Day before deadline, Trump hasn’t decided whether to sign embassy waiver-Asked if president has made up his mind on relocating US diplomatic mission to Jerusalem, Sean Spicer says ‘no’-By Eric Cortellessa May 30, 2017, 10:43 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — With one day before the deadline, US President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether he will sign a waiver that would delay moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for six months, the White House announced Tuesday.Asked if the president had made a determination, Press Secretary Sean Spicer offered a one-word answer to reporters: “No.” He later added that, “Once we have a decision, we’ll let you know.”A 1995 law mandates the relocation of the embassy, but provides the president with the prerogative to postpone the move on national security grounds. Each of Trump’s three immediate predecessors — Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama — repeatedly exercised that right. The most recent waiver, signed by Obama, expires on June 1. If it is not signed by then, the US government will be legally obligated to proceed with moving the embassy. After Trump announced his trip to Israel, there was high speculation that he would use the visit — which came just before Jerusalem Day, when Israel commemorated 50 years since the Six Day War — to announce the move.Trump repeatedly pledged as a candidate that he would move the embassy. But he seemingly backed off his promise early in his presidency. It was reported that his conversation with various Arab leaders, especially King Abdullah II of Jordan at the National Prayer Breakfast in February, was instrumental to his decision to put the issue on the back burner.Arab leaders have reportedly told Trump — as well as other members of his administration — that an embassy move at this time would spark unrest in the region while making it difficult for their countries to play a helpful role in the peace process.Days before he left for the region, which included his stopping first in Saudi Arabia, a senior administration official confirmed to The Times of Israel that Trump would not move forward with his campaign promise “immediately” but that “a final decision hadn’t been made.”Another official told Bloomberg: “We don’t think it would be wise to do it at this time. We’ve been very clear what our position is and what we would like to see done, but we’re not looking to provoke anyone when everyone’s playing really nice.”The deadline comes just after Trump’s first presidential trip to the region where he sought to boost his efforts to broker what he considers the “ultimate deal” of Israel-Palestinian peace.“I am committed to trying to achieve a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and I intend to do everything I can to help them achieve that goal,” Trump said while in the West Bank last week.On May 24, the day after Trump left Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his call for the US, and all other countries which have ties with Israel, to move their embassies to Jerusalem. It was “absurd” that foreign embassies are in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said.

American envoy to UN Haley to travel to Israel next week-Former governor will hold meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, will later attend Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva-By AFP May 30, 2017, 11:14 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

UNITED NATIONS — US Ambassador Nikki Haley, who has accused the United Nations of anti-Israel bias, will travel to Israel next week and deliver an address to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.Haley will be the first US ambassador to address the rights council at a session on June 6 that will be followed by a speech on the US role at the council, the US mission said. From June 7 to 9, Haley will hold meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders during her visit to Israel and visit a UN peacekeeping mission in the region.Haley has won applause from the Israeli government for pledging to stand up to what she has termed “Israel-bashing” at the United Nations. She has condemned a Security Council resolution demanding that Israel halt the expansion of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land as a “terrible mistake.”The resolution was adopted after the former US administration refused to use its veto to block the measure and instead abstained.Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, has criticized the UN Human Rights Council as “corrupt” and there has been speculation that the United States could withdraw from the council.Countries with questionable human rights records such as China and Saudi Arabia have seats on the UN body.In a speech at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Haley will “address the benefits and the failings of the Council with respect to the vital mission of defending millions of people against the world’s worst cases of human rights abuse,” the US statement said.In Geneva, Haley will also discuss the human rights crisis in Venezuela. It will be her second visit abroad as US ambassador. Last week, she visited Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey.

UN chief: Denial of Israel’s right to exist is anti-Semitism-In meeting with Simon Wiesenthal Center, Secretary General Guterres rejects efforts to deny Jewish history in the Holy Land-By Times of Israel staff May 30, 2017, 10:40 pm

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told officials from the Simon Wiesenthal Center that “denial of Israel’s right to exist is anti-Semitism,” the organization said.Guterres told senior members of the NGO at his offices at UN headquarters in New York that he rejects campaigns to erase Jewish history in the Holy Land. “History must be respected. Jerusalem is a holy city for three religions,” Guterres said, according to a press release on the meeting issued by the center on Tuesday. The UN’s cultural organization UNESCO recently passed several resolutions that ignored Jewish ties to Jerusalem. Guterres has spoken out against that characterization in the past.Guterres and the heads of the Jewish human rights group discussed various issues including challenges to achieving Mideast peace, global terrorism, the UN’s role in countering anti-Semitism in Europe, and Israel’s treatment by UN agencies.Rabbi Marvin Hier, Dean and Founder of the center, called on Guterres to move to declare terrorism a crime against humanity.“There needs to be real consequences for perpetrators and supporters of terrorist acts like the recent suicide bombing carnage at a concert in Manchester,” Hier said. “England and the UN must declare that this scourge is a crime against humanity.”Guterres said he would seek to reform UN agencies to better deal with the issue, acknowledging that the current model of 38 separate entities working on the matter was inefficient.Hier added that the terror group Hamas, with its genocidal charter and terrorist activities, was a central roadblock to peace progress. Guterres admitted that the UN had been used by Hamas in Gaza to a certain extent and expressed his “very strong commitment to not allowing UNWRA to be instrumentalized” by the group. Hamas had “succeeded in leveraging the UN in Gaza,” the Center quoted Guterres as saying.“We are profoundly impressed by the scope of Secretary-General Guterres’s knowledge and interest on issues that impact world Jewry directly,” Hier said later. “As an NGO at the UN and UNESCO, the Wiesenthal Center is committed to support the Secretary-General’s efforts to ensure that all members, including the Jewish state, be treated as equals.”On Sunday the UN said it had withdrawn support for a West Bank Palestinian women’s center named for a notorious terrorist, saying the move was “offensive” and glorified terrorism.“The United Nations disassociated itself from the Center once it learned the offensive name chosen for it and will take measures to ensure that such incidents do not take place in the future,” said a statement from Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres. The center was named after Dalal Mughrabi, who took part in the 1978 Coastal Road Massacre. Mughrabi and several other Fatah terrorists landed on a beach near Tel Aviv, hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Road and killed 38 civilians, 13 of them children, and wounded over 70.“The glorification of terrorism, or the perpetrators of heinous terrorist acts, is unacceptable under any circumstances,” the UN statement said. “The UN has repeatedly called for an end to incitement to violence and hatred as they present one of the obstacles to peace.”“The United Nations support to this community ended last year and it has asked for the logo of UN Women to be removed immediately. Furthermore, the inauguration of the Center took place after the UN’s association with it,” the statement said. The UN move came two days after Norway’s foreign minister condemned the PA for naming the center after Mughrabi, demanding the country’s name be removed from the building and that the funds Norway donated for its construction be returned.

Clinton the Third? Chelsea courts limelight-Despite not yet declaring political intentions, public profile has raised speculation former first daughter will follow in parents’ footsteps-By AFP May 31, 2017, 12:10 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

NEW YORK — Chelsea Clinton, the 37-year-old only child of Bill and Hillary Clinton, is fueling speculation that she could one day run for office — honing her Twitter profile, publishing a new book and becoming increasingly vocal in the wake of her mother’s presidential defeat.Gone is the publicity-shy former first daughter with bouncy curls — replaced by a tireless liberal campaigner, who last year criss-crossed the country to tell Americans why they should elect her mother the first US woman commander-in-chief.Her mother’s loss at the polls to a billionaire former reality star has only seemed to fuel Clinton’s ire.She deluges her 1.7 million followers on Twitter with outrage about Donald Trump’s administration, and thoughts on everything from World Menstrual Hygiene Day to child marriage, as the media devotes column inches to whether she will run for office.Chelsea’s official line is she’s not — but in true politician style, she often couches those denials with caveats such as “right now, no.”That speculation returned to the fore Tuesday with the publication of her third book — a 28-page hardback picture book for children called “She Persisted” about 13 diverse US women who “changed the world.”Her mother makes only a cameo appearance but included in the line-up are Oprah Winfrey, deaf and blind champion Helen Keller, former slave Harriet Tubman, the first American woman in space Sally Ride and Olympic sprint champion Florence Griffith Joyner. The title was inspired by a phrase used to silence left-leaning Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren — an expression adopted as a rallying cry for female opposition to Trump’s Republican administration.Published by Penguin Random House, pre-orders made the book a number one best-seller on Amazon’s list of women biographies for children.-‘In my DNA’-“I’m far more focused on what we do to protect and advance progress than what happened last year,” Clinton told NBC’s Today Show on Tuesday, when asked how the family had dealt with her mother’s loss to Trump six months ago.“I don’t know if that’s just in my DNA or if it’s trying to live up to the example that my parents have always set for me that we always look toward the future.”Of her tweets — to which The New York Times in March devoted more than 1,000 words dissecting her “sarcastic and feisty online personality” — she told NBC: “We all have a responsibility to not stay silent now. I think we have to speak up.”A school girl during her father’s 1993-2001 presidency, Chelsea went on to earn degrees from Stanford, Oxford and Columbia University, before stints on Wall Street and as an NBC “special correspondent” on a reported $600,000 salary.Today vice president of the Clinton family foundation, and an adjunct assistant professor of health policy and management at Columbia University, Chelsea and her Jewish husband Marc Mezvinsky live in a multi-million-dollar apartment in Manhattan opposite Madison Square Park.No other US former first child is so prominent, but Chelsea saturation has also provoked a bitter backlash, even among publications with little love for Trump.“Please, God, Stop Chelsea Clinton From Whatever She Is Doing,” ran the headline on a stinging slap down from Vanity Fair in April, warning “the last thing the left needs is the third iteration of a failed political dynasty.”“Unkind as it is to say, reading anything by Chelsea Clinton — tweets, interviews, books — is best compared to taking in spoonfuls of plain oatmeal that, periodically, conceal a toenail clipping,” the magazine wrote.Critics say, that like her mother, she struggles to connect with ordinary voters and she has been mocked for saying of her time working in finance: “I was curious if I could care about (money) on some fundamental level, and I couldn’t.”Yet the Trump election has left Democrats still searching for a clear leader.“Right now most Democrats are looking for new candidates with new ideas, but Chelsea Clinton has always been bright and capable,” political analyst and veteran of Democratic campaigns, Jamal Simmons, told AFP.“She can succeed at whatever goal she sets her mind to,” he said.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

IDF detains unarmed man who crossed into Israel from Syria-Security forces investigating why infiltrator broke through security fence in southern Golan Heights-By Judah Ari Gross May 30, 2017, 3:22 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

IDF soldiers arrested a man who crossed into Israel from Syria on Tuesday afternoon, the army said. The man was unarmed when he breached the security fence in the southern Golan Heights.Unlike a Lebanese man who last month illegally entered Israel and traveled over two miles before he was caught, the suspected infiltrator from Syria was arrested close the border, a short time after he entered the country. The man was taken in for questioning to determine why he broke into Israel from war-torn Syria, the army said.On April 27, the aforementioned Lebanese man entered Israel near the community of Margaliot on the northern border. He walked just over three kilometers to the nearby city of Kiryat Shmona where he was arrested at a bus station, after people noticed him behaving strangely. In an interview on Lebanese television, the man’s father confirmed this account, saying his son suffered from mental health issues and believed he was Jewish.“My son’s mind is not right. He says he was originally Jewish,” the father said when asked if he was aware of his son’s desire to go to Israel. “Can you imagine a normal person doing such a thing?”Two senior IDF officers and four other servicemen from the IDF’s Northern Command were punished over that incident. The deputy commander of the company responsible for the area where the Lebanese man entered Israel was dismissed from his position, and the battalion commander of the area received an official black mark on his record, the army said, noting their failings in handling the incident.Four other officers and soldiers also faced disciplinary hearings.
