SPAIN-ISRAEL IS A JEWISH STATE-RECOGNITION

Latest update 10:21 25.09.11 Spain recognizes Israel as Jewish homeland, for first time-FM Jimenez's UN speech is particularly dramatic since Spain is considered a leading EU country to support Palestinian rights.By Barak Ravid

Spain’s Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez presented a new policy for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on Saturday, declaring Israel as the homeland of the Jews for the first time and saying that the issue of Palestinian refugees should be solved in such a way that it does not compromise Israel’s current demographic makeup of a Jewish majority.Jimenez’s speech before the United Nations General Assembly is particularly dramatic in light of the fact that Spain is considered the leading EU country to support Palestinian rights. Adopting such a pro-Israel stance may lead to other countries to follow suit.

The foreign minister stressed Spain’s commitment to Israel as the embodiment of the project to create a homeland for the Jewish people. She recounted how since Israel’s inception, it has suffered through many wars and terrorism against its people, adding that Israel’s security is a top priority for Spain.Jimenez called for the establishment of a Palestinian state along 1967 lines, with agreed swaps and Jerusalem as a shared capital with Israel. The security of Israel and Palestine will require effective guarantees in the future peace agreement, including a possible international participation, should the parties request it,the Spanish foreign minister said. She made clear that the best way to achieve such a deal would be through a negotiated peace treaty. The Spanish foreign minister also addressed the painful drama of the Palestinian refugees, presenting a new policy on this issue as well. She said that the refugee problem should be justly agreed upon by both Israel and the Palestinians, while still preserving Israel’s character as a Jewish state.

Jimenez said that Spain supports the General Assembly granting Palestine the status of a non member observer state, explaining that the international community must show that it is committed to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
Effective, sustainable peace can only be achieved through negotiations between the parties, she stressed, clarifying that Spain believes that the Palestinians could find in this new status a stimulus for the prompt resumption of negotiations. She also warned that this new status should not be abused or used in a way that is incompatible with the spirit of negotiations.Jimenez recounted Spain’s longstanding support for the Palestinians’ struggle against the occupation; however, she also emphasized Spain and the Jewish people’s centuries-long relationship.Spain’s identity cannot be understood without her Arab and Jewish heritage, she added.

US or Europe? Which Fiscal Time Bomb Will Explode First? Peter Schiff Euro Pacific Friday, November 25, 2011

With fiscal time bombs ticking in both Europe and the United States, the pertinent question for now seems to be which will explode first. For much of the past few months it looked as if Europe was set to blow. But Angela Merkel’s refusal to support a Federal Reserve style bailout of European sovereigns and her recent statement the she had no Hank Paulson style fiscal bazooka in her handbag, has lowered the heat. In contrast, the utter failure of the Congressional Super Committee in the United States to come up with any shred of success in addressing America’s fiscal problems has sparked a renewed realization that America’s fuse is dangerously short.Chancellor Merkel has been emphatic that European politicians not be given a monetary crutch similar to the one relied on by their American counterparts. Her laudable goal, much derided on the editorial pages of the New York Times, is to defuse Europe’s debt bomb with substantive budget reforms, and as a result to make the euro the strongest currency in the world. Much has been made of the poorly received auction today of German Government bonds, with some saying the lack of demand (which pushed yields on 10-year German Bonds past 2% –hardly indicative of panic selling) is evidence of investor unease with Merkel’s economic policies. I would argue the opposite: that many investors still think that Merkel is bluffing and that eventually Germany will print and stimulate like everyone else. It is likely for this reason that yields on German debt have increased modestly.

In contrast, the U.S. is crystal clear in its intention to ignore its debt problems. With the failure of the Super Committee this week it actually became official. American politicians will not, under any circumstances willingly confront our underlying debt crisis. While the outcome of the Super Committee shouldn’t have come as a great surprise, the sheer dysfunction displayed should serve as a wakeup call for those who still harbor any desperate illusions. Some members of Congress, such as John McCain, have even come out against the $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts that would go into effect in January 2013. Expect more politicians of both parties to cravenly follow suit.Over the next decade, the U.S. government expects to spend more than $40 trillion. Even if the $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts are allowed to go through, the amount totals just 3% of the expected outlays. In a masterstroke of hypocritical accounting, $216 billion of these proposed cuts merely represent the expected reductions in interest payments that would result from $984 billion of actual cuts. These cuts won’t make a noticeable dent in our projected deficits, which if history can be any guide, will likely rise by much more as economic reality proves far gloomier than government statisticians predict. Finally, the cuts are not cuts in the ordinary sense of the word, where spending is actually reduced. They are cuts in the baseline, which means spending merely increases less than what was previously budgeted. In the mean time, the prospect of sovereign default in Europe is driving safe haven demand for the dollar. So contrary to the political blame game, Europe’s problems are actually providing a temporary boost to America’s bubble economy. However, a resolution to the crisis in Europe could reverse those flows. And given the discipline emanating from Berlin, a real solution is not out of the question. If confidence can be restored there, each episodic flight to safety may be less focused on the U.S. dollar. Instead, risk-averse investors may prefer a basket of other, higher-yielding, more fiscally sustainable currencies. The irony is that Europe is actually being criticized for its failure to follow America’s lead. This misplaced criticism is based on the mistaken belief that our approach worked. It did not. Sure, it may have delayed the explosion, but only by assuring a much larger one in the future. In the mean time, many have mistaken the delay for success.

However, if Merkel’s hard line works, and real cuts follow, Europe will be praised for blazing a different trail. As a result the euro could rally and the dollar sink. Commodity prices will rise, putting even more upward pressure on consumer prices and interest rates in the United States.Any significant reversal of the current upward dollar trend could provide a long awaited catalyst for nations holding large dollar reserves to diversify into other currencies. My guess is that Merkel understands the great advantage the U.S. has enjoyed as the issuer of the world’s reserve currency. I believe she covets that prize for Europe, and based on her strategy, it is clearly within her reach. There is an old saving that one often does not appreciate what one has until it’s lost. The nearly criminal foolishness now on display in Washington may finally force the rest of the world to cancel our reserve currency privileges. The loss may give Americans a profound appreciation of this concept.

Russia Arms Syria With Missiles To Defend Against NATO Attack-Warns it will not tolerate western powers crossing a red line Paul Joseph Watson Infowars.com Thursday, November 24, 2011

We now know what those six Russian warships that reportedly entered Syrian territorial waters last week were carrying. Aside from representing a show of strength to discourage NATO powers from launching a military attack, on board were Russian technical experts ready to help Damascus set up a sophisticated missile defense system sold to them by Moscow.Russian warships that have reached waters off Syria in recent days were carrying, among other things, Russian technical advisors who will help the Syrians set up an array of S-300 missiles Damascus has received in recent weeks, a report in the London-based Arabic language Al Quds-Al Arabi said Thursday. Citing sources in Syria and Russia, the paper said that Moscow sees a Western attack on Syria as a red line that it will not tolerate, reports Arutz Sheva.

The S-300 missiles, which according to the report will be used to deflect a possible attack by NATO or the U.S. and EU, are long range surface-to-air missiles developed by Russia in 1979 for the purpose of protecting large industrial and military bases from enemy attack aircraft and cruise missiles. The system is widely regarded as one of the most powerful anti-aircraft arrays in modern warfare, having the ability to track up to 100 targets and engage 12 at any one time. Russia recently tried to sell the same system to Iran but the transaction was halted after pressure from the U.S. and Israel.Arming Syria with such a proficient means of aerial defense would obviously not bode well for any prospective no fly zone being planned by western powers. Reports have been circulating this week that fighter jets from Turkey and other Arab states would soon enter Syrian airspace under humanitarian pretenses with logistical aid from the United States.Along with the missiles, the report says that Russia has installed advanced radar systems in all key Syrian military and industrial installations. The radar system also covers areas north and south of Syria, where it will be able to detect movement of troops or aircraft towards the Syrian border. The radar targets include much of Israel, as well as the Incirlik military base in Turkey, which is used by NATO,states the report.French foreign minister Alain Juppé yesterday assured Syrian opposition forces that NATO powers are planning to launch a military intervention by imposing humanitarian corridors or humanitarian zones in the name of protecting civilians from the alleged abuses of the al-Assad regime. The prospect of air strikes being launched under a humanitarian banner are seen as increasingly likely given the fact that the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush has been moved to the Syrian coast in recent days having left its traditional theater of operations just off the Straits of Hormuz.

Tensions also escalated yesterday after the U.S. Embassy in Damascus urged its citizens to leave Syria immediately, while Turkey’s foreign ministry told its citizens to avoid traveling through the country on their return home from Saudi Arabia. As we have previously noted, attacking Syria could merely be an entrée for an assault on Iran because Tehran has promised to defend its ally.

Filtering file-sharing breaches human rights, EU court rules 24.11.11 @ 17:25 By Leigh Phillips

BRUSSELS - One of the main weapons in the record industry's arsenal against illegal file-sharing has been struck down by the EU's top court as a breach of fundamental rights. The European Court of Justice ruled on Thursday (24 November) that internet service providers (ISPs) cannot be be forced to filter internet traffic and block users from trading copyright music or other files, as to do so undermines privacy rights and the ability of people to freely exchange information. In 2007, Sabam, a Belgian collecting society - the outfits that gather royalties on behalf of artists - took Scarlet, an internet provider, to court, seeking to force the company to filter all peer-to-peer traffic and then block any unlawful communications.A Belgian court approved the injunction, forcing the company to install a filtering system. The ISP appealed, and the case was referred to the EU top court.EU law precludes the imposition of an injunction by a national court which requires an internet service provider to install a filtering system with a view to preventing the illegal downloading of files, the court decided.[The] injunction could potentially undermine freedom of information since that system might not distinguish adequately between unlawful content and lawful content.Digital rights advocates are calling the ruling hugely important not just for file-sharers in Europe, but around the world. The principles laid down in just a few lines in one of the paragraphs in the judgment are so strong that it will take a lot for states, which in recent years have increasingly embraced efforts to have ISPs police the internet, to move forward with the strategy they have placed their bets on.

It pretty much fatally wounds the very strong effort on the part of governments to privatise law enforcement, Joe McNamee, the director of European Digital Rights, told EUobserver.States have for some time now backed a model where the music industry goes to the ISP and says Look, we can save you a lot of money trying to avoid an injunction if on a voluntary basis, you just block this and this and this. It turns into a relationship just between the rights holders and the ISP without ever going to court. If the court had ruled the other way, the responsibility to enforce intellectual property rights would have largely been delegated to internet companies, a development that would have encouraged ISPs across Europe to permanently surveille their networks with filtering. The EU has also been attempting to export this very law-enforcement privatisation model to other countries - McNamee argued - via the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (Acta), a global anti-piracy treaty that aims to set up a global intellectual property framework with its own governing body akin to the World Trade Organisation.Acta, criticised for being negotiated largely in secret, has long been the bete noire of online civil liberties advocates. The ruling really places questions over the legality of Acta. The EU will have to completely rethink their approach or at least be a lot more subtle, he continued. It they try to enforce injunctions outside Europe, it means that they are trying to push a model that has been struck down inside Europe, which opens them up to legal challenges.ISPs for their part, who have resisted such injunctions due to the significant cost of installing filtering systems, also cheered the result.

Malcom Hutty, of the European Internet Services Providers Association called the decision of fundamental importance for the future of the internet.Considering the major contribution that the Internet industry can make to the economic recovery, it was indeed not the time to put the innovation of the Internet at risk.EUobserver was unable to reach Sabam for comment.

DEUTERONOMY 17:3-4
3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

2 KINGS 23:5
5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

Green Energy Is Awash in Red Ink Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh Thursday, November 24, 2011

American people are beginning to notice that the green energy is not so green after all, it is awash in red ink. Green jobs were being promised all over Europe when Spanish voters swept into power the Socialist party in 2004. More entitlements and withdrawal from the war in the Middle East were the icing on the cake. The Socialists presided initially over a period of sustained economic growth. Today Spain has 5 million unemployed, a huge public debt, and the indignados (the indignants) who are a small and disruptive minoritarios.Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the conservative Popular Party won the prime minister post in a landslide victory last Sunday. The voters spoke loud and clear against the Socialists’ lavish spending and mismanagement of the Spanish economy.Interestingly, Europeans keep voting for right of center parties, but the spending spree and the green economy march on. According to Daniel Hannan, only three per cent of European Union nationals have leftist governments (Austria, Denmark, Cyprus and Slovenia). Yet spending continues to rise (except on defense), bureaucracies continue to grow, powers continue to shift from national capitals to Brussels. No matter how Europeans vote, as long as Brussels dictates the laws and Germany runs the economic policy, the green oligarchy rules. On the home front, the bankrupt solar panel manufacturer Solyndra’s employees are now qualifying for trade adjustment assistance. After blowing $528 million dollars in taxpayer support, Solyndra’s 1,100 laid off workers will receive $13,000 each in federal aid packages, including job retraining and income assistance.

Since President Obama extolled the virtues of clean solar energy, why is it that Solyndra could not make a profit in such a hot market? Was this just crony capitalism or a photo opportunity for the White House to waste more taxpayer money?
Trade adjustment assistance was intended to ease the burden on the victims of free trade, to provide special unemployment benefits, loans, retraining programs, and other aid to workers and firms that were harmed by foreign competition after they’ve been in business for a while. Solyndra was hardly in business long enough to prove that it could not compete against the Chinese who were making solar panels quite cheaply. The information was already available that the Chinese were making solar panels for $1 or less each. Now the taxpayers have to cough up another $14.3 million in federal aid as a direct result of the bankruptcy. If the workers were highly skilled as the Department of Energy documents show, why do they need retraining?

President Obama gave Solyndra $535 million in loan guarantees in 2009 as part of his program for green jobs and sang its praises at the Freemont, Ca plant. The company burned cash so quickly, that the Department of Energy had to restructure the original defaulted loan in order to help Solyndra survive. During renegotiations of the loan, private investors were placed ahead in line to receive the first $75 million recovered in the event of liquidation, clearly in violation of DOE loan rules.Energy Secretary Steven Chu and the DOE have approved in September a $737 million loan guarantee to Tonopah Solar Energy for a 110-megawatt solar tower on federal land near Tonopah, Nevada, and a $337 million guarantee for Mesquite Solar 1 to develop a 150-megawatt solar plant near Phoenix, both under the same program as Solyndra. If Americans have spoken loud and clear that they want drilling for oil here in order to ease the dependence on the Middle East importation, why are we still pursuing expensive solar and wind energy that cannot even begin to replace the energy currently produced by fossil fuels that our huge economy needs? Why are we not building nuclear power plants? Why did President Obama stop the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada that would have delivered crude all the way to Texas? Why does he want to bankrupt the coal industry?

The similarity to the European Union situation is eerie. No matter what the majority of American voters want and no matter how they cast their ballots, the ruling power elite ignore them.Another sector of Obama’s green economy is in financial trouble, the renewable electricity grid. Among smart grid companies that have received taxpayer loans is Beacon Power that manufactures flywheel energy storage technology.
Beacon received $43 million loan guarantees from the same stimulus-funded program that financed Solyndra. Beacon filed for bankruptcy in October 2011 and announced in November 2011 that it will likely liquidate its assets instead of restructuring, meaning that the government may not recoup the $43 million through bankruptcy proceedings.Ener1 received more than $120 million in federal grants. It was delisted last week by NASDAQ for failure to comply with SEC filing requirements after suffering heavy losses and firing its top executives. Other green energy sectors may follow. The Smart Meter lawsuit in California will put in jeopardy the manufacturers of such meters if the judge rules that all litigants must have their Smart Meters replaced with traditional meters. This administration has already spent hundreds of millions of dollars for the deployment of Smart Meters across the country and especially in California.A class action lawsuit in California has brought the following issues in front of the Administrative Judge Amy C. Yip-Kikugawa, who ordered PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, and Southern California Gas Company to explain Smart Meter transmission details.

-misleading representation
-public exposure to pulsing RF radiation
-UL misrepresentation
-failure to disclose smart meter defects
-misrepresentation concerning FCC guidelines
-unlawful use of customer property
-excessive conduction
-excessive RF radiation
-failure to investigate customer complaints
-Americans with Disabilities Act Violation
-customer discrimination

The green industry with its faux green jobs, pushed by United Nations globalists who have scared and convinced billions of people that global warming is real, and it is the result of human activity, is a multi-trillion dollar profitable hoax. This hoax will extort huge fees in carbon emission taxes, flushing taxes, carbon footprint taxes, water footprint taxes, and other yet unnamed green taxes across the globe.
Billions of dollars are being spent to retrofit homes, cars, plants, entire industries, products, roads, medications and hospital care, food, agricultural methods, education, travel, water access, and land access, in the name of saving the green planet. Every facet of human life and every human being will be better controlled by a handful of omnipotent and omniscient oligarchs.

What is a Climate Threshold?
- Dr. Klaus L.E. Kaiser Thursday, November 24, 2011

The science, we were told some years ago is settled. But now, it appears, we are not so sure anymore. In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned the world that a climate catastrophe was just around the corner, if we didn’t curtail carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The IPCC was awarded a Nobel peace prize for that work. Co-Nobel-laureate Al Gore has made millions from his book and (so-called) documentary film An Inconvenient Truth, prognosticating doom and gloom.
Never mind that CO2 is vital to all life on earth.Never mind that CO2 is vital to all life on earth. Never mind that a British High Court found Al Gore’s movie full of sentimental mush. Never mind that the Climategate emails showed (possibly criminal) collusion and obfuscation by some of the independent scientists who are creating computer models used in IPCC reports. Never mind that temperature records for the last decade or so showed a global cooling trend, not warming. Never mind, that the low-lying islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, which were all supposed to be drowning from rising seas and their people fleeing for their lives, actually have been growing in population ever since. Never mind that that the Arctic sea ice is still there (at -40 F/C, you would not expect it to be different). Never mind that the polar bears and the seals are still thriving in the Arctic. Never mind that the penguins are doing fine in Antarctica. Never mind that the Himalayan glaciers have not melted away. Never mind that global CO2 emissions, as estimated by the U.S. Department of Energy (Nov. 2011) rose by 6% from 2009 to 2010, and the global temperature did not budge.

The latest IPCC revelations

And now to the latest IPCC revelations. In its Summary for Policymakers of the Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX), released on 18 Nov. 2011, it says in chapter D, on Future Climate Extremes :Projected changes in climate extremes under different emissions scenarios generally do not strongly diverge in the coming two to three decades, but these signals are relatively small compared to natural climate variability over this time frame. Even the sign of projected changes in some climate extremes over this time frame is uncertain. In other words, for the next decades, the world’s climate could be getting warmer, or colder, or may not change at all. That revelation, most certainly, is different from the imminent climate-disaster predictions offered in the past. Could it just be that the IPCC is beginning to see the light? The human (supposedly CO2-induced) effects on the climate are relatively small compared to natural climate variability.Climate determined by nature? What a novel idea! Despite the IPCC’s newly found uncertainty in their climate modeling, the report goes into great detail on the effects (including social effects) of so-called climate extremes.

Now, what exactly is meant by the term climate extreme? Well, the IPCC offers the following definition: Climate Extreme (extreme weather or climate event): The occurrence of a value of a weather or climate variable above (or below) a threshold value near the upper (or lower) ends of the range of observed values of the variable.
You may have noticed the introduction of a new term there, namely threshold. So, the question then becomes, what is a climate threshold or climate variable threshold ? Neither the text nor the accompanying graphs on climate extremes provide an explanation. In other words, it’s just more obfuscation than explanation. In common parlance, a threshold is a physical boundary, something you can bump against. There is no such boundary in the climate.

Developing world out of date on climate change, EU says 24.11.11 @ 17:46 By Honor Mahony

BRUSSELS - The EU has said it will sign up to extending the international treaty on climate change but has little hope that the US and China will follow suit.In a speech laying out the EU's position ahead of international talks beginning in Durban next week, EU climate change chief Connie Hedegaard Thursday (24 November) said it is unlikely that Washington and Beijing will sign up to what the world needs but called on them to set out a clear roadmap. The first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the only legally binding treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expires at the end of 2012.But countries are divided over whether to commit to a second phase - Russia, Japan and Canada have already indicated they will not do so - when big greenhouse gas emitters are not onboard.Hedegaard also underlined that the EU's promise to go to another phase has more symbolic rather than practical climate changing effect, with the EU only accounting for 11 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. However, she said the EU is unwilling to abandon the process as whether we like it or not, it is the only place where climate change is being discussed internationally.Underlining how climate change issues have slipped down the global agenda amid the economic crisis, Hedegaard suggested a new international deal could be in place a few years down the road, by 2020.

We think that the principles and timelines should be established now. And then by 2015, when we have the next review from the international climate panel, we could have all the details set so that no later than 2020 ... we would have the new system established. The Dane, who played an important role during the failed Copenhagen climate change talks in 2009 where the EU woke up to the fact that it is not the world player it had imagined itself to be - even on its pet topic of the environment - conceded that the pace is much too slow for my taste.Even accepting its relative weakness on the global stage, the EU is still willing to play the moral card. The EU is ready. The world is not waiting for the EU to move. We are there. We are ambitious. We need others to care and to move their positions because it is not enough to save the process. We also need to save the climate, Hedegaard said.

Negotiators from almost 200 countries will head to Durban for two weeks of UN talks beginning Monday but most experts are gloomy about the prospects of real progress at the event. One of the biggest political issues dogging environment negotiations is the split between richer and poorer countries. Developing nations argue that Western countries, who created the environmental problems in the first place, should not be trying to force a curb in the emissions of those countries playing industrial catch-up.Hedegaard, armed with figures from the UN showing China and South Africa fast approaching EU per capita CO2 emissions, suggested this is an artificial split that belongs to the last century. The Kyoto division between developed and developing countries no longer reflects the evolution of emissions. Today's rise in CO2 emissions is mainly driven by emerging economies using coal, she said.Arguing that the world is different to how it was in 1997 when the Kyoto agreement came into being, she said it was no longer valid to have a system where developed countries, accounting for less and less emissions, are obliged to hold to targets whereas emerging countries can do things voluntarily.Developing countries for their part argue that the volume of historic emissions by the west places the bulk of responsibility on them to fix the problem they created.Hedegaard said EU negotiators are going to Durban in order to secure continued progress but refused to speculate on what it would mean if even the asked for roadmap from the US and others fail to materalise by 9 December, the conference's end.

Anti-austerity general strike shuts down Portugal
Today NOV 25,11@ 10:13 By Philip Ebels

BRUSSELS - Much of Portugal was paralysed on Thursday (24 November) as a general strike against EU-IMF austerity shut down most of the country’s transport networks and public services. Most flights in and out of the holiday destination country were cancelled, with airports in the capital, Faro and Porto particularly badly hit. Much of public transport ground to a halt as Lisbon’s metro service was shuttered and the main train operator said that it experienced heavy disruption.Workers at ports, municipal buildings and the post office had also struck, according to the CGTP union, while factories in many parts of the country were closed, hospitals provided only emergency services and rubbish collection was suspended.Demonstrations saw thousands of mostly young people descend on the streets of Lisbon, although, in a counterpoint to images seen from fellow EU-IMF bail-out nation Greece, the marches were largely peaceful apart from scuffles in front of the parliament building, where seven protesters were arrested and one policeman hospitalised. The action, the second general strike in the country since the crisis began, saw rebel officers who participated in the 1974 revolution join the protests as marchers chanted: Spain, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, our struggle is international, according to local reports.

The government was eager to downplay attendance numbers, saying that only 11 percent of public workers participated in the strike, but union leaders have insisted it was one of the biggest in the country's history, drawing a larger crowd than in last year's strike, when an estimated 3 million people took place. It was a strike with a very strong signal against the impoverishment of the country, said Carvalho da Silva, leader of CGTP, Portugal’s largest trade union, at an evening press conference. There is a real sense of outrage, he added. The industrial action took place as ratings agency Fitch decided to lower the country’s rating to junk status, from BBB- to BB+, amid a worsened European outlook. The country's large fiscal imbalances, high indebtedness across all sectors, and adverse macroeconomic outlook mean the sovereign's credit profile is no longer consistent with an investment-grade rating, the agency said.Unions mounted the strike on the eve of debates in the parliament on Friday on the proposed budget for 2012, which includes tax hikes and spending cuts to comply with bail-out demands from the EU and the International Monetary Fund. The bill is to be voted on next week.Portugal applied for financial assistance earlier this year after a package of austerity measures proposed by the then minority centre-left government was defeated. In a prelude to recent elections in Spain, a ballot in June saw an historically low turnout and gave the centre-right People’s Party of current prime minister Pedro Passos Coelho an absolute majority.

Union leaders have said they would not hesitate to call for more action if the government continues to refuse to negotiate a budget that might enjoy a larger popular backing.Do they want a climate of dialogue or one of social conflict? We don’t want to, but if the government forces us we will go on another strike, said João Proença of UGT, a socialist trade union.Separately, Mario Soares, the country’s first democratically elected president after the fall of dictatorship in 1974, has launched a manifesto saying that international finance is threatening democracy. We cannot democratically salute the so-called Arab spring and be afraid of [occupying] our own streets and squares. We cannot sit back and ignore the growth in international financial anarchy and the dismantling of countries, which puts into question the very survival of the European Union.

Italy sides with Germany against eurobonds
Today NOV 25,11 @ 09:28 By Leigh Phillips

BRUSSELS - At Italy's first invitation for an audience before the Franco-German duo that powers European decision-making, Prime Minister Mario Monti made it clear that he backs the German position on eurobonds.Meanwhile, little advanced at the meeting of the EU triumvirate, with Germany refusing to discuss whether the European Central Bank (ECB) should intervene more robustly to defend the eurozone. The commission made a lot of proposals yesterday about budget discipline and we largely agree on that, Monti told reporters in Strasbourg after meeting with French leader Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, explaining that such a move chips away at policy competition between states.I just think that eurobonds, or stability bonds, whatever you want to call them, produce a leveling of the different competitive situations which are expressed via interest rates, which gives the wrong signal, as different interest rates are an indication of where work still needs to be done.

Merkel and Sarkozy have frequently met since the crisis separately from other EU members only to emerge hours later to present their vision for steps that should be taken. It was the first time an Italian leader had been welcomed into the Franco-German tent, although little emerged on Thursday apart from an announcement from Sarkozy that Paris and Berlin will propose their own modifications to the EU treaties. We are working on proposals [for changes] which have advanced a great deal, he said. The proposals are to be presented to the rest of the bloc at its winter summit on 9 December.Hopes on France's part that the meeting would resolve the core dispute between Paris and Berlin, the role of the European Central Bank in the crisis, were unfulfilled. The three instead put out a boilerplate statement of their continued support for the bank's independence. We all stated our confidence in the European Central Bank and its leaders and stated that in respect of the independence of this essential institution we must refrain from making positive or negative demands of it, the French president said.Germany has a history, a tradition and a culture. France has another. We're trying to understand and converge toward the same point ... Ms Merkel explains her worries to me, sometimes at length, and I tell her mine, and then, given the weight of history between our countries, we converge. I try to understand Germany's red lines and France's red lines.Sarkozy was reportedly irritated at Merkel's unwillingness to do discuss the issue, according to Le Monde, the French daily, despite making nice in public.France had expected the core issue to be placed firmly on the table. The same day, French foreign minister Alain Juppe had said the ECB must become the lender of last resort. It's urgent. It will be discussed this very day in Strasbourg, he said on France Inter radio. For his part, eurosceptic Czech President Vaclav Klaus in a new book on EU integration which he aims to publish in all the main EU languages, has lampooned the Merkel-Sarkozy duo.
Hardly a week goes by without a Sarkozy-Merkel meeting, in which - for us, but without us - with solemn faces and professionally-trained smiles, they make decisions on the future of our continent, his book said.

What is our first priority for victory in the 2012 elections, if there is one? By LAURIE ROTH,(2012 PRES CANDIDATE) on November 20th, 2011

The concerns, fears and conspiracies about the 2012 election are exploding far and wide. I hear about it everyday from my listeners on my radio show and readers. Sadly, with the Obama regime we have in the White House, most of our fears all have the possibility of coming true. These days there is no tin helmet conspiracy but the horrifying truth we already know about this President. I believe it clear that Obama is ineligible to be in the office of President. Otherwise, why would he have shown the media and country a forgery of a long form birth certificate on April 27th? Even though this was verified by Doug Vogt, veteran document examiner and many others as a total forgery and fraud, the media and Republican establishment were silent. This is beyond shameful and absolutely treacherous. We also know Obama is a total narcissist and attention seeking hound who has sought from day one to build his tentacles of power outside of our Constitution, House and Senate. Thus, the historical amount of Czars appointed to high level, controlling positions that only answer to Obama and completely bypass congress. We also find ourselves in an illegal war in Libya, which completely bypassed congress. We saw Obama get his marching orders from the UN, then when confronted by some in the House and receiving a confrontational letter by Speaker Boehner, he had the audacity to say that our congress and country must submit first to the UN. They were allegedly above our sovereign authority as a country. This was a total breach of the 1973 war powers act.

Recently, I have heard from some who believe Occupy Wall street will be used by Obama to institute Martial law and stop the next election. You certainly don’t have to dig far to see the wink and the nod from Obama to this emerging mob and the organized and huge money funding these groups from George Soros to Van Jones. Remember that all crises can and must be used, per the Saul Alinsky, Rules for Radicals, play book. Also, one of the Constitutional and American walls thrown in Obama’s face has been the emergence and growth of Tea Party groups all across the country. I have spoken for several of these groups and write for the largest on line Tea Party group in America, www.teaparty.org. The Tea Party, unlike the endless sea of names they have been called by Obama and his minions, are focused, patriotic, love our Constitution and fiscal accountability. They are not Republican, Democrat, black or white, but solidly American. This is a card that Obama didn’t expect America to play so well when 100 million of us focused American power during the last Mid Term elections. We saw a stunning defeat for Obama and the progressive left, taking back the House and almost the Senate.

Isn’t it interesting now that media and Obama dare to compare the Occupy Wall Street group to the Tea Party. The real Tea party is passé and yesterday’s news we are told. Naturally, you realize that has to be the spin, since the Tea Party groups have steadily grown in power, funding and are not controlled by Political parties. They are the groups who meet and don’t litter, rape people, rob stores and destroy their environment. The dangers and conspiracies are real but how do we respond so that America will win? Resist the temptation to look at common sense, what could happen, what Obama might try and pull, the feared manipulation or canceling of the next election. Yes, we all know corruption is everywhere. Voter fraud will be at its highest and global elitism and progressive evil is everywhere. We all know we are in a constitutional and American emergency. This next election is critical for our very nations survival and future. What do we know down to our very nation’s bone marrow, that we can and must do to actually save our country? WE MUST PRAY TO THE LIVING GOD OF THE HOLY BIBLE FOR DIVINE HELP. We must pray that God will raise up leaders who love Him and the Constitution and will serve both. We must also pray that God will destroy and judge the enemies of our country and deliver us from evil. God will listen to those who are humble before Him and truly pray for His guidance and help. This is our real, historical footprint, Constitutional footprint and Biblical footprint that made our country the most powerful nation on earth. Don’t you dare forget that because times are hard.We must resist the seduction to feed worry, feed fear and feed hopelessness. The Truth is with God all things are possible, even the saving of our country and appointing of a real patriot in the White House.Pray, believe and act. Confront fear and unbelief, then pray some more.Speak your mind and join www.rothrevolution.ning.com, and join me on my radio show each day www.therothshow.com.

Parliament approves economic governance six-pack
28.09.11 @ 17:43 By Leigh Phillips

After almost a year since the European Commission first proposed a package of laws radically centralising economic decision-making in the European Union, the legislative process approving the so-called six-pack of bills has finally come to an end with the European Parliament giving its assent on Wednesday (28 September).
Aiming to prevent future sovereign debt crises, the six-pack gives the European Commission new powers to slap fines on countries that flout rules on racking up high public debts and deficits. The parliament emerged largely victorious in its battle with the member states, and in particular France, to give the EU executive the power to impose sanctions that can only be blocked by a majority of votes amongst eurozone states.

A majority of MEPs in the conservative-dominated chamber worried that requiring approval by the Council before warnings could be issued to a country would lead to back-room deals in which countries needing to reform their budgetary policies would be let off the hook.In the end, a country warning will be issued if a vote in the Council is not taken within 10 days of a commission notice. If the Council decides to overturn the commission’s decision, they will now have to appear before the European Parliament and defend their rejection in public. The chamber also won the right to request the presence of finance ministers from countries that have received a warning to a dressing down in the parliament. The vote in the full sitting of the chamber however was close, as parties on the left voted against or abstained on some aspects of the package, believing there to be insufficient balance between market requirements and social needs.

The left however did win a victory via the parliament’s insistence that the commission consider not merely countries with high trade deficits, but also those running current-account surpluses.Germany and the Netherlands have crowed that such imbalances result from their successful economic management and should not need investigation. However, some economists argue that the core of Europe has engaged in mercantilist policies that are the flip-side of heavy debts in the eurozone periphery and are every bit as dangerous. The president of the parliament, conservative Polish MEP Jerzy Buzek cheered the result, declaring:We have developed a powerful and resistant armour against any future crisis,Liberal MEP Sylvie Goulard, one of the deputies to shepherd the legislation through the house, said that the bloc needed to go further still in terms of economic integration. This is not the end of the story. We will need to take further steps. But we have built a new system with this package today which will allow the EU institutions to work better together and will increase transparency, she said. The Socialists spokesman for economic affairs, Udo Bullmann, said that the vote today would have drastic consequences for European citizens. We think there exists another path out of the crisis. The reform is an austerity pact ... that leaves no margin of manoeuvre for EU states for intelligent spending and targeted investment. Some 78 civil society organisations including anti-poverty NGOs and trade unions issued an open letter on Wednesday denouncing the moves as anti-democratic.The proposals will enable EU institutions to make decisions on member states' budgets, economic policy priorities as well as on labour and social rights with little democratic debate, or accountability, the signatories, including France’s CGT union, UK-based Tax Justice Network and Attac Denmark, to the letter said.

US to conduct stress tests against euro collapse scenario 23.11.11 @ 09:28 By Leigh Phillips

BRUSSELS - US banks are to be subjected to stress tests on the scenario of a sudden shock to the American economy if the eurozone crisis significantly deteriorates.
Wall Street: US banks have significant exposure to eurozone debt (Photo: EUobserver)
The US Federal Reserve on Tuesday (22 November) announced that it would hold the tests, the third round of such trials since the start of the economic crisis, to measure which banks would be able to keep their heads above water if worst comes to worst. The tests will assume a rise in US unemployment to 13 percent up from the current nine percent and a fall into recession for the US economy beginning at the end of this year. The Fed said the tests will involve measurements against similar price and rate movements as happened in the second half of 2008, when the crisis erupted, but also on potential sharp market price movements in European sovereign and financial sectors. The trials, which will take place in the next few weeks, will cover 31 banks, up from the 19 that participated in the first round in the spring of 2009.

The results will be published by the end of March. The move comes amid growing concern at a decline in US bank stocks in recent weeks over worries about the extent of their exposure to eurozone sovereign and private debt.Additionally, Fitch, the credit rating agency, last week warned that the broad outlook for US banks will darken if the eurozone crisis is not resolved soon. The US ambassador to the EU, William Kennard, in Brussels on Tuesday declined to comment on actions Washington is taking in preparation for a potential collapse of the eurozone. The growing fears across the Atlantic come as banks in Europe have been making a dash to the European Central Bank (ECB) for emergency funds.EU commercial banks on Tuesday borrowed sums from the Frankfurt institution at levels not seen since 2009. The ECB said that 178 banks across Europe withdrew some €247 billion in one-week loans. The development suggests Europe's banks are finding it increasingly difficult to access credit from each other at sustainable rates due to uncertainty on their exposure to weak eurozone governments bonds.

Euro leaders meet amid bond crisis NOV 24,11 BBC

Italy's Mario Monti has begun debt talks with Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Nicolas Sarkozy, their first meeting since Mr Monti took office. At the meeting in Strasbourg they are likely to discuss Italy's economy and wider eurozone issues.
Germany and France disagree about whether bonds should be issued by the whole of the eurozone instead of individual countries. On Wednesday, a German bond auction failed to raise the target amount.Germany sold just 3.6bn euros ($4.8bn; £3bn) worth of 10-year bonds, from 6bn euros on offer. In my conversations with analysts, traders and officials I'm finding more and more of them are talking about the end game for the euro. Not the end, necessarily, but a moment of truth very soon that will either force a big leap forward, or a wrenching break-up,said BBC economics editor Stephanie Flanders.Even Germany cannot be a safe haven if this crisis goes critical.

On Wednesday, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso launched a consultation on whether the 17 eurozone countries could issue joint stability bonds.
The momentum is very clear, and it is in a bad direction. But Mr Barroso stressed that the creation of the bonds would require much greater scrutiny of the budgets and economic policies of individual members.Germany opposes both the issuing of joint bonds and greater involvement for the European Central Bank (ECB) in bailing out troubled economies. Its government is concerned that joint bonds would reduce pressure on member states to reduce their debt burdens. On Thursday, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said that it was urgent that the ECB be allowed to intervene in the debt crisis. It's urgent. It will be discussed this very day in Strasbourg, he told France Inter radio.Germany has said that EU treaties prevent the ECB from buying bonds as the lender of last resort. There has been much discussion of the implications of the failure to place all of the German bonds on offer in Wednesday's auction. It may be that demand for low-yielding bonds is limited or that it was a result of the Bundesbank taking an unusual approach to pricing its bonds. But nearly everybody thinks the auction does not bode well,Stephanie Flanders concluded.

2nd UPDATE: French Foreign Min: Sarkozy, Merkel, Monti To Discuss ECB Role--French Foreign Min: France, Germany Must Coordinate Budget, Fiscal Policies --French Foreign Min: ECB To Play Crucial Role In Crisis (Updates top three paragraphs with quote French Minister Alain Juppe)By Inti Landauro Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- President Nicolas Sarkozy will discuss a possible intervention in bond markets by the European Central Bank when he meets Thursday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti in Strasbourg, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said. The ECB must play an essential role in the current financial crisis by re-establishing markets' confidence, Juppe said in an interview with radio station France Inter.France and Germany don't always agree on everything, he added.Merkel has repeatedly opposed a wider role for the ECB. She is pushing for treaty changes to allow for greater economic integration of euro-zone fiscal policies.Juppe said France doesn't oppose revisiting European treaties, but such changes could take years and there is an emergency. An intervention by the ECB is an option that will be discussed during the Thursday summit, he said.

France is pressing for a greater role for the central bank in supporting the euro zone, including by taking on more sovereign debt. The ECB currently buys limited amounts of government bonds on the open market to stem the rise in borrowing costs.
Earlier Tuesday, Monti signaled he would argue in favor of creating euro-zone bonds at the meeting, but emphasized that jointly guaranteed debt should be seen as part of the move to an integrated European Union rather than as a quick fix to the debt crisis.-By Inti Landauro, Dow Jones Newswires; +33 1 4017 1740; inti.landauro@dowjones.com November 24, 2011 05:56 ET (10:56 GMT)

Brussels pushes for radical shift in budget powers away from parliaments 23.11.11 @ 17:45 By Leigh Phillips

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has proposed perhaps the most radical shift in decision-making away from parliaments and toward unelected bodies in the history of the European Union.Under proposals unveiled by the EU executive on Wednesday (23 November), while formal domestic lawmaking procedures are to remain in place, almost all fiscal policy decisions would be taken out of the hands of national assemblies and delivered up to European civil servants. The far-reaching proposals instantly provoked accusations of a hollowing out of democracy in Europe - allegations that the commission has angrily dismissed, saying the moves are necessary if the euro is to survive.Under pressure from markets to deliver tighter economic integration in the eurozone, the EU executive has proposed that governments in member states that use the single currency be forced to submit their budgets to both the commission and the eurogroup of states for vetting - before they are submitted to their own national parliaments. If the commission does not like what it sees, it can demand changes to the budget, as well as other mid-term plans a government may have for its economy. Those countries that have exceeded EU rules on the size of their debt and deficit would also be subject to tighter monitoring by Brussels and would have to submit regular reports on how they are progressing in trying to correct the situation. The commission would be able to issue recommendations for how this should be done.

All eurozone states would also be forced to create independent fiscal councils - bodies of experts unaccountable to parliaments - who would issue budgetary and economic forecasts.A country's budget would in turn have to be based on the reports of these fiscal councils. For countries in deeper troubles and facing serious financial difficulties, Brussels could send teams of inspectors - akin to the Troika monitors sent to member states that have received bail-outs.The overseers could be sent to any state that the commission decides, even if the county has not requested any international assistance. The commission is also seeking the power to recommend to the Council of Ministers, representing the member states, that a country should take a bail-out. While this remains only a recommendation, the market pressure resulting from such a call in effect renders this new power equivalent to an order to take out a rescue programme. The bloc's economy chief explained to reporters that it was necessary to be able to force countries to agree to bail-outs against their will.Recent experience has shown that a member state normally wants to avoid a programme until the very last moment, he said in the EU capital. This has caused the situation to worsen in the meantime both for the country concerned and for the whole euro area and increased costs to other member states and increased the financing needs as well. There are no volunteers for an EU-IMF programme.

Scaling back democracy

The unprecedented proposals come at a time when commentators, trade unions and even editorial cartoonists have made much of the EU's imposition of technocratic administrations on Greece and Italy. For some in the European Parliament, this goes one step too far.The centre-right in the European Parliament, the European People's Party, warmly embraced the commission's proposals, saying that national budgets must be developed with guarantees of independence, and the centre-left Socialists and Democrats welcomed strong surveillance and control over the implementation of national budgets. But the commission was also accused of undermining democracy by the Greens on the left of the house and of launching an assault on national sovereignty by the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the anti-federalist grouping to the right of the EPP.The EU is doing what it does best: creating new rules and layers of governance that undermine national sovereignty, said MEP Jan Zahradil, the Czech chairman of the ECR.The proposals are fundamentally flawed by the complete absence of any democratic check or legitimacy, said Green MEP Philippe Lamberts, the group’s economic policy spokesman.Simply giving far-reaching budgetary surveillance powers to EU technocrats, with no in-built democratic checks, would amount to a scaling back of the democratic process, he said.

Questioned by journalists over whether the moves do not insulate decision-making from elected chambers, commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he did not wish to engage in philosophical debates. He said that national budgets would still be prepared by governments and that national parliaments will of course have the final say.He argued that the request for closer economic integration was issued by the eurogroup, and so while there would be a delegation of responsibilities to the commission, ECB and eurogroup itself, this transfer of powers was voted on by elected representatives. It was their decision ... So in terms of democracy, let’s be clear. When democratic member states in full respect of constitutional rules entrust some entities with some powers, this is a fully democratic process and absolutely in respect of democratic principles. He compared the transfer of oversight of fiscal policy to the transfer of monetary policy to central banks that has occurred in many countries over the past two decades.Just as in our own countries, when we give some powers to a central bank, it is of course not accountable to a parliament, but of course the central bank was created through democratic procedures and is an institution that is absolutely built on a sound democratic architecture. He said that without these moves, the euro could collapse: It will be difficult if not impossible to sustain a common currency. He insisted: The principle of parliamentary democracy is sacred.

France recognises Syrian council, proposes military intervention Today NOV 24,11 @ 09:29 By Andrew Rettman

BRUSSELS - In a direct echo of previous events in Libya, France has formally recoginsed the opposition Syrian National Council and proposed that international troops create a secure zone for civilians.French foreign minister Alain Juppe signalled the change in policy at a high-profile meeting with SNC leader Burhan Ghalioun in Paris on Wednesday (23 November). The Syrian National Council is the legitimate interlocutor with which we will continue to work, Juppe told press.

He noted that a Libya-type no-fly zone is not on the agenda because an armed reaction could provoke a real civil war.But he added: We will ask our European partners about the possibility of launching humanitarian operations to alleviate the suffering of the population ... Should we create humanitarian corridors, or humanitarian zones? Commenting on the development, Ghalioun said: We cannot have greater, more important recognition than what the minister just said ... We have been recognised.Previously cited obstacles to military action in Syria were the lack of a UN mandate, lack of Arab support for outside intervention and tactical problems. But the obstacles are beginning to melt away. The UN General Assembly this week gave Western countries a political mandate for action by passing a resolution which called on Syrian authorities to protect their population. The resolution went through by 122 votes against 13 with 41 abstentions, not one of them an Arab country. It's now a new game: the Arab region has spoken, German UN ambassador Peter Wittig said.In terms of tactics, the creation of a Juppe-type humanitarian zone protected by international troops fits with French military thinking on how to bring down Syrian President Bashar Assad.

SNC member Muhammed Tayfur is already in talks with Turkey on a secure zone 8km inside Syrian territory which would effectively give the Free Syrian Army, the armed wing of the opposition, a safe base of operations.A source in the French military told EUobserver: There is no will to go for a no-fly zone or buffer zone. It's impossible to reproduce Libya in Syria, because of terrain which would make an air operation very difficult. But, the exact words I heard [from colleagues] were: If the Syrian rebels manage to hold a position (a bit like Benghazi in Libya) all cards are on the table. For his part, former French air force chief Jean Rannou earlier told this website: I don't see any purely military problems [for intervention]. Syria has no defence against Western systems. In a sign the EU is keen to stimulate an end-game in Syria, diplomats this week also agreed to drastically ramp up economic sanctions. The new package - according to Reuters - is to include a ban on investment in Syrian sovereign bonds, a ban on private-sector bank loans and a ban on trading Syrian gold.EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton on Wednesday echoed the Juppe line. The EU stands ready to engage with the Syrian National Council ... Protection of civilians in Syria is an increasingly urgent and important aspect of responding to the events in the country, her spokesman said after she met with a US-based SNC spokesman, Radwan Ziadeh, in Brussels.Prominent MEP Guy Verhofstadt after a separate meeting with Ziadeh in the EU capital said the Union should: Examine the possibility of a no-fly zone on the border with Turkey to safeguard civilians in that region.

Anti-Israel crusade on U.S. campus (The usual suspects) November 19, 2011 By Lee Kaplan

The University of San Francisco is a Jesuit college. One thing of interest is how the Catholic Pope during World War II did nothing to help the Jews during the Holocaust. In following tradition, USF’s campus President and Reverend Stephen Privett is no better. Alerted that one of his faculty, the virulently anti-Israel and anti-US Stephen Zunes arranged for a recruiting session to boycott the Jews on the Bay Area campus sponsored by Global Exchange, a non-profit group that gave $600,000 in aid to al Qaeda while our marines were fighting in Fallujah and provides aid to Hamas, Pruitt followed the example of the World War II Pope: He did nothing to stop it. In fact, he stonewalled any communication with the Jewish community.

Lying by omission: University of San Francisco’s Middle East Studies Department hosts Dalit Baum’s lecture to recruit more BDS activists and financially ruin the Israeli economy By Lee Kaplan, investigator, analyst

On November 9th, 2011, the University of San Francisco’s Middle East Studies Department and International Studies Professor Stephen Zunes, the school’s Muslim Students Association (MSA), as well as the Bay Area non-profit Global Exchange all sponsored little more than an indoctrination session against the Jewish state of Israel and Jewish businesses. The event promoted the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement against Israel while trying to pass itself off as an academic event. Professor Zunes has a long history of antipathy against Israel as a US ally.
The guest speaker for that evening was Dalit Baum , who runs the website Who Profits? and is an Israeli leftist who in the past has called for the dismantling of the Jewish state and who boasted she has already cost the Israeli economy in excess of 1.5 billion dollars in promoting BDS against Israeli firms worldwide. Baum bills herself as a feminist scholar and was introduced as such by Zunes, even though she holds only a degree in math and has never published any academic work regarding feminism. Baum made clear during the evening she was at USF to present to the students “information” and “tools” they could use to boycott and divest from the Jewish state. Zunes remarked at Baum’s courage speaking at USF because of Israel’s new law allowing lawsuits by companies affected by BDS against activists like Baum.

As a form of perversion, the BDS Movement gets touted on college campuses by the likes of Zunes and Baum as some form of fighting oppression and human rights abuses when it is actually an extension of the Arab League Boycott against Israel that was created in 1950. Boycotting was the first political action step taken by the Nazi Party in 1933 that led to the Final Solution. It is a form of economic warfare to force Israel’s government to capitulate to Arab demands. Zunes and Baum also tried to conflate their boycott efforts by fallaciously comparing Israel today with the 1980’s apartheid South Africa in order to instill in those attending the idea that they were fighting oppression.Global Exchange, Baum’s main sponsor, is the fundraising arm for Medea Benjamin’s Code Pink, an NGO that routinely provides monetary and physical aid to the terrorist group Hamas whose charter calls for not only the killing and dispossession all of Israel’s Jews, but the complete annihilation of all world Jewry, so already the event was off to a shaky start. Code Pink/Global Exchange also sent $600,000 in aid to the Iraqi Resistance while US marines were fighting in Fallujah.A photograph of Medea Benjamin was flashed on the screen demonstrating against Israel overseas, but few in the audience would have seen the connection or recognized her and Zunes mentioned the organization as if it were a purveyor of brotherly love. Dalit Baum also condemned the US presence in Iraq and Afghanistan suggesting it was mainly for profits and like the dispute between Israel and the Palestinian Authority a form of neo-colonialism.In order to put some distance between the event and itself after some Jewish groups expressed alarm the event would be held on the Jesuit campus, the administration required the head of the Muslim Students Association read a disclaimer that stated, The presence of a guest speaker on the campus of the University of San Francisco does not necessarily imply approval or endorsement by the University of the views expressed by the guest speaker or by anyone present at the event. A communiqué also went out assuring critics that a question and answer session would follow to allow for differing points of view. 2 x 4 cards were passed out with instructions to write questions down that would be addressed later that evening.

After the disclaimer was read, Professor Stephen Zunes immediately stood before the room and stated he felt obliged to declaim the disclaimer.I’ve been teaching here for 15 years, he said, and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard it explicitly said. Why it had to be said is an indication it’s a challenge to raise human rights issues when you are dealing with a strategic ally of the United States [Israel]. Zunes reminisced about his own activism in boycotting South Africa and tried to conflate what when on there in the 1980’s with what Israel is dealing with in the Palestinian Authority. While he mentioned whites discriminated against blacks in South Africa, he avoided mentioning that Arabs who are Israeli citizens enjoy full civil rights the same as Jews and even have affirmative action programs in Israeli universities, own businesses and serve as judges, policemen and even in parliament . There is much to be said, he continued, about boycotts, divestment and sanctions as a way to raise a challenge to the Israeli occupation. However, he made no mention that the Palestinian Authority does practice genuine apartheid against Jews (not to mention terrorism) and even has a law on the books that metes out a death penalty for selling land to a Jew, even retroactively, and a constitution modeled after those of Iran and Saudi Arabia that do discriminate against religious minorities.Zunes then introduced Baum as an outstanding scholar and human rights activist.Baum began her lecture by first asking the audience how many of them had heard of the BDS movement or participated in it. She remarked that few in the audience knew about it as she thanked specifically Zunes and the MSA for inviting her explaining that her purpose there was to report back to USF students on the BDS movement and give them tools by which to engage in boycotting Israel over here. She thanked specifically Zunes and the MSA for inviting her.

Baum’s lecture could only be described as a form of lying by omission; that is, a style of presenting just enough information about a topic to elicit a positive or negative reaction without presenting all the facts just as Professor Zunes had done in trying to conflate South Africa’s apartheid years with Israel’s current dilemma with the Palestinian Authority. In some instances she just outright lied.Baum began by saying, The idea of having a Jewish only organization in Israel is like having a whites only racist organization here in America. She explained how the activist organizations she belonged to had been fortunate enough to join Arab groups in solidarity to oppose Israel’s current existence as a Jewish state. She spoke of an Arab civil society of women’s groups, educators, unions, Muslim groups, even communists that was working to end the occupation (she made it a point not to mention the myriad terrorist groups that make up the Palestinian Authority government-to-be or that these civil groups support the terror groups in their activities). She claimed she would speak only of the 1967 occupation of the West Bank but alluded many times to events in Gaza without mentioning rockets fired on Israeli communities. Baum began by showing a map of Israel and the Palestinian Authority then saying that Israel has no borders. She claimed that 3.5 million Palestinians live in the area but that the Israeli communities (settlements) had control over the main roads and implied only Jews were allowed to use them. She referred to the areas around the settlements as being ethnically cleansed, to suggest racism when the Arabs and most Israeli Jews are racially the same, but practice different religions. She made no effort to point out that Arabs who are Israeli citizens are the same ethnic and religious makeup as Arabs in the Palestinian Authority nor about how various security measures were needed because Palestinian terrorists routinely attack Israelis who use those roads. Nor did she say Arabs from the PA can use those roads after getting security clearance, such as taxi drivers. She told her audience, If you are Jewish you can go to some areas and if you’re not you can’t go to other areas all in a country that has no borders.” This was an example of leaving out just enough information to make a false impression. The truth is that if a person is an Arab and an Israeli citizen he is permitted to go anywhere any Jewish Israeli citizen goes.Palestinian Authority Arabs are restricted due to terror attacks on Israelis. Israel’s lack of permanent borders is because the Arab states back in 1967 all agreed to refuse to make peace with Israel so the borders are in fact temporary armistice lines subject to final negotiations as part of a peace deal. None of the students attending her lecture would have known this and clearly Baum and Zunes didn’t want them to.

Baum then accused Israel of profiting from the occupation by selling inferior goods to the Arab population in the West Bank such as spoiled food, what she attributed to neo-colonialism. She later tied this profiteering as being behind the security costs in the West Bank. The security costs are the costs of the Palestinian resistance she said. Meanwhile, she made no comment of terror attacks on Israeli citizens both in or outside Israel. She made no attempt to suggest that the Palestinian Authority government is run by a terrorist organization (Fatah) and myriad such organizations run things there such as Hamas and even the PFLP that works with her organizational network in Israel. Nor but did she mention that the Oslo Accords sought to set up an independent Palestinian state there years ago but terror attacks against Israelis had made this impossible. Through some twisted logic she determined that Israeli corporations that provide jobs for Palestinian Arabs should be boycotted in order to make Israel leave the area to the Palestinians, without once explaining how any such activity would benefit the average Palestinian Arab.Baum displayed a photo of boys at a weekly demonstration in the village of Bi’ilin. She urged people in the audience to boycott an Israeli firm that manufactures tear gas because tear gas can make you very sick and you could die, but she completely ignored that the Arab population in B’ilin every Friday stages a riot at the Security Fence where rocks, Molotov cocktails and other incendiaries are thrown as Israeli soldiers. She called these riots demonstrations and declared them nonviolent. then said she never attends them physically herself because she is scared of the violence that goes on only from the Israeli police.Baum then explained the three purposes of her movement and BDS: The first one was Repression which she explained was Israel’s need to control the population in the West Bank. She complained that security companies in the West Bank were profiting from the occupation and this was why the occupation would not end (no mention of Arab terror attacks on Israelis or the recent murder of an Israeli father of four on the highways which is an almost weekly occurrence). Baum displayed a photo of a section of the Security Fence that comprises large security walls and towers around Jerusalem but is really only about three per cent of the entire fence that is mostly barbed wire. The fence in the photo was set up to block sniper shots into the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo in Jerusalem from the surrounding hills.

Nobody in the audience would know this and apparently Baum didn’t want them to. Attempts to raise this information denied and referred to the 2x 4 cards to be answered later.Baum explained her own history as beginning with the anarchist lesbian group Black Laundry is Israel. She elicited giggles from audience as she explained funny things her group would do in near weekly demonstrations against the Israeli military. None of her audience would have known that just for being lesbian in a Palestinian state she would subject to murder, let alone practice her sexual orientation openly as in Israel, nor that homosexuals in the PA routinely flee to Israel for refuge. She described Black Laundry as the first time part of a huge nonviolent movement that was facing a very violent Israeli military had done anything. She continued, being a nonviolent activist, I don’t’ like violence (yet she had no qualms about stopping the Israeli military that protects Israelis from violence).Baum next tied Israeli security companies, some that do business in the US because Israel profits from US subsidies. She declared this was done to provide Israel with free security products. It was at this point that Baum also began explicitly lying in her presentation, not just omitting facts for an unknowing audience she and Zunes hoped to recruit. She displayed a photograph of Ofer Prison in the West Bank where the military and police incarcerate terrorists or violent rioters. She described it as a very terrible prison for Palestinian political prisoners. She later said that she had never been inside or toured the prison herself nor that Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s system routinely earn even Master’s degrees and PhD’s while in prison at the expense of the Israeli taxpayer.

She described the administrative courts near the prison and accused Israel of arresting 13 year-old kids dragged from their houses in the middle of the night and brought there. Nobody in the audience would know these are the same rock throwers who attack Israelis on the highways and at riots such as in Bi’lin. The implication was that Israeli police just raid homes for no reason at all.She objected to an unmanned robot vehicle Israel builds and uses that patrols the border urging the manufacturer be boycotted. She talked of Caterpillar and Rachel Corrie and Gaza and told the audience Israel routinely bulldozes homes with people in them. She falsely claimed the Israelis just pull up to civilian homes for no reason and give the occupants only a few moments to flee. if you are very old or unlikely you die. This was blatant lying. Home demolitions only are used to destroy homes that were used as bomb factories or homes of suicide bombers and they are not random.Settlements was her second issue she said because they are illegal…She said that since WWI international law consensus was it’s not a good idea to let states hold onto what they occupy of other countries in a war, because it leads to later wars. She never told her audience that Jewish settlements were in the West Bank and Gaza before the war in 1948. She claims to cite international law by the 4th Geneva convention which states no state can take over another country’s land by force. Such occupation it says must be temporary until agreement reached over time. But this is exactly what Israel has been doing all along Baum has no international law degree nor is the Geneva Accords even applicable as it only is between established states that are signatories to the accords. There was no Palestinian state in 1967 and the West Bank and Gaza were Jordan and Egypt who ceded the land to Israeli control after the war, in essence dumped the Palestinian population in Israel’s lap.

She complained Israel held land 44 years without mentioning the 3 no’s announced by the Arab League after the ’67 war: “No negotiations, no peace, no Israel. The settlements she claimed are illegal by international law but again they are not since UN Resolution 242 of the UN allowed Israel to regain land lost in 1948 as part of a negotiated peace settlement and final borders. We have the law on our side, she said but the audience would never know she was referring to kangaroo courts that routinely find fault with anything dominated by totalitarian regimes that condemn anything a democracy like Israel does. Baum is not an expert in international law.
Baum then mentioned Israeli companies the BDS movement was targeting such as Lev Leviev. She showed photos of activists picketing the store in New York and crowed how successful they were, that they had allegedly getting his company to stop building settlements in the West Bank. This is a huge victory for a small group singing and dancing in New York. Her third issue was Land Exploitation she said as she accused Israeli companies of exploiting cheap land.. Why is it cheap? she asked the audience. An MSA student blurted out It’s stolen! Right! she replied. In fact, land taken by Israel for industrial uses or settlements is only former government land that belonged to the Jordanian government or Egypt’s. No private property of Palestinians is taken. Baum directly lied to the audience suggesting Israel just takes Palestinian private homes for its own use, taken with no legal recourse.Baum specifically targets the Ahava Company in the West Bank that makes cosmetics from Dead Sea mud boasting that the BDS campaign had forced the closure of the Ahava store in London . The audience would never know that the store closed not because people boycotted Ahava products but because BDS activists prevented the surrounding stores from doing any business so the landlord refused to renew Ahava’s
lease due to riots.Again, playing international lawyer, Baum accused Israel of conducting pillage for selling mud. Israel employs Arabs in the West Bank, and is trying to set up an independent Palestinian state that applauds murdering Jews and repeatedly says it will take over all of Israel, but the Jews are responsible for pillage.

Baum also attacked Soda Stream, boasting how BDS activists got the. European Court of Justice to force them from saying Made in Israel on their products because their factory was in the West Bank. You should educate people about that she said, the most important category is exploitation of resources and the Palestinian labor. At this point Professor Zunes recommended a film called the Bottomline about corporate exploitation of blacks in South Africa under apartheid. This was another false allusion to apartheid South Africa.Maybe you should have a training night one night where you can screen this film, said Baum, It shows how corporations supported the S. Africa apartheid regime and she suggested this scenario be used to attack Israel.
A training night? For an academic lecture? Try and find something around you that connect to the crimes in Palestine. And try to find something you can do over here that will influence the bottom line over there…..you can be effective. She urged students to … want to know how I am implicated, how products I buy are related to crimes over there. Not to make them feel guilty but to make a difference. She concluded with a swipe at Ariel Sharon who decided to build the Security Fence and said that years of Likud governments had exploited the West Bank. She made no mention of the horrendous bus bombings and terror attacks and murders of Israelis, may paid for by the late Saddam Hussein for the PLO and other Palestinian terror groups that necessitated the fence, nor how terror attacks dropped 97% since its installation.I raised my hand at the conclusion and to ask Prof. Zunes if I could ask him a question about bringing in a lecturer who could show how many falsehoods were just presented….Zunes replied I should fill out a 2 x4 card with my question for the question and answer session that was now to begin. I did so and handed him the card with my business card. Baum took all the 2 x 4 cards and each time she came on a question by a pro-Israel member of the audience she simply said, I don’t want to answer this question. She then answered questions that only supported what she said earlier, ignoring any questions that might elicit discussion. Zunes ignored my question.Threatened with arrest… for daring to ask a question?

When the event broke up I approached Zunes at the front of the room and politely asked him, Professor Zunes, you didn’t answer my question. Can I bring in a lecturer to lend balance to what was presented to your students here tonight? You’re a liar! Zunes screamed at me. A plainclothes security guard from USF stood next to me and threatened to handcuff me and throw me out of the room if I did not leave immediately. I asked the guard, What? For asking him a question? He’s the one who is yelling. I left. A complaint to the Administration with recording and eyewitness by me the next day was only stonewalled. This is the state of Middle East Studies at the University of San Francisco. Welcome to 1933 where students are taught to boycott, divest from and sanction Jewish businesses and it passes as an academic lecture.
