KINGSTON, Ont. — A verdict has been reached in the trial of three members of a Montreal family accused of murder in the drowning deaths of four other family members — including three teenage sisters — after Canada’s first mass honour killings trial. All sides in the case, as well as media, were being called back to the courtroom in Kingston on Sunday afternoon to learn the fate of Mohammad Shafia and Tooba Mohammad Yahya, as well as their 21-year-old son, Hamed. The three were charged with murder after the bodies of three Shafia sisters — Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and 13-year-old Geeti — were discovered in a submerged vehicle in a canal near Kingston in June 2009.Also in the vehicle was Rona Amir Mohammad, the 52-year-old first wife of Shafia, whom he married in his native Afghanistan before the polygamous family moved to Canada in 2007 and settled in Montreal. All three suspects face four counts of first-degree murder. The trial, which began in October 2011, heard from 58 witnesses and was presented with more than 160 exhibits from both prosecutors and defence lawyers. While some described Shafia as the ultimate family man, other witnesses painted a picture of strict control in the family and limited freedoms for his daughters. The mechanics of getting the lawyers and interpreters back into the room means news of what the verdict is may take as long as an hour.

Shafia jury going into day two of deliberations
Posted By: Tom Armour tarmour@astral.com · 1/29/2012 4:15:00 AM

The jury in the Shafia trial has spent a long first day of deliberations without coming to a verdict. There were no questions either from the seven women and four men who started deliberating at 9 a.m. yesterday and ended at 8 p.m. with regular coffee and meal breaks. The jurors have been sequestered since 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, and went back to their hotel at about 6 p.m.They are deliberating the fate of Mohammad Shafia, 59, his second wife Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 42, and their son Hamed Shafia, 21, who have pleaded not guilty to four counts of first degree murder of four female family members. The Montreal couple and their son are accused of killing the couple's teen daughters and the husband's first wife.

The bodies of Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, Geeti, 13, and Rona, 52, were found in June 2009 in a submerged car in the canal in Kingston. The crown alleges it was an honour killing prompted by anger and shame over the daughters' secret boyfriends and increasingly westernized ways, and the first wife's support of them as well as her desire to divorce Shafia. The jury has three options: to find the accused guilty of first degree murder, which requires premeditation, guilty of second degree murder, which is not planned or deliberate, or not guilty. There is a mound of evidence before them after more than three months of testimony, over 160 exhibits, and hours of police wiretap conversations and police interrogation video.
