Serbia: Bill on free trade zones presented
12:43 - 01 June 2006 - Serbian Assistant Minister of Finance Vesna Hreljac-Ivanovic said that the new bill on free trade zones, drafted under World Trade Organisation (WTO) and EU standards, removes limiting factors which existed in this area so far. In a press conference Hreljac-Ivanovic presented new bills on free trade zones and foreign currency operations that the government approved in its last session. She noted that the founder makes a decision to set up a free trade zone, after which the company for managing the zone is established and a request is sent to state authorities, reports SMT.
The founder can establish only one company for managing a zone so as to prevent a monopoly, she explained adding that the company needs to submit evidence on technical and economic conditions. She also said that a special commission will be in charge of grading these conditions and added that the company will also have to submit a report on free trade zone feasibility. There will be tax incentives for setting up free trade zones, Hreljac-Ivanovic said. According to her, a report on operations will be submitted once a year. She also added that there are three zones in Serbia at the moment: in Subotica, Zrenjanin and Pirot, which are obliged to submit demands for new licences within 90 days after the law comes into effect. However, these three zones will not be obliged to submit new reports, she added. Assistant Minister responsible for foreign currency inspection Lidija Smiljanic said that the bill on foreign currency operations was drafted in cooperation with the National Bank of Serbia (NBS).
This law will liberalise financial transactions and will allow the purchase of securities issued by foreign issuers, she said. The new regulations on financial transactions should put an end to foreign currency operations by presenting fake invoices, Smiljanic said expressing hope that the bill will be passed by parliament in June. AdvertisementScientists have discovered crustaceans and scorpion-like invertebrates living in an underground cave that has been sealed off from the rest of the world for millions of years.Geologists from Jerusalem's Hebrew University made the discovery at a quarry near Ramla in central Israel after opening passages to a cave containing a lake and a unique ecosystem 100 metres below ground.Biologists found white crustaceans resembling prawns and invertebrates similar to scorpions. The cave also contained bacteria that served as food.
So far eight species were found in the cave, all of them unknown to science," biologist Hanan Dimantman said. Every species examined had no eyes, so they lost their sight due to evolution. Apart from the scorpions, all are alive. The scorpions are dead but we are sure live scorpions are to be found under boulders.The cave, with a maze of passages that extend about two kilometres, is sealed off from surface water and nutrients by a layer of chalk. The scientists said the lake's temperature and salinity indicated it drew its water from deep underground. The cave's ecosystem began forming about 5 million years ago, when part of Israel was covered by the Mediterranean Sea.- GUARDIAN

EU nations to issue biometric passports Thu Jun 1, 11:03 AM ET
LUXEMBOURG - European Union nations will have to start issuing new secure biometric passports with a chip containing facial features by the end of August, EU officials said Thursday, and prepare to add fingerprint data to the travel documents by 2009. By Aug. 26 of this year member states will need to be able ... to include a facial image in a chip," said Friso Roscam Abbing, spokesman for EU Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner Franco Frattini. He said Frattini would present plans to EU justice and interior ministers for adding fingerprints to the new biometric passports in two to three weeks time.
Roscam Abbing said the new biometric features, which reduce patterns of fingerprints, faces and irises to mathematical algorithms stored on a chip, would go beyond security standards demanded by the United States.EU nations participating in the American visa-waiver program were given until October this year to comply with U.S. standards to have either a digital photo or a chip containing biometric data in their passports if they wanted to continue visa-free travel to the U.S.

The holiday of Shavuot (Feast of Weeks), one of the three Biblical pilgrimage-to-Jerusalem festivals, marks the Jewish People's receiving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai 3,318 years ago. Tens of thousands are expected to arrive at the Western Wall throughout Thursday night and Friday morning, in commemoration of the Biblical commandment to visit Jerusalem on this holiday. The commandment, like some others in the Torah, is not binding when the Holy Temple is not in place.
The Shavuot holiday of 1967 (5727), which followed the Six-Day War and the liberation of Jerusalem by only a few days, was the first holiday in 1,900 years in which masses of Jews congregated at the Western Wall.
Shavuot also marks the day after the 49-day Sefirat HaOmer counting period, which begins on the Passover holiday. The counting denotes the fact that the ultimate purpose of the Exodus from Egypt was for the Jewish People to receive the Torah and begin its national/spiritual existence as the People of the Book.
Shavuot is celebrated for one day by those who live in the Land of Israel, as originally prescribed by the Torah. However, outside Israel, in accordance with rabbinic tradition because of the lack of calendric certainty, the holiday is celebrated for two days.
Features of the Shavuot holiday include:
* remaining awake all night to study Torah;
* the bringing of the Bikurim (First Fruits) to the Holy Temple;
* the time of the wheat harvest;
* the public reading of the Book of Ruth;

Fenton is a member of the National Religious Party and is the Chairperson of the Council for the Advancement of Women's Status in Jerusalem. Her letter blasts the influx and growing influence of Christian Evangelical money - and specifically the IFCJ, headed by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein - in 100 local and municipal councils throughout Israel: As a member of the Jerusalem City Council, I received an invitation to the Second Local Government Convention, under the sponsorship of (or dependence on) the IFCJ, in Tel Aviv University, May 30-31.
The convention, entitled, "From Dependence to Independence in Local Government, is a contradiction in terms. Holding such a convention under the sponsorship /dependence of Evangelical money certainly does not lead to independence...The IFCJ is a private body with its own interests, which is penetrating into the institutions of power in the country, with hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred to the Welfare Ministry, local municipal welfare offices, associations, and more.The IFCJ takes pride in its takeover of the welfare institutions in the country via the Welfare Ministry and municipal councils. It has succeeded in penetrating some 100 municipal councils; all the evidence and data are found in the IFCJ's announcements.
The Wednesday morning session of the convention is billed as, "Buckling Under the Burden - Welfare in a Changing Reality (under the sponsorship of the IFCJ).What does this mean. Are the convention planners telling us that this "Friendship Fund" is the one that will take responsibility for providing solutions for the welfare budgetary problem in the country's difficult and changing reality? Will the Evangelists set a new public agenda for us? Will they determine how much the current welfare laws apply to the changing social reality in Israel?
This is a take-over, creating a dependency. We must remember: "He who'll pay, has the say.Dependence has a price! Ruth Sinai, writing in Haaretz on Jan. 7, 2006, notes, "It is hard to find a single local council in this country that is not supported by loyal American Christians, via the IFCJ. In four years of the fund's activity in Israel, it has become the leading philanthropic organization in the country.Sinai quotes Adi Eldar, Mayor of Carmiel and Chairman of the Local Government Center (who himself receives funding from the IFCJ for Carmiel and makes sure that others get as well - M.F.), who said, "The Fund supports the weaker members of society in place of the State [emphasis in the original]...Sinai further details the municipal council activities: Staff from the Fund hold advisory meetings with the Welfare Ministry and local municipal employees regarding goals and criteria.
Well then, who is in charge of welfare in this country? Who determines policy? Who is in charge of whom? Who is responsible? Who is dependent? Who at all is independent?!? The film "On Wings of Eagles" shows montages of Yitzak Rabin and Yasser Arafat shaking hands in Oslo in 1994 together with images of the Twin Towers crumbling down, with a narrator intoning, "The mosaic of events we see happening today is like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle with the pieces beginning to form the exact picture foretold by the prophets. Eckstein is then seen standing on a mountaintop, saying, You can see the pieces of the puzzle that are coming together - apparently referring to the pieces of the Christian-religious puzzle.
The acceptance of Evangelical money has been the subject of various Halakhic [Jewish legal] rulings, though an unambiguous stance has not yet been formulated. Some say it is forbidden to take any money, some say it is permitted, and others say it may be used only to fund non-educational causes. Among those in the forefront of the opposition to accepting such money are Rabbi Simcha HaCohen Kook of Rehovot and Rabbi Shlomo Aviner of Beit El.

(AFP) - Rain has lashed Mumbai again as this year's early-arriving monsoon caused travel chaos and brought back memories of last year's devastating floods that left hundreds dead. One man drowned in the stormy sea off the peninsula city on India's west coast and commuters were stranded for hours late Wednesday because of flooded roads and late-running trains. The monsoon rains arrived several days earlier than expected and city officials had not yet completed anti-flooding measures, including finishing a project to dredge a river that runs through the city.It has taken one heavy rainfall at the beginning of the season for the authorities to have been caught unprepared,said an editorial in the DNA newspaper Thursday.
Environmentalist Anil Bhatia said the city was better prepared for the rains this year after record rainfall on July 26 in 2005 swept away slum dwellings, cut electricity and severed the city from the rest of the country for a day.Neglected drainage facilities and rampant illegal development, that left natural waterways blocked, were blamed for many of the problems.
Bhatia said decades of people flowing into the city of nearly 20 million, development and concreting of green spaces had all added to the city's drainage woes.Land use change has become so predominant, I would say it would take up to five years before we have a (anti-flooding) system in place again,he said.The annual monsoon rains began sweeping through India in late May and the several months of rain are vital to the country's agriculture.

People in La Tuque, Que., braced for more rain — and more repairs — Wednesday as they tried to clean up after a violent storm overnight. Officials say 100 millimetres of rain fell in just a few hours on the city, about 100 kilometres north of Shawinigan. Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region. "A warm, humid and unstable air mass is affecting
most of southern and central Quebec,the warning states.The forecast is for showers or possibly thunderstorms in the afternoon and there is a risk of a severe thunderstorm in the evening.
The rain was part of a major weather system that rolled across western Quebec overnight causing flooding in some areas as well as landslides and fires. The storm in La Tuque damaged several roads and washed out part of the main route along the St-Maurice River. A number of homes were cut off as a result and at least 13 people have had to seek shelter elsewhere.
State of emergency
Rejean Gaudreault, the city's mayor, declared a state of emergency and local officials were meeting with provincial police to discuss the situation. As well, local Liberal MNA Julie Boulet was expected to tour the area to assess the damage. Gaudreault said it may take several days to repair all the routes.A truck was caught in one of the landslides but no one was hurt, Gaudreault said. Officials say soil saturation and high water levels have them worried that more landslides may be unavoidable.
Natives, dam affected
The heavy rains also took out part of the road from La Tuque to the local hydro dam and to the Wemotaci native community. In Laval, meanwhile, a lightning strike is being blamed for a fire that damaged a residential construction site, destroying some of the six homes in the area. People were already living in two of the houses while four others were still under construction.

Part I of this article discussed the background and early days of the new Sanhedrin. The chain of ordination began in 2004 with the ordination of Rabbi Moshe Halberstam, who ordained Rabbi Dov Levanoni, who passed it down to the other rabbis. A Sanhedrin of 71 rabbis convened in Tiberius on the 10th of Shevat, 5765 (Jan. 20, 2005). This is just the second time in 1,600 years that this unique event has occurred.
The Sanhedrin includes rabbis from diverse backgrounds: Charedi, religious-Zionist, Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Chassidic, Lithuanian, and others. The ordination of these rabbis is part of the process to reestablish the Sanhedrin, but they will not necessarily be the final members. Each of the rabbis currently sitting on the Sanhedrin pledged that he has assumed his seat on condition that he will relinquish it to anyone greater in Torah who wishes to join. It is hoped that the release of several of the names of those involved in the Sanhedrin will encourage those who believe that their own rabbis or teachers are qualified to be part of this endeavor to recommend that their rabbi be included in the Sanhedrin. Those interested in becoming involved with the Sanhedrin should contact the Sanhedrin secretariat.
The new Sanhedrin has at least the authority of a regular bet din, if not more. Among the many topics the Sanhedrin intends to address are: the bridging of the divisions between various communities of Jewish exiles who have returned to Israel; the establishment of authentic techelet, the blue thread that is part of tzizit; the definition of the measurement of the ammah (the biblical cubit) and the determination of the exact point of human death, so as to deal with the Jewish ethics of transplants. The Sanhedrin will also establish a forum of architects and engineers to begin plans for rebuilding the Temple.
The 71 rabbis, who are members of the Sanhedrin are Torah scholars, and many are experts in secular and scientific fields. The 71 rabbis elected a seven-member leadership council that meets once a week in Jerusalem to prepare for the Sanhedrin meetings and represent the institution in dealings with the public.The following are the members of the council: The nasi (president) is Rabbi Adin Even Israel (Steinzaltz), a talmudic scholar who began his monumental translation and commentary of the Talmud in 1965, established a network of schools in Israel and Russia, and has received honorary degrees from Yeshiva University, Bar Ilan U., Ben Gurion U. and Florida International U. The Av Bet-Din (chancellor) is Rabbi Nacham Kahana, a graduate of Yeshivat Mir, a rabbinic scholar and the rabbi of the Young Israel of Jerusalem’s Old City.
He is currently working on an interpretation the Tosafot of the Talmud. He is also the director of the Institute for Talmudic Commentaries and has created a database of reliable Kohanim in Israel. Rabbi Yoel Schwartz is the assistant Av Bet-Din. He is a Torah scholar and a prolific writer who has published over 200 seforim. He learned at Yeshivat Ponevitz and Yeshivat Mir and was the mashgiach of Yeshivat Itri and the spiritual advisor of the Nahal Charedi (ultra-religious army program).
There are four other distinguished members. Rabbi Dov Levanoni is a Torah scholar, a prolific author and the author of Hamikdah, a description of the Second Temple according to Rambam. Rabbi Yisroel Ariel, who was a rosh yeshiva, the spiritual leader of Yamit and the founder of Machon HaMikdash, served in the paratroop unit that liberated the Kotel in the Six-Day War. Rabbi Dov Stein received ordination from Rav Sternberg of the Eda Hareidi. For the past 20 years he has been the spirit behind the renewal of the Sanhedrin and serves as its secretary.
He is well-known for his responses to secular questions about our principals of faith on the
Internet at http://www.thesanhedrin.org/, Rabbi Yehuda Edri is a Torah scholar, supervisor and principal for the Chareidi Shas Party’s El Hamaayan Educational system. He is an expert on the location of the Temple and its measurements. The Sanhedrin has also set up two Batei Din (sub-courts) and one Va’ada (sub-committee). The Special Court for Matters Concerning the Nation and the State, with its chief justice, Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, concerns itself with the government and Jewish law.Since 1948, the government of Israel has in general been a socialist, secular government taht exercises civil authority in the majority of the land of Israel. Although this government is made up largely of Jews, it is increasingly distancing itself from its Jewish culture and religious heritage.

People in La Tuque, Que., braced for more rain — and more repairs — Wednesday as they tried to clean up after a violent storm overnight. Officials say 100 millimetres of rain fell in just a few hours on the city, about 100 kilometres north of Shawinigan. Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region. "A warm, humid and unstable air mass is affecting
most of southern and central Quebec,the warning states.The forecast is for showers or possibly thunderstorms in the afternoon and there is a risk of a severe thunderstorm in the evening.
The rain was part of a major weather system that rolled across western Quebec overnight causing flooding in some areas as well as landslides and fires. The storm in La Tuque damaged several roads and washed out part of the main route along the St-Maurice River. A number of homes were cut off as a result and at least 13 people have had to seek shelter elsewhere.
State of emergency
Rejean Gaudreault, the city's mayor, declared a state of emergency and local officials were meeting with provincial police to discuss the situation. As well, local Liberal MNA Julie Boulet was expected to tour the area to assess the damage. Gaudreault said it may take several days to repair all the routes.A truck was caught in one of the landslides but no one was hurt, Gaudreault said. Officials say soil saturation and high water levels have them worried that more landslides may be unavoidable.
Natives, dam affected
The heavy rains also took out part of the road from La Tuque to the local hydro dam and to the Wemotaci native community. In Laval, meanwhile, a lightning strike is being blamed for a fire that damaged a residential construction site, destroying some of the six homes in the area. People were already living in two of the houses while four others were still under construction.

Part I of this article discussed the background and early days of the new Sanhedrin. The chain of ordination began in 2004 with the ordination of Rabbi Moshe Halberstam, who ordained Rabbi Dov Levanoni, who passed it down to the other rabbis. A Sanhedrin of 71 rabbis convened in Tiberius on the 10th of Shevat, 5765 (Jan. 20, 2005). This is just the second time in 1,600 years that this unique event has occurred.
The Sanhedrin includes rabbis from diverse backgrounds: Charedi, religious-Zionist, Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Chassidic, Lithuanian, and others. The ordination of these rabbis is part of the process to reestablish the Sanhedrin, but they will not necessarily be the final members. Each of the rabbis currently sitting on the Sanhedrin pledged that he has assumed his seat on condition that he will relinquish it to anyone greater in Torah who wishes to join. It is hoped that the release of several of the names of those involved in the Sanhedrin will encourage those who believe that their own rabbis or teachers are qualified to be part of this endeavor to recommend that their rabbi be included in the Sanhedrin. Those interested in becoming involved with the Sanhedrin should contact the Sanhedrin secretariat.
The new Sanhedrin has at least the authority of a regular bet din, if not more. Among the many topics the Sanhedrin intends to address are: the bridging of the divisions between various communities of Jewish exiles who have returned to Israel; the establishment of authentic techelet, the blue thread that is part of tzizit; the definition of the measurement of the ammah (the biblical cubit) and the determination of the exact point of human death, so as to deal with the Jewish ethics of transplants. The Sanhedrin will also establish a forum of architects and engineers to begin plans for rebuilding the Temple.
The 71 rabbis, who are members of the Sanhedrin are Torah scholars, and many are experts in secular and scientific fields. The 71 rabbis elected a seven-member leadership council that meets once a week in Jerusalem to prepare for the Sanhedrin meetings and represent the institution in dealings with the public.The following are the members of the council: The nasi (president) is Rabbi Adin Even Israel (Steinzaltz), a talmudic scholar who began his monumental translation and commentary of the Talmud in 1965, established a network of schools in Israel and Russia, and has received honorary degrees from Yeshiva University, Bar Ilan U., Ben Gurion U. and Florida International U. The Av Bet-Din (chancellor) is Rabbi Nacham Kahana, a graduate of Yeshivat Mir, a rabbinic scholar and the rabbi of the Young Israel of Jerusalem’s Old City.
He is currently working on an interpretation the Tosafot of the Talmud. He is also the director of the Institute for Talmudic Commentaries and has created a database of reliable Kohanim in Israel. Rabbi Yoel Schwartz is the assistant Av Bet-Din. He is a Torah scholar and a prolific writer who has published over 200 seforim. He learned at Yeshivat Ponevitz and Yeshivat Mir and was the mashgiach of Yeshivat Itri and the spiritual advisor of the Nahal Charedi (ultra-religious army program).
There are four other distinguished members. Rabbi Dov Levanoni is a Torah scholar, a prolific author and the author of Hamikdah, a description of the Second Temple according to Rambam. Rabbi Yisroel Ariel, who was a rosh yeshiva, the spiritual leader of Yamit and the founder of Machon HaMikdash, served in the paratroop unit that liberated the Kotel in the Six-Day War. Rabbi Dov Stein received ordination from Rav Sternberg of the Eda Hareidi. For the past 20 years he has been the spirit behind the renewal of the Sanhedrin and serves as its secretary.

It appeared to be an unconsequential event. The small republic of Montenegro, by means of a referendum, withdrew peacefully from the federation it had formed with Serbia.With a view of the Mediterranean, Montenegro occupies little more than 13,000 square kilometers -- the size of Connecticut -- and has barely 620,000 people. Most of them are of Slav origin, nominally Orthodox Christians, although there is a noticeable Islamic minority, the product of the old and very reduced Turkish influence in the Balkans.
Of course, there are historical reasons that explain the breakaway, but probably one of the elements that encouraged the Montenegrins to set up tents elsewhere was the currency. A few years ago, they took the happy initiative to renounce the Yugoslav dinar -- the Serbian currency -- and adopt the euro. Contrary to what was happening in Serbia, that move gave economic solidity to Montenegro, controlled inflation and stimulated foreign investment. The conclusion was simple: Standing under Brussels umbrella granted stability to Montenegrin society and
increased its chances of development. The choice between a troubled and poor partner like Serbia and a powerful and organized partner like the European Union was a no-brainer.
Besides, the European Union meant something else: It was a source of political legitimacy and security. When EU authorities established that if only 55 percent of all Montenegrins asked for independence Brussels would give them its blessing, that simple rule served as a stimulus to the separatists. The Serbs -- who were not asked for their opinion -- did not dare challenge the European Union, mostly because in the 1990s they had a taste of NATO's very persuasive bombardments. Taking their tents elsewhere, then, was relatively easy for the people of Montenegro.The Montenegro episode had an immediate repercussion in Spain. Basque and Catalonian separatists watched it with eyes filled with hope. If the European Union permitted the breakup of Serbia-Montenegro by means of a referendum where more than 55 percent voted in favor, would it dare apply a different standard to Spain?
If more than 55 percent of all Catalonians or Basques requested independence, they would likely get it, even though the rest of the Spaniards could voice no opinion about the secession of two territories that for centuries have formed an essential part of the complex national mosaic.
The great paradox is that the European Union, which emerged to strengthen nations within a grand design, has ended up weakening them for the benefit of ethnic regions and groups that speak different languages. If the euro is an international currency and European laws and judicial authorities prevail over local justice, what use is the national state?
If the European Parliament gains increasing competence and the seeds of a grand pan-European Army germinate and grow, what real attributes are left for the national state. What we're witnessing is the beginning of the end of a very long historical process that began in the Middle Ages five or six centuries ago, when the modern states were built with the fragments of the feudal world that emerged from the collapse of the Roman Empire.
England, Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, the great nations that were forged then and dominated the planet for centuries (although some, like Italy and Germany, were slow to coalesce into unitarian states), are beginning to dilute into a benevolent bureaucracy, faithful to the values of the Enlightenment, ruled by a social-democratic view of the economy, and fortunately organized by democratic methods that respect human rights. Is that good for the Europeans and for the world.
Maybe. Yes as grounds for peaceful coexistence, but probably No as a center for scientific, technical and economic initiatives. The enormous effort to coordinate the interests and peculiarities of 100 ethnic groups and 40 languages, plus the bureaucratic tendency
to regulate and unify usages and customs, people and activities, surely will slow down the creative processes, gradually distancing the European Union from more dynamic and efficient foci of action, such as the United States, Japan and China.
In any case, it doesn't appear that the steps taken by the European Union can be reversed. If throughout the centuries the modern states assimilated strange components that seemed indigestible (who today can remember the glory of the Burgundians or the Prussians?), now we face a contrary process, a process of disunion that liquidates or erodes states as it integrates them into a supranational unit that functions by means of very effective administrative structures but has no emotional handles.
Where will this gigantic experiment in political engineering end? No one can tell. What does seem obvious, however, is that no one can stop it.
I must say at this last story I disagree with the author that 1967 recapture of Jerusalem was not the end of the times of the Gentiles. I myself think it was, The gentiles at the end of the 7 yr treaty only capture Jerusalem for a day or week at the most, then Jesus comes back to earth and rules and reigns for 1000 yrs and forever.

On June 7, 1967, a date clear to the heart of every patriotic Israeli, the army of Israel captured the Old City of Jerusalem. The previous month the Egyptians had decided to attempt once more to conquer Israel. Israel felt its only hope was to launch a preemptive strike, which it did on June 5. Two days later the Israelis captured the Old City of Jerusalem, which had been part of
Jordan. As a result of this military victory in what is known as the Six-Day War, Israel once again possessed her ancient capital.
From the beginning of Jesus' ministry he warned the Jews of God's coming wrath unless they repented (Matthew 3:8). The Roman army, under general Titus, completely destroyed the city and temple in A.D. 70. Jesus had also prophesied that following its defeat "Jerusalem will be…trampled down by the Gentiles until the age of the Gentiles comes to an end" (Luke 21:24). Does this mean that the "age of the Gentiles" came to end on June 7, 1967?
Revelation 11:2 seems to answer no. It states that the Gentiles "will trample the holy city for forty-two months," apparently the three and a half years period to the second coming of Christ, implying that the Jews will not be in control of Jerusalem at this time. June 7, 1967 was an
extremely significant event in Jewish history, but it was not the fulfillment of prophecy.
Reflection
When you read the unfulfilled prophecies of the Bible, do you believe that they will be literally fulfilled? Two U.S. Marine cargo planes carrying a mobile field hospital landed Tuesday in Yogyakarta, closest to the quake area in central Java, after cracks in the airport runway were patched. A disaster assistance response team from the U.S. Agency for International Development is being readied and the amphibious assault ship USS Essex, which has extensive medical facilities, is en route to the area, White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. The United States also increased its aid contribution to $5 million.
The United Nations said at least 21 other countries have joined the effort to help those left homeless by Saturday's magnitude-6.3 quake, which killed more than 5,800 people. An estimated 647,000 people were displaced by the quake, nearly a third of them homeless and the rest staying with relatives, said Bambang Priyohadi, a senior provincial government official. The government said Wednesday the temblor destroyed more than 135,000 homes, reducing them to piles of bricks, tiles and wood in less than a minute.
Priyohadi based the displaced figure on the number of homes destroyed and a family index of 4.8 people per house. Mariana Islands - A visiting scientist is downplaying the risks of underwater volcanoes, which surround the Northern Marianas Islands. Frank Trusdell, a Hawaii-based geologist from the U.S. Geological Survey, said although so-called submarine volcanoes can cause tsunamis if they erupt, the ones around the waters of the islands are not a major threat due to their small size.Land volcanoes in this U.S. commonwealth's chain of 14 islands are the ones that people should be wary of because they are powerful enough to destroy habitats, property and lives, he said.As far as volcanic eruptions and being concerned about volcanoes, the ones that are above sea level are the ones that should be monitored and what people should focus their energy on,he said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that it successfully videotaped a volcanic eruption underneath the calm waters at Brimstone Pit, about 37 miles northwest of Rota Island.The agency said Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory oceanographer Bob Embley, who led a team of 21 international scientists on three expeditions, successfully recorded the underwater explosion using robots.Trusdell said there are several active submarine volcanoes among the Northern Marianas and there are many inactive ones which are buried deep under the ocean that have yet to be discovered.You can imagine that each of the volcanic islands is the top of a large mountain range. So only the tops of the mountain range are above sea level, he said.
In between the islands, there is a possibility of what we call sea mountains which are submarine volcanoes. There are many of them in the Northern Marianas.A detailed map of the locations of the submarine volcanoes was done between 2003 and 2004.
Based on the map, scientists have identified several active submarine volcanoes.Trusdell said the volcanoes are shallow enough so that people saw discolored water or gases during an eruption.But there are many other volcanoes that are below the ocean floor, which are too deep to be recognized at the surface, he said.

Smog is making it hard for people to breath in Toronto. We have had 4 hot muggy days and the air is bad. This weather makes it hard for people with Alergies and heart diseases.

For some reason I have Ella Fitzgerald in my head singing the Cole Porter classic "we're having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave... In my previous blog from last weekend, I was talking about the cold and rain during the May longweekend last week. Well, welcome to Toronto! where in a week we have had temperatures jump to 33 degrees celsius with a humidex of 42 degrees. Which means when you are outside it feels as if it is 42 degrees! It is just after 10am here in Toronto and already it is 28 degrees celsius.
God bless Global warming or whatever is causing this! We have a smog alert and it is just hot, humid and nasty outside. As a true north girl, I really hate this heat and humidity...I can't wait til fall and winter. I don't mind this type of heat if I am in a place like Florida or the Caribbean where you at least have some cool breezes coming in from the ocean. Here all we have is concrete and tall buildings.
As we are situated on the very large lake Ontario you would think we would get some cool breezes but we have built up the waterfront with so many towers and condominiums there is nowhere for the breezes to blow! (the waterfront mess, i will save for a future blog) As a city we do have a lot of trees but I fear with this heat and smog they are suffering and not able to perform their task of keeping the air as fresh and cool as they used to.
To make matters worse, our wonderful TTC (public transit) workers decided to walk off the job yesterday holding the city to ransom. It caused sheer gridlock throughout the city and almost 1 million people had to find alternate ways to get to work. Walking to work in 42 degree humidex temperatures is not fun. Thank god i was lucky enough to get a lift in from JB in our air conditioned car and my co-worker Platt gave me lift home in his airconditioned car. Bet all the extra cars on the road made the air even better! The photo shows the thousands of stranded commuters walking up Bay Street from the train station.
Temperatures are supposed to go down to a more reasonable 23/24 degrees by tomorrow and through to the rest of the week and the Mayor legislated all the workers back to work last night.,posted by JMacK at 9:33 AM

According to Agayev, the agenda was developed at the final meeting of the expert group consisting of the representatives of the world religious unions in Moscow.
During the meeting, there were held opinion exchange and offered the topics for the discussion of the religious leaders at the World summit. The meeting of the experts brought together the representatives of the Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism from Azerbaijan, Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Greece, Egypt, Israel, India, Italy, China, Latvia, Russia, Rumania, the USA, Turkey, Finland, Vatican, German, Syria, France, Switzerland and Estonia. The participants of the meeting noted that the primary dialogue of the different traditional religions was the responsibility and the public anxiety about the fate of the mankind.
According to Agayev, the following topics were offered for discussion: the role of the religion in the contemporary society, protection and affirmation of spiritual and moral values in the contemporary society and the responsibility of the religion for this, ways of eliminating terrorism and extremism, education and necessity to morally bring up youth, support for family values and human life, the role of the religion in the ecological responsibility, dialogue and partnership and etc. As a result of the summit, there will be accepted an appeal which will be forwarded to the heads of states, political communities and all members of the religious
communities. During the summit, sheykhi ruslam Alahshukur Pashazade, the chairman of the Caucasian Moslem Department, will hold several bilateral meetings with religious leaders.
The initiator of the summit is the head of the Russian Orthodox Church and the patriarchy of Moscow and All Russia Rusi Aleksey II.
Two Other Earthquakes in Indonesia
Kompas today reports that there two more other earthquake in Wamena, regent capital of Jayawijaya, Papua province on thursday (30/06/2006) 12.28 AM local time, and another in Padang provincial capital of West Sumatra. While the former almost similar to that of Yogyakarta quake with 6 richter scale, the latter was around 4-5 richter scale.No casualties being reported on the latest two earthquake.
In the meanwhile, help relief efforts are pouring in from various countries. The US promises to donate $5 million, Japan sends its relief team to the ground and others promise some commitments as well reports Detik The number of death toll that reach 5,000 more and injured casualties double that figures make many voluenteers come in flock to the region to offer help.A western NGO personnel who was interviewed a few hours ago by CNN said that during his 20-year help relief operation experience around the world, never ever he saw such devastating scene as that of Yogyarkarta earthquake.He also said that the most immediate help needed for now are shelter, food, water, blanket/clothes, and medicines.

Kompas today reports that there two more other earthquake in Wamena, regent capital of Jayawijaya, Papua province on thursday (30/06/2006) 12.28 AM local time, and another in Padang provincial capital of West Sumatra. While the former almost similar to that of Yogyakarta quake with 6 richter scale, the latter was around 4-5 richter scale.No casualties being reported on the latest two earthquake.
In the meanwhile, help relief efforts are pouring in from various countries. The US promises to donate $5 million, Japan sends its relief team to the ground and others promise some commitments as well reports Detik The number of death toll that reach 5,000 more and injured casualties double that figures make many voluenteers come in flock to the region to offer help.A western NGO personnel who was interviewed a few hours ago by CNN said that during his 20-year help relief operation experience around the world, never ever he saw such devastating scene as that of Yogyarkarta earthquake.He also said that the most immediate help needed for now are shelter, food, water, blanket/clothes, and medicines.

Spain and eight other European countries agreed the initiative on Monday (29 May) after a meeting between representatives of the European Commission and the European Border Agency (FRONTEX) in Madrid. Austria, Finland, France, Italy, UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Greece are all to take part in the patrols.Deputy prime minister Maria Teresa Fernandez De La Vega was reported as saying by the Spanish Herald that this is a common policy on frontier control for the first time on the part of the European Union.
Spanish secretary of state for security Antonio Camacho said that the operation will go on throughout the summer and may continue into the autumn.The operation will involve five patrol boats, five helicopters and an airplane which will attempt to reduce the number of boats sailing from Mauritania, Senegal and Cape Verde toward the southern part of Spain. The Spanish Herald reports that half of the costs will be paid by the commission, with the rest of the costs still to be allocated. More than 400 migrants landed on the Canary Islands last weekend while another 350 arrived in Spain in small boats on Monday. This year nearly 7,000 migrants have already landed on the islands. The number was around 4,750 in 2005 and just over 8,500 in 2004.
Malta and Italy are also set to face increased illegal immigration during the summer months. A group of 24 illegal immigrants landed on the tiny island of Malta on Sunday – making it the fourth group of immigrants to be rescued since the warmer weather set in. A group of 25 illegal immigrants from Sudan arrived on Wednesday and 23 Eritreans were brought in last week. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is planning a second withdrawal from most of Judea and Samaria, mountainous terrain within rocket firing range of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the country's international airport.
Early today, a special IDF unit entered deep inside the Gaza Strip and set up an ambush within the ruins of Dagit, a coastal town that previously was part of Gush Katif, the slate of Gaza's Jewish communities Israel evacuated last August. The town has been regularly used the past few months by terrorists to fire Qassam missiles at Jewish neighborhoods bordering Gaza. When an Islamic Jihad Qassam missile crew arrived, reportedly intending to fire rockets, the IDF forces opened fire. The troops, backed by an IAF helicopter gunship and a naval unit, killed four Jihad members. After a fierce gun battle with nearby militants who joined in the clashes, the IDF unit exited Gaza without any casualties.
Military officials described the Gaza operation as "high risk" and "well orchestrated." It was the deepest the IDF has operated in Gaza since the August withdrawal. Until now, the Israeli army has attempted to halt Qassam rocket fire from outside Gaza mostly utilizing artillery units and airial strikes. Soldiers on two occasions the past few months entered Gaza but only a few feet deep to search for explosives along a border fence. Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz vowed today operations against Qassam launch cells in Gaza would continue by air, sea and, if needed, with ground operations in order to prevent further rocket fire. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza more over 400 rockets have been fired at adjacent Jewish communities. More than ten rockets were fired in the last week alone. Two rockets were fired this morning.
Israel says it has information rockets have been transferred from the Gaza Strip to Judea and Samaria. For many, the reports of troops entering Gaza actualize warnings repeatedly voiced by opponents of the Gaza withdrawal plan prior to its implementation. Some military leaders, including former Gaza commanders and a former Israeli defense minister, have been calling on Israel in recent weeks to reoccupy parts of Gaza to halt terror operations and the regular Qassam firings. Don't panic: an apparent surge in earthquakes and eruptions in the southwestern Pacific is par for the course in Earth's most explosive zone. The 40,000-kilometre Pacific Rim of Fire begins in New Zealand and curls its way northward around the edge of the Pacific Ocean to South America, with about 90 per cent of the world's earthquakes and 75 per cent of known volcanoes on its boundary. Nearly 5000 people were killed in Indonesia after a 6.3-magnitude quake struck near Yogyakarta on Saturday morning.
Volcanic activity has resumed at nearby Mt Merapi. Two powerful quakes – even stronger than that which rocked Yogyakarta – struck within 15 minutes of each other near Papua New Guinea and Tonga on Sunday. In Vanuatu, four volcanoes are being monitored after three began spitting rocks, ash and steam. A magnitude-5.5 quake struck the north Philippines on Sunday night.
But GNS Science geologist Cornel de Ronde said the apparent surge of activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire was "perfectly normal. Geological history tells us that these sorts of events have been going all the time in the past, he said. Ultimately all these recent events are linked by virtue; they are all on the ring of fire but you cannot directly connect them as being triggered by one another, or being a precursor to other events. Dr de Ronde said the Rim of Fire was marked by the boundary between the Pacific Plate and some smaller adjoining tectonic plates.
The Pacific Plate was being slowly shunted under adjoining plates on its western edge, causing earthquakes and chains of volcanic activity. As the plate goes down it gets to a point, about 200 kilometres deep, where it melts into magma. As a consequence we get all these earthquakes and volcanoes popping up.
Dr de Ronde said New Zealand intersected a plate boundary and was part of the explosive chain. Lower Hutt is in the Pacific Plate and Wellington is on the Australian Plate. According to the United States Geological Survey, there have been an average of 19.4 quakes of magnitude 7.0-plus in the rim each year, which means the seismic activity of the past few days is comparatively slight. Earlier this month, a 7.8-magnitude jolt off Tonga sparked a Pacific tsunami warning. In March, Conservation Department worker Mark Kearney was killed when Raoul Island erupted.
Dr de Ronde said it was likely a lot of seismic and volcanic activity went unnoticed in the many chains of deep- sea volcanoes – known as arcs – that skirt the Pacific. New Zealand's volcanoes and earthquakes are monitored by the GNS Science GeoNet division, which is funded by the Earthquake Commission. GNS Science seismologist Mark Chadwick said 40 monitoring stations 100km apart fed nonstop seismic information to laboratories in Wellington. New Zealand's volcanoes were also monitored by GPS, which detected subtle movements, and regular checks on crater temperatures. Though the recent swarm of shakes and volcanic activity in the Rim of Fire was not an indication that disaster was pending, Dr Chadwick said the threat of a powerful quake or an eruption in New Zealand was ever present.
Two moderate earthquakes registered in Koryakia over past day
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, May 29 (Itar-Tass) -- Two new earthquakes with the magnitude of 4.5 and 4.8 points on the Richter scale were registered in the Olyutor district of the Koryak autonomous area over the past day. Earth tremors were not felt in settlements. No casualties and destructions sustained, the press center of the Far Eastern regional emergencies center told Itar-Tass on Monday.
The epicentres of the earthquakes were located in the district where the earthquake with the magnitude of 7.9 points on the Richter scale occurred on April 21 destroying buildings and the life-supporting systems in Korf, Tilichiki and Khailino. New earthquakes were registered at 02.12 and 03.57 Moscow time on Sunday. Eighty-eight repeated tremors were registered in Koryakia over the past month. Earthquakes will continue for another year, but will subside gradually, specialists said.
The restoration works are underway in the affected settlements. As many as 166 people and six pieces of machinery, including one aircraft are involved in the restoration works. Rescuers are on duty in the disaster area. They will stay there until October.

Don't panic: an apparent surge in earthquakes and eruptions in the southwestern Pacific is par for the course in Earth's most explosive zone. The 40,000-kilometre Pacific Rim of Fire begins in New Zealand and curls its way northward around the edge of the Pacific Ocean to South America, with about 90 per cent of the world's earthquakes and 75 per cent of known volcanoes on its boundary. Nearly 5000 people were killed in Indonesia after a 6.3-magnitude quake struck near Yogyakarta on Saturday morning.
Volcanic activity has resumed at nearby Mt Merapi. Two powerful quakes – even stronger than that which rocked Yogyakarta – struck within 15 minutes of each other near Papua New Guinea and Tonga on Sunday. In Vanuatu, four volcanoes are being monitored after three began spitting rocks, ash and steam. A magnitude-5.5 quake struck the north Philippines on Sunday night.
But GNS Science geologist Cornel de Ronde said the apparent surge of activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire was "perfectly normal. Geological history tells us that these sorts of events have been going all the time in the past, he said. Ultimately all these recent events are linked by virtue; they are all on the ring of fire but you cannot directly connect them as being triggered by one another, or being a precursor to other events. Dr de Ronde said the Rim of Fire was marked by the boundary between the Pacific Plate and some smaller adjoining tectonic plates.
The Pacific Plate was being slowly shunted under adjoining plates on its western edge, causing earthquakes and chains of volcanic activity. As the plate goes down it gets to a point, about 200 kilometres deep, where it melts into magma. As a consequence we get all these earthquakes and volcanoes popping up.
Dr de Ronde said New Zealand intersected a plate boundary and was part of the explosive chain. Lower Hutt is in the Pacific Plate and Wellington is on the Australian Plate. According to the United States Geological Survey, there have been an average of 19.4 quakes of magnitude 7.0-plus in the rim each year, which means the seismic activity of the past few days is comparatively slight. Earlier this month, a 7.8-magnitude jolt off Tonga sparked a Pacific tsunami warning. In March, Conservation Department worker Mark Kearney was killed when Raoul Island erupted.
Dr de Ronde said it was likely a lot of seismic and volcanic activity went unnoticed in the many chains of deep- sea volcanoes – known as arcs – that skirt the Pacific. New Zealand's volcanoes and earthquakes are monitored by the GNS Science GeoNet division, which is funded by the Earthquake Commission. GNS Science seismologist Mark Chadwick said 40 monitoring stations 100km apart fed nonstop seismic information to laboratories in Wellington. New Zealand's volcanoes were also monitored by GPS, which detected subtle movements, and regular checks on crater temperatures. Though the recent swarm of shakes and volcanic activity in the Rim of Fire was not an indication that disaster was pending, Dr Chadwick said the threat of a powerful quake or an eruption in New Zealand was ever present.
Two moderate earthquakes registered in Koryakia over past day
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, May 29 (Itar-Tass) -- Two new earthquakes with the magnitude of 4.5 and 4.8 points on the Richter scale were registered in the Olyutor district of the Koryak autonomous area over the past day. Earth tremors were not felt in settlements. No casualties and destructions sustained, the press center of the Far Eastern regional emergencies center told Itar-Tass on Monday.
The epicentres of the earthquakes were located in the district where the earthquake with the magnitude of 7.9 points on the Richter scale occurred on April 21 destroying buildings and the life-supporting systems in Korf, Tilichiki and Khailino. New earthquakes were registered at 02.12 and 03.57 Moscow time on Sunday. Eighty-eight repeated tremors were registered in Koryakia over the past month. Earthquakes will continue for another year, but will subside gradually, specialists said.
The restoration works are underway in the affected settlements. As many as 166 people and six pieces of machinery, including one aircraft are involved in the restoration works. Rescuers are on duty in the disaster area. They will stay there until October.

Western nations are not serious about opening their economies to allow the fair trade of goods and services with developing countries, says Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Michael Somare. Market access to developed countries was still restricted by non-tariff barriers such as prohibitive quarantine and legal requirements, he said in his opening address to the African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) and European Union (EU) Council of Ministers' Meeting being held in Port Moresby this week.
Referring to negotiations over a new Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and ACP countries, Somare said the EU's requirement for countries to be World Trade Organisation (WTO) compatible in the new trading arrangement could be costly to some ACP states and undermine their fragile economies.Such a situation would certainly not address the fundamental objective of the ACP-EU partnership arrangement, which is to reduce and eventually eradicate poverty. While the WTO system is proposing greater liberalisation and globalisation through the lifting of trade barriers, it appears that developed countries are not serious in opening up their economies for fair trade of goods and services.
Somare said the new ACP-EU trading arrangement was meant to be developmental in nature, requiring substantial development assistance to enable ACP countries to integrate smoothly into the international trading system.So we are all surprised by the position of the European Union on this important matter and I would, therefore, urge all ACP states to take a firm, united position on this critical issue, ©AAP 2006

A nearly stationary upper-air disturbance and moist low-level flow from the Gulf of Mexico may contribute to another 5 to 8 inches of rainfall in portions of the region by tomorrow morning.
Elsewhere, a few severe thunderstorms are expected today along and in advance of a cold front
pushing eastward through the mid-section of the nation. The area at risk extends from eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin southward into Oklahoma. The greatest threat, however, probably will focus on the upper Mississippi Valley, Iowa, northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri.

China military upgrades a potential threat to US: Pentagon
The pace and scope of China's modernization of its strategic forces and other surprising military developments could pose a credible long term threat to the United States, the Pentagon warned. In an annual report to Congress, the Defense Department said China's ability to sustain military power at a distance is limited but it has the greatest potential of any nation to compete militarily with the United States. Long-term trends in China's strategic nuclear forces modernization, land- and sea-based access denial capabilities, and emerging precision-strike weapons have the potential to pose credible threats to modern militaries operating in the region," the report said.
Several aspects of China's military development have surprised US analysts, including the pace and scope of its strategic forces modernization," an executive summary of the report said. China's military expansion is already such as to alter regional military balances," it added. Long-term trends in China's strategic nuclear forces modernization, land- and sea-based access denial capabilities, and emerging precision-strike weapons have the potential to pose credible threats to modern militaries operating in the region," the report said. The annual China military power report is a closely watched barometer of military relations between the Asian power and the United States, the dominant military power in the Asia Pacific Region.
The report made waves last year by calling attention to big, unacknowledged increases in Chinese spending on a major military buildup that it said put at risk the military balance in the region. The latest report expanded on that theme and said China had still not adequately explained "the purposes or desired end-stats of their military expansion. Absent greater transparency, international reactions to China's military growth will understandably hedge against these unknowns, the report said. In the near term, China's military buildup appeared focused on preparing for contingencies in the Taiwan Strait, including the possibility of US intervention, the report said.
China now has an estimated 710 to 790 short-range missiles opposite Taiwan, according to the report. However, analysis of China's military acquisitions suggest it is also generating capabilities that could apply to other regional contingencies, such as conflicts over resources or territory," it said. It said China has developed a new doctrine for modern warfare, reformed military institutions and personnel systems, improved exercises and training, and acquired advanced foreign and domestic weapons systems. The report discusses China's acquisition of Russian transport and air refueling aircraft and its interest in acquiring the SU-33, a Russian-made maritime strike aircraft capable of operating from aircraft carriers. Carolina Severe thunderstorms and a tornado left behind a massive mess in northern Gaston County.
CHERRYVILLE, N.C. – The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that it was a tornado that ripped up trees and tore down limbs in northern Gaston County on Friday evening.Officials said a low-end tornado with winds estimated at 75 miles per hour caused intermittent damage at 6:19 p.m. during a strong thunderstorm. The storm, which moved between Cherryville and High Shoals, included golf ball-sized hail.The National Weather Service also reported a carport was blown into the top of a tree and twisted pieces of a barn roof flew more than half a mile. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but residents had plenty of debris to clean up.
Jerry Porter uses a chainsaw to cut Bradford pear tree limbs.Took down all my Bradford pears in my front yard and just tore up everything,said Randy Sevarance.None of my trees are salvageable except the two front ones. Jerry Porter said his family lost five Bradford pear trees. I’ve never seen it rain so hard in my life,Porter said. It demolished my trees. His family was even stranded a few dozen feet from home.Right within 10 yards of the house and we couldn’t get any closer because of a tree down across the yard, Porter said. We could see everything happening down here but we couldn’t do anything about it.
Down the street, a Lincoln County man had to chase down seven horses that escaped through a broken fence. Also nearby, a creek’s waters crept up into people’s yards. Neighbors watched, bracing from a distance. I was kind of worried about the trees there for a little bit because it was kind of pushing them toward the house,said Perry Duncan. I didn’t like that too good. Randy Sevarance puts a chain around some tree limbs in order to drag them away. No one seems to like the level of clean up they face this weekend, from torn down poles to scattered leaves.
There’s 5 1/2 acres of property so I’ve got to clean all that up in the back,Sevarance said. He said it will take hours for him to clear away all the bark. God’s way of doing things and there’s nothing you can do to stop it,” he said. Sevarance’s attitude is much like his neighbors, who are mourning their favorite trees. It’s sad to see, unless somebody wants the wood and they’re welcome to it, Porter said. They can come and get it,” he added with a laugh, welcoming any help in cleaning up the mess. This is the second weekend in a row that Gaston County was hit hard by passing storms. Last weekend residents of Dallas were Mother Nature’s target.

The pace and scope of China's modernization of its strategic forces and other surprising military developments could pose a credible long term threat to the United States, the Pentagon warned. In an annual report to Congress, the Defense Department said China's ability to sustain military power at a distance is limited but it has the greatest potential of any nation to compete militarily with the United States. Long-term trends in China's strategic nuclear forces modernization, land- and sea-based access denial capabilities, and emerging precision-strike weapons have the potential to pose credible threats to modern militaries operating in the region," the report said.
Several aspects of China's military development have surprised US analysts, including the pace and scope of its strategic forces modernization," an executive summary of the report said. China's military expansion is already such as to alter regional military balances," it added. Long-term trends in China's strategic nuclear forces modernization, land- and sea-based access denial capabilities, and emerging precision-strike weapons have the potential to pose credible threats to modern militaries operating in the region," the report said. The annual China military power report is a closely watched barometer of military relations between the Asian power and the United States, the dominant military power in the Asia Pacific Region.
The report made waves last year by calling attention to big, unacknowledged increases in Chinese spending on a major military buildup that it said put at risk the military balance in the region. The latest report expanded on that theme and said China had still not adequately explained "the purposes or desired end-stats of their military expansion. Absent greater transparency, international reactions to China's military growth will understandably hedge against these unknowns, the report said. In the near term, China's military buildup appeared focused on preparing for contingencies in the Taiwan Strait, including the possibility of US intervention, the report said.
China now has an estimated 710 to 790 short-range missiles opposite Taiwan, according to the report. However, analysis of China's military acquisitions suggest it is also generating capabilities that could apply to other regional contingencies, such as conflicts over resources or territory," it said. It said China has developed a new doctrine for modern warfare, reformed military institutions and personnel systems, improved exercises and training, and acquired advanced foreign and domestic weapons systems. The report discusses China's acquisition of Russian transport and air refueling aircraft and its interest in acquiring the SU-33, a Russian-made maritime strike aircraft capable of operating from aircraft carriers. Carolina Severe thunderstorms and a tornado left behind a massive mess in northern Gaston County.
CHERRYVILLE, N.C. – The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that it was a tornado that ripped up trees and tore down limbs in northern Gaston County on Friday evening.Officials said a low-end tornado with winds estimated at 75 miles per hour caused intermittent damage at 6:19 p.m. during a strong thunderstorm. The storm, which moved between Cherryville and High Shoals, included golf ball-sized hail.The National Weather Service also reported a carport was blown into the top of a tree and twisted pieces of a barn roof flew more than half a mile. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but residents had plenty of debris to clean up.

Jerry Porter said his family lost five Bradford pear trees. I’ve never seen it rain so hard in my life,Porter said. It demolished my trees. His family was even stranded a few dozen feet from home.Right within 10 yards of the house and we couldn’t get any closer because of a tree down across the yard, Porter said. We could see everything happening down here but we couldn’t do anything about it.
Down the street, a Lincoln County man had to chase down seven horses that escaped through a broken fence. Also nearby, a creek’s waters crept up into people’s yards. Neighbors watched, bracing from a distance. I was kind of worried about the trees there for a little bit because it was kind of pushing them toward the house,said Perry Duncan. I didn’t like that too good. Randy Sevarance puts a chain around some tree limbs in order to drag them away. No one seems to like the level of clean up they face this weekend, from torn down poles to scattered leaves.
There’s 5 1/2 acres of property so I’ve got to clean all that up in the back,Sevarance said. He said it will take hours for him to clear away all the bark. God’s way of doing things and there’s nothing you can do to stop it,” he said. Sevarance’s attitude is much like his neighbors, who are mourning their favorite trees. It’s sad to see, unless somebody wants the wood and they’re welcome to it, Porter said. They can come and get it,” he added with a laugh, welcoming any help in cleaning up the mess. This is the second weekend in a row that Gaston County was hit hard by passing storms. Last weekend residents of Dallas were Mother Nature’s target.

What images come to mind when you think of "end times prophecies"?…Most people, if they were honest, would admit that their view of the end times is a frightening one.…They imagine an angry and vengeful God hovering high above it all, bent on destruction and raining terror on all who have rejected him.
Have we missed something? In many ways I think we have. God didn't reveal these graphic images of the coming judgment to express his wrath or even to frighten us into believing. He revealed them to show us his wonderful grace and mercy in the midst of our sin and un worthiness. The story isn't about pending gloom and doom, but it's about a loving Father who will do anything he can to help people escape the consequences of evil.
Bible prophecy isn't intended to frighten us, but it's to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is real and omnipotent and active in our lives; to warn us of the very real danger lying ahead for those who reject his love and mercy; and to encourage us to accept his gracious and free offer of salvation through his Son, Jesus.
In his first letter to Timothy, Paul tells us that God "wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth" (2:4).…Time and again in Scripture we are told that God longs for his people to be with him in heaven. The Bible is not a story of wrath and judgment but of
unconditional love and redemption. God longs to be with us and wants desperately for us to accept his hand of salvation. What we do is up to us.

MEXICO CITY - Aletta, the first tropical storm of the eastern Pacific season, was moving slowly north on Sunday, about 105 miles southwest of the Mexican resort of Acapulco. Aletta's winds remained at about 45 mph at it moved at 2 mph, and while forecasters said it could still move closer to land, they predicted it would turn to the west by Tuesday and start heading out to sea.
Tropical Storm Aletta was expected to bring some heavy rain to Mexico's Pacific coast. Mexico issued a tropical storm warning for a 240-mile stretch of coast from Punta Maldonado, east of Acapulco, to Zihuatanejo to the west, and discontinued storm watches further east, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

BANTUL, Indonesia, Monday, May 29 — Sugiarto, a 50-year-old chicken farmer, spent Sunday night lying immobile with a severe back injury at the edge of a crowded tarp outside Bantul General Hospital, his wife shielding his face as rain whipped down. In Bantul, villagers mourned on Saturday and prepared mass graves for victims of a powerful early morning earthquake that leveled buildings. Mr. Sugiarto said his back was broken when the roof of his house fell on him in the 6.3 magnitude earthquake on Saturday.
He was first turned away from the hospital because his injuries were not considered serious enough amid the devastation in Bantul, a district eight miles south of Yogyakarta where most of the deaths occurred.We returned to our mosque, where we sat out front and prayed, said his wife, Ngatinah, 43. We prayed all night in the rain. Neighbors drove them in a pickup truck. Like most people here, they refuse to stay inside, terrified of the aftershocks that come every few hours.Mr. Sugiarto, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, was back at the hospital awaiting treatment for a second day in a row. He lay on nothing more than a plastic sheet next to the hospital parking lot.
The earthquake has killed more than 4,500 people, the Indonesian government said Sunday. The number of deaths is expected to rise as rescue workers search the rubble of collapsed buildings, and aftershocks continue to quiver through Yogyakarta and surrounding areas.
Mount Merapi, a volcano north of Yogyakarta, has been expected to erupt for the past few weeks, and it seemed to become more threatening on Monday morning, venting ever larger clouds of hot gas into the air, that then slid down its slopes. Volcanologists say the earthquake probably caused the increased activity in the volcano. The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck just before 6 a.m. on Saturday, was about 15 miles southwest of Yogyakarta on the southern coast of Java along the Indian Ocean, and about 6 miles below the surface. John Budd, a Unicef spokesman, said tens of thousands had been injured and at least 100,000 left
homeless, nearly half of them children.The issue of how efficiently help is coming to the quake's victims was raised Sunday, but aid workers here were quick to note that there was no comparison to be made between the relatively modest earthquake on Saturday and far more devastating quakes in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir last October, which killed 75,000, and in Iran in 2003, which killed 31,000, let alone the tsunami, which killed 181,000 people in Southeast Asia in 2004.
Two other earthquakes east of Indonesia were recorded Sunday, one off the coast of Papua New Guinea, and another near Tonga. No deaths or damages were reported.In Bantul, overwhelmed hospital employees working in blood-stained hallways teeming with sick and injured patients welcomed the arrival of emergency supplies Sunday night, though United Nations officials said they expected most of the aid to arrive Monday.Relief efforts have been stalled partly because the Yogyakarta airport is closed, after its runway was cracked and a terminal building partly collapsed. The next 36 hours are going to be a logistical nightmare, he said. "We have a small pipeline where a lot of aid is being pumped through. We are going to face a bottleneck if we don't figure this out soon.Mr. Pujiono said a meeting was planned among aid groups and the Indonesian government to help coordinate rescue efforts.Other aid officials said the Indonesian government had so far responded efficiently to the earthquake.
The response from the government has been electric and focused," said Mr. Budd of Unicef, who was to meet with the Indonesian finance minister and other United Nations agencies on Monday to assess the extent of the damage in Yogyakarta. "They assessed what was required and responded quickly. At Bantul General Hospital, where pieces of the roof were missing and walls were fissured, Mercy Corps, a disaster relief group, was distributing supplies and assessing patients' needs. Liha, a spokeswoman for Mercy Corps who goes by one name, said relief needed to come faster because the hospital was rapidly running out of antibiotics, anesthetics, bandages and, most urgently, food. Most people are suffering from bone fractures, but what we really need is food supplies, she said, standing amid a crowd of bloodied people clamoring for help.
Most of these people haven't eaten since the earthquake. In Jetis, an area in Bantul, more than 300 houses were leveled. Neighbors climbing over a wrecked house spotted the bodies of a
family of three and began frantically digging them out Sunday morning. But no amount of effort could free the bodies from the layers of debris. Hours later, the neighbors were still waiting for military personnel to help. The bodies remained buried and were not part of the official death toll until well into the evening Sunday. In sweltering heat, residents of Jetis carried all the belongings they could salvage to a central location Sunday afternoon, where they divided them among the neediest.I am devastated, said Prapto Warsito, the village leader for Jetis, who sat at the side of the road surrounded by rubble, holding a cardboard box for donations.

Just a few hours later, we were treated to an a early wake-up call when another earthquake rippled across the region at 4.23am - measuring 3.9 on the Richter Scale. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, Wellington, received 13 reports from people around Hastings and Napier via its Geonet website link, where people can send an e-mail on their experiences with earthquakes.
Seismologist, Dr Ken Gledhill, said the first earthquake was centred 12km under Napier and the second, 20 kilometres south east of Havelock North. Both were felt throughout the Hastings and Napier regions. Dr Gledhill said neither this morning's shake - or the tremor reportedly felt in Onekawa at 10.34pm yesterday - were big enough to be picked up by any of the major seismic stations or strong motion stations placed inside buildings to measure the shaking effect of earthquakes. But information gathered from various earthquake measuring instruments from around the North Island, plus reports from the public, helped provide data on the earthquakes.
Dr Gledhill said it was not unusual for the Hawke's Bay region to record two or three earthquakes a month. In the bigger scheme of things, it was a minor earthquake," he said. It was just below the threshold ... where our duty person would have been notified," he said. This morning's earthquake follows three others recorded in the Hawke's Bay region since April. An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter Scale was felt 10km south east of Otane, on May 20, at 3.23pm. Another was recorded on April 27, south east of Dannevirke, measuring 3.5 and an earthquake measuring 3.8 was centred 10km south east of Waipawa on April 18.

BANTUL, Indonesia, Monday, May 29 — Sugiarto, a 50-year-old chicken farmer, spent Sunday night lying immobile with a severe back injury at the edge of a crowded tarp outside Bantul General Hospital, his wife shielding his face as rain whipped down. In Bantul, villagers mourned on Saturday and prepared mass graves for victims of a powerful early morning earthquake that leveled buildings. Mr. Sugiarto said his back was broken when the roof of his house fell on him in the 6.3 magnitude earthquake on Saturday.
He was first turned away from the hospital because his injuries were not considered serious enough amid the devastation in Bantul, a district eight miles south of Yogyakarta where most of the deaths occurred.We returned to our mosque, where we sat out front and prayed, said his wife, Ngatinah, 43. We prayed all night in the rain. Neighbors drove them in a pickup truck. Like most people here, they refuse to stay inside, terrified of the aftershocks that come every few hours.Mr. Sugiarto, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, was back at the hospital awaiting treatment for a second day in a row. He lay on nothing more than a plastic sheet next to the hospital parking lot.
The earthquake has killed more than 4,500 people, the Indonesian government said Sunday. The number of deaths is expected to rise as rescue workers search the rubble of collapsed buildings, and aftershocks continue to quiver through Yogyakarta and surrounding areas.
Mount Merapi, a volcano north of Yogyakarta, has been expected to erupt for the past few weeks, and it seemed to become more threatening on Monday morning, venting ever larger clouds of hot gas into the air, that then slid down its slopes. Volcanologists say the earthquake probably caused the increased activity in the volcano. The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck just before 6 a.m. on Saturday, was about 15 miles southwest of Yogyakarta on the southern coast of Java along the Indian Ocean, and about 6 miles below the surface. John Budd, a Unicef spokesman, said tens of thousands had been injured and at least 100,000 left
homeless, nearly half of them children.The issue of how efficiently help is coming to the quake's victims was raised Sunday, but aid workers here were quick to note that there was no comparison to be made between the relatively modest earthquake on Saturday and far more devastating quakes in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir last October, which killed 75,000, and in Iran in 2003, which killed 31,000, let alone the tsunami, which killed 181,000 people in Southeast Asia in 2004.
Two other earthquakes east of Indonesia were recorded Sunday, one off the coast of Papua New Guinea, and another near Tonga. No deaths or damages were reported.In Bantul, overwhelmed hospital employees working in blood-stained hallways teeming with sick and injured patients welcomed the arrival of emergency supplies Sunday night, though United Nations officials said they expected most of the aid to arrive Monday.Relief efforts have been stalled partly because the Yogyakarta airport is closed, after its runway was cracked and a terminal building partly collapsed. The next 36 hours are going to be a logistical nightmare, he said. "We have a small pipeline where a lot of aid is being pumped through. We are going to face a bottleneck if we don't figure this out soon.Mr. Pujiono said a meeting was planned among aid groups and the Indonesian government to help coordinate rescue efforts.Other aid officials said the Indonesian government had so far responded efficiently to the earthquake.
The response from the government has been electric and focused," said Mr. Budd of Unicef, who was to meet with the Indonesian finance minister and other United Nations agencies on Monday to assess the extent of the damage in Yogyakarta. "They assessed what was required and responded quickly. At Bantul General Hospital, where pieces of the roof were missing and walls were fissured, Mercy Corps, a disaster relief group, was distributing supplies and assessing patients' needs. Liha, a spokeswoman for Mercy Corps who goes by one name, said relief needed to come faster because the hospital was rapidly running out of antibiotics, anesthetics, bandages and, most urgently, food. Most people are suffering from bone fractures, but what we really need is food supplies, she said, standing amid a crowd of bloodied people clamoring for help.
Most of these people haven't eaten since the earthquake. In Jetis, an area in Bantul, more than 300 houses were leveled. Neighbors climbing over a wrecked house spotted the bodies of a
family of three and began frantically digging them out Sunday morning. But no amount of effort could free the bodies from the layers of debris. Hours later, the neighbors were still waiting for military personnel to help. The bodies remained buried and were not part of the official death toll until well into the evening Sunday. In sweltering heat, residents of Jetis carried all the belongings they could salvage to a central location Sunday afternoon, where they divided them among the neediest.I am devastated, said Prapto Warsito, the village leader for Jetis, who sat at the side of the road surrounded by rubble, holding a cardboard box for donations.
