7.3 quake triggers Pacific tsunami on disaster anniversary
by Talek Harris - DEC 25,10

SYDNEY (AFP) – A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the western Pacific nation of Vanuatu on Sunday, triggering a small tsunami exactly six years after giant waves killed 220,000 people around the Indian Ocean. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the shallow quake generated a tsunami, but it cancelled a regional warning after the wave measured only 15 centimetres (six inches) higher than normal in Vanuatu.Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated, the centre said in its bulletin. This tsunami may have been destructive along coastlines of the region near the earthquake epicentre, it said, but cancelled the warning when no destructive wave hit.

The quake struck at 12:16 am on Sunday (1316 GMT Saturday), and the initial tsunami warning covered Vanuatu, Fiji and the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia. There were no reports of damage or casualties.Jackie Philip, a member of staff at the Melanesian Port Vila Hotel in the Vanuatu capital, said the hotel was busy with late-night Christmas revellers when the quake struck. Some of us, we ran outside and stood and watched the sea for a few minutes but nothing happened. There is no damage and no injuries, he said, adding that no tsunami warning had been given on local radio.A receptionist at Port Vila's Grand Hotel called it a small earthquake, adding that calls to the meteorological office went unanswered. Staff at the nearby Island Magic Hotel also said there had been no local tsunami warning. We haven't had any notification of a tsunami, a worker told AFP.We definitely felt the earthquake but we are notified if there's actually a tsunami.Meteorological and disaster management officials were not available for comment when contacted by AFP.The US Geological Survey said the quake was just 12.3 kilometres (7.6 miles) deep, and its epicentre was 145 kilometres (90 miles) west of Isangel, on the island of Tanna -- home to an active volcano -- in the Vanuatu archipelago.

The USGS revised its initial readings for the magnitude and distances involved, after first recording the quake at 7.6.At least a dozen aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 or greater hit the area in the hours after the main tremor, according to USGS.
Vanuatu, which lies between Fiji and Australia and north of New Zealand, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire -- an ocean-wide area alive with seismic and volcanic activity caused by the grinding of enormous tectonic plates.Sunday's quake came on the sixth anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters of modern times, when a huge tsunami triggered by an undersea quake off Indonesia killed more than 220,000 people around the Indian Ocean. After the disaster, which came with little or no warning for millions of coastal residents, regional governments deployed a string of monitoring buoys in the Indian and Pacific Oceans to keep track of any abnormal waves. In August, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake off Vanuatu generated a small tsunami and sent thousands of frightened people running for the hills. In September last year, Samoa in the Pacific suffered its worst natural disaster when three rapid-fire quakes of up to 8.1 magnitude unleashed waves as high as 15 metres (50 feet) that flattened villages and tourist resorts. The seismic catastrophe claimed 143 lives in Samoa, 34 in the US-administered territory of American Samoa and another nine in Tonga.Vanuatu lies between Australia and Fiji and has a population of 220,000 scattered across several islands including Tanna, south of Port Vila, where the fiery Yasur volcano is a major tourist draw.

JESUS IS OUR CREATOR

1 PETER 1:20
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

JOHN 1:3,10
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

COLOSSIANS 1:16
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

HEBREWS 1:1-2
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

PSALMS 19:1-3
1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

JESUS IS OUR GOD

JOHN 1:1,14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
14 And the Word (JESUS) was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

LUKE 1:46-47
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

ACTS 16:31,34
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

HEBREWS 1:8
8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

1 JOHN 5:20
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

JESUS IS OUR SAVIOUR

ACTS 4:12
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

LUKE 4:42
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

1 TIMOTHY 1:15
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

ISAIAH 53:4-6
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

HEBREWS 12:2
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

JESUS IS OUR MEDIATOR (LAWYER)

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

1 JOHN 2:1-2
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1 JOHN 1:9
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

CHRISTMAS SCRIPTURES

ISAIAH 2:1-5
1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.(DANIELS 70TH WEEK)(DANIEL 9:24)
2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
3 Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
4 And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

ISAIAH 7:14
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.(GOD WITH US)

ISAIAH 9:6-7
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:(1ST COMING) and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.(2ND COMING AS RULING KING FOREVER)
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

MATTHEW 1:16-25
16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

MATTHEW 2:1-23
1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.
12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

LUKE 1:26-80
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

LUKE 2:1-52
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

North Carolina Economy Moves From Textiles to Tech
By Jonathan Serrie Published December 22, 2010| FoxNews.com

Facebook Post: North Carolina's economy is moving away from the textile business and into high-tech future. The foothills of North Carolina are famous for furniture and textiles. But as jobs in those industries moved overseas, local leaders worried about too many closed factories and skyrocketing unemployment. We have been as high this year as 17.9 percent, said Tom Johnson of the Economic Development Commission of North Carolina’s Rutherford County. A lot of that, of course, is attributable to textile operations closing. So, Rutherford County, and other small communities in the foothills of North Carolina, banked on a high-tech future. They started luring companies such as Apple, Google and Facebook to build massive computer data centers. Such facilities require plenty of electricity and extensive cooling systems. With the region’s history of manufacturing, much of the power and water infrastructure is already in place. In fact, Facebook is building a new data farm right on the property of an old textile mill near Forest City, N.C.What we recognized in North Carolina is that it has an abundance of power, said Peter Marin, president of T5 Partners, a company that develops data centers. It has nuclear power. It has a pro-business environment.

What the Tax Deal Means to Your Wallet Two Senators Promise 2011 Deficit-Cutting Bill FCC Approves Plan to Regulate Internet Internet Road Rules Near FCC Vote New Census May Complicate Obama 2012 Bid Marin said generous tax incentives are another big factor in attracting the expensive facilities to North Carolina. The region is now aggressively marketing itself as a Data Center Corridor. The opportunity that these facilities are providing goes long beyond just the taxable opportunities, said Scott Millar, president of the Catawba County Economic Development Corporation. But the taxes aren’t bad by themselves.Economic development officials predict the data centers will create jobs, albeit indirectly.A typical data center may have 35 or 40 or 45 jobs, whereas a textile company may have 450 or 500 jobs, said Rutherford County’s Tom Johnson. There’s a huge difference in the employment. But there’s also a huge difference in the investment level. Facebook was announced at $450 million.
Johnson said that level of investment has already created construction jobs and is likely to create new opportunities for support industries and related employment in a region that is hungry for work.

Data center corridor seeing a lot of traffic Published Monday, November 29, 2010 8:38 am by Ronnie Bryant, Special to The Post CHARLOTTE POST

Traffic has really picked up lately in the data center corridor in the western part of North Carolina. Infocrossing Inc., a subsidiary of Wipro Ltd, is the most recent addition to what is becoming a fast-growing cluster. The company, which manages the high-volume computer operations of other companies, plans to build a $75 million data center in Kings Mountain. Infocrossing’s announcement comes on the heels of one by Facebook, which announced it will build a $450 million data center in Rutherford County. Google was the first big name to settle into that area, landing in Caldwell County in 2007. Apple followed with an announcement in Catawba County in 2009.

Although data centers bring few jobs – Wipro expects to hire about 17 full-time workers – the operations are large energy consumers and add tremendously to the tax base. Additionally, the growing grouping enhances the state's reputation as having a high-tech economy.

The public and private sectors are leveraging available assets in the western part of the state to appeal to data centers’ sweet spots – an abundance of low-cost energy, a good labor pool, strong fiber optics infrastructure, lack of extreme weather, excellent transportation network, plus tax breaks and a high quality of life. Due to the importance of providing consistent service, data centers are risk adverse, and when they look Google’s and Apple’s – and now Facebook’s and Infocrossing’s – decisions to locate in western North Carolina, other data centers will be encouraged to come as well.

Monday, December 20, 2010 White House Gives Go-ahead For Elitists to Control DNA Barcode Gene identified in plants -- animals next? Michael Edwards Activist Post
http://www.activistpost.com/2010/12/white-house-gives-go-ahead-for-elitists.html

It is official: in the name of clean energy, pollution control and medicine, the White House is prepared to let scientists, spearheaded by the J. Craig Venter Institute, manipulate DNA of organisms to forge new life forms, according to a recent AFP article. The Orwellian language used by Barack Obama's Presidential Commission For The Study of Bioethical Issues is a study in wordiness, misdirection, and obfuscation that is typical when trying to cover up the true intent. For example, on one hand the Commission acknowledges that the J. Craig Venter Institute has found the ability to forge new life forms, but also states that Venter's team didn't create life, since the work primarily involved altering an already existing life form. Since we won't get straight truth from the mainstream media, science, or the government, it is better advised to look at who Craig Venter is, and what public statements have been issued about this agenda that literally could transform the human race from a naturally evolving species into a manipulated computer code.

As far back as 2003, a BBC article titled Warning on Gene ID Cards cited Craig Venter as a leading scientist in gene mapping who, at the time, was offering the very rich a chance to buy their map for $710,000. This sets up, in effect, a division of gene class where elites would have access to potentially life-saving information, while the underclass could be discriminated against by insurance companies and employers. The short article concludes with an even more critical warning by Dr. Helen Wallace of GeneWatch that, What we could end up with is a massive DNA database by the back door. And this was almost 8 years ago.In the intervening time, the possible misuse of such a database became clear in 2006 when collaboration between the J. Craig Venter Institute and Google resulted in a ZDNet article titled Google Accused of Bio-Piracy. Plans were revealed to create a searchable online database of all the genes on the planet. The source of this story came from a Pulitzer Prize winner, David Vise, but to this day it seems that neither the J. Craig Venter Institute, nor Google have acknowledged any ongoing partnership.

The Institute announced in May of this year that it finally had created the first self-replicating, synthetic bacterial cell, dubbed Synthia by the media. Most people probably concluded that this was a rather innocuous, self-promoting announcement designed to receive funding. However, if one looks deeper into this press release, one should notice the words synthetic genome. This is an admission that goes beyond simply altering an existing life form, as the Institute asserts, but illustrates the ability to replicate the entirety of an organism's hereditary information. The technical breakdown of this initiative is exceedingly important, but is better left to experts in the field. Regardless, the assertions of the J. Craig Venter Institute have found the software of life are being taken seriously by the White House at a time when revelations about how computing, medicine, technology, and the police state are converging on an almost daily basis. In just the past month, the following stories made headlines: Lawsuits have been filed in Austin, TX by parents who have discovered that DNA had been secretly taken from babies and sold to pharmaceutical companies and/or the Armed Forces for genetic research as far back as 2002.

Unions have started to implement biometric ID threat assessment cards at the behest of Homeland Security in a cooperative effort between public and private authorities.
Iris scan technology is being used by NYC law enforcement to create a biometric database in homage to Minority Report.GM Mosquitoes have been released in the Cayman Islands to combat Dengue fever, while noted depopulation advocate, Bill Gates, has been funding the initiative.Connections have been made between the above-mentioned Dengue fever mosquito release to the history of CIA bioweapons research, as well as various NGOs and Globalist think tanks that will apply the funding of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation toward flying vaccines as a solution to the problem of viruses. It is worth adding that part of the stated purpose of the first artificial cell, Synthia, is faster vaccine production. The flowery language that comes from elite circles about Utopian equality ring empty in the face of their documented history of discriminatory programs and depopulation initiatives. Giving over our blood, and now our life force, to elites who long ago distanced themselves from the concerns of the average man and woman does not bode well for the health of humanity.

Warning on gene ID cards 2003

Scientists have decoded human DNA
The complete genetic makeup of individuals could soon be scanned and recorded on a smart card, says a leading scientist. But pressure groups say that the genetic identity cards could lead to discrimination without much benefit to the citizen. Sir Paul Nurse, the chief executive of Cancer Research UK, predicts that the process of unravelling a human genome could be completed far more swiftly in future. We need to be extremely careful how this technology is used to shape our society

Sir Paul Nurse, Cancer Research UK
In a speech to the Royal Society's People's Science Summit, he said he could foresee a time - perhaps within 20 years - when the entire genetic code of every newborn baby would be recorded. This, he said, might eventually help predict vulnerability to common diseases - and help individuals avoid illness by taking preventive measures.

Gene underclass

But Sir Paul said that the advances risked leading to genetic apartheid as insurers and employers ruled out people with genetic defects. Sir Paul, awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2001, said: In 1985, it took three years to decode a single gene - now we can sequence the entire human genome in just a few years. The American scientist Craig Venter is already offering the very rich to buy a map of their genomes at a staggering $710,000 (£450,000), but even he anticipates selling them for much less in years to come.

Combination of factors

He said some genetic tests - for less common conditions such as Huntington's disease and cystic fibrosis - could predict future disease with some accuracy. But he insisted more common diseases such as cancer and heart disease were likely to be the result of a combination of many different genes alongside lifestyle factors such as poor diet or smoking. He said: We need to be extremely careful how this technology is used to shape our society - this issue is too important to be left to scientists and policy makers alone.Dr Helen Wallace, from the pressure group Genewatch, said that the public was being misled by promises that a map of their genome could offer certainty about their future health.Although gene tests can be very useful, there is no way you could use them to predict common disease. What we could end up with is a massive DNA database by the back door.

Science of man-made life can proceed: White House
Dec 16 10:10 AM US/Eastern

The White House on Thursday said the controversial field of synthetic biology, or manipulating the DNA of organisms to forge new life forms, poses limited risks and should be allowed to proceed. An expert panel convened by President Barack Obama advised vigilance and self-regulation as scientists seeks ways to create new organisms that could spark useful innovations in clean energy, pollution control and medicine. The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues concluded that synthetic biology is capable of significant but limited achievements posing limited risks, it said in its first report.Future developments may raise further objections, but the Commission found no reason to endorse additional federal regulations or a moratorium on work in this field at this time. The panel was created by Obama last year. Its first order of business was to consider the issue of synthetic biology after the J. Craig Venter Institute announced in May it had developed the first self-replicating bacteria cell controlled by a synthetic genome.

Critics said the discovery was tantamount to playing God, creating organisms without adequate understanding the ramifications, and upsetting the natural order. Announcing the creation of the first synthetic cell, lead researcher Craig Venter said at the time it certainly changed my views of the definitions of life and how life works. But the commission said Venter's team had not actually created life, since the work mainly involved altering an already existing life form. Thoughtful deliberation about the meaning of this achievement was impossible in the hours that elapsed between the breaking news and the initial round of commentaries that ensued, it said in its report.Of note, many scientists observe that this achievement is not tantamount to creating life in a scientific sense because the research required a functioning, naturally occurring host cell to accept the synthesized genome.

ENVIRONMENT & SCIENCE MAY 21, 2010.Scientists Create Synthetic Organism
By ROBERT LEE HOTZ

Heralding a potential new era in biology, scientists for the first time have created a synthetic cell, completely controlled by man-made genetic instructions, researchers at the private J. Craig Venter Institute announced Thursday.Tom Deerinck and Mark Ellisman, National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research, University of California, San Diego

Scanning electron micrographs of M. mycoide
.We call it the first synthetic cell, said genomics pioneer Craig Venter, who oversaw the project. These are very much real cells.Created at a cost of $40 million, this experimental one-cell organism, which can reproduce, opens the way to the manipulation of life on a previously unattainable scale, several researchers and ethics experts said. Scientists have been altering DNA piecemeal for a generation, producing a menagerie of genetically engineered plants and animals. But the ability to craft an entire organism offers a new power over life, they said.

Journal Community
..The development, documented in the peer-reviewed journal Science, may stir anew nagging questions of ethics, law and public safety about artificial life that biomedical experts have been debating for more than a decade. This is literally a turning point in the relationship between man and nature, said molecular biologist Richard Ebright at Rutgers University, who wasn't involved in the project. For the first time, someone has generated an entire artificial cell with predetermined properties.David Magnus, director of the Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics, said, It has the potential to transform genetic engineering. The research is going to explode.Leery of previous moral and ethical debates about whether it is right to manipulate life forms—which arose with the advent of cloning, stem-cell technology and genetic engineering—some researchers chose neutral terms to describe the experimental cell. Some played down the development.I don't think it represents the creation of an artificial life form, said biomedical engineer James Collins at Boston University. I view this as an organism with a synthetic genome, not as a synthetic organism. It is tough to draw where the line is.For the first time, scientists have created a synthetic cell, heralding a new era in biology. Shelly Banjo talks to Robert Lee Hotz about the huge implications of this development.
.The new cell, a bacterium, was conceived solely as a demonstration project. But several biologists said they believed that the laboratory technique used to birth it would soon be applied to other strains of bacteria with commercial potential.

I think this quickly will be applied to all the most important industrial bacteria, said biologist Christopher Voigt at the University of California, San Francisco, who is developing microbes that help make gasoline.Several companies are already seeking to take advantage of the new field, called synthetic biology, which combines chemistry, computer science, molecular biology, genetics and cell biology to breed industrial life forms that can secrete fuels, vaccines or other commercial products.

Synthetic Genomics Inc., a company founded by Dr. Venter, provided $30 million to fund the experiments and owns the intellectual-property rights to the cell-creation techniques. The company has a $600 million contract with Exxon Mobil Corp. to design algae that can capture carbon dioxide and make fuel.At least three other companies—Amyris Biotechnologies in Emeryville, Calif.; LS9 Inc. in San Francisco; and Joule Unlimited in Cambridge, Mass.—are working on synthetic cells to produce renewable fuels.Although patents on single genes now face legal challenges, Dr. Venter said he intends to patent his experimental cells. They are pretty clearly human inventions, he said. Before making their work public, the researchers said, they briefed White House officials, members of Congress and officials from several government agencies. Within minutes of Thursday's announcement, the House Energy and Commerce Committee announced it would hold a public hearing on the new technology next week.

Environmental groups also reacted quickly. Friends of the Earth issued a statement asking the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration to fully regulate all synthetic biology experiments and products, while ETC Group, a group based in Canada, called for a global moratorium on synthetic biology. There was no immediate reaction from Roman Catholic and Protestant groups that have questioned such developments in the past. There was some support. It is very much within divine mandate that we do these things, said theologian Nancey Murphy, who studies Christianity and science at the Fuller Theological Seminary, a multidenominational Christian seminary in Pasadena, Calif. The announcement Thursday was the culmination of a project Dr. Venter and his colleagues have pursued since 1995. In a series of peer-reviewed papers, the group has published the interim technical steps. So far, that research has withstood scrutiny.

J. Craig Venter Institute

Daniel G. Gibson at the J. Craig Venter Institute, who was the lead researcher on the Science paper announcing creation of the first synthetic cell
.The latest research was reviewed by a panel of independent scientists, but no one has duplicated the team's experiment. Other researchers working on different approaches in the field found the report credible and said it combined a series of prior advances. They are pulling all the pieces together, said Drew Endy, a biologist at Stanford University who is president of the BioBricks Foundation, a nonprofit consortium organized by researchers from Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California to make the DNA tools of synthetic biology freely available. To make the synthetic cell, a team of 25 researchers at labs in Rockville, Md., and San Diego, led by bioengineer Daniel Gibson and Mr. Venter, essentially turned computer code into a new life form. They started with a species of bacteria called Mycoplasma capricolum and, by replacing its genome with one they wrote themselves, turned it into a customized variant of a second existing species, called Mycoplasma mycoides, they reported.

.To begin, they wrote out the creature's entire genetic code as a digital computer file, documenting more than one million base pairs of DNA in a biochemical alphabet of adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. They edited that file, adding new code, and then sent that electronic data to a DNA sequencing company called Blue Heron Bio in Bothell, Wash., where it was transformed into hundreds of small pieces of chemical DNA, they reported. To assemble the strips of DNA, the researchers said they took advantage of the natural capacities of yeast and other bacteria to meld genes and chromosomes in order to stitch those short sequences into ever-longer fragments until they had assembled the complete genome, as the entire set of an organism's genetic instructions is called. They transplanted that master set of genes into an emptied cell, where it converted the cell into a different species.Journal Communitydiscuss.. What makes a big part of this possible is the enormous increase in computing power over the last few years, and it's what will continue to make advances like this appear at a faster clip. The singularity approaches. —Kevin Carpenter.

We make a genome from four bottles of chemicals; we put that synthetic genome into a cell; that synthetic genome takes over the cell, said Dr. Gibson. The cell is entirely controlled by that new genome. The scientists didn't give the new organism its own species name, but they did give its synthetic genome an official version number, Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI-syn1.0.To set this novel bacterium—and all its descendants—apart from any natural creation, Dr. Venter and his colleagues wrote their names into its chemical DNA code, along with three apt quotations from James Joyce and others. These genetic watermarks will, eventually, allow the researchers to assert ownership of the cells. "You have to have a way of tracking it, said Stanford ethicist Mildred Cho, who has studied the issues posed by the creation of such organisms.Write to Robert Lee Hotz at sciencejournal@wsj.com

Bell Canada to outsource voice projects to India
By Ravi Menon Nov 22 2010 , Bangalore

India best for offshore outsourcing
for suitable vendors as part of outsourcing key voice-based projects for its internet, Solo Mobility, Bell Mobility and satellite TV divisions to India.Bell Canada plans to outsource these projects via fixed payouts as part of a deal worth approximately $25 million to $30 million a year, according to market sources. The projects being sent to India will be largely inbound and Bell Canada is looking at outsourcing the work to a outsourcing partner with strong competencies in carrying out front-end work for international clients.A Bell Canada spokesperson did not reply to a questionnaire seeking comment on the development.Founded in 1880, Montreal-headquartered Bell Canada is a leading player in the Canadian wireless telecommunication industry, controlling about 30 per cent of total wireless subscribers in that country. Wireless, the key revenue driver, makes up roughly 50 per cent of Bell Canada’s revenues.Over the last 10 years, Bell Canada’s holding company Bell Canada Enterprises has branched out into complementary business segments such as cable TV, VoIP, IPTV, broadband internet, and wireline phones. With this, key divisions under Bell Canada include internet services provider Bell Internet, cellular wireless services provider Bell Mobility and direct-to-home satellite division Bell TV.

Bell Canada is cutting Canadian jobs in favour of contractors overseas MAY 2007

MONTREAL, May 2,2007 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Telecommunications Employees'
Association (CTEA) is denouncing Bell Canada's intention of cutting jobs and
reducing the work hours of its employees in favour of outsourcing companies in
India. The concern stems from the fact that the long term affect of this
action is unknown.During 2005 bargaining, Bell Canada increased the salary of most
employees in the Assignment/Activation group stating they were underpaid
compared with telecommunications competitors, said Line Brisson, Chairman of
the CTEA Clerical Bargaining Committee. Today, the Company alleges these
employees are costing too much and announced their jobs will be eliminated.
This is unacceptable. The issue here is that they are now comparing the job
that is done on Canadian soil with the market wages overseas. As long
companies such as Bell Canada use overseas markets as the basis of comparison
for wages, the jobs will always be too expensive to perform in Canada.CTEA members made HUGE CONCESSIONS in 2005 by signing a Collective
Agreement intended to secure their jobs.

The CTEA is losing count of the number of decisions Bell Canada has made
to the disadvantage of its employees: contracting out of Residential and
Business Client Representative jobs, contracting out of account collection and
repair services to Expertel, Minacs, and contractors overseas. Bell Canada is
continually seeking to lower its costs by reducing its Canadian staff and
increasing cheap labour. The CTEA wants to know what kind of savings is Bell
Canada seeing when they charge their customers rates for services that are set
for the Canadian market, yet the labour behind that service is being paid at
overseas market wages? Outsourcing of jobs places a very real strain on the economic condition of any country, and at the end of the day, customers and the Canadian economy will be paying the price.

Bell Canada recently announced that it intends to slash the benefits of
its future pensioners - yet another savings they will incur.Bell Canada continues to level down. The CTEA Bargaining Committee found it even more shocking when the Company who offers telephone service, shared with the them that employees taking over the Activation function in India will not be equipped with telephones themselves. This is UNACCEPTABLE behaviour from a Company that proclaims itself as a communications leader in Canada. The CTEA is opposed to outsourcing and it will take all the necessary means to promote the job security of its members.

About the CTEA:

The CTEA is an independent union certified in the 1940s by the Canadian
Labour Relations Board to represent employees of Bell Canada. Over the years,
the CTEA has been certified as the bargaining representative for several
groups of employees working for employers such as Comtech, Bell Aliant, ACMS
(Amdocs), Télébec S.E.C., Yellow Pages Group, and Bell ICT Outsourcing
Solutions inc.

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Northeast to miss white Christmas
– Wed Dec 22, 4:10 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Northeast will not have a white Christmas. A winter storm that was expected earlier in the week for Christmas Eve into Christmas Day in the Northeast will be delayed by a day, if it makes an appearance at all, according to forecasters referencing government weather data.It doesn't look as dramatic as it did earlier this week, said Bob Haas, a meteorologist with MDA EarthSat Weather in Rockville, Maryland.Cities in the lower Midwest will likely still get snow, but the storm is not expected to arrive in the Northeast, if at all, until Christmas night into Sunday, Haas said. The U.S. Global Forecasting System, a weather prediction model run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, shows the storm remaining mostly offshore and as less of a threat to cities along the Interstate 95 corridor on the East Coast than previous forecasts. The storm right now is more of a threat to the U.S. Gulf Coast cities as light snow or rain. One caveat is the European equivalent of the GFS, which shows the storm moving inland instead of remaining offshore.

In that scenario, snow would start early on Christmas Day around the North Carolina-Virginia border, then make its way up the East Coast toward New England on Saturday and into Sunday.Colder-than-normal temperatures are still expected to linger in the Northeast next week, with the coldest temperatures expected Sunday into Monday.
Temperatures will warm up thereafter. January weather in the Northeast is expected to be variable, with bursts of cold moderated by warmer periods in between, Haas said.(Reporting by Jeanine Prezioso; Editing by Walter Bagley)

Waterlogged California braces for more furious weather
– Wed Dec 22, 3:38 pm ET

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Southern California, already reeling from days of flooding, thunderstorms and tidal surges, braced for even more furious weather Wednesday, as forecasters warned of the arrival of yet another powerful storm.A new weather system, forecast to be the most intense of the past week, was expected to spawn more wind, rain and even small tornadoes in the state, which has suffered an unrelenting barrage of inclement weather.Wednesday's forecast is definitely going to be the main event of an eventful climatological week, Bill Patzert, a specialist at California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.Rainfall was expected to total as much as 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) per hour, which could cause flooding not only in low-lying areas, but in the state's saturated foothills and mountains.Meanwhile, rising flood waters also were causing problems throughout southern California. Local news programs broadcast numerous reports of stranded motorist who had to be plucked from their cars after becoming trapped by raging flash floods.Officials warned residents, particularly those near local creeks and waterways, to take the risk in earnest. This is not a playground. This is no time to do extreme sports, said Jack Wise of the Los Angeles Fire Department.Even six inches (15 centimeters) of water in the flood control channels is enough to wash you down the river... There's nobody to hear you scream, Wise said.

Officials in Los Angeles County order the evacuations of hundreds of homes in the shadow of the denuded San Gabriel Mountains, which recent fires have made bereft of vegetation and where there was a high risk of flooding and landslides. If you fail to comply, it could result in death, Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich said.California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger meanwhile has declared a state of emergency in a half dozen southern California counties because of the storms.Weather officials said the rain would be accompanied by winds between 15 to 25 miles (24 to 40 kilometers) per hour and gusts of up to 65 miles (100 kilometers) per hour.Heavy snows, rain, winds and lower-than-usual temperatures have buffeted the western United States throughout the weekend, hitting Oregon and California especially hard.

In farm-rich central California, floods earlier this week forced 2,000 people from their homes in Kern county, the local fire department reported in a statement.
Meanwhile downtown Los Angeles has seen days of record rainfall, with cascades of water causing power outages across Southern California, mudslides and rock slides in the area's scenic foothills, and closure of parts of the famed Pacific Coast Highway.
The one bright spot was had by the region's winter resorts, where record amounts of snow created a skiers' paradise just in time for the Christmas holiday season.

Strong aftershock hits Japanese islands
– Wed Dec 22, 6:06 pm ET

TOKYO (AFP) – A strong 6.3-magnitude aftershock struck off southern Japan on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, a day after the region was rocked by a major earthquake. The latest jolt to hit the region, following Wednesday's 7.4-magnitude quake, struck at 7:49 am local time (2149 GMT Wednesday), 146 kilometres (91 miles) east of Chichi-shima in Japan's remote Bonin islands region, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury. It was the strongest aftershock since yesterday's earthquake, said Masahide Fujimaru, a village official on Chichi-shima island. But it was not strong enough to make things fall from shelves, Fujimaru told AFP by telephone. There is no confusion and we have not received any information of damage or injuries.Japan's meteorological agency said the latest quake will not create a major, widespread tsunami but warned that there may be some change in sea level in a few hours.Japan's agency has also warned strong aftershocks would continue for the time being in the region.Scores of villagers on the remote Pacific archipelago -- known locally as the Ogasawara islands -- scrambled for higher ground Wednesday after the 7.4 quake sparked a tsunami alert. The seabed tremor struck at 2:19 am, jolting people out of bed as loudspeakers blared across the Ogasawara islands and authorities warned of the risk of a two-metre (six-foot) high local tsunami. The tsunami alert was later downgraded and all warnings were lifted five hours after the quake hit near the islands, some 1,000 kilometres south of Tokyo.

The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks measuring between 5.3 and 5.6 which continued into the morning.About three hours after the quake, a 60-centimetre (two-feet) wave was monitored 700 kilometres away at Hachijo-jima, part of the Izu island chain that runs south of Tokyo, the meteorological agency said.Waves of up to 20 centimetres also reached the southwestern Japanese main islands, the agency said.
The Ogasawara chain, made up of more than 30 subtropical and tropical islets some 240 kilometres north of Iwo Jima, were put under the control of the United States after World War II, and returned to Japan in 1968.The remote islands have preserved their unique biological habitats and have been dubbed the Galapagos of the Orient.Around 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan, which sits on the Ring of Fire surrounding the Pacific Ocean. In 1995 a magnitude-7.2 quake in the port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people. But high building standards, regular drills and a sophisticated tsunami warning system mean that casualties are often minimal.

Hong Kong bird tests positive for bird flu
DEC 22,10

HONG KONG (AFP) – Hong Kong authorities confirmed Thursday that a dead bird found in the southern Chinese territory had tested positive for the H5 strain of the bird flu virus.A government spokeswoman told AFP that laboratory tests had confirmed the highly decomposed chicken carcass found on the seashore of an island in the territory on December 18 carried the deadly strain. In a press release a spokesman said the Hong Kong government was concerned about the incident and will continue to monitor the situation. There were no poultry farms within three kilometres of the shore and there was no evidence of backyard poultry in nearby villages, the statement added. The government will step up inspections of the shore and its immediate vicinity, the statement said.Officials did not raise the city's public health warning on bird flu.

In November, Hong Kong confirmed its first human case of bird flu since 2003, after a 59-year-old woman tested positive for Influenza A (H5), a variant of bird flu.At the time, the government raised its avian influenza alert level to serious, but it has been lowered since.Hong Kong was the site of the world's first major outbreak of bird flu among humans in 1997, when six people died of a mutation of the virus, which is normally confined to poultry.Millions of birds were culled in the 1997 outbreak.Six years later the city was gripped by a full-blown panic when the deadly respiratory disease SARS emerged, killing about 300 people.Public anxiety returned to the city of seven million people last year with an outbreak of swine flu that claimed about 80 lives.

Iraqi churches cancel Christmas festivities By YAHYA BARZANJI and SAMEER N. YACOUB, Associated Press - DEC 22,10

KIRKUK, Iraq – No decorations, no midnight Mass. Even an appearance by Santa Claus has been nixed after Iraq's Christian leaders called off Christmas celebrations amid new al-Qaida threats on the tiny community still terrified from a bloody siege on a Baghdad church.Christians across Iraq have been living in fear since the assault on Our Lady of Salvation Church as its Catholic congregation was celebrating Sunday Mass. Sixty-eight people were killed. Days later Islamic insurgents bombed Christian homes and neighborhoods across the capital. On Tuesday, al-Qaida insurgents threatened more attacks on Iraq's beleaguered Christians, many of whom have fled their homes or the country since the church attack. A council representing Christian denominations across Iraq advised its followers to cancel public celebrations of Christmas out of concern for their lives and as a show of mourning for the victims.

Nobody can ignore the threats of al-Qaida against Iraqi Christians, said Chaldean Archbishop Louis Sako in Kirkuk. We cannot find a single source of joy that makes us celebrate. The situation of the Christians is bleak.Church officials in Baghdad, as well as in the northern cities of Kirkuk and Mosul and the southern city of Basra, said they will not put up Christmas decorations or celebrate midnight Mass. They urged worshippers not to decorate their homes. Even an appearance by Santa Claus was called off. It's to avoid any attacks, but also to show that people are sad, not happy, said Younadim Kanna, a Christian lawmaker from Baghdad.Even before the Oct. 31 church attack, thousands of Christians were fleeing Iraq. They make up more than a third of the 53,700 Iraqis resettled in the United States since 2007, according to State Department statistics.Since the church attack, some 1,000 families have fled to Iraq's safer Kurdish-ruled north, according to the United Nations, which recently warned of a steady exodus of Iraqi Christians. The latest threats were posted late Tuesday by the Islamic State of Iraq, an al-Qaida front group, on a website frequented by Islamic extremists. The group said it wants the release of two women it claims are being held captive by Egypt's Coptic Church.Muslim extremists in Egypt accuse the Coptic Church of detaining the women for allegedly converting to Islam, an accusation the church denies. The message posted Tuesday was addressed to Iraq's Christian community and said it was designed to pressure Egypt.Few reliable statistics exist on the number of Christians remaining in this nation of 29 million. A recent State Department report says Christian leaders estimate there are 400,000 to 600,000, down from a prewar level of some 1.4 million.

For those who remain, Christmas will be a somber affair. In the northern city of Kirkuk, 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of Baghdad, Sako said there will be no Christmas decorations outside churches and a traditional visit by Santa Claus has also been called off. Money usually used on celebrations or gifts will instead go to help Christian refugees.Ashour Binyamin, a 55-year-old Christian from Kirkuk said he and his family would not go to church on Christmas and would celebrate at home.At Baghdad's Our Lady of Salvation Church, where more than 120 parishioners were held hostage by gunmen during the four-hour siege, all Christmas Masses have been canceled. Only a modest manger display will mark the occasion. We have canceled all celebrations in the church, said Father Mukhlis. We are still in deep sorrow over the innocent victims who fell during the evil attack. In Baghdad's Karradah neighborhood, where many of the city's remaining Christians live, churches were guarded by security forces Wednesday and surrounded by razor wire. Shop owners said few people were buying the Christmas trees and Santa Claus toys on sale.Ikhlas Bahnam, a Christian in the neighborhood, vowed to go to Mass on Christmas Day, despite what she called the government's failure to protect her small minority. But she won't be visiting friends during the holiday season because all of them have fled the city.

We did not put any decorations inside or outside our house this year, Bahnam said. We see no reason to celebrate. In Mosul, 225 miles (360 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad, the Rev. Faiz Wadee, a Syrian Orthodox priest, said there will be no public Christmas celebrations there. And Christians in Iraq's second-largest city of Basra have also called off all celebrations, said Saad Matti, a Christian legislator on the Basra provincial council. There will be only a small Mass in one church in Basra without any signs of joy or decoration and under the protection of Iraqi security forces, he said. We are fully aware of al-Qaida threats.Matti said Christians were also toning down their celebrations out of respect for a Shiite holiday going on at the same time. The majority of Iraqis are Shiite Muslims, especially in the south.

Even among Iraqi Christians who've managed to escape the violence, the mood was subdued.Maher Murqous, a Christian from Mosul who fled to neighboring Syria after being threatened by militants, said his relatives are still at risk in Iraq, and since they cannot celebrate, neither will he.We will pray for the sake of Iraq. That's all we can do,he said from his home in Damascus.Yacoub reported from Amman, Jordan. Associated Press writers Sinan Salaheddin and Rebecca Santana in Baghdad and Albert Aji in Damascus, Syria, contributed to this report.

France wants closer euro zone economic policy: report
– Wed Dec 22, 3:40 pm ET

BERLIN (Reuters) – France wants all 16 euro zone governments and any other interested European Union members to coordinate their economic policy more closely in the future, Economy Minister Christine Lagarde told a German newspaper. The crisis showed us that it is not sufficient to limit public debt as foreseen in the Maastricht Treaty. Ireland stuck to these criteria and finds itself nevertheless in difficulty, Lagarde said in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. The EU must not look just at the budgets, it must monitor how the economies in the member states develop.Countries that set out to boost exports and increase investment in a certain sector, for example, would directly affect other EU countries.I don't think it is possible to take away sovereignty over budgets from national states, but we could coordinate with each other already when we are preparing tax legislation. Germany and France plan exactly that - more and more we want to coordinate already when we draft our budget plans for the coming years, she explained.Furthermore, I can also imagine creating an arbitration body (for closer economic policy coordination), Lagarde said.

European countries' diverging tax rates have become a subject of tension. In negotiations on Ireland's EU/IMF bailout last month, France and Germany wanted Ireland's ultra-low corporation tax rate -- long seen by higher-tax European countries as unfair competition -- to be addressed but Dublin made clear the tax rate was non-negotiable.Lagarde, in the interview, acknowledged that all 27 member EU states were unlikely to agree to such a wide-ranging move to coordinate economic policy, with the UK likely to vent fierce opposition, but she said some countries outside the euro zone would be interested.I doubt that a coordinated economic governance would be possible with all 27 states. Great Britain, for example, disagrees entirely on certain things. But that shouldn't hold up all the others, she said.Lagarde rejected the idea of issuing common euro zone bonds -- which some European policymakers and analysts say would help ease market concerns about peripheral euro zone debt -- at least until member states have aligned themselves more closely.Definitely not at present, she said, when asked under what conditions France would support debt jointly issued by all 16 states. Before we introduce euro bonds, we first need a economic governance,(GOVERMENT) she said. She also told the newspaper that the French government was committed to lowering its debt and was currently planning to propose a tax reform prior to presidential elections in 2012.(Reporting by Christiaan Hetzner; Editing by Susan Fenton)

Spain PM: Fixing hurting economy will take 5 years
– Wed Dec 22, 9:21 am ET

MADRID – Spain's prime minister says it will take his nation five years to repair the economic damage caused by Europe's debt crisis and a big real estate boom that went bust.Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told Parliament that Europe's fourth largest economy needs five years to correct the structural imbalances in our economy. Spain has unemployment of nearly 20 percent, with grim growth prospects.Zapatero also said Wednesday that his government will unveil a long-awaited proposal to raise the retirement age from 65 to 67 on Jan 28.He spoke a day after Parliament approved a 2011 austerity budget by a razor-thin margin — a move that likely saved Zapatero his job. Zapatero likely would have had to call early elections if it had not passed.

North Korea response muted to South's planned drills By Yoo Choonsik and Sylvia Westall - DEC 22,10

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea criticized major land and sea military exercises to be staged by the South on Thursday, but stopped short of threatening a retaliatory strike as tension remained high on the divided peninsula. In a show of military might, South Korea will hold a major.land drill in the Pocheon region, between Seoul and the heavily armed demilitarised zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas. It will also continue naval live-fire exercises 100 km (60 miles) south of the maritime border with North Korea. The drill, involving a larger scale of firepower and personnel than usual for such an exercise at an army training ground, is an indication that conservative President Lee Myung-bak wants to underscore his renewed determination to stand tough against the North. He has replaced his top defense officials with more hawkish military men, a response to criticism of a perceived weak response to hostile acts from the North, including a submarine attack in March and the shelling of an island last month. We're keeping up the alert, a Defense Ministry official said on the condition of anonymity. There may have been some adjustments to readiness posture but we are still on top alert.A large contingent of mechanized units operating tanks, three dozen self-propelled artillery, fighter jets and multiple rocket launchers, were set to stage the live-fire drill starting at 0500GMT just miles from the border with the North.

(South Korea) is trying to hide the provocative nature toward the North of the war exercises, Pyongyang's official KCNA news agency said in a comment issued in the form of a news dispatch rather than in the name of any government organization. The South Korean Army is making no secret that the drill is aimed at displaying its firepower to its neighbor.Yes, it will be a show of force against that, an army officer said on Wednesday, when asked if the shelling of South Korea's Yeonpyeong island last month was a factor, although he said similar drills had been staged before.Seoul's financial markets were little moved in early trade as investors kept a close eye on how North Korea will react to the drills, although the North's threatening remarks had in the past failed to have a lasting effect.

DISPUTED WATERS

The North's reaction was relatively calm in comparison with its threats of a retaliatory strike made as recently as last week ahead of Monday's live-firing drill on Yeonpyeong, in disputed waters off the west coast of the peninsula. Its official Rodong Sinmun newspaper accused the United States of conspiring with the South and Japan to bring war to the Korean peninsula. The Korean peninsula has turned sharply unstable on the brink of war due to scheming by the U.S. to militarily stifle the North, the commentary said.Analysts say the North is unlikely, in the near-term at least, to launch a further attack against the South like last month's shelling of Yeonpyeong or the sinking in March of the Cheonan warship. The South accuses North Korea of sinking the vessel, though the North denies involvement. For now, the North is likely to wait and see if its latest actions, including an offer to readmit international nuclear inspectors, yield results, such as a return to international talks on Pyongyang's nuclear programme. The White House said on Wednesday it did not expect the military exercises to trigger a North Korean response. Exercises that have been announced well in advance, that are transparent, that are defensive in nature, should in no way engender a response from the North Koreans, spokesman Robert Gibbs said. But some say South Korea should not be complacent because the North will probably strike again when the conditions are right. The North Korean leaders did not duck the fight this time because they were afraid, Andrei Lankov at Kookmin University in Seoul wrote in Financial Times earlier this week referring to the Monday's drills.Rather, they did what a cold-minded tactician should do: they avoided an engagement under unfavorable conditions chosen by the opponent, in order to strike the opponent at the time and place of their own choice, suddenly and forcefully.(Additional reporting by Jack Kim; Editing by Alex Richardson)

SKorea holds massive new drills after North attack By HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press - DEC 22,10

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea on Thursday mobilized hundreds of troops, tanks, helicopters and jet fighters for a massive military exercise aimed at sending North Korea a message of strength amid high tensions on the peninsula. The firing drills set for later in the day near the Koreas' heavily armed land border signaled that South Korea is willing to risk further escalating tensions with North Korea, which shelled a southern island off the Koreas' western coast on Nov. 23, killing four South Koreans and stirring fears of war.The attack was portrayed by Pyongyang as a retaliation for southern military exercises on Yeonpyeong island that day.South Korea has conducted 47 military drills this year similar to the one planned for Thursday, which was scheduled in response to the North Korean attack, an army officer said on condition of anonymity citing department rules. Thursday's drill will be the biggest-ever wintertime joint firing exercise that South Korea's army and air force have staged, an army statement said.We will completely punish the enemy if it provokes us again like the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, Brig. Gen. Ju Eun-sik, chief of the army's 1st armored brigade, said separately.

South Korean forces are on high alert even though the North backed down from its threat to again retaliate over a separate firing drill the South held Monday on Yeonpyeong in disputed western waters. The two Koreas remain technically at war since their 1950s conflict ended in a cease-fire, not a peace treaty. The past month's military tension, however, has been the worst in several years. The North has made conciliatory remarks in recent days — telling a visiting U.S. governor it might allow international inspections of its nuclear programs — but Seoul is mindful of past surprise attacks and still is bracing for possible aggression. The White House dismissed concern that South Korea's exercises could lead to any escalation of the situation.I think exercises that have been announced well in advance, that are transparent, that are defensive in nature, should in no way engender a response from the North Koreans, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a briefing on Wednesday.South Korea's navy also began annual four-day firing and anti-submarine exercises Wednesday off the country's eastern coast. That area has been less tense recently but in the past, the North has used eastern waters as a submarine route for communist agents to infiltrate South Korea. The Koreas' recent military skirmishes, including last month's artillery bombardment, have been in the tense western waters, where Pyongyang does not recognize the U.N.-drawn border.Thursday's air force and army drills will involve 800 troops, F-15K and KF-16 jet fighters, K-1 tanks, AH-1S attack helicopters and K-9 self-propelled guns. They will take place in Pocheon, about 30 miles (45 kilometers) north of Seoul and about 21 miles (33 kilometers) south of the North Korean border.

Seoul has relocated more artillery on Yeonpyeong island following last month's shelling and plans to deploy Israeli-made Spike missiles there soon, Yonhap news agency reported, citing an unidentified military official. The Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to confirm the report.North Korea, meanwhile, indicated to visiting New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that it was prepared to consider ways to work with the South on restoring security along the border.Richardson praised Pyongyang for refraining from retaliation and said his visit to the North provided an opening for a resumption of negotiations aimed at dismantling North Korea's nuclear program. North Korea pulled out of six-nation talks to provide Pyongyang with aid in exchange for disarmament in April 2009, but since has said it is willing to resume them. The White House, however, rejected the idea, saying Pyongyang needed to change its belligerent behavior first and was not even remotely ready for negotiations. In Seoul, a senior South Korean government official said the military would remain prepared for the possibility of a surprise attack in coming days. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Separately, about 200 South Koreans attended a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening for the four South Koreans killed by North Korea's attack on the Yeonpyeong. They observed a moment of silence and placed flowers on a makeshift mourning site in central Seoul. We, the survivors, should remember their sacrifice and make efforts to ensure that their sacrifice will not be in vain, said Choi Hong-jae, a 42-year-old executive. Associated Press writers Jean H. Lee, Foster Klug and Kim Kwang-tae in Seoul, Lee Jin-man in Gimpo, South Korea, and Mark S. Smith in Washington contributed to this report.
