Israel ‘concerned’ over EU revision to UNESCO Jerusalem proposal-Foreign Ministry slams new draft, says it still challenges historical Jewish ties to Old City, Temple Mount-By Raoul Wootliff July 14, 2016, 9:21 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A European Union revision to a controversial resolution by the UN’s cultural body on the Old City of Jerusalem had Israel “concerned” on Thursday, with the Foreign Ministry saying the new text still downplays Jewish historical ties to its holiest site.A statement from the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem expressed “concern’ over the EU revision to the UNESCO resolution, which it said “nullifies the bond and relationship of the Jewish people to the Temple Mount.”“The EU proposal still denies the connection of the Jewish people to the Temple Mount,” the Foreign Ministry statement said. The text of the proposal has not yet been released by the EU.In its statement, the Foreign Ministry singled out EU member France, which expressed remorse over its “yes” vote on an April UNESCO resolution that ignored Jewish ties to Jerusalem. It also emphasized Jerusalem was still applying diplomatic pressure to quash the current version.“Nothing is finished yet,” the ministry added. The move came days after a joint Palestinian-Jordanian resolution on Jerusalem was shelved after failing to garner enough support. That proposal urged a return of the Temple Mount and the Al-Aqsa Mosque to what it called “the historic status quo” following the 1967 Six Day War, under which the Jordanian Waqf religious authority had the right to administer all aspects of the sites “including maintenance, restoration, and regulating access.”Israel has put pressure on UN members to reject that vote, including in a letter Monday by Foreign Ministry chief Dore Gold, and vocal complaints from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after a previous UNESCO vote on Jerusalem in April. The complex, which was the site of the two biblical temples, is Judaism’s holiest site. Muslims regard the compound — which houses the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock shrine — as the third-holiest site in Islam. While Jews are allowed to enter the site, they are banned from worship under arrangements instituted by Israel when it captured the area from Jordan in 1967.The site has been a focal point of violence wracking Israel and the West Bank over the past 10 months, amid claims by Palestinian leaders — vehemently denied by Israel — that the Israeli government plans to change the status quo on the Temple Mount. Some 40 victims have been killed in Palestinian stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks in the wave of violence since October.A resolution adopted by UNESCO’s executive board in April enraged Israel for ignoring the Jewish connection to Jerusalem. The April resolution criticized Israel for “excavations and works” in East Jerusalem, and urged it to stop “aggressions and illegal measures against the freedom of worship and Muslims’ access” to their holy site. The resolution also accused Israel of “planting fake Jewish graves in Muslim cemeteries” and of “the continued conversion of many Islamic and Byzantine remains into the so-called Jewish ritual baths or into Jewish prayer places.”The April resolution was approved by 33 states of the 58-member body, including Russia, Spain, Sweden, France and Brazil.Like France, Brazil said its vote a mistake.Seventeen countries abstained while six voted against — the United States, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Ivanka Trump’s rabbi among Republican convention speakers-Pastor who told Sanders to ’embrace Jesus’ tops list; many Republicans, including former president, to snub convention-By Ron Kampeas July 14, 2016, 8:35 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Speakers at the Republican National Convention are scheduled to include the rabbi who converted Donald Trump’s daughter to Judaism and the pastor who said Bernie Sanders needed to embrace Jesus. On Thursday, the Republican National Convention released a list of speakers as notable for who is absent as it is for the inclusion of a number of speakers close to the Jewish community.Topping the list, presumably because he will lead the convocation at the launch of the convention, is Pastor Mark Burns, a televangelist who has become an important surrogate for Trump among evangelicals, who initially were wary of Trump because of the secular values he seemed to embrace as a reality TV star.Christian conservatives have warmed to Trump over the campaign, in part because of the intercession of Burns and others in the evangelical community. At a March rally for Trump in North Carolina, Burns spoke of Sanders — the first Jewish candidate to win major nominating contests — while warming up the crowd waiting for the candidate.“Bernie Sanders, who doesn’t believe in God, how in the world are we gonna let Bernie … really?” Burns said. “He gotta meet Jesus, he gotta have a coming to Jesus meeting.”Sanders, who this week formally ended his campaign to win the Democratic nomination and endorsed Hillary Clinton, has said he believes in God. Burns later told The Associated Press that he did not intend to insult Jews and the comment had “nothing to do” with Sanders’ Judaism. Also listed among the speakers is the modern Orthodox Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, who converted Ivanka Trump before her marriage to Jared Kushner. Lookstein is among the most prominent rabbis now involved in a political struggle with the Israeli rabbinate over its refusal to consider the conversions of a large number of American Orthodox rabbis.Other speakers of note to the Jewish community are Michael Mukasey, the Jewish attorney general under President George W. Bush who has said most of the world’s Muslims are interested in imposing religious law on the world — a message that jibes with Trump’s broadsides against Islam.Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who has long been a favorite of Republican Jews for his moderation on social issues coupled with a tough national security posture, will speak, as will Tom Cotton, the Arkansas senator and Iraq War veteran who has become a favorite of the pro-Israel right in recent years. Also, Newt Gingrich, the former U.S. House of Representatives speaker who is very close to Sheldon Adelson, the pro-Israel casino magnate who has pledged tens of millions of dollars to Trump’s campaign. Gingrich will be one of several vice presidential contenders at the convention; Trump is set to announce his running mate on Friday.Absent from the speakers’ list are an array of Republican luminaries who are wary of associating with Trump because of his broadsides against minorities and women, as well as his departures from the party’s Orthodoxy, particularly his favoring a drawdown of U.S. influence overseas.Among those close to the Jewish community who will not be attending or speaking are former President George W. Bush, and the 2008 and 2012 nominees, respectively Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Trump to tap Indiana governor as running mate — reports-Mike Pence seen as a strong supporter of Israel; final announcement on VP candidate to be made Friday-By Times of Israel staff and Agencies July 14, 2016, 8:42 pm

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump will reportedly pick Indiana Governor Mike Pence to be his running mate.Trump is expected to make an official announcement on his vice president candidate Friday, but the Roll Call website, citing an anonymous source, reported that Trump has already chosen Pence. Other US media outlets, citing sources in the Trump campaign, have also reported that Pence is Trump’s choice for his vice president. Also on Trump’s shortlist are New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, according to people familiar with the candidate’s thinking.Pence quickly exited a speaking event in Indianapolis Thursday morning without taking questions from reporters. His staff had not released details of any other planned appearances Thursday.Pence is running for re-election, but Indiana law prevents him from seeking two offices at once. He faces a Friday deadline to withdraw from the governor’s race.A Republican familiar with Pence’s thinking said the paperwork has been drawn up for him to take that step. However, the documents have not been filed, according to the Republican, who insisted on anonymity because that person was not authorized to publicly discuss Pence’s plans.According to Roll Call, the two men have been spending time together with Pence visiting the Trump golf course in New Jersey. The Indiana governor has also hosted the presumptive Republican presidential nominee at his home.House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday said Pence would be a good pick for Trump’s vice president. The Wisconsin Republican said he doesn’t know what Trump will do, and added, “I hope he makes a good pick and clearly that would be a good one.”Ryan said it’s no secret he’s a big fan of Pence’s and holds him in very high regard.Trump’s vice presidential announcement is expected soon with the Republican National Convention getting under way in Cleveland next week.Jason Miller, Trump’s senior communication adviser tweeted that a decision will be made Friday morning, echoing Trump who said earlier this week that he will make his announcement Friday.2/2 …and will be announcing his Vice Presidential pick tomorrow at 11am as planned.— Jason Miller (@JasonMillerinDC) July 14, 2016-Pence is broadly seen as a strong supporter of Israel, which he visited in 2014, meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.“The strong and broad bipartisan support for the state of Israel I know will be reflected in decisions that our Congress makes in the months ahead to preserve the support the United States provides to Israel, to ensure that Israel is able to enter into negotiations to achieve defensible borders and secure its own peace and security in the years ahead,” he said while in Jerusalem in December 2014.The trip was seen at the time as a bid for him to burnish his foreign policy bona fides ahead of a possible 2016 presidential run.Earlier this year, Pence signed into law a bill that banned Indiana from dealing with companies that boycott Israel.Trump was making his final decision from California, where he is scheduled to attend a series of fundraisers at a distance from many of his closest advisers. His campaign chair, Paul Manafort, is currently in Cleveland, and none of his children are in the state with him.All three of the finalists have had extensive conversations with Trump and his family in recent days.Gingrich told The Associated Press he was expecting to hear from Trump one way or the other sometime after 1 p.m. The former Georgia congressman praised Trump for running a “very fair, open process” and said he looked forward to learning the businessman’s decision.Gingrich later posted on Facebook that he would hold a live chat at 2 p.m. about the “vice presidential picks and the VP selection process.”

In first, oldest Egyptian writing on papyrus displayed-Text from Great Pyramid of Giza sheds light on daily lives of port workers during reign of King Khufu in 26th century BCE-By AFP July 14, 2016, 8:48 pm-the times of israel

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is showcasing for the first time the earliest writing from ancient Egypt found on papyrus, detailing work on the Great Pyramid of Giza, antiquities officials said Thursday. The papyri were discovered near Wadi el-Jarf port, 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the Gulf of Suez town of Zafarana, the antiquities ministry said. The find by a French-Egyptian team unearths papers telling of the daily lives of port workers who transported huge limestone blocks to Cairo in the 26th century BCE during King Khufu’s rule to build the Great Pyramid, intended to be his burial structure. One document was a “diary by government official Merer (the beloved) with statistics and administrative details” of his work, said Sayed Mahfouz, who co-led the 2013 discovery.Merer led a team of around 40, according to the ministry. The documents also list revenues transferred from various Egyptian provinces to feed pyramid builders and pay their wages, Mahfouz said.Revenue was written in red, while what was paid to workers would be written in black, said Mahfouz.“It gives for every day an account of the work of this crew transporting limestone blocks from the quarries of Turah on the east bank of the Nile to the Pyramid of Khufu at Giza plateau through the Nile and its canals,” the ministry said.It said the papyri “indicate the highly efficient administrative system during Khufu’s reign.”
