Confidential MH370 probe document suggests tragedy could have been a premeditated act-Home-built flight simulator used by pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah apparently showed him practise a suicide route to the Indian Ocean.By Ananya Roy-July 23, 2016 08:23 BST

The pilot of the doomed Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 may have practised a route similar to the one presumably taken on the fateful day on 8 March, 2014 that led to its disappearance. A confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the issue suggests that the incident could have been a premeditated act planned by the plane's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah. The document reportedly obtained by New York magazine stated that forensic analysis of the five hard disk drives seized from Shah's home-built flight simulator showed that he had practised the suicide route leading to a remote area in the southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the actual disappearance of the flight. However, this information was reportedly withheld by Malaysia from the investigation report — titled Factual Information — they released on the first anniversary of the disappearance of the flight. The document contained details of the findings of the investigation conducted by the Malaysian police surrounding the plane's captain. The document reportedly stated that the FBI was able to recover six deleted data points that had been stored by the Microsoft Flight Simulator X program in the weeks before the plane went missing. The data points record the simulated airplane's altitude, speed, direction of flight and other key parameters at a given point in time. These deleted data points show a flight departed Kuala Lumpur and then headed northwest over the Malacca Strait, then turned left and headed south over the Indian Ocean continuing on the same stretch over the sea until fuel exhaustion.Officials searching for the doomed MH370 believe that the actual flight also followed a similar route. Their assumption is based on signals transmitted by the Boeing 777 to a satellite after ceasing communications and steering off course. However, the presumed flight path and the simulated path vary at their endpoints, which are some 900 miles apart on the southern Indian Ocean.Shah has reportedly been a primary suspect in this case, but there were no evidence to implicate him. The "Factual Information" report even stated that the "Captain's ability to handle stress at work and home was good. There was no known history of apathy, anxiety, or irritability. There were no significant changes in his life style, interpersonal conflict or family stresses."The magazine reported that several previous media reports suggested that Australian and US officials involved in the MH370 probe have been more suspicious than their Malaysian counterparts of the role played by the pilot in the flight's disappearance.

MH370 pilot flew similar doomed route on home simulator: report-[AFP]-July 23, 2016-YAHOONEWS

New York (AFP) - The pilot who flew missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which is believed to have gone off route and crashed in the Indian Ocean, conducted a simulation of a similar path just weeks prior, New York magazine reported.Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the highly respected airman at the helm of the plane, used an elaborate home-built flight simulator to steer himself over the Strait of Malacca and into the remote southern Indian ocean, a course with striking resemblance to the route MH370 is believed to have taken. The finding, which casts a shadow of suspicion over the 53-year-old pilot, was published Friday by New York magazine, which obtained a confidential document from Malaysian police investigating the incident.According to the document, the FBI recovered deleted data points from the flight simulator on Zaharie's hard drive."We found a flight path, that lead to the Southern Indian Ocean, among the numerous other flight paths charted on the flight simulator, that could be of interest," the document said, according to New York magazine.Although the paths are similar, the simulated flight's endpoint is located some 900 miles (1,450 kilometers) from the area where the plane is believed to have gone down. The Boeing 777 vanished for unknown reasons on March 8, 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard, mostly Chinese nationals. It remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history. The Malaysian government continues to maintain that it does not know what caused the incident. At the time Zaharie, an opposition supporter, came under scrutiny amid unsubstantiated reports that he was upset over a jail sentence handed to Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim hours before the plane took off or was suicidal due to personal problems. But his family and friends strongly reject such claims as baseless.News of the simulated flight came the same day that Malaysia, Australia and China, the three nations leading the search, said that hope of finding the flight's final resting place is "fading" and that the massive hunt will be suspended if nothing turns up in the suspected crash zone.

Search for Flight 370 will be suspended, possibly forever-[The Canadian Press]-July 22, 2016-YAHOONEWS

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — The more than two-year-long hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will be suspended once the current search area in the Indian Ocean has been completely scoured, the three countries conducting the operation announced Friday, possibly ending all hopes of solving aviation's greatest mystery. Some families of the lost plane's 239 passengers and crew were angry over the decision to stop what is already the most expensive search in aviation history, having cost 180 million Australian dollars ($135 million). Others continued to hold out hope."In the absence of new evidence, Malaysia, Australia and China have collectively decided to suspend the search upon completion of the 120, 000-square-kilometre (46,300-square-mile) search area," Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said after a meeting with his Australian and Chinese counterparts. There are fewer than 10,000 square kilometres (3,900 square miles) left to be searched. In a statement read by Liow, the ministers acknowledged that "the likelihood of finding the aircraft is fading."The ministers said the search could be revived, but only if new evidence emerges."Should credible new information emerge which can be used to identify the specific location of the aircraft, consideration will be given in determining next steps," their joint statement said.As Liow and the other two ministers were addressing the news conference, representatives of the passengers' families stood outside the building holding placards calling on authorities to keep trying. "Find the plane, ease our pain," read one."We don't want the suspension to be just a way to let everyone calm down and slowly forget about it," said Grace Subathirai Nathan, a Malaysian whose mother, Anne Daisy, was on the flight. "We want them to be doing something in the interim to look for new information."Australian Transport Minister Darren Chester said experts will continue to analyze data and inspect debris but added, "Future searches must have a high level of success to justify raising hopes of loved ones."The Boeing 777 vanished on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. It is believed to have turned back west and then south before dropping into the Indian Ocean west of Australia, where the search has been concentrated. Much of what happened to the plane remains a mystery, though the Malaysian government has concluded that it was deliberately steered off course.Liow said the search, hampered by bad weather and damaged equipment, will end by December.Although the ministers were at pains to say they were not permanently ending the search, it is evident that it is highly unlikely to continue after that, given how few clues have emerged since the disappearance of the plane. Confirmed and possible debris has been found off East Africa thousands of kilometres (miles) away, but authorities have said the wreckage has provided no information that might help locate the bulk of the aircraft. Some relatives remained hopeful that the search will resume one day."I feel encouraged. Fearing the worst, we now have something to hang on to," said K.S. Narenderan, who lost his wife, Chandrika Sharma, on the flight. "I read into it a commitment to stay engaged in the search and to hold themselves accountable to pursue the truth.""You can suspend, but don't stop there," said Jacquita Gonzales, whose husband Patrick Gomes was a crew member on Flight 370. "Suspension can be five years, 15 years, 20 years. ... It's a long wait, so go back to the drawing board."Representatives from Voice 370, a group representing family members of the plane's passengers and crew, met with Australian officials in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday and urged the governments to suspend the search until new funds can be raised. They also called for a wider base of funding, including from Boeing and other plane and component manufacturers. The three governments are involved because the airline was Malaysian, most of the passengers were Chinese, and the suspected crash site is off southwestern Australia.Several relatives of Chinese victims said they felt betrayed by the decision."I will never agree with the decision to suspend the search," said Zhang Qian, whose wife, Wang Houbin, had been on board MH 370. "We will definitely gather to protest it and I have lost confidence to the Malaysian government."But Jeanette Maguire, whose sister and brother-in-law Cathy and Bob Lawton, from Brisbane, Australia, were aboard Flight 370, said that while the decision is "very difficult to accept," she understood searchers needed more information to continue, "because it's costing an absolute fortune."There have been several theories surrounding the disappearance and the final hours of the flight, including that the plane glided into the water and didn't dive in, indicating a controlled ditching."We do not have any evidence to confirm that it was controlled ditching," Liow said.He said the plane debris found so far "did not identify the exact location of the aircraft" but the location of the debris is consistent with the drift modeling pattern done by Australia, which indicated a general search area.Western Australia University oceanographer Charitha Pattiaratchi, who has done extensive drift modeling, has said the plane could have crashed slightly north of the current search area.Pattiaratchi's modeling was based on how long the first piece of confirmed Flight 370 wreckage took to reach La Reunion off the African coast , an island where confirmed plane debris was found, and his team's calculations of the effects of currents, wind and waves on drifting debris.Drift modeling was not used to define the search area because no parts of Flight 370 had been found before a wing flap washed up on La Reunion island a year ago. The search area was determined by analysis of satellite signals that the plane emitted in its final hours. But the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has previously said wreckage found on the southwestern shores of the Indian Ocean was consistent with the plane crashing in the expansive search area.___AP writer Rod McGuirk in Canberra, Australia, and researcher Yu Bing in Beijing contributed to this report.Eileen Ng, The Associated Press

9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Earth on track for hottest year ever as warming speeds up-[Reuters]-By Stephanie Nebehay-July 21, 2016-YAHOONEWS

GENEVA (Reuters) - The earth is on track for its hottest year on record and warming at a faster rate than expected, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Thursday.Temperatures recorded mainly in the northern hemisphere in the first six months of the year, coupled with an early and fast Arctic sea ice melt and "new highs" in heat-trapping carbon dioxide levels, point to quickening climate change, it said.June marked the 14th straight month of record heat, the United Nations agency said. It called for speedy implementation of a global pact reached in Paris last December to limit climate change by shifting from fossil fuels to green energy by 2100."What we’ve seen so far for the first six months of 2016 is really quite alarming," David Carlson, director of the WMO’s Climate Research Program, told a news briefing."This year suggests that the planet can warm up faster than we expected in a much shorter time... We don’t have as much time as we thought."The average temperature in the first six months of 2016 was 1.3° Celsius (2.4° Fahrenheit) warmer than the pre-industrial era of the late 19th Century, according to space agency NASA.Under the Paris Agreement, nearly 200 governments agreed to limit global warming to well below 2°C (3.6°F) above pre-industrial levels, while "pursuing efforts" for a ceiling of 1.5°C - a lower limit already close to being reached. The last month with global temperatures below the 20th century average was December 1984, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).-"EXTRAORDINARY YEAR"-"There's almost no plausible scenario at this point that is going to get us anything other than an extraordinary year in terms of ice (melt), CO2, temperature - all the things that we track," Carlson said."If we got this much surprise this year, how many more surprises are ahead of us?"A strong El Nino weather event from 2015/2016 in the Pacific Ocean, a phenomenon associated with extreme droughts, storms and floods, contributed to the record temperatures in the first half of 2016 before disappearing in May, WMO said."Climate change, caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases, will not (disappear). This means we face more heatwaves, more extreme rainfall and potential for higher impact tropical cyclones," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.Repeated extremes, such as heatwaves, downpours or droughts, could encourage more action to limit greenhouse gas emissions."Research shows that for the general public extremes make climate change more tangible, more understandable," said Joeri Rogelj, a climate expert at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna."It could help to motivate people to engage in climate action, and do something."(Reporting and writing by Stephanie Nebehay; additional reporting by Alister Doyle in Oslo; editing by Raissa Kasolowsky and John Stonestreet)

Floods kill at least 112 across China, leave scores missing-[Associated Press]-July 23, 2016-YAHOONEWS

BEIJING (AP) — Torrential rains that swept through China this week have left at least 112 people dead and 91 others missing, various provincial governments reported on Saturday. The rains, which began on Monday, have flooded streams, triggered landslides and destroyed homes across China. The northern province of Hebei has been hit the hardest, with authorities there saying 72 people were killed and 78 missing.Nearly 300,000 people were evacuated in Hebei, and the province made another round of appropriations of tents, blankets, rain boots and generators, the provincial department of civil affairs said.In the Hebei city of Xingtai alone, 25 people were killed and another 13 were missing. The town also drew national attention after emotional protests erupted in one village on Friday. The village of Daxian in Xingtai was nearly wiped out when it was swamped by a flash flood early Wednesday as villagers were asleep. Photos circulating online showed disturbing images of drowned children lying in mud.Angry villagers in Daxian questioned whether authorities had failed to notify them in time for evacuation when an upstream reservoir discharged floodwaters. Authorities blamed a failure of a river levee near the village for the sudden water surge.Qiu Wenshuang, a vice mayor of Xingtai, said Saturday that the village was already flooded when officials entered the village to evacuate residents on Wednesday morning, according to state media reports.

Hawaii issues emergency proclamation ahead of Tropical Storm Darby-[Reuters]-July 23, 2016-YAHOONEWS

(Reuters) - Hawaii Governor David Ige on Friday issued an emergency proclamation ahead of the arrival of Tropical Storm Darby, a storm that could reach land over the next day bringing with it heavy rains and strong wind.Forecasters expect Darby to reach the Hawaii's Big Island on Saturday when winds could near 60 mph (95 km/h) and as much as 15 inches (40 cm) of rain could fall, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in an advisory."I urge residents and businesses to follow emergency instructions, prepare for the storm and take steps to protect your families, employees and property," Ige said in a statement. In issuing tropical storm warnings and watches for the state of Hawaii, NOAA said the storm could cause life-threatening flash floods as well as landslides.NOAA also said surf swells generated by Darby are expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands over the next couple of days.(Reporting by Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee)

Egypt's Sisi wants to 'break deadlock' in peace process-[AFP]-July 21, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Cairo (AFP) - Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Thursday his country is serious about pushing forward peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians."Egypt's recent serious effort aims to break the deadlock that has hung over peace efforts," he said in a speech broadcast live on state TV."It is a sincere effort to make everyone face their responsibilities and warn of the consequences of delays in achieving peace," he said. His remarks followed a trip by Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to Israel earlier this month, the first such visit in nine years.Sisi said in May that Egypt was willing to take part in peace talks, saying there was a "real opportunity" for an Israeli-Palestinian deal that could lead to warmer ties between his country and Israel.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who met Shoukry during his visit, welcomed Sisi's offer.Shoukry also met Palestinian leaders in the West Bank city of Ramallah. The last round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed in April 2014.In 1979, Egypt was the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel after years of conflict. It remains an influential player in the region. However, ties between the countries have been cold over Israel's policies toward the Palestinians.Netanyahu has called on Palestinians to engage in direct negotiations with Israel, but Palestinian leaders say years of talks have not ended Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has instead tried to put pressure on Israel through diplomacy at the UN.In June, representatives from 28 Arab and Western countries, the Arab League, European Union and the United Nations met in Paris to discuss ways push peace efforts forward.Neither Israeli nor Palestinian representatives were invited to attend the meeting, which aimed to prepare for a peace conference by the end of the year. The Palestinians have welcomed the French bid but Israel strongly opposes the initiative.
