UN watchdog: Iran storing 12 times more enriched uranium than nuke deal allows-IAEA says Tehran has added over 300 kilograms of low-enriched uranium since late August, is also enriching at greater purity than permitted under 2015 pact-By AGENCIES-nov 11,20-Today, 7:32

Iran continues to increase its stockpile of low-enriched uranium far beyond the limits set in a landmark nuclear deal with world powers and to enrich it to a greater purity than permitted, the UN’s atomic watchdog agency said Wednesday. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported in a confidential document distributed to member countries and seen by The Associated Press that Iran as of November 2 had a stockpile of 2,442.9 kilograms (5385.7 pounds) of low-enriched uranium, up from 2,105.4 kilograms (4,641.6 pounds) reported on August 25.The nuclear deal signed in 2015 with the United States, Germany, France, Britain, China and Russia, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, allows Iran only to keep a stockpile of 202.8 kilograms (447 pounds). The IAEA reported that Iran has also been continuing to enrich uranium to a purity of up to 4.5%, higher than the 3.67% allowed under the deal.Wednesday’s report confirmed that, in line with previous statements by Iranian officials, centrifuges had been installed at an underground part of the Natanz nuclear facility after another part of the site was damaged in an explosion in July which Iran blamed on “sabotage.”Iran has openly announced all violations of the nuclear deal in advance, which have followed the decision by the US to pull out unilaterally in 2018.The deal promises Iran economic incentives in exchange for the curbs on its nuclear program. Since the US withdrawal and imposition of new sanctions, Tehran has been putting pressure on the remaining parties with the violations to come up with new ways to offset the economy-crippling actions by Washington. At the same time, the Iranian government has continued to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors full access to its nuclear facilities, a key reason the countries that remain parties to the JCPOA say it’s worth preserving. The goal of the agreement is to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, something the country insists it does not intend to do.A widely cited analysis by the Washington-based Arms Control Association suggests that Iran now has more than double the material it would need to make a nuclear weapon. However, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told The Associated Press in an interview last month that his agency does not share that assessment. Before agreeing to the nuclear deal, Iran enriched its uranium up to 20% purity, which is a short technical step away from the weapons-grade level of 90%. In 2013, Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium was already more than 7,000 kilograms (7.72 tons) with higher enrichment, but it didn’t pursue a bomb.In the quarterly report distributed to members on Wednesday, the IAEA said it still has questions from the discovery last year of particles of uranium of man-made origin at a site outside Tehran not declared by Iran. The United States and Israel had been pressing the IAEA for some time to look into the Turquzabad facility, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described to the UN in 2018 as a “secret atomic warehouse.”In the current report, the IAEA said the “compositions of these isotopically altered particles” found there were “similar to particles found in Iran in the past, originating from imported centrifuge components.” It said it found Iran’s response to questions last month “unsatisfactory.”“Following an assessment of this new information, the agency informed Iran that it continues to consider Iran’s response to be not technically credible,” the IAEA wrote this week. “A full and prompt explanation from Iran…is needed.”

UN rejects Iran’s explanations for nuclear material at site flagged by Israel-Atomic watchdog says Islamic Republic’s explanations are ‘not credible,’ demands answers on activity at Tehran warehouse dating back to early 2000-By AFP and TOI STAFF-Today, 8:22 pm

The UN’s nuclear watchdog said Wednesday that Iran’s explanations over the presence of nuclear material at an undeclared site in the country were “not credible.”Despite Iranian authorities providing some information about the site, “the agency informed Iran that it continues to consider Iran’s response to be not technically credible,” the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a report seen by AFP.“A full and prompt explanation from Iran regarding the presence of uranium particles of anthropogenic origin… at a location in Iran not declared to the Agency, is needed,” the report said. While the IAEA has not identified the site in question, diplomatic sources have indicated to AFP that it is in the Turquzabad district of Tehran, previously identified by Israel as an alleged site of secret atomic activity. The report did not provide any new information about two other locations where the IAEA took samples in September and where undeclared nuclear activity may have taken place in the early 2000s.The analysis of those samples is ongoing.Iran initially refused to allow inspectors access to the sites, sparking a standoff with the IAEA only resolved in late August during a visit to Tehran by IAEA director Rafael Grossi.Benjamin Netanyahu addresses the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2018, in New York City, and holds up a picture of what he said was a secret Iranian nuclear warehouse. (John Moore/Getty Images/AFP)-In a speech in 2018 at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed the existence of the warehouse in Tehran, which he said held “massive amounts” of equipment and material that were part of a secret Iranian nuclear program. In that speech, Netanyahu claimed some 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of radioactive material had been recently removed from the atomic warehouse and squirreled away around Tehran, endangering the capital’s residents. The site may have contained as much as 300 tons of nuclear-related equipment and material in 15 shipping containers, Netanyahu added. He did not specify what nuclear material was contained at the site.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showcases material he says was obtained by Israeli intelligence from Iran’s nuclear weapons archive, in Tel Aviv on April 30, 2018. (Amos Ben-Gershom (GPO)-That speech came months after Israel’s disclosure that it had spirited away what it said was a “half-ton” of Iranian nuclear documents from Tehran, with Netanyahu saying both the archive and the warehouse were proof that Iran continues to seek atomic weapons despite the 2015 nuclear deal. “Iran has not abandoned its goal to develop nuclear weapons…. Rest assured that will not happen. What Iran hides, Israel will find,” Netanyahu told the UN.Iran has denied that the site was a nuclear facility or served any secretive purpose. In an initial response to Netanyahu’s UN speech, Iranian state media claimed the warehouse was actually a recycling facility for scrap metal. The report did confirm that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium is now more than 12 times the limit set down in a 2015 deal with world powers. It said that as of November 2, “Iran’s total enriched uranium stockpile… was 2,442.9 kg.”The limit in the 2015 deal was set at 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of enriched uranium in a particular compound form, which is the equivalent of 202.8 kilograms of non-compound enriched uranium.Wednesday’s report confirmed that, in line with previous statements by Iranian officials, centrifuges had been installed at an underground part of the Natanz nuclear facility after another part of the site was damaged in an explosion in July which Iran blamed on “sabotage.”

Poll: More Saudis think Israel, rather than Iran, is region’s biggest threat-Survey also finds half of Bahrainis and third of Emiratis don’t think Jewish State has right to exist, suggesting Israelis’ affinity for Gulf states is not entirely reciprocated-By RAPHAEL AHREN -nov 11,20-Today, 8:31 pm  0

Saudis consider Israel, not Iran, the greatest threat to regional security, according to an opinion poll out of Jerusalem released Wednesday. The poll, which surveyed hundreds of people throughout the Gulf as well as in Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Morocco, the US and Germany, also showed recent normalization deals with Israel receiving a chilly reception, underlining gaps between the stances of authoritarian regimes in moderate Sunni states and their populaces.Asked which country threatens the stability of the Middle East the most, 33 percent of Saudis chose Israel, compared to 25% who chose Iran.In Bahrain, a majority Shiite country ruled by a Sunni elite which recently agreed to normalize ties with Israel, 24% chose Israel, compared to 18% who pointed to Iran.Respondents in Qatar, Morocco and the PA also flagged Israel as the greatest threat. Moroccans said Turkey was the second-largest threat to the Middle East, ranking Iran only third.Only Israelis (45%) and residents of the United Arab Emirates (27%) chose Iran as the main threat, though 17% of Emirati respondents still chose Israel. Both the US and Germany saw the US as the main instigator of instability in the Mideast, placing Iran second. The findings appear to contradict the view of virtually all Middle East analysts, who say that Sunni Arab states are getting closer to Israel, which they see as a strong ally in the joint fight against Shiite Iran.“Everyone in Israel thinks everyone in the Arab world considers Iran a huge threat, but I can tell you that not even Israelis are convinced Iran’s such a threat,” said Jerusalem-based pollster Mitchell Barak, who conducted the survey on behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation said. The survey also showed that Iran is not perceived as constituting as big a regional threat as is often assumed. Asked to rank the Iranian threat from 1 (very low) to 10 (very high), Israeli respondents on average responded by 7.4. The number was significantly lower in Bahrain (3.8), Qatar (4.3), Morocco (5.3) the UAE (6) and Saudi Arabia (6.8).“Iran is really not considered such a great threat,” Barak said. The poll, which had a margin of error of 4-5% depending on the country, surveyed between 300 and 600 respondents in each place, though only 267 from Qatar were included. The data for the poll was collected via ads placed in cell phone apps in nine different countries. In some Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain, public opinion is tightly controlled by the respective regimes, and some pollsters say gauging actual public opinion in many Gulf countries is difficult. In Bahrain, for instance, Barak’s company, Keevoon, had to make greats efforts to locate enough respondents to allow for a representative sample, including offering compensation. While online polls are generally considered less reliable than telephone or face-to-face surveys, the results generally dovetailed with previous surveys that also showed lower levels of support for normalization with Israel than telegraphed by slick official campaigns promoting the deals.Only 46% of respondents from the UAE and 31% from Bahrain said they have favorable impressions of Israel. Forty-three percent and 48% had unfavorable impressions, respectively.“Israelis like Emiratis and Bahrainis much more than they like us,” Barak said. “On Israeli social media channels I see what amounts to an Israeli-Gulf lovefest. But they don’t like us as much as we do.”Two-thirds of Israeli respondents had a good feeling about the UAE. One in two Israelis has a favorable view of Bahrain.Manama and Abu Dhabi recently signed normalization agreements, known as the Abraham Accords, and established formal diplomatic ties with Jerusalem, after decades in which they refused to recognize the Jewish state despite clandestine security cooperation.According to the survey, 86% of Israelis (and 72% of Israeli Arabs) support these agreements. By contrast, 69% of Emiratis and 46% of Bahrainis were in favor of the deals their respective governments made with Israel. The US administration brokered these deals and officials in Washington say a number of Arab states are keen to normalize relations with Israel as well. Some 52% of Qataris, 35% of Saudis and 17% of Moroccans expressed support for the Abraham Accords.Other Arab countries have an even worse view of the Jewish state, the poll found: Only 16% of Moroccans, 23% of Saudis and 28% of Qataris had a favorable view of Israel (70%, 65% and 59%, respectively, had an unfavorable view). The survey found 52% of Israeli respondents have warm feelings for Morocco. Forty-five percent of respondents said they view Qatar and Saudi Arabia favorably. The survey also showed there was only “lukewarm support” for Israel’s right to exist, Barak said.US President Donald Trump, center, with from left, Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, during the Abraham Accords signing ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, September 15, 2020, in Washington. (Alex Brandon/AP)-For instance, one in two Bahrainis and a third of respondents from the UAE disagreed with the assertion that Israel has a right to exist. The numbers were even higher in Saudi Arabia (62%), Qatar (57%) and Morocco (56%).The survey is the latest in a series of recent polls suggesting widespread disapproval of normalization in the UAE and Bahrain. A 2017 poll by the Washington Institute found that only around 15% of both Sunnis and Shiites in Bahrain supported diplomatic overtures to the Jewish state. In July 2020, just two months before normalization with Israel, a subsequent survey by the think tank found that 80% of Emiratis disagreed with the statement that “people who want to have business or sports contacts with Israelis should be allowed to do so.”Another survey from the Doha Institute’s recent Arab Opinion Index also indicated that many ordinary people in Arab states often disagree with their governments regarding Israel.“However, everyone likes the Palestinians,” Barak said during a Zoom presentation of his findings. Nearly three-quarters of Emiratis, Bahrainis and Saudis, and a whopping 80% of Qataris, have a favorable view of the Palestinian Authority. The survey, which was conducted in late October and early November, also attests to abiding support for Palestinian statehood in the Arab world, as 90% of Moroccans, 85% of Qataris, 81% of Emiratis and 72% of Bahrainis said they were in favor of the establishment of a Palestinian state.By contrast, only about a third of Israeli and 45% of American respondents backed the idea of a Palestinian state.

Navy takes helm of first new warship from Germany to guard gas rigs-INS Magen, first of four Sa’ar 6 corvettes, to sail to Israel where it will be outfitted with sensors, weapons, anti-missile batteries in coming months before deployment-By JUDAH ARI GROSS-nov 11,20-Today, 11:30 pm  0

The Israeli Navy on Wednesday received the first of four new Sa’ar 6-class corvettes from Germany — its first new missile ships in over a quarter-century — which will be used to defend Israel’s natural gas rigs and shipping routes. The ship, the INS Magen, will reach Israeli shores next month where it will be outfitted with sensors, weapons and communication systems, before being declared operational.“The INS Magen, the first of four new Magen-series ships for the Israeli fleet, will answer in the best way possible the future challenges on the naval front,” Israeli Navy commander Maj. Gen. Eli Sharvit said at the official hand-over ceremony in Germany.“The INS Magen will be armed with the best offensive and defensive systems, with fighting systems that are at the forefront of international military technology, the vast majority of which are products of Israeli industries,” Sharvit said.Commander of the Israeli Navy Maj. Gen. Eli Sharvit, right, salutes during a ceremony marking the hand-over of the Sa’ar 6-class corvette INS Magen to the Israeli Navy from Germany on November 11, 2020. (Israel Defense Forces)-The remaining three ships will be delivered to Israel over the next year. The Sa’ar 6-class vessels are being constructed by Germany’s Thyssenkrupp manufacturing conglomerate in the port of Kiel. The INS Magen was originally planned to be handed over to the Israeli Navy earlier this year, but this was delayed due to production issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The ceremony was presided over by Sharvit and the deputy director-general of the Defense Ministry, Avi Dadon, as well as a number of other senior defense officials, the military said. The INS Magen was the first new missile ship received by the Israeli Navy-in 26 years, since the Sa’ar 5-class INS Hanit was delivered in 1994.Israeli sailors on board the Sa’ar 6-class corvette INS Magen salute as the vessel is handed over to the Israeli Navy in a ceremony in Germany on November 11, 2020. (Israel Defense Forces)-The four Sa’ar 6 ships were ordered after the government tasked the navy with defending rigs built over natural gas deposits in Israel’s territorial waters. Each nearly 2,000-ton missile ship is equipped with two Iron Dome interceptor launchers — known as the Naval Dome — to intercept rockets and a Barak-8 battery to shoot down cruise and ballistic missiles. The ships are also covered in some 260 static radar arrays — known as a phased array — that allow them to detect incoming projectiles and aircraft in the sky, as well as ships and low-flying cruise missiles at sea level. In the past, a ship would have needed two separate radar systems, one to detect objects at sea level and one to scan the skies. That the 260 or so arrays stay in place also means that the ship is less easily detectable than vessels with radar systems that rotate. The Sa’ar 6 is large compared to the country’s existing vessels, but Navy officials say it is far smaller than the types of ships that perform the types of missions it is being tasked with. And though it has a helicopter landing pad on its back, is larger than the Israeli Navy’s other two classes of corvettes, the Sa’ar 5 and Sa’ar 4.5, it shows up as far smaller on radar, thanks to advancements in stealth technology in recent decades.Unlike its predecessors, the Sa’ar 6 is also specifically built to house both male and female sailors. The navy anticipates that roughly a quarter of the crew of the missile ships will be women. The navy sees the protection of the natural gas rigs as one of its highest priorities, believing that a direct strike on an operating extraction platform would be catastrophic. Defending Israel’s shipping lanes in the Mediterranean Sea, which are used to import over 90 percent of the country’s goods, are also seen as a major task. The Lebanese Hezbollah terror group has in fact identified Israel’s national gas rigs as a potential target, releasing a video in 2018 showing the Leviathan platform in gunsights and threatening to destroy them “within hours.”The threat from Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which fired a rocket toward Israel’s Tamar gas extraction platform in the 2014 Gaza war, is considered to be far less. The terror group is not believed to have advanced munitions capable of accurately striking a platform at sea. According to Israeli Navy calculations, Hamas would have to fire roughly 10,000 simple, unguided rockets at a gas rig to ensure one successful strike, making such an attack not technically impossible, but highly unlikely. The decision to purchase the Sa’ar 6 ships from the German industrial firm Thyssenkrupp, along with another deal with the company to buy submarines, is part of a graft investigation in Israel involving several leading Israeli businessmen, including close contacts of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as a former commander of the navy, Eli Marom.Netanyahu, who has been indicted on three other corruption charges, was not named as a suspect in that scandal — dubbed Case 3000 — and no current Israeli Navy officials have been connected to it either. The Israeli Navy refused to comment on the specific manner in which the tender was issued to Thyssenkrupp or other matters related to the purchasing process, but maintains that the Sa’ar 6 itself was a necessary ship to buy and that decisions over its specifications were made solely out of operational considerations.

International lawmakers to push social media giants on online anti-Semitism-Bipartisan task force of lawmakers from US, Israel, Australia, Canada and UK hear recommendations for actions they can take to address issue, hold big tech accountable
By JACOB MAGID 12 November 2020, 1:59 am

NEW YORK — An inter-parliamentary task force convened its first meeting Tuesday, with lawmakers hearing recommendations from panelists for how they can combat online anti-Semitism.The group included members from across party lines in national legislatures from the United States, Australia, Canada, Israel, and the United Kingdom. The meeting, on Zoom, opened with presentations from representatives of the American Jewish Committee, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs in Canada, B’nai Brith Canada, Canadian Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and the Online Hate Prevention Institute in Australia.Several panelists and lawmakers encouraged the task force to push social media companies like Facebook and Twitter to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. The classification includes demonization of Israel alongside more traditional forms of anti-Semitism, which critics say limits free speech.During her presentation, AJC’s Holly Huffnagle recommended that the task force ask platforms to be transparent in the drafting of policies, algorithms and moderation systems, and that they abide by a set of core principals that will earn the public’s trust. She called for the formation of an inter-parliamentary system to gather and share new data quickly and for the recruiting of experts to advise the task force so that it will be equipped to recommend technical changes from social media giants.Huffnagle also urged the task force to expand its focus to non-mainstream social media platforms, arguing that much of the online anti-Semitism is taking place on fringe sites such as 8kun (previously 8chan) and other platforms based outside the US and other major countries.Twice during the meeting, Canadian MP Anthony Housefather read out anti-Semitic and anti-Israel tweets from Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and lamenting Twitter’s refusal to flag or remove the posts as the site has done with tweets from US President Donald Trump.4. The Zionist regime is a deadly, cancerous growth and a detriment to this region. It will undoubtedly be uprooted and destroyed. Then, the shame will fall on those who put their facilities at the service of normalization of relations with this regime. — Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) May 22, 2020“Amid this global pandemic, when more people are online, the urgency to act is even greater. We must expose online anti-Semitism and racism that goes unaddressed or inadequately addressed on social media platforms, especially as disinformation continues to rise,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz from Florida said during the meeting. The task force was announced in September and includes Wasserman Schultz, fellow Florida Democrat Ted Deutch, along with Chris Smith and Mario Diaz-Balart from the Republican party. From outside the US, Blue and White MK Michal Cotler-Wunsh represents Israel, MPs Anthony Housefather and Marty Mortantz represent Canada, MPs Josh Burns and Dave Sharma represent Australia and MPs Andrew Percy and Alex Sobel represent the United Kingdom. The group is set to convene again at the end of November.

IDF on alert for attack on 1st anniversary of killing Islamic Jihad leader-Military deploys additional Iron Dome batteries to south, flights diverted away from Gaza amid concerns Palestinian terror group may attack-By JUDAH ARI GROSS -NOV 11,20-Today, 2:58 pm

The Israel Defense Forces went on heightened alert Wednesday, sending additional air defenses to southern Israel, ahead of the one-year anniversary of the killing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata, out of concerns the terror group may mark the occasion with an attack. In addition to more Iron Dome missile defense batteries deployed to the south, flights into and out of Israel appeared to have been directed to use Ben Gurion International Airport’s northern paths, keeping them farther from the Gaza Strip. These changes in air traffic routes — visible with civilian flight path tracking software — is generally seen when there is active fighting or expectations of it. A spokesperson for the Israel Airports Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter. The precautionary moves came a day before the anniversary of Abu al-Ata’s death on November 12, 2019, which sparked a fierce round of fighting known in the military as Operation Black Belt. This week also marks the anniversary of an IDF intelligence operation that went awry on November 11, 2018, leading to a large exchange of fire between Israel and terror groups in the Strip, as well as a major, week-long campaign against Hamas in November 2012, known as Operation Protective Edge.Abu al-Ata was a prominent member of the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, the commander of the Al-Quds Brigades’ units in the northern Gaza Strip, who the IDF believed was personally responsible for many attacks against Israel in the months before he was killed. He was killed, along with his wife, in a precision strike on the apartment in which he was staying in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood, following months of preparation by the military.Palestinian terror groups have been known to carry out attacks on the anniversaries of such conflicts.Though Israel is involved in ongoing talks with the Hamas terror group regarding a long-term ceasefire agreement, recent weeks have seen an uptick in violence emanating from Gaza.Last week, a drone was flown from the Strip into Israeli airspace before it was brought down by the Israeli military. The week before saw a rocket attack from the Strip, aimed at the Israeli city of Ashkelon. One projectile was intercepted, the other landed in an open field.Last month, the IDF also uncovered what it said was a Hamas attack tunnel dug from Gaza into Israel.Israel has fought three large campaigns against terror groups in the Strip since Hamas took control of the area in 2007, along with dozens of smaller exchanges of fire.

Tropical Storm Eta targets Florida west coast as it nears fourth landfall-By Gabriella Borter-NOV 11,20

(Reuters) - Tropical Storm Eta spun toward Florida’s west coast on Wednesday on its erratic path to a fourth landfall, threatening squall winds, storm surge and prompting the state’s governor to declare a state of emergency in 13 counties.Tropical Storm Eta targets Florida west coast-Eta, which had weakened slightly from hurricane strength to become a tropical storm, is the 28th named storm of the busiest Atlantic hurricane season on record, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. Its fourth landfall was projected early on Thursday, north of Tampa Bay, after it already slammed Central America, Cuba and the upper Florida Keys.It had dropped nearly 18 inches of rain over parts of South Florida by Monday, moved southwest and then stalled over the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday before making a northward turn. It was last moving on a northward trajectory at 12 miles per hour (19 kph). The storm was about 85 miles (135 km) southwest of Tampa, with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour (110 kph)on Wednesday, the NHC said. The west coast of Florida faces “the multiple threats of a landfalling hurricane or tropical storm,” said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, listing the heavy rainfall, storm surge and possible tornadoes in the forecast.“One is of course the wind, which could be at the very least gusting to hurricane force, and sustained tropical storm force winds. That’s enough to do some damage,” Feltgen said.“Even though it looks relatively calm out here, the weather can change in an instant,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said at a press briefing. “Remain vigilant.”She added there were no reports of flooding or street closures as of Wednesday afternoon and she believed the city could withstand the projected storm surge “safely.”Eta’s surge was expected to affect southern and western Florida and the Florida Keys into Thursday. The state’s west coast was under a storm surge warning from the Suwanee River to Bonita Beach, including Tampa Bay, where the water could rise up to five feet.Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 13 counties in Eta’s path and requested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also declare a pre-landfall state of emergency for those counties to mobilize resources.Parts of Broward County, on Florida’s east coast, were still severely flooded, with lakes overflowing and residential streets submerged. Rainfall totals from Eta could add up to 20 inches in some parts of South Florida, the NHC said.Reporting by Gabriella Borter; Editing by Bernadette Baum, Steve Orlofsky and David Gregorio.

Israelis flock to airport ahead of planned shutdown of flights-Some 5,000 leave the country Wednesday; airlines said refusing to reimburse passengers whose tickets will become unusable by fresh restrictions-By TOI staff-SEP 24,20-Today, 9:48 pM

As Israel headed into a planned transition into a full coronavirus lockdown that would nearly shutter the entire nation, thousands of travelers passed through Ben Gurion Airport Thursday on what were perhaps some of the last tickets out of the country before the airfield is largely closed down again. Some 5,000 people were scheduled to take flights out over the course of the day, Hebrew media reported. There were 12 flights to Greece and another nine flights to Turkey, according to the Ynet website.A further 4,000 people landed on return flights. Many of those standing in line at check-in counters admitted that they had quickly purchased tickets once it became clear that the government was going to order a strict lockdown, as it struggles to contain an ongoing surge in the pandemic that has seen daily infection rates climb to over 6,000 fresh cases a day. Those who spoke to media told largely the same story: If they are going to be stuck at home anyway, unable to see family or engage in recreation, then they may as well go abroad where they would be free to enjoy themselves a bit.On Wednesday night the cabinet approved a tight lockdown, to begin Friday, that will nearly close the entire economy, keeping Israelis confined to within 1 kilometer of their homes and only allowed out for essential needs. The cabinet is also reportedly considering closing Ben Gurion Airport to outgoing flights, but the decision was not included in Wednesday’s cabinet vote that authorized the lockdown.Transportation Minister Miri Regev and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi are expected to set an airport closure date for some time in the coming days, Channel 12 news reported.Regev declared Thursday that flights scheduled over the next 24-hours would not be canceled.Transportation Minister Miri Regev visits at the Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv on August 13, 2020. (Flash90)-A closure of the airport would come barely a month after it was partially reopened for outgoing travel, following months of flights being at a trickle due to the coronavirus pandemic. The High Holiday period, which began on Friday evening with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and which ends three weeks later with Simchat Torah — which marks the end of the Sukot holiday — usually sees tens of thousands of Israelis book vacation abroad each year. This year, some 120,000 were due to fly during the period, but at least half were expected to have to cancel their flights due to the lockdown, Channel 12 reported.According to the network, airlines are refusing to reimburse passengers for tickets they will now be unable to use, and the government is girding for a wave of lawsuits from passengers. On Tuesday, Channel 12 reported that due to a lack of synchronization between the Health Ministry and border control authorities at the airport, coronavirus patients are able to board flights without border officers knowing that they are infected. The situation enabled five confirmed carriers to fly abroad recently, the report said.Last week the government ordered a three-week partial lockdown, but as confirmed infections continued to climb ministers this week decided to further clamp down on the country. The harsh measures are set to come into force on Friday at 2 p.m., and will see nearly all businesses closed, prayers and public protests severely curtailed, public transportation scaled back dramatically and Israelis ordered to remain close to home with fewer exceptions than in the existing lockdown.

Palestinian refugee gets Spanish citizenship after discovering Jewish roots-Heba Nabil Iskandarani had been technically stateless her entire life, then she found her Palestinian father had Sephardi heritage-By Cnaan Liphshiz-SEP 24,20-Today, 8:57 pm

JTA — As a British resident born in Dubai to a Palestinian father and Lebanese mother, Heba Nabil Iskandarani had plenty of potential national identities. What she lacked, however, was a passport.A 26-year-old lecturer in architecture at Birmingham City University, Iskandarani has been stateless for most of her life, possessing only a Lebanese travel document that defines her as a Palestinian refugee. But after discovering that her Palestinian father had Jewish roots going back to Spain, Iskandarani was able to claim Spanish citizenship thanks to a 2015 law that promised to naturalize anyone whose Jewish ancestors fled the Spanish Inquisition. In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Iskandarani attributed her quest for citizenship as rooted in both an emotional search for an identity and as a practical remedy to the bureaucratic complications that resulted from her lack of national citizenship.“This deep addiction for belonging made me look deeper into my family history,” Iskandarani wrote in a September 12 Facebook post. “I wanted to find a solution to break the cycle of shame, the feeling of being less than all. I needed an identity a country to fall back too [sic].”In exile I have always been in conflict with my identity, with no sense of belonging or right to any country.. only…Iskandarani is one of more than 43,000 non-Jews who have reportedly received Spanish citizenship under the 2015 law, which was adopted to atone for Spain’s persecution and forced exile of its Jewish community in the 15th century. The law invited its descendants to apply for Spanish citizenship if they could demonstrate both that they were descended from Sephardic Jews and had a special connection to Spain. Over 150,000 have succeeded.Iskandarani had a DNA test that showed she had both North African and Iberian ancestry, and genealogists have shown that her last name can be traced back to Spanish Jews. But she still needed a document attesting to the Jewish identity of her paternal great-grandmother, Latife Djerbi, whose last name references an island off the coast of Tunisia where many Sephardic Jews once lived.Iskandarani managed to find one of her great-grandmother’s old identity cards in Beirut lying in a trove of documents that her family had meticulously preserved for decades despite moving many times — sometimes because of the multiple wars that have ravaged Lebanon. One of her sisters also received Spanish citizenship recently, while two other siblings are in the vetting phase. Her father is applying for citizenship from Portugal. Iskandarani and some of her relatives also applied for Portuguese citizenship under a similar law of return that Portugal passed in 2013. Her application in Portugal is still pending.Iskandarani’s story was first reported on September 20 by the Luxembourg-based paper Contacto.Illustrative: In this photo taken on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, a Jewish woman reads a book at the main Jewish synagogue in Lisbon, Portugal. (AP Photo/Francisco Seco)-The discovery of her father’s Jewish roots came as a shock to some in her family, but others had their suspicions. Her great-grandmother would peel hard boiled eggs and dip them in saltwater during a meal each spring, a habit she said was “just a tradition from Tunisia” but which Iskandarani now believes was related to a custom associated with the Passover seder. And her mother recalled noticing that none of her husband’s ancestors had Muslim names.“His great uncles were named Jacob, Ruben, Moses, Zachary. And my mother now recalls thinking that was strange,” Iskandarani told JTA.Iskandarani said she has grown more interested in Judaism since her discovery, though she had been curious about it previously. At 15, she got a tattoo of a verse from the Hebrew Bible about Jerusalem.“Though maybe that was the Palestinian side of me, maybe mixing with the Jewish one,” she told JTA. “I don’t know at this point.”With the acquisition of her Spanish passport, Iskandarani is now free to visit Jaffa, the ancient port city south of Tel Aviv where her grandfather was born. According to Iskandarani, her family was “exiled” from Jaffa around the time of Israel’s War of Independence in 1948 and, in her Facebook post, she compared the persecution of Jews during the Inquisition to her ancestors’ flight from pre-state Israel.“Absurdly our conversion to Islam got us exiled from Jaffa yet again for again being of different religion and ethnicity,” she wrote. “Quite ironic don’t you think being exiled twice for the exact same reason?”In her interview with JTA, Iskandarani reconsidered the comparison, conceding that there’s a difference between a campaign of religious persecution and the loss of homes during wartime. But despite some past social media posts that have been critical of Israel, Iskandarani said she isn’t interested in taking sides when it comes to Israel and is mainly looking to gain understanding.“I have no interest in offending or accusing any one side,” Iskandarani said. “On the contrary, I want to understand, really understand, the Palestinian side. But also the side of a Jew from Europe or Tunisia who came to Palestine to build a Jewish homeland there. I’m in favor of peace and coexistence.”

In northern West Bank settlement, evangelicals help harvest grapes-The Times of Israel-About a hundred Christian volunteers help Har Bracha vintners pick their crops in controversial region-By Agencies and TOI staff-SEP 24,20-Today, 5:50 pM

Dangling off vines at the Har Bracha settlement in the West Bank, the grapes are plump and ready to pick. This year, evangelical Christians are volunteering for the job.Missouri-based HaYovel organizes “faith-based volunteering” for Christian backers of Israel.“Our mission is to take an active role in, and educate people about, the prophetic RESTORATION of the land of Israel that is happening TODAY,” its website says.More than 450,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, which is claimed by Palestinians for their future state. An aerial view shows Evangelical Christian volunteers harvesting Merlot wine grapes on September 23, 2020, for the Israeli family-run Tura Winery, in the estate’s vineyards located at the West Bank settlement of Har Bracha. (MENAHEM KAHANA/AFP)-Many are attracted by low rents, but others are motivated by a religious doctrine of reestablishing a Jewish presence in the Biblical homeland, a return that marks part of the Bible’s messianic prophecies about Jewish history. That goal is strongly backed by evangelical Christians, particularly in the US, where devout church-goers are seen as key to US President Donald Trump’s reelection bid.Evangelical Christian volunteers harvest Merlot wine grapes on September 23, 2020, for the Israeli family-run Tura Winery, in the estate’s vineyards located at the West Bank Har Bracha settlement (MENAHEM KAHANA / AFP)-In Har Bracha, near the Palestinian city of Nablus, around a hundred Christians are working the vineyards this year, including visitors from the US, Canada and Britain.Evangelical Christian volunteers harvest Merlot wine grapes on September 23, 2020, for the Israeli family-run Tura Winery, in the estate’s vineyards located at the West Bank Har Bracha settlement (MENAHEM KAHANA / AFP)-They include, for example, the vineyards of the family-run Tura Winery. The settlements in that area, founded beginning in the 1970s after Israel captured the area in the 1967 Six Day War, would prevent the formation of a contiguous Palestinian state in the West Bank. The settlements are opposed by most of the international community.Evangelical Christian volunteers harvest Merlot wine grapes on September 23, 2020, for the Israeli family-run Tura Winery, in the estate’s vineyards located at the West Bank settlement of Har Bracha. (Menahem Kahana/AFP)-A controversial plan unveiled by Trump in January gave Washington’s blessing to Israeli annexation of large chunks of the West Bank, mostly in “area C” where Israeli settlements lie. Israel has since agreed to suspend those plans for an undefined period under its normalization deal with the United Arab Emirates last month. The conflict has never been far from Har Bracha. An Arab Israeli was sentenced to life in prison last year for the terrorist murder of Rabbi Itamar Ben Gal, who lived in the settlement. An aerial view shows Evangelical Christian volunteers harvesting Merlot wine grapes on September 23, 2020, for the Israeli family-run Tura Winery, in the estate’s vineyards located at the West Bank settlement of Har Bracha. (Menahem Kahana/AFP)-Even the wine is controversial. Settlements exporting produce to Europe have fallen foul of 2015 EU guidelines on labelling products, including wine, to identify them as coming from the territories rather than Israel.

Fatah, Hamas say they’ve agreed to hold Palestinian elections in coming months-Similar announcements have come to naught in the past; top Fatah official says no vote without East Jerusalemites’ participation, a request Israel has never grante-By Aaron Boxerman-SEP 24,20-Today, 5:50 pm

After reconciliation talks in Istanbul earlier this week, the Fatah and Hamas movements said Thursday they had agreed to hold general Palestinian elections within the next six months.Similar announcements of planned elections have fallen through in the past, largely due to long-running conflict between Fatah and Hamas. If the vote goes forward, however, it would be the first Palestinian national election in fourteen years.Fatah Secretary General Jibril Rajoub, who led Fatah’s delegation to the Turkish capital, said in a statement that the proposal would be submitted to a joint meeting of Palestinian faction heads within a week.Under the proposal, elections would first be held for the Palestinian legislature, then for the Palestinian Authority presidency, and finally for the central council of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The Fatah-led Palestinian Authority controls the West Bank, while the Hamas terror group rules the Gaza Strip.“We are waiting for [Palestinian Authority] President Mahmoud Abbas to call the faction heads to endorse the principle and implement appropriate procedures, beginning with issuing a presidential decree,” Rajoub said.Palestinian legislative elections have not been held since 2006, when a Hamas victory over Fatah led to a bloody struggle for control of the Gaza Strip. Hamas expelled Fatah to the West Bank in 2007, after which the Palestinian Legislative Council essentially ceased to function.Several rounds of reconciliation talks in different Arab capitals have failed to end the split between the two movements, which remain divided by ideological disputes and a violent history. The most recent unity push began when Rajoub and Hamas deputy Saleh al-Arouri announced that they would coordinate “joint action” in response to Israel’s now-suspended plans to annex parts of the West Bank. The cooperation never materialized on the ground, however, and a planned Abbas speech at a rally in Gaza was quietly dropped. In response to the United Arab Emirates’ decision to normalize ties with Israel, a rare meeting of Palestinian faction heads was held earlier in September. One after the other, the leaders of 14 major Palestinian groups spoke, including both Abbas and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh.“We will work to end division, achieve reconciliation, and hold general legislative elections… Know that we are one people,” Abbas said in a speech opening the meeting.Since then, both major Palestinian movements have lauded what they deem publicly to be an era of good feeling between the two groups.“The positive atmosphere of dialogue in Istanbul… resurrects the hope of reaching reconciliation and turning the page on division,” Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said late Wednesday night.pic.twitter.com/G1i2JseTrr- — (@fatehorg) September 24, 2020-But several similar announcements that Palestinians would return to the ballot box have fizzled out over the past 13 years. Local municipal elections have been held in the West Bank three times, with Hamas largely boycotting the proceedings. The most recent attempt at national elections — which began in late December 2019 — broke down when Ramallah insisted that the vote would not be held without East Jerusalem Palestinians being given the right to participate.East Jerusalemites are citizens neither of Israel nor of the Palestinian Authority; instead, they hold permanent Israeli residency cards which only entitle them to vote in Jerusalem municipal elections. While Israel says it offers them a path to Israeli citizenship, relatively few applications have been approved.Israel reportedly ignored the PA’s request in 2019. The Israeli government bans the PA from operating inside the Israeli capital and has cracked down on its activity there in the last few years. Ramallah’s Jerusalem governor Adnan al-Ghaith has been arrested well over a dozen times by Israeli authorities for his activities inside the city.Fatah Central Committee member Azzam Al-Ahmad told Turkish Anadolu News Agency on Thursday that no elections would be held unless East Jerusalem Palestinians are allowed to participate, indicating that elections could founder upon the same rock they did in January.

Visiting USAID deputy says Israeli tech will be key for developing nations-Bonnie Glick notes that Israeli know-how will be needed as leading US development agency implements digital approach, plans 5G roll-out for combating food insecurity, other issues-By Luke Tress-SEP 24,20-Today, 5:11 pm

The deputy administrator for the US Agency for International Development said on Wednesday that Israel has a key role to play in the organization’s efforts to combat food insecurity and poverty in developing nations.Israeli cybersecurity technology, and its private sector, will help the aid agency with its planned implementation of 5G technology in the developing world, Bonnie Glick told The Times of Israel while on a visit to the Jewish state.Jerusalem’s normalization agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain will also open avenues for the countries to collaborate on aid projects, she said.Glick said that USAID, the US government’s development agency, is focused on a digital approach to aid in developing nations.“It’s very different from the old school approach to foreign aid, where people may have considered things like USAID delivering sacks of grain or digging wells. We don’t do that any more,” said Glick. The agency now focuses on providing tools to local groups and individuals, such as smart agricultural tools for farmers, or financial tools, to help developing areas achieve self-sufficiency.“A country the US is supporting, the ultimate goal is for that country to be along the journey to self reliance,” Glick said. “It really needs to be empowered digitally. Its citizens need to have digital tools to participate fully in the nation’s economy, as well as in the global economy.”USAID plans to make use of 5G telecommunications technology when it is widely available to benefit emerging economies, for education, finance, medical communications, and other purposes.“When countries are at that point of being ready to roll out 5G solutions, Israel will be right there with USAID for digital security, protection of data, with critical components for the roll-out,” Glick said, adding that India is another major partner in USAID’s digital plans. “No conversation, I believe, around 5G would be complete if you didn’t have two of the most important technology-driven economies and technology-driven private sectors.”Glick spoke to The Times of Israel while in Israel to meet with government officials, partly to discuss the Abraham Accords with the UAE and Bahrain, as part of a broader trip that included stops in Kosovo, Serbia, Algeria and Morocco. She also on Wednesday held a virtual event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly with Israel-born Oracle CEO Safra Catz as part of the 2020 Concordia Summit. Catz also has ties to the Trump administration.Safra Catz, co-chief executive officer of Oracle, arrives at Trump Tower in New York City on December 14, 2016 in New York City. (Drew Angerer/Getty Images/AFP)-US-based Oracle, one of the world’s leading software firms, partners with USAID, and works with Israeli startup AgroScout, in an example of the role Israeli technology can play in the developing world.AgroScout uses drones and an “auto-scouting app” to collect images and data on agricultural fields, then uses AI to analyze the information and detect pests and crop diseases. The app then navigates users to the site of the problem. The system gives farmers the ability to detect problems earlier, and use chemicals more selectively, saving money and increasing yields.AgroScout relies on Oracle’s cloud platform to analyze its drone images with machine learning technology.“In Israel where you have these cutting edge technologies, these are technologies that can then be scaled and rolled out to developing countries around the world, and that’s something that gets us very excited,” Glick said. “If you look at developed countries, like the United States or Israel, and compare them to a country like Kenya, unless Kenya has access to those 5G types of solutions, they won’t be able to develop as rapidly.”Over 800 million people suffer from food insecurity, according to USAID, and the pandemic is likely to add another 100 million people to those ranks.USAID also aims to partner with private sector firms and local merchants in developing countries.Israel and the UAE, also considered a Middle East technology leader, can now openly collaborate on aid projects in developing countries. Both countries are interested in providing aid to African nations in need of assistance, Glick said: “This seems to me, as well as to the Israeli government, as well as to the UAE government, as a really amazing way for us to put to a test the strength of this new peace, to show a true partnership.”In 2019, USAID invested $20.6 billion in 134 countries. The organization has come under fire in the Middle East in recent years following the Trump administration’s cuts to aid for the Palestinians, forcing the closure of nonprofits serving Palestinian communities.

Declassified: ‘Golden’ communique that could’ve averted Yom Kippur War disaster-The Times of Israel-Also released, scathing exchange general had with war probe-Day before surprise attack, the IDF intel chief received a report Soviet nationals were fleeing the area ahead of an impending assault — and didn’t tell anyone for over 10 hours-By Judah Ari Gross-SEP 24,20-Today, 4:55 pm

Nearly 24 hours before the Egyptian military launched a surprise attack on the Israel Defense Forces from the Sinai Peninsula on October 6, 1973, the head of Military Intelligence received a warning that Cairo and Damascus were poised to carry out just such an assault. For over 10 hours, that dire warning, which had the potential to change the course of the conflict, was kept from the government. On Thursday, the Defense Ministry archives declassified the urgent warning — known as the “golden message” — as well as the intelligence report based on it that was eventually released to the government, along with the heated exchanges after the war between the then-head of Military Intelligence Maj. Gen. Eli Zeira, who made the decision to withhold the communique, and the Agranat Commission, which investigated the government and military’s failures to anticipate and prepare for the conflict. The declassification of these documents on Thursday, coming ahead of the 47th anniversary of the war, sheds fresh light on what had been known by the IDF and Military Intelligence before the outbreak, as well as the finger-pointing that came after it.Following the war, Zeira received the lion’s share of the commission’s blame for Israel getting caught off-guard by the Egyptian and Syrian attacks, allegations that he immediately rebuffed and — now a nonagenarian — continues to reject. In his letters to the Agranat Commission, he maintains that it was the government and civilian leadership that bore the blame for not anticipating the attacks and indicates that he did not immediately pass along the “golden message” because he was waiting for better-sourced intelligence. The records released this week show the military and the government’s failure of imagination, their hubris and their unwillingness to revisit underlying, foundational assessments — namely that Syria and Egypt were not prepared for another war — in the face of new information. In the days preceding the war, the military was at its highest level of alertness. In the south, the IDF had spotted the Egyptian military moving unprecedented numbers of troops and weaponry near the border, and in the north, there was also an “unparalleled Syrian military build-up along the front line,” according to Chaim Herzog, an IDF major general during the war who authored a seminal history of the conflict, “The War of Atonement.”But Military Intelligence and its commander Zeira believed that war was unlikely, that the Egyptians were only preparing for an exercise and that the Syrians were flexing their muscles after the Israeli Air Force shot down a number of Syrian planes in mid-September.While the IDF saw another conflict with Egypt and Syria as a matter of when, not if, Zeira was convinced that the chances of an imminent war were “lower than low,” as he told an IDF General Staff meeting on October 5.The so-called ‘golden message’ that warned of the impending Yom Kippur War, which was delivered to Military Intelligence on October 5, 1973, and was declassified on September 24, 2020. (Defense Ministry Archives)-This assessment should have changed. Later that day, at 4:45 p.m. — just over 21 hours before the Egyptian surprise attack known as Operation Badr that kicked off the war — Military Intelligence received the “golden” communique. The laconic four-sentence message, marked “urgent,” explained the reason the IDF had noticed that Soviet military advisers and diplomats to Syria in the previous days had begun leaving the country, en masse, along with their families. Even now, nearly 50 years later, portions of this message remain classified, including the names of who sent it and who received it.“It is known to us [redacted] that Syria is expelling the Soviet experts and that the planes have begun taking them from Damascus to Moscow. Those same sources say that even the families of Soviet diplomats have started to arrive from Damascus. The sources add that the Syrians explained the expulsion as being because of the intentions of Egypt and Syria to wage a war against Israel and that they are therefore being expelled. For your information,” the message read.At the time the message was received, the IDF had also seen a similar mass exodus of Soviet advisers and their families from Egypt and all Soviet ships leaving Egypt’s Port Said and Alexandria. According to Herzog, the military was puzzled by the departures at the time, not sure if it signified a potential split between Moscow and the two countries or if the Soviets were “aware of the possibility of an Arab attack.”This missive firmly indicated the latter, that an assault was imminent. Yet the “golden message” was not passed on. The officer who received the communique “recalled that the head of his shift told him that evening that the head of intelligence ordered that they not release [the telegram], and to hold it up,” according to the Agranat Commission.Former IDF Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. (res.) Eli Zeira in February 1973. (Roni Frenkel/Defense Ministry Archives)-In his response, Zeira never admitted to giving the order, saying he did not remember the incident nor did he think he needed to personally approve its release in the first place.“But in retrospect, I can try to reconstruct a possible explanation for delaying [its release] with the fact that — as was said — we did not assess that the message added anything to our existing assessment and it’s possible I hoped to receive more significant messages shortly. But as I said, I don’t remember delaying [its release] before midnight,” he wrote to the commission on March 21, 1974.Indeed, a number of additional reports did come in throughout the night, indicating the precise number and types of aircraft shepherding the Soviet officials and their families out of Damascus and Cairo. The next morning — the morning of the war — at 6:35, Military Intelligence distributed its report to the government, warning of imminent attack, citing a source in the Soviet Union, whose name remains classified. The intelligence report also apparently included information provided by a Mossad source — Ashraf Marwan, a confidant of then-Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, known by the code name “The Angel” — who warned there was a “99 percent chance” that the war would be launched on October 6, according to Mossad documents released by the state archives in 2018.At 2 p.m., 7.5 hours after the Military Intelligence report was released, the Egyptians and Syrians launched their surprise attacks on the Suez Canal and Golan Heights, respectively, sparking the 19-day war, which left over 2,500 Israeli soldiers killed and thousands more wounded. The war — and the country’s failure to anticipate it — shattered the public’s trust in the military and the government, along with Israel’s feelings of invincibility following the unexpected, overwhelming victory of the Six Day War six years prior.Former Supreme Court chief justice Shimon Agranat. (Ze'ev Radovan/Defense Ministry Archives)-The Agranat Commission was formed weeks after the war ended, charged with investigating the myriad failures that allowed such a surprise attack. The commission’s exchanges with Zeira were also released on Thursday, in which the panel detailed the ways in which the intelligence chief had failed to foresee the attacks.Though Zeira acknowledges that he made some mistakes, he roundly and vigorously rejects two of the commission’s findings: that he told the government he could anticipate the “intentions” of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Syrian president Hafez Assad and that such assessments were his responsibility alone.Zeira maintained that he had assured then-prime minister Golda Meir that he would be able to track the “preparations” for war by Egypt and Syria, during a meeting with the premier on April 18, 1973, but made no such promises regarding the countries’ “intentions.”“There was a promise about giving a warning about preparations, not about intentions,” he told the commission.Then-prime minister Golda Meir with southern command chief Gen. Shmuel Gonen during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, visiting an IDF command post in the Sinai Desert. (Yitzhak Segev/GPO)-“To the best of my knowledge — and I am using this language out of caution and responsibility — I did not promise to give a warning in advance about the enemy’s intentions,” he added. Moreover, Zeira said, such assessments were not his to make, at least not his alone.“I ask you: Who is it whose training, experience, duty and responsibility require him to determine the intentions of heads of neighboring states, is it the premier of the State of Israel and their top ministers or just army officers?” Zeira wrote to the commission.“Is it possible to claim that assessing the intentions of heads of friendly countries is the responsibility of the government and that assessing the intentions of heads of enemy countries is the responsibility of the army?!” he asked. While Zeira was found to be principally responsible for the intelligence failure of the war, the government did not fare well. Golda Meir resigned as prime minister, as did Moshe Dayan as defense minister. Though the Labor party retained control of the government in the election immediately following the war, it lost to the right-wing Likud party in the subsequent election, in part due to lingering disaffection from the Yom Kippur War.

15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Jordan, Egypt and EU urge renewal of Israel-Palestinian peace talks-At meeting in Amman, FMs cite need to ‘rebuild confidence to allow the relaunching of the negotiation process,’ say Israeli pledge to suspend annexation ‘should become permanent’By AFP-SERP 24,20-Today, 5:07 pm

AMMAN, Jordan — The foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt, France and Germany on Thursday urged Israel and the Palestinians to engage in “credible dialogue” to restore “hope” to the peace process.“Ending the stalemate in peace talks, the creation of political horizons and the restoration of hope through credible dialogue must be a priority,” they said in a statement. The meeting comes after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain moved to formally establish full diplomatic ties with Israel, the third and fourth Arab states to do so after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994.Talks between Israel and the Palestinians have been frozen since 2014, and a US peace plan announced in January has been welcomed by Israel and rejected outright by the Palestinians as biased. After Thursday’s meeting, the ministers stressed “the urgency of the resumption of serious, meaningful and effective negotiations on the basis of international law and agreed parameters directly between the parties or under the UN umbrella.”“We call upon the parties to commit to past agreements and to resume credible dialogue on this basis,” they said. The meeting was also attended by the EU’s envoy for the peace process.EU Special Envoy for the Middle East Peace Process Susanna Terstal (L), Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry (2nd-L), Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi (4th-R) and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian (R) are pictured in the Jordanian capital Amman during an international meeting to discuss the Israel-Palestinian peace process, September 24, 2020. (Khalil Mazraawi/Pool/AFP)-The ministers also met Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who reiterated a long-held position that ending the conflict required “a two-state solution with an independent (and) viable Palestinian state” based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinians’ capital. The UAE and Bahrain signed accords normalizing ties with Israel at a September 15 ceremony hosted by US President Donald Trump.Under the deal with Abu Dhabi, the Jewish state pledged to suspend its planned annexation of lands in the West Bank.“This suspension should become permanent,” the ministers said Thursday, stressing the “importance” of the UAE and Bahrain deals.Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi (R) and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian are pictured in the Jordanian capital Amman during an international meeting to discuss the Israel-Palestinian peace process, September 24, 2020. (Khalil Mazraawi/Pool/AFP)“The Israelis and Palestinians must quickly resume dialogue,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told journalists.“In the immediate term, we must rebuild confidence to allow the relaunching of the negotiation process, which is in the interest of both parties.”Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned of the dangers of “a political stalemate in the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.”“There has to be progress towards a comprehensive and just peace,” he said.

School bus-sized asteroid to zoom by Earth, closer than many satellites-By space standards, Asteroid 2020 SW is pretty puny and will safely pass Earth on Thursday, NASA says-By Marcia Dunn-SEP 24,20-Today, 3:02 pm

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) — An asteroid the size of a school bus is headed our way, but NASA says the space rock will zoom safely past Earth on Thursday. The newly discovered asteroid will come within 13,000 miles (22,000 kilometers) of Earth, well below many of the communications satellites orbiting the planet, scientists said this week. The closest approach will occur Thursday morning over the southeastern Pacific Ocean.Once it’s gone, the asteroid won’t be back to Earth’s neighborhood until 2041.Scientists estimate the asteroid is between 15 feet and 30 feet (4.5 meters to 9 meters). By asteroid standards, that’s considered puny. Asteroids of this size hit Earth’s atmosphere and burn up once every year or two, said Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. There could be as many as 100 million of these little asteroids out there. The real threat are considerably bigger asteroids. The good news is that these are easier to spot much sooner than just a few days out.Asteroid 2020 SW, as it is known, was discovered last Friday by the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

Snow, gusting wind headed for southern Baffin Island-[CBC]-September 24, 2020

It's a stormy start to fall in Nunavut, with no relief expected until the weekend. On the first day of fall, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a winter storm warning for Kinngait — the first of the season in Nunavut. Southern Baffin Island and Nunavik are in for a week of rain, snow and gusting winds. A low-pressure system made its way from Hudson Bay toward the island on Tuesday. The system will likely get stronger later in the week from the remnants of Hurricane Teddy, which is currently approaching the Maritimes.Tracking the system-This low-pressure system will move toward southern Baffin Island tonight, and continue over communities Wednesday and Thursday. Here's how it will play out:Kinngait will be the first to see winter storm conditions, and will get the brunt of the heavy, wet snow. Gusty conditions to 90 kilometres per hour will intensify overnight and into Wednesday. Kimmirut will see rain and wind Tuesday night, with more precipitation building through the early hours of Wednesday. Gusting winds will begin Tuesday evening.Iqaluit will have snow Tuesday evening, and gusting winds beginning after midnight to 90 kilometres per hour.Pangnirtung will see stormy conditions Wednesday morning with the beginning of a rain-snow mixture. Gusts will increase to 90 kilometres per hour early Wednesday afternoon. These conditions will last through Thursday as this system continues to spin around until it absorbs further energy from the remnants of Hurricane Teddy. The most intense conditions will occur on Wednesday with the storm clearing into Saturday. Current warnings in placeA winter storwarning is in effect for Kinngait, and the conditions will continue through the next few days. Wind gusts will increase to 90 kilomtres per hour overnight, and up to 25 centimetres of wet, heavy, messy, snow is expected to fall through Thursday. This will create near-blizzard conditions, with reduced visibility for the community through the next 24 to 36 hours.Meanwhile, Kimmirut currently has a wind warning in effect, for gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour.As for marine warnings, in the regions surrounding Nunavik and southern Baffin Island, gale warnings are in effect for gusts to 47 knots. Waves may increase to five meters through Wednesday. Messy mix of snow, rain on the way-this system will bring a messy mixture — particularly to Kimmirut, Iqaluit and Pangnirtung — in which snow will change to rain and back to snow over the week. Kinngait is more likely to just have wet snow.Winter storm conditions are likely over the next few days, which means reduced visibility, blowing snow and wind causing potential damage to buildings.Environment Canada recommends postponing non-essential travel during the winter storm warning.

Trump pledges to tap woman for court, pushes Senate to move fast on pick-The Times of IsraelUS president says he’ll nominate successor to Ginsburg before November 3 vote despite Democratic opposition: ‘We win an election and those are the consequences’ By Jonathan Lemire, LISA MASCARO and Steve Peoples-sep 20,20-Today, 1:19 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — US President Donald Trump on Saturday promised to put forth a female nominee in the coming week to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, pushing the Republican-controlled Senate to consider the pick without delay.Taking the stage at a North Carolina rally to chants of “Fill that seat,” the president said he would nominate his selection despite Democrats’ objections. And, after conducting what he joked was a “very scientific poll” of the Fayetteville crowd as to whether supporters wanted a man or a woman, he declared the choice would be “a very talented, very brilliant woman.”He added that he did not yet know whom he would choose.“We win an election and those are the consequences,” said the president, who then seemed to signal that he’d be willing to accept a vote on his nominee during the lame duck period after the election, should he lose. “We have a lot of time. We have plenty of time. We’re talking about January 20th.”
US President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Fayetteville Regional Airport, September 19, 2020, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)-But one Republican senator already broke ranks. Maine’s Susan Collins, who is in a tough reelection battle, said Saturday that she believed replacing Ginsburg should be the decision of the president who is elected November 3. Three more defections from the GOP ranks would be needed to stop Trump’s nominee from joining the court. At stake is a seat held by a justice who was a champion of women’s rights and spent her final years on the bench as the unquestioned leader of the court’s liberal wing. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed to call a vote for Trump’s nominee, but Democrats countered that Republicans should follow the precedent that GOP legislators set in 2016 by refusing to consider a Supreme Court choice in the run-up to an election.US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg leaves the stage after speaking to first-year students at Georgetown Law in Washington, September 26, 2018. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)The impending clash over the vacant seat — when to fill it and with whom — scrambles the stretch run of a presidential race for a nation already reeling from the pandemic that has killed nearly 200,000 people, left millions unemployed and heightened partisan tensions and anger.McConnell pledged to Trump in a phone call Friday night to bring the choice to a vote though he has not said if it would be before the election. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said any selection should come after November 3. “Voters should pick the president and the president should pick the justice to consider,” he said. The president this month added 20 more names to his roster of potential court nominees, and aides in recent days have focused on a short list heavy on female candidates, according to four White House aides and officials close to the process. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss private conversations. Those under close consideration for the high court include three women who are federal appeals court judges: Amy Coney Barrett, beloved among conservatives and an early favorite; Barbara Lagoa, who is Hispanic and comes from the battleground state of Florida; and Allison Jones Rushing, who clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas and for Neil Gorsuch, when the current Trump-appointed justice was an appeals court judge.McConnell, who sets the calendar in the Senate and has made judicial appointments his priority, declared unequivocally in a statement that Trump’s nominee would receive a confirmation vote. In 2016, McConnell refused to consider President Barack Obama’s nominee months before the election, eventually preventing a vote on Judge Merrick Garland.Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York convened a conference call with Democratic senators at midday Saturday, according to a person on the private call who was not authorized to discuss it publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. He told senators the “number one goal” must be to communicate the stakes of the confirmation vote.Schumer also warned that if Republicans push through the nominee, “nothing is off the table” for Senate rules changes to come, the person said.Ginsburg’s death led to a wave of mourning, including an informal memorial at the Supreme Court and a protest outside McConnell’s house. It also seemed certain to stoke enthusiasm in both political parties as the election could now be viewed as referendum on the high court’s decisions, including the future of abortion rights.Protesters rally outside the house of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Louisville, Kentucky, September 19, 2020. (AP Photo/Timothy D. Easley)-Democrats raised more than $60 million in the hours after Ginsburg’s death, indicating her passing has already galvanized the party’s base.A confirmation vote in the Senate is not guaranteed, even with a Republican majority.McConnell has launched a risky, unprecedented strategy. It could motivate conservative voters to rally behind Trump and GOP senators or it could push away moderates who prefer to see the Senate stick to norms or are fearful of a right-leaning court stripping away women’s right to choose an abortion.Typically, it takes several months to vet and hold hearings on a Supreme Court nominee, and time is short before November. Key senators may be reluctant to cast votes so close to the election. With a slim GOP majority, 53 seats in the 100-member chamber, Trump’s choice could afford to lose only a few.McConnell did not specify the timing. But trying for confirmation in a lame-duck session after the November 3 election, if Trump had lost to Biden or Republicans had lost the Senate, would carry further political complications.Democrats immediate denounced McConnell’s move as hypocritical, pointing out that he refused to call hearings for Garland 237 days before the 2016 election. The 2020 election is 46 days away. The average number of days to confirm a justice, according to the Congressional Research Service, is 69, which would be after the election. But some Republicans quickly noted that Ginsburg was confirmed in just 42 days. Obama waited more than a month to nominate Garland after Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016.John Fischetti, who waited in line more than two hours to enter Trump’s Fayetteville rally, said replacing Ginsburg would inflame tensions but was within the president’s rights.“I would assume it would make everyone more energized,” Fischetti said of the political repercussions. “Trump’s people want him to always press forward.”Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska left, and Senator Susan Collins of Maine, walk together following a vote at the Capitol in Washington, February 12, 2020. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)-Four GOP defections could defeat a nomination, while a tie vote could be broken by Vice President Mike Pence. After Collins’ decision, focus grew on Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah, who have been critical of Trump and protective of the institution of the Senate. And because the Arizona Senate race is a special election, that seat could be filled as early as November 30 — which would narrow the window for McConnell if the Democratic candidate, Mark Kelly, wins. The next pick could shape important decisions beyond abortion rights, including any legal challenges that may stem from the 2020 election. In the interim, if the court were to take cases with eight justices, 4-4 ties would revert the decision to a lower court; for instance, the Affordable Care Act could then be struck down by a lower Texas court.Biden has promised to nominate a Black woman to the high court if given the chance. His campaign reiterated Saturday that it would release names before the election.

US to hit 200,000 dead; Trump sees no need for regret-The Times of Israel-sep 20,20-Analysis-US president says without his efforts things would be much worse: ‘We have done a phenomenal job with respect to COVID-19’By Julie Pace-sep 20,20-Today, 4:36 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the coronavirus pandemic began bearing down on the United States in March, US President Donald Trump set out his expectations. If the US could keep the death toll between 100,000 to 200,000 people, Trump said, it would indicate that his administration had “done a very good job.”In the coming days, the number of US deaths is set to clear the outer band of the president’s projections: 200,000, according to the official tally, though the real number is certainly higher. The virus continues to spread and there is currently no approved vaccine. Some public health experts fear infections could spike this fall and winter, perhaps even doubling the death count by the end of the year.Yet the grim milestone and the prospect of more American deaths to come have prompted no rethinking from the president about his handling of the pandemic and no outward expressions of regrets. Instead, Trump has sought to reshape the significance of the death tally, trying to turn the loss of 200,000 Americans into a success story by contending the numbers could have been even higher without the actions of his administration.“If we didn’t do our job, it would be three and a half, two and a half, maybe 3 million people,” Trump said Friday, leaning on extreme projections of what could have happened if nothing at all were done to fight the pandemic. “We have done a phenomenal job with respect to COVID-19.”Trump’s reelection prospects will hinge in part on whether enough voters agree with that assessment. The challenge he faces in making his case, with just over six weeks before the Nov. 3 election and voting already underway in some states, is clear.Volunteers prepare donations for delivery to those affected by COVID-19 on tribal lands, June 25, 2020, in Tempe, Arizona. (AP/Matt York)-Just 39% of Americans approve of the president’s handling of the pandemic, according to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Roughly one-quarter of Republicans say they don’t approve of Trump’s stewardship of the public health crisis, though his overall backing among GOP voters sits at a comfortable 84%.There’s also little doubt that the death toll in the US has soared past where Trump repeatedly assured the public it would be. In February, when the first coronavirus cases were detected in the US, the president said the numbers would be “down to close to zero” within days. In early April, when US officials estimated at least 100,000 people would die from the pandemic even if all conceivable steps were taken against it, Trump suggested the numbers would be lower, saying: “I think we’re doing better than that.”He’s shifted again in recent days, saying that the US remains a success story because some models showed the nation could have 240,000 deaths — a threshold that appears likely to be eclipsed by the end of the year.Well aware of his sluggish standing with voters on the pandemic, Trump has spent recent weeks trying to refocus his race against Democrat Joe Biden on other issues, including promising white suburban voters that he would keep crime in liberal cities from encroaching on their neighborhoods.A portrait of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is displayed at a storefront on September 19, 2020, in New York, New York. (Jeenah Moon/Getty Images/AFP)-Trump will now campaign in particular on the courts, given Friday’s death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, seeking to lure back Republican voters who may have turned on him during the pandemic, with the promise of more conservatives on the high court.Though the Supreme Court vacancy does significantly jolt the White House race, Biden still wants to keep much of the focus on the coronavirus. He strengthened his standing through the summer by hammering what he calls the Trump administration’s failures to take the virus threat seriously and to provide consistent guidance to the public, including around the effectiveness of wearing face masks. After revelations in a new book from journalist Bob Woodward that Trump intentionally played down the seriousness of the virus earlier this year, Biden said of a president’s responsibilities: “You’ve got to level with the American people — shoot from the shoulder,” adding, “There’s not been a time they’ve not been able to step up.”Trump has insisted he wasn’t downplaying the severity of the virus when he compared it with the seasonal flu and undercut public health officials who pushed for more stringent mitigation efforts. Yet he’s repeatedly flouted his own administration’s safety guidelines, rarely wearing a mask himself and holding large campaign events with little evidence of social distancing among his crowds.US President Donald Trump arrives to speak at a rally at Xtreme Manufacturing, September 13, 2020, in Henderson, Nevada (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)-With the death toll continuing to climb, Trump has also repeatedly passed up opportunities to serve as a unifying force for communities and families grieving the loss of loved ones. Instead, he’s effectively discounted the deaths of Americans who live in Democratic-leaning states, suggesting he has little responsibility for the well-being of those who don’t support him politically.“If you take the blue states out, we’re at a level that I don’t think anybody in the world would be at,” Trump said this past week about the death toll. “Some of the states, they were blue states and blue state-managed.”It was a jarring statement from an American president, yet one in keeping with Trump’s handling of the pandemic and his presidency. He’s long taken a transactional approach to his office, and he spent the opening weeks of the pandemic feuding with Democratic governors in hard-hit states, challenging them to lift restrictions that he deemed harmful to the strong economy he’d hoped to ride to a second term.“He sees everything, including the implications of this terrible virus, in terms of his own political and personal success — ‘How does it affect me and my electability and my popularity,’” said Margaret Susan Thompson, a professor of history and political science at Syracuse University. The question looming over his presidency now, as Americans mourn 200,000 lives lost, is what the effects of his handling of the pandemic will be on his political future. The answer will come soon enough from his fellow Americans.

Rosh Hashanah'People long for a more enchanted connection to time'-ing in 5781 with Jewish calendar that puts an artistic spin on time-The Misaviv Hebrew Circle Calendar ventures out of the box with its round format, celebrating a mystical concept that incorporates seasonal and life cycles, nature and femininity-By Madison Margolin-sep 20,20-Today, 1:53 pm

LOS ANGELES — A recent study in The Journal of Neuroscience confirms what we’ve long suspected — time flies when you’re having fun (or at least, having new experiences). Likewise, in times of at-home quarantine, it can feel as if it’s creeping along. But long before the discovery of neurons, Jewish mystics had looked to the Hebrew lunar calendar to tap into time’s cyclical attributes.“People have become very aware this year that time can flow in different ways,” says Jorian Polis Schutz, creator and publisher of the Misaviv Hebrew Circle Calendar.Misaviv is an out-of-the-box visual representation of the Hebrew calendar. Each month is illustrated by an interpretive painting commissioned by a contemporary Jewish artist. Today it’s largely found in the homes of an in-the-know few who belong to more creative circles. Now, as Rosh Hashanah rolls back around and people brace themselves for the new Hebrew year 5781, the calendar is again gaining mainstream relevance.“It’s far from a corporate product — it’s very heimish,” says Schutz, using a Yiddish term that approximately translates to homegrown. “And on a sociological front, I think it’s some sort of sign that there are more people who are interested in creative takes on Jewish time than ever before. It’s a new demographic.Jorian Polis Schutz, creator and publisher of the Misaviv Hebrew Circle Calendar. (Courtesy)-Traditional calendars, both Gregorian and Hebrew, are boxy and rigid. A circular calendar, Schutz contends, displays “an idea of wholeness” that rectangular calendars lack. The circular Misaviv calendar is symbolic and meaningful, he says. It reflects the cycles of nature — that is, seasons and phases of the moon — and projects a more feminine resonance.“A lot of people are longing for a more enchanted connection to time,” Schutz says. “And Judaism is all about that.”The Hebrew calendar is based upon the lunar cycle, with holidays often falling on the full moon. Some main holidays — Passover and the High Holy Days, for example — can be thought of as being on opposite sides of the year; the days of the week, as well, fall concentrically around a Sabbath focal point.“One of the things the calendar is doing is getting you into a rhythm,” says Schutz. Not to mention, he adds, “the Torah makes the argument for spiral-based time” — a combination of circular and linearThe concept of “spiral time” appears in many Jewish mystical practices.“Spiral time means we’re progressively moving forward and upward, but hitting the same points we hit in the year before,” explains Rabbi DovBer Pinson, head of the IYYUN Center for Jewish Spirituality in Brooklyn, New York, and author of many books, including “The Spiral of Time: Unraveling the Yearly Cycle.”Artist’s rendering of the month of Shvat for the Misaviv calendar 5781. (Courtesy/ Melina Monteagudo) “Every year we experience the same seasons as we cycle through the pattern of the year, but we’re also spiraling higher and higher,” Pinson says.Rabbi DovBer Pinson of the IYYUN Center for Jewish Spirituality. (Courtesy)-On the Misaviv calendar, the days of the week are shown as a series of concentric circles, similar to the rings of a tree. Sundays are the outermost circle, then Mondays, and so on, with Shabbat the central point on the page.“Shabbos is a day to come from or go toward,” says Pinson. “So in that paradigm of time, Shabbos is the center, and the week flows in and out of Shabbos.”The Jewish names for the days of the week reflect this. Instead of being named for planets, the days are numbered according to where they fall in relation to the Sabbath. Sunday is “Yom Rishon B’Shabbat,” or Day One towards the Sabbath, while Friday is “Yom Shishi B’Shabbat,” or Day Six towards the Sabbath-Sunday through Tuesday are seen as the days after the Sabbath, Pinson explains, whereas Wednesday through Friday are those leading up to the Sabbath. And the Sabbath itself is the sacred pinnacle of the week — or as scholar Abraham Joshua Heschel put it a “palace in time.” It’s outside of and distinct from our mundane experience the rest of the week, meaning that time flows and feels differently on the Sabbath, a day of stillness and being in the present.Artist’s rendering of the month of Kislev for the Misaviv calendar 5781. (Courtesy/ Jenia Vasilenko-Feeling outside time and being very much in the present moment allows people to get into “the best state of mind you can be in,” says Marc Wittmann, research fellow at the Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health in Freiburg, Germany, and author of “Felt Time: The Psychology of How We Perceive Time.”Wittmann notes that cycles or repetition can help us escape an unhealthy attachment to time, from ruminating on the past or being anxious about the future. Whether it’s repetitive shamanistic drumming or the repetition of seasons, cycles are liberating because they help mitigate our hyper-awareness of self and time.Artist’s rendering of the month of Nisan for the Misaviv calendar 5781. (Courtesy/ Federico Parolo)-As the most prevalent cycle of the Jewish calendar, “Shabbat is both the destination and culmination of our weeks — as well as the springboard to the next,” says Schutz. The Circle Calendar is formatted to show this, with the Sabbath both at the month’s center and fully around its rim.“On Shabbat we are enveloped in spaciousness and delight, and we are re-ensouled,” Schultz writes in the introduction to this year’s calendar. “Make [Shabbat] your portal to an all-embracing, all-encompassing outer rim, and you have learned to use Misaviv 5781.”

The UAE announced the end of its boycott of Israel last month, allowing commerce to flow between the oil-rich Emirates and Israel. Already, Emirati and Israeli banks and research firms have rushed to sign agreements. Also on Thursday, Emirates Flight Catering, which supplies meals to Emirates Airlines and over 100 others, said it would establish a facility dedicated to making certified kosher food at its UAE headquarters, with production due to start in January.
With Israeli businessmen and tourists expected to start popping up soon in the federation of seven sheikhdoms, “demand for kosher food in the UAE and the region will grow quickly,” said Saeed Mohammed, CEO of Emirates Flight Catering. The partnership with CCL Holdings, a kosher certification company, will likely extend to opening kosher restaurants and offering certified kosher food at hotels and events across other Gulf Arab countries, he added, without specifying which ones.

Leaked docs: Arab Bank was involved in potential terrorist financing until 2016-Despite settling a lawsuit with terror victims in 2015, Amman-based bank continued to transfer money to entities with suspected links to terrorist groups, documents show-By Uri Blau in partnership with Shomrim-SEP 20,20-Today, 8:00 pm

A massive leak of financial intelligence reports reveals that Arab Bank facilitated payments to organizations and bodies suspected to be connected to terrorism, even after the Jordan-based bank had agreed to pay massive amounts in compensation to terror victims. The information appears in a confidential financial intelligence report compiled by a British bank named Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), which served as a correspondent bank for Arab Bank. SCB suspected that Arab Bank continued to transfer money to “entities with suspected links to terrorist groups” until 2016, the year the report was filed. The Arab Bank, which operates from Amman, is one of the largest banks in the Arab world. In 2004, Arab Bank was sued in the United States by American victims of terror attacks carried out in Israel. The plaintiffs claimed that the bank had carried out wire transfers to various entities linked to Hamas and had thus been a party to terror financing. The trial itself opened a decade later, in 2014. After six weeks the jury decided in favor of the plaintiffs. The Arab Bank HQ in Amman, Jordan, in 2010 (Jean pierre x / Wikipedia)-The bank appealed the verdict but at the same time entered into settlement negotiations. The details of the settlement that was ultimately reached remain confidential, but according to Israeli media reports the bank agreed to compensate the plaintiffs for about $1 billion. In 2018, the bank won its appeal on the basis of the claim that the judge had given incorrect instructions to the jury prior to the trial. While the jury verdict was voided, the settlement remained in effect. The Park Hotel in Netanya on the night of March 27, 2002, after a suicide bombing killed 30 people. (Flash90)-At the end of 2019, another lawsuit was filed against the bank by more than 1,000 terror victims and their families. This lawsuit was filed by Israeli citizens in Jerusalem District Court. The complaint mentions a long list of terror attacks, including the March 2002 Passover suicide bombing at the Park Hotel in Netanya (in which 30 civilians were killed in the worst such attack of the Second Intifada), the June 2001 Dolphinarium discotheque attack in Tel Aviv (in which 21 Israelis, most of them teenagers, were killed), and the August 2001 suicide bombing at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem (in which 15 civilians were killed)-Inscription at the site of the June 2001 Dolphinarium suicide bombing, in which 21 Israelis were killed (Photo: Avi1111 dr. avishai teicher /Wikipedia)-Now, a massive leak of classified financial reports submitted by banks all over the world to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the US Treasury Department (FinCen), has revealed that the British bank continued to work with the Jordanian bank during the years of the lawsuit and afterwards, and that some of the bank transfers that passed through the British bank raised its suspicions. The financial reports, which were submitted to the US Congress as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections, were leaked to the Buzzfeed news site, which in turn shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and through them with 400 journalists from 108 media outlets around the world.(ICIJ’s Israeli partners are Uri Blau, the author of this article, and Shomrim, the Center for Media and Democracy, which made it available to The Times of Israel.)-Standard Chartered Bank HQ in London (Cobaltblue25 / Wikipedia)-The Arab Bank was a client of Standard Chartered Bank for 25 years. The British bank served as a correspondent bank for, and executed wire transfers on behalf of, the Arab Bank.Reports that SCB submitted to FinCen reveal that between 2013 and 2014, years after the filing of the US lawsuit, the Arab Bank carried out over 2000 bank transactions, totaling about $24 million, that raised SCB’s suspicions as being intended for organizations and bodies connected to terrorism. At the beginning of 2016, SCB submitted another report describing 910 new wire transfers totaling more than $11 million that struck the bank as suspicious. The last group of transfers were carried out through February 1, 2016 — in other words, over a period of about a year and a half after the US trial against the Arab Bank had begun and ended. Many of these transfers were categorized as intended for “donations,” “charity,” “support,” or “gifts.” SCB reported its concerns that these transfers were in fact illegal payments in disguise, and that many of the transfers had been carried out by people whose identity it was not possible to verify.SCB said in its report that these discoveries had caused it to stop working with the Arab Bank.It is important to emphasize that the act of submitting reports to the US government is not sufficient to determine that any illicit activity took place, and that it is possible that the transfers were legal and that their pattern of execution happened to raise the suspicions of the reporting bank.In a statement, Arab Bank told ICIJ it “abhors terrorism and does not support or encourage terrorist activities.” The bank said that allegations against it date back nearly 20 years to a time when anti-money-laundering laws, tools and technologies were different than they are now.“In every country where it operates, Arab Bank is in good standing with government regulators and complies with anti-terrorism and money laundering laws,” the bank said. The 2005 US regulatory limits against the bank were formally lifted in 2018.Standard Chartered told the BBC, a partner of ICIJ, that it “initiated account closure” in connection to Arab Bank shortly after the jury verdict. “This process can take time in some cases,” the bank said, “but in all cases the bank continues to fulfill its regulatory obligations” while exiting accounts.Arab Bank noted it “enjoys a longstanding relationship with Standard Chartered” that “continues today.”Standard Chartered no longer processes US dollar transactions for Arab Bank, but it still provides other banking services for the Jordanian financial institution, Arab Bank told ICIJ.
Thousands of suspicious activity reports leaked-The documents reached reporters as part of an unprecedented leak of financial intelligence reports that were submitted to the US Treasury Department. The leak also includes reports on Israeli businessmen, companies and banks. These financial intelligence reports, known as suspicious activity reports, document suspicious economic activities that may be linked to money laundering and/or terrorism financing.Financial Crimes Enforcement Network logo-Financial institutions all over the world are required to submit such reports to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the US Treasury Department. That is why this leak has been dubbed the FinCen files.FinCen is responsible for gathering information on suspicious financial activity that could turn out to be money laundering or terror financing. FinCen’s Israeli counterpart is the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prevention Authority in the Ministry of Justice. The leaked reports were among thousands of documents that were submitted to the US Congress as part of the investigation into suspicions of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections. They were leaked to the US-based website Buzzfeed, which shared them with the ICIJ and through the ICIJ with more than 400 journalists from 108 media outlets around the world, including NBC in the United States, the BBC in the UK, Le Monde in France, L’Espresso in Italy, WDR and NDR in Germany and many others.Buzzfeed did not reveal the source of the documents but in January of this year a former FinCen employee, Natalie Mayflower Edwards, pleaded guilty to “conspiring to unlawfully disclose suspicious activity reports.”The complaint filed against Edwards, a Virginia resident in her 40s, mentioned that twelve news articles were published as a result of her leak. She is expected to be sentenced in October. This article was written in collaboration with Shomrim, the Center for Media and Democracy

March of 100,000 defy police crackdown to mark week 7 of Belarus protests-Demonstrators met with hundreds of soldiers deploying water cannons, armored personnel carriers and erecting barbed wire barriers; dozens said arrested-By YURAS KARMANAU-sep 20,20-Today, 7:08 pm

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Tens of thousands of Belarusians calling for the authoritarian president to resign marched through the capital Sunday as the country’s wave of protests entered its seventh week.Hundreds of soldiers blocked off the center of Minsk, deploying water cannons and armored personnel carriers and erecting barbed wire barriers. Protests also took place in several other cities, including Brest and Grodno. The crowd in Minsk included about 100,000 people, said Ales Bialiatski, head of the Viasna human rights organization. Some bore placards depicting Lukashenko as a mustachioed cockroach.Although protests have taken place daily since the election, the Sunday gatherings in Minsk have been by far the largest, attracting crowds of as many as 200,000 people.“Every Sunday, you are showing yourselves and the world that the Belarusian people are the power,” Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who was Lukashenko’s main election opponent, said in a video message from Lithuania, where she is in exile.

Kolesnikova has said security forces drove her to the border with Ukraine to try to make her leave the country, but that she tore up her passport so she couldn’t cross the border. In a statement relayed by her lawyer on Sunday, Kolsenikova urged protesters to continue.“Freedom is worth fighting for. Do not be afraid to be free,” she said. “I do not regret anything and would do the same again.”Also Sunday, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Olga Chemodanova said an investigation has been opened into the release by hackers of the personal information of more than 1,000 employees of the ministry, which runs the police forces.

Maximum pressure... has turned into maximum isolation'-Iran’s Rouhani warns of ‘crushing response’ to US sanctions declaration at UN-Tehran says Trump administration ‘isolated’ after other world powers reject American assertion that sanctions on Islamic Republic are back in force-By TOI staff and Agencies-sep 20,20-Today, 5:14 pm

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday warned the US it faces defeat after the Trump administration declared that UN sanctions are back in force against the Islamic Republic, a move rejected by other world powers.“America is approaching a certain defeat in its sanctions move … It faced defeat and negative response from the international community. We will never yield to US pressure and Iran will give a crushing response to America’s bullying,” Rouhani said during a televised cabinet meeting, according to Reuters. He added: “America’s maximum pressure against Iran, in its political and legal aspects, has turned into America’s maximum isolation.”Rouhani’s remarks echoed those of Iran’s foreign ministry-“The United States is very, very isolated in its claims,” ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said. “The whole world is saying nothing has changed.”The comments came after the Trump administration announced the so-called “snapback” of the sanctions was in effect and threatened to “impose consequences” on any UN member state that fails to comply. The sanctions in question were lifted in 2015 when Iran and six world powers — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US — reached a landmark nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. But US President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, saying the deal — negotiated by his predecessor Barack Obama — was insufficient. He also renewed and even strengthened Washington’s own sanctions. The US insists it is still a participant in the agreement that it stormed out of, but only so it can activate the snapback option, which it announced on August 20.Virtually every other Security Council member disputes Washington’s ability to execute this legal pirouette, and the UN body has not taken the measure any further.Members of the Security Council vote at United Nations headquarters on the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, July 20, 2015. (AP/Seth Wenig, File)-On Sunday, two permanent council members — France and Britain — issued a joint statement along with non-permanent member Germany saying the US’s “purported notification” was “incapable of having any legal effect.”Russia also said the US lacked legal authority.“The illegitimate initiatives and actions of the United States by definition cannot have international legal consequences for other countries,” said its foreign ministry.‘Reckless actions’Iran brushed off the move and called on the rest of the world to unite against what it called the US’s “reckless actions”.“This is all much ado about nothing, and I imagine these are the most bitter days and hours for” the United States, said Khatibzadeh.“Tehran’s message for Washington is clear. Return to the international community, to your commitments, stop rebelling and the world will accept you..US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Washington’s latest move in a statement on Saturday evening.“Today, the United States welcomes the return of virtually all previously terminated UN sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.Pompeo promised measures would be announced in the coming days against “violators” of the sanctions to ensure that “Iran does not reap the benefits of UN-prohibited activity.”US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to reporters following a meeting with members of the UN Security Council, with US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft, left, and US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook, right, at the United Nations, August 20, 2020. (Mike Segar/Pool via AP)-With around six weeks to go until the November 3 US election, Trump could unveil those measures in a speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.Iran issued a stark warning if the US follows through with the measures.“If the United States acts on these threats, directly, or with the cooperation of a handful of its puppets, it will face a serious response and be responsible for all the dangerous consequences,” its foreign ministry said.It added that Washington, by leaving the nuclear deal, has “explicitly denied itself of any rights” to use the mechanisms in agreement and UN Resolution 2231, which enshrined the nuclear accord.‘Nothing worse’In mid-August, the US suffered a resounding defeat at the Security Council when it tried to extend the embargo on conventional weapons being sent to Tehran, which was due to expire in October.Pompeo responded with an unusually vehement attack on Britain, France and Germany, accusing them of “siding with Iran’s ayatollahs” before announcing the snapback. The Trump administration, however, is acting as if the international sanctions are in place, while the rest of the international community acts as if nothing has changed.Washington is hammering home that the arms embargo has been extended “indefinitely” and that many activities related to Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs are now subject to international sanctions.

Iran’s currency was at 32,000 rials to the dollar at the time of Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.

Whether sanctions are reimposed or not, we are living with utmost difficulty,” said Leila Zanganeh, a martial arts instructor.Danial Namei, an architect, seemed to care little for returning UN sanctions and doubted things could get worse.“We’ve been through difficult things and it is still ongoing. There’s nothing worse than the worst, after all,” he said.

(Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)-American intelligence reports indicate Iran has avoided strong military action against the US — despite an intense pressure campaign by Washington that has included tightening sanctions and rumored attacks on its installations — because it believes restraint will help prevent President Donald Trump’s reelection in November, according to a New York Times report. The newspaper cited several American officials and US allies who were briefed on the intel reports. It said Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is hoping for a less antagonistic US administration come January, but believes a significant conflict between the countries will bolster Trump’s odds of holding on to the presidency. The report said the Iranians believe a July explosion that damaged one of its nuclear sites in Natanz, and which foreign media reports have attributed to Israel or the US, was intended to provoke a response that would justify military strikes on the Islamic Republic. It also said that while Khamenei has forbidden serious military action, he has allowed extensive cyber activity and hacking attempts against US targets. Last week Microsoft said Iranian hackers have engaged in attacks on personal accounts of those associated with Trump and his campaign, in an effort to influence the 2020 election, though it said its security tools stopped most of the attempts.US President Donald Trump speaks at the signing ceremony of the Abraham Accords on the South Lawn of the White House September 15, 2020 in Washington, DC. (Alex Wong/Getty Images/AFP)-On Saturday Iran’s Revolutionary Guards chief said Tehran will avenge the US killing of its top commander General Qassem Soleimani in January by targeting only those involved, in an “honorable” retaliation. The guard’s website quoted Gen. Hossein Salami as saying, “Mr. Trump! Our revenge for martyrdom of our great general is obvious, serious and real.”Trump warned this week that Washington would harshly respond to any Iranian attempts to take revenge for the death of Soleimani, tweeting that “if they hit us in any way, any form, written instructions already done we’re going to hit them 1000 times harder.”The president’s warning came in response to a report that Iran was plotting to assassinate the US ambassador to South Africa in retaliation for Soleimani’s killing at Baghdad’s airport at the beginning of the year.Salami rejected the report of an Iranian plot to assassinate Ambassador Lana Marks, but made clear that Iran intends to avenge the general’s death.“Do you think we hit a female ambassador in return to our martyred brother?” the general said. “We will hit those who had direct and indirect roles. You should know that everybody who had a role in the event will be hit, and this is a serious message. We do prove everything in practice.”Senior Revolutionary Guard commander General Qassem Soleimani attends a meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (not seen) and Revolutionary Guard commanders in Tehran, Iran, September 18, 2016. On Saturday night the United States unilaterally proclaimed that UN sanctions against Iran were back in force and promised to punish those who violate them. However Washington is almost alone on the issue: all the other great powers — China, Russia and also the US’s own European allies — have challenged the claim.

Bahrain said to foil Iran-backed terror attacks on diplomats and foreigners-Saudi state TV says plot was revenge for the US killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani; report comes days after Manama signs normalization deal with Israel-By Jon Gambrell-sep 20,20-Today, 10:33 pm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Bahrain broke up a plot by militants backed by Iran to launch attacks on diplomats and foreigners in the island nation home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, just days after normalizing relations with Israel, Saudi state television and local media on the island reported Sunday.Bahrain’s Interior Ministry and its state media did not immediately acknowledge the arrests. Bahraini government officials, who routinely claim breaking up plots by militants backed by Iran, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Saudi state TV report aired footage of what appeared to be police raiding a home with a hidden passage. The footage showed assault rifles and explosives, apparently seized in the raid. A Saudi state TV reporter said those planning the attacks wanted to carry them out in revenge for the US killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani this January in a drone strike in Baghdad.Nine militants have been arrested, while another nine are believed to be in Iran, the Saudi state TV report said.Revolutionary Guard general Qassem Soleimani, center, attends a meeting with Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Revolutionary Guard commanders in Tehran, Iran, Sept. 18, 2016. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)-Iranian state media acknowledged the reports of the Bahraini arrests, but no official commented on them.Authorities uncovered the plot after finding an explosive on the street, the pro-government Bahraini newspaper Akhbar Al-Khaleej reported, citing the Interior Ministry. The ministry accused Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard of supporting the militants, who also had surveilled oil sites and military bases, the newspaper said. The militants also planned on assassinating bodyguards of Bahraini officials, the newspaper said.It wasn’t clear when the arrests took place, as the Akhbar Al-Khaleej report referred to incidents dating as far back as 2017. The newspaper linked the militants to the al-Ashtar Brigade, a Shiite group has claimed responsibility for a number of bombings and attacks in Bahrain, including two that killed police. The group has been sanctioned by the US-Bahrain is home to the 5th Fleet, which patrols the waterways of the Mideast. Officials have worried in the past that the sailors and Marines attached to the base in Manama could be targeted, as well as others who make up the 7,000 American troops there. Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the 5th Fleet, declined to comment and referred questions to the Bahraini government.Bahrain, an island kingdom off the coast of Saudi Arabia, just last week normalized relations with Israel alongside the United Arab Emirates. (SAUL LOEB / AFP)-Bahrain’s Shiite majority long has accused its Sunni rulers of treating them like second-class citizens. They joined pro-democracy activists in demanding more political freedoms in 2011, as Arab Spring protests swept the wider Middle East. Saudi and Emirati troops ultimately helped violently put down the demonstrations.Bahrain promised change after the protests. But since April 2016, Bahrain has engaged in a new crackdown on dissent, overturning reforms that blocked civilians from being tried in military courts. It has shut down political parties, arrested political activists and forced others into exile. Militant groups like the al-Ashtar Brigade have launched small, sporadic attacks amid that crackdown.

Iran, Russia pan ‘illegitimate, reckless’ US claim UN sanctions back in force-Tehran’s rial drops to new low as Moscow says Washington’s ‘theatrics don’t correspond to reality’; White House isolated in its unilateral assertion measures have snapped back-By Agencies-sep 20,20-Today, 10:50 am

Iran on Sunday called on the rest of the world to unite against US “reckless actions,” after Washington unilaterally declared UN sanctions against the Islamic republic were back in force.Meanwhile the the local currency dropped down to its lowest level ever on Sunday, at 272,500 to the US dollar at money exchange shops across Tehran. The rial has lost more than 30 percent of its value to the dollar since June as sweeping US sanctions on Iran continue to crush its ability to sell oil globally. Iran’s currency was at 32,000 rials to the dollar at the time of Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which was signed by the Obama administration but which the Trump administration pulled the US from.“We expect the international community and all the countries in the world to stand against these reckless actions by the regime in the White House and speak in one voice,” foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a news conference in Tehran. The Iranian government spokesman said the snapback sanctions have only happened in “the fantastical world” of the Trump administration. He said the US stands on the wrong side of history. “They are attempting to make everyone believe it, but nobody is buying it except for themselves.“It is a television show whose sole presenter, viewers and those cheering it on are Mr. Pompeo himself and a handful of others,” the spokesman said, referring to the US secretary of state. He added that “the United States is very, very isolated in its claims. The whole world is saying nothing has changed.”The Russian foreign ministry also condemned the unilateral declaration by the United States as “illegitimate” and “unacceptable.”“The illegitimate initiatives and actions of the United States by definition cannot have international legal consequences for other countries,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.Russia, a key ally of Iran, accused Washington of putting on a “theatrical performance” and insisted that the US statements “do not correspond to reality. It accused the US of “trying to force everyone to wear virtual reality goggles” and accept its version of events, adding: “The world is not an American computer game.”Washington’s defiance has dealt a “serious blow to the authority of the UN Security Council” and showed “open contempt for its decisions and for international law as a whole,” the ministry said. “This is unacceptable, and not only for us, but for other members of the Security Council too.”Russia said it “fully supports” the position of the majority of Security Council members that the US moves are “legally and procedurally null and void.”The United States unilaterally proclaimed on Saturday that UN sanctions against Iran were back in force and promised to punish those who violate them, in a move that risked increasing Washington’s isolation and international tensions.“Today, the United States welcomes the return of virtually all previously terminated UN sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.According to him, the measures were “back in effect” from 8:00 p.m. Washington time. The administration of US President Donald Trump also promised to “impose consequences” on any UN member state which does not comply with the sanctions, even though the United States is one of the only countries in the world which believes they are in force.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during a joint statement to the press with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after their meeting, in Jerusalem, August 24, 2020. (Debbie Hill/Pool via AP)-The threat is formidable: those deemed to be in defiance by Washington will be denied access to the US financial system and markets.“If UN member states fail to fulfill their obligations to implement these sanctions, the United States is prepared to use our domestic authorities to impose consequences for those failures and ensure that Iran does not reap the benefits of UN-prohibited activity,” Pompeo stated. He promised that measures would be announced in the coming days against “violators.”With 45 days to go until the November 3 election, Trump could unveil those measures during his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. However, the US is almost alone on the issue: all other major powers — China, Russia and also Washington’s own European allies — have challenged the claim.“Any decision or action taken with a view to re-installing [the sanctions] would be incapable of legal effect,” France, Britain and Germany said in a joint letter sent Friday to the Security Council and of which AFP obtained a copy.In this photo released by the official website of the office of the Iranian Presidency, President Hassan Rouhani, right, welcomes Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi for their meeting in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 (Iranian Presidency Office via AP)-The Americans themselves realize the statement is a “false claim,” Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Saturday. In mid-August, the US suffered a resounding defeat at the UN Security Council when it tried to extend the embargo on conventional weapons being sent to Tehran, which was due to expire in October.Pompeo made an unusually vehement attack on France, Britain and Germany, accusing them of “siding with Iran’s ayatollahs,” and on August 20 announced the controversial “snapback,” which aimed to reestablish all sanctions against Tehran a month later. The sanctions were lifted in 2015 when Iran signed on to an international agreement not to seek to build nuclear weapons. But Trump said that the landmark accord, negotiated by his predecessor Barack Obama, was insufficient and withdrew the US from the agreement in 2018. He then renewed and even strengthened Washington’s bilateral sanctions.US President Donald Trump speaks with reporters as he walks to Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, in Washington. It’s like pulling a trigger and no bullet coming out.”Another diplomat deplored the “unilateral” US act, saying that “Russia and China are sitting, happy, eating popcorn, watching” the “huge destabilizing fallout” between Washington and its European partners. But if the United States were to carry out the threat of secondary. sanctions, tensions could continue to spiral.

US, UAE said holding ‘decisive’ meeting with Sudan over Israel normalization-Report says Khartoum asking for billions in economic assistance in return for agreement with Jerusalem; if demands met, announcement could come within days-By TOI staff and Jacob Magid-SEP 20,20-Today, 8:37 pm

Sudanese officials are holding a “decisive” meeting with counterparts from the US and UAE over signing a normalization deal with Israel, the Walla news site reported Sunday.Sudan has been among a number of countries touted as possibly inking a deal with Israel, following the diplomatic move made by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on Tuesday.According to the report, which was also published in English on the Axios website, Sudan is asking for a wide-reaching economic support package, and if an agreement is reached, could announce a deal with Israel in the coming days.Sudan is reportedly asking for oil and wheat shipments worth $1.2 billion to cope with recent devastating floods, a $2 billion grant to deal with Sudan’s economic crisis and a commitment of economic support from the US and the UAE over the next three years.A man wades through a flooded road in the town of Shaqilab, about 15 miles (25 km) southwest of the capital, Khartoum, Sudan, Monday, Aug. 31, 2020. (AP Photo/Marwan Ali)-According to the report, the US is being represented at the talks by White House National Security Council’s senior director for the Gulf and North Africa, Gen. Miguel Correa. The UAE is being represented by national security adviser Tahnoon Bin Zayed.Israeli officials have long expressed a wish for better relations with Khartoum, citing its importance in the region as well as its geographic location. The nation was the birthplace of the Arab League’s 1967 policy refusing negotiations or normalization with Israel, but in recent years it has seemingly softened its stance, moving out of Iran’s sphere of influence as it has desperately sought the removal of US sanctions as a supporter of Hamas, Hezbollah and other terror groups. However, removal from the terrorism list is also dependent on completion of a compensation agreement for victims of the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. A tentative deal struck several months ago still awaits finalization.Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Haidar Badawi Sadiq was fired on August 19, 2020, a day after expressing support for peace with Israel. (YouTube screenshot)-In August, Sudan’s foreign ministry spokesman, Haidar Badawi Sadiq, told Sky News Arabia that Khartoum “aspires towards a peace agreement with Israel… a relationship of equals built upon Khartoum’s interests.”Those remarks were quickly welcomed by Jerusalem. But hours later Sudan’s acting foreign minister denied knowledge of peace talks with Israel, and said Sadiq had not been authorized to comment on the issue. The spokesman was fired for the comments, but said afterward that he did not regret making them. The foreign ministers of the UAE and Bahrain signed the so-called Abraham Accords in a White House ceremony with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. The only Arab states Israel previously had official ties with were Egypt and Jordan. The agreements do not address the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the UAE, Bahrain and other Arab countries support the Palestinians, the Trump administration has persuaded the two countries not to let that conflict keep them from having normal relations with Israel.Numerous Arab states have been named as potential candidates to follow the UAE and Bahrain in agreeing to establish ties with Israel, including Morocco, Sudan and Oman.US President Donald Trump, center, with from left, Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, during the Abraham Accords signing ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, September 15, 2020, in Washington. (Alex Brandon/AP)On Friday, US President Donald Trump, after meeting with the son of Kuwait’s ruling emir, said that the country will likely normalize relations with Israel in the near future. The Kuwaitis “are so excited that we signed the first two countries and I think they’ll end up fairly quickly being a part of it,” Trump said at a White House press briefing after he bestowed a top honor on Kuwait’s Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, which his eldest son accepted on his behalf.Trump reiterated his claim that a number of Arab states were eager to ink deals with Israel following the historic accords with the UAE and Bahrain.“I have, I would say, seven or eight countries that want to be a part of it,” Trump said. “Nobody thought this would happen and not only is it happening, it’s happening rather easily.”“I had two calls this morning with countries that want to know, ‘When can we go into the deal?’ It’s not that we’re giving them anything. They want security, they want peace, and they’re really tired of fighting,” Trump said.He acknowledged that he had only discussed the issue “very briefly” with the visiting Kuwaiti sheikh before adding that the “whole thing is now a beautiful puzzle that’s coming together nicely. The Middle East is straightening out with all that’s happening.”Last month, unnamed senior Kuwaiti officials rejected the possibility of normalizing ties with Israel, telling the local al-Qabas newspaper that despite warming ties between the Gulf states and Jerusalem, it had no interest in changing its longstanding regional policies.Regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia meanwhile has remained non-committal, reiterating its support for the Arab Peace Initiative, a Saudi-backed proposal from 2002 that promises Israel full diplomatic ties with the entire Muslim world in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 border lines. The Saudi Arabian royal family is reportedly split over possible future ties with Israel following landmark agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.According to the report, King Salman bin Abdulaziz has come into conflict with his son, de facto leader crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, with the latter said to be in favor of the move.Qatar’s ambassador to the US said on Wednesday that his nation, which is located in the Gulf but frequently at odds with its neighbors, has no problem normalizing relations with Israel, but will not do so before a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is reached. Qatar is a frequent interlocutor between Israel and the Hamas terror group.Trump said after Tuesday’s signing ceremony that he expected “seven or eight or nine” more countries to normalize ties with Israel, including Saudi Arabia.

Top Fatah official talks of ‘Zionist territorial designs from Nile to Euphrates’-Railing against Israel’s peace deals with UAE and Bahrain, Azzam Al-Ahmad claims Palestinians are defending all Arab nations from Israel’s expansion plots-By TOI staff-sep 20,20-Today, 10:14 am

A senior Palestinian official has said the Palestinian people protect Arab nations from “the Zionist territorial designs from the Nile to the Euphrates.”Speaking last week in criticism of the decision by the United Arab Emirates to normalize ties with Israel, Fatah Central Committee Member Azzam Al-Ahmad told Qatar’s Al-Araby TV: “We hope that the people [of the UAE and Bahrain] will restrain [their leaders] and make them reconsider what they have signed. Do not destroy yourselves and the future of the entire Arab nation.”His comments were provided and translated over the weekend by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).He explained: “We the Palestinians are defending all of you — we are defending Mecca, Baghdad, Cairo, Amman and Damascus. This is our destiny as Palestinians.Fatah Central Committee Member Azzam Al-Ahmad: The Palestinians Defend the Entire Arab Nation from the Zionist Designs to Expand from the Nile to the Euphrates pic.twitter.com/rxWSQwngf— MEMRI (@MEMRIReports) September 18, 2020-“We are the sentinels in Jerusalem who defend it against the Zionist territorial designs from the Nile to the Euphrates.”Al-Ahmad vowed to “continue to serve as the spearhead in the confrontation against the American administration and the Zionist movement. We… will continue to persevere and fight. We have been fighting for over 100 years in defense of the Arab nation and the Islamic and Christian holy sites.”The Palestinian Authority has lambasted the deal, accusing Gulf states of betrayal and of a “stab in the back” of Palestinians.A coalition representing a wide swath of Palestinian factions — including both Fatah and Hamas — called for a “day of Intifada-like rejection” of the normalization deal on Tuesday. In response, several sporadic demonstrations were held across the West Bank and Gaza, each numbering a few hundred. The Palestinians have found themselves increasingly isolated in their efforts to cut Israel off from the Arab world.
The PA was unable to muster much support during a summit of the 22-member Arab League earlier in the month, with Arab foreign ministers failing to back a Palestinian push to the normalization deal.
