16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Egypt ready to pressure Palestinians on peace process, envoy says-In first public remarks, Ambassador Hazem Khairat also warns ‘continuation of occupation’ causes terror; calls for closing Israel’s nuclear facilities-By Raphael Ahren June 16, 2016, 2:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Cairo is willing to help create an “appropriate Palestinian environment” to facilitate an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, Egypt’s envoy to Israel said Thursday, appearing to answer the Israeli demand for Arab states to exert more pressure on Ramallah. But in his first public appearance since becoming ambassador in February, Hazem Khairat also appeared to blame Israel for the stalemate in the peace process and reiterated Cairo’s desire to rid Israel of its reported nuclear arsenal.“As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is facing a dangerous deadlock, Egypt still believes that reaching a peace agreement is achievable,” Khairat said during a speech at the Herzliya Conference.“For a just peace that brings security back to the region, Egypt will continue to work with all parties, including preparing an appropriate Palestinian environment and activating the Arab Peace Initiative. But only Israelis and Palestinians can make a courageous choice to achieve it.”In recent weeks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued repeatedly that an Israeli detente with the Arab world should take place before an agreement with the Palestinian can be signed, and expressed the hope that Arab leaders could exert pressure on Ramallah to make the concessions necessary for a peace deal. But despite Khairat’s remarkable comment, he made plain that he does not believe Jerusalem can wait indefinitely while leaving the Palestinian issue untouched.“Ignoring the facts is not changing the facts. Rather, it can actually lead to the very explosion it attempts to avoid, as the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian violence would show,” he said.He then went on list a “a sample of tragic developments” that took place: “the tension in Jerusalem, the deteriorating situation in the West Bank, including the settlements that are expanding in Area C [the West Bank area under Israeli administrative and military control], eroding the land of the future State of Palestine, as well as the incursions in Areas A and B.” These issues, he postulated, “undermine hope for the future.”There is not much time left for the implementation of a two-state solution, the ambassador said, adding that the absence of peace benefits extremist organizations.“While there is no justification for terrorism, its cure should deal with the causes, and not only with the symptoms,” he said. This includes tackling all causes of violent extremism, “whether those causes are political or economic or social, or the continuation of occupation and other unresolved chronic political problems.”Khairat referenced Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi’s recent speech in support of Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation, but also hailed the current French peace initiative “as contributing to the framework of international action to this end.” A ministerial meeting in Paris earlier this month, he said, “has certainly made a new step toward peace.”Israel dismissed the Paris summit as a “missed opportunity” that distanced the prospects of peace. The Egyptian envoy devoted a significant portion of his address to nuclear nonproliferation, taking pride in Cairo’s attempts to create a Middle East devoid of atomic weapons. He decried “the lack of political will of some few, not all” that resulted in the failure of these efforts. Most recently, in September 2015, Cairo unsuccessfully spearheaded a campaign to pass a resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency that would have called for international monitoring of Israel’s nuclear facilities.“Egypt has made a great effort and is determined to continue working in coordination with partners to establish a zone free of all kinds of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East,” he said. “We hope that all states in the region will respond to this call for peace and security for all.”-‘What could Israel ask for more than this?’Also speaking at the Herzliya Conference, Jordanian Ambassador to Israel Walid Obeidat reiterated his Egyptian colleague’s call for a quick resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, similarly endorsing the French initiative but highlighting the Arab Peace Initiative.“In Jordan’s opinion, in the Arab states’ opinion, the Arab Peace Initiative stands a master of all initiatives when we talk about regional approaches,” he said. The initiative, which promises Israel full normalization with the Arab world after a peace accord with the Palestinians is reached, is not only endorsed by the Arab League but also by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Obeidat said.“We’re talking in total about 58 countries. What could Israel ask for more than this?”The Jordanian diplomat noted Netanyahu’s May 30 partial embrace of the Arab initiative but indicated that Israel needs to do more than merely pay lip service to the idea. “We are aware of recent indications, recent interaction, with the Arab Peace Initiative,” he said in concluding his remarks. “We view them as very positive, but we still have to see action in this regard.”

Energy minister predicts vast new offshore gas reserves-Steinitz says foreign estimates suggest 2,200 billion cubic meters of natural gas under Israeli territorial waters-By Tamar Pileggi June 16, 2016, 6:34 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz on Thursday said that vast quantities of undiscovered natural gas likely exist under Israeli territorial waters in the Mediterranean Sea.Citing Israeli, American and European assessments, Steinitz said there was a “50 percent likelihood” that 2,200 billion cubic meters of natural gas would be confirmed in untapped offshore reserves, four times the amount in Leviathan, the largest known Israeli offshore field.Speaking at the annual Herzliya Conference, the energy minister said that if the assessments were correct, Israel would begin ocean exploration in the coming months, and was mulling selling the gas to Turkey.“Another find will turn Israel into a gas exporter, and we’re examining the feasibility of installing a gas pipeline from Israel to Turkey at a reasonable cost,” he said. “If the predictions are correct, and other reservoirs are discovered, Israel will become a major gas exporter to Western Europe.”In recent years, the Mediterranean Sea has become a new frontier of energy exploration with foreign investment lured in to prospect via deep-water drilling. The discovery of Israel’s Leviathan reservoir by the American Noble Energy and the locally based Delek Group, an offshore reserve estimated to contain some 17 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, was one of the world’s largest offshore discoveries in a decade.Noble-Delek’s proposed deal to develop Leviathan and number of other natural gas reserves discovered offshore Israel in recent years has faced persistent opposition from critics who say the partnership would create a monopoly in the gas market and lead to higher prices for Israeli consumers.Over the last year, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has performed political cartwheels to override Knesset and public opposition to the consortium’s proposal before finally pushing an amended deal through the cabinet in May.The amended agreement, which contains the so-called “stability clause,” allows future governments to alter the gas deal where necessary, a stipulation whose omission in a previous agreement text led to the High Court blocking its progress.Netanyahu has touted the gas deal as having the potential to bring would bring energy self-sufficiency and billions of dollars in tax revenues and transform Israel into a regional energy powerhouse.Israel is reportedly in gas exportation talks with Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, the Palestinians and the European Union.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Intelligence minister warns ‘megalomanic’ Hezbollah chief-Yisrael Katz cautions that an attack on Israel’s home front would spell ‘ruin for Lebanon’-By Stuart Winer June 16, 2016, 4:46 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz launched a scathing attack on the Hezbollah terror group’s leader, calling Hassan Nasrallah a “megalomaniac” with no concept of reality and warning that Lebanon would be “ruined” in a future conflict between the IDF and Hezbollah.“Hezbollah continues to be the primary non-state threat, not only to Israel but also to Lebanon,” he told the Herzliya Conference, an annual seminar reviewing Israel’s security. He added that a conflict with the Lebanon-based Shiite group could be triggered by a minor incident due to “the megalomaniac character of the organization’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, a fanatical personality who lacks any conception of reality except, perhaps, anything to do with protecting his personal security.”His words came a day after IDF Military Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevy, speaking at the same conference, put particular emphasis on the threat from Hezbollah in Lebanon, as Israel prepares to mark 10 years since the Second Lebanon War next month.Hezbollah is believed to have an arsenal of more than 100,000 missiles and rockets, along with weapons systems “that they never had before,” Halevy said. But Katz said that it is Israel’s northern neighbor and the Hezbollah leader who had the most to lose in a conflict with Israel.“A war in Lebanon and an attack on the Israeli home front will bring about the ousting of Nasrallah and will bring ruin to Lebanon,” he predicted.Katz, who is also transportation minister, presented his vision for Israel to become a trade bridge between the Mediterranean Sea and countries to its east by revving up the historic Jezreel Valley Railway line, part of an train network in the region active during the first half of the twentieth century, under Ottoman and British rule. He revealed that Turkish trucks are already making use of Israel’s strategic position, which offers a detour around war-torn Syria.“Turkish trucks are already bringing goods to the east via Haifa port. They are using the Israeli route as an alternative to the Syrian route, which can’t be used due to the situation there,” he said.Katz also took the opportunity to raise the subject of creating an international island in the sea opposite the Gaza Strip to act as a port with a bridge to the land for the transfer of people and goods.“This plan could contribute much to easing the pressure on the residents of the Strip, while further advancing the separation from Israel,” he explained, and noted that Israel’s security leadership is very interested in the idea.“I hope that the highest political leadership will have the courage and determination to make a decision,” he said.In February the Hebrew-language Haaretz daily reported that senior IDF officials support the idea of easing the pressure on Hamas, the de facto ruler of Gaza, amid a worsening economic situation in Gaza that could lead to new conflict, by giving the territory access to a seaport. It said a range of possible port arrangements — including an artificial offshore island — are being discussed at senior military and political levels.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Ya’alon slams Netanyahu, says he’ll run for PM in next election-Ousted defense minister announces his bid for Israel’s leadership, refrains from saying with which party-By Judah Ari Gross June 16, 2016, 5:11 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon announced his intention to run for prime minister on Thursday, less than a month after resigning from the government amid a political upheaval. In his speech, Ya’alon accused the country’s leaders of “blinding” the country with imaginary existential threats in order to distract them from the serious issues facing Israel.“It is my intention to run for the leadership in the next elections,” Ya’alon said, prompting applause from the audience. The Likud party released a statement shortly after Ya’alon made his remarks, stopping just short of calling him a hypocrite for downplaying the threat of Iran, which he once warned against.“It’s amusing to watch how quickly Ya’alon changes his spots. Just a few months ago he said: ‘Iran is an existential concern for Israel,'” the party said in its statement. “Today at the Herzliya Conference, when he became a politician, he said there are no existential concerns for Israel.”In a dramatic turn of events, Ya’alon was ousted as defense minister last month, a position he had held since 2013. In the weeks since, commentators and analysts have rushed to determine how and with whom Ya’alon could make his political comeback. The former Likud member did not indicate with which party he would run. This was not Ya’alon’s first time indicating his intention to run for office, and indeed he made a similar announcement during his resignation speech in Tel Aviv last month. Many of the lines from his speech on Thursday were even picked directly from his speech nearly a month ago.“I have no intention of [permanently] leaving public life, and in the future I will return as a candidate for national leadership,” he said on May 20.At the 16th annual Herzliya Conference at the Interdisciplinary Center, Ya’alon reiterated that decision, but also came out harshly against the current government.“It is intolerable that Israel’s leadership in 2016 tries to incite Jews against Arabs, right against left, and between different tribes, all in order to survive in the government and to get another month or another year” in office, he said.Despite claims to the contrary by Israel’s current leaders, “at this time and for the foreseeable future, there is no existential threat facing Israel,” Ya’alon said, without naming any particular politicians or leaders who say the opposite.“Israel is the strongest country in the region,” Ya’alon said. “Therefore it’s reasonable that the leadership should cease terrifying its citizens and stop trying to give them a feeling that we are on the brink of a second Holocaust.”Ya’alon cited Israel’s economic and social woes, including racism and sexism, as issues he would seek to address in a leadership position.“Good people are deterred from entering politics. But we can’t throw up our hands and say someone else will take care of it,” he added, slamming the “violent” rhetoric of Israeli politicians.“I plan on offering an alternative to the current leadership, because we do not have another country,” he said, before leaving the stage and exiting the building.

Gaga for yoga-India brings sun salutations to Tel Aviv’s Tachana-After massive success of first effort, local embassy invites residents to stretch out for second International Yoga Day-By Jessica Steinberg June 16, 2016, 5:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israelis like their yoga. That’s a good thing for the Indian Embassy in Israel, which is hosting its second Tel Aviv celebration of International Yoga Day on Tuesday, June 21, at the Tachana, the city’s renovated train station complex. In fact, last year’s local celebration of International Yoga Day was so successful that they were encouraged to plan it on a much larger scale this year, said Dr. Anju Kumar, India’s deputy ambassador in Israel. The event, which begins in the late afternoon and runs into the evening, has several components, said Kumar, including several types of yoga classes, lectures and a yoga practice for kids. The first set of classes will be taught by local yoga teachers. At 6:30 p.m., yoga teacher Prasad Rangnekar, brought in from India for the event, will lead the common yoga protocol that will take place at the same time at other International Yoga Day events held worldwide. The evening events include dance and music performances, with stalls of Indian food and crafts set up around the Tachana.Given Israel’s size, the local celebration of International Yoga Day is considered quite large, said the deputy ambassador. There are other sizable events in places that have large Indian populations, such as the Gulf countries, she said.“We’re happy to see so many Israeli enthusiasts of yoga,” said Kumar. “We take inspiration from them. They’ve already given a lot of life to yoga.”The first International Yoga Day was held last year, following a United Nations resolution that was introduced by India’s prime minister and voted in by 177 countries.“It was almost a unanimous agreement,” said Kumar.Last year’s celebration of International Yoga Day brought about 2,000 people to the Tel Aviv Port, the biggest event that site had hosted until then, Kumar said. She said she wasn’t surprised that a yoga event was so popular.“It’s such a good message,” she said. “Yoga suits everyone. It’s an invaluable gift of an ancient tradition that embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action.”For more information and times, go to the International Yoga Day Facebook page.
