Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas

Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

The following is the full text of the comments by Hamas representative Fathi Hammad months before the war, articulating the Hamas ideology to use civilians as human shields for Hamas fighters:"For the Palestinian people death has become an industry, at which women excel and so do all people on this land: the elderly excel, the Jihad fighters excel, and the children excel. Accordingly [Palestinians] created a human shield of women, children, the elderly and the Jihad fighters against the Zionist bombing machine, as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy: 'We desire death as you desire life.'"

2 PETER 3:8
8  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

PSALMS 90:4
4  For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

EVEN CREATION IS ONE THOUSAND YEARS IN JESUS SITE IS ONE DAY.SO ONE DEAD ISRAELI TO ONE THOUSAND DEAD ENEMIES FITS RIGHT IN WITH CREATION.THE WORLD GOES ON FOR 6 THOUSAND YEARS-THEN THE 7 THOUSANDTH YEAR IS JESUS' RULE FROM JERUSALEM FOR ONE THOUSAND YEARS-THEN FOREVER.AND IN WAR IS THE SAME BY CREATION.FOR EVERY ONE DEAD ISRAELI-ONE THOUSAND DEAD ENEMIES WILL OCCUR.

ISAIAH 30:17
17 A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill."

PSALMS 91:7
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

LEVIDICUS 26:7-8
7 You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you.
8 Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.

DEUTERONOMY 32:30
30 How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?

EZEKIEL 39:11-21
11  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(THE ARAB-MUSLIM-RUSSIA BURRIAL SPOT WILL BE EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)
12  And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13  Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14  And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15  And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16  And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17  And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

Hamas Fires at Israel as Cabinet Votes to Extend Ceasefire-Rockets aimed at central Israel late Saturday, making a mockery of an Israeli ceasefire extension. Five soldiers killed in last 24 hours.-By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 7/26/2014, 8:31 PM-IsraelNationalNews
Hamas fired rockets at central Israel around 10 p.m. Saturday, making a mockery of a four-hour Israeli ceasefire extension that began two hours earlier.Meanwhile, Israel's Diplomacy and Security Cabinet has voted to extend the ceasefire by a further 24 hours in response to UN requests, a security source told AFP on condition of anonymity. The truce will end on Sunday night at 9 p.m.Hamas for its part has rejected the ceasefire extension by Israel, demanding Israeli troops withdraw first. No humanitarian ceasefire is valid without Israeli tanks withdrawing from the Gaza Strip and without residents being able to return to their homes and ambulances carrying bodies being able to freely move around in Gaza," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum said in a statement.Hamas's Ezzedine al-Qassam brigades said in three separate statements that they had fired two rockets at Tel Aviv in central Israel, five at Nachal Oz in the south, and another five at the southern city of Ashkelon. Two rockets were reportedly intercepted by Iron Dome anti-missile batteries over Ashkelon. Other rockets had been aimed at the Shaar Hanegev area, near Gaza. No missile seems to have reached Tel Aviv.Terrorists fired mortar shells at Israeli communities near Gaza shortly after 8:00 p.m. Saturday, after Israel approved a four-hour extension of the “humanitarian ceasefire” that both sides honored for 12 hours, from 8:00 a.m. To 8:00 p.m.Gazans used the respite to try and dig out bodies from the rubble of destroyed neighborhoods in Beit Hanoun, Shejaiya and elsewhere. The total death toll in Gaza in 19 days of fighting is reportedly over 1,000.The military has confirmed that five IDF soldiers were killed in several incidents during the last 24 hours. They are First Sergeant Amit Yeori hy”d, 20, of Jerusalem; Lt. Roy Peles , 21, of Tel Aviv, First Sgt. Avraham Grintzvaig, 21, of Petah Tikva, First Sgt. Gal Bason, 21, of Holon, and First Sgt. Guy Boyland, 21, of Genosar.

Op-Ed: Israel, Stop Placating the World’s Opinion-For the world, no matter what Israel does, it is in the wrong.Published: Sunday, July 27, 2014 12:23 AM-Giulio Meotti-IsraelNationalNews

The world doesn’t care if an Israeli tank holds its fire when facing a Hamas terrorist surrounded by children. The world doesn’t care if Israeli pilots are justified in hitting a UN school. The world doesn’t care if a Golani unit finds weapons in a Palestinian kindergarten. For the world, Israel is the scapegoat. Jews are always unjust.Israel can stop placating the world’s opinion: it costs human lives. Jewish lives.A few days ago, I wrote a long article for my newspaper in Italy explaining Hamas’ human shields: hospitals, schools, mosques, cemeteries, United Nations’ sites. The readers’ first comment was: “Damned Jews, cancer of the world”.You cannot placate this madness. It is like a virus. But Israel can stop placating the world’s opinion: it costs human lives. Jewish lives. The entire world is now dispensing sage advice and is urging Israel to end the “cycle of violence” between the warring parties, as if there was a moral equivalence between beheaders and human beings, between mothers who send their own children to a certain death and mothers who shelter their children in safe rooms. Who has the right to preach morality and proper conduct to the people of Israel? Who has earned the political right to sit in judgment upon the Jews and school them in what is right and what is wrong? Is it the United Nations, an entity which has found its unity only in an embarassing attack upon the Jewish State’s right to exist and to defend itself? Is it the Europeans who are now living in the houses once owned by Jews? Should Israel accept moral criticism from France, which capitulated to the Nazis in World War II and hurried to deport its own Jews from Drancy? Israel is subjected to the sermons of the “moderate” Arab leaders. Even the most “moderate” among them have skeletons in their closets.Israel and the Jews must stop bowing at the world’s feet. The State of Israel and the Jewish people exist today not only despite the world’s opinion. But even against it.What person or nation has the credentials to preach morality to Israel? Nobody.

Report: Hamas, Islamic Jihad offer 10-year truce-Published Wednesday 16/07/2014 (updated) 17/07/2014 14:03-(Ma'an News Agency)

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Hamas and Islamic Jihad have submitted a list of 10 demands to Egypt to establish a 10-year truce with Israel, the Hebrew-language daily Maariv reported Wednesday.Maariv quoted a “high-profile” Palestinian source as confirming that Hamas and Islamic Jihad were willing to sign a truce if their 10 conditions were met.The first demand, according to Maariv, is the withdrawal of Israeli military tanks from the border fence area to a distance that enables Gaza farmers to access their fields and tend them freely. In addition, Israel must free all Palestinian prisoners detained after the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the southern West Bank including those who were freed as part of Gilad Shalit prisoner swap. This precondition also includes softening procedures against all prisoners in Israeli custody.A third demand stipulates that Israel ends the crippling siege on the coastal enclave, which means reopening all border crossings and allowing the entry of construction materials and all requirements needed to run the Gaza Strip’s power station. The fourth demand stipulates the opening of an international seaport and international airport in the Gaza Strip to be run and monitored by the United Nations.Hamas and Islamic Jihad also demanded that Israel increases the Gaza fishing zone to 10 nautical miles and allows Gaza fishermen to use large fishing ships.Furthermore, the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip should be monitored by international crews from friendly and Arab countries.Israel must commit to a ceasefire for 10 years which includes closing Gaza airspace to Israeli aircraft, it added. Moreover, Israel must give Gaza residents permission to visit Jerusalem and pray in the al-Aqsa Mosque.Another stipulation demands that Israel abstain from any intervention in Palestinian internal affairs including political arrangements and the reconciliation agreement and all its consequences. Finally, the Gaza industrial zone must be re-established.

Govt source: Israel agrees to four-hour ceasefire extension-33 21-Saturday 26 July 2014 16.58-The death toll has reached over 1,000 people in Gaza, 40 Israeli citizens have been killed-rte news

Israel has agreed to extend by four hours a humanitarian ceasefire agreed in Gaza, an Israeli government source has told Reuters news agency. It was not immediately clear if Hamas had also agreed to prolong the original 12-hour ceasefire.Scores of bodies have been recovered from rubble across Gaza during the initial, 12-hour ceasefire.

Ceasefire comes into effect between Israel-Hamas

The humanitarian truce began at 8am local time in Gaza and many people emerged from shelters to inspect their homes and to buy food.Israel described the truce as a humanitarian window. Many neighbourhoods have been destroyed and bodies are being taken from the rubble across Gaza. The death toll has reached 1,000 people in Gaza after 19 days of fighting. 37 Israeli citizens have been killed.Officials from the US, France, Britain and four other countries were meeting in Paris to discuss ways to help achieve a permanent ceasefire. The German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that a ceasefire would only last if Gaza no longer served as a weapons depot for Hamas. He also urged that living conditions be improved.Israel's military said it would hold fire for 12 hours, but would press on with its search for tunnels used by militants.A spokesman for the Islamist group Hamas said all Palestinian factions would abide by the brief truce.Hamas wants an end to an Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza before agreeing to halt hostilities.

Protests across Ireland

People held protests, vigils and demonstrations across Ireland. The biggest was hosted by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign in Dublin, it was supported by other organisations including the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. The Dublin demonstration started at the Spire and the rally marched to the Israeli Embassy where over 1,500 people listened to Palestinian and Irish speakers. There were protests in Belfast, Cork, Derry, Limerick, Tralee, Waterford and many other places.

Soldier killed by anti-tank missile fired from near UN school, raising IDF toll to 35-Oron Shaul, whose body was not located after a fierce battle in Gaza early Sunday, is pronounced dead; Yair Ashkenazy and Guy Levy killed Friday-By Times of Israel staff July 25, 2014, 7:23 pm Updated: July 25, 2014, 9:32 pm 1

The IDF announced Friday that Sgt. Oron Shaul, previously declared Missing in Action and claimed by Hamas to have been kidnapped, was killed in the Gaza neighborhood of Shejaiya during a bloody battle in which six other IDF troops died as well. The missing soldier’s remains have not been found, but a special IDF ethics committee ruled that sufficient evidence exists to determine that Shaul was killed in the attack.Shaul’s death, along with the deaths of Master Sergeant Yair Ashkenazy and Staff Sergeant Guy Levy killed Friday, raised the IDF death toll since July 8, when Operation Protective Edge began, to 35.Levy was killed by an anti-tank missile fired from near a UN school, the IDF said. Mortar shells and anti-tank missiles were fired “from a structure near an UNRWA school,” the IDF said, killing Levy and injuring several others.IDF Chief Rabbi Brig. Gen. Rafi Peretz notified the soldier’s family that Shaul was designated a fallen soldier “whose place of burial is unknown.” This means a funeral will not be held at this time. Racheli Gazit, speaking on behalf of the family on Friday afternoon, said the family was “still grappling with the news” and would not say that they accepted it. Hitherto, the family had stated that they considered Shaul to be alive. The battle in Shejaiya began overnight Saturday-Sunday. During the early hours Sunday, a 1970s-model armored personnel carrier stalled in one of the neighborhood’s narrow streets, prompting one soldier and an officer to exit the vehicle in order to try and fix the problem, according to one account of the events in the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth. Shortly thereafter, Hamas operatives fired an anti-tank missile at APC. The vehicle then exploded, causing immense damage. The other soldiers in the area fought to reach the APC and either save or evacuate their comrades. Channel 10 reported that the army summoned a drone over the area to provide visuals from above. No Hamas members, the channel said, were seen making contact with the APC or any of the bodies. Nevertheless, Hamas claimed to have kidnapped Shaul, releasing an ID photo of the missing soldier along with his army ID number.Subsequent reports, including on Channel 2, said it was soldiers in a rescue APC, sent to help with the stalled vehicle, who were hit by the missile. After careful forensic work, the army was able to locate six soldiers who were killed in the APC blast, but initial reports indicated that no traces of Shaul, the seventh soldier, were found.Friday’s announcement by the IDF, however, indicated that sufficient information had been gathered to formally designate Shaul as having died.Earlier Friday, an Israeli reservist soldier, Yair Ashkenazy, 36, was killed in combat in the northern Gaza Strip. Ashkenazy is survived by his wife and three children. The IDF was investigating the possibility that Ashkenazy had been killed by friendly fire, Channel 2 reported. On Friday evening, the IDF announced that another soldier, Guy Levy, 21, from Kfar Vradim, had been killed fighting in central Gaza when his tank was hit by an anti-tank missile.

Israel and US openly at odds over Gaza ceasefire terms-Israeli ministers unanimously reject Kerry proposal, and government sources say it leans heavily toward Hamas, wouldn’t enable Israel to keep tackling Hamas tunnels-By Times of Israel staff July 25, 2014, 11:04 pm 83

Israel and its key ally the United States were in open disagreement Friday night, after the Israeli cabinet unanimously rejected a ceasefire offer drawn up by Secretary of State John Kerry to halt 18 days of Israeli-Hamas conflict.Kerry, speaking in Cairo, vowed to keep working on a ceasefire, and said Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “committed” to working to narrow the gaps that were preventing a seven-day humanitarian ceasefire intended to lead to a longer-term deal. He also said Netanyahu had accepted an idea, proposed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, of a 12-hour humanitarian time out. Israeli sources said the idea was under consideration. But Israeli government sources told Army Radio the ceasefire terms proposed by Kerry were “completely unreasonable.” An unnamed senior Israeli government official flatly disputed Kerry’s assertion that his offer was “built on the Egyptian initiative” – which Israel accepted last week and Hamas rejected. In fact, the official was quoted saying, the Kerry offer is not built on the Egyptian proposal and tilts heavily toward Hamas. The Army Radio report highlighted that the US on Monday signed an $11 billion arms deal with Qatar, and noted that Qatar is championing Hamas’s demands in the ceasefire negotiations, and is also alleged by Israel to be financing Hamas’s rocket production, tunnel digging infrastructure, and other elements of its military infrastructure. The radio report also claimed that Ban Ki-moon “is flying around the region on a Qatari plane.”Indications from the lengthy Israeli cabinet meeting that rejected Kerry’s offer Friday are that the ministers were incensed that the terms of the deal would not have enabled Israel to continue to locate and demolish a network of dozens of tunnels that Hamas has dug, up to a mile or more long, from under Gaza residential areas all the way beneath the Israeli border.Six Israeli soldiers have been killed by Hamas gunmen emerging from these tunnels in five incidents in the past 18 days, and Netanyahu said on Sunday that Hamas was planning massive terrorist attacks via the tunnels on Israeli kibbutzim that would have had “catastrophic consequences.”Israel’s relations with Kerry, strained for a long time, were not helped when he was caught on a hot-mic earlier this week apparently sneering at Israel’s insistence that it is trying to tackle Hamas terror targets in Gaza with “pinpoint” accuracy. Comments made by the secretary in the same incident also indicated that Israel had not invited him to embark on this ceasefire mission, presumably because Israel wanted more time to tackle the Hamas tunnels. The Israeli army’s southern commander, who is overseeing Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza, confirmed earlier Friday that he felt the army needed more time, although it had located what it believes are most of the tunnels. The formal text of the ceasefire proposal offered by Kerry and rejected by Israel had not been released as of Friday evening. Earlier, though, The Times of Israel reported on what Arab sources said were its key elements. The Kerry proposal, they said, provides for an immediate halt to hostilities to be followed 48 hours later by the start of five to-seven days of contacts between Israel, Palestinian and Egyptian delegations in Cairo, with the Palestinian delegation including Hamas officials. The talks in Egypt would include discussion of Hamas’s call for the lifting of the so-called siege of the Gaza Strip, and other demands. In his comments on Friday in Cairo, Kerry said that Egypt had indeed offered to bring the “Palestinian factions,” and other interested parties, and Israel, to Cairo for such talks. “We still have some terminology” to work through, Kerry said. “But we are confident that we have a fundamental framework” that can work. The Arab sources said the Kerry terms would provide for all military activity by the sides to halt immediately. On the Palestinian side, this provision was interpreted as meaning that Israel’s activities to find and destroy Hamas’s cross-border tunnels would also immediately be halted. But Israel has reportedly pushed for terms that would enable it to continue tackling the Hamas tunnels after a halt to hostilities. The Arab sources said the discussions in Cairo would cover Hamas demands relating to: opening border crossings between Gaza and Israel; opening the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt; the release of recently rearrested prisoners from the Shalit deal; the release of some 30 convicted terrorists, including Israeli Arabs, who were set to go free under the collapsed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in late March; widening Palestinian fishing rights off the Gaza coast, and the establishment of a Gaza seaport.Netanyahu has said Operation Protective Edge will continue and expand as necessary until sustained calm has been achieved for the people of Israel and Hamas’s terrorist infrastructure has been significantly weakened. Israeli officials have spoken of the need to have Gaza demilitarized, and the EU earlier this week demanded the disarming of Hamas and other Gaza terror groups. Hamas has fired over 2,000 rockets at Israel over the past 18 days. The IDF launched a ground offensive last Thursday that has focused on finding and demolishing the network of dozens of tunnels dug by Hamas under the Israel border.Avi Issacharoff contributed to this report.

Six Palestinians killed in rising West Bank violence-Clashes reported in several hotspots as thousands, encouraged by Hamas, join ‘Day of Rage’ protests against IDF Gaza offensive
By Adiv Sterman July 26, 2014, 12:57 am 3-The Times of israel

Six Palestinians were killed in the West Bank Friday, in a series of clashes and demonstrations hours after Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip and abroad urged Palestinians to launch a Third Intifada against Israel. In the Hawara area, south of the West Bank city of Nablus, a settler fired his weapon in self-defense at a crowd of Palestinians who stoned his car and attacked him and stoned him when he got out, according to Channel 2. An 18-year-old Palestinian, identified later as Khaled Oudeh, was killed in the shooting, according to Palestinian sources.Following the incident, hundreds of Palestinians rioted in the area and clashed with IDF troops, who responded with tear gas and live bullets. A second Palestinian, 22-year-old Tayyib Oudeh, was reported killed in the rioting, while several others were reported injured, according to AFP.In the West Bank village of Beit Ummar, near Hebron, three Palestinian men, including 46-year-old Hashem Abu Marieh and 30-year-old Sultan Yusef, were reportedly shot and killed by IDF troops during violent clashes, according to Palestinians. Finally, a Palestinian was killed after trying to grab a soldier’s weapon during a riot near Al-Arroub, outside Hebron. The man was shot by troops after trying to grab the gun, Israel Radio said.Meanwhile violent demonstrations were also reported late Friday in Taibe, east of Netanya, where rioters hurled rocks at police and burned Israeli flags. On Friday afternoon, a Palestinian man turned himself in to Israeli police after swerving his car into a group of Israelis, hitting and lightly injuring a 17-year-old Israeli girl, at the Etzion Bloc junction in the West Bank, Channel 2 reported. The man claimed he hit the girl by accident as she stood at a hitchhiking point at the junction. Police launched an investigation into the incident. In Friday’s early morning hours, Qatar-based Hamas spokesman Husham Badran, responding to reports of clashes Thursday between thousands of Palestinian protesters and police at the Qalandiya checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah, said the time was now ripe for the Palestinians to rise up, Israel Radio reported.“This is your opportunity,” Badran stated. Two Palestinians were killed by IDF soldiers during the Qalandiya demonstration, reportedly attended by 10,000 people. IDF officials said the two had opened fire on Israeli forces during the clashes. Palestinian health officials reported over 100 Palestinians wounded as well. Two Israeli policemen were lightly injured in the disturbances.Following the demonstration, Hamas official Izat a-Rishk posted a call on Twitter for a revolution against the Israeli people, adding that the blood of Gazans ignites the West Bank. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri later added that the events in Qalandiya prove that the Palestinians are one people and that Gaza cannot be isolated.Since July 8, Israeli soldiers have been engaged in an ongoing military offensive in the Gaza Strip aimed at thwarting Hamas missile attacks and uncovering terror tunnels leading from the Palestinian enclave into Israeli territory. Palestinian Authority officials on Friday called for a “Day of Rage” across the West Bank, in protest at the deaths and of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Hamas and Islamic Jihad called for marches in Ramallah and Hebron, respectively. There were further protests in Jerusalem’s Wadi Joz neighborhood on Friday morning.Riots broke out Thursday in a number of locations in the eastern part of the city as well, including in Ras al-Amoud and Silwan as well as inside the Old City and on the Temple Mount.Several roads in the capital were closed due to the disturbances.Palestinian sources claimed there were tens of thousands at the various demonstrations — the largest such protests in years. Channel 2 also said there had been an upsurge in gunfire at Israeli troops in the West Bank in recent days.Thursday evening was the last night of Ramadan, called Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Power, which is considered one of the most important dates in the month-long festival.Police anticipated unrest and deployed thousands of officers and paramilitary Border Police in East Jerusalem and across the West Bank.

Gaza sides agree to lull but truce efforts stall-Associated Press-By KARIN LAUB and IAN DEITCH -JULY 25,14-YahooNews

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel-Hamas fighting looked headed for escalation after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry failed Friday to broker a weeklong truce as a first step toward a broader deal and Israel's defense minister warned Israel might soon expand its Gaza ground operation "significantly."Hours after the U.S.-led efforts stalled, the two sides agreed to a 12-hour humanitarian cease-fire to begin Saturday. However, the temporary lull was unlikely to change the trajectory of the current hostilities amid ominous signs that the Gaza war is spilling over into the West Bank.In a "Day of Rage," Palestinians across the territory, which had been relatively calm for years, staged protests against Israel's Gaza operation and the rising casualty toll there. In the West Bank, at least six Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire, hospital officials said. The latest diplomatic setbacks, after several days of high-level diplomacy in the region, signaled that both sides are digging in and that the fighting in Gaza is likely to drag on.Israel wants more time to destroy Hamas military tunnels and rocket launching sites in Gaza, while the territory's Hamas rulers want international guarantees that a Gaza border blockade will be lifted before they cease fire. The Israeli military said in a statement that Saturday's 12-hour pause in fighting would start at 8 a.m. But it warned that the military "shall respond if terrorists choose to exploit" the lull to attack Israeli troops "or fire at Israeli civilians." The military also said that "operational activities to locate and neutralize tunnels in the Gaza Strip will continue."A Hamas spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, said earlier Friday that the group had agreed to the 12-hour lull, intended to allow civilians to receive aid and evacuate to safer areas.Civilians on both sides have been hardest hit over the past 18 days.In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes and tank shelling have killed more than 860 Palestinians, wounded more than 5,700, displaced tens of thousands and destroyed hundreds of homes, Palestinian officials said. In dozens of cases, Israeli attacks killed three or more members of the same family, according to U.N. figures, and civilians make up three-quarters of the dead.Gaza militants have fired close to 2,500 rockets at Israel since July 8, exposing most of Israel's population to an indiscriminate threat that has killed three civilians. Thirty-six soldiers have also been killed in battle in Gaza.Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Friday that Israel's military would continue to strike Hamas hard, in order to deter it from firing rockets at Israel in the future."At the end of the operation, Hamas will have to think very hard if it is worth it to taunt us in the future," Yaalon was quoted as telling soldiers manning an Iron Dome anti-missile battery. "You need to be ready for the possibility that very soon we will order the military to significantly broaden ground activity in Gaza.""Hamas is paying a very heavy price and will pay an even heavier price," he said, according to a statement by his office. The warning came shortly after Kerry announced in Cairo that he had been unable to broker a weeklong truce during which both sides were to talk about security arrangements and a possible easing of Gaza's border blockade. For days, Kerry had been moving between the Egyptian capital, the West Bank and Jerusalem, and talking to officials from Qatar, who are in contact with Hamas. More meetings with his counterparts from European Union nations, Turkey and Qatar were scheduled for Saturday in France.Speaking alongside U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and the Egyptian foreign minister, Kerry insisted there was a general agreement on the "concept" of a truce but that both sides had concerns over details of carrying it out."Gaps have been significantly narrowed," he said. "It can be achieved, if we work through some of the issues that are important for the parties."However, the Israeli Security Cabinet rejected Kerry's proposal, according to Israeli media reports. Israel wants to be able to continue destroying tunnels used by Hamas militants to try to infiltrate into Israel and to smuggle weapons. It has so far uncovered 31 tunnels and destroyed half of them.Meanwhile, heavy Israeli shelling was reported in the town of Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip, an area where ground troops are operating. One shell hit near the emergency department of Beit Hanoun hospital, wounding six people, including a foreign national who was not identified further, the Red Crescent said. Two of the wounded were in critical condition.Shells also hit an ambulance in Beit Hanoun, killing a paramedic and wounding two people, the Red Crescent said. Another ambulance driver was killed as he tried to evacuate wounded from the southern town of Bani Suheila, the organization said.As the Gaza fighting dragged on, the West Bank was becoming increasingly restive, with protests erupting Friday across the territory. In the northern village of Hawara, hundreds took part in a protest after emerging from a mosque after Friday prayers, said Mayor Mouin Idmeidi. Hawara is located along a main north-south thoroughfare that is also used by Israeli motorists, and one Israeli driver slowed down as he passed the march and fired at the group, the mayor said.He said four people were wounded and that one of them, a 19-year-old, died at Rafidiyeh Hospital in Nablus of his injuries. After the shooting, clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli troops who opened fire, killing a 22-year-old, Idmeidi said. Health workers at the hospital confirmed the deaths. An Israeli police spokesman, Mickey Rosenfeld, said paramilitary border police opened fire to disperse violent protests at Hawara, and that masked Palestinians threw firebombs. He said he was unaware of a shooting involving an Israeli civilian. In Beit Omar, clashes erupted between Israeli forces and Palestinian stone-throwers. Hebron hospital officials said three Palestinians were killed.Later Friday, the Israeli military said a soldier opened fire and killed a Palestinian protester who attempted to snatch his weapon during clashes in a refugee camp near the city of Hebron. Palestinian police said the man was killed after scuffling with a soldier who had barred him from entering his home before the break of the Ramadan fast.On Thursday, thousands of Palestinians clashes with Israeli forces at a West Bank checkpoint and in east Jerusalem, the largest protests in those areas in several years.____Associated Press writers Mohammed Daraghmeh in the West Bank, Yousur Alhlou in Jerusalem and Edith M. 07/25/2014 - VATICAN INSIDER-Holy Land: The pilgrims' dilemma-Pilgrims are deliberating on whether to go to Jerusalem despite the war in Gaza and the rocket missile attacks on Israel. Responses differ within the Catholic Church-Giorgio Bernardelli

Can one go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem despite the war that is raging on in Gaza and the rocket missiles that are raining down on Israel? Is it too dangerous? And aside from the concerns to do with security and the difficulty of travelling to Israel now that many airlines have cancelled all flights to Tel Aviv, is it right to travel to the Holy land when so many are dying there? Questions like these are the order of the day now in many parishes and dioceses across the world: the Israeli-Palestinian war that has been going on for three weeks now has forced many groups that had planned a pilgrimage to Jerusalem this summer to make a choice: to go or not to go? The responses have been varied. The French Bishops' Conference cancelled the big national student pilgrimage tp the Holy Land which 2200 young people were supposed to set off on round about now. The President of the Bishops' Conference, Georges Pontier, said the decision was taken after the French foreign affairs ministry advised them not to go, also taking into account the size of the group. In addition, it would have been impossible to reach certain Christian communities in the West Bank and access to some of the Holy Places was not guaranteed. The students were, however, encouraged to spend this week praying and expressing their closeness to Christians in the Holy Land: each diocese has proposed specific initiatives. But Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi groups have been setting off on their pilgrimages as planned: yesterday, a group of eighty people concluded a pilgrimage which Mgr. Liberio Andreatta, vice president and CEO of the agency - which is a branch of the Vicariate of Rome - also participated in, in person. This was a way to show that it is possible to travel to Jerusalem right now and the pilgrimage was welcomed in Italy and by the Israeli tourism office. “The various intifadas and wars have never put us off. In fact this is the perfect time to go, also seeing as though the pilgrimage route is very safe, calm and far away from where the war is being fought; so it really inspires dialogue, friendship and offers an opportunity for encounter between the Palestinians and Israelis. Pilgrims are the third people of this land and they cannot miss a moment like this, when two peoples are suffering together,” said Mgr. Andreatta, who has visited the Holy Land numerous times over the past 40 years.Emanuela Compri, who works in the pilgrimage office of the Italian diocese of Vicenza, has just returned from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. She started off in Eilat and passed the Negev desert, just a stone's throw away from Gaza. “Was this foolish? Crazy? An immoral act?” she asks herself. Her response was not so much a “yes” or “no” answer but focused on “how”.“This was not a deaf and blind experience: we heard bomb sirens, we heard missiles go off and from afar we could hear bombs explode in Gaza,” she said. “It was precisely because it was not a deaf or blind experience that she was able to see and feel that what is happening is not affecting the security of all parts of this land but suffering is felt everywhere. Palestinian fear and Israeli fear, Palestinian tears and Israeli tears … It is precisely because there is suffering there that Christians cannot turn their attention and the hearts away.”“All Christians in the Middle East are asking for,” Emanuela Compri adds, “is not to be left alone. They - Iraqis, Palestinians, Syrians- are a minority that is tenatiously hanging on … it is impossible to reach them physically in the areas that have been hit by violence the worst. But it is possible to reach them through the eagerly anticipated Christian experience of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land; an opportunity to pray for peace, justice and forgiveness there. In the very place where the deep roots of our faith lie...”
