WHAT NEW WORLD ORDER-ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT,ENVIROMENTALISTS,NEW AGERS,HINDUS,BUDANS BELIEVE.(OCCULTISTS)
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
WHAT CHRISTIANS BELIEVE IN THE CREATION OF THE WORLD.
9-CREATED MAN & WOMAN TO HAVE DOMINION OVER THE WHOLE EARTH AND ITS CREATIONS,AND TO FILL THE EARTH WITH CHILDREN ABUNDANTLY.
8-CREATED ANIMALS-INSECTS ETC
7-CREATED FISH-BIRDS TO MULTIPLY FILL THE EARTH
6-CREATED SUN-MOON-STARS CREATED
4-CREATED THE CARBON-AIR-DRY LAND-SEAS
3-CREATED LIGHT FROM DARKNESS
2-CREATED THE EARTH & HEAVEN
1-GOD - CREATED (NOT MAN CREATED)(NOT EVOLUTION SCUM CREATED)
SO GOD PUT HUMANS IN CONTROL OF ALL THE EARTH IN THE FINAL CREATION AFTER HIMSELF.
WHAT NEW WORLD ORDER-ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT,ENVIROMENTALISTS,NEW AGERS,HINDUS,BUDANS BELIEVE.(OCCULTISTS)
1-EARTH AND AIR WORSHIP-SAVE THE EARTH
2-LIGHT OF LOVE-PEACE-JOY
3-SAVE THE CARBON-LAND-SEAS
4-SAVE THE TREES & PLANTS
5-SAVE THE ATMOSPHERE-SUN-MOON-STARS
8-MAN SAVES ALL THEY SAY
9-THEY HATE GOD-THEIR CONTROL FREAKS
WE SEE THE OCCULTISTS PERVERT OR REVERSE THE ACTIONS OF GOD TOTALLY.GOD SAYS MAN HAS CONTROL OF THE EARTH NEXT TO HIM.OCCULTISTS PUT EVERYTHING AHEAD OF MAN AND GOD AND WORSHIP THEM NOT GOD.
THE FIRST CONTROL FREAK WORLD GOVERNMENT WORSHIPPER WAS THE TOWER OF BABEL.
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
WHAT WAS THE GOAL OF THE WORLD GOVERNMENT THEN.1ST WORLD GOVERNMENT.
1-ONE LANGUAGE,ONE SPEECH
2-BUILT ONE CITY-ONE TOWER WELL KNOWN (EASY CONTROL OF PEOPLE-POLITICALLY-RELIGIOUSLY)
3-ECONOMIC-POLITICAL-RELIGIOUS CONTROL OF EVERYBODY ON EARTH.
4-ONE MIND-ONE VISION-MAN RULES NOT GOD (WE CONTROL ALL-CAN DO ALL)
3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:
2 KINGS 23:5
5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT TODAY.
TODAY WE HAVE INTERPRETERS,THE INTERNET AND COMPUTERS AND TVS AND SATTELITES.ALL THESE COMBINED WE HAVE A ONE LANGUAGE AND SPEECH TODAY.
TODAY ALL GOVERNMENTS WANT A SINGLE GOVERNMENT TO CONTROL ALL DISASTERS AND HAPPENINGS.AND TO CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL HUMAN ON EARTH.
TODAY NEW WORLD ORDERERS WANT A ONE RELIGIOUS SYSTEM TO BRING ALL THE FAITHS ON EARTH TOGETHER.
TODAY A ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS.
ONE MIND-ONE VISION
TODAY ITS SAVE THE EARTH,WORSHIP IT AND THE SUN AND PAY US TAXES SO WE CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS.WE ARE GOD AND WILL SAVE YOU FROM ALL TO COME ON THE EARTH.WE WILL DO ALL THIS FOR THE GOOD OF THE EARTH AND FROR THE LIGHT OF LOVE AND PEACE ON THE EARTH.TRUST US NOT GOD,WE CAN SAVE ALL.
SO WE CAN SEE THE CLEAR TRUTH THAT TODAY IS THE TOWER OF BABEL ONCE AGAIN WERE MAN WORSHIPS EVERYTHING BUT GOD.AND CHRISTIANS ARE AGAINST THIS PERVERTED VIEW OF THE WORLD SO THESE ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT OCCULTISTS AND GROUPS HAVE TO ELIMINATE US FROM THE EARTH FOR PEACE AND ONENESS AND FOR THE GOOD OF THE EARTH.
BE STRONG CHRISTIANS WE HAVE GOD (KING JESUS) ON OUR SIDE.EVEN THOUGH THE WORLD SAYS ALL RELIGIONS LEAD TO SALVATION.WE KNOW JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY AND JUST LIKE THE TOWER OF BABEL JESUS RETURNS TO EARTH TO CONFOUND THEIR GOALS AND SETS UP HIS KINGDOM FOREVER FROM JERUSALEM.WE CAN ALL SLEEP IN PEACE TONIGHT AND FOREVER AS JESUS RULES FROM JERUSALEM FOREVER WITH THE SAVED AND THE ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT-OCCULTISTS AND THEIR SATAN WORSHIP WILL GO TO HELL WITH SATAN FOREVER TO BURN FOR HATING GOD-JESUS AND ISRAEL.
UN meeting aims to set species-saving goals By MALCOLM FOSTER, Associated Press Writer – Sun Oct 17, 8:36 am ET
TOKYO – An international conference aimed at preserving the planet's diversity of plants and animals in the face of pollution and habitat loss begins Monday in Japan, facing some of the same divisions between rich and poor nations that have stalled U.N. climate talks.Seventeen years after the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity was enacted, it has yet to achieve any major initiative to slow the alarming rate of species extinction and loss of ecosystems despite global goals set in 2002 to make major improvement by this year.Frogs and other amphibians are most at risk of disappearing, coral reefs are the species deteriorating most rapidly and nearly a quarter of all plant species are threatened, according to the convention, which is convening the two-week meeting.A key task facing delegates will be to hammer out a set of 20 strategic goals for the next decade.Unless steps are taken to reverse the loss of Earth's biodiversity, scientists warn that the rate of extinction will climb and natural habitats will be degraded or destroyed — contributing to climate change and threatening agricultural production, fish stocks in the oceans and access to clean water.Scientists estimate that the Earth is losing species 100 to 1,000 times the historical average, upsetting the intricately interconnected natural world. Prominent insect biologist E.O. Wilson at Harvard University argues that a man-made environmental crisis is pushing the Earth toward its sixth big extinction phase, the greatest since the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago.
However, some battle lines have already formed between developed and developing nations over the convention's strategic mission statement — whether to take action to halt or simply slow the loss of biodiversity by 2020 — and finding a way to equitably share the benefits of genetic resources, such as plants native to poor countries that have been converted into lucrative drug products in the West. The convention, which will bring together 8,000 delegates from 193 member nations in Nagoya, 170 miles (270 kilometers) west of Tokyo, was born out of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. So far, the convention has failed to meet a series of goals set eight years ago to preserve the world's biodiversity against overfishing, deforestation and pollution.Conservation groups attribute part of that to a lack of political will and funding. They also say that some of the goals until now have been fuzzy, and partly blame their own failure to make a convincing case that action is needed — something they hope to change in Nagoya. We haven't been able to successfully get across a message that our society and economies ultimately depend on this biodiversity, said Bill Jackson, deputy director-general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. We have to fix the problem within the next 10 years.Host country Japan, meanwhile, will be looking to this conference as a chance to portray itself as a protector of biodiversity after helping kill off many of the measures at the CITES, or Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, meeting earlier this year that would have limited the trade in tuna, sharks and other marine species.Divisions between rich and poor nations over how to fairly share in the access and benefits of genetic resources could undermine the gathering, observers say.
For example, the rosy periwinkle, a plant native to Madagascar, produces two cancer-fighting substances. Drug companies have grown the plants and profited from them, but little of the money has returned to Madagascar. Developing countries argue they should receive royalties or a share of the benefits of such natural resources. The convention aims to address this problem by setting up a legal framework by which producers and users can negotiate to reach mutually agreeable terms to ensure equitable sharing of resources and their benefits.Developing countries are putting pressure on developed countries and saying if we don't reach an agreement on this issue, we won't give you what you want on the strategic plan, said Patricia Yakabe Malentaqui, international media manager at the environmental group Conservation International. All the parties are at risk of polarizing the debate.Another contentious goal will be setting a percentage of the Earth's land and oceans that should be protected by 2020.Currently, 13 percent of land and less than 1 percent of open ocean is protected — which can range from a strict nature reserve to an area managed for sustainable use of natural resources. Those percentages need to be raised to 25 percent and 15 percent respectively, Conservation International says. But even if delegates manage to agree to such targets, carrying them out in real life is another matter. Businesses will likely oppose any limits on their activities and population growth means setting aside such protected areas will become increasingly difficult. Furthermore, the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity has no mechanism for enforcing compliance.Environmental groups argue that creating protected areas reap huge economic rewards. For example, there is plenty of evidence, says IUCN's Jackson, that providing safe havens for fisheries help their populations recover and flourish.

Let NOT there be any of this STUFF in my church!
Friday the Glenn Beck program featured the latest attempt by the far left at the continuing infiltration into America's churches and synagogues. An extreme environmentalist indoctrination program for teens called Let There Be . . .Stuff was designed by the pantheistic (God is everything and everything is God) Green religion and has already been accepted for use by several Mainline Christian churches. According to Beck, the program is sponsored by the infamous George Soros's Tides foundation. Let There Be . . .Stuff is a spin off from The Story of Stuff, an animated environmentalist indoctrination video used in public schools across the country. According to Beck, The Story of Stuff is an anti-capitalist tale that unfortunately has virtually no facts correct. Go to this link to see The Story of Stuff video and to see the debunking videos as well. Now back to what they are doing in our churches. Here's what Let There Be . . .Stuff has to say about their own program promoting religious pluralism:GreenFaith and The Story of Stuff Project have teamed up to create, Let There Be ... Stuff?, a six-session curriculum for teenagers that explores the relationship between their consumption, their faith, and the health of the planet. The program sounds innocent enough and presents a number of great truths. But subtlety interspersed among these truths is the highly nuanced language of religious pluralism and the equating of God with God's creation. Basically, it's a gradual indoctrination into Gaia (Mother Earth) worship by the use of sly inversion techniques (reversal, or turning things inside inside out).

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with social religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a religious crutch.Resisting the Green Dragon is a Biblical response to One of the Greatest Deceptions of our day - the emergence of environmentalism as a religion. Please take the time to visit the RGD link and click their share button to share on your Facebook and Twitter pages.RGD, which is sponsored by The Cornwall Alliance, has created a 12-week series using leading Christians who speak out about how to resist the Green Dragon. The series for churches includes a DVD, discussion guide, and book presenting a Christian response to radical environmentalism. The Cornwall Alliance is a coalition of clergy, theologians, religious leaders, scientists, academics, and policy experts committed to bringing a balanced Biblical view of stewardship to the critical issues of environment and development. . .
A major step was taken in the spring of 2000 when a coalition of scholars and religious leaders put forward an ethical statement of belief called the Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship. This declaration has so far been signed by over 1,500 clergy, theologians, policy experts and other people of faith, – including such well-known leaders as Dr. Charles Colson, Dr. James Dobson, Rabbi Jacob Neusner, Dr. R.C. Sproul, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, and Rev. Dr. D. James Kennedy, among others. It has come to be viewed as one of the most significant expressions of belief about religion and the environment in modern times. What can you do? Help promote Biblical resistance to extreme environmentalism by sharing a link to Resisting the Green Dragon with your church. Let your church know that you will NOT support the use of Let There Be . . .Stuff materials in your church.

Turning Houses of Worship into Religious-Environmental Leaders
The GreenFaith Certification Program is a two year program providing support, resources and guidance to participating institutions to integrate environmental themes into their worship, religious education, facility maintenance, and social outreach. In recognition for their accomplishments, these institutions earn certification as a GreenFaith Sanctuary.
GROUNDBREAKING! If you dream of becoming a congregation that puts Creation Care at the center of its agenda, this is the path you want to take! The Certification Program has been one of the best things we have participated in as a church.Debbie O'Halloran, Green Team Leader, Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Temple Beth Rishon has saved over $16,000 through its energy conservation activities, and reduced its carbon footprint by the equivalent of taking 7 cars off the road for a year.Trinity Presbyterian Church is organizing an Environmental Health and Justice Tour, visiting blighted sites in their neighborhood and meeting with justice leaders to advocate for change. Christ Church--with a total membership of only 16 people--held an interfaith worship service and discussion forum with the Muslim community, focused around the values of environmental stewardship in the Bible and Koran. Jacksonville Jewish Center, an 800 member institution, is organizing an interfaith environmental conference, attracting congregations from around the region.Kids at Temple Beth Rishon are excited to show the results of their CFL Fundraiser.
What do each of these institutions have in common? The GreenFaith Certification Program. It's fundamentally changing these congregations, helping them to embrace environmental stewardship while saving money, boosting engagement of their members, and serving as powerful examples to their community, their denominations, and the world. This is a wonderful, wonderful ongoing project for our Congregation. It fulfills our central mission as much as anything else we do, and it is inclusive of people in our Congregation who may not be so comfortable with other ways of expressing our responsibilities as Jews, but nonetheless, want to perform tikkun olam.Rick Rubenstein, President, Adath Shalom synagogueOver 2 years, participating institutions carry out initiatives to integrate environmental themes into their worship, religious education, facility maintenance, and social outreach. In recognition for their accomplishments, these institutions earn certification as a GreenFaith Sanctuary. The GreenFaith Certification Program empowers religious institutions to play their uniquely important leadership role in the development of an environmentally just and sustainable world.
ENVIRONMENTALISM HAS BECOME A RELIGION THAT WANTS TO CONTROL LAND, PEOPLE AND THE WORLD By Dr. Laurie Roth, Talkshow Host June 27, 2008 NewsWithViews.com
There is a Religion that has been growing in stature over the last decade. Now it is becoming one of the most powerful, well funded and organized Religions ever. It is the Religion of environmentalism and worship of animals and nature. In this Religion people are in the way and way down the totem pole of worth next to animals and nature. The organizations and people behind this have unlimited amounts of money, both foreign and domestic. Their goal is to control land, people and the world, having ultimate, global power and money. If you look at The Earth Charter you get the idea. They use all sorts of manipulative language hoping you don't notice it is the worship of animals and nature with you and I being the unpardonable sin. We are the endless cause of carbon emissions and problems.
If you think I've waxed a little insane and conspiratorial, why are we seeing the environmentalists cramming bills and laws into place at the state and federal level, trying to seize millions of acres of property all across this country? You may not have followed or tracked just how many areas across the U.S. are being studied to turn into national parks and wetland areas.Right now there is a study group looking at turning the entire Mississippi river into a national park. Translation, that would mean seizing hundreds of thousands of acres all around the river that would
have to be morphed into wet land areas. Goodbye farm lands and major food sources for America. Now the farmers, land and business owners would be controlled, regulated and go through permit hell before they could do things with their property, water crops and act like normal farmers.I interviewed Chuck Cushman, director of Landrights.org and asked him how the environmentalists position and manipulate their land grabs. He said they first circle a big chunk of land, like the Y to Y corridor(Yukon To Yellowstone Land Grab), use the excuses in congress of clean
water preserving national treasures and wetlands nature and certain animals. Once the take over happens, farms and businesses within the mapped area notice the new regulations and permit process that is unfolded to do any normal thing with the land. Roads here and there begin to be closed because they are compromising to animal life or plant life.At this stage you see businesses and farms starting to perish due to traffic diminishing and regulations and permits overwhelming the people.Hark, the good news is that the Bruno snail and trees are happy.
These land grab attempts are unconstitutional and don't reflect the original purpose in our constitution for using eminent domain for a city to finish a highway or stop blight in an area. As you may recall in the Kelo v.s. New London decision in the Supreme Court, they ruled that even a major corporation can trump the rights of the small business and homeowners. The City and big corporation won because the city would make more money and tax revenue with the big corporation developing the area.
Since then many states have limited the use of eminent domain. This environmental religion of control has allies with the global elite crowd who want to eradicate sovereignty and turn us into a Tri Country region called the North American Union (Mexico, Canada and USA).They plan to use the save the planet issues and high fuel prices to destroy the USA economy and dissolve our government like when the economy
collapsed in the Soviet Union to dissolve their government several years ago. Then the elite can rewrite the Constitution and form a fascist government. Another arm of control within this group are the gun control people. To have ultimate power, you must control the land, food supply, guns and of course the money.Thankfully, at least we still have some in congress and in courts who are doing their job and reflecting U.S. law, not rewriting it. We just saw a landmark ruling affirming an individual's second amendment right to own a handgun in what was a 5-4 ruling in favor of gun
rights in District of Columbia v. Heller. These are sadly the days when powerful elites really are pushing aggressively to take our guns, seize our land and food supply and create a one-world Government and religion.Forget the buffoons running for various offices, vote as best you can but use your voice and collective power by acting as we the people.Congress does respond to calls, faxes and emails. We are in a critical time in our country. We all need to exercise our power.
The Clash Between Religion and Science - Most Scientists Are Nonbelievers, Study Finds By LEE DYE July 3, 2007
PrintRSSFont Size: Share:EmailTwitterFacebookMoreFarkTechnoratiGoogleLiveMy SpaceNewsvineRedditDeliciousMixxYahooHere's one reason why the war between science and religion cannot be resolved. Most scientists do not believe in God. (abc news)That's one of the findings in a huge study of leading scientists at the 21 top-rated research universities in the United States. And there's more: Almost 52 percent of the 1,646 scientists who participated in the study have no current religious affiliation compared with only 14 percent of the general population. More than 31 percent said they do not believe in God, and another 31 percent said they do not know if there is a God and there is no way to find out -- a whopping 62 percent of those surveyed.More than 56 percent did not attend a religious service during the entire year preceding the survey.Only 9.7 percent said they have no doubts about God's existence. The landmark study was conducted by sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund at the University at Buffalo, and Christopher P. Scheitle of Pennsylvania State University. Ecklund said it's the first study in decades of the religious beliefs and practices of elite academics, and it included 271 in-depth interviews with leading scientists, some of which lasted several hours. She notes that the participants may not be representative of scientists as a whole, because they are the superachievers in their fields, men and women who are obsessed with science. But the findings are important, she said, because these are the people who shape the scientific attitudes and goals of the nation's academic communities.
The clash between science and religion is as old as science itself, but it seems especially heated -- and particularly important -- these days because of burning issues ranging from evolution to stem cell research. It may seem that scientists tend to shy away from discussing religion, but Ecklund did not find that to be the case. About 75 percent of the scientists she surveyed, through a professional polling organization, agreed to participate in the study, a surprisingly high number. None of their names are being released. The question she most wanted to answer was pretty basic: Does the study of science drive a person away from religion? It does not, she said in an interview.Nearly all the scientists who said they believe in God, and have a current affiliation with a church, were raised in a home where religion was considered very important, she said. Thus, they conform to the same pattern seen in the population at large. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree. Most of the scientists who believe in God have children, she said. And the 3,000 pages of transcribed interviews tell her something else.In my interviews, some scientists reclaimed the religion of their youth when they had children, and people in the general public do that as well, she said.Unlike the general population, however, younger scientists tend to be more religious than older scientists. And although women generally tend to be more religious than men, that was not the case among the surveyed scientists.Gender did not play a role,Ecklund said.
She is convinced that her research shows that whether a scientist believes in God is determined primarily during childhood, and most of the scientists she studied came from homes where religion was not considered important. Her study, published in the current issue of the journal Social Problems, puts it this way:These data reveal that at least some part of the difference in religiosity between scientists and the general population is likely due simply to religious upbringing rather than scientific training or institutional pressure to be irreligious. That is likely to be hotly debated in the years ahead, and there is a hint in her own research that suggests otherwise. The disciplines she studied include physics, chemistry, biology, sociology, economics, political science and psychology. Physicists did not lead the list of nonbelievers, which may be a bit surprising given the historic battles between the church and Galileo and Copernicus. Of all those surveyed, biologists were least likely to be religious, the study shows. And who's on the hot seat these days? Biologists. Most of the controversial issues today involve various biological fields from stem cell research to evolution to genetic engineering. Physicists can relax. It's pretty much agreed now that Earth revolves around the sun. But biologists are in deep conflict with a society in which 90 percent claim some affiliation with a religious organization. Ecklund said she doesn't know if the lack of religion among biologists is a cause or effect of that ongoing clash. One would guess it's probably both. She made no attempt to define religion. Instead, she relied upon the terms and predictors that have been used in numerous polls of the general public.
So what is religion? And what is God?
No less than Albert Einstein grappled with those questions throughout his life. It is often said that he was religious, and believed in God, but his idea of God was quite different from the deity worshiped by so many today. In his wonderful book on Einstein, Walter Isaacson tells of a dinner party in Berlin when Einstein was asked if he was religious.Yes, you can call it that, he replied. Try and penetrate with our limited means the secrets of nature and you will find that, behind all the discernible laws and connections, there remains something subtle, intangible and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion. To that extent I am, in fact, religious. He spent the rest of his life trying to explain what he really meant. Einstein, by the way, was raised in a religious home.Lee Dye is a former science writer for the Los Angeles Times. He now lives in Juneau, Alaska.
