India PM likens army’s ‘surgical strikes’ to IDF operations-Narendra Modi praises military for Kashmir offensive, says armed forces no less capable than Israeli army-By Times of Israel staff October 19, 2016, 4:35 pm

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week compared his army’s “surgical strikes” against Pakistani rebels during a recent offensive in the disputed Kashmir region to the operations of the Israeli military.“Our army’s valor is being discussed across the country these days. We used to hear earlier that Israel has done this. The nation has seen that Indian army is no less than anybody,” Modi said at a military rally Tuesday, according to Indian news reports. The prime minister’s remarks came a week after government forces killed two suspected Pakistani rebels holed up inside a government compound the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir in a fierce three-day standoff.Kashmir is experiencing its largest protests against Indian rule in recent years, sparked by the killing in July of a popular rebel commander by Indian soldiers.More than 80 civilians have been killed and thousands injured, with hundreds among them blinded and maimed, mostly by government forces firing bullets and shotgun pellets at rock-throwing protesters.Rebel attacks on government forces have also increased in recent weeks. On Saturday militants attacked a police post in the southern Kashmir valley, killing one officer.India and Pakistan each administer part of Kashmir, but both claim the Himalayan territory in its entirety. Most people in the Indian-controlled portion favor independence or a merger with Pakistan.Rebel groups have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989. More than 68,000 people have been killed in the armed uprising and ensuing Indian military crackdown.Modi and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have made bilateral cooperation key points for their respective foreign policies.Since 1999 India has become the largest buyer of Israeli military equipment. In October 2014, India agreed to a $525 million deal to buy Israel’s guided Spike missiles, which were widely used by the IDF during that summer’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza.Agencies contributed to this report.

Police eject 8 Jewish worshipers from Temple Mount-Some 1,100 people visit Jerusalem holy site, among them 275 Jews; thousands attend Priestly Blessing ceremony at Western Wall-By Times of Israel staff October 19, 2016, 4:01 pm

The Israel Police said Wednesday that eight Jewish worshipers were removed from the Temple Mount for “violating the terms of the visit,” in an apparent reference to praying at the holy site, which is forbidden for non-Muslim visitors.Police said some 1,115 people visited the Temple Mount, where the two ancient Jewish temples stood, on Wednesday. Of that number, 275 were Jews.Police also said that tens of thousands attended the traditional biannual Priestly Blessing at the Western Wall, which abuts the Temple Mount, on Wednesday morning. The ceremony sees male descendants of the Kohanic priestly caste gathering to recite a benediction. It is performed daily by devout Jews at synagogues throughout Israel, while mass blessings at the Western Wall take place on Passover in the spring and the current festival of Sukkot. The Western Wall is the closest spot to the Temple Mount where Jews can pray.Jewish visits to the Mount, today occupied by the Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock, often spark tensions, and the Priestly Blessing ceremony took place amid tight security.Police arrested one Jewish teenager Wednesday morning who suspected of prostrating himself while ascending to the Temple Mount. The country’s two chief rabbis and the rabbi of the Western Wall received crowds at a large sukkah — a temporary structure erected for the duration of the festival in allusion to the booths that the Bible says the Israelites erected during the Exodus from Egypt. On Sunday, Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) called on all Israeli Jews to converge on the Western Wall for the Priestly Blessing to counter a controversial resolution passed by UNESCO’s member states that omitted Jewish ties to the Temple Mount and Western Wall.“This year, we’ll come, in our masses, to Jerusalem, to the Western Wall, to the Priestly Blessing. This Wednesday… we’ll all be there. We’ll send a clear message — nobody will separate us from our holy places,” wrote Deri in a Facebook post. The UNESCO resolution, proposed by Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar and Sudan, was adopted last week at the committee stage and ratified on Tuesday. It used only Muslim names for the holy sites of Jerusalem’s Old City and was harshly critical of Israel for what it termed “provocative abuses that violate the sanctity and integrity” of the area. The resolution drew angry condemnation from Israeli politicians from across the political spectrum.

Tel Aviv hospital isolates 4 babies carrying deadly bacteria-A new mother, her newborns and 2 other preemies found to have CRE bacteria, although none have fallen ill-By Times of Israel staff October 19, 2016, 5:48 pm

A deadly bacteria has been discovered in four premature babies and a new mother at a Tel Aviv hospital, media reported Wednesday. All five were isolated from other patients. The CRE (Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) was discovered in a woman who had just given birth to twins at the Ichilov Hospital, the Ynet news site reported. The bacteria was then subsequently discovered in her two babies and two other newborns in the premature baby ward.CRE is a bacteria that is frequently found in hospitals and very difficult to treat as it is resistant to most antibiotics. It can be fatal in up to 50 percent of people who become infected, according to the US Center for Disease Control. The hospital said that while all five patients were found to be carrying the bacteria, none of them had become ill. No other cases were discovered in the hospital.“All of us carry bacteria in our intestines, but this bacteria that was found among the premature babies is known to be antibiotic resistant,” Professor Dror Mandel, the director of the hospital’s neonatal unit, told the Walla news website. “It’s important to clarify that none of the babies are sick; they are just carrying.”“By isolating and treating the premature babies we ensured that no other baby was infected and we hope that we have stopped the spread of the bacteria,” Mandel said.

620 Syrian rebels quit besieged town near Damascus-After 3 years of devastating regime blockade, fighters and families evacuate Moadamiyat al-Sham under deal with Assad government-By AFP October 19, 2016, 4:59 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

DAMASCUS — Around 620 rebels and their families began evacuating a besieged town southwest of the Syrian capital on Wednesday under a deal with the government, a local official told AFP.“The buses of rebels have begun moving,” said Hassan Ghandour, a member of the local committee overseeing the deal in Moadamiyat al-Sham.He said the buses held rebels as well as their family members and would head to Idlib province, northwest of Damascus.Moadamiyet al-Sham has been under a devastating government siege since early 2013.Syria’s government has championed such local deals — which typically see rebels evacuated in exchange for an end to their encirclement — as a way to bring stability to the war-ravaged country.Another member of the local reconciliation committee who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity said the evacuees — rebels and civilians — numbered 2,100 people.Any remaining rebels would hand themselves in to Syrian authorities “to have their status regularized,” the member said.“Then, the Syrian army will enter the town and state institutions will return to it. Infrastructure like water and electricity networks will be repaired beginning on Sunday,” the member added.More than 300,000 people have been killed since Syria’s conflict erupted in March 2011.

Palestinian woman killed in attempt to stab officers — police-Alleged attacker approaches Tapuah Junction in West Bank, is shot after ignoring warning fire; no Israelis injured-By Times of Israel staff October 19, 2016, 1:31 pm

A Palestinian woman allegedly attempted a stabbing attack at the Tapuah Junction, south of Nablus in the West Bank, Wednesday, and was shot dead by Israeli police. There were no injuries to Israeli security forces or civilians.“Attempted stabbing at Tapuah Junction,” the Israel Police tweeted. “A short while ago a female suspect approached Border Police officers at the scene holding a knife. When she failed to heed their calls to halt, they shot and neutralized her.”In a subsequent statement confirming the alleged attacker was killed, police said officers fired warning shots in the air before opening fire on her. They said she was 19 years old, from the nearby village of Asira ash-Shamaliya.In the aftermath of the attack, the junction was closed to traffic. The junction has been the scene of several stabbing, shooting, and car-ramming attacks.Officials have feared a resurgence of a wave of stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks with the onset of the fall Jewish holiday season, when religious tensions often spike. Last week, two people were shot to death and several were wounded by a Palestinian terrorist in a shooting attack at Jerusalem’s Ammunition Hill.October 2015 marked the start of several months of near-daily attacks during which at least 34 Israelis were killed in a spate of Palestinian attacks. Over 200 Palestinians were also killed during that time, most of them attackers or involved in clashes with troops.

France vows to push Putin on extending Aleppo truce-UN stresses that it needs at least 48 hours to deliver desperately needed supplies and evacuate the wounded-By AFP October 19, 2016, 5:55 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

French President Francois Hollande vowed to work with Germany to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to back an extension of the ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo when the three leaders meet later Wednesday.“France will do everything it can to exert pressure, especially on supporters of the (Syrian) regime, such as the Russians, so that the ceasefire can be extended,” Hollande said before leaving for the meeting chaired by Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. The UN earlier on Wednesday dashed hopes that a prospective ceasefire in east Aleppo could provide humanitarian relief for besieged civilians, saying all sides needed to back an extended truce before aid convoys could roll.A plan to pause fighting for eight hours in rebel-held east Aleppo from 0500 GMT on Thursday has been announced by Assad regime ally Russia — with no word from the Damascus government that it intends to honor the deal.“Before we can do something really meaningful… we need assurances from all parties,” said Jens Laerke, spokesman for the United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) in Geneva.“We need a minimum of 48 hours,” he added, stressing that Russia’s time-limited deal would not be sufficient for UN teams to mobilize.Aside from getting desperately needed supplies to east Aleppo’s estimated 250,000 civilians, the UN also wants to evacuate hundreds of people in urgent need of medical care.UN and Red Cross trucks packed with aid for east Aleppo have been stalled near the Turkish border for weeks, waiting for guarantees that they can safely make deliveries.Moscow has said Thursday’s proposed truce could give civilians an opportunity to flee the city. There has been a pause in air strikes over east Aleppo since Tuesday, a lull Russia says could allow residents time to prepare to leave.Syrian and Russian jets have been bombarding the area in a brutal offensive to retake the key city from rebel fighters.Washington has voiced skepticism over the prospects for Thurday’s truce.
