PARIS MARCH FOR MURDERED JEWISH WOMAN DRAWS THOUSANDS.
9 And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect (ISRAEL) shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.
22 They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect (ISRAEL) shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
1 CHRONICLES 17:9
9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel,(IN PALESTINE) and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more;(ISRAEL-NEVER DESTROYED-FOREVER AN EARTHLY NATION) neither shall the children of wickedness(ISHMAEL-ARAB/MUSLIMS-WORLD ISRAEL HATERS) waste them any more, as at the beginning,(ARAB/MUSLIMS ATTACK ISRAEL ON MAY 15,1948)
5 Even unto them (ISRAELIS) will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name,(ISRAEL) that shall not be cut off.
3 For the LORD shall comfort Zion:(JERUSALEM) he will comfort all her waste places;(FROM NUCLEAR WAR) and he will make her wilderness like Eden,(I BELIEVE THE EZEKIEL-4TH TEMPLE WILL BE BUILT 25 MILES FROM THE CURRENT TEMPLE MOUNT AFTER JESUS RULE FOR THE 1,000 YRS FROM JERUSALEM) and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.(PRAISE TO JESUS IN THE DESERT-COULD BE THE NEW JERUSALEM-4TH TEMPLE BUILT 25 MILES INTO THE DESERT FROM THE CURRENT TEMPLE MOUNT.SINCE EZEKIELS TEMPLE IS WAY TO BIG FOR THE CURRENT TEMPLE MOUNT)
4 Hearken unto me, my people;(ISRAEL) and give ear unto me, O my nation:(ISRAEL) for a law shall proceed from me,(JESUS IN JERUSALEM) and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.(ISRAEL AND THE WORLD)
28 And when these things begin to come to pass,(ALL THE PROPHECY SIGNS FROM THE BIBLE) then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption (RAPTURE) draweth nigh.
29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree,(ISRAEL) and all the trees;(ALL INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES)
30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.(ISRAEL LITERALLY BECAME AND INDEPENDENT COUNTRY JUST BEFORE SUMMER IN MAY 14,1948.)
3 A fire devoureth (ATOMIC BOMB) before them;(RUSSIAN-ARAB-MUSLIM ARMIES AGAINST ISRAEL) and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(ATOMIC BOMB AFFECT)
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet,(DISOLVED FROM ATOMIC BOMB) and their eyes shall consume away in their holes,(DISOLVED FROM ATOMIC BOMB) and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.(DISOLVED FROM ATOMIC BOMB)(BECAUSE NUKES HAVE BEEN USED ON ISRAELS ENEMIES)(GOD PROTECTS ISRAEL AND ALWAYS WILL)
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)(THIS IS AN ATOMIC BOMB EFFECT)
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven;(FROM ATOMIC BOMBS) and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
And here are the bounderies of the land that Israel will inherit either through war or peace or God in the future. God says its Israels land and only Israels land. They will have every inch God promised them of this land in the future.

8:18 pm-Paris march for murdered Jewish woman draws thousands-Several thousand people took part in a silent march in Paris on Wednesday in memory of an 85-year-old Jewish woman, killed in a grisly attack considered anti-Semitic.The leaders of several political parties, including far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen, took part in the march for Mireille Knoll, whose partly burned body was found in her Paris home at the weekend.— AFP.8:13 pm-Pentagon confirms senior Al-Qaeda terrorist killed in Libya strike-A high-ranking Al-Qaeda operative and another jihadist were killed in a US air strike in Libya, the Pentagon confirms-The March 24 strike near Ubari in southern Libya killed “two Al-Qaeda terrorists, including Musa Abu Dawud, a high ranking Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) official,” the US military’s Africa Command says in a statement.Officials say the strike had been coordinated with the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.“Dawud trained AQIM recruits in Libya for attack operations in the region,” the statement read. “He provided critical logistics support, funding and weapons to AQIM, enabling the terrorist group to threaten and attack US and Western interests in the region.”— AFP.-7:57 pm-Paris Jewish student group office vandalized with anti-Israel graffiti-Vandals have scrawled anti-Israel and anti-Semitic graffiti and ransacked the offices of a Jewish student group at a Paris university, on the same day that marches are being held around France to protest anti-Semitism.Sacha Ghozlan, president of the French Jewish Students Union, told The Associated Press that the damage was inflicted Wednesday at the group’s facilities at the Pantheon-Sorbonne campus of the University of Paris.“Our office was ransacked while the campus is currently occupied by radical left-wing students. A cabinet was thrown on the ground and there were inscriptions such as ‘Death to Israel’, ‘Viva Arafat’ on the wall”, Gozlan says.A video published on the organization’s Twitter account showed other inscriptions, including “Zionist racist anti-goy office” and “Palestine will prevail.”Ghozlan said he would file a complaint with Paris police, and urged university officials to “act quickly” to identify the perpetrators.University president Georges Haddad tweeted his condemnation of “this odious act” and said he would seek an investigation. Minister of Higher Education, Frédérique Vidal, also condemned the anti-Semitic vandalism as “shameful.”The vandalism came ahead of marches Wednesday in Paris and other cities to resist racism and to honor 85-year-old Mireille Knoll, stabbed to death in what authorities are calling an anti-Semitic attack.7:15 pm-PA: 4.78m Palestinians in West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem-Palestinian officials say preliminary census results show the Palestinian population in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem has grown by 27 percent in a decade, to 4.78 million. The findings released this afternoon by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics come amid renewed debate over when Arabs could reach numerical parity with Jews in the territory between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River.Israeli demographer Sergio Della Pergola has predicted parity in a generation — a prognosis dismissed by right-wing Israeli as baseless and hailed by supporters of an Israeli-Palestinian partition deal as a call for action. The Palestinian bureau says 2.881 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and 1.899 million in Gaza.— AP-6:01 pm-Slovakia to recall its ambassador to Moscow-Slovakia’s foreign minister says the government has decided to recall its ambassador to Moscow for consultations over the nerve agent attack on a former spy in Britain. But Miroslav Lajcak says after a meeting of the country’s Security Council that the government is not yet ready to join two dozen other countries in expelling Russian diplomats over the incident.Although Lajcak calls Slovakia’s move “a serious diplomatic step,” the British ambassador to Bratislava, Andrew Garth, is not impressed.Garth has told the Slovak public television and tweeted that the seriousness of the attack “requires a firm response.”The ambassador adds that “I acknowledge the decision. But cannot say I am not disappointed.”— AP-5:29 pm-Israel hopes new database will make it medical powerhouse-Israel says it’s launching a domestic digital health database that could make it a global medical powerhouse.Eli Groner, director-general of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, said on Wednesday that “the database will be unlike anything in the world.”He says people will get health alerts before they become patients, helping prevent disease early with data relevant to each individual. If successful, the database could improve public health worldwide but critics warn it risks compromising personal privacy.Groner says the launch is expected by the end of 2018, stressing that divulging data depends on individual consent. The innovation is possible thanks to Israel’s health care system. Most of the country’s 8.7 million citizens are members of four main health care providers, which have been maintaining their records digitally for years.— AP-5:16 pm-With Netanyahu out sick, Liberman leads cabinet meeting-Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman leads the security cabinet meeting this afternoon due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s illness.Netanyahu was rushed to a Jerusalem hospital last night, where doctors diagnosed him with a viral infection. The prime minister’s personal physician said that Netanyahu had been ill in recent weeks and his condition worsened because he had not rested enough to fully recover.Netanyahu was released from Hadassah Ein Kerem shortly after midnight last night and ordered by doctors to rest.4:53 pm-Macron attends funeral of slain Holocaust survivor-French President Emmanuel Macron is attending the funeral of slain Holocaust survivor Mireille Knoll.A statement from Macron’s office says the president went to the funeral at the Bagneux cemetery “to support the family.”Après l’hommage à Arnaud Beltrame, Emmanuel Macron s’est rendu aux obsèques de Mireille Knoll à Bagneux— William Galibert (@WGalibert) March 28, 2018-4:29 pm-In defiance of US, PA allocates $355m in terrorist stipends for 2018In defiance of the US, the Palestinian Authority has reportedly allocated NIS 1.24 billion ($355 million) from its 2018 budget to pay monthly stipends to terrorists and the families of slain attackers.Palestinian Media Watch says the payments will come out of the PA’s total operating budget for the coming year, which has been set at NIS 16.6 billion ($4.76 billion). The report comes days after US President Donald Trump signed legislation that would further cut US aid to the Ramallah-based government until it ended the controversial practice.4:17 pm-Israel arrests unarmed Palestinian who crossed into Israel illegally-Israeli soldiers arrest an unarmed Palestinian man who infiltrated from Gaza into Israeli territory, near the community of Zikim, in the third such case in under a week, the army says. The IDF says he was picked up moments after he crossed into Israel. He has been handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning, the army says.— Judah Ari Gross.3:21 pm-Facebook announces new steps to protect users’ privacy-Facebook says it will overhaul its privacy settings tools to put users “more in control” of their information on the social media website.“We’ve heard loud and clear that privacy settings and other important tools are too hard to find and that we must do more to keep people informed,” Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan and Deputy General Counsel Ashlie Beringer say in a blog post.“We’re taking additional steps in the coming weeks to put people more in control of their privacy,” they confirm. The updates include improving ease of access to Facebook’s user settings, a privacy shortcuts menu and tools to search for, download and delete personal data stored by Facebook.— AFP-3:13 pm-Jordan approves new Israeli ambassador-Jordan has approved the appointment of the new Israeli ambassador to the kingdom, according to reports in Hebrew-language media.Last month, the Foreign Ministry announced the appointment of Amir Weissbrod as Israel’s new ambassador to Jordan. The announcement came after Israel and Jordan reached an agreement to end a diplomatic standoff over the July 23, 2017, shooting deaths of two Jordanian men by an Israeli embassy security guard. Israel says the guard opened fire in self-defense after being attacked by one of the men.2:27 pm-Australian lawmaker proposes motion apologizing for failure to act during Holocaust-An Australian lawmaker has proposed a motion in parliament that would oblige the government to apologize for its failure to assist Jewish refugees in the years leading up to the Holocaust.“Our nation’s government turned its back on our Jewish friends at the exact time they needed us. Our parliament said nothing,” Stuart Robert tells parliament in a special session according to News 9.He says Australia’s refusal to accept Jewish refugees from Europe in 1938 contributed to the Holocaust’s enormous death toll. The Australian parliament will debate issuing the apology at a later date.2:01 pm-Kahlon okays construction permit for US embassy move to Jerusalem-Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon signs a waiver allowing the US State Department to make the changes needed to turn its consulate in Jerusalem into the new US embassy in Israel. In a statement, Kahlon calls the move a “historic moment that we’ve waited many years for.”“As finance minister, as a citizen of Israel and as a Jew, there is nothing more important to work on, to invest effort in, than bringing the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” he says.Yesterday, the National Council for Planning and Construction approved the new construction work at the US Consulate in Jerusalem ahead of its planned transformation into the American embassy in time for Israel’s 70th independence day, on May 14.

Black teens on Parkland gun debate: What about us? [The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-March 28, 2018
BALTIMORE — Imani Holt was just 10 when she saw a neighbour get fatally shot by a triggerman riding a bicycle. The African-American girl from a gritty section of Baltimore was so traumatized by the drug-fueled bloodshed she refused to leave her family's apartment for weeks. In the eight years since, Holt has seen the chaotic aftermath of two more deadly shootings and has lost seven high school classmates to the daily drip of gun violence.Like many black teenagers in neighbourhoods hobbled by generational poverty, she is scrutinizing the national gun control debate intensely, frustrated because her community feels ignored but also cautiously hopeful that the massacre in Florida may bring about change closer to home."I feel really bad that they lost those kids in Florida. But, like, we go through shootings all the time. It's just that our shootings happen day by day. Because it happens on the regular up here, the world says it's really not that important," said the 18-year-old Holt, a junior at Excel Academy, an alternative high school across the street from a cluster of West Baltimore's boarded-up row houses.Christina Martin, a 17-year-old who lost two schoolmates to gun violence this year at Thurgood Marshall Academy in Washington, noted that the victims in the affluent Parkland community were mostly white and Latino. None were African-American."We should have got the same attention in return," said Martin, who is black. The gun violence toll is unrelenting in parts of Baltimore — a city that reached a grim milestone last year when the per-capita homicide rate rose to 56 killings per 100,000 people. That's the highest rate among the country's 30 biggest cities.Even as Excel Academy students prepared for last Saturday's March for Our Lives protest, gun violence struck again: A 17-year-old classmate was shot on a street corner, three bullets in the back by an unidentified gunman. The deaths of seven classmates to gun violence over the span of 15 months have left deep emotional scars. The students at Excel agree that their high school — with a metal detector at the entrance— provides a sense of security. But the toll on their bodies and minds is significant. Nerves are on edge. It can be hard to concentrate."It's really scary. You just want to go to sleep, wake up and see the same people you saw yesterday. But it's like: One day you see somebody, the next day they're gone," Holt said.At the New Hope Baptist Church in New Orleans' Central City neighbourhood — an area that has struggled with crime — Pastor Jamaal Weathersby has presided over funeral services for a toddler killed in a shooting and three brothers all shot in the same incident. He worries about the impact that repeated gun violence has on young people."There are so many young people who are suffering silently, trying to internalize how their brothers, sisters, uncles, even parents are being gunned down in our streets and I think it's something, no matter how long, eventually I believe it's going to come out in some shape, form or fashion, whether it's depression, keeping up in school," he said.Parkland's student protesters are well aware that their peers in inner-city districts are dealing with the impact of gun violence daily. Earlier this month, they met with Chicago teens. Before the Washington march on Saturday, a number of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School went to Thurgood Marshall High School to hear from students there."We openly recognize that we are privileged individuals and would not have received as much attention if it weren't for the affluence of our city. Because of that, however, we share the stage today and forever with those who have always stared down the barrel of a gun," Parkland student Jaclyn Corin said during a speech Saturday. Many worry that despite the renewed attention on gun violence and gun laws, little will change. Angel Anderson went to the New Orleans March for Our Lives rally Saturday to support her 13-year-old daughter. Her own son was robbed at gunpoint outside her house in the middle of the day by a gunman who wanted his hover board."I just feel like we're on our own," she said.Others are hopeful that the voices of impassioned young people can push policymakers to do something."This gun violence has got to stop somewhere," said Holt, who was among 25 Excel Academy students and staff who joined hundreds of thousands of people Saturday to call for tougher laws against firearms and ammo at Washington's March for Our Lives rally. "This might be the start of real change happening now. Not just for Florida, for us too. For everybody."___Santana reported from New Orleans. EU plan to improve army logistics across Europe By Eric Maurice-MAR 28,18-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, Today, 17:27-The European Commission launched on Wednesday (28 March) a plan to improve military mobility between member states, as part of a wider effort to step up its defence capacities. The debate over Europe's ability to project troops on and across its territory was launched by the US and Nato in 2014 after Russia's invasion of Crimea."We must be able to quickly deploy troops," EU transport commissioner Violeta Bulc said at a press conference, adding that the plan was "one of very practical steps towards a fully-fledged defence union by 2025.""I really hope this will never happen," she said about the need to move troops across Europe in response to a threat."But I don't want to be surprised," she added. "We try to ensure that in case things need to be activated, we can do it."Under the plan, the commission, the member states and the European Defence Agency will define the military requirements, including the definition of infrastructure needed, and identify how they fit with current regulations. The aim is to be able, by the end of next year, to draw up a list of "dual-use" projects to improve infrastructure that could used both for civilian and military transport.A pilot analysis conducted last year showed that standards for road bridges or railroads were different between member states. Some bridges, for example, could not support oversized or over-weighted military vehicles, and some rails had an insufficient loading capacity. The effort to update infrastructures for military will be part of an ongoing plan to create nine east-west and north-south 'core network corridors' to be completed by 2030.Bulc noted that while €500bn was needed to complete the corridors, additional costs to adapt them to the military requirements will depend on the needs still to be identified."At this point, we're not aware of the amount of money we are talking about," she said. "We have all member states on board. How far and how deep this will go, member states will decide."In addition to developing infrastructure, the commission also plans to simplify administrative procedures such as customs and VAT declarations, or authorisation for the transportation of dangerous goods."We are looking at harmonising fragmented national rules," Bulc said, noting that the current situation "creates an opportunity cost of at least €30bn."The plan "very clearly states what needs to be done," Daniel Fiott, an analyst at the EU Institute for Securities Studies, told EUobserver. The pressure to move forward has increased since the election of Donald Trump as US president and his calls for Europeans to upgrade their defence capacities.-EU plan, not Nato-Bulc stressed however that the mobility plan was "part of the EU defence strategy, not Nato.""It has been a US request for many years, but it has been recognised by Europeans as a real problem," Fiott pointed out.Since Brexit, and as part of the global effort to relaunch the European project, the EU has established a Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), with 17 projects involving 25 countries.Among the 17 projects, "mobility is the one with the most countries involved," Fiott noted.Referring to the strategic challenge posed by Russia, he said that the rationale for the effort was "quite clear".And he said eastern EU countries may "have a higher need" for such infrastructure investment."Maps show that there is a high intensity of transport linkages in eastern Europe, but the question is how modernised they are," he said. But as troops would be moving all across Europe, he said, the problem "needs to be tackled by all member states."
Opinion-Why the EU must close EUvsDisinfo- By Arjen Nijeboer-MAR 28,18-EUOBSERVER
AMSTERDAM, Today, 09:15-On March 6, a large majority of the Dutch Parliament consisting of 10 out of 13 parties, ordered interior minister Kajsa Ollongren to convince her European colleagues to take down EUvsDisinfo.eu, the EU website dedicated to countering Russian disinformation.Ollongren has made the fight against Russian fake news and disinformation a top priority, and previously stated that she wanted to provide extra means and funding for EUvsDisinfo. That's why the parliamentarians added that if she would not make the Dutch case properly, they would send prime minister Mark Rutte to Brussels to do the job.I think the Dutch parliamentarians are right and I will explain why.The state should not interfere with the free media.EUvsDisinfo.eu is a website that reports about disinformation fake news spread by Russian state or private actors. It maintains an extensive and constantly-updated online database of currently 3,500 media reports that, according to EUvsDisinfo, constitute "disinformation".The website is published by the East Stratcom Task Force, an official EU body that was set up in 2015 by the European heads of state. In other words, EUvsDisinfo is a state publication that not only spreads its own news, but also passes judgements whether a publication in the free media contains the correct views or not.If your publication ends up in its database, you're officially labeled by the EU as a publisher of disinformation and fake news. That is a problem which should not be underestimated.Since the birth of the Enlightenment, most of us have not only come to accept the principle of democracy as a form of government where citizens – who are principally seen as equals – have the final say in politics, but also the principle of freedom of speech, meaning the natural right of free individuals to freely spread information and absorb information by others without interference by the state.Freedom of speech is closely associated with other classical citizen rights such as the right to run free media, to free assembly, free association, free education, and on.The democratic state should not interfere in these areas because if it does, it makes it impossible for the truth to emerge in the public debate leading up to democratic votes. Also, by crippling the mentioned citizen rights the state would kill the source for its own regeneration.A curtailing by the state of the mentioned individual rights does not become more legitimate when it is democratically decided – even by referendum - because even 99 percent of citizens do not have the natural right to prevent the other one percent from free speech, free association, free education, and so on.How EUvsDisinfo operates-The above is not an abstract academic discussion. When state bodies interfere with the free media, things quickly go wrong as demonstrated below. The Dutch parliamentary action against EUvsDisinfo results from the controversy that emerged after three Dutch media outlets – regional newspaper De Gelderlander and two Eurosceptic news websites GeenStijl.nl and TPO.nl with a large cult following - discovered in January that they had been accused of spreading disinformation and fake news by the EU body because of one article published by each of them.Sadly, there is no space here to describe the cases in detail. But anyone who wants to know exactly how EUvsDisinfo distorted the Dutch media articles, falsely accused them of spreading pro-Kremlin propaganda, refused to fully rectify its obvious errors, and tried to get away with it by offering apparently false excuses, should read the English subpoena of the court case started by the Dutch media outlets against the European Union (as this is the official publisher of EUvsDisinfo).Only after receiving the subpoena, EUvsDisinfo removed the three articles from their database, without a real rectification and without informing the three media outlets about it.After their attorneys advised them that their chances in the court room had now severely reduced, the media outlets dropped the case and continued to defend themselves just by words.Meanwhile, other Dutch media, puzzled by its bizarre accusations, contacted EUvsDisinfo and investigated into its operations. The EUvsDisinfo spokesperson told them they could not visit its headquarters nor were they allowed to speak to its team members.EUvsDisinfo claims that it is informed by a volunteer network of more than 400 experts, journalists, government officials, NGOs and think tanks. In reality, Dutch public broadcaster NOS discovered that of the claimed 400 volunteers, only 10 are really active.Together they reported 75 percent of blacklisted articles, while one single jobless volunteer has been responsible for reporting no less than 25 percent of all 3,500 supposed cases of disinformation.Even more worrisome is the fact that, long after EUvsDisinfo has removed the three Dutch media reports from its blacklist, EUobserver last week quoted anonymous EU officials involved who still maintain that the Dutch media reports were, in fact, disinformation. This means EU officials have not changed their attitude at all and apparently plan to keep going on the old way.How disinformation should be combatted-Of course, the free media should be watched critically just like any other societal institution. This is the job, however, of other free media, experts, NGOs and non-state media watchdogs. The media should check on the state, not the other way around. If the media publish libel or slander, then affected individuals or organizations can sue them under the libel and slander laws existing in virtually all European countries. If state actors run disinformation campaigns meant to manipulate other countries, then governments have highly-sophisticated secret and intelligence services that can track down and counter such campaigns – if only by publishing about them. There are many claims these days that Russian disinformation threatens our democracies. In a January 2018 meeting in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the security commissioner of the European Commission, Julian King, told MEPs and the public that Russia has been "extremely successful" in spreading disinformation. As evidence he quoted EUvsDisinfo's 3,500 cases. Danish MEP Jeppe Kofod stated: "Next year the citizens of Europe will elect a new European Parliament. This raises an uncomfortable question: how many seats will Russia get?"I think we should keep our heads cool and look at the facts.First, even if we assume that the quoted 3,500 cases (typically online articles of one webpage each) really are disinformation, then we should still remember that there are currently an estimated 130 trillion (130,000,000,000,000) single webpages, the bulk of which are from Europe and the USA.So the percentage of (claimed) disinformation pages is near zero. Could they really have the extreme effects predicted by EU officials? Second, Russian state attempts manipulate the democratic process of European countries have been in full swing since at least the 1917 Communist grab to power. And each year, tens of thousands of elections and referendums are held in Europe on all levels of government – France alone has 35,000 municipalities.Still, the first hard evidence that even a single political seat or a single referendum vote in Europe was won or lost because of hidden interference by any foreign actor, still has to be produced. That also goes for the Brexit plebiscite.Scaring the public with unproven stories that our European democracies are being derailed through hidden manipulation by agents of the enemy, comes uncomfortably close to promoting classical conspiracy theories.History has shown the destruction caused by them and responsible officials and commentators should refrain from employing them.In any case, we do not defend democracy, freedom and truth by taking over the methods of those who would like to destroy them.Arjen Nijeboer is an independent Amsterdam-based journalist, author and activist. Mar, 21:40-Eight more Russian diplomats are to be sent packing from Belgium and one from Ireland, but Russia's EU envoy is to stay in place. The Belgian tally included seven to be expelled from Russia's mission to Nato, which is located in Brussels, and one from Russia's embassy to Belgium."Russia has underestimated the unity of Nato allies," Nato head Jens Stoltenberg said, announcing the move, which came in response to Russia's attempt to kill a former spy in England using a chemical weapon earlier this month."It sends a very clear message to Russia that it [its UK attack] has costs," he added. The Belgian prime minister's office said it was committed to an "open and frank dialogue" with Moscow despite its move. The Irish leader, Leo Varadkar, said the same day that he had expelled a Russian diplomat despite his country's history of neutrality in European conflicts."When it comes to terrorism, assassinations, the use of chemical weapons and cyberterrorism, we are not neutral one bit," he said."We are joined with other neutral countries including Finland and Sweden, who have taken the same course of action as us," he added.Ireland's decision stood in contrast to Austria's, which boycotted the EU expulsions on grounds of neutrality.Tuesday's expulsions follow more sweeping ones by EU and Nato states on Monday. They bring to 18 the number of EU states that did so, while nine have opted not to go ahead citing various reasons. The Belgian move was also quite minimalist, given that it had the power to expel any of the 140 or so Russian diplomats accredited at Russia's Belgian, Nato, and EU missions. The EU also had the right to take away its accreditation to Russian diplomats in the EU mission. But both Belgium and the EU opted to leave in place Vladimir Chizhov, Russia's ambassador to the EU, who was tainted with suspicion of espionage activity back in 2009 when Nato expelled his son, Vasily Chizhov, for spying. Many of the EU and Nato states who expelled Russian diplomats did so on grounds they were expelling spies who posed a security treat. Many of the Russians accredited as diplomats in Belgium are in fact spies, the then Belgian intelligence chief told EUobserver back in 2012.The diplomatic expulsions have prompted some surprises. On Tuesday, the normally Russia-friendly US president Donald Trump called his counterparts in France and Germany and "praised" their tough action on the UK incident.Slovakia, normally a staunch Nato ally, has refused to expel anyone, prompting its president, Andrei Kiska, to ask the government, also on Tuesday, why it did not "express solidarity with our important ally."British prime minister Theresa May said the same day the EU ought to consider more "long-term" measures also. Her comments comes amid debate in the UK, Denmark, and Sweden whether to introduce targeted financial sanctions against Kremlin cronies via so-called Magnitsky Acts, named after a late Russian anti-corruption activist. The list of EU states who opted for expulsions include: Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.Those who did not include: Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal, Slovakia, and Slovenia.Australia, Canada, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Ukraine, and the US also joined the EU, covering more than 100 Russians, in what amounted to the largest collective expulsion of its kind in history.

Kim, Xi portray strong ties after N. Korean leader's visit-YAHOONEWS-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-March 27, 2018
BEIJING — North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping sought to portray strong ties between the long-time allies despite a recent chill as both countries on Wednesday confirmed Kim's secret trip to Beijing this week. The visit highlights Beijing and Pyongyang's efforts to better position themselves by showing they support each other ahead of Kim's planned meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and President Donald Trump in the coming weeks.Kim made the unofficial visit to China from Sunday to Wednesday at Xi's invitation, China's official Xinhua News Agency said, in what was in his first trip to a foreign country since he took power in 2011.Xi held talks with Kim at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and he and his wife Peng Liyuan hosted a banquet for Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju, Xinhua said. They also watched an art performance together, the news agency said.Official reports from both countries depicted in effusive terms warm ties between the two leaders in an effort to downplay recent tensions in relations over Kim's development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles. In these reports, "Kim reaffirms the traditional friendship between the two countries as if nothing had ever happened, when the relationship had plummeted to unprecedented lows," said Bonnie Glaser, an Asia expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.Ties in recent months have frayed as China supported tougher U.N. sanctions on North Korea and suspended imports of coal, iron ore, seafood and textiles. Pyongyang last year seemingly sought to humiliate Beijing by timing some of its missile tests for major global summits in China, while its state media accused Chinese state-controlled media of "going under the armpit of the U.S." by criticizing the North.Xi hailed Kim's visit as embodying the importance with which the North Korean leader regarded ties with China."We speak highly of this visit," Xi told Kim, according to Xinhua. For China, the visit also reminds other countries that Beijing remains one of North Korea's most important allies and is a player not to be sidelined in denuclearization talks. It also projects to the Chinese public that Xi is firmly in charge of steering Beijing's relations with North Korea in a way that favours China's interests."Here is Xi Jinping saying, 'Don't worry, everything is going to be great'," Glaser said.Analysts say Kim would have felt a need to consult with his country's traditional ally ahead of summits with Moon and Trump. China would also not want Kim's first foreign meeting to be with someone other than Xi."China was getting concerned it could be left out of any initial political agreements that Moon and Kim or Trump and Kim could come to," said Michael Kovrig, senior advisor for northeast Asia at the International Crisis Group."This is China asserting its regional hegemony and influence, saying: 'Hey, you talk to me first.'"Kim was described by Xinhua as saying that his country wants to transform ties with South Korea into "a relationship of reconciliation and co-operation ." The two Koreas are still technically at war because their 1950-53 war ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.Kim also said that North Korea is willing to hold a summit with the United States, according to Xinhua.North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency published Kim's personal letter to Xi dated on Wednesday, where he expressed gratitude to the Chinese leadership for showing what he described as "heartwarming hospitality" during his "productive" visit.Kim said that the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries will provide a "groundbreaking milestone" in developing mutual relations to "meet the demands of the new era." Kim also said that he's satisfied that the leaders confirmed their "unified opinions" on mutual issues."For the North Koreans, it is in their best interests to enter any meetings with Moon or Trump having shored up and repaired to a certain extent their relations with Beijing," said Paul Haenle, director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy in Beijing.KCNA said Kim also called for more meetings with Xi and other Chinese officials to deepen the ties between the countries and also asked Xi to visit North Korea at a time convenient for him, to which Xi "gladly accepted."The North's diplomatic outreach this year follows a tenser 2017 when it conducted its most powerful nuclear test to date and tested three intercontinental ballistic missiles designed to target the U.S. mainland. The developments are being interpreted as the North being desperate to break out of isolation and improve its economy after being squeezed by heavy sanctions."At least one of the things that Kim would want out of these meetings is a way forward to begin to ease those sanctions and support from China in that effort," Glaser said.China remains North Korea's only major ally and chief provider of energy, aid and trade that keep the country's broken economy afloat. In a speech at a banquet in China, Kim described the traditional allies as inseparable " neighbouring brothers" with a relationship moulded by a "sacred mutual fight" to achieve socialist ideals, according to KCNA.In addition to the trip being his first abroad as leader, his talk with Xi was his first meeting with a foreign head of state. Kim's father, late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, had visited China several times during his rule, lastly in May 2011, months before his death that December."It's most proper that my first overseas trip would be the capital of the People's Republic of China," said Kim Jong Un, according to the North Korean agency. "It's also one of my noble duties to value the North Korea-China friendship as I do my own life."___Kim reported from Seoul, South Korea. China says North Korea's Kim pledged commitment to denuclearization-[Reuters]-By Ben Blanchard and Joyce Lee-YAHOONEWS-March 28, 2018
BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un pledged his commitment to denuclearization and to meet U.S. officials, China said on Wednesday after his meeting with President Xi Jinping, who promised China would uphold friendship with its isolated neighbor. After two days of speculation, China and North Korea both confirmed that Kim had traveled to Beijing and met Xi during what China called an unofficial visit from Sunday to Wednesday. The visit was Kim's first known trip outside North Korea since he assumed power in 2011 and is believed by analysts to serve as preparation for upcoming summits with South Korea and the United States.U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter he had received a message from Xi on Tuesday night that his meeting with Kim "went very well" and that Kim looked forward to meeting the U.S. president."Look forward to our meeting!" Trump wrote, while adding: "In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!"The White House said on Tuesday that North Korea's denuclearization pledge was evidence that the U.S.-led pressure campaign to force North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons was working."For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility," Trump tweeted on Wednesday. "Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity."Earlier this month, Trump, who has exchanged bellicose threats with Kim in the past year, surprised the world by agreeing to meet the North Korean leader to discuss the crisis over Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons capable of hitting the United States.North Korea's official media has made no mention of Kim's pledge to denuclearize or the anticipated meeting with Trump, which is planned for some time in May.China has traditionally been secretive North Korea's closest ally but ties have been frayed by Kim's nuclear weapons program and Beijing's backing of tough U.N. sanctions in response.China's Foreign Ministry cited Kim in a lengthy statement as telling Xi the situation on the Korean peninsula was starting to improve because North Korea had taken the initiative to ease tensions and put forward proposals for talks."It is our consistent stand to be committed to denuclearization on the peninsula, in accordance with the will of late President Kim Il Sung and late General Secretary Kim Jong Il," Kim Jong Un said, according to the ministry.North Korea was willing to talk with the United States and hold a summit between the countries, it quoted him as saying."The issue of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula can be resolved, if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace," Kim said.'NUCLEAR UMBRELLA'-Kim Jong Un's predecessors, grandfather Kim Il Sung and father Kim Jong Il, both promised not to pursue nuclear weapons but secretly maintained programs to develop them, culminating in the North's first nuclear test in 2006 under Kim Jong Il.North Korea has said in previous, failed talks aimed at dismantling its nuclear program it could consider giving up its arsenal if the United States removed its troops from South Korea and withdrew its so-called nuclear umbrella of deterrence from South Korea and Japan. Many analysts and former negotiators believe this still constitutes North Korea's stance and remain deeply skeptical Kim is willing to give up the weapons his family has been developing for decades."Kim Jong Un has finally echoed the unconvincing line of his father that denuclearization is the 'will' of Kim Il Sung," said Daniel Russel, who served as the top U.S. diplomat for Asia until last April."While that's better than his outright rejection of denuclearization to date, it's not very persuasive in light of his actions and his caveats about the need for the U.S. to first create the right 'atmosphere,'” Russel said in an email.Widely read Chinese state-run newspaper the Global Times said the Kim-Xi meeting proved naysayers wrong about Beijing-Pyongyang relations."China and North Korea maintaining their friendly relations provides a positive force for the whole region and promotes strategic stability in northeast Asia," it said in an editorial.Kim's appearance in Beijing involved almost all the trappings of a state visit, complete with an honor guard and banquet at Beijing's Great Hall of the People.Kim and Xi also met at the Diaoyutai State Guest House, where Kim Il Sung planted a tree in 1959 that still stands.State television showed pictures of the two men chatting and Kim's wife, Ri Sol Ju, getting a warm welcome from Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan.Analysts said the meeting strengthened North Korea's position ahead of any meeting with Trump by aligning Beijing and Pyongyang while reassuring China it was not being sidelined in any negotiations."It seems that North Korea is not ready to deal with the United States without support and help from its longtime ally China," said Han Suk-hee, professor of Chinese Studies at South Korea's Yonsei University.A top Chinese diplomat, Politburo member Yang Jiechi, will brief South Korean President Moon Jae-in about the about the Beijing talks in Seoul on Thursday, the South Korean presidency said.North Korea's official news agency said Kim told a banquet hosted by Xi that his visit was intended to "maintain our great friendship and continue and develop our bilateral ties at a time of rapid developments on the Korean peninsula".It said Xi had accepted an invitation "with pleasure" to visit North Korea.China made no mention of Xi accepting an invitation, but Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang pointed to a line in their statement citing Xi as saying he is willing to maintain regular communications with North Korea via visits and exchanges of envoys and messages."I have to say that China and North Korea have a tradition of high-level mutual visits," Lu told a daily news briefing.China had largely sat on the sidelines as North Korea improved relations with South Korea recently, raising worries in Beijing that it was no longer a central player in the North Korean issue, reinforced by Trump's announcement of his proposed meeting with Kim."China is North Korea's lifeline, so the notion, from a Chinese perspective, that Kim Jong Un could have had these other two meetings before meeting with Xi Jinping, I think the Chinese just thought that is not going to happen," said Paul Haenle, director of Beijing's Carnegie–Tsinghua Center and White House representative to North Korea denuclearization talks from 2007-2009.(Additional reporting by Christine Kim and Soyoung Kim in SEOUL, David Stanway and John Ruwitch in SHANGHAI and Ayesha Rascoe, Lisa Russia conducts first post-Soviet training flight via North Pole to North America: RIA-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-March 28, 2018
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has conducted its first military training flight via the North Pole to North America since Soviet times, the RIA news agency cited Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu as saying on Wednesday.Shoigu, addressing senior military commanders, was quoted as saying the flight had been carried out by Russian anti-submarine aircraft. He did not say when the flight took place, but his announcement coincides with a major naval exercise by the United States and Britain in the Arctic Circle, and at time of heightened East-West tensions over the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain. The U.S.-led drills, called Exercise 18 (ICEX), are being co-ordinated by the U.S. Navy's Arctic Submarine Laboratory and involve Britain's HMS Trenchant and two U.S. submarines, the USS Connecticut and the USS Hartford.Britain has billed the exercise as an opportunity for its submariners to learn and develop skills to operate under the Arctic ice cap.Russia, in the midst of a major rearmament program, has embarked upon its biggest military push in the Arctic -- beefing up its military presence and capabilities -- since the 1991 Soviet fall. The Arctic is estimated to hold more hydrocarbon reserves than Saudi Arabia and Russia.(Reporting by Andrew Osborn and Polina Devitt; Writing by Andrew Osborn; Editing by Peter Graff)
Russia's EU friends decline to expel diplomats By Andrew Rettman-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, 27. Mar, 09:29-Eleven EU countries have so far failed to join the others in expelling Russian diplomats in solidarity with the UK.The list as of Tuesday (27 March) included Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Some of them are likely to join the EU mainstream in the next few days.Belgium is still weighing up who to target from the 140 Russian diplomats accredited to Russia's bilateral mission to the country as well as its EU and Nato embassies. The Irish foreign minister, Simon Coveney, promised on Monday to "take appropriate action" to "show solidarity with our closest neighbour" later on Tuesday. The Slovak foreign ministry said: "The development of the situation, as well as Russia's response to the calls addressed to it by the EU countries - including Slovakia - will influence the next steps that we are prepared to consider in this case".Portugal does not plan to expel anyone, saying it preferred action at the level of the EU28, instead of making bilateral moves or joining EU sub-groups."Portugal believes that coordination at the European Union level is the most effective means to respond to the gravity of the current situation," its foreign ministry said on Monday.A spokeswoman for the Luxembourg foreign ministry told EUobserver: "Our government first wants to await the conclusions of the OPCW's analysis", referring to an international body on chemical warfare that is investigating the UK incident."There are only a few Russian diplomats in Luxembourg, with no proof that any of them are involved in spying activities," she added."Luxembourg has currently two diplomats in Moscow. If Luxembourg would expel two Russian diplomats, and Russia would expel two Luxembourg diplomat as a retaliatory measure, our embassy in Moscow would be closed … as our government always favoured to maintain a dialogue with Russia, that would then become very difficult," she said.-Friends of Russia-Other EU states, who have a history of strong ties with Moscow, have also said they do not intend to expel Russian diplomats despite having signed up to an EU statement blaming Russia for a chemical weapon attack in England earlier this month."We will not take any national measures," Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz and foreign minister Karin Kneissl said in a joint statement."Indeed, we want to keep the channels of communication to Russia open. Austria is a neutral country and sees itself as a bridge-builder between East and West," they said. The Austrian ruling coalition contains the far-right Freedom Party, which has signed a cooperation agreement with the ruling United Russia party in Moscow. The Maltese government, which has made hundreds of millions of euros from selling EU passports to wealthy Russians, echoed Luxembourg. It said in a statement: "We are not doing so ourselves [expelling Russian diplomats] because our diplomatic mission in Moscow is very small and any response by Russia would effectively terminate diplomatic relations.""This operational decision does not reduce our support for the UK and our security partners", it said.Bulgaria, which has strong business ties with Russian firms, cited the fact it is holding the rotating EU presidency as a need to maintain neutrality.Greece, where the ruling coalition also contains a pro-Russian far-right party, called Anel, said previously it would never sanction a member of the UN permanent security council and that it wanted to see more evidence on what had happened in the UK.Its foreign ministry declined to comment to EUobserver on Tuesday.Russian money-Cyprus, whose banks hold billions of euros in Russian capital and which has also been selling EU passports to wealthy Russians, followed Greece.Slovenian foreign minister Karl Erjavec, who hosted Russia's foreign minister in February to try to boost business ties, said on Monday that it was too soon to decide on action because it must be first determined what exactly had happened in the UK.The group of Russia-friendly EU states normally includes Hungary, which is planning to build a nuclear power plant with Russia. But Budapest opted to expel one Russian diplomat anyway, joining the other 15 EU states who expelled 31 diplomats in total, and the UK itself, which expelled 23 of them.
EU-Turkey summit ends with 'no solutions' By Nikolaj Nielsen-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, 27. Mar, 09:23-EU relations with Turkey remain tense following a meeting in Bulgaria where leaders from both sides outlined differences.Speaking to reporters in the Black Sea resort of Varna on Monday (26 March), European Council president Donald Tusk said no solutions or compromises had been found between Ankara and the EU."If you are asking me if we achieved some solutions or compromises, my answer is no. What I can say that is that I raised all our concerns, as you know it was a long list," he said.Tusk, along with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker and Bulgaria's prime minister Boyko Borissov, had met with Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan as part of a broader effort to improve fraught relations. The two sides found common ground on migration, an area of cooperation that appears only to underscore tensions elsewhere. Outstanding internal issues on rule of law, the mass jailing of journalists, Turkish assertive military forays in northern Syria, wider conflicts with Cyprus and the detention of Greek soldiers, remain unresolved.EU leaders had only last week in a summit in Brussels roundly condemned Turkey's "illegal actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea" and demanded that Ankara respect the sovereign rights of Cyprus to explore and exploit its natural resources. The same message was repeated in Varna, with Erdogan stating that he had handed over information to the EU leaders to explain Turkey's position that he claims respects international laws."Not until the European Union stops being overly critical, in particular certain members of the EU, we will not be able to engage fully in improving the relations," said Erdogan. He warned against isolating Turkey. He said its fight against terrorism is a buffer for the EU. He said that the EU needs to lift mandatory short stay visas on Turkish nationals, and that the EU has only doled out €1.8bn of the some €3bn promised to help refugees inside the country."Turkey respects fundamental human rights and is a country that respects human rights," he said, noting that Turkey still wants to become a member of the European Union.Formal talks for membership started in 2005 but have been frozen since the widespread crackdown on dissent and opposition following the failed military coup in 2016.Turkey maintains it is purging people behind the coup, which it has blamed on the exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen. But Juncker in the lead up to the meeting with Erdogan said he had "mixed feelings" of the meeting. He appears to have maintained the sentiment, noting that the discussions were "frank", which is diplomatic code for disputatious. He told Turkey to "have a new look at the imprisoning of journalists."Juncker said Turkey should release the Greek soldiers before the Greek Orthodox Easter, on 8 April, and pressed that the EU was the first to express solidarity with Ankara in the immediate aftermath of the failed military coup in July 2016.The two sides may meet again in June to continue talks.
Turkey says will take action if militants do not leave Syria's Manbij-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-March 28, 2018
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey will take action if militants do not withdraw immediately from Syria's Manbij region and areas in the country east of the Euphrates, Ankara's National Security Council said on Wednesday. The Council said it also expected Iraq's government to prevent the operations of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Iraq, especially in towns of Sinjar and Qandil. If that was not possible Turkey would prevent them itself, the council added.(Reporting by Ezgi Erkoyun)
Exclusive: OPEC, Russia consider 10- to 20-year oil alliance - Saudi Crown Prince-[Reuters]-By Richard Mably and Yara Bayoumy-YAHOONEWS-March 27, 2018
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia and Russia are working on a historic long-term pact that could extend controls over world crude supplies by major exporters for many years.Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told Reuters that Riyadh and Moscow were considering a deal to greatly extend a short-term alliance on oil curbs that began in January 2017 after a crash in crude prices.“We are working to shift from a year-to-year agreement to a 10 to 20 year agreement,” the crown prince told Reuters in an interview in New York late on Monday.“We have agreement on the big picture, but not yet on the detail.”Russia, not a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, has worked alongside the 14-member group during previous oil gluts, but a 10 to 20 year deal between the two would be unprecedented.Top OPEC producer Saudi Arabia recruited Russia and other non-OPEC countries to help drain oversupply when oil prices collapsed to below $30 a barrel in 2016 from over $100 in 2014.Crude has since recovered to $70 but fast-rising output from U.S. shale producers has capped prices.“This is all about whether the arrangement is a short-term expedient to deal with this particular crisis in the oil market, or whether it reflects a realignment in world oil,” said oil historian Daniel Yergin, vice chairman at consultancy IHS Markit.“OPEC countries want to find a way to institutionalize this relationship rather than to have it be a one-shot deal.”Robert McNally at consultancy Rapidan Energy Group said Riyadh wanted help in breaking the boom-bust cycles that characterize oil markets by capping crude on the upside as well as by helping lift low oil prices.“History shows that without a long-term, powerful, competent coherent, disciplined swing producer in the oil markets ... you get space-mountain oil prices. Wild volatility of the sort we have seen in the past 10 to 15 years and that Saudi Arabia and Russia do not want to see again,” McNally said.He said that would require Russia to join Saudi in building spare production capacity to use when prices rise too much.SAUDI, RUSSIA ALLIANCE "THICKER THAN OIL"-A long-term pact between Moscow and Riyadh would effectively co-opt Russia to the Saudi-led OPEC cartel while strengthening Russia's hand in the Middle East where the United States has long been the dominant super-power.News of the potential oil alliance came at a time when the two have been working to cement an economic relationship despite being at odds over the conflict in Syria, where they back opposing sides.Riyadh supports rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army, while Russian and Iranian forces have backed Assad – meaning that Russia effectively sides with Iran, Riyadh’s regional arch-foe.A meeting between the Saudi crown prince and Russian president Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in China in September 2016 was instrumental in bringing Russia on board to support OPEC, non-OPEC oil curbs.Last October, Saudi King Salman became the first Saudi monarch to visit Russia, providing investment and political support for a Russian economy battered by Western sanctions."It is a very important strategic development," Helima Croft at RBC Capital Markets said of a potential 10 to 20 year Saudi-Russia oil collaboration."First, the Crown Prince is making the statement, not the oil minister, one more clear sign that he (like Putin) is the final word on his country's oil policy."Second it is one more sign of the major reversal in Saudi-Russia relations. Saudi was a staunch cold war ally of the U.S. Now this Russia-Saudi alliance appears to be thicker than oil and seems to be driven by the personal affinity between Putin and MBS," said Croft.ARAMCO IPO LATE 2018, EARLY 2019-The crown prince predicted that world oil demand would not peak until 2040, despite advances in renewable energy technologies and the electric vehicle. In an attempt to end Saudi Arabia's reliance on oil, he is leading a push to diversify the Saudi economy away from oil and gas by 2030.Riyadh plans to raise funds through the flotation of a 5 percent stake in state Saudi oil company Aramco. Time is running out for an initial public offering this year but the crown prince said the IPO could still take place at the end of 2018 or in early 2019, depending on financial market conditions.Saudi Oil Minister Khalid al-Falih said last week that documentation was ready but that a venue for the IPO had not yet been decided. The New York stock exchange is still in the running for the IPO, alongside London and Hong Kong, but Falih said there was a risk of a "frivolous" legal action if Aramco were listed in the United States.(Additional reporting by Stephen Adler, Jessica Resnick-Ault; Editing by Frances Kerry, Toni Reinhold)
Germany pledges 'strict' laws after Facebook data breach By Andrew Rettman-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, 27. Mar, 09:11-Germany aims to pass new laws on social media after revelations that Facebook data was used to manipulate voters."In future we will clearly have to monitor companies like Facebook more strictly and punish data protection violations severely and quickly," German justice minister Katarina Barley told press in Berlin on Monday (26 March)."We'll need much tighter supervision of companies like Facebook", she added. She spoke after meeting Richard Allan, the head of the US social media firm's public policy for Europe, but she said that his "promises were not enough" to satisfy authorities.Barley added that firms like Facebook should tell users in "clear, precise and simple language" how their data will be used, and described what happened at the US firm as "intolerable".She spoke after revelations that UK consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica used a bogus questionnaire to obtain detailed information on 50 million Facebook users. About 2,700 people out of the 270,000 who took part in the questionnaire were from Europe.Cambridge Analytica then used that information to target what it called people's "inner demons" with fake news updates in order to help Donald Trump in the 2016 US election.Germany's tough line was echoed by Vera Jourova, the EU's justice commissioner."Have any data of EU citizens been affected by the recent scandal? If this is the case, how do you intend to inform the authorities and users about it?", she wrote in a letter to Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, seen by the Reuters news agency. She asked Sandberg if a similar situation could "not be repeated today" and if Facebook thought stricter rules were needed for social media firms "like those that exist for traditional media".She also said "disappointed" in Facebook's boilerplate reactions to the data breach so far."Trust is now diminished," Jourova said.A new EU law that comes into force later this year will fine firms four percent of global turnover for similar breaches, but this would not be retrospective on Facebook.A German law already punishes social media firms with up to €50m fines if they do not take down posts or ads containing hate speech.Jourova gave Facebook two weeks to answer her letter and urged it to cooperate with British data authorities in their investigation of the Cambridge Analytica affair.Germany has played a lead role in EU privacy legislation in part due to its traumatic legacy of the East German police state during the Cold War.
Astronomers baffled by distant galaxy void of dark matter-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-March 28, 2018
WASHINGTON — It's a double cosmic conundrum: Lots of stuff that was already invisible has gone missing.Astronomers have found a distant galaxy where there is no dark matter.Dark matter is called "dark" because it can't be seen. It is the mysterious and invisible skeleton of the universe that scientists figure makes up about 27 per cent of the cosmos. Scientists only know dark matter exists because they can observe how it pushes and pulls things they can see, like stars. It's supposed to be everywhere. But Yale University astronomer Pieter van Dokkum and colleagues spied a vast, old galaxy with relatively few stars where what you see truly is what you get. The galaxy's stars are speeding around with no apparent influence from dark matter, according to a study published in Wednesday's journal Nature .Instead of shaking the very foundations of physics, scientists say this absence of dark matter may help prove the existence of, wait for it, dark matter."Not sure what to make of it, but it is definitely intriguing," wrote Case Western Reserve astronomer Stacy McGaugh, who was not part of the study, in an email. "This is a weird galaxy."Van Dokkum studies diffuse galaxies, ones that cover enormous areas but have relatively few stars. To look for them he and colleagues built their own makeshift telescope out of 48 telephoto lenses that he first tested by using a toy flashlight to shine a light on a paper clip. The bug-eyed telescope, called Dragonfly , peers into the sky from New Mexico.Using Dragonfly, van Dokkum and colleagues found a large, sparse galaxy called NGC1052-DF2 in the northern constellation Cetus, also known as the whale. It's as big as the Milky Way but with only one per cent of its stars. Then they used larger telescopes on Hawaii and eventually the Hubble Space Telescope to study the galaxy.Even though the galaxy is mostly empty, they found clusters of densely grouped stars. With measurements from the telescopes, van Dokkum and colleagues calculated how fast those clusters moved. If there were a normal amount of dark matter those clusters would be speeding around at about 67,000 mph (108,000 kilometres per hour). Instead, the clusters were moving at about 18,000 mph (28,000 kilometres per hour). That's about how fast they would move if there were no dark matter at all, van Dokkum said. The team also calculated the total mass of the galaxy and found the stars account for everything, with little or no room left for dark matter."I find this unlikely in all possible contexts," said McGaugh, who is a proponent of a "modified gravity" theory that excludes the existence of dark matter altogether. "That doesn't make it wrong, just really weird."How could this absence of dark matter help prove that it exists? By potentially disproving modified gravity theories that suggest gravity acts in a way that the cosmos makes sense without dark matter. But those alternative theories require stars in this galaxy to zip at least twice as fast as they were seen moving in this study.Other outside scientists said the initial look at the calculations appear to be correct, though the results are confounding. A galaxy with so few stars should have more dark matter than others, not none."These are very strong scientists and so I take the results very seriously," said Marc Kamionkowski, a physicist at Johns Hopkins University. One outsider suggested that perhaps the "galaxy" van Dokkum studied is so diffuse that it may not really be a galaxy. Another suggested that the dark matter might just be outside of the area that van Dokkum measured.Van Dokkum dismissed both possibilities. "It's sort of non-negotiable. There's nothing else, just the stars," he said. The only way this can be explained is if dark matter exists in the universe, just not in that galaxy, he said. There's no good explanation for why and how this galaxy has no dark matter, van Dokkum said. He proposed four different possibilities — all unproven. His favourite : That the galaxy formed in the very early universe in a way astronomers have never seen or understood."It's not so often you get a true surprise," van Dokkum said.___Follow Seth Borenstein on Twitter at @borenbears .
