“The struggle of the people of Palestine is our struggle” and South Africa has decided to “slow down” and “curtail senior leadership contact” with the Israeli “regime,” South Africa’s International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said on Friday. Already, she said, South Africa’s government ministers do not visit Israel.“Our Palestinian friends have never asked us to disengage with Israel [through cutting diplomatic relations]. They had asked us in formal meetings to not engage with the regime,” Nkoana-Mashabane was quoted by South African website News24 as telling a Congress of South African Trade Unions international relations committee meeting on Friday. The Congress of South African Trade Unions supports a boycott of Israeli products and has in the past accused Israel of practicing apartheid.“Ministers of South Africa do not visit Israel currently. Even the Jewish Board of Deputies that we engage with here, they know why our ministers are not going to Israel,” she added.Nkoana-Mashabane further said that South Africa has ”agreed to slow down and curtail senior leadership contact with that regime until things begin to look better.”“The struggle of the people of Palestine is our struggle,” she declared.South Africa on Friday criticized Israel’s plans, announced on Tuesday, to build at least 5,000 new settlement units including some beyond the security barrier, according to reports.“That arrangement there in Palestine keeps us awake,” Nkoana-Mashabane said.“The last time I looked at the map of Palestine, I could not go to sleep. It is just dots, smaller than those of the homelands, and that broke my heart,”" she said, referring to the bantustans that existed in South Africa during the apartheid era.The meeting was also addressed by a group campaigning for the release of all Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. According to AFP, the campaign began on “October 25 at Robben Island, the former prison where anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years in jail.”South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu threw his support behind the campaign, calling for the “release of imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouthi and other Palestinian political prisoners,” according to News24. ”I am proud to associate myself with the global campaign for the freedom of Marwan Barghouthi and other Palestinian political prisoners,” Tutu said in a statement quoted by the website. Barghouti is serving five life terms in Israel for involvement in five second intifada-era murders.

South Africa has been a harsh critic of Israel, with prominent figures often drawing parallels between between the country’s apartheid era and Israel today, slamming Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians, and voicing support for cultural, economic and educational boycotts of Israel.

In June, the former South African ambassador to Israel accused the Jewish state of practicing apartheid and indicated that it is built on “stolen” land.

Israel is fuming with the White House for confirming that it was the Israeli Air Force that struck a military base near the Syrian port city of Latakia on Wednesday, hitting weaponry that was set to be transferred to Hezbollah.Israel has not acknowledged carrying out the strike, one of half a dozen such attacks widely ascribed to Israel in recent months, but an Obama administration official told CNN on Thursday that Israeli warplanes had indeed attacked the Syrian base, and that the target was “missiles and related equipment” set for delivery to Hezbollah in Lebanon.Israel’s Channel 10 TV on Friday night quoted Israeli officials branding the American leak as “scandalous.” For Israel’s ally to be acting in this way was “unthinkable,” the officials were quoted as saying.A second TV report, on Israel’s Channel 2, said the leak “came directly from the White House,” and noted that “this is not the first time” that the administration has compromised Israel by leaking information on such Israeli Air Force raids on Syrian targets.It said some previous leaks were believed to have come from the Pentagon, and that consideration had been given at one point to establishing a panel to investigate the sources.Channel 2′s military analyst, Roni Daniel, said the Obama administration’s behavior in leaking the information was unfathomable.Daniel noted that by keeping silent on whether it carried out such attacks, Israel was maintaining plausible deniability, so that Syria’s President Bashar Assad did not feel pressured to respond to the attacks.But the US leaks “are pushing Assad closer to the point where he can’t swallow these attacks, and will respond.” This in turn would inevitably draw further Israeli action, Daniel posited, and added bitterly: “Then perhaps the US will clap its hands because it will have started a very major flare-up.”

Channel 2 speculated that the US might have leaked word of Israel’s attack as a warning to Israel to desist from such actions. Alternately, it might be seeking to signal that it was part of the tough policy designed to prevent a flow of sophisticated weaponry to Assad. But these and other possible explanations simply didn’t justify the leak, which the TV report described as “illogical” and “foolish.”Jerusalem’s reported anger with the White House over the leak coincided with efforts by the Administration to assure Israel that it is holding to a tough line on Syria and in the effort to thwart Iran’s nuclear program, and is maintaining its robust military partnership with Israel.On Thursday, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, reiterated America’s commitment to thwarting Iranian nuclear weapons ambitions. “Let me be absolutely clear: President Obama is determined to ensure that the Islamic Republic does not acquire a nuclear weapon,” Power said at the Anti-Defamation League’s centennial conference held Thursday in a Manhattan hotel. Addressing the subject of nuclear negotiations with Iran, she said the Obama administration considers a bad deal worse than no deal and that the administration will not accept a bad deal.Later Thursday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel told the same gathering that the US is testing Iran’s diplomatic intentions but remains “clear-eyed” on Iran’s role as a state-sponsor of terror and exporter of extremism.

Hagel also announced that the US will fast-track delivery of six advanced Osprey helicopter-airplanes to Israel. “Israel will get six V-22s out of the next order to go on the assembly line, and they will be compatible with other [Israeli defense] capabilities,” Hagel said, anticipating delivery in two years time. NBC News said Israel requested that the delivery of the Ospreys be expedited because of threats from Iran and Syria.

Hagel added that “the Israeli and American defense relationship is stronger than ever, and it will continue to strengthen.”Nonetheless, the ADL’s national director Abraham Foxman, who has close ties to the Israeli leadership, told the conference that American wariness of foreign military involvement is making it seem “weak and retreating.” In unusually bitter comments, Foxman declared that, “The combination of America’s unsatisfactory involvement in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, together with the financial crisis at home, have generated a broader opposition to American military involvement overseas.”

Citing among other things the recent congressional resistance to authorizing a strike on Syria, Foxman said: “America is being seen as weak and etreating… The world looks at our choices, looks at our public opinion polls, looks at congressional reactions, looks at the paralysis in Washington on budgeting matters and wonders.”The perception of weakness could harm US efforts to get Iran to end its nuclear push, Foxman warned. “I hope that we get our act together.”Israel has been accused of striking Syrian sites several times in the recent past, including in January and May of this year.The Associated Press contributed to this report.

A senior official in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) denied on Friday reports that peace negotiators Saeb Erekat and Mohammad Shtayyeh had submitted their resignation to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.PLO Executive Committee member Wasel Abu Yousef told the Ma'an news agency that reports of the negotiators resigning were not accurate.On Thursday, sources told Ma'an that Erekat and Shtayyeh had presented their resignation to Abbas, supposedly because of Israel's recent announcement that it would promote 1,500 new homes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, often erroneously described by anti-Israeli media as an "illegal settlement in east Jerusalem".Informed sources had said that the resignation came in protest of Israel's “non-compliance” with the PA’s demands.Fatah Central Committee member Abbas Zaki told Ma'an that an emergency meeting had been called for next Saturday to "discuss the developments."A United States government official said Friday that PA officials informed the U.S. of their commitment to negotiations with Israel for the agreed upon timetable of nine months.The PA has been critical of Israel’s announcement that it plans to build in Ramat Shlomo. On Wednesday, a spokesman for Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeina, said Israel’s move "destroys the peace process and is a message to the international community that Israel is a country that does not respect international law."Plans to build the homes in Ramat Shlomo were made public almost immediately after Israel freed 26 terrorist murderers as a “gesture” to Abbas in order to continue the renewed peace talks.The PA was informed prior to the latest round of talks that Israel will continue to build in areas which even the PA has accepted in previous negotiations will be within Israeli borders. In midst of Syrian war, giant Jesus statue arises

Improbably, under cover of truce, 12-meter figure installed on mountain overlooking ancient pilgrim route to Jerusalem

BEIRUT (AP) — In the midst of a conflict rife with sectarianism, a giant bronze statue of Jesus has gone up on a Syrian mountain, apparently under cover of a truce among three factions in the country’s civil war.

Jesus stands, arms outstretched, on the Cherubim mountain, overlooking a route pilgrims took from Constantinople to Jerusalem in ancient times. The statue is 12.3 meters (40 feet) tall and stands on a base that brings its height to 32 meters (105 feet), organizers of the project estimate.That the statue made it to Syria and went up without incident on Oct. 14 is remarkable. The project took eight years and was set back by the civil war that followed the March 2011 uprising against President Bashar Assad.Christians and other minorities are all targets in the conflict, and the statue’s safety is by no means guaranteed. It stands among villages where some fighters, linked to al-Qaeda, have little sympathy for Christians.So why put up a giant statue of Christ in the midst of such setbacks and so much danger? Because “Jesus would have done it,” organizer Samir al-Ghadban quoted a Christian church leader as telling him.The backers’ success in overcoming the obstacles shows the complexity of civil war, where sometimes despite the atrocities the warring parties can reach short-term truces.Al-Ghadban said that the main armed groups in the area — Syrian government forces, rebels and the local militias of Sednaya, the Christian town near the statue site — halted fire while organizers set up the statue, without providing further details.Rebels and government forces occasionally agree to cease-fires to allow the movement of goods. They typically do not admit to having truces because that would tacitly acknowledge their enemies.It took three days to raise the statue. Photos provided by organizers show it being hauled in two pieces by farm tractors, then lifted into place by a crane. Smaller statues of Adam and Eve stand nearby.The project, called “I Have Come to Save the World,” is run by the London-based St. Paul and St. George Foundation, which Al-Ghadban directs. It was previously named the Gavrilov Foundation, after a Russian businessman, Yuri Gavrilov.Documents filed with Britain’s Charity Commission describe it as supporting “deserving projects in the field of science and animal welfare” in England and Russia, but the commission’s accounts show it spent less than 250 pounds ($400) in the last four years.Al-Ghadban said most of the financing came from private donors, but did not supply further details.Russians have been a driving force behind the project — not surprising given that the Kremlin is embattled Assad’s chief ally, and the Orthodox churches in Russia and Syria have close ties. Al-Ghadban, who spoke to The Associated Press from Moscow, is Syrian-Russian and lives in both countries.

Al-Ghadban said he began the project in 2005, hoping the statue would be an inspiration for Syria’s Christians. He said he was inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s towering Christ the Redeemer statue.

He commissioned an Armenian sculptor, but progress was slow.By 2012, the statue was ready, but Syria was aflame, causing the project’s biggest delay, al-Ghadban said.Majority Sunni Muslims dominate the revolt, and jihadists make up some of the strongest fighting groups. Other Muslim groups along with the 10-percent Christian minority have stood largely with Assad’s government, or remained neutral, sometimes arming themselves to keep hard-line rebels out of their communities.Churches have been vandalized, priests abducted. Last month the extremists overran Maaloula, a Christian-majority town so old that some of its people still speak a language from Jesus’ time.On Tuesday a militant Muslim cleric, Sheik Omar al-Gharba, posted a YouTube video of himself smashing a blue-and-white statue of the Virgin Mary.Al-Ghadban and the project’s most important backer, Gavrilov, weighed canceling it.They consulted Syria’s Greek Orthodox Patriarch John Yaziji. It was he who told them “Jesus would have done it.”They began shipping the statue from Armenia to Lebanon. In August, while it was en route, Gavrilov, 49, suffered a fatal heart attack, al-Ghadban said.Eventually the statue reached Syria.“It was a miracle,” al-Ghadban said. “Nobody who participated in this expected this to succeed.”

Davutoglu: Turkey will never cooperate with Israel against a Muslim country

Turkey on Saturday denied reports of its involvement in an alleged Israeli air strike on a military base in Latakia, Syria on Wednesday, which allegedly targeted “missiles and related equipment” meant for Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.Turkish Foreign Minister Agmet Davutoglu said Saturday: “There is an attempt to give the impression that Turkey has coordinated with Israel. We have issues with Syria, an issue based on a principle. But let me say it clearly: The Turkish government has never cooperated with Israel against any Muslim country, and it never will.”Davutoglu was speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Zarif Saturday in Istanbul.The Turkish FM slammed the reports, describing them as “black propaganda.” “Those [reports] are attempts to cast a shadow on the Syrian people’s rightful struggle and Turkey’s attitude with principles. It is out of the question for us to participate in any common operation,” he was quoted by Turkish daily Hurriyet as saying.On Thursday, a report by Lebanon’s MTV Thursday cited Turkey as being behind the Wednesday attack in Syria, but subsequent reports claimed Turkey merely supplied intelligence to Israel. The Lebanese report cited Israeli officials who allegedly claimed Turkish involvement came in response to the June 2012 interception of a Turkish jet, which Syrian forces shot down. The pilots were subsequently killed.On Thursday, an Obama administration official told CNN it was Israeli warplanes that attacked the airbase in Latakia. An American security official told AP that the attack occurred in the Syrian port city of Latakia and that the target was Russian-made SA-125 missiles.

The Israeli government and military establishment have declined to comment, and on Friday it was reported that the government reacted with fury at the leak by the Americans.On Thursday, one Israeli official told Reuters he thought Israel had carried out the strike, but wasn’t certain. Israel has repeatedly warned that any attempt to transfer to Hezbollah chemical or other game-changing weapons would constitute a “red line” and precipitate military action.Earlier Thursday, on the heels of reports that the airbase had contained advanced, Russian-made, anti-aircraft missiles, al-Arabiya reported that Israel had attacked not one, but two targets in the civil war-torn country.Al-Arabiya’s report said two targets had been hit in Syria on Wednesday night — not just the Latakia air defense base, but a target in Damascus as well. Both targets were said to have contained shipments of Russian SA-8 anti-aircraft missiles meant for Hezbollah, which were reportedly completely destroyed.A map of the Latakia airbase posted online shows three batteries of the Russian-made surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile at the base, outside Snobar Jableh in the country’s coastal Latakia region.

Al-Arabiya quoted opposition forces as saying the base held S-125 missiles.The S-125 is especially effective against maneuverable low- to medium-altitude targets, including aircraft. The Egyptians used such missiles with some success during the War of Attrition and the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and batteries used by Iraq may have knocked down coalition aircraft in the First Gulf War.The system has undergone improvements since then, but countermeasures have also progressed significantly.A massive explosion was reported at the base late Wednesday night, with some reports that it was targeted by missiles fired from the sea. The Syrian news outlet Dam Press, considered loyal to the regime of Bashar Assad, reported that the site was damaged but that there had been no injuries.Earlier on Wednesday, the Lebanese government news agency reported six Israeli aircraft flying through Lebanese airspace along the coast north of Beirut.

The coastal strip of Syria, encompassing the cities of Tartous, Latakia and Baniyas, is part of a predominantly Alawite portion of the country, which remains loyal to the Assad regime in its lengthy campaign against rebels.Israel has been accused of striking Syrian sites in the past, including in January and May this year. Groundbreaking Law to Facilitate Jewish Prayer on Temple Mount

Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) has advanced new laws this morning (Friday) that would enact the establishment of regular prayer hours for Jews visiting the Temple Mount, Yediot Ahronot reports.
According the the new laws, which have already begun to undergo legal processing through the Ministry of Religious Services, daily prayer hours would be set for Jewish groups visiting Judaism's holiest site. Currently, Jews have faced frequent attacks of discrimination against them by Israeli Police during Temple Mount visits, in accordance with a ban on Jewish religious activity there stemming from pressure from Palestinian Arab and Muslim groups. Violators of the ban are apprehended immediately, sometimes facing additional bans preventing them from visiting the Mount at all for a predetermined time period. The laws, if passed, would be a monumental upholding of Israel's official stance of religious freedom. While Israel officially liberated the Mount from Arab capture during the 1967, the law would be the first of its kind to allow both Jewish and Muslim religious activity at the site. Proposals regarding the Temple Mount needs to receive an official stamp of approval from both Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. In the meantime, an investigation is being launched by Bayit Yehudi, along with Chairwoman of the Committee of Interior Affairs MK Miriam Regev (Likud), regarding ways to enact legislation that flies "under the radar" to ensure Jewish prayer rights at the Mount. One suggestion includes declaring the Mount as a legal Jewish Holy Site, thus barring the exclusion of Jewish entry to the site on legal and moral grounds.
The Committee of Interior Affairs is set to discuss the issue in an official meeting this upcoming Monday, where Bayit Yehudi MK Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan will declare that "the situation needs to change on the Temple Mount."

What Are You Going To Do When A Massive EMP Blast Fries The U.S. Electrical Grid?

It is only a matter of time before a massive EMP burst fries the U.S. electrical grid.  What that happens, how are you going to survive?  In the United States today, we are completely and totally dependent on electrical power.  Unless you are Amish (or are a part of a similar community), you probably have absolutely no idea how to survive in a world without electricity.

Unfortunately, our electrical grid is extremely vulnerable at this point.  As you will see below, intelligence officials believe that China and Russia already have “super-EMP weapons”, and a whole host of smaller nations and terrorist groups are believed to be working on developing similar weapons.  But even if the U.S. is never attacked by an EMP weapon, scientists tell us that it is inevitable that a massive solar storm will fry our electrical grid someday.  If an event similar to the solar storm of 1859 happened today, it would be absolutely catastrophic.  Known as “the Carrington Event”, that massive solar storm fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.  At some point we will experience another such solar storm, and some scientists believe that we are already 50 years overdue for another one.  In fact, the earth had a “near miss” just a few months ago.So what will happen if we are hit by a massive EMP blast?  Well, according to a government commission that investigated this issue, approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population could potentially die from starvation, disease and societal chaos within one year.  It would be a disaster unlike anything that we have ever seen before in U.S. history.Frank Gaffney, the president of the Center for Security Policy, is even more pessimistic.  He believes that a single EMP blast could potentially end up killing almost the entire population of the United States…“Within a year of that attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can’t support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity”As a society, we are simply not equipped to function without electricity.  Dr. William Graham was the chairman of the government commission that I mentioned above, and he says that a giant EMP blast could knock the United States back into “the late 1800s” in just a single moment…Life after an EMP attack “would probably be something that you might imagine life to be like around the late 1800s but with several times the population we had in those days, and without the ability of the country to support and sustain all those people,” Graham says. “They wouldn’t have power. Food supplies would be greatly taken out by the lack of transportation, telecommunication, power for refrigeration and so on.”
And remember, this does not require an attack by a foreign power.  A gigantic solar storm could cause an event like this at literally any time.  According to a recent WND article, it is estimated that it would take four to ten years to recover from a direct hit from a massive solar storm…If the earth is hit by a direct solar flare, some of which can be 14 times the size of the earth, scientists from NASA and the National Academy of Sciences say it would cost the nation alone up to $2 trillion in the first year. It could take four to 10 years to recover and affect 90 percent of the U.S. population, meaning widespread starvation and death.
So what would life look like for you and your family if this happened?
Consider the following…
-There would be no heat for your home.
-Water would no longer be pumped into most homes.
-Your computer would not work.
-There would be no Internet.
-Your phones would not work.
-There would be no television.
-There would be no radio.
-ATM machines would be shut down.
-There would be no banking.
-Your debit cards and credit cards would not work.
-Without electricity, gas stations would not be functioning.
-Most people would be unable to do their jobs without electricity and employment would collapse.
-Commerce would be brought to a standstill.
-Hospitals would not be able to function.
-You would quickly start running out of medicine.
-All refrigeration would shut down and frozen foods in our homes and supermarkets would start to go bad.
-Some vehicles would no longer be able to start at all.
-Traffic lights would no longer be working.
-Airplanes would not be able to go anywhere.
-Wall Street would not be able to function at all.
-Government services would collapse.
A lot of these effects would start to be felt immediately.  An article by Mac Slavo detailed some of the things that we could expect to see in the immediate aftermath of a massive EMP blast…The first 24 – 48 hours after such an occurrence will lead to confusion among the general population as traditional news acquisition sources like television, radio and cell phone networks will be non-functional.Within a matter of days, once people realize the power might not be coming back on and grocery store shelves start emptying, the entire system will begin to delve into chaos.Within 30 days a mass die off will have begun as food supplies dwindle, looters and gangs turn to violent extremes, medicine can’t be restocked and water pump stations fail.
So what is the federal government doing to protect us against such a horrific disaster? Absolutely nothing.
In fact, according to a recent WND article, ex-CIA Director Michael Hayden says that the Obama administration has no plans to defend us against an EMP blast…Contrary to the findings of a 2008 commission mandated by Congress to consider a defense against an electromagnetic pulse attack and its effects on the national grid, a retired Air Force general who also headed the National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency says that there isn’t a solution to an EMP attack.Speaking before the Bipartisan Policy Center at a conference on the threats to the U.S. electrical grid, Michael Hayden also said the Obama administration has no plan to defend against an EMP.In fact, Hayden says that “there really aren’t any solutions” to this problem…“I don’t mean to be so flippant, but there really aren’t any solutions to this, so I would just leave it at that,” Hayden said.Of course that is a complete and total lie.  It would take less than a billion dollars to protect the largest transformers in our electrical grid.  But the Obama administration refuses to do it.Since the Obama administration is doing nothing, some state government officials are now considering taking action…At the National Council of State Legislatures last week in Atlanta, a number of lawmakers said they’re preparing legislation similar to a bill introduced in Maine recently did under the leadership of Rep. Andrea Boland.Efforts are under way to press the membership of the NCSL to address the EMP issue, since the federal government has failed to take action to mitigate the potential for a catastrophic event, whether natural or man-made. An EMP event could knock out the U.S. electrical grid system and the critical infrastructures that rely on it.Along with the national electrical grid, other critical infrastructures include telecommunications, banking and financial transactions, oil and natural gas pipelines, transportation, food and water delivery, emergency services and space systems.In short, an EMP event could cause the collapse of society.And without a doubt, our electrical grid represents the “soft underbelly” of U.S. infrastructure.  Attacks on the electrical grid happen all the time, but most of them are not reported by the mainstream media.  The following report of an attack is from a recent Forbes article…More than 10,000 people in Arkansas were dumped into a blackout Sunday following an attack on that state’s electric grid, the FBI said today, the third such attack in recent weeks. In August, a major transmission line in the region, around Cabot, Ark., was deliberately cut.The FBI said that two power poles had been intentionally cut in Lonoke County on Sunday, resulting in the outage.

The following is how the FBI described the attack…In the early morning hours of September 29, 2013, officials with Entergy Arkansas reported a fire at its Keo substation located on Arkansas Highway 165 between Scott and England in Lonoke County. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no reported power outages. Investigation has determined that the fire, which consumed the control house at the substation, was intentionally set. The person or persons responsible for this incident inscribed a message on a metal control panel outside the substation which reads, ‘YOU SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED U.S.’But minor attacks like that are nothing compared to what an EMP weapon could potentially do to our electrical grid.And our strategic enemies have been working on developing such weapons.  The following is a short excerpt from a statement by Dr. Peter Vincent Pry to the United States Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security on March 8th, 2005…Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings describe the basic principles of nuclear weapons designed specifically to generate an enhanced-EMP effect, that they term “Super-EMP” weapons. “Super-EMP” weapons, according to these foreign open source writings, can destroy even the best protected U.S. military and civilian electronic systems.
But it is not just Russia and China that we need to be worried about.According to Pry, North Korea also has such weapons…Pry pointed out that South Korean military intelligence has warned not only their government but also the U.S. that North Korea is developing super-EMP warheads with Russian help.In 2011, Pry pointed out, a military commentator with the People’s Republic of China stated that North Korea has super-EMP warheads. Data from North Korea’s nuclear tests, he said, are consistent with a super-EMP warhead.And it should be noted that it is very possible to create a devastating EMP burst without exploding a nuke high up in the atmosphere.  In fact, the U.S. and other nations have been very busy working on such weapons.  For example, the U.S. military has reportedly developed “a directed electromagnetic pulse gun” that can take out all electronics within a limited area.  This kind of EMP weapon can be fired from a plane, a cruise missile or even a drone.  The following is how this class of weapon was described in a WND article…

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and a second negotiator, Mohammed Ishtayeh, tendered their resignation to PA President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, following Israel’s announcement that it intends to demolish 20 Arab-owned buildings in east Jerusalem, a Palestinian news agency reported.“Knowledgeable sources” told Ma’an news agency that the resignation letters were placed on Abbas’s table, and were pending his decision.The move comes amid reports this week of Israeli approval of 5,000 new housing units in Jerusalem and the West Bank, and three days ahead of a visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss final-status issues as part of a Middle Eastern tour next week.The resignation could not be independently confirmed by The Times of Israel and was not reported in official Palestinian media.On Thursday evening, the PLO’s Executive Committee threatened to take “a number of steps” over the coming days to confront “the settlement onslaught” and prevent the political process from “becoming defunct and incapable of realizing its purpose,” official news agency WAFA reported.It was not immediately clear what house demolitions the negotiators were referring to. Early Tuesday morning, Jerusalem municipality bulldozers destroyed a residential building in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of east Jerusalem that housed nine members of the Shweiki family, Maariv reported. US fast-tracking six Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft to Israel

Israel will be the first U.S. ally to get the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, a star of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday night.Hagel said in an address to the Anti-Defamation League in New York that delivery would be "expedited," meaning "Israel will get six V-22s out of the next order to go on the assembly line, and they will be compatible with other [Israeli defense] capabilities."A senior Pentagon official told NBC News that Israel, facing threats from Iran and Syria and instability in the Sinai peninsula, requested the Ospreys this week.The Pentagon agreed to reallocate the next group of aircraft to come off the production line, which had been previously assigned to the Marines, to meet the order, the official said.Israel could get the unique aircraft — which takes off and lands like a helicopter but flies like a jet — within as early as two years, and "the Marine Corps will recoup its aircraft at a later date," the official said.

While Israel has remained tight-lipped over an alleged strike in Syria, an Obama administration official confirmed on Thursday that Israeli warplanes had in fact attacked an airbase in Latakia on Wednesday. The target was “missiles and related equipment” the Israeli government assessed might be transferred to the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, the report said.A security official told AP that the attack occurred in the Syrian port city of Latakia and that the target was Russian-made SA-125 missiles.The Israeli government and military establishment have declined to comment on the reports, although one Israeli official told Reuters he thought Israel had carried out the strike, but wasn’t certain. Israel has repeatedly warned that any attempt to transfer to Hezbollah chemical or other game-changing weapons would constitute a “red line” and precipitate military action.Earlier Thursday, on the heels of reports that the airbase had contained advanced, Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles, Al-Arabiya reported that Israel had attacked not one, but two targets in the civil war-torn country.Al-Arabiya’s report said two targets had been hit in Syria on Wednesday night – not just the Latakia air defense base, but a target in Damascus as well. Both targets were said to have contained shipments of Russian SA-8 anti-aircraft missiles meant for Hezbollah, which were reportedly completely destroyed.A map of the Latakia airbase posted online shows three batteries of the Russian-made surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile at the base, outside Snobar Jableh in the country’s coastal Latakia region.

The Egyptians used such missiles with some success during the War of Attrition and the 1973 Yom Kippur war, and batteries used by Iraq may have knocked down coalition aircraft in the First Gulf War.The system has undergone improvements since then, but countermeasures have also progressed significantly.A massive explosion was reported at the base late Wednesday night, with some reports that it was targeted by missiles fired from the sea. The Syrian news outlet Dam Press, considered loyal to the regime of Bashar Assad, reported that the site was damaged but that there had been no injuries.Earlier on Wednesday the Lebanese government news agency reported six Israeli aircraft flying through Lebanese airspace along the coast north of Beirut.The coastal strip of Syria, encompassing the cities of Tartous, Latakia and Baniyas, is part of a predominantly Alawite portion of the country which remains loyal to the Assad regime in its lengthy campaign against rebels.Israel has been accused of striking Syrian sites in the past, including in January and May this year. The Israeli ambassadors to Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan — three countries that share a direct border with the Islamic Republic — Kazakhstan and Georgia were reportedly in attendance.The attendees discussed these countries’ reactions to the outcome of the recent presidential elections in Iran, which saw President Hassan Rouhani elected, and their responses to the recently renewed talks between world powers and Iran over its controversial nuclear program, according to the report.The diplomats also addressed ways to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties with the countries, to which Israel assigns special importance.In September, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the foreign minister of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, in Washington. During the voting session which took place on the afternoon of 13 March 2013, an error led to the fourth vote of the day, the fifth of the Conclave - which began with a first scrutiny on the evening of 12 March – being cancelled. Argentinean journalist, Elisabetta Piqué, who writes for Argentinean paper La Nación,  reveals this in a a new book published in Spanish, entitled Francisco, vida y revolución (Francis: Life and revolution).What happened? After the fifth ballot was cast and the ballot box containing the votes of the 115 cardinal electors opened, the ballots were counted as always before being scrutinised and the resulting number was 116. There was one extra ballot. One of the cardinals had mistakenly placed two ballots in the box without realising it: one contained the name of his preferred candidate and the other was blank.The mistake meant the whole voting session had to be cancelled, without the ballots even being scrutinised. If they had, Bergoglio would probably have probably come out on top. It was decided that another vote should be cast immediately. The mishap would not have influenced the cardinals in any way as none of them knew what name (in this case none) was on the extra ballot. On the sixth ballot and after the fifth scrutiny, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires won a clear majority: way above the expected quorum of 77 votes. Then the white smoke billowed out of the Sistine Chapel chimney and Pope Francis greeted the crowds for the first time.

"US intelligence services even spied on Francis"

The NSA claims Italian news magazine Panorama’s allegations that the intelligence agency intercepted papal telephone conversations is false but Nuncio to the US, Carlo Maria Viganò could ask for explanations

Although the Curia’s official reaction has been to pour oil on troubled waters, the Holy See is getting increasingly irritated by what it calls a situation of “unprecedented gravity”.If the claims about the NSA’s eavesdropping prove to be true, especially because the State targeted by the US’s “007” agents is a unique case, it is a centre of faith that defends peaceful co-existence in the world and keeps diplomatic mediation alive even in war-torn nations like Syria. The central government of the Church said it had no knowledge of this “hostile operation” which has been defined as “technically possible”.According to Italian news magazine Panorama, the calls made to and from the small but strategic Holy See feature among the 46 million calls the US intercepted in Italy between 10 December 2012 and 8 January 2013. Meanwhile, a German government and secret service delegation arrived in Washington this morning to meet with their US counterparts. The head of the BND, Germany’s overseas intelligence service, Gerhard Schindler, denied his US colleague James Clapper’s claims that the German embassy apparently also spied on the US. “The German embassy is not carrying out any spying operations that involve Washington,” he assured.Alongside its regular secret services activities, the US has apparently set up a thick network of private spying entities that send information to the NSA, the CIA and the US military. According to German weekly Stern, there are apparently more than 90 such entities, established over a period of many years and their tasks include offering support, computer maintenance and monitoring building security. About thirty of them are directly involved in spying operations. The Holy See also plans to informally make its discontent known to Washington, through the Nuncio to the US, Carlo Maria Viganò and the Assessor to the Secretariat of State, Peter Brian Wells. The US government has informed the United Nations that it “is not spying and neither will it spy on UN communications in the future.”Washington’s reassuring comment only applies to the present and the future. It does not exclude that communications may have been intercepted in the past. Even the discussions held ahead of the Conclave which elected Francis Pope on 13 March may have been recorded.

"We are not aware of anything on this issue and in any case we have no concerns about it," Fr. Federico Lombardi said. But while the Pope’s spokesman appears calm, the news of the intercepted phone calls has in fact sparked irritation and upset in the Vatican. Many have contacted the Vatican Gendarmerie seeking reassurance that no one is listening in on their conversations. Among the phone calls intercepted are those being made to and from the Paul VI residence where cardinal Bergoglio stayed along with other clerics before the Conclave. There is a suspicion that the future Pope’s conversations could also be monitored. Bergoglio has been under US intelligence observation since 2005, Wikileaks reports reveal.The NSA is said to have catalogued the Vatican’s incoming and outgoing telephone calls into four categories: leadership intentions, threats to the financial system, foreign policy objectives and human rights. Relations between the Vatican and the Obama administration have cooled even further after the Vatican’s opposition to the US’s proposed military intervention in Damascus. This risks harming the “detente” between the Catholic Church and the White House after years of misunderstandings over the defence of life and traditional family principles. “If the claims are true, the global fight against terrorism cannot be used as justification,” the Curia warns.

BRUSSELS - National parliaments’ opposed to having an EU-wide prosecutor want the European Commission to rework its flagship proposal, but EU officials say it is likely to go ahead.

Chambers in 11 national parliaments got enough votes to trigger a so-called “yellow card” procedure when they filed their complaints to Brussels earlier this week.They are against the creation of a new European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) because they say national authorities or existing EU bodies, such as the Olaf anti-fraud agency or the EU joint judicial authority, Eurojust, are sufficient.The yellow card has only been triggered once before, on posted workers' rights.It requires the commission to review the proposal and to decide whether to maintain, amend or withdraw the act.It takes at least 18 out of 56 votes in member states' upper and lower houses of parliament.The EPPO card scraped through with 19.An EU official told this website that: "Formally, the number of votes was reached to trigger the yellow card procedure."
But they added: "It is the commission that decides if there has been a yellow card or not and what would be the consequences."The EPPO is designed to investigate fraud committed against the EU budget in member states, which is estimated to sap EU funds of at least €500 million annually.It is said to have broad support in the European Parliament and among EU justice and home affairs ministers.The German Bundestag, the Polish and Portuguese parliaments, and the Romanian Senate have also written letters of support to the commission.And despite the yellow card, some EU sources predicted that EPPO will sooner or later be launched using the EU's "enhanced co-operation" procedure by nine member states or more.

MPs make their case

For his part, Ard van der Steur, an MP from the liberal VDD party in the Dutch parliament, told this website the yellow card must be respected.“Any suggestion by the European Commission that there is no yellow card is ridiculous,” he said.“The yellow card is in place and now it is up to the European Commission to see what they are going to do about it," he added.Van der Steur, who sits on the security and justice committee, said the VDD is not convinced the proposal will have any impact on the fraud.He is also concerned it would breach the sovereign rights of member states to prosecute such crimes.He suggested the EU stops sending money to abusive member states instead.“The only way in which we will be able to fight against fraud against European subsidies is by stopping to subsidise member states that do not do enough against fraud,” he said.
An MP from the Center Party in Sweden, Johan Linander, noted that Swedish MPs want the EU to expand Eurojust and Olaf instead of creating EPPO.“It would be better for Olaf and Eurojust to give stronger help [to national authorities], but not to take over prosecuting procedures in the countries,” he said.
