PM has not backtracked on pledge for new Amona settlement, says aide-Senior PMO official refutes reports that Netanyahu is reconsidering his promise; TV report says any new settlement would need White House okay-By Raphael Ahren and Raoul Wootliff February 20, 2017, 8:00 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not backtracked on his commitment to establish a new settlement in the West Bank to compensate the evicted settlers from the illegal Amona outpost, a senior aide for the prime minister said Monday. The statement rebuts recent reports claiming Netanyahu had frozen these plans after his meeting last week with US President Donald Trump.“There is absolutely no intention to violate the commitment that was made to the settlers of Amona,” the senior aide said.“Just today, his chief of staff Yoav Horowitz spoke with [Amona leader] Avichai Baron and told him that every effort is being made to find an agreed-upon solution, and that we do not renege on our commitment,” the aide added.Channel 10 TV said that the question of where Israel can and cannot build in the territories is being discussed with the Trump administration, and quoted an unnamed source saying that the planned new settlement, and any other new settlement, would need White House approval. The unnamed senior Israeli diplomatic source was also quoted saying that “not a lot has changed” where settlements are concerned between the previous Obama administration and the new Trump presidency. While Israel would likely not face Obama-style criticism for building over the pre-1967 lines inside Jerusalem, the source said, “whoever thinks Israel will be able to build new settlements, or build without limits outside the settlement blocs, is going to be mistaken.”On Sunday, Netanyahu reportedly told members of the security cabinet that the government may have to renege on his pledge to set up the new West Bank settlement, following a request by Trump last week to “hold back” on settlement construction.Netanyahu is said to have told ministers that, while he will not impose a settlement freeze, there is likely to be a slowdown in West Bank construction, according to reports on Channel 2 and by the Haaretz daily.Trump told Netanyahu during a joint press conference in Washington last week to “hold back on settlements for a little bit,” a request that, according to the prime minister, makes it difficult to push ahead with the plan to establish the new settlement, Channel 2 and Haaretz reported Netanyahu as saying.Amona is important, and a solution should be found, but there are more pressing issues, he is reported to have told his ministers, citing the need to work with the Trump administration to thwart Iran’s nuclear ambitions.“With all due respect to Amona, we must now focus on coordinating with Trump on Iran. It’s a top priority. I don’t care how many tweets people here write,” he said according to Haaretz, which cited two officials with knowledge of the content of the meeting. Netanyahu was likely referring to a number of tweets since last week by members of the pro-settler Jewish Home party. On Monday, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who heads the Jewish Home party, said at a meeting of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in Israel that he still believes Netanyahu will agree to establish a new West Bank community for the evacuated Amona settlers.“Prime Minister Netanyahu clearly promised the Amona residents that he would form a new town for them,” Bennett said. “Moreover, he signed an agreement with them. I am confident that he will meet his words and we will stand beside him while doing that.”Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel, also of the Jewish Home, said on Sunday he had not been party to any discussions on Amona, but believed the issue may have been brought up at the security cabinet or the Likud ministers’ forum.“The minister had no say whatsoever in the decision,” a spokesman for Ariel told The Times of Israel, saying that Ariel made his views on the issue clear in a tweet posted early Sunday afternoon.“Promises need to be kept and I cannot see how the coalition can continue to work properly without fulfilling its obligation to the residents of Amona and to the citizens of Israel to establish a new settlement for them,” Ariel wrote.A spokesperson for the Amona evictees said Sunday they had not been updated by the government. “As we have said before, we expect the deal to be fulfilled. We are hearing rumors from the media but no one has told us anything,” he said.Under an agreement signed with the government ahead of the evacuation, Amona residents were allowed to pick a new site to rebuild their community — a first state-sanctioned new settlement to be built in decades.Last week, the residents of Amona voted to move to the Geulat Tzion unauthorized outpost, located in the Shiloh settlement bloc. While Amona was built on privately owned Palestinian land, Geulat Tzion lies on a state-owned tract.According to the deal, the new settlement is to be set up within two months.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

If we now start to fight with the Trump administration and Congress, people will really start to think that the Israeli leadership is a bunch of nutcases'-Liberman: Israel would be crazy to defy Trump on settlements-Defense minister rejects one-state solution to conflict, touts his border-drawing plan-By Jacob Magid February 20, 2017, 3:56 pm-THE  TIMES OF ISRAEL

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned Monday that it would be a grave mistake for Israel to go up against the new Trump administration in Washington on settlements.“For eight years, there was tension and friction with the Obama administration. If we now start to fight with the Trump administration… and the Republican-majority Congress, people will really start to think that the leadership in the State of Israel is a bunch of nutcases,” he told Israel Radio. His comments came in reference to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly walking back his promise to build a new settlement for the former residents of the Amona outpost, which was evacuated last month.Netanyahu told members of his security cabinet on Sunday that the state may have to renege on the pledge in light of US President Donald Trump’s request, during a joint press conference he held with the prime minister in Washington last week, that Israel “hold back” on settlement construction. While the defense minister denied that Israel, as a sovereign country, requires a “green light” from the US government in order to move forward with settlement construction, he stressed the importance of avoiding a crisis with the Trump administration over the matter.“Let’s try and talk and reach an agreement. Not every issue needs to be immediately turned into a crisis,” he said. “The most important thing is to reach understandings with the US on all issues.”A “mechanism” for discussing settlements with the US “will be set up when the prime minister returns from the Far East,” an Israeli official said Sunday night.Netanyahu is currently on a state visit to Singapore and Australia.Liberman cited Trump’s new special representative for international negotiations, Jason Greenblatt, as well as Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer, as two allies of the settlement movement who have been working closely with the White House to help reach a consensus on the matter.Netanyahu made similar comments regarding the importance of avoiding spats with the new US president in a closed-door cabinet meeting on February 12, where he warned his ministers that they “mustn’t get into confrontation with Trump.” He reportedly added that the president’s ego needs to be taken “into account.”Earlier in the interview, Liberman rejected Trump’s implication during his press conference with Netanyahu that a single state would be a viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should the two sides agree to it.“I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like,” Trump said.Liberman said that Israel cannot annex the Palestinians living in the West Bank if it wants to remain a Jewish state. He went on to invoke his long-held two-state plan under which some Israeli Arab towns would become part of a future Palestinian state.“We need to separate from the Palestinians in the West Bank, but also from the ones within the 1967 borders,” Liberman said. In a TV interview last week, Liberman said all the “Palestinians” in Israel should go live under the rule of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Hezbollah said to have obtained ‘game-changing’ anti-ship missiles-Russian-made Yakhont would give Lebanese terror group the ability to strike Israeli gas platforms and ships in the Mediterranean-By Alexander Fulbright February 19, 2017, 9:44 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Lebanese terror group Hezbollah has obtained advanced Russian-made anti-ship missiles, potentially threatening Israeli gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea and the Israeli Navy’s ability to operate in the area, according to a report published Sunday.Hezbollah’s possession of the Yakhont missiles was revealed by unnamed Western intelligence officials over the weekend at the Munich Security Conference, where world leaders and defense ministers are meeting to discuss major security issues, according to a report in the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth. The report did not reveal in what forum the revelations were made.If true, Hezbollah’s possession of the missiles would represent a serious threat to Israeli interests in the Mediterranean; endangering both Israeli commercial vessels sailing in shipping lanes off the Lebanese coast and the ability of Israeli Navy ships to operate in and around Lebanese waters. Most significantly, the missiles would give Hezbollah the ability to strike Israel’s gas production platforms in the Mediterranean, a threat Israel reportedly intends to counter by installing maritime versions of the Iron Dome missile defense system on naval vessels as part of the Israeli Navy’s efforts to secure the country’s natural gas fields.Israeli security officials have previously said that advanced missiles such as the Yakhont falling into the hands of Hezbollah would constitute the crossing of a red line, and Israel is said to have targeted at least two shipments of Yakhont systems in 2013 from Syria to Hezbollah. Syria, one of Russia’s closest allies, has a large arsenal of the advanced anti-ship missiles.Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, a number of airstrikes have been attributed to Israel, reportedly targeting convoys of advanced weapons to Hezbollah, as part of Israel’s policy to prevent the group from acquiring “game-changing” arms, in particular anti-aircraft systems, chemical weapons and other advanced weaponry such as the Yakhont. In 2014, then defense-minister Moshe Ya’alon dismissed a report published in The Wall Street Journal alleging Hezbollah was in possession of at least 12 Yakhont systems, saying that Israel believed the Shiite terror group “does not have the missiles.”During the 2006 Lebanon War, Hezbollah successfully struck an Israeli naval warship off the coast of Lebanon using a Chinese-made C-802 anti-ship missile, killing four sailors. The attack on the naval vessel surprised Israeli security officials, with an IDF officer telling the Haaretz daily at the time that “we were under the impression that we were operating beyond the range of missiles.”On Thursday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah boasted that Israel was surprised then and would be surprised again in any future conflict. “In 2006 you had intelligence of our ammunition but you were astonished with what you saw after figuring out that you didn’t have enough information. You will be surprised with what we are (now) hiding which could change the course of any war,” he said-The Yakhont, which was a reported range of up to 300 kilometers (186 miles), would give Hezbollah a significant upgrade over the C-802, which can reach up to a distance of 110 kilometers (68 miles).Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Iran to hold new military drill despite US warnings-‘Grand Prophet 11’ will take place next week, last 3 days and involve rockets, according to the Revolutionary Guards-By AFP February 18, 2017, 2:15 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard is to conduct military drills next week, a senior commander announced Saturday, despite warnings from the United States and fresh sanctions over a ballistic missile test.“The maneuvers called ‘Grand Prophet 11’ will start Monday and last three days,” General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the force’s ground units, told a news conference. He said rockets would be used without specifying which kind.In early February, Iran conducted drills involving short-range missiles at a time of heightened tensions with the United States. The Islamic republic said the exercises were aimed at demonstrating Iran’s “complete preparedness to deal with the threats” and “humiliating sanctions” from Washington.US President Donald Trump slapped fresh sanctions against Tehran’s weapons procurement network following a ballistic missile test on January 29.“Iran would do well to look at the calendar and realize there’s a new president in the Oval Office. And Iran would do well not to test the resolve of this new president,” Vice President Mike Pence said earlier this month.New Pentagon chief James Mattis, for his part, has branded Iran “the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world.”Iranian officials have rejected the threats emphasizing that the missile program is purely defensive.

Top Iranian general: World knows US can’t threaten Iran-Amid rising tensions, Revolutionary Guards commanders say America dare not attack, has been deterred-By Alexander Fulbright February 18, 2017, 7:23 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A leading general in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards lashed out at the US on Saturday, warning that it would be unable to make good on what he said were American threats against the Islamic republic.“The US statesmen should be very wise and avoid threatening Iran, because the entire world has admitted this fact that the Americans cannot do such a thing,” said Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, the chief of the IRGC’s ground forces, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.“Hence, they are unlikely to do such a move because it is unwise,” he added. The IRGC’s deputy commander for political affairs, Rasul Sanayee Rad, made similar comments on Iranian state TV on Friday, declaring that, “today we are enjoying deterrence, meaning that we have dissuaded the enemy from attack.”The comments are not unusual for Iranian military chiefs, who routinely deride the US’s military capabilities, but were made in this case in apparent response to a number of hawkish statements recently made by American officials towards Iran, including remarks by US President Donald Trump.Following an Iranian test of a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead in January, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on a number of entities involved in Iran’s missile program, with the president warning Iran that it had been “put on notice” and vowing that “nothing is off the table” in terms of a military response to perceived Iranian provocations.Although the missile test did not violate the 2015 nuclear accord, the US government said such tests are forbidden under a separate UN resolution forbidding Iran from developing nuclear-capable missiles.Pakpour also said Saturday that the Revolutionary Guards would conduct military drills next week, despite warnings from the US and the sanctions over the previous missile test.“The maneuvers called ‘Grand Prophet 11’ will start Monday and last three days,” Pakpour told a news conference. He said rockets would be used without specifying which kind. There has been an increase in tensions between Iran and the US since Trump’s inauguration in January, with the president repeating his criticism of the 2015 nuclear deal signed between Iran and world powers under former president Barack Obama.During the presidential campaign, Trump vowed to rip up what he termed the “disastrous” nuclear accord with Iran. Since becoming president, he has seemingly walked back his pledge to dismantle the agreement, although he has continued to call it “one of the worst deals I’ve ever seen.”US Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday continued with the administration’s hard line against Iran, telling an international security conference in Munich that Tehran was “the leading state sponsor of terrorism.” He also accused the Iranian regime of working to destabilize the entire Middle East, in part due to the terms of the nuclear deal.“Thanks to the end of nuclear-related sanctions under the [deal], Iran now has additional resources to devote to these efforts,” Pence said.“Let me be clear again: Under President Trump the United States will remain fully committed to ensuring that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon capable of threatening our countries, our allies in the region, especially Israel,” Pence said.Earlier this week, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the US of seeking to ratchet up tensions with Iran over its nuclear program in order to distract from what he called the “war of economy” against the Islamic Republic.“The US wants to divert the Iranian officials’ attention from the real battlefield, that is the war of economy, by repeating the trick of military threat and war; officials should keep vigilant,” Khamenei said Wednesday, according to Fars.Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.

Islamic State claims five members killed in Israeli drone strike-Terror group says cell targeted Saturday in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula; no immediate comment from IDF-By Times of Israel staff February 19, 2017, 11:43 pm

The Islamic State’s official media outlet claimed Sunday five of its members were killed in an Israeli military airstrike in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula the day before.According to Amaq news agency, an official media arm of the terror group, an Israeli drone strike struck a car with five Islamic State members in a village in the northern Sinai near the Egypt-Israel border on Saturday. The strike occurred near the village of Shabana, south of the town of Rafah, Amaq said. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond to The Times of Israel’s request for comment, but generally refrains from confirming or denying strikes outside of Israel. The reported attack came after tensions between Israel and the Islamic State’s affiliate in Sinai ratcheted up earlier this month. On February 8, the group, known as the Sinai Province, shot four rockets at the southern Israeli city of Eilat.Three of the four rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile system, the army said.A military spokesperson said the fourth rocket was not shot down by the missile defense battery as it was headed toward an open field.Sinai Province claimed the rocket attack on Eilat early the next day.February 9 also saw two Palestinians killed in a mysterious explosion in Rafah, which the Hamas terror group claimed was the result of an Israeli airstrike carried out in retaliation for the rockets.Israel denied it had carried out any airstrikes in the area. The Islamic State in Sinai has been waging a bloody battle against Egyptian forces in recent years.Last month, Israel ordered all of its citizens in the Sinai Peninsula to leave immediately due to security threats.

ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Singapore PM, hosting Netanyahu, endorses ‘two-state’ plan-Lee Hsien Loong says direct negotiations between Israel and Palestinians only way to ‘bring peace and security to both peoples’-By ANNABELLE LIANG February 20, 2017, 7:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

SINGAPORE (AP) — Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, hosting a visit by his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, said Monday his country believes in a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Lee explained his stand at a joint news briefing with Netanyahu, who despite previously endorsing the two-state solution currently heads a coalition government comprised of many opposed to a Palestinian state. Lee said he realizes a two-state solution is difficult to achieve, but said it is the only way to achieve peace.Netanyahu’s official visit is the first to Singapore by an Israeli head of government since former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin visited the city-state for an unofficial visit in 1993. Last year Lee became the first Singaporean prime minister to visit Israel.Netanyahu referred to Singapore and Israel at the news conference as “kindred spirits.” Both nations are small, with significant defense and high-tech industries. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1969, but have ties dating back to 1965, when Israeli military advisers covertly assisted Singapore after its declaration of independence.Acknowledging the “very complex situation” between Palestinians and Israel, Lee called for direct negotiations that will ensure “progress toward a just and durable solution to this long-standing and often, unfortunately violent conflict.”“We have consistently believed that a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, however hard to achieve, is the only way to bring peace and security to both peoples,” Lee said.Netanyahu did not mention tensions in the Middle East in his remarks at the news briefing, after which questions were not allowed. But afterward, at a state dinner, he said he believes there is an opportunity to seek peace now “because I sense a great change in the Arab world, in many Arab countries, and I hope … to be able to use that newfound attitude toward Israel to help us solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as well.”Despite calling for the help of Arab countries in the region to help achieve an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, the Haaretz daily reported on Monday that Netanyahu rejected a regional peace plan for the renewal of negotiations toward a two-state solution in 2016 pushed for by former US secretary of state John Kerry. Netanyahu said Sunday, following the publication of the report, that the initiative was his idea. The two-state approach, in which negotiations aim to lead to an independent Palestinian nation, has wide international support, including from Arab nations. It would require Israel to give up territory in the West Bank that is both strategically and religiously significant to the Jewish state.A two-state solution has anchored American diplomacy in the Middle East for decades. When US President Donald Trump hosted Netanyahu last week, the American leader seemed to walk back the US commitment to a two-state solution, saying “I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like,” although administration officials have since said the US remains fully committed to a two-state solution as the outcome of any peace deal.Netanyahu also said Israel was pivoting toward Asia “in a very clear and purposeful way.”“Next month I’ll go to China. Somewhat later this year, Prime Minister Modi of India will come to visit Israel,” he said. Poised in the middle, he said, is Singapore, “our perfect partner.”Netanyahu departs for Australia on Tuesday.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Minister close to Netanyahu insists the PM still backs two-state solution-Tzachi Hanegbi, who holds regional cooperation portfolio, says Netanyahu has not changed his mind, calls status quo ‘a Palestinian tragedy’-By Marissa Newman February 20, 2017, 7:24 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi said Monday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is still committed to the two-state solution, as outlined in a 2009 Bar Ilan University speech, in which he publicly declared his support for that framework as the way to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.“It did not change since then. It’s still [the] valid policy of the prime minister of Israel and therefore the government of Israel,” Hanegbi told visiting Jewish American leaders in the Knesset, referring to Netanyahu’s address. “The principles of the Bar Ilan speech became more relevant today than at the time they were given. The Middle East is not the Middle East of 2009.”Debate over Netanyahu’s position on the two-state solution was ignited after US President Donald Trump appeared to withdraw the US’s previous sole commitment for the plan in comments he made during a press conference, held with Netanyahu last week, in which Trump said the US would look at any solution the Israelis and Palestinians agreed on.“I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like,” Trump said at their joint White House press conference before the two men sat down for talks. Trump’s comments appeared to buck two decades of US policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that was based on the two-state solution, although the president’s UN envoy Nikki Haley said the next day that US “absolutely” supports the two-state solution.Hanegbi interpreted Trump’s comment saying he will back one state or two states, whatever the parties seek, as no indication that the president is withdrawing US support for the two-state formula. Rather, Trump was emphasizing that he is unlike his predecessor, former US president Barack Obama, and was saying “‘Hey guys, I’m not going to impose anything on you,'” Hanegbi argued. He pointed to Haley’s subsequent reaffirmation of US support for the two-state solution to underline the point. The regional cooperation minister said the Palestinian peace deal must be similar to the peace accords with Jordan and Egypt — hammered out by the sides through direct talks. The Egypt peace deal is now “becoming more and more relevant to both countries,” he noted. The Jordan peace accord is “working, functioning, and more relevant more and more by the day,” he later added.Hanegbi said Israel wants to see the Palestinians “come down from the tree they climbed” and return to the negotiation table. The minister said there are several principles that Israel will never compromise on: the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, no “right of return” for Palestinian refugees, and an Israeli security presence in the Jordan Valley. Netanyahu, in the US last week, stressed the imperative for the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, and for Israel to maintain overall security control throughout the West Bank, as integral elements of any accord.Hanegbi — who also received the communications portfolio on Monday, after Netanyahu temporarily relinquished the portfolio — said a bi-national, Israeli-Palestinian state is “out of the question.”“One state will never happen. No Israeli leader will allow Israel to become a potentially Arab state in the future,” he said. No Israeli leader will “shatter the Jewish dream, the Zionist dream… This is out of the question,” he added.Hanegbi asserted the status quo can continue for decades to come, but Israel does not seek such an outcome. The status quo is “a tragedy, but it’s not our tragedy. It’s a Palestinian tragedy,” the minister said.“We can accept another 50 years of stalemate,” he continued, but added that “we don’t want it.”Hanegbi also praised Trump’s stance on the Iran nuclear deal, remarking that “we do see this agreement as jeopardizing Israel’s existence” if implemented without any changes. When the deal expires, there will be an “empire with vicious ambitions that the world recognizes its nuclear capabilities and allows it to produce and enrich uranium without limitations,” Hanegbi said. Iran will then have “100 nuclear bombs really in no time.”Israel is happy Trump “shares this view,” Hanegnbi told the visiting Jewish leaders, and vowed that “this is a fight that we are not going to give up.”His comments came after earlier Monday Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman rejected Trump’s implication during his press conference with Netanyahu last week that a single state would be a viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, should the two sides agree to it.Liberman said that Israel cannot annex the Palestinians living in the West Bank if it wants to remain a Jewish state. He went on to invoke his long-held two-state plan under which some Israeli Arab towns would become part of a future Palestinian state.

Veteran Israeli diplomat predicts premature end to Trump presidency-Ex-Foreign Ministry chief Shlomo Avineri says president’s behavior, personality make it unlikely he will see out his term-By Times of Israel staff and Agencies February 18, 2017, 6:58 pm

The veteran former head of Israel’s Foreign Ministry Shlomo Avineri said Saturday that he does not believe Donald Trump will serve out his four-year term, following a rocky start to his presidency that saw his national security advisor ousted, a cabinet nominee withdraw, a centerpiece immigration policy thwarted by the courts and a tidal wave of damaging leaks.Speaking at a cultural event in Mevasseret Zion, Avineri, now a political science professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that Trump’s behavior and personality would make it unlikely that he would see out his term, Israel Radio reported. This is not the first time that Avineri has called into question Trump’s fitness for the role of leader of the free world. Writing in the liberal Haaretz daily last month, the professor lashed out at the president as a racist and sexist authoritarian.Trump is “not a president of the conservative Republican model akin to [Richard] Nixon or [Ronald] Reagan, but an unprecedented figure in American politics,” Avineri wrote. “It is clear to all that this is a person with aggressive characteristics, rude, racist and misogynistic, who made his fortune (if indeed he does have equity and not just debt) through means that one could call questionable at the very least. Sometimes it appears that he sees his success in reaching the White House as another step in the promotion of his family’s business affairs.”He added: “There has never been a president like this, not in the United States or any democratic country: It is not his views, but his behavior that will determine the character of his presidency — and the fate of the world.”Avineri — who during his career also headed the Israeli delegation to the UNESCO General Assembly and took part in Israeli negotiations with Egypt — also cast doubt on the ability of the American political system to contain what he said were Trump’s “authoritarian” tendencies.“It is not certain that the checks and balances of the US Constitution are strong enough to restrain him,” he wrote.Meanwhile, world leaders, diplomats and defense officials were getting their first opportunity to meet with members of the new administration this weekend, amid concerns over the new president’s commitment to NATO and posture toward Russia.Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly were leading the US delegation to the Munich Security Conference, which began Friday. The annual weekend gathering is known for providing an open and informal platform for allies — and adversaries — to meet in close quarters.Chancellor Angela Merkel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, European Council President Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg were among the group of more than 30 heads of state and government, 80 foreign and defense ministers and other officials in attendance.Trump set off alarm bells last month by calling NATO “obsolete,” though has subsequently told European leaders he agrees on the “fundamental importance” of the military alliance. He has emphasized the need for all members to pay a fair share for defense, an issue that NATO leaders themselves have pushed for years.Mattis told the alliance’s 27 other defense ministers in Brussels on Wednesday that Trump has “strong support for NATO” and assured Stoltenberg that “the alliance remains a fundamental bedrock for the United States.”Other stances — Trump’s support for Britain’s decision to leave the EU, his perceived closeness to Russia and inaugural pledge to put “America first” — also have raised “an unbelievable number of question marks,” conference organizer Wolfgang Ischinger, a former German ambassador to the US, said.

Russia calls for end to Western-dominated world order-At Munich conference, Lavrov says it is time for Washington to adopt ‘pragmatic’ relations with Moscow based on ‘mutual respect,’ calls NATO a relic of the Cold War-By AFP and AP February 18, 2017, 2:41 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called Saturday for an end to a world order dominated by the West and said Moscow wanted to establish a “pragmatic” relationship with the United States.Lavrov was speaking at the Munich Security Conference shortly after US Vice President Mike Pence told the audience Washington remained “unwavering” in its commitment to the US-led NATO military alliance as it faced a more assertive Russia.Lavrov said that the time when the West called the shots was over and, dismissing NATO as a relic of the Cold War, added: “I hope that (the world) will choose a democratic world order — a post-West one — in which each country is defined by its sovereignty.”Lavrov said Moscow wanted to build relations with Washington which would be “pragmatic with mutual respect and acknowledgement of our responsibility for global stability.”The two countries had never been in direct conflict, he said, noting that they were actually close neighbours across the Baring Straits.Russia wanted to see a “common space of good neighbor relations from Vancouver to Vladivostok,” he added.Earlier at the conference Pence vowed to “hold Russia accountable” even as President Donald Trump searches for new common ground with Moscow at the start of his presidency.Pence, in an address to the Munich Security Conference, also offered assurances to European allies that the US “strongly supports” NATO. He said the US would be “unwavering” in its commitment to trans-Atlantic institutions like NATO.In his first overseas trip as vice president, Pence sought to calm nervous European allies who remain concerned about Russian aggression and have been alarmed by Trump’s positive statements about Russian President Vladimir Putin. The address to foreign diplomats and security officials also sought to reassure international partners who worry that Trump may pursue isolationist tendencies.Pence said the US would demand that Russia honor a 2015 peace deal agreed upon in Minsk, Belarus, to end violence in eastern Ukraine between government forces and Russia-backed separatists.“Know this: The United States will continue to hold Russia accountable, even as we search for new common ground which as you know President Trump believes can be found,” Pence said.Pence met afterward with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who addressed the conference just before the vice president. Merkel stressed the need to maintain international alliances and told the audience, with Pence seated a few feet away, that NATO is “in the American interest.”European countries along Russia’s border are rattled by the prospect of deeper US-Russia ties after Trump suggested sanctions imposed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea could be eased in exchange for a nuclear weapons deal, and after the president referred to NATO as “obsolete” in an interview before his inauguration. Trump has since tempered his language, stressing the importance of the NATO alliance during his telephone conversations with foreign leaders.Pence also scheduled meetings Saturday with the leaders of the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko — countries dealing with the threat of Russian incursion. Pence also planned to meet with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. The visit, which includes a stop in Brussels on Sunday and Monday, comes amid worries in Europe about Russian aggression, Trump’s relationship with Putin and whether the new president may promote isolationist tendencies through his “America First” mantra. In his remarks, Pence also reinforced the Trump administration’s message that NATO members must spend more on defense.NATO’s 28-member countries committed in 2014 to spending 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense within a decade. But only the US and four other members of the post-World War II military coalition are meeting the standard, Pence said.Failure to meet the commitment, he said, “erodes the very foundation of our alliance.”“Let me be clear on this point: The president of the United States expects our allies to keep their word, to fulfill this commitment and, for most, that means the time has come to do more,” Pence said.
