefighters brace for tough days
Dan Oakes - January 16, 2007

Firefighters are working frantically to protect small towns across Victoria as the latest shift in the weather increases the risk posed by massive bushfires. Authorities hope the backburning done in the past few days in Gippsland and the state's north will save the communities from the kind of property loss seen in northern Gippsland last week.Today is a total fire ban day, and the EPA has warned of poor air quality due to smoke. High temperatures, strong winds and lightning strikes are expected to severely test the 2700 firefighters already battling blazes that have burned out more than 1 million hectares of the state.Last night, small communities south-east of Benalla were at risk from the 17,000-hectare Tatong fire. Residents of Toombullup, Archerton, Tolmie, Burders Lane and Whitlands were told to prepare for ember attacks and radiant heat. It's going to be interesting in the next couple of days because the wind will turn around and force the fire back towards Tatong itself, Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Stuart Ord said yesterday.

That country up there is a mixture of pasture, forests, spud paddocks, so it will be a difficult one to round up, I'd imagine.Mr Ord said the areas either side of the Great Alpine Road where farmland around the community of Tambo Crossing was razed last week, and further north around Swifts Creek were also of concern. There's still some live fire edge in the Brookville area, south-west of Swifts Creek. We've got resources in there trying to get as close to and round those up as quickly as possible before the high temperatures and stronger winds arrive today, Mr Ord said.Likewise, east of Tambo Crossing, there are some spotfires near a place called Mount Elizabeth. We've made a decision to get resources right on the edge of those spot fires rather than backing off to some containment lines further afield. He said bulldozers and aircraft were being used to try to bring those fires under control before high winds hit.

Another fire is burning in rugged terrain at Hermit Mountain, 40 kilometres south-east of Corryong, in the state's far north-east. It is much smaller than the others, but the area's inaccessibility has firefighters worried. We've got dozers gradually working their way towards the fire, but they still haven't reached it, Mr Ord said. There's heavy aerial attack at the moment, with water. It's about 300 hectares, so in terms of the other fires it's reasonably small, but it's got huge potential. After flames came within metres of Mount Buller village last week and were repelled with snow guns, the danger has passed somewhat.Elsewhere in Gippsland, around Heyfield, Seaton and Toongabbie, firefighters were engaged in blacking out around the fire: flames within 40 metres of the fire edge are doused to stop the winds from rekindling the blaze.Further reinforcements from overseas are expected on Monday, when almost 150 firefighters from the National Interagency Fire Centre at Boise, in the US state of Idaho, will arrive to relieve exhausted crews and provide expertise in battling blazes in rugged terrain. The 143member American team will join 53 Canadian firefighters and 68 New Zealanders already here.

Over 17,000 people died in fires across Russia in 2006 15/ 01/ 2007

MOSCOW, January 15 (RIA Novosti) - According to official data, 17,065 people, including 698 children, died in 218,570 fires across Russia in 2006, a source in the Ministry of Emergency Situations said Monday. The number of fires was down 4%, and the number of fatalities caused by fires fell 6.8% against 2005, but the number of injured increased 1.3%, the source said, adding that 13,379 people were injured in fires during 2006.

Firefighters and rescuers saved over 96,000 people from fires last year, he said, adding that most of the fires were registered in homes, accounting for 72% of the total. The source said financial damage caused by fires amounted to 7.9 billion rubles ($297.22 million at the current exchange rate), 16.4% higher than in 2005. The most tragic fire in 2006 occurred in early December at a drug treatment hospital in southern Moscow. Forty-five people, including 43 patients and two members of staff, died as a result of inhaling fumes before a fire brigade arrived at the scene. The 200-plus survivors were evacuated safely, and ten of them were hospitalized.

Huge threat posed by Auckland volcanoes
NZPA | Friday, 12 January 2007

Geologists say new research shows there have been seven eruptions in the Auckland volcano field which each buried the region where the city lies under more than 10cm of ash. That amount of ash would cause chaos in Auckland, said GNS Science volcanologist Graham Leonard. From a hazard point of view, that is pretty significant. The research which casts new light on volcanic threats to New Zealand's biggest city and a third of the nation's population springs from the Auckland Maar Volcano Drilling Programme. A partnership between Auckland University and GNS Science it was started to collect drill cores providing a record of longterm climatic changes, but the drill cores have also thrown new light on past eruptions.

The barge-mounted drill rig anchored in about 2 metres of water is expected to finish its work today. Some of the cores in the Orakei Basin have shown the Orakei volcano is probably three times as old as previously thought, and by drilling 81m into the sediment beneath the basin the scientists have identified ash layers from 90 eruptions in about the past 90,000 years. Until now, scientists believed the Orakei volcano was about 20,000 years old.

One ash layer more than 10cm thick was from the Lake Rotoiti area in the Bay of Plenty, and thinner layers came from eruptions at Mayor Island, Taupo, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Taranaki. The scientists have identified at least 50 different ash layers from Auckland volcanoes such as Little Rangitoto, Mt Hobson, The Domain, Mt St John, and One Tree Hill. Each of the 50 volcanic cones scattered around Auckland has been fed by a plume of molten basalt which can force its way to the surface quite quickly, at speeds of about 5kph, according to Auckland University research published on the GNS website. There appears to be a trend towards an increase in the average size of eruptions, which have been of two main types. Phreatomagmatic eruptions violent explosions of steam, gas, lava and rock triggered when water and magma mix. These typically create a maar (CRRCT) volcano with a crater up to 1km, such as the Orakei Basin, and make up 72 per cent of the Auckland volcanoes. The other main type of volcano is the scoria cones such as One Tree Hill.

Experts have predicted that in future explosive eruptions in Auckland volcanic ash falling from the air may slash visibility or even cause complete darkness, damage electrical equipment, immobilise motor vehicles, and short-circuit communication systems and electricity supplies. Even small amounts can damage vegetation and affect the breathing of people and animals, while attempts to wash it away will clog drainage systems. Over 70 per cent of the Auckland volcanoes have also had fire-fountains of incandescent magma, and 30 of the volcanoes have had lava flows. Auckland has a big volcanic eruption every 5000 years on average and the last one was Rangitoto, about 600 years ago. According to the university's head of geology Ian Smith, monitoring will give a warning of days to weeks before the next eruption. The 360sqkm covered by the Auckland volcanic field stretches from Rangitoto Island in the north to Manurewa in the south.

New Bird Flu Outbreaks Raise Alarm in Asia
By Claudia Blume Hong Kong - 15 January 2007 (VOA)

Rising numbers of human bird flu deaths in Indonesia and avian flu outbreaks among poultry in several Asian countries have put the region on alert. The World Health Organization says Asia, Africa, even Europe, need to be prepared for the worse. Claudia Blume reports from VOA's Asia News Center in Hong Kong. Vietnamese authorities reported on Monday that bird flu has spread to a seventh province in the country's south. Avian flu outbreaks have led to the killing of tens of thousands of birds in Vietnam's Mekong delta in the past month. Thai livestock officials say they have just culled ducks in a northern province, the first flu outbreak in poultry in six months. In Japan, agricultural authorities began culling thousands of chickens at a southern poultry farm on Sunday after tests found they were infected with bird flu. In Hong Kong, a dead bird suspected of having the H5N1 strain of avian influenza was found last Saturday, the second in two weeks.Bird flu has also claimed human lives. Four people died of avian influenza in Indonesia last week. The son and husband of one the victims are being treated for symptoms of bird flu. Officials say, however, that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission.Peter Cordingley, spokesman for the World Health Organization's regional office in Manila, says the recent outbreaks prove Asia needs to remain vigilant.

We are prepared to see basically a repeat of last year and we wouldn't be surprised at all to see the other thing last year which is this virus getting on the move, he explained. Last year it moved out of Asia and moved into the Middle East and Europe and parts of Africa. We have seen human cases in Egypt already, outbreaks in poultry in northern Niger already so we suspect that it would be foolish to vote against this virus not doing exactly the same it did last year.Cordingley urges continued education about the dangers of living in close proximity to infected poultry, particularly in Indonesia, where more than 60 people have already died of avian influenza. Many Asian countries are now better prepared than they were a year ago however. Denis Hoffman is a bird flu expert at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization in Bangkok. He says surveillance and containment mechanisms have improved tremendously. And even the countries that haven't had the disease yet, they have had assistance in preparing their contingency plans, looking at their imports and exports to make sure that they don't get the disease coming in through the trade of poultry products, which is probably one of the major reasons for its spread, he said.Bird flu featured prominently at the meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations in Manila. Leaders endorsed a bird flu-prevention road map aimed at sharing best practices in the region.

Infectious diseases plague N. Korean city: source JAN 15,07

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) Four infectious diseases have stricken a North Korean city on the east coast, affecting up to 4,000 people, a source claimed Monday. Chongjin is overrun by scarlet fever, typhoid, typhus and paratyphoid. About 3,000 to 4,000 are suffering from the diseases, the source said, asking to remain anonymous. The source reported the infected people are mostly under 40 years of age. North Korean health authorities have halted railway operations to prevent the spread of disease and have imposed travel bans. When scarlet fever erupted late last year, North Korean authorities also imposed travel bans across the country, the source added.Good Neighbors International, a South Korean civic organization which provides aid to North Korea, confirmed that the rapid spread of disease in the North has resulted in school closings and travel bans.Another source also claimed that Chongjin has only one hospital equipped with 150 beds in each district, but about 600-700 patients are seeking treatment in one district.

Last Thursday, South Korea's unification minister said the government will not provide any medical aid to North Korea to help stem the spread of scarlet fever in the communist country. But a South Korean civic group already shipped 36 types of medicine such as penicillin and antibiotics, worth approximately US$5 million, to the impoverished North.Last month, the Join Together Society, a humanitarian aid group in Seoul, shipped a total of 400,000 injectable doses of penicillin to the North. Scarlet fever is not an intrinsically serious communicable disease, but if not treated properly it can become as serious as cholera or typhoid. (END)

7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.

3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

JOEL 2:3,20,30-31
3 A fire(NUCLEAR BOMB) devoureth before them;(RUSSIA-ARABS) and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

JOEL 3:2

Russian Admiral Says U.S. Navy Prepares Missile Strike on Iran
15.01.2007 11:45 MSK (GMT +3), MosNews

U.S. Navy nuclear submarines maintaining vigil off the coast of Iran indicate that the Pentagon’s military plans include not only control over navigation in the Persian Gulf but also strikes against Iranian targets, a former commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Eduard Baltin has told the Interfax news agency. The presence of U.S. nuclear submarines in the Persian Gulf region means that the Pentagon has not abandoned plans for surprise strikes against nuclear targets in Iran. With this aim a group of multi-purpose submarines ready to accomplish the task is located in the area, Admiral Baltin said.He made the comments after reports that a U.S. submarine collided with a Japanese tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.American patience is not unlimited, he said.

The submarine commanders go up to the periscope depth and forget about navigation rules and safety measures, the admiral said. Currently there is a group of up to four submarines in the Persian Gulf area, he said. So far they only control navigation in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and in the Arabian Sea, he said. They might receive different orders in future: to block off the Gulf of Oman, that is the Iranian coast, and, if need be, launch missile strikes against ground targets in Iran, he said.

Scientists prepare to move Doomsday Clock forward
Fri Jan 12, 2007 3:21pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) The keepers of the Doomsday Clock plan to move its hands forward next Wednesday to reflect what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the world. The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight, with midnight marking global catastrophe. The group did not say in which direction the hands would move. But in a news release previewing an event next Wednesday, they said the change was based on worsening nuclear, climate threats to the world. The major new step reflects growing concerns about a Second Nuclear Age marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing launch-ready status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks, the release reads. The clock was last pushed forward by two minutes to seven minutes to midnight in 2002 amid concerns about the proliferation of nuclear, biological and
other weapons and the threat of terrorism. When it was created by the magazine's staff in 1947, it was initially set at seven minutes to midnight and has moved 17 times since then.It was as close as two minutes to midnight in 1953 following U.S. and Soviet hydrogen bomb tests, and as far away as 17 minutes to midnight in 1991 after the superpowers reached agreement on a nuclear arms reductions.

Invisible RFID Ink Safe For Cattle And People, Company Says
The process developed by Somark involves a geometric array of micro-needles and an ink capsule, which is used to tattoo an animal. The ink can be detected from 4 feet away. By K.C. Jones - InformationWeek - Jan 10, 2007 04:49 PM

A startup company developing chipless RFID ink has tested its product on cattle and laboratory rats.

Somark Innovations announced this week that it successfully tested biocompatible RFID ink, which can be read through animal hairs. The passive RFID technology could be used to identify and track cows to reduce financial losses from Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (mad cow disease) scares. Somark, which formed in 2005, is located at the Center for Emerging Technologies in St. Louis. The company is raising Series A equity financing and plans to license the technology to secondary markets, which could include laboratory animals, dogs, cats, prime cuts of meat, and military personnel. Chief scientist Ramos Mays said the tests provide a true proof-of-principle and mitigate most of the technological risks in terms of the product's performance. This proves the ability to create a synthetic biometric or fake fingerprint with biocompatible, chipless RFID ink and read it through hair, he said.

Co-founder Mark Pydynowski said during an interview Wednesday that the ink doesn't contain any metals and can be either invisible or colored. He declined to say what is in the ink, but said he's certain that it is 100% biocompatible and chemically inert. He also said it is safe for people and animals. The process developed by Somark involves a geometric array of micro-needles and a reusable applicator with a one-time-use ink capsule.

Pydynowski said it takes five to 10 seconds to stamp or tattoo an animal, and there is no need to remove the fur. The ink remains in the dermal layer, and a reader can detect it from 4 feet away. Conceptually, you can think of it in the same way that visible light is reflected by mirrors, he said, adding that the actual process is slightly different and proprietary.

The amount of information contained in the ink depends on the surface area available, he said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture calls for a 15-digit number to track cattle. The first three digits are 840 for the U.S. country code. The remaining digits are unique identifiers. The numbers would link to a database containing more information. It can say where it has been, who it has talked to,
who it has eaten with, and who else it has been in contact with, Pydynowski said. Ranchers and others in the agricultural industry can choose a covert stamping system, which would make it impossible for cattle thieves to tell which animals have been marked and easy for those checking for stolen cattle to determine a cow's source. Pydynowski said the technology is an improvement over ear tags, which can be detached from cows and other products. The technology could verify that cuts of meat originated in a hormone-free environment, Pydynowski said, adding that consumers would destroy the system by breaking down the ink when chewing the meat. In other words, Big Brother wouldn't know whether someone ate a Big Mac or a filet mignon, according to Pydynowski's explanation. However, the government and agricultural producers and retailers could track e-coli outbreaks in spinach, he said. The ink also could be used to track and rescue soldiers, Pydynowski said. It could help identify friends or foes, prevent friendly fire, and help save soldiers' lives, he said. It's a very scary proposition when you're dealing with humans, but with military personnel, we're talking about saving soldiers' lives and it may be something worthwhile.

THERE WILL BE A ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT HEADED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION.

DANIEL 7:23-25
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

DANIEL 12:4,1
4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

REVELATION 13:1-3,7,8,12,16-18
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

REVELATION 17:3,7,9-10,12,18
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

U.S., Mexico, Canada harmonizing policies
North American deep cooperation on many fronts already under way, reveals new official publication January 15, 2007 - 1:00 a.m. Eastern - 2007 WorldNetDaily.com

WASHINGTON The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, which some have criticized as a framework for moving toward regional government between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, has laid out plans for increased regulatory cooperation between the three nations in new, full-color, trilingual publications obtained by WND.Copies of the 2005 Report to Leaders and the 2006 Report to Leaders were sent to WND by several congressional offices that are beginning to take a serious interest in SPP working group activities and decision-making. The copyright page of the 2005 report indicates that the report was co-published by the governments of the United States and Mexico, as well as copyrighted in Canada. The 2005 and 2006 reports continue to discuss numerous memoranda of understanding and other agreements that the trilateral working groups are formulating on their own, without direct congressional oversight or any reference to being published in the Federal Register. Yet, the vast majority of the agreements reached under SPP have never been published.

The reports discuss the SPP's trilateral modification of administrative rules and regulation under the rubric of integrating and harmonizing into a North American structure what previously were administrative rules and regulations of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. For instance, under a heading that includes the U.N. sustainability language, the energy working group announces in the 2005 report that their goal is, Creating a sustainable energy economy for North America. Justifying the working group's activity as producing appropriate coordination between regulators, the report concludes: All agree that the regulatory efforts of the National Energy Board (NEB), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Comisión Reguladora de Energía (CRE) will benefit from increased communication and cooperation concerning the timing and other procedural aspects of related matters that may be pending between the three agencies. The report then calls for the announcement of a trilateral regulators' group that will meet three times a year (every four months) to discuss issues affecting cross-border energy projects. The 2006 report notes that this key milestone was completed.

Some critics of the SPP see it leading toward a breakdown of national sovereignty and representative government, fearing it will lead inexorably toward a European Union-style regionalization for North America. Now that we see books being published by SPP, how can anyone deny that the Bush administration is involved in a process of North American deep integration? asks Jerome R. Corsi, author and WND columnist who is writing a book on the movement. SPP is creating North American regulations that replace and supersede U.S. regulations in a wide range of policy areas. Just the three-language format of the full color production is enough to let readers know that the Bush administration considers our appropriate regulatory scope to be North American in nature. We no longer have a U.S. energy policy, for instance, we have a North American energy policy. Corsi, known as one of the chief critics of plans for a North American Union, said: Since 2001 and the formation of the Prosperity Partnership with Mexico, trilateral working group activity in North America has been gaining momentum. After the declaration of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America in Waco, Texas, on March 23, 2005, we have a full-fledged shadow bureaucracy that is setting up the regulatory structure for what could easily evolve into a full regional government.

The North American Energy Working Group has now set up a webpage on the U.S. Department of Energy website. A January 2006 report entitled North America The Energy Picture II documents that the NAEWG first met June 27-28, 2001, in Washington. Since then, there have been eight more NAEWG full working group meetings convened in various locations of the three countries, with many more meetings of the various expert groups convened under the NAEWG agenda. According to North America The Energy Picture II, NAEWG activities can be traced back to the Hemispheric Energy Ministers Meeting in Mexico, on March 8, 2001, when the heads of Natural Resources Canada, the Mexican Secretariat of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Energy formally committed to work together to facilitate a stronger North American energy sector. Despite the advanced stage of SPP working group activity, Corsi said, few U.S. congressmen or senators have any idea that SPP working groups are producing a North American regulatory structure. I still find myself going into the offices of congressmen and senators on Capitol Hill and having to work with staff to show them SPP websites they never have seen before, even though some of their bosses sit on committees that are supposed to be responsible for oversight of the SPP activities I am showing them for the first time.

SPP is one of the best kept secrets in Washington, Corsi told WND, even though SPP has a website, there are SPP websites embedded in the websites of many government agencies, and now SPP is publishing full-color books in three languages.

Yet, nobody in Washington has bothered to hold a single SPP hearing. Meanwhile, we are being led into regional government by bureaucrats whose mission is to create North American policies, not to worry about the sovereignty of the United States. The SPP website contains somewhat different versions of the 2005 prosperity agenda and security agenda, as well as the 2006 prosperity agenda and the security agenda. This is no conspiracy, Corsi continued. Conspiracies are conducted in secret. Now, SPP even publishes books documenting the North American deep integration agenda the SPP working groups are advancing day-by-day. The 2006 published Report to Leaders documents the following working group activity in the Prosperity Agenda:
Manufactured Goods and Sectoral and Regional Competitiveness.Movement of Goods.E-Commerce and ICT.Financial Services ,Transportation.Energy.Environment.Food and Agriculture,Health. The 2006 Report to Leaders identifies the following Security Agenda initiatives, key milestones, and status of completion in the following areas: 1. Secure North America from External Threats .Traveler Security.Cargo Security.Bioprotection.2. Prevent and Respond to Threats within North America .Aviation Security.Maritime Security.Law EnforcementCooperation.Intelligence Cooperation.Protection, Prevention and Response.3. Further Streamline the Secure Movement of Low-Risk Traffic Across Our Shared Borders .Border Facilitation.Science and Technology Cooperation.SPP is organized within the Department of Commerce.

Those who want to receive copies of the printed 2005 and 2006 reports, may contact Geri Word, the administrator within the Department of Commerce who appears most responsible for organizing SPP activity.

Dutch MEPs Want Limited European Constitution NIS NEWS BULLETIN

BRUSSELS, 16/01/07 The Dutch political parties are divided on the question of how to proceed further with the European Constitution. Despite what some think, the idea of a constitution is anything but dead. The Christian democrats (CDA), Labour (PvdA) and small Christian party ChristenUnie are the parties currently trying to form a government.

MEPs of all three urge the introduction of a limited treaty. The Netherlands and France rejected the Constitution, but meanwhile, 18 EU countries have voted for it. State Secretaries of EU countries will start discussing the future of the text next Friday in Madrid. Talks in Luxembourg will follow, and in March, a brain-storming session by government leaders in Berlin.Ria Oomen, an experienced CDA MEP, in any case wants to discuss the constitution further. My call to the new coalition is not to appoint any minister that says the constitution is dead. This is a remarkable call, as CDA Foreign Minister Ben Bot repeatedly said so.

Bot did say in November he expects there will be a new treaty in around two years. This will not be a new European Constitution, according to the minister, but a new treaty under which more veto rights are scrapped to make EU administration easier.PvdA wants new negotiations. The subject is currently a bit too broad. On top of this, the text could be simpler, in the view of Max van den Berg, PvdA leader in the European Parliament. The PvdA was a supporter of the rejected Constitution, as was CDA.ChristenUnie, which was against the Constitution, now wants a limited treaty about certain changes to allow the EU to function with 27 countries and admit Croatia in a few years, said MEP Hans Blokland. He does not see a place for ideas such as an EU president. The Socialist Party (SP), also a Constitution opponent, considers the Netherlands must not allow itself to be intimidated by countries that have not held any referendum, says MEP Erik Meijer. In these countries, the population also had strong objections. The SP wants to move to fundamental changes in the subject, and especially with less liberalisation and defence.Like ChristenUnie, VVD wants to shorten the existing text. VVD MEP Jules Maaten wants only the part on EU institutions and procedures to be introduced for now. The chapter on civil rights can come later, he considers.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.

DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships;
and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.

January 16, 2007 Israel denies secret deal' with Syria
David Byers and agencies

Israel has denied reports that understandings have been reached with Syria after two years of secret peace talks.

Haaretz, an Israeli daily newspaper, claimed that Israeli and Syrian officials met secretly in Europe several times between September 2004 and July 2006, reaching a framework for a deal that would include an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, which it captured in the 1967 war.The newspaper reported that Israel was represented in the talks by Alon Liel, a former top diplomat, and that Ariel Sharon, the former prime minister, had been briefed on the meetings as well as Ehud Olmert, his successor. The Syrian representative in the talks was Ibrahim Suleiman, an American citizen, the newspaper reported. But reacting to the story this morning, Israel denied any secret talks had been authorised by the country's leadership.Dov Weisglass, Mr Sharon's former chief of staff, said: It is very possible that a group of people met, negotiated and formulated a document. But, during Sharon's term as prime minister, did the Prime Minister's Office have an officially approved agreement on this or any other similar procedure? The answer is no.

Silvan Shalom, the former foreign minister, said that the first he had heard of any talks was when he read this morning's Haaretz, adding that the last Israeli-Syrian contact he was aware of had been in 2003. Meanwhile, David Baker, an official in Mr Olmert's office, echoed his denial, saying: The Israeli Government is unaware of any such meetings. In its reports, Haaretz claims the talks focused on Israel agreeing to withdraw from the Golan Heights and returning to its pre-1967 borders. Reportedly, Syria demanded that the move be made within five years, though Israel wanted the plan to be gradually implemented over 15 years. Syria would be willing to discontinue support for Hezbollah and Hamas and cut ties with Iran, the reports added, while Israel would remain in control of the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee. Any peace agreement between Israel and Syria would be viewed by the United States and Europe as being of crucial strategic importance because it would bring Syria into the Middle East's pro-Western camp. The US accuses Syria of undermining the US-backed government in n Lebanon, supporting Hezbollah guerrillas in their war with Israel last summer, and of having an involvement in the killing of Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister, in February 2005. Damascus, the Syrian capital, is also home to Khaled Mashal, the exiled leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which refuses to officially recognise Israel's right to exist or renounce violence. Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian President, is also politically close to Iran, which the US accuses of sponsoring terrorism.

IDF Positive on New UNIFIL Commander
By Hana Levi Julian (INN) JAN 16,07

The IDF praises the appointment of Italian Gen. Claudio Graziano as the new head of the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL). French Maj.-Gen. Alain Pellegrini, whom IDF officers said was pro-Hizbullah, steps down in mid-February after three years in the post. IDF sources said his replacement, Gen. Graziano, takes his job seriously and we expect to see a continued crackdown on Hizbullah under his command. Graziano commanded NATO's Kabul Multinational Brigade and has extensive experience in combating insurgency and terrorism. Northern Command sources also praised UNIFIL's 2,500-strong Italian contingent, saying it was working to prevent Hizbullah from returning to its outposts on the border. The UNIFIL troops and the 14,000 Lebanese soldiers stationed in the region add up to a total of around 20,000 troops in the 18-by 31-mile region of southern Lebanon.

Syria is still smuggling arms to the Hizbullah and neither the Lebanese army nor UNIFIL have expressed any intention of preventing the terrorist organization’s efforts to re-arm - a direct violation of the ceasefire terms outlined in U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701. Hizbullah terrorists are also still free to roam at night without fear of being identified by the UNIFIL soldiers, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported two months ago.Spanish UNIFIL official Richard Ortax admitted to the magazine that no patrols are carried out at night because of the danger involved. UNIFIL commanders said their function is to observe changes in the behavior of the local population. Most recently, Hizbullah terrorists tried to bomb the UNIFIL soldiers after a Spanish contingent discovered a large weapons stockpile late last month.IDF Brig.-Gen. Yossi Baidatz said that Hizbullah planted bombs around the weapons so that they would explode when the UNIFIL soldiers came to destroy them. The Spanish troops discovered the bombs and no one was injured.

An Arab Quartet? JAN 16,07
Bruce Maddy-Weitzman,

Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Easter and African Studies (Tel Aviv University)

The growing assertiveness and influence of the (Shiite) Islamic Republic of Iran across the Near East and the Persian Gulf has fostered steadily rising dismay among its Sunni Arab neighbors. Iran’s hand is widely seen as stirring the pot in Lebanon, Iraq and the intra-Palestinian arena. When combined with Tehran’s accelerating nuclear program, calls for Israel’s disappearance and high-profile Holocaust denial activities, Iran’s behavior, as seen from Cairo, Riyadh, Amman and portions of Beirut, poses a threat to the stability of the region, and first and foremost to their own security and survival. In Washington, Jerusalem and London, there has
been expressed interest in the establishment of an Arab Quartet, consisting of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the Gulf principalities, which would complement, and coordinate with the work of the existing international Quartet (US, EU, Russia, UN) on Middle East issues. Could such a grouping be effective?

Their common interests are considerable: checking Iraq’s descent into chaos and the concomitant rise of Shiite power there; supporting the Siniora government in Lebanon against the efforts to topple it by a Syrian-backed, Hizballah-ledcoalition; halting the growing anarchy in the Palestinian Authority areas by supporting some sort of national unity government; and reinvigorating the long-stalled Arab-Israeli peace process, ideally on the basis of the 2002 Beirut Arab summit resolutions. Progress on any or all of these issues would help counter Iran’s bid for regional hegemony. But while their common interests seem to dictate the formation of a strong alliance, there are many obstacles to doing so. The political, economic and military capacities of each of the three non-Arab Middle Eastern states - Turkey, Iran, Israel - outweigh those of Egypt, the historic leader of the Arab world.

Theoretically, the marriage of Saudi and Gulf Arab capital to Egypt’s demographic, cultural and strategic weight could produce an equivalent power center, but when it has come to anything which might impinge on their sovereignty and mastery of their oil wealth, the Peninsula Arabs have always shied away from Egypt’s embrace. In any case, the decline of Egypt’s regional weight has been on ample display in recent years: Mubarak’s American patron utterly disregarded his counsel to refrain from invading Iraq in 2003; exhaustive diplomatic efforts on the internal Palestinian and Israeli-Palestinian fronts produced negligible results; and the Arab League, headed by former Egyptian foreign minister Amr Moussa has proved to be an empty shell, most recently with Moussa’s failed efforts to mediate the political crisis in Lebanon. Domestically, too, Egypt’s situation is hardly bright: the question of succession looms increasingly large, the opposition Muslim Brotherhood has gained in strength, and the regime maintains its autocratic, heavy-handed January 14, 2007 ways. The repeated abilities of al-Qa`ida affiliated groups to strike at tourist sites in the
Sinai region are an ongoing embarrassment.

Saudi-Egyptian cooperation on regional issues in the post-Nasser era was most effective when it included a third pillar: Syria. In October 1973, the Saudis underwrote the Egyptian-Syrian war against Israel; in 1976, the three countries struck an important, albeit temporary agreement on Lebanon and Arab-Israeli diplomacy; in 1990-91, Egypt and Syria provided crucial Arab legitimacy for the
Saudis’ decision to ask for American help to confront Saddam Husayn and evict his forces from Kuwait; the three countries then acted in concert with the US as it jumpstarted Arab-Israeli diplomacy with the Madrid summit conference. But throughout the last three decades, Syria’s interests and policy choices also frequently clashed with one or both of the other two Arab majors, making their cooperation sporadic at best. Neither was ever happy with Syria’s domination of Lebanon, and occasionally sought to clip its wings there. Syria’s vehement rejection of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty left a bad taste in Cairo, while almost concurrently, Syria’s alliance with non-Arab Iran in the war against Arab Iraq during the 1980s conferred near-pariah status on Damascus in the Arab world. Under Bashar Asad, the finesse displayed by his late father in negotiating regional diplomatic pitfalls and minefields disappeared, as Bashar unabashedly carved out a militant Arab nationalist position on most issues, while also deepening his relationship, and even dependence on Iran. Bashar’s unequivocal support for Palestinian radical groups, his strident tone at Arab summit conferences, the apparent Syrian involvement in the murder of Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri and Bashar’s moral and material embrace of Hizballah have left Damascus barely on speaking terms with its Arab neighbors.

Meanwhile, the chaos in Iraq looms large, and Syria’s apparent unwillingness, or inability to prevent the movement of men and supplies from its territory to Sunni insurgents in Iraq, continues to draw American fire (paradoxically, this support contradicts the concern in some Arab quarters that Syria is willingly becoming part of a dreaded Shiite crescent stretching from Tehran to Beirut).

Given Syria’s oppositionist, minority stance among Arab states, it would seem that the first order of business for the prospective Quartet would be to wean Syria away from its alliance with Iran and bring its positions more into line with the rest, beginning with Lebanon. But from the beginning, Syria has viewed its alliance with the Islamic Republic as strategic, and appears to be increasingly dependent on it for aid and support, in Lebanon (Syria’s front yard) and elsewhere. Tired of Bashar’s antics, the Saudis have begun to entertain the notion of supporting regime change from within a disaffected portion of the Syrian elite. For the moment, however, the prospects of success appear low. At the same time, many Arab and Western pundits and politicians fear that destabilization in Syria willbring a radical (Sunni) Islamist regime to power, making their governments reluctant to confront Bashar’s regime directly. In any case, even at the best of times, Arab coalitions have been loose, involving adversaries as much allies, with each state jealously guarding its prerogatives and seeking to maximize its room for independent action - hardly the right stuff for concerted strategic, coordination.Current conditions do not seem auspicious for the establishment of an effective Arab Quartet.

Sunni Arab regimes will thus have to muddle through as best they can in an increasingly problematic regional environment, taking incremental steps to ameliorate specific situations, while remaining heavily dependent on the international community to check Iran’s ambitions and with limited leverage and influence on Western decision-makers.

Temple Aqueduct and Ritual Bath Excavated Opposite Temple Mount
By Ezra HaLevi (INN) JAN 16,07

Excavations being conducted opposite the Western Wall Plaza have uncovered an aqueduct that brought water to the Holy Temple, as well as a ritual bath from that period.

The never-before-excavated area is situated behind the Western Wall police station, adjacent to the plaza where millions of worshipers and tourists come each year to visit the Western Wall and Temple Mount. The new archaeological find uncovers a missing link in the ancient water system, known as the Lower Aqueduct. This system channeled water from Solomon’s Pools near Bethlehem (located several miles south of Jerusalem) directly to the national focal point of Jewish worship - the Temple Mount. Solomon’s pools, situated just north of the modern Jewish town of Efrat, cover an area of about 7 acres and can hold three million gallons of water. A lengthy aqueduct conveyed the water from the lowest pool through Bethlehem, across
the Gihon valley, along the western slope of the Tyropoeon valley, and into the cisterns underneath the Temple Mount. Today, the water from the pools reaches only Bethlehem due to the destruction of the aqueducts. Current plans for the partition wall will leave Solomon’s Pools outside the area of Jewish sovereignty.

The plastered hewn-stone mikva (ritual bath) unearthed at the excavation is from the Second Temple period. It was originally situated in the foundation level of a private home during the time of the Second Temple. The ritual bath was damaged at a later date when the bedrock cliff opposite it was hewn into a vertical wall that rose up to a maximum height of about thirty feet.

The most extensive remains of the period are those of a Roman-Byzantine colonnaded street – the Eastern Cardo. Included in that area is a covered stoa, a row of shops and several artifacts. The street appears on a 6th century map known as the Medaba Map and is known as the Eastern Cardo or the Valley Cardo. The lavish colonnaded street began at the Damascus Gate in the north and led south, running the length of the channel in the Tyropoeon Valley. Sections of this street were revealed in the past in the northern part of the Old City, at a depth of about four meters (12 feet) below the pavement. The full eleven-meter (33 foot) width of the original road was exposed in the present excavation for the first time.

The street was paved with large flagstones that were set in place diagonally, in the customary method of the Roman world, which was probably meant to prevent wagons from slipping, Shlomit Wexler-Bdolah, the director of the excavations, explained. She added that a drainage system was installed below the flagstones. To the west of the street was a covered stoa that was six meters wide, and beyond it was a row of shops set inside cells whose walls were hewn out of the bedrock cliff. A large base of a magnificent corner column has just been exposed in the eastern side of the street and may be part of a building that stood there, or an intersection with an entrance to the road that runs to the east. The Antiquities Authority is carrying out the excavations of the 80 by 200 foot area west of the Western Wall at the request of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation. The area will soon be the site of the Western Wall Heritage Center.

Google Earth map marks Temple Mount Palestinian
Gaza Strip also Israeli occupied, even though Jews withdrew in 2005
January 16, 2007 - By Aaron Klein - 2007 WorldNetDaily.com

JERUSALEM – While Jerusalem serves as Israel's capital, and the Temple Mount is located within Israeli sovereignty, the popular satellite map program Google Earth divides the city and places the Mount Judaism's holiest site within Palestinian territory.

Interactive Google Earth maps mark eastern sections of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount as occupied territory, set to become part of a future Palestinian state. Google Earth states it demarcates its maps according to international standards, but no Israeli-Palestinian negotiations even the failed Camp David final-status negotiations in 2000 ever placed the Temple Mount within Palestinian territory.

Google Earth map shows Temple Mount on Arab side of Jerusalem

The United Nations considers eastern sections of Jerusalem, recaptured by Israel during the 1967 Six Day War, to be disputed The Israeli Knesset officially annexed the entire city of Jerusalem as its capital in 1980. Google Earth is reinforcing lies, Rabbi Chaim Rechman, director of the international department at Israel's Temple Institute, told WND. The Muslims have engaged in a systemic campaign to re-write history and erase any traces of Judaism from the Temple Mount in total disregard to all actual archeological and historic evidence, he continued. Now Google Earth has given in to this campaign. Jerusalem first was divided into eastern and western sections when Jordan invaded and occupied the city and the Temple Mount area in 1947, expelling all Jewish inhabitants.

Israel originally built its capital in the western part of the city, while the eastern quarters remained under Jordanian control until Israel regained them in 1967.

Racist Israel stealing Palestinian water

Google Earth does not limit its input in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Jerusalem alone. The Gaza Strip is labeled by Google Earth as Israeli occupied, even though the Jewish state withdrew from Gaza in August 2005. TotallyJewish.com, a UK-based Jewish website, pointed out an interactive Google Earth map of an Israeli community in the northern West Bank features integrated user comments implying Jews are stealing water from neighboring Palestinians. A posting on a Google map next to the town of Kiryat Arba, near the ancient city of Hebron, states: Note the well-tended lawns in a region deprived of water. Clicking on a weblink in the posting brings the user to a site stating, The principal reason for the water shortage is an unfair distribution of water resources shared by Israel and the Palestinians. The posting decries Israel's purported water-confiscation practices as illegal and racist, even though dozens of major Israeli aquifers, many run by the Jewish National Fund, purify water running through Palestinian cities and return the cleaned water to the Palestinian towns.

Comments on other Google Earth images claim Israel plans to divide parts of Bethlehem, even though no such plan exist. Google Earth is also accused of showing falsified images. Visitors to Google Earth who click on an area just outside Jerusalem can view a computer-generated image claiming to depict an Israeli missile factory. Israeli defense officials told WND the missile factory is a fabrication. Google Earth could not immediately be reached for comment since its corporate offices were closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Day. A Google spokeswoman previously told TotallyJewish.com comments and pictures on satellite maps can be switched off if visitors don't want to see them. She said the company would investigate the offending postings.

Referring to Google erroneously labeling the Gaza Strip as occupied, the spokeswoman said, Borders and place names are not always updated straightaway. Occasionally there are discrepancies. We are happy to receive feedback and will pass it on to the
Google Earth team and take the necessary steps.

Terror leader: Congratulations to Google Earth Mort Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, accused Google Earth of encouraging terrorism. When the Arab terrorists see Google Earth's falsification of geographic realities, they will be appeased and encouraged because these kinds of lying maps send the message that their disinformation campaigns and their terrorism work, Klein told WND. Indeed, Abu Nasser, second-in-command of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, said he was thrilled by Google Earth's depictions.Congratulations to Google Earth, Abu Nasser told WND. We congratulate Google and the American people in making this very important change in the Middle East. The Al Aqsa Mosque (located on the Temple Mount) is part of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem is part of Palestine. If such a big institution like Google corrected these historical mistakes on maps, maybe we can bring about a change in the depictions of Palestine by the American media, which is controlled by the Zionists.

According to Abu Nasser, whose terror group says it is trying to liberate the Al Aqsa Mosque, the Jewish Temple never existed. At least not on the area Jews now call the Temple Mount., he said. Maybe a Temple existed somewhere, but not in Jerusalem. The Temple Mount exists only in the imaginations of the Jews and Americans. Abu Nasser's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades is the declared military wing of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party. The Brigades, together with the Islamic Jihad terror group, has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years, including an attack in Tel Aviv in April that killed American teenager Daniel Wultz and nine Israelis. The revelation's about Google Earth's Mideast map follow media reports this week insurgents in Iraq are using Google's satellite imagery to attack British bases and troops. Intelligence sources quoted by Britain's Daily Telegraph said raids of insurgents last week found printouts of Google satellite photographs of British bases, including details such as toiled blocks, Land Rover parking, and tented areas.

One of the photographs, taken of a hotel housing a British regiment, had the camp's longitude and latitude written on the back, the newspaper said. This is evidence, as far as we are concerned, for planning terrorist attacks, an intelligence officer told The Daily Telegraph. Who would otherwise have Google Earth imagery of one of our bases? A Google spokesman told the newspaper its information could be used for good and bad. Of course we are always ready to listen to governments' requests, he said.
