HALIFAX - Air Canada says it was safe for pilots to land a plane in Halifax that crashed early today during a snowstorm.Chief operating officer Klaus Goersch says the pilots flying AC624 circled above the Halifax airport for a period of time but the weather was safe for them to land. The plane, which left Toronto just before 9 p.m. Saturday, landed hard and skidded off a runway. There were 133 passengers and five crew members aboard at the time.Goersch says 25 people were taken to hospital and all but one of them have been released.

Air Canada flight slides off Halifax runway, injuring passengers-ReutersBy By Mark Blinch | Reuters – MAR 29,15-YAHOONEWS

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (Reuters) - An Air Canada plane slid off a runway and suffered heavy damage while landing in the east coast city of Halifax on Sunday, sending more than 20 passengers and crew to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The incident happened shortly after midnight. The airline said in an update on Sunday afternoon that all but one of those admitted to hospitals had now been released."We at Air Canada are greatly relieved that no one was critically injured. Yet we fully appreciate this has been a very unsettling experience," Air Canada Chief Operating Officer Klaus Goersch said in a statement.Air Canada said the Airbus A320 flying from Toronto was carrying 133 passengers and five crew members. The airline did not give the cause of the accident but said it was cooperating fully with investigators. It was snowing heavily at the airport at the time of the accident. Passengers interviewed by local media described a "big flash" before landing and speculated the flight may have struck a power line, but this was not confirmed by the authorities.Peter Spurway, a spokesman for the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, told local media that power was out at the airport around the time of the crash but did not give the cause. Power has since been restored. The federal agency said it was deploying a team to investigate the crash.Earlier this month, a Delta Air Lines Inc jet landing during a snowstorm at New York's LaGuardia Airport also slid off the runway and struck a fence.(Writing by Jeffrey Hodgson; Editing by Gareth Jones)

Ex-girlfriend of Germanwings Flight 4U9525 co-pilot Andreas Lubitz speaks out-CBC – Sat, 28 Mar, 2015-YAHOONEWS
The co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 who apparently chose to crash the jetliner into a mountain last Tuesday had vowed to "do something" that would make people remember him, his former girlfriend has told a German newspaper. The 26-year-old flight attendant, identified by the tabloid Bild as Mary W., was quoted as saying Andreas Lubitz, 27, had "burnout-syndrome" and she had been worried about his increasingly erratic behaviour. The woman said Lubitz would have horrible nightmares and would wake at night screaming, "We're going down."When she heard about the crash in the French Alps — which killed all 150 people on board — she remembered that Lubitz had told her last year: “One day I will do something that will change the whole system, and then all will know my name and remember it.""I never knew what he meant, but now it makes sense," she told Bild. She said they dated for five months last year but she decided they should end the relationship after "it became increasingly clear he had a problem."The woman spoke of his "health problems," described him as being agitated when he spoke of his work, and remembered him saying he didn't think he could realize his dreams of becoming a long-haul pilot and captain. She added, "He knew how to hide what was really going on and how to hide it from other people."Investigators say they have found evidence that Lubitz hid an illness of some kind from the airline, including a torn-up doctor's note that would have kept him off work on the day of the crash. The Wall Street Journal, quoting a "person familiar with the investigation," said Lubitz had been excused from work by his neuropsychologist for a period that included last Tuesday.Prosecutors didn't specify what illness Lubitz may have been suffering from, or say whether it was mental or physical. German media reported that the 27-year-old had suffered from depression. The New York Times and Germany's Bild am Sonntag weekly also reported Saturday that Lubitz had eye problems.German prosecutor Christoph Gumpa said investigators, after searching the co-pilot's apartment in Dusseldorf and his parents home in Montabaur, did not find a suicide note or anything to indicate a religious or political motive for crashing the plane. The Duesseldorf University Hospital on Friday said Lubitz had been a patient there over the past two months and last went in for a "diagnostic evaluation" on March 10. It declined to provide details, citing medical confidentiality, and denied reports it had treated Lubitz for depression.Investigators believe Lubitz locked his captain out of the cockpit during a flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, ignoring the Airbus A320 pilot's frantic efforts to re-enter while the plane continued to descend for eight minutes at full speed.Germanwings said both pilots on the plane had medical clearance, and it had received no sick note for the day of the crash. Medical checkups are done by certified doctors and take place once a year.Parent company Lufthansa is offering immediate financial assistance of up to 50,000 euros ($68,600 Cdn) per passenger to relatives of the crash victims, Reuters reported on Friday. Lubitz's father 'completely broken' -Lubitz's father was distraught with grief over his son's death and over what he may have done, the mayor of a town close to the crash site said Saturday.Bernard Bartolini, the mayor of Prads-Haute-Bleone, said he met the father of Andreas Lubitz at a memorial late Thursday for relatives of those who died in the crash."He was distraught with grief. He was a completely broken man who is carrying all the responsibility of this drama on his back," Bartolini said on BFM-TV. "He lost a loved one, but also because his son is perhaps the (cause) of this tragedy."Lubitz also frequented a gliding club near the crash site as a child with his parents, according to Francis Kefer, a member of the club in the town of Sisteron.Kefer told i-Tele television that Lubitz's family and other members of the gliding club in his hometown of Montabaur came to the region regularly between 1996 and 2003.The crash site is about 50 kilometres away from the Aero-club de Sisteron glider airfield.Officials at the club wouldn't comment Saturday.

News-Germanwings: Terrifying transcripts of doomed plane’s ‘last minutes’
29/03 13:43 CET-euronews

Open the damn door!

These are reportedly the desperate last words of the Germanwings captain as he tried to get back into the locked cockpit of the passenger plane crashed by his co-pilot in the French Alps on Tuesday, killing all 150 people on board. In transcripts from Black Box recordings – reported in the German press as more details emerge about troubled Andreas Lubitz – passengers are also heard screaming as the terrifying scene unfolds.Mass circulation Bild am Sonntag reported that the voice recorder data from the doomed Airbus A320, en route from Barcelona to Duesseldorf, showed the locked-out captain said to his colleague inside the cockpit: “For God’s sake, open the door”.The pilot can then be heard trying to smash the door down with a metal object. Even when he yells: “Open the damn door!” Lubitz does not give an answer as passengers’ screams can be heard in the background just seconds before the fatal crash, the paper said.Bild am Sonntag also reported that investigators found evidence that Lubitz feared losing his eyesight apparently because of a detached retina. However, it was unclear whether this was due to an organic failure or psychosomatic illness, when physical problems are thought to be caused or aggravated by psychological factors such as stress.Another German newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, quoted a senior investigator as saying that Lubitz, 27, “was treated by several neurologists and psychiatrists”, adding that a number of medications had been found in his apartment in the German city of Duesseldorf.German authorities said on Friday they had found torn-up sick notes showing the co-pilot had been suffering from an illness that should have grounded him on the day of the tragedy. Germanwings, the budget airline of the flag carrier Lufthansa, has said he did not submit a sick note at the time.Bild am Sonntag also reported that Lubitz’s girlfriend, a teacher at a secondary school in a small town near Duesseldorf, recently told students that she was expecting a baby.

Open the damn door!’ Germanwings captain’s desperate plea to Lubitz revealed-Published time: March 29, 2015 11:41-Edited time: March 29, 2015 15:31-rt

The captain of the doomed Germanwings plane shouted at his co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, “Open the damn door!” as he desperately tried to return to the cockpit. The harrowing plea has been revealed by the black box recording of the flight’s last minutes."For God's sake, open the door," the captain, Patrick Sondenheimer, shouted at a silent Lubitz, who appears to have locked the captain out of the cockpit before the plane crashed in the French Alps. A transcript from the cockpit recorder was published in the German newspaper Bild on Sunday. The passengers’ screams could also be heard in the moments before the crash. All 150 people aboard were killed.Sondenheimer was also heard trying to smash the door with what sounds like an ax, and yelling at his co-pilot, "Open the damn door!"The transcript also reveals that the captain decided to leave the cockpit as he had not had time to go to the toilet in Barcelona.Lubitz reportedly suffered from vision problems caused by a detached retina, wrote Bild. However, the investigation is unsure if his vision problems were caused by physical or psychological factors. He "was treated by several neurologists and psychiatrists" and a number of pills were found in his apartment, a senior investigator told Germany’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper. Police also found personal notes showing that he suffered from "severe subjective overstress symptoms.”Lubitz’s ex-girlfriend has claimed in an interview with Bild that the co-pilot had been planning to do something to "make everyone remember him.”Maria W., a 26-year-old cabin crew employee whose full name has not been released to the press, described Lubitz as "tormented" and secretive. She recalled that when she heard about the crash, she remembered how Lubitz had said he would do something one day "that would change the system" so "everyone will then know my name and remember me.""I did not know what he meant by that at the time, but now it's clear," Maria said, adding that Lubitz, 27, sometimes woke up at night screaming, "We're going down!" in terror. On Friday, prosecutors in Düsseldorf said that police discovered in Lubitz's home a torn sick note covering the date of the crashed Germanwings flight. They believe he could have been concealing his medical condition from the airline.Bild also reported Friday that Lubitz had spent 18 months undergoing psychiatric treatment. Lubitz allegedly sought psychiatric help for "a bout of serious depression" in 2009 and was still getting assistance from doctors. The newspaper also claimed it had gained access to Lubitz’s profile, indicating the pilot had “psychological problems” and required a "special, exemplary regular medical examination."Düsseldorf University Hospital said in a statement Friday that Lubitz had been undergoing diagnosis there since last month, DPA news agency reported. “Reports telling that Andreas L. [Lubitz] received treatment against depression at our clinic are inaccurate,” a hospital spokeswoman said, adding: “It was diagnostic tests.”Some of Lubitz’s colleagues have described his behaviour as ”normal,” and said he didn’t seem to be suicidal."I got to know him...as a very nice, fun and polite young man," Klaus Radke, head of the local flight club in the town of Montabaur in western Germany, said. He added that Lubitz came across as "a completely normal guy."Lubitz “was a lot of fun, even though he was perhaps sometimes a bit quiet,” Radke said. “He was just another boy like so many others here."German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere has said that Lubitz had no known association with terrorist groups, adding: "We checked everything." Sounds on the recovered voice recorder suggest that Lubitz was alive and breathing until the moment of impact. The unprecedented tragedy has shocked the aviation world. Several airlines have already responded by changing their rules to require a second crew member to be in the cockpit at all times, a rule that is already in effect in the US, but not in Europe.
