US sailor shot in Chattanooga attack dies, raising toll to 5-Authorities still investigating incident in which Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez went on shooting rampage at two military facilities-By AP and Times of Israel staff July 18, 2015, 5:41 pm
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez pulled up to his military targets in a rented, silver Mustang convertible, wearing a vest with extra ammunition, wielding at least two long guns and a handgun. His once clean-shaven face was covered with a bushy beard. A short time later, four Marines he had shot lay dead. A sailor wounded by him died Saturday. The image of Abdulazeez described by investigators doesn’t square with the seemingly ordinary man described by neighbors and classmates: A clean-cut wrestler, the brother of a tennis player, the son of parents who drove no-frills cars. A man who played with the neighborhood kids growing up, gave a lift to a neighbor in a snowstorm.Just days before the shootings, Abdulazeez was seen dribbling a soccer ball in his yard. He told two longtime friends he was excited about his new job at a company that makes wire and cable products.“Everything seemed fine. He was normal. He was telling me work was going great,” said Ahmed Saleen Islam, 26, who knew Abdulazeez through the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga and saw him at the mosque two or three nights before the attacks. “We are so shocked and angry … we wish he would have come to us.”Hailey Bureau, 25, recalled sitting next to Abdulazeez in high school because their last names were close alphabetically. She said she broke down when she learned he was the gunman, saying, “It’s so shocking. I imagine him the way I knew him then, laughing and smiling.”Bureau recalled Abdulazeez’s wry sense of humor in a quote next to his yearbook photo: “My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?”The 24-year-old Kuwait-born man opened fire on two US military sites in Chattanooga in an attack that left four Marines dead at the scene and a sailor who succumbed to his injuries later. The death of Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, a reservist serving on active duty at the Chattanooga center, was announced Saturday by the Navy. It’s not clear what set Abdulazeez on the path to violence that ended with him being gunned down by police.Abdulazeez did not appear to have been on federal authorities’ radar before the bloodshed Thursday, officials said. But now counterterrorism investigators are taking a deep look at his online activities and foreign travel.Israel’s Channel 2 TV reported Friday that he spent seven months in Jordan last year. According to the report, his father, a Palestinian who was born in Nablus in the West Bank, was on a US watch list for an unspecified period, and the FBI is investigating whether Abdulazeez, too, was ever on a watch list.“It would be premature to speculate on exactly why the shooter did what he did,” FBI agent Ed Reinhold said. “However, we are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether this person acted alone or was inspired or directed.”In the quiet neighborhood in Hixson, Tennessee, where Abdulazeez lived with his parents in a two-story home, residents and former classmates described an ordinary suburban life. However, court documents allege it was an abusive and turbulent household.Abdulazeez’s mother, Rasmia Ibrahim Abdulazeez, filed a divorce complaint in 2009 accusing her husband, Youssuf Saed Abdulazeez, of beating her repeatedly in front of their children and sexually assaulting her. She also accused him of “striking and berating” the children without provocation. Weeks later, the couple agreed to reconcile, with the father consenting to go to counseling.Abdulazeez graduated from Red Bank High School in Chattanooga, where he was on the wrestling team. A fellow Red Bank High graduate, Hussnain Javid, said Abdulazeez was “very outgoing.”“Obviously something has happened since then,” said Sam Plank, who graduated two years ahead of Abdulazeez but hadn’t crossed paths with him since 2006. “He was as Americanized as anyone else.”Bilal Sheikh, 25, said he had known Abdulazeez since they were teenagers and he never expressed any negative feelings about the United States or members of the military.“He never said anything that would have been a red flag,” Sheikh said. “I have so many questions in my head. I want to know why? What made him crack all of a sudden? It’s mind-boggling.”Abdulazeez got an engineering degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2012 and worked as an intern a few years ago at the Tennessee Valley Authority, the federally owned utility that operates power plants and dams.He was conditionally hired as an engineer at the Perry nuclear power plant near Cleveland and spent 10 days there before he was let go in May 2013 because he failed a background check, said Todd Schneider, a FirstEnergy Corp. spokesman. A federal official briefed on the matter told The Associated Press that Abdulazeez was dismissed because he failed a drug test. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing law enforcement investigation. For the past three months, Abdulazeez had been working at Superior Essex Inc. In April, he was arrested on a drunken driving charge.Karen Jones, who lived next to the family for 14 years, said she was surprised last weekend by his appearance when she saw him walking with another man in woods behind the house, where he liked to shoot pellet guns at a red target in a tree.“He had this big beard, which was not how he used to be,” Jones said. The official Kuwait News Agency on Friday quoted the Interior Ministry as saying while Abdulazeez was born in Kuwait, he was of Jordanian origin.A US official who was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity said Abdulazeez was in Jordan last year for months, and those travels and anyone he met with are being looked at.
Terror Dad of Tennessee Shooter is Palestinian-New details show terror list father of murderer of 4 Marines hailed from Shechem, Samaria, before moving to Kuwait and on to US.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 7/17/2015, 1:30 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
After it was revealed that the Muslim shooter who on Thursday murdered four US Marines in Chattanooga, Tennessee was the son of a man who previously was on the terrorist watch list, new details have surfaced about the father. It has been widely reported that the shooter, Muhammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, was a naturalized American born in Kuwait. While it's true his mother Rasmia Abdulazeez is from Kuwait, where Muhammod was born in 1990, multiple reports reveal that the attacker's father Youssuf Abdulazeez actually hailed from Shechem (Nablus) in Samaria, a city under Palestinian Authority (PA) control.Apparently Abdulazeez the father traveled to Kuwait where he married and had Muhammod, before the family relocated to the US.The Palestinian connection was also demonstrated by pictures posted on Facebook recently by Muhammod's family member, either a sister or cousin, who put up an image featuring a fist grasping a loudspeaker in the colors of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) flag with the words: "speak for Palestine!"Abdulazeez lived with his parents in Hixson, Tennessee, located near Chattanooga where the shooting took place. His father reportedly is employed by the City of Chattanooga Public Works Department and as of 2005 was appointed to be an unarmed special policeman by the Chattanooga City Council, reports Business Insider. That comes despite the fact that Youssuf Abdulazeez was investigated several years ago for donating money to an organization possibly connected to a foreign terrorist organization. He was on a terrorist watch list and even was questioned during a trip out of the country, but eventually his name was taken off the terrorist list.Experts have said the attack by the 24-year-old Abdulazeez fits the mold of attacks Islamic State (ISIS) has called for, although FBI officials on Thursday night said they don't have "anything that directly ties" the attacker to any foreign terrorist organizations. The attacker, seen driving an open-top Ford Mustang, first went to a joint military recruiting center in a strip mall and sprayed it with gunfire, riddling the glass facade with bullet holes. He then drove off to a Naval Reserve Center about 6 miles away, fatally shooting the four Marines before being shot and killed in a firefight with police.Abdulazeez's Palestinian connection is particularly notable given the similarities of his attack on an army base with the 2009 deadly shooting rampage at the Fort Hood army base, conducted by Palestinian American Army Major Nidal Hasan.Hasan admitted to conducting the shooting as an Islamist terror attack, during which he shouted "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is greater), although initial government reports on the attack played it down as a case of "workplace violence."It was revealed by the counter-terror SITE Intelligence Group that Abdulazeez this week uploaded two blog posts about Islam, describing life as "short and bitter" in one, and warning Muslims not to miss "the opportunity to submit to Allah" in the other.
FBI to Investigate Tennessee Shooter's Trip to Jordan-Counterterrorism investigators looking closely at a seven-month trip to Jordan in 2014 by Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez.By Ben Ariel, Canada-First Publish: 7/18/2015, 1:07 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Counterterrorism investigators are looking closely at a trip to Jordan in 2014 by Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, the 24-year-old shooter who conducted two attacks on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tennessee, The Wall Street Journal reports. The investigation will try to determine whether the shooter had contact with any extremists or traveled to other countries from Jordan, people familiar with the investigation told the newspaper.Abdulazeez spent about seven months in Jordan last year, according to one person close to the investigation. The visit was one of a number of trips he took to that country during his life. He also held Jordanian citizenship, officials said.Abdulazeez died in a gunfight with police, shortly after firing a rifle at two military facilities in Chattanooga. Four Marines were killed in the attacks.Law-enforcement and intelligence agencies are now trying to determine if he made connections, or drew inspiration, on that trip to later commit an act of violence once he returned to the U.S., these people said. The FBI has been tracking hundreds of suspected supporters of the terror group Islamic State (ISIS), but Abdulazeez wasn’t on their radar as a potential threat, according to people familiar with the probe.FBI officials on Thursday night said they don't have "anything that directly ties" the attacker Abdulazeez to any foreign terrorist organizations, although experts have said his behavior fits the mold of attacks Islamic State (ISIS) has called for.Officials are also examining two blog posts apparently written on Monday to see if they were written by the suspect, according to The Wall Street Journal. Even if he did write them, according to people close to the investigation, there is nothing suggestive of violence in the posts, and they don’t offer a motive for attacking U.S. military sites.“Brothers and sisters don’t be fooled by your desires, this life is short and bitter and the opportunity to submit to Allah may pass you by,’’ one post said.It was previously revealed on Friday that Abdulazeez's father was investigated several years ago for donating money to an organization possibly connected to a foreign terrorist organization. The father was on a terrorist watch list and even questioned during a trip out of the country, but eventually his name was taken off the terrorist list. The attack on an army site brings to mind the 2009 shooting attack at the Fort Hood army base, when Palestinian American Army Major Nidal Hasan unleashed a deadly shooting rampage, murdering 13 and wounding 32. Hasan admitted to conducted the shooting as an Islamist terror attack. The same base was targeted again in April 2014, with the shooter and three victims killed as well as 14 wounded.(Arutz Sheva’s North American desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York.
