Mothers send pictures of fentanyl victims to Justin Trudeau-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

When Irene Patterson's son Roger Wong didn't show up for a baseball game the two had planned to attend in June, she became worried. He was battling addiction issues but was six-months sober at the time. Still, his absence still raised red flags for his mother. She eventually went to the police station with Wong's then-girlfriend, Evonne, and reported him missing."The policeman said 'go sit down,' and I said, 'Oh, Evonne, this is good. They've got him," Patterson told CBC Toronto. "But then they took us into a room and the man said, 'I can tell you that your son is dead.'"Wong was found dead from a fentanyl overdose in a downtown parking lot."That was the moment my life ended," the Toronto mom recalled. Now, his 61-year-old mother is joining a campaign called Moms Stop The Harm to raise awareness about Canada's opioid crisis because "my son is not a statistic," she wrote in an email. The group sends pictures of the loved ones they've lost to the prime minister in an attempt to show the human side of the opioid crisis."Every day you see the statistics and all of that, but I just thought people should see what's left behind: the devastation, friends, loved ones, people that loved him," she said.About 500 moms so far have sent in portraits asking the government to increase resources to fight fentanyl addiction.'Compassion instead of judgement'-Tara Gomes, a drug policy research scientist at St. Michael's Hospital, says this initiative by the mothers is an "important and brave" step in fighting overdoses. The biggest hurdle to battling the crisis, she says, is stigma."A lot of people are not appreciating that everyone who dies from or are affected by overdoses are friends, family members. They have parents, they have children. It doesn't just impact their lives, it affects all of our society," Gomes told CBC Toronto. She believes there have been huge strides in the right direction from policy makers in the last year."Governments are starting to understand that this is a mental issue and not some shortfall in a few people lives," she said. "We need to make sure enough resources are going towards it to make sure we treat people with opioid addiction with compassion and respect instead of with judgement."She wants resources to be directed towards supervised injection sites and controlled substance use to first curb the number of Canadians dying from opioid overdoses. Then, she says, the government and the health community can address the issue with a long-term lens. For Patterson, it's too late for her son but maybe not for someone else's child."Roger's gone. There is nothing I can do to bring him back, but I can help someone else. Together, we can help somebody else's someone. Even just one," she said.

POISONED WATERS

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

EZEKIEL 32:6-9
6  I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.
7  And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
8  All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.
9  I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

REVELATION 8:8-11
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.(poisoned)

REVELATION 16:3-7
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.(enviromentalists won't like this result)
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they(False World Church and Dictator) have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Cleanup underway in Squamish, B.C., following diesel spill-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

Jason Ross hopes the rainbow film of diesel he can see sitting on the surface of the pond next to his Squamish, B.C. home will be sucked up before it sinks into the water system. The District of Squamish is responding to a diesel spill in the south end of the district's downtown area. The first report of the spill was received late Wednesday afternoon.According to the district's website, the source of the spill is believed to be an underground tank on a property located on Main Street and Cleveland Avenue.Gary Buxton, the general manager for community planning and infrastructure for the district, said Ministry of Environment crews were on the scene within hours to help with the cleanup, however he believes some of the fuel did pass into a nearby estuary."It's significantly small, but we don't want that out in the marine environment," he said.A vacuum truck is being used to suck the contaminants from the surface to prevent polluted water from entering the local estuary and storm water system.Ross says he lives right next to the pond where the spill happened and he is concerned about fuel entering the estuary and eventually into Howe Sound.Strong fumes-He said the fumes from the spill are strong and distressing for people walking or living in the area."I know others that were exposed and they said they had a hard time breathing," said Ross.Local resident Jan Strachurl was walking his dog on Wednesday when he noticed the fumes."I was really concerned about it," he said.He says the nearby estuary is a protected environment."So for something like that, to me, was a surprise," he said about the spill. "That shouldn't really happen."The Ministry of the Environment and the Provincial Emergency Program are involved in the clean up process.According to the ministry, Squamish has retained the services of an emergency response contractor to assist in the cleanup. The district says because the fuel has mixed with rainwater, it is unable to say how much leaked.

Israel PM says security must come first in any peace plan-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he has made clear to the U.S. that Israel's security concerns must come first as the White House tries to restart a peace process with the Palestinians. His comments came after Israeli news reports claiming to detail the peace plan under development. At a weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said "we heard plenty of speculation this weekend" about President Donald Trump's peace efforts. He then declined to comment, saying only that "my position on this plan will be determined according to Israel's security and national interests."Trump took office with hopes of forging what he calls the "ultimate deal" between Israelis and Palestinians. The last round of peace talks collapsed in 2014.The Associated Press.

EU keeps former Soviet states at arm's length By Andrew Rettman-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 17. Nov, 21:17-The EU aims to weaken the enlargement hopes of former Soviet states at a summit next week. It also aims to lend weight to Azerbaijan's view of a conflict with Armenia.EU states plan to "acknowledge the European aspirations and European choice of the partners concerned," according to a draft summit declaration, seen by EUobserver. But they plan to tell Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine that their association treaties will not lead to membership, major financial assistance, the right to work in the EU, or military support "in [the] context" of a Dutch agreement. The EU and the Netherlands agreed to put the brakes on the association project in December 2016 after Dutch people voted No to the Ukraine treaty in a referendum. That referendum was non-binding, but an EU diplomat said it still governed foreign policy today."The Dutch, backed by Germans and the French, refused to put into the Eastern Partnership declaration even the wording from the association agreements on recognising Eastern Partnership countries as 'European'," the diplomat said.Their attitude has angered Kiev."What Ukraine ultimately wants is a simple message: 'Once you're ready - you're in'. Our task would be to get ready," Kostiantyn Yelisieiev, an aide to Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, said in EUobserver in the run-up to the summit.A compromise formula, "recognising" some Eastern Partnership countries' "European aspirations" might be inserted into the final text, the EU diplomat said.-Conflict zone-The twice-yearly Eastern Partnership summit takes place in Brussels next Friday (24 November). The draft declaration said EU overtures toward the east were "not directed against anyone", but the EU's offer, four years ago, of an association treaty to Ukraine helped to set off a revolution, which led to Russia's subsequent invasion. The EU summit comes amid regular exchange of fire, including artillery, between Ukraine and Russia-controlled forces in east Ukraine. It also comes amid frequent fire between Azerbaijan and Armenian forces in Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh region. The draft declaration leant toward Azerbaijan's view of the conflict. It said: "The European Union remains committed in its support to the territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty of all its partners."This lumped together Nagorno-Karabakh with Russia's conflicts in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. It depicted Nagorno-Karabakh as an artificial occupation by Armenia, while dropping previous references to Armenian people's right to self-determination.-Eastern Partners-Azerbaijan's leader, Ilham Alyiev, who sells oil and gas to the EU, had not confirmed by this weekend if he would attend the summit.Alexander Lukashenka, the autocratic Belarusian leader, had also not confirmed what would be his first visit to the EU capital. The draft declaration said the EU 28 and the six other leaders "recommit themselves to strengthening democracy, rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms".It said these were "at the heart of the Eastern Partnership", even though Alyiev and Lukashenka are notorious human rights abusers. The Alyiev regime is also known for corruption and for a recent purge of gay men.But the draft declaration contained only boiler plate statements on corruption and made no mention of LGBTI rights.Belarus has the least developed EU relations out of the group, though the two sides are in talks on a visa facilitation deal.Armenia step-The summit is to see a step forward in EU-Armenia relations after Armenia leapt backward three years ago.Armenia had been due to sign an association treaty with the EU along with Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, but refused to do so under Russian pressure.Friday's meeting is to see the EU sign a Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement with Armenia - a stripped-down version of the original treaty. It will also plant a small seed by establishing an Eastern Partnership European School. The secondary-level school, in Tbilisi, is to promote, among other things, "better understanding of the European Union".

EU leaders make pledge on social issues after populist backlash By Lisbeth Kirk and Eszter Zalan-EUOBSERVER

Gothenburg, 17. Nov, 19:10-In an effort to tackle rising populism in the European Union, EU leaders gathered on Friday (17 November) in Gothenburg to strengthen the social aspect of the bloc to protect workers, and help the underprivileged. In a formal ceremony, the presidents of the European Commission and Parliament, Jean-Claude Juncker and Antonio Tajani, with Estonian prime minister Juri Ratas in the name of the EU Council, signed a so-called 'European Pillar of Social Rights'.In the document, EU leaders agree 20 principles, ranging from gender equality to fair wages to assisting the homeless. Social policies vary widely across Europe, and it will remain in member states' competences.Friday's meeting was to show that the EU has received the message of voters, after the Brexit referendum in the UK and after populist parties gained strength across Europe in the wake of the financial crisis, and will now focus on what matters to the daily lives of citizens."If we allow unemployment to grow due to unfair practices, if jobs are left vacant because young people lack proper education or parents haven't received retraining, then social discord in our countries will grow," the host, Swedish prime minister Stefan Loefven said."After challenges and uncertainty in the EU in recent years, I firmly believe that the best way to increase trust in the EU and in its institutions is that to bring about real improvement in people's daily lives," he said in a joint press conference with Juncker and European Council president Donald Tusk."Today we have shown this does not need to be the case ... Today has shown, there is a clear commitment to put the best interest of our citizens in the heart of the EU agenda," Loefven, a social-democrat, added. The leaders met in a town hall format with labour and business representatives and shared ideas. Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel was absent due to coalition talks back home.-Rules from above? Loefven said that the European semester, the EU scheme to monitor and harmonise member states' economic policies, gives a chance for countries to coordinate their social policies as well, but did not say if it will become a new benchmark for EU countries in the process. But the Commission wants to include the social pillar into the semester."We from the Commission, we are going to integrate this social pillar in the European semester," Marianne Thyssen, the commissioner in charge of social affairs and employment, told EUobserver at the end of the summit."We will also use our funds and we will fight in the next multi-annual financial framework [seven-year EU budget] to have enough money available to support member states for the reforms that are necessary," she said.Thyssen commended that member states took the initiative on the discussion on the social pillar."We have a common proclamation that is also a commitment from the member states. It is not just Europe that has to say what has to happen. It is not the commission that is saying to all the member states what they have to do. Everybody will do its bit," she said.During the summit, representatives of trade unions, employers and civil society also took part in three working groups, together with the prime ministers and presidents."This is the first, this is a beginning. The last [social summit] was 20 years ago," explained Marianne Thyssen, who was a member of the European Parliament then.Referring to the economic semester, she said: "We look 'where do we have to make a remark', what is exceptional in this member state, or going very well - or going very badly.""The semester is a tool for dialogue. It is not just a tool for [the] punishment of state … it is a real dialogue. Giving them support and motivating them to do more where they can do better," she added.Orban's way-Not everybody in Gothenburg pledged to let their social policy be formed by Brussels, however.Hungary's prime minister Viktor Orban said that it was always good to give each other ideas but reminded that: "There is a model in Sweden. We will surely see a French model coming from [French president] Macron and we, Hungarians believe our model has worked for us through the crisis."One of the key issues is mobility and flexibility. The president of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson, recalled that Nordic countries have the "highest low [minimum] salary in the whole world, and at the same are the most competitive countries"."It is only possible because of flexibility. We let people move from one job to another," he added. He noted that people change jobs and move much more often than a generation ago. The average European worker has gone from having a job for life to having more than ten in a career. The social summit is the second in a list of total 13 meetings listed in the so-called Leaders Agenda that was adopted by EU leaders in October.

Britain to submit 'Brexit bill' proposal before December EU meeting-[Reuters]-By William James-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will submit proposals on how to settle its divorce bill with the European Union before an EU summit next month and is expected to negotiate hard, finance minister Philip Hammond said on Sunday. The EU told Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday that there was more work to be done to unlock the Brexit talks, repeating its early December deadline for her to flesh out Britain's opening offer on the financial settlement."We will make our proposals to the European Union in time for the Council," Hammond told the BBC, referring to the Dec. 14-15 meeting of EU heads of government. He was speaking three days before he sets out Britain's budget plan, where he will have to find room within tight fiscal constraints to help May convince voters that the Conservative government is tackling Britain's domestic problems at the same time as negotiating its exit from the EU.Last week, May met fellow EU leaders to try to break a deadlock over how much Britain will pay on leaving the bloc, an issue threatening to derail British hopes for a negotiated exit and an agreement on a new trading relationship by March 2019.May has signaled she would increase an initial offer that is estimated at some 20 billion euros ($24 billion) - about a third of what Brussels wants. But Hammond, who has been criticized by supporters of Brexit for being too conciliatory towards Brussels and lobbying for a "softer" exit, said Britain would take a tough stance about how much it owes."There are some things that we're very clear we do owe under the treaties, other things where we dispute the amounts or even whether something should be included," Hammond said in a separate interview with ITV television."Of course we'll negotiate hard to get the very best deal for the British taxpayer."Asked about the prospect of Brexit without a trade deal, Hammond said he was "increasingly confident" that an agreement could be reached because it was in the interests of both parties.Despite scepticism in Brussels over the tight timetable, May and her chief negotiator David Davis have been clear they want to have a full post-Brexit free trade deal sealed by the time Britain leaves. However, Hammond set out a softer stance on the timing of the trade deal."We hope that it will be agreed, certainly in principle, that the big elements of it will be agreed before March 2019 so that everybody knows where we are going," he told ITV.(Reporting by William James; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Pope devotes Mass to poor, calls indifference a 'great sin'-[The Canadian Press]YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

VATICAN CITY — Celebrating Mass with poor people in the splendor of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis on Sunday denounced those who dismiss poverty as "not my business" and defined indifference to the needy as a "great sin."Later, the pontiff expressed particular concern for those impoverished by war. After Mass, the pope lunched with some 1,500 poor people from Italy, Poland, France and elsewhere as the Catholic Church marked its first World Day of the Poor, an event created by Francis to draw attention to those living on the margins of society."To do no wrong is not enough," Francis declared in his homily. Not using our lives to help others is a "great sin where the poor are concerned," Francis said. "Here it has a specific name: indifference. It is when we say, 'That doesn't concern me. It's not my business, it's society's problem.'"It appeared to be a lunch the pope enjoyed immensely.Francis laughed when a guest presented him with a scarf in the red-and-yellow colours of local soccer team Roma, which beat hometown rival Lazio a day earlier. He beamed as waiters served the poor, seated at his long table, plates filled with gnocchetti sardi, a shell-shaped pasta, topped with tomato sauce.Elbow-to-elbow with his guests, Francis tucked a cloth napkin into his white cassock and ate with gusto.A second course of veal and greens, a dessert of tiramisu and cups of coffee to top the meal off were also on the menu.Other guests dined at round tables, covered with white cloths and decorated with a potted cyclamen, in the hall where the pope on Wednesdays holds his public audience.Francis elaborated on the indifference theme-"It is when we turn away from a brother or sister in need, when we change channels as soon as a disturbing question comes up, when we grow indignant at evil but do nothing about it," he said. "God will not ask us if we felt righteous indignation, but whether we did some good."The poor, those who the world views as having "little value, they are the ones who open to us the way to heaven. They are our 'passport to paradise,'" Francis said.___Frances D'Emilio, The Associated Press.

Argentina says it may have received signals from missing sub-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina's Navy detected seven brief satellite calls Saturday that officials believe may have come from a submarine with 44 crew members that hadn't been heard from in three days. The communication attempts "indicate that the crew is trying to re-establish contact, so we are working to locate the source of the emissions," the Navy said on its Twitter account, adding that the calls lasted between four and 36 seconds.Argentine authorities clarified that it has not been confirmed the calls came from the submarine, the ARA San Juan, though that is the working hypothesis.Earlier Saturday, Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said the area being searched off the country's southern Atlantic coast has been doubled as concerns about the fate of the submarine and its crew grew."We are not discounting any hypothesis," Balbi said, adding that possibilities to explain the submarine's disappearance include "a problem with communications" or with its power system.Authorities last had contact with the German-built, diesel-electric sub on Wednesday as it was on a voyage from the extreme southern port of Ushuaia to Mar del Plata.Argentine President Mauricio Macri said in a tweet that the country will use "all resources national and international that are necessary to find the submarine."Pledges of help came from Chile, Uruguay, Peru and Brazil, as well as the United States, which sent a NASA scientific aircraft and a Navy plane. Britain was sending a polar exploration vessel, the HMS Protector, which British officials said should arrive Sunday. The U.S. Navy ordered its Undersea Rescue Command based in San Diego, California to deploy to Argentina to support the search for the submarine. The command includes a remotely operated vehicle and vessels capable of rescuing people from bottomed submarines.Admiral Gabriel Gonzalez, chief of the Mar del Plata Naval Base, said they are co-ordinating "with units from the United Kingdom and the United States." Britain and Argentina fought a war in 1982 over the Falklands Islands, which are called the Malvinas in Argentina.Relatives of the crew members gathered at the Mar del Plata Naval Base in the hopes of hearing news about their loved ones."We feel anguish. We are reserved but will not lose our hope that they will return," Marcela Moyano, wife of machinist Hernan Rodriguez, told television network TN.She said she spoke with her husband when the submarine departed and is still sending him WhatsApp messages, though he has not responded. From the Vatican, Argentine Pope Francis said he was making "fervent prayers" for the crew. The Associated Press.

Stormy weather complicates search for missing Argentine submarine-[Reuters]-By Marcos Brindicci and Luc Cohen-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina/BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - A storm on Sunday complicated the search for an Argentine navy submarine missing in the South Atlantic, as authorities worked to verify that recent satellite calls, which raised hopes of finding the 44 crew members alive, came from the vessel.U.S. airplanes carrying subsurface search specialists arrived in Argentina to help hunt for the ARA San Juan, which was 432 km (268 miles) off Argentina's coast when its location was last known early on Wednesday, said navy Admiral Gabriel Gonzalez.More than a dozen boats and aircraft from Argentina, the United States, Britain, Chile and Brazil had joined the effort.Authorities have been scanning the sea from above as waves of up to 8 meters (26 ft) and winds of up to 40 knots made the search difficult for boats, Gonzalez told reporters."Unfortunately these conditions are expected to remain for the next 48 hours," Gonzalez said from the Mar del Plata naval base, where the submarine had been heading toward before vanishing. The defense ministry has said the submarine appeared to have tried to make contact through seven failed satellite calls on Saturday between late morning and early afternoon. On Sunday afternoon, Gonzalez said it was still not clear whether the calls were sent by or to the vessel."We are continuing to investigate, ... trying to determine with confidence that they came from the submarine, and were not calls to the submarine," Gonzalez said. The government was working with Iridium Communications Inc to trace the location of the calls. The U.S.-based company did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of normal business hours.A search of 80 percent of the area initially targeted for the operation turned up no sign of the submarine on the ocean's surface, navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said, but the crew should have ample supplies of food and oxygen. The navy said an electrical outage on the diesel-electric-propelled vessel might have downed its communications. Protocol calls for submarines to surface if communication is lost.Crew members' relatives gathered at the Mar del Plata naval base, where the submarine had once been expected to arrive around noon on Sunday from Ushuaia. However, it would not be unusual for storms to cause delays, Balbi said.Argentine-born Pope Francis mentioned the missing vessel in his Sunday noon prayer."I also pray for the men of the crew of the Argentine military submarine which is missing," the pontiff said. The dramatic search has captivated the nation of 44 million, which recently mourned the loss of five citizens killed when a truck driver plowed through a bicycle path in New York City. The ARA San Juan was inaugurated in 1983, making it the newest of the three submarines in the navy's fleet. Built in Germany by Nordseewerke, it underwent midlife maintenance in 2008 in Argentina.(Additional reporting by Maximiliano Rizzi in Buenos Aires, Mitra Taj in Santiago, Keith Coffman in Washington, D.C. and Philip Pullela in Rome; Editing by Mark Potter and Lisa Von Ahn)

Lebanon's Hariri to visit Egypt on Tuesday: Hariri's office-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Saad al-Hariri, who announced his resignation as Lebanese prime minister in a televised broadcast from Saudi Arabia on Nov. 4, will visit Egypt on Tuesday to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Hariri's office said on Sunday.Hariri has since Saturday been in Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron, and has said he will return to Lebanon by Wednesday for its Independence Day celebrations.Lebanese President Michel Aoun has said he will not accept Hariri's resignation until it is delivered in person and all sides in Beirut have called for his speedy return.A leader in Hariri's Future Movement had earlier told Reuters Hariri would visit Egypt on Monday. The resignation sparked a political crisis in Lebanon and put it on the front line of a regional power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran.Hariri criticized Iran and its ally Hezbollah, which is in Lebanon's coalition government, in his resignation statement, and said he feared assassination. Apart from a brief trip to Abu Dhabi, he remained in Saudi Arabia until he flew to France. His stay in the kingdom led to accusations from Lebanese officials and politicians that Saudi Arabia had coerced him to resign, which he and Riyadh denied. On Friday, Hariri tweeted that his presence there was for "consultations on the future of the situation in Lebanon and its relations with the surrounding Arab region".On Sunday, Arab League foreign ministers held an emergency meeting in Cairo, requested by Saudi Arabia, to discuss ways to confront Iran and Hezbollah over their role in the region. In a statement afterwards, the ministers accused Hezbollah of supporting terrorism in Arab countries.Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil did not attend.(Reporting by Laila Bassam; Writing by Sarah Dadouch; Editing by Angus McDowall, Kevin Liffey and Adrian Croft)

Israeli minister reveals covert contacts with Saudi Arabia-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli cabinet minister said on Sunday that Israel has had covert contacts with Saudi Arabia amid common concerns over Iran, a first disclosure by a senior Israeli official of such contacts. In an interview on Army Radio, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz was asked why Israel was hiding its ties with Saudi Arabia.Steinitz replied: "We have ties that are indeed partly covert with many Muslim and Arab countries, and usually (we are) the party that is not ashamed."It's the other side that is interested in keeping the ties quiet. With us, usually, there is no problem, but we respect the other side's wish, when ties are developing, whether it's with Saudi Arabia or with other Arab countries or other Muslim countries, and there is much more ... (but) we keep it secret."(Writing by Ori Lewis; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

Saudi Arabia and Arab allies accuse Iran and Hezbollah of interference-[Reuters]-By Patrick Markey and Mohamed Abdellah-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

CAIRO (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia and other Arab foreign ministers criticized Iran and its Lebanese Shi'ite ally Hezbollah at an emergency meeting in Cairo on Sunday, warning they would not stand by in the face of Iranian interference in Arab affairs.Regional tensions have risen in recent weeks between Sunni monarchy Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite Islamist Iran over Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's surprise resignation, and an escalation in Yemen's conflict.Hariri, a Saudi ally, resigned on Nov. 4 from Riyadh, accusing Iran and Hezbollah of spreading strife. But Lebanese President Michel Aoun and other politicians accused Saudi Arabia of holding Hariri hostage and said he had been coerced into resigning. Saudi Arabia and Hariri both deny that.Hezbollah, both a military force involved in Syria's war and a political movement, is part of a Lebanese government made up of rival factions, and an ally of Aoun.Saudi Arabia also accuses Hezbollah of a role in the launch of a missile towards Riyadh from Yemen this month. Iran denies accusations that it supplies Houthi forces there."The kingdom will not stand by and will not hesitate to defend its security," Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir told the assembly."Any leniency in dealing with their policies would only encourage them more, so we must stand together," Jubeir said, referring to Iran and its regional policies. The emergency Arab foreign ministers' meeting was convened at the request of Saudi Arabia with support from the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait to discuss means of confronting Iranian intervention, Egypt's state news agency MENA said.Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit told ministers that Arab nations would raise the matter with international organizations, including the U.N. Security Council. But the assembly gave no details on what measures they would take."Iranian threats have gone beyond all limits and pushed the region into a dangerous abyss," Gheit said.Yemen's civil war pits the internationally recognized government, backed by Saudi Arabia and its allies, against the Houthis and forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh."Unfortunately countries like the Saudi regime are pursuing divisions and creating differences, and because of this they don’t see any results other than divisions," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told Iranian state media on Sunday on the sidelines of a meeting in Antalya, Turkey, with his Russian and Turkish counterparts about the Syria conflict. After French intervention, Hariri flew to France and met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Saturday. He will arrive in Cairo for a visit on Monday, a leader in his Future Movement told Reuters on Sunday.Speaking in Paris, Hariri said he would clarify his position when he returns to Beirut in the coming days. He said he would take part in Lebanese independence day celebrations, which are scheduled for Wednesday.(Additional reporting by Arwa Gaballa and Mostafa Hashem in Cairo; Sarah Dadouch and Babak Dehghanpisheh in Beirut; Editing by Mark Potter and Adrian Croft)

Arab League delivers harsh criticism of Iran, little action-[Associated Press]-HAMZA HENDAWI-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

CAIRO (AP) — In a resolution long on criticism but short on concrete steps, Arab foreign ministers who met in Cairo Sunday delivered a tirade of criticism against Iran and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah, saying Tehran was destabilizing the region. They said they planned to "brief" the U.N. Security Council on Iran's destabilizing policies in the region, particularly its support for Shiite rebels in Yemen, with a view to submit at a later stage an anti-Iran Arab resolution. In what is perhaps the only concrete measure, the ministers said Arab telecommunications satellites would ban Iranian-financed television stations for what they said was their fomenting of sectarian and ethnic tensions and because they posed a threat to Arab security. It gave no details."We are not declaring war on Iran at this stage," Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said. "We have not taken a decision to ask the Security Council to meet, but we are just briefing the council and maybe the next stage would be for us to meet and call for a Security Council meeting and submit a draft Arab resolution (against Iran)."Lebanon, where Hezbollah is a key member of a coalition government, and Iraq, a majority Shiite nation bound by close political and religious ties to Iran, stated their reservations about the harsher parts of the resolution, including one that branded Hezbollah a "terrorist" organization. The draft also blamed the Shiite group of supporting "terrorist groups" across the region and supplying them with weapons, including ballistic missiles. Both Iraq and Lebanon were represented at the meeting by senior diplomats, not their foreign ministers. The Lebanese envoy to the Arab League, Antoine Azzam, made carefully weighed comments at the meeting that reflected his country's delicate religious and ethnic balance. While not mentioning Iran by name, he said Lebanon condemned all attacks against Arab nations, but blamed exploitable inter-Arab divisions that allowed international and regional powers to promote their interests.Saudi Arabia, a Sunni powerhouse, has significantly sharpened its anti-Iran rhetoric since its forces on Nov. 4 intercepted near its capital, Riyadh, a ballistic missile fired by Shiite rebels in Yemen who are allied with the Iranians. The Saudis said the missile was Iranian-made and declared the attack an act of war by the Iranians.Iran denies arming the Yemeni rebels, known as the Houthis, who say they locally produced the missile-Saudi Arabia, through its foreign minister, asked fellow Arab nations to take a "serious and honest" stand against Iranian "aggression" and "meddling" in the internal affairs of Arab countries.Addressing the Arab foreign ministers' meeting, Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said: "Showing leniency toward Iran will not leave any Arab capital safe from those ballistic missiles.""We are obliged today to take a serious and honest stand... to counter these belligerent policies," he added. He said his country was targeted by a total of 80 ballistic missiles fired by Yemen's Shiite rebels since the kingdom in 2015 formed and led a coalition to fight them alongside forces loyal to the internationally recognized government there.Saudi Arabia, added Al-Jubeir, will not stand idly by in the face of Iran's "blatant aggression."The ministers, according to the final statement, said they supported any action to be taken by Saudi Arabia to protect its national security, within the boundaries of international legitimacy.Speaking before Al-Jubeir at the 20-minute session broadcast live, Aboul-Gheit, the Arab league chief, was just as critical of Iran as the Saudi minister. Alluding to the Nov. 4 attack, he said it delivered a message to Arab nations that their capitals were within the range of Iranian missiles."We say it in clear terms that Iranian threats have exceeded all boundaries and are pushing the region toward the abyss ... (Iran's) missile program poses a danger to the region," said Aboul-Gheit.Bahrain's foreign minister, Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, urged strong action by the Arab League against Iran. In the absence of such support, he said, his country would have no choice but to rely on the protection of its Western allies, citing the U.S. 5th Fleet headquartered in Bahrain and naval ships patrolling the Persian gulf.

Palestinians say they won't be blackmailed by U.S. move to close PLO office-[Reuters]-By Ali Sawafta and David Brunnstrom-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

RAMALLAH/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Palestinian officials expressed surprise on Saturday at a U.S. decision to close the Palestine Liberation Organization office in Washington unless the group enters peace negotiations with Israel, and said they would not surrender to blackmail.A U.S. State Department official said that under legislation passed by Congress, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson could not renew a certification that expired this month for the PLO office, "given certain statements made by the Palestinian leaders about the International Criminal Court."The law says the PLO, the main Palestinian umbrella political body, cannot operate a Washington office if it urges the ICC to prosecute Israelis for alleged crimes against Palestinians. In an address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinian Authority called on the ICC "to open an investigation and to prosecute Israeli officials for their involvement in settlement activities and aggressions against our people."The State Department official added that restrictions on the PLO in the United States, including the operation of its Washington office, could be waived after 90 days if U.S. President Donald Trump "determines the Palestinians have entered into direct, meaningful negotiations with Israel.""We are hopeful that this closure will be short-lived," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.According to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, the Palestinian presidency expressed surprise at the U.S. move, which was first reported by the Associated Press.WAFA quoted Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki as saying that Palestinian leaders would not give in to blackmail or pressure regarding the operation of the PLO office or negotiations on an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. The agency quoted a spokesman for Abbas, Nabil Abu Rdainah, expressing surprise, given that meetings between Abbas and Trump had been "characterized by full understanding of the steps needed to create a climate for resumption of the peace process."A Palestinian official who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters the State Department had informed the Palestinians of the decision on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear what effect the State Department's move might have on the Trump administration's efforts to revive peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which are led by Jared Kushner, the U.S. president's son-in-law and senior adviser.Abbas' spokesman called the U.S. move an unprecedented step in U.S.-Palestinian relations that would have serious consequences for the peace process and U.S.-Arab relations, according to WAFA.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on Saturday: "This is a matter of U.S. law. We respect the decision and look forward to continuing to work with the U.S. to advance peace and security in the region."The State Department official said the U.S. move did not amount to cutting off relations with the PLO or signal an intention to stop working with the Palestinian Authority."We remain focused on a comprehensive peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians that will resolve core issues between the parties," the official said.(Reporting by Ali Sawafta in Ramallah, Maayan Lubell in Jerusalem, and David Brunnstrom in Washington; Writing by David Brunnstrom; Editing by John Walcott and Lisa Von Ahn)

Turkish capital bans LGBT cinema, exhibitions-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The Turkish capital Ankara has banned the public showing of films and exhibitions related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, the governor's office said on Sunday, citing risks to public safety. The move is likely to deepen concern among rights activists and Turkey's Western allies about its record on civil liberties under President Tayyip Erdogan's Islamist-rooted AK Party."Starting from Nov. 18, 2017, concerning our community's public sensitivity, any events such as LGBT... cinema, theater, panels, interviews, exhibitions are banned until further notice in our province to provide peace and security," the governor's office said in a statement. It said that such exhibitions could cause different groups in society to "publicly harbor hatred and hostility" toward each other and therefore pose a risk to public safety.Authorities in Ankara had already banned a German gay film festival on Wednesday, the day before it was due to start, citing public safety and terrorism risks. In addition, gay pride parades have been banned in Istanbul for the last two years running. Unlike in many Muslim countries, homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey, but there is widespread hostility to it.Civil liberties in Turkey have become a particular concern for the West following the attempted military coup in July 2016. Since then, more than 50,000 people have been jailed pending trial on suspicion of links to the coup. Some 150,000 people have been sacked or suspended from their jobs.Human rights groups and Turkey's Western allies fear Erdogan is using the coup as a pretext to quash his opponents. Ankara says the measures are necessary, given the extent of the security threat it faces.(Reporting by Omer Berberoglu and Irem Koca; Writing by David Dolan; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Thousands celebrate Rio's gay pride parade-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 19, 2017

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Thousands of revelers are dancing on Copacabana beach to celebrate Rio de Janeiro's annual gay pride parade, despite deep funding cuts by the city.Rio de Janeiro Mayor Marcelo Crivella offered no city funding this year, but organizers say they were able to finance festivities with the support of private sector businesses and organizations. In 2016, the city funded 50 percent of the parade, which costs around $200,000 to put on.Sunday's celebrations featured dozens of Brazilian artists performing on trucks traveling down Copacabana beach.Despite its reputation as a liberal country, Brazil has some of Latin America's highest rates of violence against gay and transgender people.
