Trump campaign opens 3rd Israeli office in Ramat Gan-Headquarters in Tel Aviv suburb to join Jerusalem, Modiin branches; fourth center planned for West Bank-By JTA August 25, 2016, 8:14 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this week opened a campaign office in the Tel Aviv suburb of Ramat Gan, his third in Israel. The Ramat Gan office opened Wednesday near the city’s diamond district will serve central Israel, in the Gush Dan and Sharon regions, Israel National News reported Thursday. It joins offices in Jerusalem and Modiin. A fourth office is scheduled to be opened in an undisclosed location in the West Bank. A fifth office may be added later, according to the report.“Offices are being opened, but more importantly we are getting dozens of inquiries from Americans and Israelis eager to join in the campaign,” Republicans Overseas Israel said late Wednesday in a post on its Facebook page. There are believed to be thousands of American Israelis who are eligible to vote in the US election, according to Israeli news reports. Many come from states with a high number of electoral votes, such as New York and California, or from swing states such as Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.Republicans hope to draw in those voters in an effort to put the swing states in Trump’s column. In 2012, a nonpartisan organization called iVoteIsrael worked to get out the vote among Americans in Israel. The organization was run by a former Republican operative, and an exit poll it conducted that year found that 85 percent of the 80,000 ballots cast in Israel went for Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate.Republican officials this year hope to replicate that effort with an explicitly partisan focus. They estimate that Trump will win the Israel vote by the same margin as Romney did in the last election.A Hebrew-language Trump campaign poster released earlier this month reads “Trump: In Israel’s interest.” The campaign has also launched a Hebrew-language Twitter feed.

Loaves fly as woman plows car into bakery-Vehicle appears to have accidentally been put into drive instead of reverse; worker says it’s a ‘miracle’ no one was hurt-By Times of Israel staff August 25, 2016, 6:35 pm

An Israeli woman accidentally plowed her car into a bakery in the central Israeli city of Ramle on Wednesday, causing serious property damage, but no injury. At approximately 7 p.m., the woman apparently put her car into drive instead of reverse, propelling her through the bakery’s front window, Channel 2 news reported. No one was standing near the window during the incident, which prevented any injuries.“Miraculously, no one was hurt. I was standing at the register and noticed the people there. When I saw them, I immediately understood that it was an accident, not a terror attack,” Yosef Cohen, a bakery employee, told the television channel. While no one was injured in the accident, a pregnant customer “almost miscarried from the commotion,” Cohen said.“A short while before there had been children there and it’s really luck that no one was hurt,” he said. After the accident, the bakery owners spoke with the city about having a barrier put in on the sidewalk to avoid such incidents in the future, Cohen added. In June, a similar incident occurred in Tel Aviv, in which a driver accidentally drove into a restaurant. Three people were killed and five were injured. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Ra’anana in central Israel, likely suffered a heart attack, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and veer onto the sidewalk, crashing into tables at Furama, an Asian restaurant on Ben Yehuda street.

Israeli study: Lunar calendar key to jellyfish arrival-Researchers surprised to find large increase in number of invertibrates on the days before and after full moon-By AFP August 25, 2016, 8:10 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Swimmers wanting to avoid being stung by jellyfish may want to watch the sky as much as the sea after Israeli researchers found a link between their arrival and the phase of the moon. The Israeli study found the lunar calendar is a key determinant of when jellyfish arrive on the Mediterranean country’s shores. In the middle of the lunar months — the days before and during the full moon — jellyfish are far more likely to swarm the beach, potentially stinging humans, the research found.“We were surprised by our findings,” researcher Avi Algazi told AFP. “We knew the moon has a big influence on a lot of things but we didn’t so far have statistical data on the correlation between jellyfish and the moon.”The research was conducted by the Israel Electric Corporation in conjunction with the University of Haifa in northern Israel. The jellyfish are a threat to Israel’s power supply as they get sucked into the country’s main power station, which uses sea water for cooling. The researchers looked at when the power station was most badly affected by the jellyfish and correlated it with the moon and water temperatures. In total, 94 percent of jellyfish swarms arrived after the middle of the year when the seas are warmer and during the second and third weeks of the lunar month. The ideal water temperature for the jellyfish is between 28.2 and 30 degrees, the research found.Algazi stressed the research so far only applied to local conditions but said he hoped “the results could be checked in other parts of the world.”

UN wants Israel to free staffer accused of aiding Hamas-Jerusalem declines request to grant diplomatic immunity to Development Program engineer suspected of helping Gaza-based terror group-By Judah Ari Gross August 25, 2016, 9:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The United Nation’s legal department “demanded” Israel release an employee of the international organization on Thursday, who has been accused of aiding the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip, according to Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.Waheed Abd Allah Bossh, 38, an engineer in the UN’s Development Program, was arrested by the Shin Bet security service in July. He is suspected of funneling resources to the terrorist group.According to the international organization, all UN employees are entitled to diplomatic immunity. The group’s legal department also demanded that UN officials have access to Bossh while he is being held in a Beersheba jail. The letter, which referred to Beersheba by its Arabic name Bi’ir as-Sab, was sent to the Israeli UN delegation this week.Danon refused the UN’s request. “We do not grant immunity to terrorists trying to harm our citizens,” he said, according to a statement released Thursday by his office.Through his work as an engineer, Bossh allegedly directed the UNDP to work on projects that would benefit Hamas, including a naval base for the terrorist group’s military wing.“In 2015, he helped build a marina for the use of the military arm of Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, using UNDP resources,” the Shin Bet said. The UN, however, claimed that the marina project had been directed by the Palestinian Authority, and not Hamas.Bossh’s case came on the heels of another high-profile arrest of an international aid worker, Muhammad Halabi, head of operations for the World Vision charity.According to the Shin Bet, Halabi helped funnel millions of dollars to Hamas over the years, as well as providing the group with resources and building material. In light of the allegations against the humanitarian aid groups, Danon called for the United Nations and other organizations to bring in additional oversight for the funding that reaches the Gaza Strip to ensure that it reaches the residents who need it — and not terrorist groups.“The UN and other organizations must implement a comprehensive reform of the humanitarian aid mechanism in Gaza,” Danon said in his statement Thursday.“Any dollar spent, and any local hire by an international organization, must be monitored ensure they fulfill the purpose of aiding the residents of Gaza and not fund terror activities.”

In Israel’s ultra-Orthodox press, Hillary Clinton is invisible-Democrat’s potential ascension to presidency is renewing debate in some Haredi circles over acceptability of women’s photos-By Daniella Cheslow August 25, 2016, 6:17 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

AP — Hillary Clinton may become the president of Israel’s most important ally, but her image is banished from a significant swath of the country’s media: the ultra-Orthodox press whose deeply conservative readership chafes at images of women.Clinton’s nomination as Democratic candidate for the US presidency is casting light on a longstanding policy that has already applied to other female figures from Germany’s Angela Merkel to Israel’s own prime minister Golda Meir. But whereas the election is causing some discussion among US ultra-Orthodox media, their Israeli equivalents are digging in their heels.“For us there is no question. We will not publish pictures of women, period,” said Meni Shwartz, editor of the ultra-Orthodox news site Behadrei Haredim.About 11 percent of Israel’s 8.5 million citizens are Haredi, or ultra-Orthodox. Recognizable by their black hats and long black clothes, they often lead insular lives, separated from the more secular Jewish majority and closely adhering to Jewish laws. Ultra-Orthodox women traditionally dress in long skirts and long-sleeved shirts, covering their hair if they are married. Men and women sit separately at synagogues and weddings and unrelated women and men refrain from physical contact.Ultra-Orthodox media, which include four daily newspapers, two main weeklies and two main web sites, cater to conservative ideals that include preserving women’s modesty and skipping topics involving drugs, murder and sex. Many consider showing pictures of women a violation of those values, however newsworthy the figure. So Haredi media use pictures of the White House, Democratic running mate Tim Kaine or even Bill Clinton instead of showing Hillary’s face. The issue sparked discussion in Israel this year when Yated Ne’eman, the largest ultra-Orthodox daily, published a story about Clinton’s choice of Kaine as her running mate, accompanied by a photograph of Clinton’s husband.“Hey Yated Ne’eman, what will happen if Hillary really wins? Four years of photos of Bill?” tweeted journalist Yair Ettinger, who covers religion for the secular daily Haaretz.Beni Rabinovich, a journalist with Yated Ne’eman, tweeted back that the Haredi press has “a clear and rigid line on this issue. Without Bill or with Bill, we’ll manage.”Yaakov Lustigman, foreign affairs reporter for the popular Haredi newspaper Hamevaser, said his readers are fascinated by the US elections and “we have no problem with there being a female president” — but they don’t want to see Clinton’s picture or even read her first name.Hamevaser achieved notoriety when it edited German Chancellor Angela Merkel out of a picture of world leaders marching through Paris after extremists attacked the offices of the satirical Charlie Hebdo magazine in 2015.Hamodia, a veteran ultra-Orthodox paper, is the only current Haredi daily that existed during the administration of Meir, Israel’s only female prime minister. A reporter there said that at the time, in the early 1970s, the newspaper did not publish her picture.News site Kikar Hashabbat publishes demure photographs of Clinton and other female leaders, according to foreign affairs reporter Israel Cohen.“Hillary Clinton is in her 60s. She’s solid, she dresses modestly and she’s likely to be the next president,” Cohen said. “You cannot ignore it.”But it is the lone exception, and journalists at rival publications said they don’t consider the site to be truly Haredi because of its policy.Rivka Neria-Ben Shahar, an expert on Haredi media at Sapir College in Sderot, said ultra-Orthodox newspapers have become more conservative in the past decades — but her studies show Haredi women today overwhelmingly support the policy.Ultra-Orthodox rabbis, some with tens of thousands of followers, set the guidelines for what is acceptable in their communities. Several ultra-Orthodox papers have rabbinical committees overseeing their content, and journalists say the issue of whether to publish Hillary Clinton’s picture hasn’t been discussed.Behadrei Haredim, headquartered in the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Bnei Brak near Tel Aviv, walks a tight line between conservative ideals and the modern essence of being online.Shwartz, the editor, said he gets about 1 million unique visits to the site a month, with users coming from Israel and around the world. The only photographs of women are in a section called “women’s lobby,” which focuses on cooking, motherhood and lifestyle. Users entering this area are warned that only women should proceed.Atara Sternbuch, an observant woman who runs the site’s English section, said the lack of women’s pictures on the main site is “just not an issue.” She said people who want to see pictures of Hillary Clinton can search elsewhere. “We want to make it comfortable to our readers who don’t want to be exposed to that,” she said.American ultra-Orthodox media have traditionally shied away from publishing women’s pictures as well. But the prospect of a Clinton presidency is stirring some debate. One newspaper recently broke a taboo by publishing a picture of Hillary Clinton’s hand.Rabbi Yitzchok Frankfurter, editor of the weekly Ami Magazine in New York, said he would consider printing Clinton’s photograph if rabbinical authorities allow it.“We don’t want to isolate the executive branch of the US government,” Frankfurter said. “It’s too important for us as Jews who are citizens of the US and as Jews who are friends of Israel.”Sheldon Schorer, former chairman of Democrats Abroad Israel, derided the policy of excluding women’s pictures and said it put Clinton at a disadvantage.“I don’t think the Jewish religion really requires that.”
