France plays down Paris Middle East peace talks prospects-[Reuters]-By John Irish-YAHOONEWS-January 12, 2017
PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande sought to play down the prospects of Middle East peace talks in Paris on Sunday, saying only direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians could resolve the long-standing conflict.France has over the last year tried to breathe new life into the peace process, holding a preliminary conference in June where the United Nations, European Union, United States and major Arab countries gathered to try to revive moribund talks. Some 70 countries and organisations are due in Paris for a meeting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected as "futile".Hollande, giving his last speech to the foreign diplomatic corps before stepping down in May, said the objective was to reaffirm the support of the international community for a two-state solution and ensure that it remained a reference."I can see that this has been weakened on the ground and in the minds. If we let it whither away then it would be a risk for Israeli's security to which we are resolutely attached."However, I am realistic on what this conference can achieve. Peace will only be done by the Israelis and Palestinians and by nobody else. Only bilateral negotiations can succeed."France, which had invited Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to meet Hollande to discuss the results of the conference, believes that with uncertainty surrounding how the next U.S. administration will handle the issue it is important to push the sides back to talks.Abbas is due in Paris on Sunday, although a meeting with Hollande has yet to be confirmed.A draft communique for the meeting seen by Reuters calls on both sides to "restate their commitment to the two-state solution and to disavow official voices on their side that reject this solution. It also asks the protagonists to "refrain from unilateral steps that prejudge the outcome of final status negotiations in order to rebuild trust and create a path back to meaningful direct negotiations."Netanyahu said in public remarks on Thursday: "It's a rigged conference, rigged by the Palestinians with French auspices to adopt additional anti-Israel stances. This pushes peace backwards."It's not going to obligate us. It's a relic of the past, it's a last gasp of the past before the future sets in."U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has suggested he would be more favourable toward Israel than President Barack Obama, who said on Tuesday Netanyahu's policy backing settlements in occupied territory was making a future Palestinian state impossible.Washington did not exercise its veto in December to stop a U.N. Security Council resolution that demands an end to Israeli settlement building.(Addditional reporting by Maayan Lubell; Editing by Sudip Kar-Gupta and Janet Lawrence)
Netanyahu condemns Paris summit as 'rigged' against Israel-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 12, 2017
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's prime minister on Thursday condemned an upcoming conference in Paris aimed at reviving peace talks with the Palestinians."It's a rigged conference, rigged by the Palestinians with French auspices to adopt additional anti-Israel stances," Benjamin Netanyahu said during a meeting with Norway's foreign minister. "This pushes peace backwards. It's not going to obligate us. It's a relic of the past."French President Francois Hollande said Sunday's peace conference in Paris aims at ensuring the support of the international community for the two-state solution as a reference for future direct negotiations."Peace will be achieved by Israelis and Palestinians, and nobody else. Only bilateral negotiations can succeed", Hollande said in a speech to diplomats, adding that the abandonment of the two-state solution would undermine Israel's security. He said the Jan. 15 conference will push for concrete solutions to help develop energy, transportation and city infrastructure to benefit Israelis and Palestinians. French authorities are expecting 72 countries to attend the conference— but not Israel or the Palestinians. The Palestinians, who in recent years have campaigned for the international community to assume a greater role in resolving the conflict, have welcomed the French initiative.Netanyahu insists the conflict can only be resolved in direct peace talks and has repeatedly called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to resume them. Abbas refuses unless Israel ends settlement construction first. The U.S. mediated the last round of talks, which collapsed in 2014.

We shall have World Government, whether or not we like it. The only question is whether World Government will be achieved by conquest or consent.James Paul Warburg appearing before the Senate on 7th February 1950
Like a famous WWII Belgian General,Paul Henry Spock said in 1957:We need no commission, we have already too many. What we need is a man who is great enough to be able to keep all the people in subjection to himself and to lift us out of the economic bog into which we threaten to sink. Send us such a man. Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.

Mystic Rabbi’s Visions of Trump: Obama’s Betrayal Reversed, UN Will Fall, Europe Will Burn-By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz January 12, 2017 , 12:30 pm-breakingisraelnews
“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy your old men shall dream dreams your young men shall see visions.” Joel 3:1 (The Israel Bible™)(Breaking Israel News) On the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th president of the United States, Rabbi Nir Ben Artzi, a prominent mystic and spiritual leader, made several startling predictions this week concerning the impending transfer of power and the changes in store for America, Israel, and the world.“The media will discover that outgoing President Barack Obama is a traitor,” Rabbi Ben Artzi told Kikar HaShabbat, a Hebrew language news service for Orthodox Jews. “Obama, like an injured beast, helped Hillary Clinton whose sole intention was to continue his agenda.”The spiritual leader, who has a dedicated following in Israel, said that while Obama will attempt to thwart Trump, it won’t work.“Before he leaves, Obama wants to destroy everyone and everything Trump loves, so that when Trump does take power, it will be difficult for him to cope with everything that Obama ruined,” Rabbi Ben Artzi predicted. “This is Obama’s revenge on Trump.”Indeed, Trump and Obama disagree on many major issues, and the incoming president has vowed to roll back several of the his predecessor’s policies, including the nuclear deal Obama brokered with Iran. In response, the White House announced this week that it had approved the sale of 130 tons of Russian uranium to Iran, enough to make ten nuclear bombs. This, along with several other last-minute moves by the outgoing president, may make it seem like Trump’s efforts will be futile, but Rabbi Ben Artzi said that Trump will have an ace card hard to beat.“When Trump takes office, he will receive help directly from Heaven that will enable him overcome these obstacles, and bring peace to the world,” Rabbi Ben Artzi declared. “And for this reason, Trump will succeed greatly.”The rabbi also addressed the recent UN resolution passed on December 23, the eve of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Resolution 2334 declared it illegal for Jews to live in Judea, Samaria, the Golan, Hebron, and East Jerusalem. But while it has been US policy for over 30 years to veto anti-Israel resolutions in the UN, President Obama abstained from voting, thereby allowing the resolution to pass.Rabbi Ben Artzi believes that the timing of the resolution was divinely significant, mirroring the conditions of the Maccabees, whose oppression by the Greeks 2,000 years ago led to the miracle of Hanukkah and the restoration of the Temple.“God arranged it that the United Nations Security Council decision, advanced by Obama, would fall on the first candle of Hanukkah,” the rabbi explained. “This was in order for the Jews to receive it in the same spirit as the Jews thousands of years ago when evil decrees were placed on Israel.”Like many other modern political thinkers, the rabbi dismissed the UN as irrelevant. “Every decision the UN has made is meaningless. They will all be cancelled out and are already erased in Heaven. The resolution will fall, just as the United Nations itself will fall.”Rabbi Ben Artzi also addressed the international conference that will take place in Paris on Sunday, where it is expected that the 70 nations gathered will vote to create a Palestinian State in Judea and Samaria. Rabbi Ben Artzi predicted that the resolution would have disastrous repercussions for the countries that support it.“Every nation that tries to take away parts of Israel, the nation and the people will be destroyed,” he warned, citing Psalms.Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. Psalms 37:15-Rabbi Ben Artzi explained that the motivation behind the anti-Israel conference was for the European nations to curry favor with Islam, but this attempt was doomed.“Europe and all the other nations believe that if they hate Israel, all of the Muslims will become their allies and cease attacking them from within,” the rabbi explained. “They are wrong about that. Muslims will continue to fill up Europe by the millions. At this point, whether they help or hurt Israel, Europe will be ashes.“This is the last period of suffering for the Jews. From now on, it will only get better and better,” the rabbi assured his followers.
Ex-British spy said to go into hiding after Trump dossier leaks-Former MI6 agent who claimed Russia has compromising info on president-elect flees home fearing for life, according to report-By Times of Israel staff January 12, 2017, 11:03 am
The former spy who compiled the dossier on US President-elect Donald Trump’s ties to Russia went into hiding before his name was released, according to reports early Thursday. The dossier, which alleges that Trump’s aides colluded with the Kremlin ahead of the US election, and that Russia has compromising information of a sexual nature about Trump, was compiled by Christopher Steele, a former intelligence agent.Steele, 52, fled his home Wednesday, according to a report in Britain’s The Daily Telegraph. A source told the Telegraph that Steele fears a backlash from Moscow. The source described him as “terrified for his safety,” according to the report.Steele is married with children. His wife and family have also disappeared from home, the Telegraph said.“He asked me to look after his cat as he would be gone for a few days,” a neighbor told the Telegraph. “I’m not sure where he’s gone or how to contact him. I don’t really know much about him except to say hello.“We’re all pretty secretive round here to be honest. All I know is he runs some sort of consultancy business.”Steele, a former MI6 officer, compiled the report, which was published on Tuesday, instantly igniting a firestorm around Trump, who derided its findings as “fake” and called those who put it together “sick.”American media and politicians have been in possession of versions of the 35-page report for months but, unable to corroborate its claims, had declined to publish it.On Tuesday, after several media reported that Trump had been briefed on the allegations circulating about him, BuzzFeed news took the controversial step of publishing the dossier in full — while admitting it is “unverified.”The 35 pages consist of memos compiled by Steele before and after the November 8 election, after he was hired to produce opposition research on the Trump campaign, first by a Republican rival of Trump and then later by people tied to Hillary Clinton’s Democratic campaign.Steele is the director of British consultancy Orbis Business Intelligence, which according to its website “was founded in 2009 by former British intelligence professionals.”Orbis describes itself as “London based, but with a global footprint, our core strength is our ability to meld a high–level source network with a sophisticated investigative capability. We provide strategic advice, mount intelligence–gathering operations and conduct complex, often cross–border investigations.”On Friday US intelligence chiefs, briefing Trump on allegations of Russian interference in the election, reportedly included a two-page summary of the most credible claims from the dossier. That classified summary has been shown only to Trump, President Barack Obama, and a group of senators from the Senate Intelligence Committee.Trump angrily dismissed the report as a fabrication, telling a news conference: “It’s all fake news. It’s phony stuff. It didn’t happen.”And he slammed US intelligence for allowing the information to leak.“I think it was disgraceful — disgraceful that the intelligence agencies allowed any information that turned out to be so false and fake out,” Trump charged. “I say that that’s something that Nazi Germany would have done.” Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to "leak" into the public. One last shot at me.Are we living in Nazi Germany? — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 11, 2017-The dossier includes unsubstantiated claims that Russians possess videos involving prostitutes, filmed during a 2013 visit by Trump to a luxury Moscow hotel for the Miss Universe contest, supposedly as a potential means for blackmail. It also alleges that Trump advisers including his lawyer Michael Cohen maintained regular contact with Russian officials and others linked to Russian intelligence during the election and have been exchanging information for “at least” eight years.Responding to Trump’s comments White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that the president-elect could easily refute many of the claims in the dossier by releasing his financial information.“They’ve not been transparent,” he said of Trump and his advisers. “Many of the questions that have been raised have been about potential financial entanglements of the president-elect and his family and business in Russia. There’s ample evidence they could marshal to make public to refute those accusations that they say are baseless. But they refuse to do so. That kind of secrecy only serves to sow public doubt.”AFP contributed to this report.
After recording leaks, Azaria lawyer says army scared of appeal-Attorney charges that military fears review of evidence will cast doubt on soldier’s manslaughter conviction, highlight failures in chain of command-By Times of Israel staff January 12, 2017, 9:50 am
The defense team for an IDF soldier convicted of manslaughter for killing a disarmed Palestinian attacker said Thursday that the army tried to convince the soldier’s father to fire his attorneys and drop a planned appeal because the military is afraid of what would come to light during the process. On Wednesday night, Channel 2 news published a recording of Col. Guy Hazut, the commander of the Kfir Brigade, attempting to convince Elor Azaria’s father not to pursue an appeal.Last week, the Jaffa Military Court convicted Sgt. Elor Azaria, 20, of manslaughter in the fatal shooting last March of Palestinian stabber Abdel Fattah al-Sharif in the West Bank city of Hebron. Azaria’s sentencing is scheduled for January 15.Channel 2 on Tuesday reported the fact of the secret conversation between Charlie Azaria and Hazut, who commands the brigade Azaria serves in, drawing a swift denial from the IDF. Azaria’s attorneys, who were not invited to the meeting, said Thursday that the recording proves the army is attempting to interfere in the legal process.“It is blatant and crude interference that was done at a very late stage after the same battalion commander didn’t pick up the phone even once to the soldier or his family to ask how they are for 10 months, and now he calls them up as though he wants to help them,” Azaria’s lawyer Ilan Katz told Israel Radio.“I don’t believe that the officer acted on his own accord,” he said, noting that Hazut had offered Charlie Azaria a meeting the very same evening with senior IDF figures.“In my opinion, they are very worried that appeal process will first of all reveal the wrong and tendentious conviction, and then the evidence for an acquittal will be brought up again, and the faulty behavior of the chain of command, and they want to avoid that,” Katz said. The IDF has denied that the meeting was about the sentencing, charging that the conversation was about offering possible assistance to the family. In the recorded conversation, Hazut implies that the best option for the convicted soldier would be to drop any appeal and consider replacing the defense team.Katz noted that since, during the meeting, Hazut pointed out that he can’t guarantee anything, it showed that the real purpose was to try and convince Charlie Azaria to abandon the defense team.“There is a way to make offers,” Katz said. “We would have been very happy if even once the chief military prosecutor would have bothered to tell his people to meet with us. That is how things are done in a proper system.”He confirmed he was willing to negotiate with the army, but only through the proper legal channels. In the meeting Azaria insisted that his son did nothing wrong and should serve no jail time, while Hazut stressed that the best course of action would be to not appeal the verdict.“I don’t want my son at the age of 21 to have manslaughter on his record while he was serving the state and did nothing [wrong],” Azaria responded in the recording.“I can tell you,” said Hazut, “that the chances of that type of appeal being accepted… are very weak.”Azaria asked whether the army could release his son from jail and send him home, which he presented as a condition for accepting any kind of deal to drop the appeal.Hazut told him there was very little likelihood of that. “I don’t want to mislead you, this will not end without some time in jail. But it is a question of alternatives.”In a letter to Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Wednesday morning, Azaria’s attorneys Eyal Besserglick and Katz denounced the meeting, saying it was “crossing a red line.”“We discovered to our amazement that improper contacts were made by senior IDF persons… to the father of our client in order to cause him to replace his attorney and likewise to refrain from a future appeal in this case, while also making various assurances — things that could seemingly be a criminal offense,” the letter read.By law, there are two ways Azaria may obtain a pardon. All convicts, including soldiers, can appeal to the president of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, for a pardon. Soldiers can also turn to the IDF chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, who has the legal power to issue pardons for active-duty personnel. On Tuesday, Liberman alluded to efforts aimed at resolving the divisive issue, writing on his Facebook page that those calling for an immediate pardon and protesting the conviction should keep quiet, as they were doing more harm to Azaria than good.“We all know that on one side [of this case] there’s a decorated soldier and on the other there’s a terrorist who came to kill Jews,” Liberman wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.“We’re doing everything to safeguard both the ethics of the IDF and the soldier Azaria. Anything else only does harm,” he said.Since the verdict was announced last week, Liberman, who voiced support for Azaria before taking up the Defense Ministry post last year, has called on Israelis to respect the court’s decision and asked the soldier’s attorneys to agree to a deal in which they forgo filing an appeal in exchange for a lighter sentence. Many right-wing politicians, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have called for Azaria to be pardoned, as has former Labor leader MK Shelly Yachimovich (Zionist Union).
Taliban release video showing American, Australian captives-Hostages deliver message on behalf of captors, ask Trump to arrange prisoner exchange to secure their freedom-By AP January 12, 2017, 4:11 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban released a video Wednesday showing an American and an Australian who were kidnapped in August, the first time they have been seen since their abduction. The two men, an American identified as Kevin King and an Australian identified as Timothy Weekes, were abducted outside the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul, where they worked as teachers.US officials said in September that American forces had launched a rescue mission, but the captives weren’t at the raided location. In the video, sent to media by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, the pair appears pale and unshaven. They say they are speaking on Jan. 1. In the video, apparently delivering a message on behalf of the kidnappers, they ask US President-elect Donald Trump to offer a prisoner exchange to secure their freedom.State Department spokesman Mark Toner said US authorities were studying the video and could not confirm its authenticity. He declined to comment on the case, citing privacy considerations, but he added: “Taking and holding civilian hostages is reprehensible and we condemn such actions in the strongest terms.”Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade declined to comment on the video.
Highway to her-Jerusalem street signs get feminist makeover-Historical women recognized for being more than just wives and mothers-By Renee Ghert-Zand January 12, 2017, 1:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
Week after week, Jerusalem resident Hadas Levmore was infuriated as she passed the sign for Beruriyah Street on her way to synagogue. The street was named for a female Talmudic sage greatly admired for her breadth of knowledge, but the sign made no mention of Beruriyah’s great intellectual accomplishments. Rather, it only stated she was the wife of Rabbi Meir, also a venerated Talmudic sage.A boon to history buffs, Jerusalem’s street signs often include a one- or two-line biographical description of the person the street is named for. But for anyone with a feminist consciousness, reading these can be an exercise in frustration.Change us on its way as citizens increasingly take action: the signs on Beruriyah Street and on Ruth Street have already been updated in the last couple of weeks.Back in October 2015, an angry Levmore decided she wasn’t going to take it anymore. She considered printing up stickers with a biography highlighting the sage’s accomplishments (and making no mention of her marital status or husband’s name), and affixing them to the street signs.“They’d just get washed off when the rainy winter weather came,” she said. So she thought better of the guerrilla tactic and decided to contact City Hall.It turned out that the Jerusalem Municipality website already had an excellent biography of Beruriyah in its online database of street names. However, Levmore still had to submit a formal request for a sign change to the Municipality’s Names Committee. In the meantime, Roni Hazon Weiss, a board member for the Jerusalem civic organization and political party Yerushalmim, was lobbying the Names Committee to change the biographical information for the signs on Ruth Street. It was time to say that she herself was the heroine of a biblical book, and not only the wife of landowner Boaz’s and the great-grandmother of King David. It took a year and a half of patient follow up after their initial complaints to the city for both Levmore and Weiss to finally see results. They hope things will move more quickly for the other signs for streets named for female historical and biblical figures — but they’re not holding their breath.“It’s a matter of building public awareness, and also awareness among the members of the Names Committee. It took us a year and a half for these two streets, and it was a full four years ago that we started talking about this issue as part of Yerushalmim’s campaign against the exclusion of women from the public sphere,” said Weiss.Back in March 2013 a group of high school students took it upon themselves to write new biographical statements for 11 Jerusalem streets named for women. They printed up the new signs and taped them up. It seems neither the signs nor the students’ fervor for pushing the matter survived.Weiss, principal of a Jerusalem high school, is considering reviving the project with some of her current students. While they’re at it, they could also come up with suggestions for more streets named for women. According to Weiss, currently only 7 percent of streets in Israel’s capital city are named for women. Plenty of ideas have already been shared on a Facebook page called Rehov MiShela (A Street Of Her Own). But before they start naming new streets, there are still plenty of fixes to make with existing ones. Take Berenice Street, for example. Berenice was a queen of Judah during the Second Temple period. The sign on her street says she was a king.
