UK cable in 1980 said Israel ready to use bomb
– Thu Dec 30, 12:59 pm ET

LONDON (Reuters) – A British ambassador to Israel warned as early as 1980 that Israel would detonate a nuclear bomb in case of a new war with the Arabs, according to previously secret state documents released on Thursday. If they (Israelis) are to be destroyed, they will go down fighting this time. They will be ready to use their atomic weapon, ambassador John Robinson wrote in a cable to the Foreign Office on May 4, 1980.Israel has never confirmed or denied having atom bombs under a policy of ambiguity to deter numerically superior foes.Robinson's message, published under a rule that allows official British papers to be released after 30 years, voiced concern that U.S.-hosted negotiations would not lead to a comprehensive agreement on the Middle East conflict. As long as there is no agreement on the West Bank and Jerusalem which satisfies the Palestinians, they will be driven increasingly to extremism; moderate governments in the area and Western interest will be increasingly threatened; opportunities for Soviet influence and intervention will increase; and so will the danger of a new war, the cable said. JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all,(WORLD SOCIALISM) both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

EU ratchets up sanctions on Ivory Coast
LEIGH PHILLIPS 30.12.2010 @ 08:34 CET

European Union diplomats on Wednesday (29 December) agreed that member states would only recognise representatives of the Ivory Coast appointed by the widely acknowledged winner of the country's recent elections, Alassane Ouattara. The move aims to ratchet up pressure on incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo to step down.November presidential elections, already postponed since 2005, indicated a victory for Mr Ouattara of 54 percent of votes in a second round. However, the ruling social democratic Ivorian Popular Front of President Gbago contested the results and claimed to be a victim of electoral fraud.International observers rejected the claims and Mr Ouattara, a liberal and former International Monetary Fund economist, has been recognised as the victor by the EU, the UN, and the African Union. The Ivory Coast's membership of the AU has been suspended as a result of Mr Gbago's refusal to accept the results of the election.Ambassadors from the bloc's 27 states on Wednesday also approved an expansion of a list of Ivorians banned from travelling to the EU, including key supporters and government and military officials. The EU sanctions follow initial travel restrictions slapped on Mr Gbago and 18 members of his coterie agreed by European foreign ministers on 13 December.

The full travel ban list now totals 61 figures.

Additionally on Wednesday, Ivorian expatriates entered their country's embassy in the European capital and attempted to remove portraits of the incumbent leader. An asset freeze and support for the United Nation's existing peacekeeping force in the country were also discussed by EU diplomats.

Soldier Attacked at Entrance to Kiryat Arba
by Elad Benari DEC 31,10

An Israeli soldier was attacked and wounded by Arabs on Thursday evening at the entrance to Kiryat Arba.According to reports, the Arabs hit the soldier with various objects and threw a glass bottle at him, injuring him in the head. The assailants were arrested and turned over to the police for questioning.Following the incident, Kiryat Arba local council members Bentzi Gofshtein and Yisrael Bramson called on the IDF to close Tzir Tzion (Zion Road) to Arab traffic. Don’t force us, the residents, to close the road, they said.Tzir Tzion, the road leading from Kiryat Arba to Hevron, was reopened to Arab traffic last summer, upsetting Jewish residents of Hevron and Kiryat Arba who warned that opening the road will lead to murder. The opening of the road, as well as the removal of dozens of other checkpoints, was done as part of Israel’s good-will gestures to the Palestinian Authority.Earlier on Thursday, Arab terrorists opened fire towards the community of Horesh Yaron in Binyamin. No one was hurt. IDF soldiers were searching for the shooters.

Thursday’s incidents occurred after the Israel Security Agency released its annual report which said that there was an overall decrease in the number of terror attacks against Israel in 2010, compared to 2009.The report said that there were 798 recorded terror attacks by Arabs in 2010, down from about 1,354 in 2009. Nine people were murdered by terrorists in 2010, and none of the terror attacks were suicide bombings. The total number of shooting and explosive attacks in Judea and Samaria in 2010 was 32, just one less than the previous year.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Chabad Rabbis Beef Up Jewish Presence in Debrecen
by Hana Levi Julian DEC 31,10

A delegation of Chassidic rabbis met this week with Hungarian President Pal Schmitt to talk about ways to fight anti-Semitism in the former Communist country. The Chabad-Lubavitch world movement, known for its international outreach to fellow Jews, is opening a new branch in the city of Debrecen as part of the effort to increase Jewish education and beef up Jewish identity. Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Lubavitch World Headquarters met with President Schmitt in an hour-long discussion together with a delegation from the local Jewish community. Here, Schmitt affirmed following the meeting, [Chabad] always has an open door.Kotlarsky was in the country to mark the appointment of an eighth team of emissaries to join seven others who already are working in the country, all of whom are based in Budapest. Rabbi Shmuel Feigin and his wife Rivkah, both Israelis, are slated to open the new branch in Debrecen, Hungary's second-largest city after Budapest.Home to approximately 4,000 Jews, Debrecen also plays host to some 1,000 Israeli students who attend the medical school there.Who would have thought that from the ashes of the Holocaust and the suppressive Communist regime, Jews would once more gather in the Obuda synagogue, he told Lubavitch.com. He described the reemergence of Jewish life in the country as a spiritual renaissance.

During World War II, the city was nearly leveled, with 70 percent of its buildings suffering damage, and at least half of them completely destroyed. After the war, Debrecen became the capital of Hungary for a short time as citizens began to rebuild, until the country was taken over by a Communist regime. The addition of Rabbi Feigin and his wife was announced at a special banquet held at the synagogue, the oldest standing Jewish house of worship in Hungary. The Obuda was recently renovated with a grant from the Rohr Family Foundation.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Massive storm blankets central US
– Thu Dec 30, 6:37 pm ET

CHICAGO (AFP) – A massive storm system blanketed the central United States on Thursday, whipping up blinding blizzards and dangerously frigid temperatures. The storm stretched from New Mexico to Minnesota and was expected to continue to dump heavy snow on the region on Friday and Saturday as it made its way slowly north into Canada. We're expecting almost a one-two punch across the middle part of the country over the next two days, said Bob Oravec, a forecaster with the National Weather Service (NWS).You might find localized areas that get as much as 18 inches (46 centimeters) of snow. The storm came as much of the northeast was still digging out from one of its worst blizzards in decades.Back to back storms are pretty typical for this time of year, said NWS forecaster Bob Oravec.Once the large scale pattern sets up you can be very stormy and have one after another, he told AFP.

White-out conditions led to a massive pile-up on a Fargo, North Dakota freeway involving about 100 vehicles, local media reported. At least two people were taken to hospital and rescue crews had trouble getting to all the cars and trucks because the road was such a mess of jumbled vehicles.Highways were closed across the eastern part of the state and officials warned people to stay off the roads whenever possible.Visibility is zero. Roads are glare ice, North Dakota Highway Patrol Sergeant Dave Wolf told The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead.If you have to stop quick, you're sliding.Highways in the Arizona mountains were also closed, but not before about 150 people got stranded and needed to be rescued, the Arizona Daily Sun reported.A sudden blizzard in southern New Mexico caused havoc on the roads as many people went home early ahead of the New Year's holiday weekend.Everything is really, really slick so we are discouraging people from traveling,Police Captain Terry Thortonberry told the Silver City Sun-News.

Storms dump heavy rain, snow on parts of West By FELICIA FONSECA, Associated Press - DEC 30,10

BELLEMONT, Ariz. – A winter storm pummeled the western U.S. on Thursday with fierce wind gusts, heavy rain and more than 2 feet of snow, closing hundreds of miles of roads and dumping a snowy mix of precipitation on the edges of Phoenix.Officials closed a road into Yosemite National Park in California after a rock the size of a dump truck tumbled onto the road, and strong winds created snow dunes on rooftops, front yards and streets across mountainous areas of Arizona.Snow and ice forced an hours-long closure of the two major thoroughfares in northern Arizona, stranding motorists south of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. People in Phoenix were stunned at the sight of snow-type flurries that the National Weather Service said were a combination of hail and snow that melts before it hits the ground.Drivers wanting to know how to get around the storms overwhelmed an Arizona hotline that provides automated updates on road conditions. State Department of Transportation spokesman Timothy Tait said the line took in 1.2 million calls in a 12-hour span Thursday.

Dorothy Brooks, of Dallas, was creeping along Interstate 40 at 20 mph on her way to Las Vegas, passing vehicles stuck on the side of the road, when she pulled into a Bellemont gas station to wait out the storm. It's devastating, she said, above the cry of a 9-month-old baby she was pushing through the aisles. You can't call Mother Nature anyway. You never know when she's going to burst out.The Silverton Mountain resort in Colorado reported 22 inches of snow, but only about 120 people were on the mountain because officials closed highways leading to the ski area for avalanche control and because of adverse conditions, resort co-founder Jen Brill said.R.A. Burrell, of Colorado Springs, left home around 3 a.m. to avoid getting stuck on the way to the extreme ski area and made it before the lift started running.I thought we'd really just come on a magical day, which is what it turned out to be,he said during a break from making turns. We just got lucky. The weather service said snow could fall at a rate close to an inch an hour starting Thursday evening in the Denver area, which usually has around 25 inches of snow by this time of the season but had just 1.5 inches so far.

United Airlines, the dominant carrier at Denver International Airport, canceled 32 United and United Express flights from Denver on Thursday, spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said.Major highways were also shut down in parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Nevada.Forecasters said strong winds in California were expected to die down by early Friday, allowing a cold air mass to create frost and freeze problems in the region.Phoenix braced for freezing overnight temperatures as well, a rarity in the desert city. Inmates housed at the city's Tent City jail facility were being issued extra blankets and pink thermal underwear — part of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's odd method for punishing prisoners.Residents in the Phoenix area couldn't believe what they were seeing when white stuff starting falling from the sky. The wintry mixture of snow and hail had the appearance of snowflakes.Believe it or not, but I am looking out my window in Scotttsdale, Az & its SNOWING! Never thought I would see this! former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner tweeted.Southwestern New Mexico was being hit with blizzard conditions that were forecast to continue through midnight Thursday. Winds of up to 65 mph, heavy snow and rapidly falling temperatures made travel difficult if not impossible, forecasters said. The California Highway Patrol reported downed trees on various Los Angeles-area freeways and streets. One gust north of Los Angeles was clocked at 94 mph. Authorities in Kern County called off an evacuation of 120 homes after an irrigation canal overflowed with rain runoff. Fewer than six homes were damaged.

In the snow-laden Sierra Nevada, search teams found the body of a woman who disappeared while snowboarding at a Lake Tahoe-area resort, sheriff's Capt. Jeff Ausnow said. Shawnte Marie Willis, 25, became separated from friends Tuesday at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, and bad weather had hindered the search. Icy roads led to a collision on U.S. 50 in Nevada, killing a 26-year-old woman whose car spun out of control and into the path of an oncoming Hummer, the Nevada Highway Patrol said. The Coast Guard called off a search after finding no sign of a 20-foot boat reported in trouble in rough seas off San Diego late Wednesday. A call picked up by a sea salvage company reported a man and three children aboard a boat taking on water. Eric Lamb, a captain at the company, said it may have been a hoax.A camping Boy Scout troop had to be rescued after a snowstorm stranded them near Pocatello, Idaho. The seven boys and three adults had planned to spend Tuesday night at Lariat Cave but were unable to get out, Power County Sheriff Jim Jeffries said. They called for help Wednesday morning and responders brought them out by snowmobile several hours later.Gordon Mason of Rockford, Ill., was taking it all in stride. The 62-year-old semi-truck driver was browsing through movies at a travel center in Arizona, grateful that something was open to occupy his time. The way the lot is, it's going to take a while to clear the trucks so the rest of us could get out, he said. I'm not even going to try until tomorrow.Managers at the travel center ensured their employees would be available to serve stranded motorists by renting hotel rooms for them next door.Contributing to this report were Associated Press writers Catherine Tsai in Denver, John Antczak and Robert Jablon in Los Angeles, Garance Burke in Fresno, Gillian Flaccus in Orange County, Haven Daley in Sonoma County and Sudhin Thanawala and Terry Collins in San Francisco.

Two dead, thousands evacuated in Philippines rains
– Wed Dec 29, 11:57 pm ET

LEGASPI (AFP) – Two people were killed and about 4,000 forced to flee their homes as monsoon rains brought flash floods and landslides to the region southeast of the Philippine capital, officials said Thursday. An 80-year-old woman and her 50-year-old son were swept away by rushing waters as they crossed a spillway to reach an evacuation centre late Wednesday, said Joey Salceda, governor of the affected province of Albay. We evacuated them early in the morning but apparently the old woman and her son returned home to get some personal belongings. Before twilight, they were returning to the evacuation centre and got stuck on the spillway, Salceda said.Heavy rain continued to fall on Albay and other parts of the Bicol region for the sixth straight day, increasing the danger of landslides and floods and forcing more people to be moved out of their homes, Salceda told AFP.The government had begun evacuating people from areas prone to flooding and landslides as early as December 24, he said. But more people will likely be moved as the weather bureau forecasts rain until January 2, the governor added. We are right now transferring a whole village -- 533 people -- to an evacuation site, Salceda said. Some villagers insist on returning to their houses to watch over their property or get personal items despite the danger, the governor said. The Albay government was preparing a New Year celebration for the evacuees, consisting of food and entertainment, to convince them not to leave evacuation centres, he said.

200,000 people affected by flooding in Australia
– DEC 30,10

BRISBANE, Australia – More than 200,000 people have been affected by relentless flooding in northeast Australia, with the flood zone now stretching over an area bigger than France and Germany combined, officials said Friday.Thousands of homes and businesses across Queensland state have been inundated with water after days of pounding rain caused swollen rivers to overflow. The entire population of two towns was forced to evacuate as water swamped their communities, cutting off roads and devastating crops.Northeastern Australia often sees heavy rains and flooding during the Southern Hemisphere summer, but the scope of the damage from the recent downpours is extremely unusual, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said. This is without a doubt a tragedy on an unprecedented scale, Bligh told Australian Broadcasting Corp. We now have 22 towns or cities that are either substantially flooded or isolated because the roads have been cut off to them. That represents some 200,000 people spanning an area that's bigger than the size of France and Germany combined.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes this week. In the central Queensland town of Emerald, around 1,000 people were evacuated in the last 24 hours.
The town was facing the prospect of food shortages, power outages and sewage-contaminated floodwaters, county mayor Peter Maguire said. Three evacuation centers have been set up to help displaced residents.Weather across most of the state was drier on Friday, but river levels were still rising in some areas.Bligh warned that drenched communities could be stuck under water for more than a week, and cleanup efforts were expected to cost billions of dollars.Rockhampton, a city near Queensland's coast, was bracing for a deluge of river water heading its way. Roads and railway lines were expected to be cut off by Saturday, and the city's airport planned to shut down over the weekend.Officials were evacuating residents on Friday, starting with the elderly and those living in low-lying areas. There were concerns over food supplies in the city, with many stores already sold out of bread, milk and fresh meat, Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carter said.Gary Boyer, regional manager of supermarket chain Woolworths, said the company was sending 43 trucks full of supplies into Rockhampton on Friday.

Queensland launched a disaster relief fund for flood victims with 1 million Australian dollars ($1 million) in state money. Prime Minister Julia Gillard pledged to match that amount with federal funds.Gillard was touring flooded communities on Friday, and planned to stop in Rockhampton later in the day.Earlier, she toured the city of Bundaberg, where about 60 people have taken shelter at an evacuation center.
Resident Sandy Kiddle told Gillard she lost cherished items after floodwaters surged through her house, and may not be able to return home for a week.It was just a sea of water and I thought the beach would never come to our house, she told Gillard, who gave her a hug.

Wall Street edges lower as year draws to a close
By Ryan Vlastelica - DEC 30,2010

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Thursday as a trio of better-than-expected economic data wasn't enough to entice buyers to take on much risk in a market sitting on strong gains just before the new year. The S&P 500 is up 6.5 percent so far this month, putting it on track for the best December since 1991.

Reports on the labor market, business activity and housing all showed surprising strength.New U.S. claims for initial unemployment benefits in the latest week dropped to the lowest level since July 2008, while a report from the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest rose to its highest level since July 1988. November pending home sales also rose more than anticipated. The numbers were very strong this morning, but people are becoming more cautious since it's the end of the year, especially since we've already had a great run, said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank in Cleveland, Ohio.Monster Worldwide Inc (MWW.N), an employment agency, rose 2.1 percent to $24.12 after the jobless data. The Dow Jones U.S. business training and employment agencies index (.DJUSBE) rose 0.3 percent. In a sign of investor anticipation of increased merger activity, Anadarko Petroleum Corp (APC.N) jumped 6.9 percent to $75.59 after the UK's Daily Mail reported BHP Billiton Ltd (BHP.AX) (BHP.N) may be lining up a $90 per share offer for the company. The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 15.67 points, or 0.14 percent, at 11,569.71. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was down 1.86 points, or 0.15 percent, at 1,257.92. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 3.95 points, or 0.15 percent, at 2,662.98.

Technical indicators such as the S&P 500's relative strength index and elevated levels of bullishness are leading some investors to call for a pullback.Though many predict stocks will pull back in January, Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Equity Markets in Jersey City, New Jersey, does not see that happening until February. The common sense of the street is that we get pullback after this Santa Claus rally and a very strong run-up in the S&P since August, he said. But I don't think it will be in early January because everybody is expecting it.The S&P is up more than 14 percent since August, contributing to a reluctance to make large bets as light volume leaves the market more susceptible to volatility.February crude futures fell 1.9 percent to $89.35 per barrel after the latest U.S. inventory data, though the drop had little impact on energy companies.(Editing by Leslie Adler)

Dollar share of world reserves slips, total rises
– Thu Dec 30, 11:05 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The dollar's share of known global currency reserves slipped in the third quarter, while total central bank holdings hit a record $9 trillion, International Monetary Fund data showed on Thursday.Between July and September, the U.S. dollar's share of the roughly $5 trillion of world reserves of which the composition is known fell to 61.3 percent from 62.1 percent in the prior quarter.

Overall reserve accumulation rose for a sixth straight quarter, soaring to a record $9 trillion as of September 30. The composition of roughly $3 trillion of that is unknown but thought to be heavily concentrated in U.S. dollars. The euro saw a modest boost in its share of known reserves to 26.9 percent from 26.5 percent and the yen's share rose to 3.6 percent from 3.3 percent.Central banks have long been underweight the yen in their reserve portfolios. The share of other currencies, which excludes the dollar, euro, yen, sterling and Swiss franc, rose to 4 percent from 3.8 percent in the second quarter of 2010.Interest has grown in currencies such as the Australian and Canadian dollars, which have risen in value this year along with commodity prices, and some central banks have talked of increasing allocation to these currencies as well as the yen.In the third quarter of 2009, the share of other currencies in known global reserves stood at 2.9 percent.Valuation effects were also responsible for some of the allocation shift; the U.S. dollar lost more than 11 percent against the euro and about 5.5 percent against the yen in the third quarter of this year.Worries about a euro-zone sovereign debt crisis eased in the third quarter, resurfacing only in November, while falling U.S. bond yields pushed the dollar down against the yen.(Editing by Padraic Cassidy)

Researchers: Ancient human remains found in Israel By DANIEL ESTRIN, Associated Press – Mon Dec 27, 6:13 pm ET
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101227/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_israel_ancient_teeth (PICT)

JERUSALEM – Israeli archaeologists said Monday they may have found the earliest evidence yet for the existence of modern man, and if so, it could upset theories of the origin of humans.A Tel Aviv University team excavating a cave in central Israel said teeth found in the cave are about 400,000 years old and resemble those of other remains of modern man, known scientifically as Homo sapiens, found in Israel. The earliest Homo sapiens remains found until now are half as old. It's very exciting to come to this conclusion, said archaeologist Avi Gopher, whose team examined the teeth with X-rays and CT scans and dated them according to the layers of earth where they were found. He stressed that further research is needed to solidify the claim. If it does, he says, this changes the whole picture of evolution. The accepted scientific theory is that Homo sapiens originated in Africa and migrated out of the continent. Gopher said if the remains are definitively linked to modern human's ancestors, it could mean that modern man in fact originated in what is now Israel.

Sir Paul Mellars, a prehistory expert at Cambridge University, said the study is reputable, and the find is important because remains from that critical time period are scarce, but it is premature to say the remains are human.Based on the evidence they've cited, it's a very tenuous and frankly rather remote possibility, Mellars said. He said the remains are more likely related to modern man's ancient relatives, the Neanderthals.According to today's accepted scientific theories, modern humans and Neanderthals stemmed from a common ancestor who lived in Africa about 700,000 years ago. One group of descendants migrated to Europe and developed into Neanderthals, later becoming extinct. Another group stayed in Africa and evolved into Homo sapiens — modern humans.Teeth are often unreliable indicators of origin, and analyses of skull remains would more definitively identify the species found in the Israeli cave, Mellars said.Gopher, the Israeli archaeologist, said he is confident his team will find skulls and bones as they continue their dig.The prehistoric Qesem cave was discovered in 2000, and excavations began in 2004. Researchers Gopher, Ran Barkai and Israel Hershkowitz published their study in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Russia accuses West of meddling in Khodorkovsky trial By Alexei Anishchuk and Maria Tsvetkova - DEC 28,10

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia accused the United States and Europe on Tuesday of trying to influence the trial of jailed former tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, calling such efforts unacceptable and warning the West to mind its own business.Moscow's angry message came as Khodorkovsky, whose imprisonment has been a bone of contention between Russia and the West for years, awaited a new sentence that could keep him in jail until 2017 after being found guilty of theft.Prosecutors are seeking an additional six-year prison term for Khodorkovsky, the former Yukos oil company CEO who is 10 months from the end of an eight-year sentence imposed after a previous trial during Vladimir Putin's presidency.Attempts to apply pressure on the court are unacceptable, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, responding to U.S. and EU criticism aired on Monday after Khodorkovsky was found guilty of multi-billion-dollar theft and money laundering. We are counting on everyone to mind his own business -- both at home and in the international arena, it said.In the second trial, prosecutors said Khodorkovsky stole $27 billion in oil from Yukos subsidiaries through pricing schemes and laundered some of the money, charges he called absurd.Western officials said the guilty verdict raised doubts about the Kremlin's commitment to the rule of law and human rights, and warned they were closely watching the case. The Russian ministry said the trial was a matter for Russia's courts and rejected U.S. suggestions that the verdict resulted from selective justice as groundless. The warning suggested the outcome of Khodorkovsky's second trial could cause friction with Europe and strain the reset that has improved ties between the United States and Russia. It echoed accusations of Western meddling during Putin's 2000-2008 presidency, when Russia bristled at frequent U.S. and EU criticism.Trial judge Viktor Danilkin edged toward sentencing Khodorkovsky, who has been in jail since 2003, plowing through a lengthy guilty verdict against the tycoon and his business partner Platon Lebedev.Danilkin is expected to hand down the sentence sometime this week when he finishes reading out the verdict.Khodorkovsky's defense team has alleged government pressure on the judge and vowed to appeal. One of the young tycoons who built fortunes after the Soviet Union's 1991 collapse, Khodorkovsky fell out with Putin's Kremlin after airing corruption allegations, challenging state control over oil exports and funding opposition parties.Putin is now prime minister but remains Russia's most powerful man. His successor, Dmitry Medvedev, has made freeing Russia's courts of political influence and corruption, along with modernizing the economy, two of the top goals of his presidency.Police blocked the streets within 100 meters of Moscow's Khamovnichesky court on Tuesday, a day after hundreds of protesters gathered outside, calling for Khodorkovsky's release and shouting Shame!. Police detained about 30 demonstrators.A harsh sentence in Khodorkovsky's second trial would draw further criticism of Medvedev, the protege Putin steered into the presidency in 2008 when he ran up against a constitutional limit of two straight Kremlin terms.

MEDVEDEV'S AGENDA

Medvedev has courted U.S. and EU support for modernization, putting on a more pleasant face than Putin often showed to foreign powers in his presidency and traveling to California's Silicon Valley in search of ideas for innovation. He signed a major nuclear arms limitation treaty with President Barack Obama in April, the centerpiece of a drive to improve ties between the Cold War foes.Reacting on Monday to a verdict she said raised serious concerns about the rule of law being overshadowed by political considerations, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said independent courts were necessary for modernization. We welcome President Medvedev's modernization plans, but their fulfillment requires the development of a climate where due process and judicial independence are respected,Clinton said. The EU expressed concern, and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called the developments highly alarming and a step backward for the country on its road toward modernization.Medvedev is struggling to show significant results on his reform initiatives as a 2012 presidential election approaches.Putin has said he and Medvedev will decide together on a Kremlin candidate for the vote, but many Russians believe Putin will ultimately make the choice. The two leaders set conflicting tones in the days before the verdict's delivery, with Putin telling the nation Khodorkovsky had blood on his hands and Medvedev stressing that no official should comment in advance of the verdict. After Khodorkovsky's 2003 arrest, Yukos was bankrupted by back-tax claims and its top assets sold to the state, deepening Western concerns over property rights and the rule of law.(Additional reporting by Gleb Bryanski and Alissa de Carbonnel; writing by Steve Gutterman; editing by David Stamp)

Iran says West hostility jeopardizes nuclear talks
– Tue Dec 28, 5:52 am ET

TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that the West's hostile policies could harm further talks over the country's disputed nuclear program. The warning delivered in a speech at the northern Iranian city of Karaj came as Iran and the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, as well as Germany, are set to engage in another round of talks in Istanbul in late January. If you take an action that is a continuation of the previous path, this will make the job difficult. It will close the road (to dialogue), he said in the live TV broadcast. Cooperation benefits all. We do not expect them to take actions that are hostile. The U.N. Security Council imposed a fourth and tougher round of sanctions on Iran in June after Tehran refused to halt its disputed nuclear program.Ahmadinejad, however, asserted during the speech that sanctions have only strengthened Iran.Iran held a first round of talks with officials from the U.S., China, Russia, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union in Geneva earlier this month. The U.S. and its allies suspect Iran is pursuing weapons under cover of its nuclear program. Iran denies the charge.

Abbas Fatah faction bans former leader from meetings
- DEC 28,10

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) – The Western-backed Palestinian Fatah faction has banned from meetings a former leader, once considered a possible successor to President Mahmoud Abbas, an official news agency reported Tuesday.Mohammed Dahlan, for years Fatah's strong-man in the Gaza Strip, was banned from attending faction meetings, the WAFA news agency reported, saying only that he was being investigated by the group's highest decision-making body.Dahlan first fell from grace in 2007 when Hamas Islamists routed Fatah forces to take control of the Gaza Strip. As security chief, Dahlan had been charged with keeping Fatah dominant in the coastal territory.A senior Fatah official said the investigation revolves around Dahlan's financial assets and accusations of incitement against Abbas.Palestinian officials, speaking anonymously, have said Dahlan had publicly spoken poorly of Abbas's sons and had criticized the Palestinian president, going as far as to call for his replacement.Dahlan, who could not be reached for comment, was also ousted from his position of commissioner of Fatah media and is being replaced by a long-standing Abbas spokesman.Prior to the ban, Abbas had ordered security guards to be removed from Dahlan's office and house in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Since then, Dahlan has spent more time abroad.(Writing by Mohammed Assadi; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Radical Nigerian Muslim group claims attacks By AHMED MOHAMMED, Associated Press - DEC 28,10

JOS, Nigeria – A radical Muslim sect has claimed responsibility for the Christmas Eve bombings and church attacks in Nigeria that killed at least 38 people, and the group threatened new attacks to avenge local violence against Muslims.Religious fighting has left more than 500 people dead this year in the deeply divided region where Jos is located. Authorities had already blamed the Boko Haram group for some of the deaths Friday, but the online statement attributed to the group was the first solid connection between the violence in two cities. Therefore we will continue with our attacks on disbelievers and their allies and all those who help them, the statement said.It was not immediately possible to contact members of the sect, which had not previously used the website where the statement appeared. The head of national police Yemi Ajayi also said Tuesday that authorities were still investigating.

Two bombs went off near a large market in Jos where people were doing last-minute Christmas shopping Friday. A third hit a mainly Christian area of Jos, while the fourth was near a road that leads to the city's main mosque.Officials initially said at least 32 died from the blasts, and police have not updated that figure publicly.
An official with the National Emergency Management Agency told journalists that he had counted 80 deaths, but the regional NEMA coordinator said only three hospitals were visited. It was not verified whether the patients counted were in fact blast victims, said the regional NEMA coordinator, Alhassan Aliyu Danjuma. That same day, two churches were attacked in the northern city of Maiduguri about 320 miles (520 kilometers) away, killing at least six people. Nigerian authorities blamed Boko Haram, and said a Baptist pastor and two choir members preparing for a late-night carol service were among the victims. The radical Muslim sect is also known by a much longer Arabic name, which means the organization of followers of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and champions of Islam and holy wars.It was thought to be vanquished in 2009 after Nigeria's military crushed its mosque into concrete shards, and its leader was arrested and died in police custody. But now, a year later, Maiduguri and surrounding villages again live in fear of the group, whose members have assassinated police and local leaders and engineered a massive prison break, officials say. Western diplomats worry that the sect is catching the attention of al-Qaida's North Africa branch.

While religious violence in the central city of Jos and neighboring towns and villages has claimed more than 500 lives this year, the fighting has not typically been linked to Boko Haram.Nigeria, a country of 150 million people, is almost evenly split between Muslims in the north and the predominantly Christian south. Jos is in the nation's middle belt, where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of fertile lands. The Jos violence, though fractured across religious lines, often has more to do with local politics, economics and rights to grazing lands. The government of Plateau state, where Jos is the capital, is controlled by Christian politicians who have blocked Muslims from being legally recognized as citizens. That has locked many out of prized government jobs in a region where the tourism industry and tin mining have collapsed in the last decades.Associated Press Writer Njadvara Musa contributed from Maiduguri, Nigeria.

Floods force evacuations in eastern Australia
by Madeleine Coorey – Tue Dec 28, 5:53 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Military helicopters were called in Tuesday to help evacuate hundreds of Australians stranded by rising floodwaters, as entire towns were inundated by the worst deluges in parts of the region in decades.Torrential rains following in the wake of tropical cyclone Tasha, which last week crossed into the northeastern state of Queensland before quickly fading, have swollen rivers and flooded scores of farms and homes in the state. Some towns saw their worst floods in 50 years, including Theodore some 400 kilometres (250 miles) northwest of Brisbane, which has been cut off for two days and whose 350 residents were being evacuated by helicopter.Local Banana Shire Council Mayor Maureen Clancy said the town was just a sea of water, telling Australian news agency AAP that floodwaters had even reached its evacuation centre.Following a request from Queensland, the government is providing two Blackhawk helicopters to assist in the evacuation of Theodore, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a statement.Australian Defence Force personnel are on stand-by to offer further support if required.By early afternoon, the Dawson River at Theodore was at 14.59 metres (48 feet) and rising -- way beyond the town's 1956 record of 14.07 metres -- and most of the town under water.

As many as 1,000 people have been forced from their homes by the waters, which has affected large parts of central and southern Queensland, with more than 100 homes and businesses inundated.Officials said while the rain was abating in some places, a vast amount of water upstream was yet to flow through the towns as it made its way to the sea. There's an enormous amount of water still coming and I think that's the problem, the unknown we've got to face, Western Downs Mayor Ray Brown told ABC Radio after touring affected communities by air.The Queensland government has declared several areas, including Theodore, Chinchilla and Dalby, disaster zones -- a move that gives police the power to force people from their homes if necessary. We are facing a really significant event here right across many parts of Queensland -- a lot of flooding, a lot of people isolated, a lot of evacuations now occurring and a lot more rain to come, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said. The floods are estimated to have cost grain farmers more than 400 million US dollars, while the crisis has closed hundreds of roads, shutting down parts of major highways. The government said that it would provide assistance to communities affected by the flooding, helping restore essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges and schools. While conditions across much of Queensland have eased, the threat from floodwaters remains in many areas, Gillard said, adding that while authorities had evacuated some people, other communities remained stranded.

Police have warned residents not to attempt to drive through waterlogged roads, after they were forced to rescue several people from vehicles -- including two adults and two toddlers who were forced to cling to trees after their car was swept away. They also arrested three teenagers after they attempted to use inflatable mattresses in a foolish and dangerous attempt to ride floodwaters for 30 kilometres to get to Brisbane on Monday. It's tomfoolery ... people on li-los (inflatable mattresses) floating down rivers, it's madness, we implore people to stop the silliness, assistant police commissioner Brett Pointing said.

Almost Everything Is A Crime In America Now: 14 Of The Most Ridiculous Things That Americans Are Being Arrested For The Economic Collapse December 28, 2010

Either we have a massive crime problem or the control grid that our leaders have erected for us is wildly out of control.Doesn’t it seem like almost everything is becoming a crime in America now? Americans are being arrested and charged with crimes for doing things like leaving dog poop on the ground, opening up Christmas presents early, not recycling properly, farting in class and having brown lawns. But is it healthy for our society for the police to be involved in such silly things? Every single day the United States inches closer to becoming a totalitarian society. While there are some that would welcome this shift, the truth is that throughout history the societies that have experienced the greatest economic prosperity have all had at least a certain level of freedom. Business thrives when people feel free to live and work. When a government tightens the grip too much many people just start shutting down. Just look at places like North Korea. Even though the rest of the world is sending them huge amounts of food starvation is still quite common in that totalitarian regime. That is why it is so disturbing that it seems like almost everything has become a crime in America now. As we continue to criminalize relatively normal behavior our slide toward becoming a totalitarian state will only accelerate. We are throwing anyone and everyone in prison these days. It is getting absolutely ridiculous. Today, the United States leads the world in the number of prisoners and in the percentage of the population in prison. The United States has 5% of the world’s population, but approximately 25%of the world’s incarcerated population.According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, as of the end of 2009 a total of 7,225,800 people were either on probation, in prison or on parole in America. That is a sign of a very, very sick society. Either we have a massive crime problem or the control grid that our leaders have erected for us is wildly out of control.

Or both.

But how in the world are we supposed to have a healthy economy if our entire nation is being turned into one gigantic prison? Sadly, it is not just hardcore criminals that are being rounded up and abused by authorities these days. The following are 14 of the most ridiculous things that Americans are being arrested for….

#1 A Michigan man has been charged with a felony and could face up to 5 years in prison for reading his wife’s email.

#2 A 49-year-old Queens woman had bruises all over her body after she was handcuffed, arrested and brutally beaten by NYPD officers. So what was her offense? The officers thought that her little dog had left some poop that she didn’t clean up.

#3 A 56-year-old woman who was once a rape victim refused to let airport security officials feel her breasts so she was thrown to the floor, put in handcuffs and arrested.

#4 In Milwaukee, one man was recently fined $500 for swearing on a public bus.

#5 Several years ago a 12-year-old boy in South Carolina was actually arrested by police for opening up a Christmas present early against his family’s wishes.

#6 In some areas of the country, it is now a crime to not recycle properly. For example, the city of Cleveland has announced plans to sort through trash cans to ensure that people are actually recycling according to city guidelines.

#7 A 12-year-old girl from Queens was arrested earlier this year and taken out of her school in handcuffs for writing Lex was here. 2/1/10 and I love my friends Abby and Faith on her desk.

#8 Back in 2008, a 13-year-old boy in Florida was actually arrested by police for farting in class.

#9 The feds recently raided an Amish farmer at 5 AM in the morning because they claimed that he was was engaged in the interstate sale of raw milk in violation of federal law.

#10 A few years ago a 10-year-old girl was arrested and charged with a felony for bringing a small steak knife to school. It turns out that all she wanted to do was to cut up her lunch so that she could eat it.

#11 On June 18th, two Christians decided that they would peacefully pass out copies of the gospel of John on a public sidewalk outside a public Islamic festival in Dearborn, Michigan and within three minutes 8 policemen surrounded them and placed them under arrest.

#12 A U.S. District Court judge slapped a 5oo dollar fine on Massachusetts fisherman Robert J. Eldridge for untangling a giant whale from his nets and setting it free. So what was his crime? Well, according to the court, Eldridge was supposed to call state authorities and wait for them do it.

#13 Once upon a time, a food fight in the cafeteria may have gotten you a detention. Now it may get you locked up. About a year ago, 25 students between the ages of 11 and 15 at a school in Chicago were taken into custody by police for being involved in a huge food fight in the school cafeteria.

#14 A few years ago a 70 year old grandmother was actually put in handcuffs and hauled off to jail for having a brown lawn.

Why in the world would anyone approve of the police arresting ordinary Americans for such things? It seems like ever since 9/11 the whole country has gotten security fever.Suddenly we need to get tough on everyone.Yes, crime is making a comeback, but once upon a time the police in this country were able to handle crime quite well and be courteous and helpful to ordinary citizens at the same time. But today it seems like nearly every single encounter with police ends up being negative.

It does not have to be that way.

The rest of the world sees what is going on in this country and many of them are deciding that they simply do not want to spend their tourist dollars here anymore. That is not a good thing for our economy. As the government continues to get even bigger and exerts even more control over our lives, many of our own people are getting sick of it and are moving abroad.America used to be the land of the free and the home of the brave.

That is no longer true.

Now we get thrown to the floor, handcuffed, beaten and arrested for things that we did not even know were crimes. If America continues to move in this direction it is going to ruin our economy, our reputation in the world and our national spirit.
Unfortunately, history has shown us that once a free nation starts to lose that freedom it is hard to reverse that slide. Perhaps we will be different. Perhaps the American people will stand up and demand that we restore the principles of liberty and freedom that this country was founded on.

Central Bank ups bond purchasing over Christmas period
LEIGH PHILLIPS Today DEC 28,10 @ 07:57 CET

The European Central Bank on Monday announced that its purchase of eurozone government bonds jumped to €1.121 billion over the past week. The increase, almost twice the previous week's purchase of €603 million in government bonds, comes despite the low level of trading over the Christmas period, as Frankfurt maintains its eurozone vigilance in Frankfurt even amid turkey dinners and carols.Total government debt purchases by the ECB amount to €73.5 billion since it began a buying programme in May when the Greek government hit the wall in its attempts to sell public debt to investors.

The ECB debt purchase scheme is intended to ease pressure on government borrowing costs.Despite the jump in the last week, purchases still remain far below the scale of similar actions in May, when the central bank was intervening with buys of sometimes over €10 billion each week.Since the height of the Greek crisis, the purchasing programme had been significantly reined in.However, with the return of eurozone turbulence, the ECB in December upped its public debt acquisitions.

EU industry chief voices need to block Chinese takeovers
ANDREW WILLIS Today DEC 28,10 @ 09:16 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Europe should establish a new authority with powers to block foreign takeovers of strategic European businesses, EU industry commissioner Antonio Tajani has argued. The authority is particularly necessary as Chinese companies increasingly look to grow their overseas investments, the Italian politician said in an interview with German business daily Handelsblatt on Monday (27 December). Chinese companies have the means to buy more and more European enterprises with key technologies in important sectors, remarked Mr Tajani. It is a question of investments but behind that there is also a strategic policy, to which Europe should respond politically, he said.As a result, Europe should establish an authority tasked with examining foreign investments in Europe using the the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US as a model.Under the proposal, the European authority would determine if the acquisition (of a company) with European know-how by a private or public foreign company represented a danger or not.A number of European and American firms have been frustrated in recent years by the speed at which their Chinese competitors have acquired new technologies developed outside the Middle Kingdom.

For its part, China has gradually sought to remove its own restrictions on foreign investment but considerable limitations still apply.Reacting to the EU suggestion for a new authority, German economy minister Rainer Bruederle warned against overly quick decisions.Of course one can have an evaluation procedure taking into account security and public order concerns. But we shouldn't take hasty actions, Mr Bruederle told the Handelsblatt paper on Tuesday.Europe profits from the openness of its markets and offers attractive conditions for foreign investors,he added.

MUSLIM NATIONS

EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY)of the north quarters, and all his bands:(SUDAN,AFRICA) and many people with thee.
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

ISAIAH 17:1
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

PSALMS 83:3-7
3 They (ARABS,MUSLIMS) have taken crafty counsel against thy people,(ISRAEL) and consulted against thy hidden ones.
4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
5 For they (MUSLIMS) have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:(TREATIES)
6 The tabernacles of Edom,(JORDAN) and the Ishmaelites;(ARABS) of Moab, PALESTINIANS,JORDAN) and the Hagarenes;(EGYPT)

DANIEL 11:40-43
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south( EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR IN ISRAEL) and the king of the north (RUSSIA AND MUSLIM HORDES OF EZEK 38+39) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.(JORDAN)
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

JOEL 2:3,20,30-31
3 A fire(NUCLEAR BOMB) devoureth before them;(RUSSIA-ARABS) and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army,(RUSSIA,MUSLIMS) and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.(SIBERIAN DESERT)
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(NUCLEAR BOMB)
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

London Terror Cell Targeted Rabbis
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu DEC 28,10

Britain revealed Tuesday that it arrested nine terrorists last week, five days before a planned Christmas bomb blitz that would have targeted two rabbis, among others. The names of the rabbis were not released, and authorities did not reveal several details of the planned attack. All nine terrorists were either born in Britain or grew up there. Some of them are of Bangladeshi origin, according to the London Daily Mail.Besides two rabbis, whose addresses were written on a list, other targets included a London tourist attraction, the London Stock Exchange, Mayor Boris Johnson, the dean of a cathedral and the American embassy. The terrorist gang also had visited Big Ben, a McDonald's restaurant and other sites where large crowds gather.

They already had tested explosives in preparation for the bomb blitz, according to evidence presented in court. All of the men are under the age of 29 and were arrested in a series of dawn raids after London intelligence officers conducted a surveillance operation and recorded the cell’s conversation.Publication of the arrests and charges against the terrorists coincided with charges by the Israeli Defense Ministry that the Palestinian Return Center is operating in London as the organizational arm of Hamas.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Media Parrots Hamas Line on Cast Lead Anniversary
by Maayana Miskin DEC 28,10

Mainstream media outlets are parroting Hamas' claims regarding the Gaza casualties of the Cast Lead counter-terror operation in articles marking two years since the beginning of Operation Cast Lead, from the last week in December 2008 until three weeks later in January 2009.Israeli researchers found that 1,166 residents of Gaza were killed in fighting, most of them terrorists. Fewer than 300 of those killed were civilians, they said.Names released by Hamas and Gaza media during the skirmish showed that the overwhelming majority of victims were young men. However, Hamas originally claimed that over 1,400 people were killed, and that more than 1,000 of those were civilians, saying that just 48 of its terrorists had died. While the terrorist group recently admitted that 700, not 48, of its fighters were among the dead, world media continues to repeat its initial claim that most victims were civilians.A report printed Monday by AFP stated that the operation killed 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, while the Associated Press stated that Cast Lead left about 1,400 Palestinians dead, including many civilians, and brought heavy international criticism on Israel.Reuters stated that the 2008 operation killed some 1,400 Palestinians, but unlike AFP, it did not claim that most of the dead were civilians.

Media outlets around the world often repeated Hamas claims during Cast Lead, leading to harsh international criticism of Israel. In one case, Hamas and local United Nations officials accused Israel of killing dozens of civilians who had hidden in a UN school – when in fact, none of those in the school were killed. The Associated Press, and the British papers Guardian and Daily Mail were among those to accuse Israel of killing civilians in the school.UN official John Ging later clarified that Israel was right in saying that its troops had not fired on the school and that nobody in the school was killed.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Easier Breathing with Advanced New Gas Mask
by Maayana Miskin DEC 28,10

The Defense Ministry, working with the Shalon company, has developed a new gas mask filter that allows wearers to breath easier. Dozens of the filters have been produced in recent weeks in a test run.If the filters can be produced at a cost equal to that of production of the current filters, they may be put into use in gas masks across the country. However, budget constraints could keep old filters in use if the new filters are found to be more expensive.Lieutenant-Colonel Lior Gabai heads the Home Front Command's project to update its equipment for protection in case of non-conventional attack. He praised the new filter, saying it can barely be felt. With this filter there is no breathing difficulty, as opposed to the current filter, which stalls the flow of air and makes it harder, he added. While the new filter is better than the old, the IDF's first priority is to get gas masks to all citizens, officials said. At the moment, there is not enough of a budget to supply masks for all citizens of the country, they said.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Ambassadors’ Conference Ends on Sour Note
by Elad Benari DEC 28,10

For the past several years, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has taken advantage of the holiday season abroad to hold an annual conference for Israeli ambassadors around the world. This year, however, the conference ended on a sour note, Arutz Sheva’s Hebrew website reported on Monday.According to the report, Foreign Ministry employees decided to take advantage of the ambassadors’ conference and use it as a means of worsening the measures they have taken to protest an impasse in negotiations with the Ministry of Finance on improving their employment conditions.

Acting upon orders by the workers union, starting Monday morning the agenda for the conference was frozen, and before long the workers decided not to attend a scheduled meeting with President Shimon Peres.Acting Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rafi Barak, urged union members not to cancel the meeting with Peres, but they refused to attend. In addition, the union members handed the ambassadors and Foreign Ministry employees who came especially from abroad to participate in the conference black shirts bearing the words I am a poor diplomat. The workers union published data on Monday, according to which 10 per cent of Foreign Ministry’s employees are considered as being below the poverty line.

With food safety bill, U.S. government will spend nearly $1 million per person to prevent food-borne illness deaths Mike Adams Natural News
Tuesday, December 28, 2010

(NaturalNews) The recently-passed Food Safety Modernization Act, which was passed in order to prevent food-borne illness deaths in the USA, will cost $1.4 billion over the first five years. But nobody thinks about the economics of the issue. How many people are we going to save by spending this $1.4 billion, even assuming it works?

To answer that question, let’s look at the food illness fatality figures offered by the CDC:

- Out of the 5,000 food-borne illness deaths each year in the United States, only 1,809 are attributable to foodborne transmission according to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol5n…).

- E.coli, which is often quoted in the big scare stories about food safety, only kills 78 people a year through food-borne transmission (52 plus 26, from the CDC’s chart). Interestingly, according to the CDC’s own numbers (from 1998), more people are killed from being struck by lightning each year than from e.coli.

- Listeria kills 499 people and Salmonella kills 553 people. But salmonella poisoning is easily acquired from store-bought chickens, of which two-thirds are contaminated with salmonella every day! Since the food safety bill doesn’t even address chickens, cows or other animals because those are handled by the USDA, this salmonella fatality figure probably won’t be reduced at all. (Salmonella comes largely from animals: Fowl, reptiles, etc.)

So how many people will the Food Safety Modernization Act actually impact? It’s primarily going to address e.coli poisoning and Listeria contamination. So we’re talking about a grand total of 78 + 499 people each year, or 577 people.By the way, for comparison, consider the fact that 300 people die in the U.S. each year from penicillin allergies. Another 14,500 people die each year from taking NSAID painkiller medications. Nearly three quarter of a million people are killed by conventional medicine (drug deaths, surgical mistakes, iatrogenic deaths, etc, source: Death By Medicine). Congress does nothing to address these causes of death, of course. The focus is on the few hundred people who die each year from the common causes of food-borne illness. So in order to prevent the deaths of 577 people each year for five years, the U.S. Congress is going to spend $1.4 billion! But that’s overly optimistic, it turns out. Because no food safety program is 100 percent effective in the first place.Let’s share a wild fantasy and imagine that the Food Safety Modernization Act might be a huge success and prevent 50 percent of those 577 deaths. That’s a wild stretch, of course, especially since the bill doesn’t even cover cattle, hogs and poultry, and that’s where e.coli originates from in the first place. But just for fun, let’s assume a 50% reduction in food-borne illness deaths. That means, if you do the math on this, that spending $1.4 billion over five years would prevent the deaths of 1,443 people from food-borne illnesses. That’s almost $1 million per person of taxpayer dollars being spent by the federal government for each food safety death prevented.

A million dollars per person. Is this really the best use of taxpayer money? It would seem that if you’re going to spend this money in order to save lives, there’s a way to save a hundred times as many lives with the same dollars…This $1.4 billion, by the way, would be used to fund a huge expansion of the FDA which would unleash a whole new army of FDA agents who run around the country auditing farms and greenhouse operations, then arresting those who don’t have their paperwork in order. It’s like a whole new TSA, except their agents aren’t confined to airports. They come to you and search your farm, your greenhouse or even your backyard garden operation (no, small farms are not automatically exempted from the food safety bill as was claimed by those who supported it).

Congress once again fails to understand economics
This food safety bill was yet another feel good bill that nearly everyone in Congress supported. Who wouldn’t want to be on the record voting for food safety? But as usual, Congress forgets that it is spending other peoples’ money. When you’re spending the taxpayers’ money, cost doesn’t really matter, especially to those members of Congress who habitually think bigger government is the answer to every problem. The real question, though, is the following: Is there a better way to spend $1.4 billion to save Americans’ lives?

The answer is: absolutely! For example, if you really want to save lives at a very low cost, all you need to do is hand out free vitamin D supplements to the population. Vitamin D3 supplements could easily be purchased for $10 for a 30-day supply (in volume). So a one-year supply of vitamin D would only cost $120. For $1.4 billion, you could provide a one-year supply of vitamin D for 11.6 million people, or nearly four percent of the U.S. population.Because vitamin D prevents 77 percent of all cancers (http://www.naturalnews.com/021892.html), you could slash the rate of cancer fatalities during that year for nearly 4 percent of the U.S. population! At the same time, because vitamin D boosts immune function and provides greatly improved immunity, you would also sharply reduce deaths from winter colds and flu (which the CDC claims kill 30,000 people a year).Vitamin D also helps prevent heart disease, obesity, kidney disorders and even psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, meaning that with this one nutrient, you could slash the rates of several of the most devastating and costly diseases known to modern medicine.

Statistically speaking, you would save far more than 577 lives per year and at the same time, you would greatly reduce hospitalization costs and expenditures to the point where the $1.4 billion spent on these vitamin D supplements is actually paid back through the savings in Medicare / Medicaid expenditures. In fact, the payback on a vitamin D investment by the government for the population might be more like ten to one: For every $100 spent on vitamin D supplements, $1,000 would likely be saved in medical costs. This is a rough estimate, but you get the idea: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say.Instead of money going out the door, a vitamin D program would actually reduce overall government (and state) spending on sick-care management. So if you really want to save lives and money at the same time, instead of handing another billion dollars to the FDA which will only use it against the people, it would make a lot more economic sense to invest that money in a low-cost, extremely safe and highly effective nutritional supplement that could sharply reduce cases of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression and even mental disorders. Why can’t Congress understand economics and make rational decisions about smarter ways to spend money? The answer, of course, is because it’s not their money. This is why governments that spend taxpayer dollars always end up betraying the taxpayers. If it’s not their money, there’s never any real incentive to spend it wisely.

Economics 101
Congress has never really had a firm grasp on the fundamentals of economics, by the way. In spending your money, Congress acts with extreme arrogance, insisting that Big Government can solve your problems by spending more money — any amount of money — to keep you safe, secure and healthy. And they’re going to force you into a sick-care system, have FDA agents auditing your backyard farms, and outlaw raw milk just to make sure you stay healthy in the way Congress wants you to (which really means keeping you sick, of course). But as long as they’re spending YOUR money, who’s counting? It doesn’t come out of the pockets of Congressional members, does it? They get paid the same whether they waste your money or not, so the motivation is to blow as much public money as necessary for them to take credit for passing new safety measures that sound good on paper but really represent an economic disaster. It also brings up the question: How much is a human life worth when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars? Is it acceptable for the government to confiscate, for example, $1 million from the taxpayers to save the life of one person? If you answer yes, then how about $10 million per life saved? How about $1 billion? At what point do expenditures that are said to protect lives become economically unsustainable to the rest of the nation? And if spending money is the way to protect people, then why not have the government hire a personal shopping and food preparation coach for each and every person in America who can do all their shopping and food washing to make sure they don’t get e.coli poisoning? That would certainly save lives, too. As Big Government supporters might also add, it would create jobs! Sure it would, but government jobs don’t count toward the economy — they take away from the earnings of everyone else because they are funded with the confiscated tax dollars of the rest of the people who are actually working for a living! Even government workers who earn a paycheck see their own paychecks reduced by the government to take out federal taxes that are used to hire yet more government workers somewhere else!

Risks are inherent in the world
In all this, there’s also the point that your safety is not guaranteed in our world. Everything you do has some sort of risk associated with it, and most people do very little to avoid risks in the first place. People drive drunk. They fail to wear vehicle seatbelts. They go skiing and break their legs. They smoke cigarettes, they eat Happy Meals, they drink diet soda and they coat their bodies with toxic cosmetics and personal care products on a daily basis. The average American bathes themselves in over 200 synthetic chemicals before they even leave the house in the morning! They don’t even value their own lives enough to live a safe, healthy lifestyle to begin with.Real food safety is completely ignored by the federal government.Even in the grocery store, there are all sorts of additional threats to your safety that this food bill doesn’t cover. The food bill didn’t say anything about the aspartame in diet soda and how it may contribute to brain cancer. It didn’t mention the deadly ingredient sodium nitrite found in hot dogs and how it aggressively promotes cancer. It also didn’t cover the startling fact that the vast majority of all store-bought chickens are contaminated with salmonella right from the moment you buy them (http://www.naturalnews.com/028661_c…). Meat, you see, isn’t covered under this food safety bill. And that’s especially odd given that e.coli doesn’t grow in plants — it only grows in the guts of animals. It seems Congress failed to understand that simple biological point. They think e.coli magically appears in batches of spinach.

In fact, the grotesque and dangerous practices of the entire meat industry were completely ignored in the Food Safety Modernization Act. Instead, all the food safety problems are being blamed on plants. This means that $1.4 billion spent on food safety is actually going in the wrong direction! Instead of auditing greenhouses and small farms, the FDA food police should be going after the outrageously dangerous and inhumane practices of the factory animal operations such as cattle feedlots. That’s where the food poisoning originates. But, oh yeah, I forgot: The FDA doesn’t cover that. It’s the jurisdiction of the USDA. So why isn’t Congress giving money to the USDA to inspect factory feedlot operations? Because the corporations that run those feedlots have better lobbyists, of course. So Congress simply decided to throw the money at the FDA — after all, the word food is in the agency’s name — and then take credit for improving food safety in the USA.

Keeping up appearances
When you’re a member of Congress, you see, what’s far more important than actually solving problems is to appear to solve problems. If wasting another few billion dollars gives you the ability to claim, during the next election, that you voted for food safety, then that sounds great with voters. It might get you reelected so you can spend another two years wasting the taxpayers’ money on even more Big Government programs. That’s the business of Congress, after all: Stay in office and keep claiming authority over the lives of the American people. And with the Food Safety Modernization Act, they now want to control what you grow, even as they do virtually nothing to improve the actual safety of the food you eat.The truth of this whole scam is almost too much to swallow. In a nation where 100,000+ Americans are killed each year by FDA-approved medications, the government is going to spend $1.4 billion to try to prevent 1,443 deaths from food-borne illness while doing absolutely nothing to prevent pharmaceutical deaths. No wonder the American people have lost faith in Big Government. Every time you take a rational look at what the government is doing, it all resembles a circus of morons competing to see who can take credit for coming up with the biggest lie that the American people will actually believe. And year after year, they somehow manage to out-do each other.Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/030853_food_safety_government_spending.html#ixzz19OmDDVqR

STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

From New York's MTA, LIRR to Boston's MBTA, winter storm slows transit
By Mark Trumbull - DEC 28,10

Despite sunny skies Tuesday, rail and transit systems in the Northeast were still struggling to get back to normal operations. New York area commuters faced the biggest challenges, but milder problems stretched from Philadelphia to Boston. The MTA system in New York has advised would-be commuters to consider traveling later in the morning if at all possible and warned of possible crowding issues due to limited service on subways and commuter trains.

MTA officials warned of subway service outages, particularly where lines were directly exposed to the snow, including in Brooklyn. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has suspended service on some routes and is operating a Martin Luther King Day schedule on its Babylon, Huntington, Port Washington, and Ronkonkoma branches.
The Metro-North Railroad (MNR) lines into New York are operating, but on a Saturday schedule on the Harlem, Hudson, and New Haven lines.Part of the challenge across the Northeast has been simply the volume of snow on tracks and roads. Crews worked to clear as much as two feet from rails near New York. But the transit systems have also battled problems with weather-impaired signals.

New York bus service? Don't ask.

Long Island Bus is operating very limited service due to road conditions, the MTA said on its website, where updates will be posted.Limited-Stop bus service in New York City remains suspended. Local and express service in the five boroughs is operating with delays and shortened routes, it said. We will only restore service where we can safely do so.Near Philadelphia, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority warned that rail passengers could face 30 minute delays, and a few bus routes are suspended. The New Jersey Transit system also has delays, after areas such as Port Elizabeth saw nearly three feet of snow. Trains are operating on an enhanced weekend schedule, bus service has been restored, and passengers in the central or northern parts of the state should expect delays due to local road conditions. The NJTransit.com website has additional weather-related information, such as a few trains that are canceled or delayed by up to an hour.In Boston, some commuter lines are running late by as much as 30 minutes, and a truck stuck on one track caused similar mild delays on the Kingston/Plymouth line, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) said. Subway and bus riders also faced some delays after the big dig-out.

US shakes off blizzard, but not travel misery
by Sebastian Smith - DEC 28,10

NEW YORK (AFP) – The US northeast began Tuesday to shake off the icy grip of one of the biggest blizzards in years, but beleaguered travelers faced at least another day of headaches in New York airports. After one last night of ferocious winds, the storm had moved fully out of New York by early Tuesday. The system, packing enormous snowfalls and gales, churned up through Maine and into Canada, leaving a cold tail as far south down the US east coast as the Carolinas. The lifting of the siege meant that New York, the hardest hit area in the blizzard beginning Sunday, could finally start getting back to normal.Snow plows and salt spreaders were hard at work before dawn in Manhattan, battling through knee-high snow in many streets. But officials expected it would take several days to get New York and the all-important transport hubs back fully on track following the sixth heaviest snowfall in city history. The three major airports of John F. Kennedy International, La Guardia and Newark International in New Jersey reopened late Monday, but cancellation of more than 5,000 flights meant a huge backlog and more delays.

Arriving flights at Newark were experiencing delays of an average of eight hours on Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration said. At JFK, delays for arriving flights averaged five and a half hours.Operations at La Guardia were reported closer to normal.Continental said that operations in New York and Newark remained disrupted.
On December 28, we will attempt to resume flights as the operation permits. Some arrivals will be postponed in the morning and early afternoon hours to assist with the operation.Aircraft meant to arrive in Newark on Monday were now arriving Tuesday, Continental said.JetBlue, which cancelled flights out of New York or Boston until Tuesday, echoed other airlines, saying that affected passengers would be able to re-book without charge until January 14.Conditions remained grueling for ground commuters, with bus, subway and train lines still snarled up.There continue to be major delays and in some cases suspensions in service across our transportation network that will continue through the morning and into the afternoon, the Metropolitan Transport Authority said in New York.Passengers could only hope for better service than on Monday, when many found themselves stuck at wind-blasted bus stops without buses and in stricken subway cars as they tried to get to work or home.

The rescue services were sometimes not much better off: police cars, ambulances and trucks sent to tow the many stranded buses often wound up stuck in the same snow and ice.Officials in eastern Canada said the blizzard had dumped heavy snow and on Tuesday more than 12,000 homes in eastern Canada were without electricity, some of them already for 24 hours.Flight schedules were severely disrupted in Toronto and Montreal.Meanwhile, an unusual cold snap in New Orleans led to tragedy when eight homeless people died in an abandoned building that caught fire.
