Israel said scrambling to counter new EU decision on settlements-Haaretz says move, set to be approved on Monday, could lead to new sanctions on Jews in West Bank and Golan Heights-By Times of Israel staff January 15, 2016, 8:50 pm

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has this weekend begun an emergency effort to halt plans by European Union member states to intensify their distinction between Israel and the territories it captured in the 1967 Six Day War, the Haaretz daily reported Friday. The paper quoted senior Israeli officials and European diplomats as saying that the decision could lead to new sanctions against the Jewish communities in the West Bank and the Golan Heights. The draft resolution is being promoted by Sweden and Ireland, as well as France in a more limited scope, Haaretz said. The paper quotes a senior official in Jerusalem as saying that said that Israeli diplomats across the EU and those attached to EU bodies in Brussels have been working in recent days to soften the language of the draft, with limited success. The decision on the proposal is scheduled to be announced on Monday, Haaretz reported, following a monthly meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council. According to the report, the statement had been expected to be “relatively moderate,” but in the wake of discussions on the issue at the EU headquarters in Brussels on Thursday, senior Israeli officials said there had been a significant intensification of the censure of Israel in the draft proposal.According to Haaretz, the draft stresses that the EU sees a clear distinction between Israel and the settlements. The draft reportedly says that, “The EU will continue to unequivocally and explicitly make the distinction between Israel and all territories occupied by Israel in 1967.” Furthermore, it states, agreements between Israel and the EU are applicable solely to Israel proper, and not its settlements. The draft also says the EU “will consider further action to protect the viability of the two-state solution, which is constantly eroded by new facts on the ground.”It further states that, “The EU and its member states are united in their commitment to ensure full implementation of existing EU legislation and agreements applicable to settlement products.”The recent decision to label settlement products, the draft also reportedly says, is not seen as a boycott of Israel, to which the EU is opposed. In November, the EU approved guidelines for its member states to label products made in West Bank settlements, drawing angry condemnation from Israel and accusations of anti-Semitism. The move, which also applies to the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem, underscores the EU’s unhappiness over Israel’s continued expansion of settlements on territory that Palestinians are seeking for a future state. According to the guidelines published, the labels will need to point out that the product is made in an Israeli settlement, and not just the geographical origin. The EU claimed the move, which has been in the works for over a year, was independent of any political considerations, and meant only to clarify misleading labels claiming that goods from the territories originated in Israel. However, Jerusalem said it saw the decision as akin to a boycott on the state. The Foreign Ministry warned the decision could affect ties and accused Brussels in a statement of applying a double standard to Israel “while ignoring 200 other territorial disputes around the world.”European Parliament President Martin Schulz said Thursday that he opposed the decision to label settlement products, arguing that it would have a detrimental effect on Palestinians employed at Israeli factories in these areas.Later Thursday, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu castigated aspects of the EU’s stance on Israel, and called for a “reset” in Israel-EU relations.

At least 20 dead as Al-Qaeda gunmen attack hotel in Burkina Faso-Armed men storm Ouagadougou hotel popular with Westerners; France calls incident a ‘terrorist attack’-By AP, AFP and Times of Israel staff January 16, 2016, 12:54 am

At least 20 people have been killed and another 15 wounded in an ongoing assault on a hotel in the capital of Burkina Faso on Friday night, a hospital chief told AFP.“For the dead, we do not have a precise figure, but there are at least 20 dead,” said Robert Sangare, the head of Yalgado Ouedraogo hospital.“We have had at least 15 wounded with bullet wounds and others who suffered injuries during the panic to escape.”An Al-Qaeda affiliate claimed responsibility for the attack on the four-star Splendid Hotel in Ouagadougou. The “mujahideen brothers” of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb “broke into a restaurant of one of the biggest hotels in the capital of Burkina Faso, and are now entrenched and the clashes are continuing with the enemies of the religion,” the SITE Intelligence Group quoted an Arabic-language AQIM message as saying. The French embassy called the assault a “terrorist attack” and the US Embassy in Ouagadougou tweeted: “We are closely following the situation downtown.”Sporadic exchanges of fire between the attackers and security forces could be heard near the hotel in the city center, an AFP reporter said, in an attack that began around 7:45 p.m. GMT.An Associated Press reporter near the scene said that several cars were also ablaze outside the 147-room Splendid Hotel in downtown Ouagadougou. The AP reporter saw an armored vehicle with security forces arrive nearly three hours after the attack.A video uploaded to YouTube claimed to document the attack from near the hotel.Witness Vital Nounagnon told the AP that he saw four men attack the hotel and neighboring Cappuccino Cafe about 7:30 p.m. Another witness who gave only his first name, Gilbert, said that when security forces first arrived, they turned around rather than confront the attackers.“But we know that the gunmen won’t get out of the hotel alive,” he said. “Our country is not for jihadists or terrorists. They got it wrong.”While Burkina Faso has largely been spared the violence wracked by Islamic extremist groups in Mali, a Romanian national was abducted last April. Jihadists have attacked hotels before in neighboring Mali, including a devastating attack on the Radisson Blu hotel in November that left 20 people dead.Burkina Faso, a largely Muslim country, has been in turmoil since its longtime president was ousted in a popular uprising in late 2014. Last September members of a presidential guard launched a coup that lasted only about a week. The transitional government returned to power until Burkina Faso’s November election ushered in new leaders.

Al-Qaeda attack on Burkina Faso hotel kills 20-AFP-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

Ouagadougou (AFP) - At least 20 people have been killed and another 15 wounded Friday in an ongoing Al-Qaeda attack on a hotel in the capital of Burkina Faso popular with United Nations staff and westerners. Gunshots and explosions rocked Ouagadougou's four-star Splendid hotel and the nearby "Cappuccino" restaurant as Burkinabe forces prepared an assault to rescue hostages still trapped inside the hotel.Officials said French forces could join a counter-assault on the hotel, where assailants were apparently still holed up more than three hours after the attack began. The attack comes less than two months after a jihadist hostage siege at the luxury Radisson Blu Hotel in the Malian capital Bamako in November, in which 20 people died including 14 foreigners."We know that there are victims and there are hostages. Currently the area is blocked by security forces waiting for an assault to free the hostages," Foreign Minister Alpha Barry told AFP.Around 10 vehicles were on fire in the streets near the hotel in Ouagadougou, not far from the city's international airport. The head of the city's main hospital confirmed at least 20 dead and another 15 injured, and witnesses said the assailants were still holed up in the 147-room hotel.A Cappuccino staff member, reached by telephone, also said several people had been killed at the restaurant, but was not able to give an exact toll.- Sporadic fire -Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the attack, according to US-based monitoring group SITE.The "mujahideen brothers" of AQIM "broke into a restaurant of one of the biggest hotels in the capital of Burkina Faso, and are now entrenched and the clashes are continuing with the enemies of the religion", SITE quoted the group as saying.Sporadic exchanges of fire could be heard between the attackers and security forces near the hotel, which often has UN staff among its guests and has security checks at its entrances.Barry said Burkina Faso may enlist the support of French special forces, who have a permanent presence in the country, to deal with the unfolding situation. An AFP reporter at one point saw three men clad in turbans firing at the scene on Avenue Kwame Nkrumah, one of Ouagadougou's main thoroughfares.A witness also reported seeing four assailants who were of Arab or white appearance and "wearing turbans".The French embassy said on its website that a "terrorist attack" was underway and urged people to avoid the area. An Air France flight from Paris to Ouagadougou was diverted to neighbouring Niger. The Burkinabe army meanwhile revealed that an armed group had carried out an attack earlier in the day near the border with Mali, killing two people."In the afternoon around 2:00 pm (1400 GMT), around 20 heavily-armed unidentified individuals carried out an attack against gendarmes in the village of Tin Abao," the army said in a statement, adding that an officer and a civilian had been killed and two people were wounded.- Unprecedented attack -Several attacks have taken place in Burkina Faso in recent months, but no such assaults have yet hit the capital. In April the Romanian security chief of a mine in northern Tambao was kidnapped in a move claimed by Al-Murabitoun, a jihadist group run by notorious Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar.Al-Murabitoun claimed November's Mali hotel attack -- although another jihadist group from central Mali has also said it was responsible for the siege in which some 150 staff and guests were held hostage for several hours.Burkina Faso is part of the G5 Sahel grouping that counts the fight against terrorism as part of its remit. It has also offered support to France's Barkhane counter-terror mission, spanning five countries in Africa's restive Sahel region, and French special forces are stationed in Ouagadougou's suburbs.Last month, Burkina Faso swore in Roch Marc Christian Kabore as president, completing the troubled West African state's transition after the overthrow of its longtime ruler Blaise Compaore in 2014 and a failed coup attempt in September.Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in October 2014, when Compaore sought to extend his rule, forcing him to step down after ruling the poor, landlocked country with an iron fist for 27 years.

Poll: Arab Muslim youths say IS, Qaeda distort Islam-Over 55% of respondents in Palestinian territories say radical jihadist groups pervert religion’s teachings-By AFP January 16, 2016, 1:06 am-the times of israel

A majority of Arab Muslim youths see the actions of extremists such as the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda as a perversion of Islam’s teachings, according to a new poll. The Zogby Research Services poll of 5,374 young Muslim men and women from the Middle East and North Africa also found that many millennials blame corruption and repressive governments for the rise of jihadist groups.“At least three-quarters of millennial respondents in all countries surveyed” said movements like IS and Al-Qaeda “are either a complete perversion of Islam’s teachings or mostly wrong,” the polling firm said. The survey was conducted in October and November 2015 with respondents aged 15 to 34 in Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and the Palestinian territories.More than 90 percent of respondents in Morocco and the UAE called both extremist groups a “complete perversion of Islam,” as did 83 percent of respondents in Egypt and more than 60 percent in Bahrain and Jordan.More than 55 percent of respondents in the Palestinian territories and Saudi Arabia also said the radical groups were distorting Islam’s teachings.More than 30 percent of those polled in many countries, including 69 percent of respondents in the UAE and 50 percent in Morocco, said “corrupt, repressive, and unrepresentative governments” were the main causes of young men and women joining extremist groups.Others blamed extreme religious teachings and poor levels of education.“In most countries, the majority says that religion does not need to be reformed” but rather that religious discourse “needs to be made more relevant,” the polling firm’s chief James Zogby said while releasing the survey results.

Kerry to meet with Zarif as US signals end to Iran sanctions in sight-Top American, Iranian diplomats to hold Vienna talks after IAEA says report on Tehran nuclear compliance due Saturday-By AFP January 15, 2016, 10:53 pm-the times of israel

US Secretary of State John Kerry is heading to Vienna on Saturday for talks with his EU and Iranian counterparts, Federica Mogherini and Mohammad Javed Zarif, on the Iran nuclear deal, the State Department said Friday. The trip comes amid speculation that the United Nation’s Vienna-based nuclear watchdog is about to announce Iran has fulfilled its side of the deal to put an atomic bomb beyond its reach. The US is waiting for the nod from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) before lifting the crippling sanctions that ultimately drove Tehran to the negotiating table, the White House said Friday. In order for the economic measures to be lifted, Iran must meet certain conditions outlined in an agreement on its nuclear program with world powers reached in July 2015.State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Kerry will meet with Zarif and Mogherini to discuss the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program.“As we’ve said, all parties have continued making steady progress toward ‘Implementation Day’ of the JCPOA, which will ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program,” Toner said.International and US officials have refused to confirm that implementation of the agreement will begin Saturday, but agree that it will start in the coming days and Iran expects it before Sunday.Diplomatic sources said earlier Friday that the IAEA will likely confirm on Saturday morning that Iran has complied with the terms of last July’s landmark deal. The eagerly awaited report, which Iran had said could be released Friday, will clear the way for the lifting of the sanctions on the Islamic Republic. It will say that Iran has scaled down key areas of its nuclear activities in line with the July 2014 agreement, which aimed to render impossible any dash to build nuclear weapons. The measures include Iran slashing by two-thirds its number of uranium enrichment centrifuges, removing the core of its Arak reactor and sharply reducing its stock of uranium.White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday that Iran was making “important progress” toward curbing its nuclear program, and that it was possible Tehran had already completed all the necessary steps. But, he said, Iran would not get any sanctions relief until the IAEA independently verified that all steps have been completed.

VIENNA, Austria (AFP) — The UN atomic watchdog will likely confirm on Saturday morning that Iran has complied with the terms of last July’s landmark deal, diplomatic sources said Friday. The eagerly-awaited report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which Iran had said could be released Friday, will clear the way for the lifting of painful sanctions on Tehran. It will say that Iran has scaled down key areas of its nuclear activities in line with the July 2014 agreement, which aimed to render impossible any dash to build nuclear weapons. The measures include Iran slashing by two-thirds its number of uranium enrichment centrifuges, removing the core of its Arak reactor and sharply reducing its stock of uranium. The US is waiting for the nod from the UN’s atomic agency before lifting the sanctions that ultimately drove the Islamic republic to the negotiating table, the White House said Friday. In order for the economic measures to be lifted, Iran must meet certain conditions outlined in an agreement on its nuclear program with world powers reached in July 2015.White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Iran was making “important progress” toward curbing its nuclear program, and that it was possible Tehran had already completed all the necessary steps. But he said Iran would not get any sanctions relief until the International Atomic Energy Agency has independently verified that all steps have been completed. The US, he said, wants to make sure Iran doesn’t “cut any corners.”The hard-fought agreement was sealed in Vienna after two years of rollercoaster negotiations that began in earnest after the June 2013 election of Hassan Rouhani as Iran’s president.

Male refugees banned from German pool over harassment complaints-New national poll finds 66% believe country can’t handle migrant influx, two weeks after Cologne mass sexual assaults-By Frank Jordans January 15, 2016, 10:32 pm-the times of israel

BERLIN (AP) — A town in western Germany has banned male refugees from a swimming pool after complaints of harassment from female bathers and staff — news that comes as a national poll Friday showed that Germans are becoming increasingly concerned about the country’s ability to integrate the huge numbers of asylum-seekers who arrived last year.Markus Schnapka, who heads the social affairs department in Bornheim, said other visitors had complained of sexual harassment by men living in a nearby shelter for asylum seekers. He said none of the complaints were on the criminal level, and the pool had agreed the ban would end once social workers confirmed the men “got the message.”Bornheim is a few kilometers south of Cologne, which saw hundreds of robberies and sexual assaults during New Year’s celebrations that police blamed largely on foreigners. The attacks have stoked a fierce debate in Germany about how to integrate the almost 1.1 million asylum-seekers who arrived last year.In the poll published Friday, 66 percent of the 1,203 respondents said Germany can’t handle the migrant influx, up from 46 percent in December. The percentage who thought the country could manage so many refugees fell from 51 percent in December to 37 percent during the Jan. 12-14 poll conducted for public broadcaster ZDF.The share of Germans who believe crime will increase rose to 70 percent, compared with 62 percent the last time the question was asked in October. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 points. The poll also showed that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s popularity had declined somewhat compared with the previous month. The assaults in Cologne appear to have contributed to the shift in opinion for some. A third of the respondents said their attitude toward asylum seekers and refugee issues had changed due to the attacks, which have dominated media coverage in Germany this month. But the majority, 66 percent, said it hadn’t changed their opinion.A spokesman for Cologne’s prosecutors said authorities are still receiving more criminal complaints in relation to the New Year’s attacks. Police have said the perpetrators were among about 1,000 drunken men primarily of “Arab or North African origin,” some of whom were asylum seekers.A total of 751 people have filed 676 criminal complaints, including 347 allegations of sexual assault, said spokesman Ulrich Bremer.

Pakistan PM vows to eradicate honour killings after Oscar nod-AFP-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed Pakistan would eradicate "evil" honour killings as he congratulated director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on her Oscar nomination for a harrowing documentary on the practice."A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness", which follows the story of a rare survivor, was nominated in the documentary short category of the Academy Awards on Thursday.Hundreds of women are murdered by their relatives in Pakistan each year on the grounds of defending family "honour".Their male murderers are then "pardoned" by relatives under the country's controversial Islamic blood money laws that allow murderers to escape punishment.A statement from the prime minister's office late Thursday offered Chinoy, who made history in 2012 when she won Pakistan's first Oscar for the another documentary, Sharif's congratulations."Honour killings, the theme of the film, afflict several segments of Pakistani society," it quoted Sharif as saying. He "expressed the government's commitment to rid Pakistan of this evil by bringing in appropriate legislation", the statement continued, adding that Chinoy's "insights" could prove helpful.Chinoy said on Twitter that she was "delighted" that Sharif had made the commitment."Next step is to push all the politicians to call a joint session & get the anti honor crime bill passed that has lapsed in parliament!" she said in another tweet."There is no Honor in Honor Killing- It is not part of our religion or culture- It is a stain on our society," she said.Chinoy was feted across Pakistan in 2012 when she won the country's first Oscar for "Saving Face", a 40-minute documentary that exposed the horrors endured by women who survive devastating acid attacks. It focuses on two women, Zakia and Rukhsana, as they fight to rebuild their lives after being attacked by their husbands, and British Pakistani plastic surgeon Mohammad Jawad who tries to help repair their shattered faces.Acid attacks, which disfigure and often blind their overwhelmingly female victims, have long been used to settle personal or family scores in Pakistan, with hundreds of cases reported each year. The attacks along with honour killings fit a wider pattern of eroding women's rights in the conservative Muslim nation, where women are frequently treated as second-class citizens and there is no law against domestic violence.

Pakistani boy cuts off own hand after blasphemy mistake: police-AFP-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

A 15-year-old Pakistani boy cut off his own hand believing he had committed blasphemy, only to be celebrated by his parents and neighbours for the act, police told AFP Friday.Local police chief Nausher Ahmed described how an imam told a gathering at a village mosque that those who love the Prophet Mohammad always say their prayers, then asked who among the crowd had stopped praying.Mohammad Anwar, 15, raised his hand by mistake after apparently mishearing the question. The crowd swiftly accused him of blasphemy so he went to his house and cut off the hand he had raised, put it on a plate, and presented it to the cleric, the police chief said. The incident took place at a village in Hujra Shah Muqeem district, some 125 kilometres (77 miles) south of Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, about four days ago, according to the policeman.Ahmed said that he has seen a video in which the boy is greeted by villagers in the street as his parents proclaim their pride. No complaint has been made, he said, so no police report has been filed and there will be no investigation.Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistan, an Islamic republic of some 200 million, where even unproven allegations frequently stir mob violence and lynchings.Critics including European governments say the country's blasphemy laws are often misused to settle personal scores.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea on Saturday called for the conclusion of a peace treaty with the United States and a halt to U.S. military exercises with South Korea to end its nuclear tests. The isolated state has long sought a peace treaty with the United States, as well as an end to the exercises by South Korea and the United States, which has about 28,500 troops based in South Korea."Still valid are all proposals for preserving peace and stability on the peninsula and in Northeast Asia including the ones for ceasing our nuclear test and the conclusion of a peace treaty in return for U.S. halt to joint military exercises," North Korea's official KCNA news agency cited a spokesman for the country's foreign ministry as saying early on Saturday.Asked if the United States would consider a halt to joint exercises, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said it had alliance commitments to South Korea."We are going to continue to make sure the alliance is ready in all respects to act in defense of the South Korean people and the security of the peninsula," he told a regular news briefing.Asked earlier this week about North Korea's call for a peace treaty, the State Department reiterated its position that it remained open to dialogue with North Korea but said "the onus is on North Korea to take meaningful actions toward denuclearization and refrain from provocations."The two Koreas remain in a technical state of war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.North Korea said on Jan. 6 it had tested a hydrogen bomb, provoking condemnation from its neighbors and the United States.Experts have expressed doubt that the North's fourth nuclear test was of a hydrogen bomb, as the blast was roughly the same size as that from its previous test, of a less powerful atomic bomb, in 2013.Pyongyang is under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear and missile programs.(Reporting by Tony Munroe in Seoul; additional reporting by David Brunnstrom in Washington, editing by Andrew Roche and Tom Brown)

Pentagon drops Maine from list of potential missile defense sites-Reuters By Andrea Shalal-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said on Friday it had dropped a site in Redington Township, Maine, from a list of potential U.S. sites to deploy more ground-based missile defense interceptors in addition to those in Alaska and California. The agency said other potential sites in New York, Michigan and Ohio remained under consideration, but stressed that no decision had been made to deploy or construct an additional site.MDA said the decision was made after extensive surveys of the potential Maine site, the Center for Security Forces Detachment Kittery Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Facility (SERE East)."The (Maine) site presented irreversible environmental impacts, significant constructability concerns, and extensive costs associated with developing infrastructure in a remote area," MDA said in a statement. The Pentagon said in January 2014 that it would conduct environmental impact studies for the four possible missile defense sites in line with a directive from Congress in 2013.The Missile Defense Agency reiterated on Friday that current interceptors on the West Coast would be able to defend the country against missile attacks from countries such as North Korea and Iran. U.S. lawmakers have expressed concern about Iran's efforts to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles.MDA said that completing the required site studies and environmental impact statements would shorten the timeline to build such a site, if a decision were made in the future to proceed.Kingston Reif, director of disarmament and threat reduction policy at the nonprofit Arms Control Association, said the remaining three environmental impact studies were due to be completed by the end of fiscal year 2016, which ends Sept. 30.Riki Ellison, founder of the nonprofit Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, said the Maine site was likely deemed too far north to provide protection for sites in the central United States.(Reporting by Andrea Shalal)

Huckabee on Ted Cruz's Eligibility: 'This Is Problematic'-by ABC News-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

In the spin room after the GOP debate, Huckabee said legal scholars had made a "compelling" case that Cruz's eligibility was in question.

Trump strikes back at Cruz as Bush lands key endorsement-Lindsey Graham, a powerful South Carolina senator, says ‘Jeb Bush is worthy to be commander-in-chief on day one’-By SERGIO BUSTOS and Bill Barrow January 15, 2016, 11:40 pm-the times of israel

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) — With two weeks to go until Iowans head to the polls in the first vote of the 2016 primary season, Republican front-runner Donald Trump ramped up his attacks against rival Ted Cruz on Friday, while Jeb Bush scored a key endorsement for his White House bid.South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham announced he is backing Jeb Bush for the Republican presidential nomination, praising the former Florida governor’s approach to national security.“I have concluded without any hesitation, any doubt, that Jeb Bush is worthy to be commander-in-chief on day one,” Graham said Friday at a joint press conference with Bush.As South Carolina’s senior senator, Graham has been a coveted endorsement for some candidates running for the Republican nomination because he holds clout among establishment Republicans in South Carolina, one of the critical early voting primary states. Bush was initially considered a serious contender for the Republican nomination for president, but his campaign eventually lagged behind candidates like Trump and Cruz, who have each positioned themselves as anti-establishment alternatives.Graham launched his own presidential campaign last summer, but dropped out of the race last month having mustered little support in the polls.Graham noted that Bush was the lone candidate in Thursday’s debate to explicitly reject Trump’s continued call to indefinitely ban non-citizen Muslims from entering the United States.“The thing I admire most about Jeb is that he has stayed true to who he is, that he hasn’t tried to get ahead in a contested primary by embracing demagoguery,” Graham said.“Donald Trump will damage the ability to grow this party. He will get creamed with Hispanics and young women,” Graham said. “Ted Cruz is an ideologue that has no ability, in my view, to bring the country together. So the top two guys, I think, would lose an election we can’t afford to lose.”Graham, 60, singled out another former rival, Sen. Marco Rubio, as “great on national security” and predicted Florida’s junior senator “will be president one day.” But Graham said the 44-year-old isn’t ready. “We’re looking for the whole package here. At 44, I was not ready to be president of the United States.”Meanwhile, Trump went on the offensive Friday, calling Cruz “strident” and labeling his remarks about “New York values” in the GOP debate “disgraceful.” Appearing in an extended interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe from Des Moines, Iowa, Trump said Cruz “hurt himself” in Thursday’s debate with his sweeping remarks about the political ideologies of New Yorkers.Cruz said in the debate: “everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro- gay-marriage, focus around money and the media.”His comments evoked a provocative, front-page response from the New York Daily News Friday telling Cruz to “go back to Canada,” a reference to the senator’s Canadian birth which Trump has raised as a potential barrier to his rival’s right to run for president. At the debate, Trump countered with an emotional recounting of his hometown’s response to the Sept. 11 attacks.“When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York,” he said. “That was a very insulting statement that Ted made.”Asked by MSNBC Friday about the exchange with Cruz, Trump said: “Y’know, he’s a good debater, but he’s very strident, and a lot of people are not going to like that.”Protesters briefly interrupted Trump’s appearance on the MSNBC show, which broadcasted live from Iowa, chanting, “Donald Trump. Stop the Hate!”More than two hours of prime-time argument Thursday presented voters with a sharp contrast to the optimistic vision of America that President Barack Obama painted in his State of the Union address earlier this week. The debate was one of two final opportunities for the candidates to lay out their visions for the country ahead of the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses. In Iowa, where polls indicate a narrowing race between Trump and Cruz, Trump released his second television ad on Friday, which marks a significant departure from the first one he released earlier this year. While that ad painted an alarming picture of a country under attack by jihadists and immigrants entering the country illegally, the new ad is much more traditional, featuring footage of Trump speaking at a recent rally in Lowell, Massachusetts. In the new ad, Trump runs through his central campaign platforms, including his vows to strengthen the country’s borders, “fix” it’s health care system and the military, and take better care of veterans. The ad will be airing in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire, according to the campaign. The Trump campaign is also giving out free tickets to the new movie, “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.” The campaign has rented a theater in Iowa, for the free screening on Friday. The film depicts the events of the September 2012 attack on the US consulate in Libya that killed four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. It follows a group of ex-military security contractors trying to save American lives in a dusty and hostile Benghazi.Several GOP presidential candidates have slammed Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton for her role before and after the attack in Benghazi, saying she knew from the start it was an act of terrorism.

Rubio and Christie battle for establishment lane-Jon Ward-January 15, 2016-YAHOONEWS

For much of the night Thursday, the sixth Republican presidential primary debate was a split-screen competition, with two pairs of candidates fighting separate battles. As Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz slugged it out for the top spot in the Republican presidential primary polls, the two men competing to represent the establishment wing engaged with each other.Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie hope to emerge as the champion of Republican voters who do not like Cruz and Trump. In New Hampshire, for example, support in the polls for Rubio, Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Ohio Gov. John Kasich amounts to 42 percent. Trump leads the pack, but with only 30 percent. Each of the four hopes to be the one to break out of the pack and emerge as the alternative to Trump and Cruz. So each has been taking shots at the others, but Rubio and Christie’s broadsides at each other have been particularly harsh.Late in the debate, Cruz and Rubio clashed — as they did onstage last month — on immigration. But the fight that matters most to Rubio now is with Christie, and it will likely get more intense as the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses and the Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary approach.Debate moderator Neil Cavuto of Fox News asked the two Republicans about their recent back-and-forth, in which Christie charged that Rubio was trying to “slime his way to the White House,” and a super-PAC supporting Rubio portrayed Christie as a liberal in step with President Obama.Rubio noted — after saying that he liked Christie — that the governor supported the Common Core education standards and gun control, and that he had once, years ago, made a personal donation to Planned Parenthood.“All I’m saying is: Our next president has to be someone that undoes the damage Barack Obama has done to this country. It cannot be someone that agrees with his agenda,” Rubio said.Cavuto asked Rubio if he considered Christie a liberal. Rubio stopped short of saying he did, but repeated many of his charges and added one more, that Christie supported Obama’s nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.“Unfortunately, Governor Christie has endorsed many of the ideas that Barack Obama supports, whether it is Common Core or gun control or the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor or the donation he made to Planned Parenthood,” Rubio said. “Our next president, and our Republican nominee, cannot be someone who supports those positions.”Christie flung back at Rubio the Florida senator’s own response to Bush when the former governor attacked him in an earlier debate. At the time, Rubio said that Bush was simply doing what political consultants told him to do, because he was slipping in polls.“I stood on the stage and watched Marco, rather indignantly, look at Governor Bush and say, ‘Someone told you that because we’re running for the same office, that criticizing me will get you to that office,’” Christie said, leaning on his rostrum and looking at Rubio. “It appears that the same someone has been whispering in old Marco’s ear too.”Christie disputed Rubio’s charges. “I didn’t support Sonia Sotomayor,” he said. “Secondly, I never wrote a check to Planned Parenthood.” And he listed steps he said he had taken to veto gun control measures: vetoes of a 50-caliber rifle ban, a clip-size reduction plan and a statewide ID system proposal.Common Core, he said, has been “eliminated” in New Jersey.Christie went on to dismiss Rubio’s accomplishments as a senator — “What you get to do is just talk and talk and talk” — and then mocked him for changing his tone after they became rivals. Christie came back to his charge that Rubio was changing his stripes and abandoning his high-minded tone of a few months ago.“I like Marco too, and two years ago, he called me a conservative reformer that New Jersey needed,” Christie said. “That was before he was running against me. Now that he is, he’s changed his tune.”But Rubio failed to press his attack on several points where Christie would seem to be vulnerable. In 1994, Christie did say he had donated money to Planned Parenthood, but now says he was misquoted. He was pro-choice in the early 1990s, but says he changed his views after hearing his daughter’s heartbeat in utero. In the early 1990s, Christie supported an assault-weapons ban, but now admits he’s changed his mind. He defended Common Core as recently as 2013, but last year abandoned this position. On Sotomayor, Christie said he wouldn’t have nominated Sotomayor, but did say, “I support her confirmation.”Late in the debate, as Cruz and Rubio debated tax policy, Christie interrupted to tout his own experience as a governor and once again reinforce his experience as a state executive — in contrast to Rubio’s job as a lawmaker in a body of 100 senators. And he punctuated it with a dismissive put-down.“I’d like to interrupt this debate on the floor of the Senate,” Christie said. He reminded the audience that the question had been about entitlements, and said he wanted to talk about that subject, projecting an air of exasperation with Cruz and Rubio for not addressing the topic at hand. When Rubio started to say that he would be happy to talk about entitlements, Christie brought him up short.“You already had your chance, Marco. You blew it,” Christie thundered.

Baltimore jury was close to acquittal in police manslaughter trial: paper-Reuters-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

(Reuters) - The Baltimore jury that heard the first police trial connected with the death of a black man while in custody was one vote short of acquitting the officer of involuntary manslaughter when a judge declared a mistrial, the Baltimore Sun reported on Friday.William Porter was the first of six officers to face trial on criminal charges in connection with the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of a broken neck suffered while in police custody in April, setting off a day of riots and arson in Baltimore. The Sun cited a juror it did not identify by name in saying 11 of the 12 jurors had been prepared to acquit Porter of the most serious charge he faced when Baltimore City Circuit Judge Barry Williams declared the jury was hung after 16 hours of deliberation last month.Porter is scheduled to be retried in June.Prosecutors have said they plan to ask Porter to testify against Officer Caesar Goodson, the driver of the van that Gray was injured in, who is charged with second-degree depraved heart murder, the most serious of the charges in the case.Porter's attorneys have asked an appeals court to prevent him from testifying in Goodson's trial, saying that he risks incriminating himself. The appeal could delay the trials of the five other officers, which are scheduled to play out over the next few months. The Baltimore Sun reported that the jury in Porter's trial, which was comprised of seven black people and five whites, had been leaning toward finding him guilty of the lesser charges he faced, including reckless endangerment and misconduct in office."Had we continued discussions, there's great likelihood that the numbers could have switched, but I couldn't say which way," the newspaper quoted the juror as saying. The judge in the case asked the jurors not to discuss their experiences publicly. Reuters was not able to reach the juror to confirm the account.Gray's death was one of a series of police killings of black men in cities including New York, Ferguson, Missouri and Cleveland that sparked a nationwide wave of protests over race and justice.(Reporting by Scott Malone in Boston; Editing by Bill Trott)

4,000 artifacts stored at Oregon refuge held by armed group-Associated Press By REBECCA BOONE-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

Thousands of archaeological artifacts — and maps detailing where more can be found — are kept inside the national wildlife refuge buildings currently being held by an armed group of protestors angry over federal land policy.Ryan Bundy, one of the leaders of the group occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Oregon, says they have no real interest in the antiquities. Still, their access to the artifacts and maps has some worried that looters could take advantage of the situation."There's a huge market for artifacts, especially artifacts that have provenance, where you can identify where they came from," said Carla Burnside, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's refuge archeologist.More than 300 recorded prehistoric sites are scattered across the refuge, including burial grounds, ancient villages and petroglyphs. Some of the artifacts — including spears, stone tools, woven baskets and beads — date back 9,800 years. The artifacts and remains came from ancestors of the Burns Paiute Tribe. Chairwoman Charlotte Rodrique says she feels helpless knowing that her tribe's cultural heritage is now in the hands of the armed group."As far as I'm concerned, our history is just another hostage," Rodrique said. The tribe has sent a letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. attorney for Oregon, Billy Williams, asking that members of the armed group be prosecuted if any artifacts or maps are damaged or missing.__WHY AREN'T THE RELICS AT A MUSEUM?-About 7,000 artifacts and samples from the refuge are kept at a museum in Eugene, Oregon. But 4,000 more are kept at the refuge for research.Only Burnside has a key to the room containing the artifacts and the maps. She's since seen pictures of the occupiers in her office, adjacent to the room where the artifacts are stored. The group has been looking through government files at the site, but it is unclear if they've gone through the room with the artifacts. Bundy told The Associated Press that he's seen the artifacts and lots of maps, but he didn't know what the maps illustrated. The artifacts and maps are legally protected by the 1979 Archeological Resources Protection Act and other federal laws.Rodrique said she doesn't know if members of the group have disturbed the artifacts but wants the artifacts and documents catalogued as the occupation continues and once it comes to an end."If the occupiers disturb, damage, remove, alter or deface any archaeological resource on the refuge property, the Tribe requests that the United States bring criminal charges," Rodrique wrote in her letter to federal officials.___WHAT IS THE ARMED GROUP DOING WITH THE ARTIFACTS?-Bundy said they're not interested in the artifacts and would turn them over to the Burns Paiute Tribe, if asked."If the Native Americans want those, then we'd be delighted to give them to them," he said.Rodrique said the tribe is not going to legitimize the armed group's occupation of the refuge by negotiating with them."That's our history, our ancestors' possessions and remains," Rodrique said. "It's hard to explain, as a native person, what that means to us. That's the very proof of our existence in this country." Bundy said he didn't think it was likely that anyone would use the maps to loot the site."We haven't really been thinking along those lines," Bundy said.Removing artifacts from federal property without a permit is illegal.___WHAT ABOUT THE PREHISTORIC SITES?-Scientists are also worried about unintentional damage that could be done to the prehistoric sites by cattle, vehicles and heavy equipment. The group at the ranch has driven road graders and other large construction equipment around the refuge headquarters buildings, but Bundy said Thursday they haven't used the machinery to move any earth. He wouldn't rule out that possibility, however. In 2014, Ryan Bundy and supporters of the Bundy family rode ATVs on federal land closed to motorized vehicles in Utah as part of a protest. Their route took them along an illegal trail that crossed through Native American archeological sites.___HAVE THE SITES BEEN LOOTED BEFORE?- While well-known petroglyphs or other prehistoric sites are occasionally publicized for public viewing, federal land managers often go to great lengths to keep such locations secret when they can't be safely protected from vandals and looters.Looting has long been a problem at the refuge, with the first documented instance recorded in 1979, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service's comprehensive conservation plan."It's a huge problem in Oregon, especially in the southeast portion of the state," said Dennis Griffin, the state's archaeologist. "More often than not, when they are caught, it's connected to drug running or seeking quick money on eBay."An online search of "great basin artifacts for sale" yields arrowheads, stone pestles and other items, many priced at hundreds of dollars each.___WHY DOES IT MATTER?-Burnside said the artifacts are part of the ancestry of the Burns Paiute Tribe and are priceless to science."There's so much you can gain from looking at one artifact: Where the stone came from, how far they traveled, how it was used, the skill of the person who made it," she said. The tribe works extensively with federal officials on the archeology projects. In her letter, Rodrique said the tribe knows it's a difficult time for Burnside and other refuge employees, and thanked the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for its cooperation and help."All I want is that our past be respected, that things don't go by the wayside, that they're not destroyed by cattle," Rodrique said in a phone interview."Their history is being hijacked by these people," said Donald Grayson, an anthropologist and archeology expert at the University of Washington.___HOW DOES BUNDY WANT THE ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES HANDLED?-Bundy said people interested in archeology are welcome to explore the refuge, but that cattle ranchers and loggers should have priority when it comes to land use."Before white man came, so to speak, there was nothing to keep cattle from tromping on those things," Bundy said.Though some countries had domesticated cattle 10,000 years ago, the animals came to the United States with European settlers."We also recognize that the Native Americans had the claim to the land, but they lost that claim," Bundy said. "There are things to learn from cultures of the past, but the current culture is the most important."

Italy in row with EU on €3bn Turkey fund By Eric Maurice-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 15. Jan, 18:09-Relations between Italy and the EU took a sour turn Friday (15 January), as Italy raised objections to the EU's €3 billion plan for Turkey and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker accused the Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, of "demonising" the EU."The mood between Italy and the rest of the EU, and the commission in particular is not the best ever," Juncker said at a press conference at the commission. The commission chief said that Renzi "vilifies and criticises the commission on every street corner.""I don't understand why he is doing this," he said."The commission is being insulted. I grin and bear it, I put my resentment and my irritation, which is significant, in my pocket," he added. "But people should stop thinking that I'm naive. I am not."The latest reason for Juncker's displeasure with Renzi is Italy's objections over the financing of a plan to help refugees in Turkey. The so-called refugee facility is part of a wider EU-Turkey action plan to reduce the number of migrants coming to Europe."I struggle to understand Italy's amazing reservation about the €3 billion to Turkey because the money is not going to Turkey but is for Syrian refugees in Turkey," Juncker said."These €3 billion are a question of credibility for the EU," he said.Juncker's accusations were rebuked by the Italian finance minister, Pier Carlo Padoan, after a ministers' council across the street."Italy is not blocking anything," he told reporters, before explaining that Italy wants the money for the plan to come from the EU budget.According to the plan announced in October, only €500 million will come from the EU budget, with the remaining €2.5 billion covered by the member states."We think that there is still space in the budget" to cover the €3-billion need "without necessarily requesting member states for additional contributions," he said.Italy is also asking more details about the use of the EU money by Turkey. It wants to know "to what purpose, to which projects, and which sequencing" the funds will go."We need to be clear about the strategy that is underpinning those resources," Padoan said.According to sources, at the last EU summit in December Renzi asked about the exact breakdown of the refugee facility and whether national contributions would be taken into account when the commission grants budget flexibility to member states.Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselblomen, who chaired the meeting Friday, said he hoped that Italy would lift its objections "very very soon"."There was a very strong feeling that we need this facility, we need it very quickly," he said at a press conference. The discussion about the Turkey fund comes amid a series of swings at EU policies from Renzi. In an interview with the Financial Times after the last EU summit, he said "Europe has to serve all 28 countries, not just one,” referring to Germany and EU austerity policies."I know that those who have been in the front line of being the faithful allies of the politics of rigour without growth have lost their jobs," he said after Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy won the election, but got no majority to govern. In December, Renzi also tried to force a discussion on EU sanctions on Russia at the EU summit and raised objections to the Nord Stream II gas pipeline.More recently, after the only Italian member of Juncker's cabinet quit and was replaced by a Briton, Rome said the decision was "unacceptable"."Starting 2016 without an Italian will certainly not facilitate the relationships with Italy," said the Italian under-secretary for Europe, Sandro Gozi.Speaking after Juncker's jab at Renzi Friday, finance minister Padoan tried to calm things down."There is no intent to offend on the part of the Italian government, but a constructive attitude," he said.

GENESIS 1:27-28
27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply,(HAVE LOTS OF CHILDREN) and replenish the earth,(HOMOSEXUALS CAN NOT REPLENISH THE EARTH WITH CHILDREN)(BY HAVING SEX WITH EACH OTHER) and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

GENESIS 2:21-24
21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

MATTHEW 19:4-6
4  And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5  And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

LEVITICUS 18:22-30
22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.
24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:
25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.

Episcopal leader: Church will not reverse gay marriage stand-Associated Press By RACHEL ZOLL-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK (AP) — Presiding Bishop Michael Curry said Friday the U.S. Episcopal Church will not roll back its acceptance of gay marriage despite sanctions imposed this week by Anglican leaders. In a phone interview from England, where he attended the gathering of top Anglican archbishops, Curry said he told his fellow leaders they should expect no change. The top Episcopal legislative body, called General Convention, last year voted overwhelmingly to authorize same-sex marriage ceremonies in church. In response, Anglican leaders Thursday stripped the Episcopal Church of any role in deciding doctrine or determining how the Anglican Communion operates for three years, effectively reducing the church to observer status in the 85 million-member global fellowship."They heard from me directly that that's not something that we're considering," Curry said. "They basically understand we made our decision, and this is who we are, and we're committed to being a house of prayer for all."Curry said the church was resolved to work toward building acceptance of same-sex relationships throughout the Anglican fellowship, which the Episcopal Church represents in the United States. A majority of Anglican leaders at the meeting affirmed the teaching that marriage is only the union of a man and a woman."We are loyal members of the Anglican Communion, but we need to say we must find a better way," Curry said. "I really believe it's part of our vocation." Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican family, had organized the assembly in Canterbury to help avoid a split in the fellowship that had been building for decades over differences about homosexuality, women's ordination and other issues. Those rifts blew wide open in 2003 when the New York-based Episcopal Church consecrated the first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson, in New Hampshire. Ever since, theological conservatives, led by Anglican leaders in Africa, have demanded some penalty for the U.S. church. Many have distanced themselves from the Episcopal Church and in 2009 helped form an alternative to the U.S. denomination, called the Anglican Church in North America.Welby does not have the authority to force a resolution of the conflict. In their statement from this week's meeting, Anglican leaders called the Episcopal Church approval of gay marriage "a fundamental departure from the faith and teaching" of the majority of Anglicans. As a result, Episcopalians "no longer represent us on ecumenical and interfaith bodies," and could not vote or fully participate in Anglican committees, the leaders said. The statement also included a condemnation of "homophobic prejudice and violence" and rejected criminalization of homosexuality, which has become common in African countries."For me, it is a constant source of deep sadness that people are persecuted for their sexuality," Welby said at a news conference in Canterbury Cathedral, at the end of the meeting. He expressed "how sorry I am for the hurt and pain in the past and present that the church has caused and the love sometimes that we have completely failed to show."Outside, gay rights demonstrators, many from Africa, waved signs and sang. "We are here talking about human beings, real people who are having their lives torn apart," said Jayne Ozanne, a leading gay rights activist in the church.Anglicans, who trace their roots to the Church of England, are the third-largest grouping of Christians in the world, behind Roman Catholics and Orthodox. The Anglican Church of Canada is scheduled to vote in July on a proposal that would change church law to allow same-sex marriage. If the change is approved, it would have to be reaffirmed at the church's next legislative meeting, or General Synod, in three years. Archbishop Fred Hiltz, who attended the Canterbury gathering, said the penalty for the Episcopal Church will be a major consideration."Obviously, this whole thing will weigh pretty heavily on the minds of people going into the General Synod," Hiltz said in an interview. "If we vote for a change in the canon on marriage there will be some consequence."At the news conference, Welby underscored that the meeting had averted any break and that the Anglican leaders "unanimously indicated that they wanted the churches of the Anglican Communion to walk together." He announced the next once-a-decade meeting of all Anglican bishops, called the Lambeth Conference, would take place in 2020, an announcement he had delayed as he worked to keep the communion together. Both Welby and Curry said there had been no discussion of the specifics of this process or what would have to happen over the next three years for the Episcopalians to be restored to full participation in the global fellowship. Anglican conservatives, who have affiliated as the Global Anglican Future Conference, said they were pleased with the penalty against the Episcopal Church, but were concerned that the sanctions didn't go far enough and that Anglican leaders did not clearly state what the consequences would be if the Episcopal Church failed to change its position on gay marriage.____Danica Kirka contributed from Canterbury, England.

CDC says closely monitoring outbreak of new bird flu strain-Reuters-JAN 15,16-YAHOONEWS

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is closely monitoring individuals who may have been exposed to the new strain of bird flu that has been found in a flock of turkeys in Indiana, a CDC health official said on Friday.Dr. Michael Jhung, a medical officer at the CDC, said there is no evidence of human infection related to the new bird flu strain known as H7N8, but the agency and local health officials are not taking any chances."There's always the possibility of implications to human health when you see a new flu virus in animals, like we're seeing now in turkeys," Jhung told Reuters in an interview. Jhung said the CDC and local health departments are already implementing a program designed after last year's large bird flu outbreak in poultry, and will monitor people in close contact with infected birds.(Reporting by Julie Steenhuysen; Editing by Chris Reese)

Hurricane Alex 2016: Forecast, Storm Tracker, Path and Updates-Mic By Jessica Eggert-January 14, 2016 12:58 PM-YAHOONEWS

The National Hurricane Center upgraded eastern Atlantic ocean subtropical storm Alex to hurricane status Thursday as it heads toward the coast of Azores, Portugal. The center has issued a five-day hurricane warning and tropical storm warnings for various regions of the Azores islands as Hurricane Alex moves north-northeast toward land at 20 mph. "The Azores Meteorological Service has issued a hurricane warning for the islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira in the central Azores, and a tropical storm warning for the island of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria in the eastern Azores," the National Hurricane Center wrote in its public advisory for Alex, currently located 490 miles off the coast of Azores.Hurricane #Alex advisory 4 issued. #Alex becomes a hurricane, , hurricane warning issued for the azores. is the first January hurricane to form since 1938 and only the fourth January hurricane on record since 1851, CNN reported.Alex's maximum sustained wind as of Thursday was 85 mph and isn't expected to increase Friday, according to the hurricane center. Winds reached 25 miles from the storm's center. The hurricane is expected to increase speed Friday and Saturday, possibly reaching land in Azores on Friday. The storm is expected to produce three to five inches of rain on the islands; seven inches in some areas. The National Hurricane Center warned Azores that the heavy rainfall and wind can cause life-threatening mudslides and dangerous flooding along the shores.Alex is currently several thousand miles off the East Coast of the United States and is not expected to affect the U.S. as it should head farther north to Greenland once it departs from Azores, according to the advisory.

8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Is the US Navy building ships that can't weather rough seas?-The Navy’s newest class of transport ships is currently undergoing maintenance to make the vessels seaworthy, after it was found that design compromises led to weakened hulls susceptible to damage by waves.-Christian Science Monitor By Ben Thompson-January 14, 2016 4:29 PM-YAHOONEWS

The United States Navy will have to shoulder the repair costs for a new class of its ships after discovering that their bows can’t withstand heavy ocean waves, according to Bloomberg. The Navy’s new Expeditionary Fast Transports (EPF) fleet will have to undergo maintenance to repair damages sustained by some of their structures and to reinforce the vessels’ bows. Four of five currently operational ships have been mended so far, while the other five remain under construction in an Alabama shipyard.“The Navy accepted compromises in the bow structure, presumable to save weight, during the building of these ships,” said J. Michael Gilmore, director of the Department of Defense Operational Test & Evaluation, in a September report.“Multiple ships of the class have suffered damage to the bow structure, and repairs/reinforcements are in progress class-wide,” he wrote. The aluminum EPF ships, developed for a total cost of $2.1 billion by Australian shipbuilder Austal Ltd., all share the same structural flaw after Austal’s design recommendation to the Navy weakened the ships’ bows. So far, $2.4 million has been spent on strengthening the bows and more than $4 million on repairs. Even with the additional support, though, the Navy is still unsure if the repairs will be enough to keep the ships’ frameworks intact.“Since the repairs are still in progress, there has been no heavy weather testing yet to verify if the fixes are sufficient,” Marine Corps Maj. Adrian Rankine-Galloway told Bloomberg. Despite the setbacks, the ordering of an 11th fleet vessel was approved for the Navy through the 2016 Consolidated Appropriations Act at a cost of $225 million. The Navy is currently charting its course for another ship model with potential design problems, the Zumwalt-class destroyer. Construction of more than 30 of the advanced Zumwalt class were originally planned, but it is likely that after years of research and ballooning costs only three will ever be completed. The reason: the spiraling costs, and concern that the ships would not be stable in heavy ocean waves.“On the DDG-1000 [The first completed Zumwalt-class ship], with the waves coming at you from behind, when a ship pitches down, it can lose transverse stability as the stern comes out of the water – and basically roll over,” civilian architect Ken Brower in 2007, told Wired. While the Navy hopes to improve the EPF fleet’s integrity, the construction adds nearly one ton of weight to each ship causing the displacement of around 250 gallons of fuel. Gilmore said the change should not affect the ships’ travel ranges, but said in his report that their routes and speeds may still have to be altered to avoid damage.“Operating the ship outside of the SOE (Safe Operating Envelope) or encountering a rogue wave that is outside of the current sea state can result in sea slam events that cause structural damage to the bow structure of the ship,” Gilmore wrote. “The operational restriction of the SOE is a major limitation of the ship class that must be factored into all missions.”
