Almost 8,500 deer across Michigan have died from EHD according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.EHD is a disease that causes deer to suffer a high fever and internal bleeding. The DNR says a small fly known as a midge bites the deer transferring the disease.Officials say nearly half of the deer that have died from EHD have been found in Ionia County. Just two days into bow hunting season and many are talking about the problem.Steve Hayes, a manager at Bob's Gun and Tackle Shop in Barry County, says people are not putting away their bows just yet."Our
customers are concerned, they are also concerned sportsman too. They're
deciding if they are going to back off on the number of deer they are
going to shoot this year, but what we are seeing so far is most people
are still interested in going out and doing some deer hunting," said

The report comes from the Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor, a unit of the Middle East Media Research Center.The organization, which monitors Middle East media, said the comments
were made by Muhib Ru’yat al-Rahman, a senior writer of a leading
jihadi forum called Shumoukh al-Islam.He suggested that Muslims living in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands
and the U.S. kill Westerners who criticize Islam and display their
decapitated heads along roads.“While expressing respect for those calling to boycott European and
American products over the release of the film ‘Innocence of Muslims,’
which negatively depicts Muhammad, Muhib insists that the best way to

A prominent leader of Ramle's Muslim community was
found murdered inside a local mosque in the city on Thursday, Shfela
Subdistrict police confirmed.Muhammed Taji, 80, was the head of the local "Waqf", and supervised the local Muslim sites and holy places in the city.Police did not say how he was killed, but he was reportedly found with stab wounds in his upper body.Because
of the highly-sensitive nature of the incident, police have been
hesitant to divulge details, and have deployed special YASSAM patrol
officers to keep the peace in the mixed Arab-Jewish city.

Following the conclusion of
Friday prayers at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, hundreds of Arabs threw
stones at security guards in the area. Police charged through the
Mughrabi Gate in the Old City and fired stun grenades to disperse the
angry mob.Unconfirmed Palestinian reports suggested that several people were lightly injured.Police officials, having restored calm, said that they would arrest some of the stone throwers in the coming days.Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites of
Israel Shmuel Rabinovitch expressed shock following Friday’s violent
demonstration, assessing that it was meant to prevent Jewish worshippers
from praying in the area during Sukkot. He said that it was up to the
police to arrest those who “wish to harm the delicate fabric of the holy
sites in the Old City, and to harass worshippers.”Rabbi Rabinovitch called on the public to continue observing the holiday at the Western Wall.On Thursday, a confrontation at the Temple
Mount plaza led to six arrests as a group of Muslim worshipers
threatened Jewish visitors to the site.
According to a police spokesperson, about 30 Muslims began chanting “Allahu Akbar”
(God is great) and tried to attack a group of Jews who were visiting
the site. Police broke up the altercation, and arrested five Arabs and
one Jew.The Temple Mount, holy to both Jews and
Muslims, is closely monitored in order to defuse potential tensions

BRUSSELS - MEPs defied calls by
national governments to rein in EU budget spending on Thursday (4
October), instead restoring most of the €138 billion settlement proposed
by the European Commission for the 2013 budget.The European Commission’s budget proposal had called for a €9 billion
increase on the 2012 budget, equivalent to an additional 6.8 percent.Goran Farm, the Swedish deputy who leads for the Socialist group on
the Budget committee, described the parliament’s position as “very
modest, with a clear focus on jobs and growth.”Member states had agreed to a 2.8 percent increase but the EU’s seven
net-contributing countries, which include Germany, France and the UK,
insist that they will not cede more ground at a time when governments
are imposing national austerity plans. Critics of the council position
say that governments are trying to block funding to pay for projects
they have already agreed to.Helga Truepel, the Green group’s spokesperson, said the commission’s
increase was to cover payments already agreed by governments. “Council
prefers to keep the level of payments under the EU budget artificially
low while knowing very well that the commission is currently unable to
honour its financial obligations,” she said.
For his part, Richard Ashworth, spokesman for the British
conservative dominated ECR group, accused the committee of adopting an
“Oliver Twist mentality” and backing “an inflation-busting increase that
those who pay the EU’s bills are unable and unwilling to pay.”Under the Lisbon Treaty, parliament enjoys equal power with
governments on the adoption of the EU budget which must be no higher
than 1.23 percent of GDP.
The vote by the budget committee comes after the commission revealed
that it would table a supplementary budget to plug an estimated €10
billion hole to ensure that payments under programmes such as the
European Social Fund and Erasmus scheme could continue to be made.While negotiations on the next seven year budget framework starting
in 2014 remains deadlocked, a number of EU funding programmes are on the
brink of insolvency.Socialist group leader Hannes Swoboda accused governments of
“blackmailing successful programmes” with the immediate future of the
EU’s Erasmus student exchange programme affected by the budget gridlock.Although the Commission has sought to play down the prospect of
students not receiving their grants, the European Students’ Union (ESU)
said that failure to reach a budget settlement could leave students in
the 2012-13 semester empty-handed.ESU chair Karina Ufert urged the EU executive to “solve the current
financial shortcomings of the European Social Fund by using money from
underspent EU funds.” Over 2 million students have used the Erasmus

BRUSSELS - Nuclear power plants across
most of the EU require immediate upgrades to ensure their safety in face
of cataclysmic events, said the European Commission on Thursday (4
October).EU energy commissioner Gunther Oettinger told reporters in Brussels
that safety standards on the whole were satisfactory, but noted "that
nearly everywhere there is a major potential for improvement.""We certainly have not come to the end of the road yet," he added.The comments come after media last week obtained a leaked draft an EU
paper on nuclear stress tests which outlines, country by country, the
safety standards at the 145 reactors in the EU.The study was an 18-month, three-stage endeavour which looked at
nuclear power plants in 15 member states plus Ukraine and Switzerland.Nuclear operators carried out the initial self-assessment and their reports were then scrutinised by national regulators.The final reporting stage involved a peer-review assessment by
experts from both nuclear and non-nuclear states organised by the
European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (Ensreg), a group of senior
officials from the national nuclear regulatory authorities from all 27
member states.The commission and peer review teams also conducted on site inspections on 54 of the reactors.“The conclusions are based exclusively on the technical experts by
Ensreg and ourselves. There was absolutely no political influence,” said
Oettinger.The report found the risk calculation in the event of an earthquake
falls short among 54 reactors while 62 fail in the event of flooding.Safety equipment is improperly stored among 81 reactors and 24 have
no backup emergency control room should the main control room become
contaminated or inaccessible.On-site seismic instruments are required or need upgrading at 121 reactors.Thirty-four reactors, located respectively in Belgium, the Czech
Republic, Ukraine, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom have
no containment filtered venting systems in case of accident.
Ensreg described implementing the integrity of containment units as
"urgent." Water-cooled reactors, noted the group, require specialised
equipment to prevent hydrogen explosions and containment overpressure.
"The Fukushima disaster highlighted once again the importance of the
containment function, which is critical, as the last barrier to protect
the people and the environment against radioactive releases resulting
from a nuclear accident," said Ensreg in a report released in July.Costs estimates to retrofit the reactors and bring them up to the
International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA's) safety standards range
from €10 billion to €25 billion, said the commission.Oettinger pointed out that some of the recommendations to retro-fit
power plants had been made decades ago, following the Chernobyl and
Three-mile island nuclear catastrophes, but never implemented."Measures should be taken that were possible decades ago," he noted.The commission now wants member states to draw up national actions
plans with timetables to implement the recommendations before the end of
the year.Greenpeace said the EU stress tests fail to consider terrorists
attacks, the age of the plants, and emergency plans offsite that
included evacuating nearby populations.
"They ignored the ageing of plants which is actually a major factor
in how reliable nuclear plants are," said Jack Hunter, a spokesperson at
Greenpeace office in Brussels.He noted that Belgium recently shut down two 40-year old reactors
because of recently discovered cracks in their reactor vessels. The
cracks were found months after the nuclear stress tests had been
performed."This was missed entirely [by the nuclear stress tests], basically
because they were looking at it on paper. It’s a known issue that
radiation accelerates fatigue of things," said Hunter.For its part, the commission said the risk of terrorist attacks was not assessed because it falls outside its mandate.The task was instead undertaken by an Ad Hoc Group on Nuclear
Security (AHGNS) set up in July 2011 by the Council to deal with the
security of nuclear power plants.
AHGNS concluded its evaluation with a report issued in June that outlined a list of "32 good practices."
The Brussels-executive along with Ensreg will also launch an initial study to assess member state off-site safety plans.Meanwhile, Oettinger said he wants to explore setting up a draft
legislation on nuclear insurance and liability in case of disaster.The commission wants to conduct a market analysis with insurance
companies and will make a proposal next year. The additional costs,
noted Oettinger, would be passed onto the consumer.The commission will also review the EU nuclear safety directive in February.

Constrained from a substantial military incursion into Syria by US
President Barack Obama’s veto and Saudi and Qatari refusals to help pay
for it, Turkey’s government and military decided to make do with carving
out a buffer strip 10 kilometers deep into Syria by continuous

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has asked the
United States to impose an immediate “no fly zone” over areas of Syria
in the aftermath of a mortar attack which killed five Turkish civilians,
according to a report by Israeli intelligence outfit DebkaFile.
Following the attack, which evidence suggests was
actually carried out by FSA rebels and not Syrian forces, Erdogan “Asked
Washington….whether the Syrian attack would serve as the pretext for
imposing a no-fly zone over northern and central Syria with US Air Force
participation,” according to the report.Obama administration officials flatly refused Erdogan’s
request, citing recent intelligence which suggests that Syrian President
Bashar Assad will not be able to hold on to power for any longer than
six months.As we saw with Libya, a “no fly zone” is merely a euphemism for aerial bombardment and aggressive regime change.
Having been denied the no fly zone, Turkey responded by
using artillery barrages to carve out a 10 kilometer deep buffer strip
inside Syria, targeting military bases and outposts.Although Washington refused to back a no fly zone, they
did give the green light for Turkey to launch its own attacks inside
Syrian territory, a move that was rubber stamped by the Turkish
parliament earlier today. The buffer zone will allow opposition
fighters, many of whom are Al-Qaeda terrorists, to more easily acquire weapons to conduct terrorist bombings in Aleppo and Damascus.Despite
the fact that Turkey has authorized and is conducting military strikes
inside Syria and killing Syrian troops, not to mention having headquartered, trained, funded and armed militants to carry out terrorist attacks inside Syria, Turkey’s political leaders are still simultaneously claiming they are not at war with Syria.While the United Nations has condemned Syria for an
attack that in all likelihood wasn’t even carried out by Syrian forces,
the global body has remained silent on Turkey’s hostile response, an act
of war that has killed “a large number of Syrian soldiers.”Although Turkey claims Syria has “apologized” for
yesterday’s mortar attack, circumstantial evidence strongly suggests it

Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor said on Thursday that a
deadly Syrian mortar strike on a Turkish town had to be considered an
attack on a member of the NATO alliance.“One has to say that according to the NATO treaty, it was an attack on a member of NATO, and that means France,” Al Arabiya quoted Meridor as having told reporters during a visit to Paris. He was referring to France’s membership of NATO.Meridor said he did not want to go into details about the incident but said the deaths in Syria had to end.“Syria is in a horrible situation, a civil war. Each day men, women
and children are being killed and it must be stopped,” Meridor said
after a meeting with France’s foreign and defense ministers.
“We are in a process that isn’t finished. We don’t see the end for now,” he added, according to Al Arabiya.
Meridor made the remarks as the Turkish parliament authorized cross-border military action
into Syria, if deemed necessary by the government. The mandate, valid
for one year, was passed by 320 votes in the 550-seat Turkish
parliament.In a news conference on Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey would never want to start a war and parliament had authorized foreign deployment of troops as a deterrent after the fatal Syrian shelling of southeast Turkey.“We could never be interested in something like starting a war,”
Erdogan told reporters at a news conference, adding, “The Turkish
Republic is a state capable of defending its citizens and borders.
Nobody should try and test our determination on this subject.”During the news conference, Erdogan lashed out at Syria over increasingly growing
number of attacks on Turkey as the violence escalates on border towns
between Assad forces and opposition fighters and said these attacks
can’t be an accident.Meridor, meanwhile, address the alliance between Syria, Iran and
Hizbullah, saying, “The alliance with Iran is extremely worrying (for
us). Iran on one side, Hizbullah on the other, with Syria in the middle.
For us, it’s very important that this unholy alliance is broken.”He added, “If the Assad regime were to fall, it would be a vital strike on Iran.”Syria has admitted it
has chemical weapons and has threatened to use them if attacked by
external forces. It claimed it will not use these weapons on rebels
fighting to oust Assad. Israel has expressed concerns that should
Assad’s regime fall, the chemical weapons could fall into the hands of
Hizbullah.Recent reports from Syria indicated that Assad has transferred a battery of advanced missiles to the al-Masna border crossing, which is the central route used to transfer equipment and
weapons to Hizbullah. Members of the Syrian opposition said that one of
two major chemical arsenals of the Syrian regime is located near that
border crossing.U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last week that the Syrian regime has moved some chemical weapons to safeguard the material as it wages war against rebel forces, but the main storage sites for its arsenal remain secure.

determined to force on Iran the fate suffered by Iraq – more than a
million killed and its civilian infrastructure decimated – and implement
the globalist plan of balkanization and order out of chaos realized
through never-ending sectarian and religious violence.Evidence of the covert and not so covert war against Iran and other enemies in the Middle East abounds, as we note below:“As a global-macro analyst, I am frequently asked if war with Iran will come and, if so, when,” writes Jim Rickards, a Wall Street economist and investment banker, wrote in February.

– yet. What the U.S. and Israel are now waging with Iran is what
experts call unrestricted warfare. This is warfare that consists of

• The United States has spent millions funding militant ethnic
separatist groups to cripple Iran. The CIA has worked closely with
Kurds, Azeris, Ahwazi Arabs, and the Baluchis. “The latest attacks
inside Iran fall in line with US efforts to supply and train Iran’s
ethnic minorities to destabilize the Iranian regime,” Fred Burton, a
former US state department counter-terrorism agent, admitted.The support includes funding Jundallah, a Sunni and Baluchi group with links to al-Qaeda.“The operations are controversial because they involve dealing with
movements that resort to terrorist methods in pursuit of their
grievances against the Iranian regime,” the Telegraph reported in February, 2007, during the Bush administration.
• In 2008, a story by journalist Seymour Hersh
appearing in the July 7, 2008 issue of The New Yorker reported U.S.
covert action plans against Iran involved extensive activity by the CIA,
DIA and Special Forces.
• Israel’s Mossad and MEK have collaborated on terror attacks inside
Iran and have worked together on assassinating Iran’s nuclear
scientists. The MEK, short for Mujahideen e-Khalq, a violent Iranian
militant group, is listed by the State Department as a terrorist
organization, although Bush-era neocons have worked to change this
designation. MEK claims it has killed 40,000 Iranians who support the government. The CIA has trained the group at a little-known base in Nevada.
• The war waged inside Iran continues under Obama. In April, Iran arrested
a group of Israel-backed mercenary terrorists. In November, officials
in the U.S. admitted the CIA is active inside Iran and stealth drones
have made hundreds of trips into Iran, according to the Washinton Post.
• Israel has hinted it was behind a devastating explosion at a
military base near Iran’s capital of Tehran in November. According to
blogger Richard Silverstein, an Israeli source with extensive senior
political and military experience provided an exclusive report that the
explosion that killed 40 people was the work of the Mossad in collaboration with the MEK.
• The United States and the European Union have engaged in
coordinated economic warfare against Iran and its national currency, the
rial. “Iran’s rial plunged against the U.S. dollar in open-market trade
on Monday, taking its loss in value over the past week to more than a
quarter in further evidence that Western sanctions are shattering the
economy,” Reuters
reported last week. The Iranian currency has experienced considerable
devaluation since banking sanctions were placed on the country.
• Syria and its Shiite ruling elite are also under attack. The New York Times and the establishment media admit that the Free Syria Army is a CIA proxy paramilitary group. In August, “President Barack Obama signed a secret order authorizing
the CIA to aid Syrian rebels in attempting to overthrow Bashar
Al-Assad. However, the order stopped short of allowing the CIA to
provide lethal weapons,” Paul Joseph Watson writes for Infowars.com.
• A massacre in Houla, Syria, in May was the work of the FSA,
according to eye witnesses. Despite evidence to the contrary, the
establishment media continued to report the massacre was the work of
Assad’s military. The FSA and its al-Qaeda affiliates stand accused of
other war crimes and atrocities, activity routinely covered up or dismissed by the corporate media.
• In September, we reported
on Turkey’s efforts to support the FSA and allow it to conduct military
operations from its territory. Turkey is now poised to expand the war
against its neighbor following the death of five civilians inside Turkey
from a Syrian mortar attack.“Turkey’s Parliament approved a motion Thursday that authorizes further military action against Syria,” the New York Times
reports. The attack and Turkey’s response will be used by the United
States and NATO to impose a no-fly zone over Syria similar to the one
established in Libya.The United States expressed “outrage” at the deadly shelling of a Turkish border village from inside Syria, according to the Christian Science Monitor,

shortages by October 7 as promised.The image of the bespectacled civil engineer as Egypt's
"accidental president", forced into the election by the
disqualification of the Muslim Brotherhood's preferred choice, has faded
as the self-imposed deadline approaches.Major tests have
included managing the aftermath of violent protests at the U.S. embassy
in September triggered by a film that denigrated Islam. Diplomats felt
his response was slow, but it was apparently effective - damage to ties
with Egypt's biggest benefactor was minimal while Mursi earned credibility at home for appearing sensitive to popular anger.Mursi has also
mostly avoided getting bogged down in contentious issues such as the
role Islamic law will play in the government
and laws of post-Mubarak Egypt. That debate, which pitches
secular-minded Egyptians against Islamists, is going on within the body
writing a new constitution.But Mursi's
successes have often been overshadowed in the Egyptian media by domestic
problems, including industrial action that has served as a reminder of
the deep economic problems that fuelled the uprising against predecessor
President Hosni Mubarak."The expectations that he would deal with all
injustices quickly created an atmosphere of hopes that are very high and
unrealistic," said Hassan Abu Taleb, a political consultant at the
Al-Ahram Centre for Strategic Studies.Meeting those expectations could prove crucial to the Brotherhood's performance in a parliamentary election expected by early next year or sooner.But there are no quick fixes in a nation with a
sprawling bureaucracy riddled with corruption and health and education
systems in need of overhaul. Egypt is ranked 101 out of 169 countries in
the UNDP Human Development Index.Two-fifths of the 83 million population live around the
poverty line and depend on subsidies that are straining the treasury;
one of Mursi's first moves to was to seek a $4.8 billion IMF loan to
support state finances.Easing Cairo's traffic was always a tall order, for
example, and not helped by the fact that public transport workers were
among those to go on strike."We voted for him on the basis that he would restore
our rights," said Ibrahim Awadallah, seeking relief from a state loan he
grumbled taxi drivers were forced to take on to finance their new white
cabs. "It's time for him to meet his promises."
'NO REASON FOR DELAY'
Doctors in the run-down public health system are the
latest workers to go on strike. Their demands include a pay rise in a
sector where a graduate doctor can earn as little as 200 Egyptian pounds
($30) a month. "We see no reason for delay," said Sameh Abdel Azeem,
one of the strike organizers.According to the online "Morsi Meter", on day 97 the
new president had achieved just four of 64 pre-election promises he said
would be delivered on in his first 100 days in power.Brotherhood politicians say the assessment is unfair.
Even some of Mursi's opponents say there has been a noticeable but
hard-to-measure improvement in law and order, for example.Mursi's government
has been trying to focus on the long term, seeking investment for
mega-projects such as the Suez Canal corridor - aimed at increasing
income from the waterway by turning it into a logistics and services
hub."There are improvements, even if to a small degree. But
the volume of the administrative corruption and the obstacles are
greater than anyone can imagine," said Walid Abdelghaffar, an engineer
and member of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party recruited by
the government to coordinate the canal plan.Economists say the climate for such investment has
improved since Mubarak-era generals who positioned themselves as a rival
source of authority to Mursi were neutralized.Even Mursi's critics were impressed by the speed with
which he was able to sideline Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Mubarak's
defense minister for two decades and head of the Supreme Council of the
Armed Forces that pushed him aside in February, 2011.Tantawi and other top generals were sent into
retirement in a surprise decree by Mursi just six weeks into his term.Mursi has also injected new energy into Egypt's foreign
policy, jetting off to Addis Ababa, Beijing, Tehran, New York and
Ankara while pursuing what he has described as a more "balanced"
approach to diplomacy. Many Egyptians had viewed Mubarak as a lackey of
Western or U.S. policy.
'LITTLE BIT SLOW'
He has engaged the Shi'ite Islamist government in
Tehran in an effort to end the civil war in Syria, a milestone in
relations between states which broke ties after Iran's 1979 revolution.
He has offered reassurance to Israel that its peace treaty is safe,
while publicly keeping its government at arms length, and deepened ties
with Turkish Islamists.Things have gone less smoothly with the United States,
which gives $1.5 billion in military aid and other support each year.
Congress has put a hold on $450 million of aid to help the new
government, underlining a degree of unease in Washington about a
relationship that has been a cornerstone of U.S. Mideast policy.The protests outside the U.S. embassy on September 11
did not help. Police failed to stop the demonstrators from scaling the
embassy walls and tearing down the American flag."As we understand it, he is someone who likes to
deliberate, to take his time," said one Western diplomat in Cairo,
speaking on condition of anonymity to allow for a frank assessment of
the attack."The leadership here, unlike Mubarak, has to take
public sentiment into account. But it may have been they underestimated
what had happened," said the diplomat.Mursi's learning curve is likely to stay steep for some time.Having promised to
be a president for all, one of the measures of his success will be
whether he opts to address the concerns of secular-minded Egyptians
alarmed at the role of religion in the constitutional debate, said Hassan Nafaa, a professor of political science at Cairo University.Prominent non-Islamist politicians including Mohamed
ElBaradei are alarmed at elements of the constitution being written by a
body which they complain is dominated by Islamists. They say they will
hold Mursi responsible for achieving a "balanced" constitution.
"It is not clear
right now whether he has the willingness or the ability to govern
through a national consensus rather than ruling as a representative of
the Muslim Brotherhood," Nafaa said. "The real test will be the coming

BEIJING (AP) — All 18 elementary school students
buried in a landslide were confirmed dead Friday, while one other
person also died after a hillside collapsed and smothered part of a
village in mountainous southwestern China.The Tiantou Elementary School was buried Thursday when the hillside collapsed in Zhenhe, a village in Yunnan province, the Yiliang County government said on its website.All 18 students who were buried in the school were confirmed dead, the government said. The official Xinhua News Agency said the body of a 19th victim was found Friday. It gave no details, but the county government said earlier that a person was missing from a house that had collapsed.The government also said that a person injured in the landslide was hospitalized.The
landslide dammed a river, causing its water to pool 15 meters (45 feet)
across and 7 meters (21 feet) deep around the buried area, hampering
rescue efforts and forcing the evacuation of 800 other people, the
government said. Rescue teams removed the blockage and the water was
subsiding.
While officials
have yet to give a cause for the landslide, that part of Yunnan province
has been lashed by rain and is prone to earthquakes. A series of quakes
last month left 81 people dead and devastated parts of Yiliang county, which are still recovering.Thursday was a holiday across China,
but the students who were killed had been attending school to make up
for days missed after the quake, Yiliang officials said. Xinhua said
their school was damaged in the quake and they were sent to Tiantou
temporarily.

NEW YORK (AP) — The potential scope of the meningitis outbreak that has killed at least five people widened dramatically Thursday as health officials warned that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of patients who got steroid back injections in 23 states could be at risk.Clinics and medical centers rushed to contact patients who may have received the apparently fungus-contaminated shots. And the Food and Drug Administration urged doctors not to use any products at all from the Massachusetts pharmacy that supplied the suspect steroid solution.It is not clear how many patients received tainted injections, or even whether everyone who got one will get sick.So far, 35 people in six states — Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina and Indiana — have contracted fungal meningitis,
and five of them have died, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. All had received steroid shots for back pain, a
highly common treatment.In an alarming indication the outbreak
could get a lot bigger, Massachusetts health officials said the pharmacy
involved, the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., has
recalled three lots consisting of a total of 17,676 single-dose vials of
the steroid, preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate.
An
unknown number of those vials reached 75 clinics and other facilities in
23 states between July and September, federal health officials said.
Several hundred of the vials, maybe more, have been returned unused, one
Massachusetts official said.But many other vials were used. At
one clinic in Evansville, Ind., more than 500 patients got shots from
the suspect lots, officials said. At two clinics in Tennessee, more than
900 patients — perhaps many more — did.The investigation began
about two weeks ago after a case was diagnosed in Tennessee. The time
from infection to onset of symptoms is anywhere from a few days to a
month, so the number of people stricken could rise.Investigators this week found contamination in a sealed vial of the steroid at the New England company, according to FDA officials. Tests are under way to determine if it is the same fungus blamed in the outbreak.The company has shut down operations and said it is working with regulators to identify the source of the infection."Out
of an abundance of caution, we advise all health care practitioners not
to use any product" from the company, said Ilisa Bernstein, director of
compliance for the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.Tennessee has by far the most cases with 25, including three deaths. Deaths have also been reported in Virginia and Maryland.Meningitis
is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms
include severe headache, nausea, dizziness and fever.The type of
fungal meningitis involved is not contagious like the more common
forms. It is caused by a fungus often found in leaf mold and is treated
with high-dose antifungal medications, usually given intravenously in a
hospital.Robert Cherry, 71, a patient who received a steroid shot
at a clinic in Berlin, Md., about a month ago, went back Thursday
morning after hearing it had received some of the tainted medicine.
"So
far, I haven't had any symptoms ... but I just wanted to double check
with them," Cherry said. "They told me to check my temperature and if I
have any symptoms, I should report straight to the emergency room, and
that's what I'll do."The New England company is what is known as a
compounding pharmacy. These pharmacies custom-mix solutions, creams and
other medications in doses or in forms that generally aren't
commercially available.Other compounding pharmacies have been
blamed in recent years for serious and sometimes deadly outbreaks caused
by contaminated medicines.Two people were blinded in Washington,
D.C., in 2005. Three died in Virginia in 2006 and three more in Oregon
the following year. Twenty-one polo horses died in Florida in 2009.
Earlier this year, 33 people in seven states developed fungal eye
infections.
Compounding pharmacies are not regulated as closely as drug manufacturers, and their products are not subject to FDA approval.A national shortage of many drugs has forced doctors to seek custom-made alternatives from compounding pharmacies.The
New England company at the center of the outbreak makes dozens of other
medical products, state officials said. But neither the company nor
health officials would identify them.The company said in a
statement Thursday that despite the FDA warning, "there is no indication
of any potential issues with other products." It called the deaths and
illnesses tragic and added: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone
employed by NECC are with those who have been affected."A 2011 state inspection of the Framingham facility gave the business a clean bill of health.___Associated

(Reuters) - XL Foods, the owner of the Canadian beef plant that is at the center of one of Canada's largest meat recalls, said on Thursday it will increase food safety measures once the government allows the Brooks, Alberta, facility to reopen.It was the company's first statement since the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
suspended the plant's operating license last week, as more steaks,
roasts, ground beef and other products are recalled that may contain E.
coli bacteria.In all, the recall involves millions of pounds of beef
produced from late August to early September and shipped to stores in
Canada and the United States. Beef from the plant has been linked to
five illnesses and the recall led to one call for Canada's agriculture
minister to resign."We believed XL Foods was a leader in the
beef-processing industry with our food safety protocols, but we have now
learned it was not enough," the company said in a release. "We take
full responsibility for our plant operations and the food it produces,
which is consumed by Canadians from coast to coast."To improve safety, XL said it will use video cameras to
audit plant processes, will expand washing the sides of beef with
high-pressure hot water to eliminate E. coli contamination, and add
staff to each shift to monitor sanitary procedures.XL Foods said when the plant does reopen, it will begin with limited production.
The recall of beef from the plant began September 16,
almost two weeks after the CFIA learned of the contamination and began
an investigation. CFIA has said it did not recall meat earlier because
the products originally flagged had not made it onto store shelves.Since then, the recall has been expanded several times,
the latest being on Wednesday, and now involves more than 1,500
products.Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said on
Thursday that the plant will not open until the head of CFIA assures him
that it poses no health risk, and defended the government's handling of
the crisis."We acted as quickly and responsibly as we possibly could," he said.The United States stopped importing meat from the plant
on September 13, several days before Canada began to recall meat.The recall affected food stores across Canada and most
U.S. states and include Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Costco Wholesale Corp,
Safeway and Loblaw Companies Ltd.
CFIA has said that it identified deficiencies at the
plant that separately would not have led to E. coli contamination, but
collectively played a role.Opposition legislators in Canada on Thursday called for
Agriculture Minister Ritz to resign and pressed for a sweeping review
of food safety systems by Canada's auditor general.The CFIA has pointed to a five-day delay in XL Foods
complying with the agency's request for information, prior to the
recall. XL did not directly address that concern in its statement, but
said that it has always supplied testing results to CFIA inspectors
daily.Illnesses in five people in Alberta have been connected
to the beef from XL Foods, according to the province's health ministry.The meat recall is the biggest in Canada since at least 2008, when 22 people died after eating deli meat from a Maple Leaf Foods plant.E. coli, a strain
of which can cause sickness or even death, is widely present in
meat-processing plants, and regulators require packers to control the
bacteria within certain levels. E.coli can be killed by thoroughly
