Parshah Toldot - Genesis 25:19-28:9

GENESIS 25:19 - 28:9
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:
20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

GENESIS 26:1-35
1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

GENESIS 27:1-46
1 And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
2 And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:
3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;
4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.
5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
6 And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,
7 Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.
8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.
9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:
10 And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.
11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:
12 My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.
13 And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.
14 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.
15 And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:
16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:
17 And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
18 And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?
19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
20 And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.
22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.
24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.
26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.
27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:
28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:
29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
30 And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
31 And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.
32 And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.
33 And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.
34 And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.
35 And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.
36 And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;
40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.
42 And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran;
44 And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away;
45 Until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

GENESIS 28:1-9
1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
2 Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.
3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.
6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;
7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;
8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

MALACHI 1:1 - 2:7
1 The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.
2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,
3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.
4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.
5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.
6 A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?
7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible.
8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.
9 And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts.
10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.
12 But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.
13 Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.
14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.
1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.
2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.
4 And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.
6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.
7 For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.

ROMANS 9:6-16
6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

HEBREWS 12:14-17
14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Corporate Media On High Alert Over Manipulated Toner Cartridge On UK Plane
Kurt Nimmo October 29, 2010 (VIDEOS)

Officialdom and authorities jacked up the scary rhetoric this morning in response to a manipulated toner cartridge found on a plane in the United Kingdom that tested negative for the presence of explosive material.Airports in some of the United States were on high alert Friday after investigators found a suspicious package on a plane in the United Kingdom the night before, a law enforcement source with detailed knowledge of the investigation said, reports CNN.The FBI has added to the pre-election hysteria about scary men donning turbans by stating that they were inspecting possible suspicious packages on three jets that flew in from Europe to Philadelphia and New Jersey’s Newark airport, according to Bloomberg. Out of an abundance of caution the planes were moved to a remote location where they are being met by law enforcement officials and swept, the TSA said in a statement.A UPS truck in Brooklyn was also stopped and checked. Because these incidents are still being investigated, we don’t have any further details.a UPS statement said. The suspicious package that is not explosive or apparently threatening but has touched off a corporate media news blitz follows a barrage of absurd government propaganda about impending terror attacks.

In early October, U.S. officialdom told Americans to be vigilant over the prospect of an unsubstantiated terror attack. The exaggerated travel warning was based on information described as intelligence that allegedly pointed to al-Qaeda cave dwellers planning attacks throughout Europe. No specific locations or countries were identified as targets. In early October, authorities warned there would be a Mumbai-style attack in Europe.Prior to the latest scaremongering, Noman Benotman, a Libyan described as a former trainer at an Afghanistan terrorist camp originally established by the CIA, ISI and Saudi intelligence, said a Mumbai-style attack in Britain, France or Germany is still possible. I have information that I consider to be reliable, according to which Al-Qaeda in North Waziristan is training how to carry out multiple parallel hostage taking in order to enforce the release of a prisoner, Benotman told the German magazine Speigel. On Thursday, the arrest of a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, Farooque Ahmed, prompted the NYPD to issue a warning to law enforcement reportedly highlighting the desire of violent extremists riled up by the FBI to target the subway system in New York City, according to Fox. New York City remains a major target for terrorist groups, states the NYPD SHIELD Terrorism Assessment.Earlier in the week, the dead Osama bin Laden supposedly threatened French citizens with kidnappings and death for the horrible crime of banning full-face Islamic veils for women and the country’s presence in Afghanistan. The equation is very clear and simple: as you kill, you will be killed; as you take others hostages, you will be taken hostages; as you waste our security we will… waste your security, said the dead nemesis in a two minute recording. The latest carnival of absurd events present more evidence the government is conditioning us to accept back-to-back non-terror events as an excuse to compromise our civil liberties, accept intrusive technology such as dangerous naked body scanners, and get acclimated to troops on the streets.

Officials examine suspicious packages in US, UK By RANDY PENNELL, Associated Press - OCT 29,10

PHILADELPHIA – A suspicious package containing a toner cartridge with wires and powder was found during routine screening of cargo in the United Kingdom, prompting authorities to scour planes and a truck in the United States on Friday. Searches were done in Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., and New York City.During a basic security screening process in the United Kingdom, officials found a suspicious item on a cargo plane, according to a U.S. government official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.U.K. officials discovered that a toner cartridge on the plane had been manipulated and found wires attached to it and white powder. Tests on the device came back negative for explosives, according to a law enforcement official who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.Concerns about the possibility of similar and potentially dangerous devices shipped elsewhere prompted officials to check other cargo headed to the U.S.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Kristin Lee says the planes in Philadelphia and Newark were being swept. The planes were moved away from terminal buildings so law enforcement officials could investigate. The Philadelphia jet belonged to UPS. A source with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak said officials in Newark were examining a UPS package. In New York City, police responded to reports of a possible explosive in a UPS truck at the Queensboro Bridge, top NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. Browne said the package was removed and was being examined in Brooklyn.Atlanta-based United Parcel Service Inc. said it was working closely with authorities.Police evacuated a freight distribution building at East Midlands Airport in central England after a suspicious package was reported at 3:30 a.m. Police and emergency workers examined the package and lifted the security cordon by midmorning, but Leicestershire Constabulary later said officers were re-examining it as a precaution.Sarah Furbank, a passenger who was about to board a plane out of East Midlands Airport, said that she had noticed an increased security presence. There were quite a few police cars round the edge of the airport, Furbank told The Associated Press. Apparently there was an incident earlier according to staff but they didn't go into detail.Associated Press Writers Eileen Sullivan in Washington, Shawn Marsh in Trenton, N.J., and Sylvia Hui, Jill Lawless and Raphael Satter in London contributed to this report.

Mayoral challenger plans legal action over election

Failed The Blue Mountains mayoral candidate Marshall Heatherington says he's going to launch a legal action against the town and Rogers Television for what he claims are discrepancies with Monday night's election results.Heatherington said Tuesday morning he's furious that he saw preliminary election results broadcast by Rogers Television during its election coverage that had him receiving more than 1,500 votes, only to discover the official results saw him place third with 218 votes. The police are on their way right now, Heatherington claimed in a phone interview with the E-B on Tuesday morning. This is bulls---, he added angrily. How could I go from 1,500 votes to 200 votes? I had more friends and relatives voting for me than that!

Heatherington said he's hired the Collingwood law firm of Shaw, McLellan and Ironside to represent him. What the hell am I supposed to do, he said.Throughout the campaign, Heatherington made allegations that his campaign was being sabotaged. At one point he claimed that pressure was being put on him to withdraw from the race. Later, he complained his signs were being stolen and filed a police report.Blue Mountains chief administrative officer Paul Graham indicated the municipality had no comment on Heatherington's allegations. Rogers Television representatives also declined to comment.Article ID# 2822594

Gold Will Outlive Dollar Once Slaughter Comes: John Hathaway
By John Hathaway - Oct 28, 2010 9:00 PM ET Bloomberg Opinion

First Word from Oct. 27 The world’s monetary system is in the process of melting down. We have entered the endgame for the dollar as the dominant reserve currency, but most investors and policy makers are unaware of the implications. The only questions are how long the denouement of the dollar reserve system will last, and how much more damage will be inflicted by new rounds of quantitative easing or more radical monetary measures to prop up the system. Whether prolonged or sudden, the transition to a stable monetary system will become possible only when the shortcomings of the status quo become unbearable. Such a transition is, by definition, nonlinear. So central-bank soothsaying based on the extrapolation of historical data and the repetition of conventional wisdom offers no guidance on what lies ahead. It’s amazing that there is no intelligent discourse among policy leaders on the subject of monetary rot and its implications for the future economic and political landscape. Until there is fundamental monetary reform on an international scale, most economic forecasts aren’t worth the paper on which they are written.

Telltale signs of future trouble aren’t hard to spot. Only a few months ago, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and a chorus of other high-ranking Fed officials were talking about exit strategies from the U.S. central bank’s bloated balance sheet and the financial system’s unprecedented excess liquidity. Now, those same officials are talking about pumping more money into the system to stimulate growth.

Risky Targets

And they’re not alone: Six months ago, the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, Olivier Blanchard, suggested that raising inflation targets to 4 percent from 2 percent wouldn’t be too risky. This sort of talk must grate on the nerves of our trading partners, China, India, Russia and others, who have accumulated pyramids of non-yielding Treasury debt. No haven there. Return- free risk may be a better way to put it. And bickering among central bankers over currency manipulation and rising trade tensions doesn’t exactly reinforce one’s confidence in a scenario of sustained economic growth and a return to prosperity. The prospects for an orderly unwinding of the extreme posture of global monetary policy are zero. Bernanke, Jean- Claude Trichet and Mervyn King, his counterparts in Europe and the U.K. respectively, are huddling en masse upon the most precarious perch in the history of monetary affairs. These alleged guardians of monetary stability, in their attempts to shore up the system, have simply created the incinerator for paper money. We are past the point of no return. Quantitative easing may well become a way of life.

No Freak Occurrence

The consensus investment view seems to be that the credit crisis of 2008 was a freak occurrence, unlikely to repeat. That is wishful thinking. Monetary policy has painted itself into a corner. Based on our present course, there will be more bubbles and more meltdowns.Financial markets and institutions sense trouble, as reflected in the flight to supposedly safe assets such as Treasuries and corporate-debt instruments with paltry yields, as well as the reluctance to lend by commercial banks. We are stuck in an epic liquidity trap. The irony is, if global central banks succeed in creating inflation, the value of these safe assets will be destroyed. It is a slaughter waiting to happen. In the pedantic mentality of central bankers, their playbook creates just the right amount of inflation. As inflation accelerates, consumers will spend to get rid of their dollars of diminishing value and spur the economy. Once consumers start spending, it will be time to raise interest rates because a solid foundation for prosperity will have been established, they say.

Slender Thread

But whatever the playbook promises, the capacity of financial markets to overshoot can’t be overestimated. The belief among policy makers and financial markets in the possibility of this sort of fine-tuning is preposterous, but it is the slender thread on which remaining investment and business confidence rests. The breakdown of the monetary system will be chaotic. When inflation commences, it will be highly disruptive. The damage to fixed-income assets will seem instantaneous. Foreign-exchange markets will become dysfunctional. The economy will become even more fragile and unpredictable.Gold is an imperfect, but comparatively reliable, market gauge for the extent of current and future monetary destruction. The recent acceleration in the dollar price of the metal to $1,381, a record high in nominal terms, coincided with talk of a new round of quantitative easing and highly visible discord among major nations on trade and currency-valuation issues.

Naysayers’ Bubble

Naysayers point to gold’s price and see a bubble, without understanding that the only acceleration that is taking place is in the rate of decline of paper currency. The Fed is organizing an attack on the dollar’s value, believing that this is the most expedient way to defuse deflationary market forces. The man in the street is unaware, a perfect setup. Inflation can only be successful when the public doesn’t see it coming. The sudden torrent of commentary on gold isn’t the sign of a bubble. Anti-gold pundits provide a great service to those who grasp this historical moment: They facilitate the advantageous positioning of the one asset most likely to be left standing when the dust settles.(John Hathaway is a managing director of Tocqueville Asset Management LP in New York. 19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Indonesia tsunami death toll likely to pass 500
by Bayu Ismoyo - OCT 28,10

NORTH PAGAI, Indonesia (AFP) – The death toll from a tsunami that pummelled remote Indonesian islands is expected to pass 500, an official said Thursday as questions mounted over whether a warning system had failed.Hopes were fading for hundreds of people still listed as missing after a huge wave triggered by a powerful earthquake hit the remote Mentawai islands Monday off the west coast of Sumatra.Meanwhile, on the island of Java in the centre of the disaster-prone archipelago, a volcano which this week killed 32 people again spewed ash and deadly heat clouds, but there were no reports of damage.Disaster response officials said bodies were being found on beaches and coastal areas in the Mentawais, where the tsunami had washed away entire villages.Ten minutes after the quake we heard a sound just like an explosion from outside -- it was then we realised there was a tsunami, said 20-year-old housewife Chandra on North Pagai, one of the two worst-hit islands.Dazed and exhausted, she was searching for her six-month-old baby boy, who has not been seen since the disaster. Neighbours found her husband's body in their village of Muntei Baru Baru.

I know he's dead but I keep praying he's still alive. I'm so tired. I've not eaten for two days, she told AFP.The official death count rose to 370 with 338 missing, but disaster management official Ade Edward said the toll would climb possibly by as much as 200.Of those missing people we think two-thirds of them are probably dead, either swept out to sea or buried in the sand, he said. When we flew over the area yesterday we saw many bodies. Heads and legs were sticking out of the sand, some of them were in the trees. If we add another 200 to the toll it would be at least 543 dead.President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited the area to console the victims, having cut short a visit to Vietnam to attend a regional summit. One survivor broke down and wept as he told the ex-general how they had lost everything.A ship bearing aid including food, water, medical supplies as well as body bags arrived Thursday at Sikakap, on North Pagai. An AFP photographer on board saw hundreds of villagers being treated at a medical clinic, many requiring stitches to open cuts suffered as they were tossed around in the surging waves.Survivors said they had almost no warning that the three-metre (10-foot) wall of water was bearing down on them, despite the laying of a sophisticated network of alarm buoys off the Sumatran coast. The expensive system of tsunami warning buoys was established after the 2004 Asian tsunami, which killed at least 168,000 people in Indonesia alone. An official tsunami warning was issued after Monday's 7.7-magnitude quake but it either came too late or did not reach the communities in most danger.A Jakarta-based official responsible for the warnings blamed local authorities on the Mentawais for failing to pass on the alert, telling reporters: We don't feel there was any mistake.Medical personnel were arriving on helicopters but stormy weather has hampered the delivery of badly needed aid by boat. Troops and at least five warships have also been dispatched.

Australia announced that Jakarta had accepted a million dollars in aid for victims of both disasters, while the United States and several Asian countries have also offered help. The European Commission released 1.5 million euros (two million dollars) in aid and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon offered United Nations help, a spokesman said.On Java, Mount Merapi's fresh eruption raised concerns for local residents who have left temporary shelters -- currently housing about 50,000 people -- to return to their homes on the mountain's slopes. The threat is still there which is why the status still stays at red, government volcanologist Surono said. The southern slope of the mountain was an eerie wasteland earlier Thursday, with houses burnt and flattened, trees scorched and stripped of leaves, and the stench of rotting bodies strong in the air.One of the people killed was an 83-year-old elder appointed by the sultan of Yogyakarta to appease the sacred volcano's restless spirits. He was killed as he prayed in his house after refusing the order to evacuate. The Indonesian archipelago is studded with scores of active volcanoes and stretches from the Pacific to the Indian oceans, spanning several tectonic plates.

Wild storm leaves behind 1 death, damage, injuries
By MITCH WEISS, Associated Press – Thu Oct 28, 11:32 am ET

VALE, N.C. – People from the Dakotas to North Carolina were dealing with the aftermath of a massive storm that roared across the country, unleashing dozens of tornadoes, rain, flooding and eventually snow to some places, leaving behind plenty of destruction and one death in Michigan.Heavy snow and strong winds battered the Dakotas for a second day Wednesday, with visibility reduced by blowing snow and roadways covered by ice, snow and slush. It's not good to be out here for anybody, Highway Patrol Capt. Eric Pederson said. It's just tough going anywhere.Conditions were improving early Thursday and fall-like weather was expected to return later this week, as the front that brought the wild ride makes its way off the East Coast.

In central Michigan, where storms knocked out power to thousands, Kent County Sheriff officials said a contracted utility worker clearing fallen trees was killed Wednesday night in Boyne Township after he touched a live wire.In North Carolina, Yolanda Corona prayed she wouldn't die when winds from the massive storm blew through her neighborhood. She was watching television with 10 relatives when the windows blew out of the living room. The chimney caved in. A tree plunged through the roof. The family huddled in a back bedroom, whispering prayers, crying and holding each other. Somehow, they survived. We thought we were going to die. We were just so scared. We didn't have time to do anything. We all just listened and prayed for our lives, Jessica Vargas, Corona's 18-year-old granddaughter, recalled Wednesday, looking at the family's possessions, which had been strewn around their muddy yard the night before. No one was seriously hurt, but now the family must find somewhere to live. The rare, fast-moving storm that destroyed their home started in the Midwest on Tuesday, moving into the southern and eastern U.S.In suburban Chicago, Helen Miller, 41, was hurt when a branch fell about 65 feet from a large tree, crashed into her car and impaled her stomach. Doctors removed the branch and Miller's husband said she asked him to hang on to it.She wants to save it for an art project or something, Todd Miller told the Chicago Sun-Times. She's a bit of a free spirit, so I ran with it.Eight tornadoes touched down in Indiana, three in Kentucky, and six in Ohio, including one with gusts of at least 111 mph that ripped through a village in the northwest part of the state, destroying several homes. Tornadoes were confirmed or suspected as far east as Virginia and power was out for a time to countless customers.Pat Tanner, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Greer, S.C., said a cold front is moving east and meeting warm, moist air causing instability in the atmosphere and spawning the storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the storm had a pressure reading Tuesday that was among the lowest ever in a non-tropical storm in the mainland U.S.Tornadoes whirled through Racine County, Wis., where two people were injured when a section of roof was torn off a tractor factory, and Peotone, Ill., where three people were injured when a home's roof came off.

Tornado watches and warnings were issued all across the country. In North Carolina, at least 11 people were hurt by the winds that destroyed Corona's home, but none seriously. We just thank God that everyone is safe, said Corona, who had some cuts on her leg. Nearby, Douvhen Hanby was in his backyard when he saw the fast-moving funnel cloud head toward his house. He scrambled inside and yelled for his wife and four children to hit the floor in the living room. Seconds later, the house began shaking. When the winds died down about two minutes later, the family — and their home — were more or less fine. Hanby ran to the next door to a neighbor's mobile home, which had been shredded. He dug through the rubble with his hands, looking for the woman and four children. He found them curled up in a ball under some pieces of tin. They were scared, shaking. Then when it hit them they were alive, they started crying,he said.Associated Press writers Karen Hawkins and Carla K. Johnson in Chicago; Tom Davies in South Bend, Ind.; Doug Whiteman in Cleveland, Ohio; Carrie Antlfinger in Milwaukee; Sofia A. Mannos in Washington, D.C.; and Blake Nicholson in Bismarck, N.D., contributed to this story.

3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

Saudi prince backs moving planned NYC mosque
-OCT 28,10

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A Saudi prince who has aided the imam spearheading a proposed Islamic center near New York's ground zero is appealing for another site not associated with the wound of the Sept. 11 attacks, a report said Thursday. In interview excerpts published by the Dubai-based Arabian Business magazine, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was quoted as saying that moving the planned mosque, health club and cultural center would respect the memory of those killed in the 2001 attacks and allow American Muslims to choose a more suitable location. The comments are reportedly the prince's first public views on the dispute, which has stirred street protests and fiery debates between religious and political leaders over America's freedom of worship versus the lingering anger over the 9/11 attacks.Prince Alwaleed's Kingdom Foundation has contributed to the group run by New York's Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, but said he has given no funds to the planned center.Prince Alwaleed urged the backers of the proposed Islamic center not to agitate the wound by saying, We need to put the mosque next to the 9/11 site. Those people behind the mosque have to respect, have to appreciate and have to defer to the people of New York, the prince was quoted as saying by the magazine, which said the full interview will be published Sunday. The wound is still there. Just because the wound is healing you can't say, Let's just go back to where we were pre-9/11.Prince Alwaleed, who chairs a Saudi investment company that has major stakes in international giants News Corp. and Citigroup, also said Muslims in New York should consider a more dignified location than the proposed site in lower Manhattan.

It can't be next to a bar or a strip club, or in a neighborhood that is not really refined and good. The impression I have is that this mosque is just being inserted and squeezed over there, he said. The Manhattan real estate developer who controls the site of the planned center and is leading the effort to build it declined to comment.Rauf said in a written statement that the project would go forward as planned. While we respect the points of view of other interested observers, we plan to build the community center in this location because we have been part of Lower Manhattan for decades and we want to better serve the needs of our neighbors of all faith traditions,he said.As envisioned, the center would indeed sit next to a tavern, about 2 1/2 blocks from the reconstructed World Trade Center. Other landmarks within a few blocks include City Hall, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Woolworth Building, once the nation's tallest.Online:

Rand Paul is the right man for the Senate OCT 27,10

Character assassination is the most accurate way we know to describe Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Jack Conway’s attack ads that appear to question Republican Candidate Rand Paul’s religious faith. We opined earlier this year that Jack Conway was very anxious to deflect attention away from his support of some of the initiatives of Obama, Pelosi and Reid.Who would have guessed back then that Conway would have stooped to a level this despicable to achieve this goal? Conway’s ad has created a firestorm in the commonwealth and has attracted national attention, most of which has been unfavorable to Conway. Conway’s ad has gotten bad reviews from both sides of the political spectrum.U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., characterized the ad as dangerous.Conway’s ad was called disgusting by Mike Huckabee, a former Republican candidate for president. In an interview earlier this week with Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s Hardball, Conway told Matthews that he was not questioning Paul’s faith.Matthews was having none of that. I think it questions his faith,he told Conway.Even worse, the underlying intent of the ad may have been to convey the message that only Christians need apply for elective office.Attorney General Conway should realize more than most that the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of religion is there to protect nonbelievers as well as Christians and those of other religious persuasions.

For the record, Dr. Paul is a practicing Christian and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, which makes Conway’s ad even more odious.During the campaign, Conway has gone to great lengths to put distance between himself and the trio of Obama, Pelosi and Reid. But when attorneys general in many other states filed suit challenging the constitutionally questionable provision of Obamacare requiring all Americans to buy health care with that provision to be enforced by thousands of new IRS agents, Conway chose not to join them. This failure to act dramatizes the differences between Jack Conway and Dr. Paul.Conway would tend to favor an ever more intrusive and more costly federal government while Paul would not.Paul’s view of the role of government is likely closer to the view of a majority of Kentuckians than Conway’s.For this reason and because our attorney general would stoop so low as to question another’s religious faith in order to be elected, our endorsement goes to Dr. Rand Paul. posted by KYJurisDoctor at 12:46 PM 0

LMPD probes detectives who tipped off prosecutor under investigation
R.G. Dunlop - Courier~Journal Published on: Saturday, October 23, 2010

A Jefferson County prosecutor was tipped off by Louisville narcotics detectives twice in the past two years that he was under investigation for possible drug use or trafficking, according to police records obtained by The Courier-Journal.When investigators learned of the leaks and interrogated the two detectives and the prosecutor last March, all three initially gave false or misleading statements about what happened, those records show. The statements of Matthew C. Conway, the prosecutor, were made under oath.Details of the compromised investigations are contained in nearly 700 pages of documents obtained from Louisville Metro Police under the state open-records law.Conway, the brother of Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, had recently resigned from the Jefferson County attorney's office to enter private practice when he learned of the first investigation in early 2008.At the time of the second leak, in January of this year, Conway was an assistant commonwealth's attorney, a position he still holds.Ronald Russ and Scott Wilson, the two detectives accused of the leaks to Matthew Conway, have been placed in administrative jobs pending the outcome of an internal police inquiry into possible policy violations. Wilson told Conway of the first investigation, and Russ told him of the second one. The two investigations were prompted by separate allegations.

After a criminal investigation by police, the Jefferson County Attorney's Office decided in August that no charges would be filed against Conway, Russ, Wilson or a third narcotics detective, Chauncey Carthan, who was not involved in the leaks but was overheard discussing the second investigation in a restaurant last March.
Carthan's conversation was reported to Jack Conway, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, by a person supporting him. The brothers subsequently conferred with an attorney about the investigation of Matthew Conway, according to the investigative file. The lawyer, Bart Adams of Louisville, then met with Police Chief Robert White to discuss Carthan's conduct, according to the records.Jack Conway's office said in an e-mail to the newspaper Thursday that his only involvement was to advise his brother to obtain legal counsel.White declined to discuss the case, citing the pending police inquiry.Adams declined to comment in detail, saying: After the election, I'll talk to you about anything. I've represented Matt from the beginning. The allegations were baseless. I can't believe police went as far as they did.Neither drug investigation resulted in any charges against Matthew Conway. The three officers all were involved in investigations of him when the leaks occurred.Conway, 34, a graduate of Emory University and the University of Louisville law school, declined to be interviewed by The Courier-Journal.But the police file shows that in response to questions by investigators last March, he said of the drug-related allegations: It's insane. I don't need to traffic drugs. I have money. I have plenty. I work as a prosecutor because I like it.Russ, Wilson and Carthan - who also is named in the department's pending administrative inquiry but has remained in his regular job - declined through a police department spokeswoman to answer questions. Their attorneys also refused to comment.Commonwealth's Attorney David Stengel said in an interview earlier this week that he had reviewed all of the evidence gathered by police and was convinced that Conway was neither a drug user nor trafficker.Stengel said he also concluded that Conway had done nothing wrong except to make a well-intended but boneheaded statement when he denied to police that he had been tipped off by Russ to the second drug investigation.

Stengel said he decided not to discipline Conway for being dishonest because he went back and corrected that immediately. However, records show that Conway actually offered his corrected account four days later, and after another witness advised him that he had told investigators a different story.Conway told investigators he had lied to protect Russ, because I just didn't wanna see him lose his job over this. And, it was foolish and I'm sorry, it is wrong, and, you know, I'm paying for it now, the records show.David Harris, a professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh who writes and teaches about police behavior and law enforcement, said Stengel let Conway off too easily. To admit you lied in an investigation where you were the subject, and it involved law-enforcement conduct, I find that very troubling, Harris said, adding that he found it mysterious that this wouldn't trouble Stengel.Lewis Katz, a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and a criminal-justice authority, agreed. Katz also said Conway's false statements to investigators absolutely have impugned his integrity and, therefore, his ability to represent the state in court. He is hopelessly compromised,Katz said.

The first investigation

In early 2008, Louisville police received information that Matthew Conway might be involved with illegal drugs, prompting Detective Wilson to tell Louisville attorney Scott Roby, who in turn notified Conway, the records show.Wilson told department investigators on March 25 that he had informed Roby of the complaint against Conway because the two attorneys knew each other.I was asking him, man, do you think this is true? Wilson said. Roby, who was not interviewed by police, declined to comment when contacted by The Courier-Journal.Conway and Wilson, both of whom attended St. Xavier High School at about the same time and are longtime acquaintances, they told investigators. After first evading the question, Wilson eventually acknowledged to the investigators that he allowed Conway to read the complaint accusing him of drug involvement.Wilson also acknowledged that, after telling Conway he wanted to search his home, he waited two days to conduct the search, rather than that day or the following day,as he initially told investigators. Nothing incriminating was found.

Upon hearing Wilson's admission about his handling of the case, Sgt. Rick Polin of the department's Public Integrity Unit told him: That's a problem, Scott. It's the same, in my opinion, as, as telling him, hey, you know, watch your back, there's a drug complaint on you. It's kinda like, clean your ----, I'll be over there in two days. When Wilson finally conducted the search, Polin said, it stands to reason there was nothin there.Wilson said he notified Conway before searching his home because he was skeptical of the allegations. It just seemed like it (the complaint) was a BS … domestic kind of issue,Conway was involved in a divorce in late 2007 and early 2008. Someone answering the telephone at a number listed for his former wife hung up when a reporter called. She did not respond to subsequent messages.

The second investigation

During a March 10 interview with investigators, Detective Russ initially denied being the source of the second leak to Matt Conway. But roughly 30 minutes after the questioning ended, Russ returned and acknowledged that he warned Conway when he encountered him in the courthouse in January:Matt, whatever you're doing, you need to quit, cause if you don't, you're gonna get caught. And I said, if you ain't doing nothing, you don't have nothing to worry about, according to the records.Russ told the investigators that he had no idea why he made the disclosure to Conway, adding: I'm sure that my working in narcotics is probably over. I just hope that my career's not over.About a week before Russ met with investigators, Jack Conway received a telephone call from a supporter, businessman Charles Alexander. According to the records, he told Conway that he had been in a downtown restaurant where he heard Detective Carthan discussing the drug investigation involving Matthew Conway. The records reflect varying accounts of what Carthan allegedly said. He told police investigators that while talking with a friend at the restaurant about the drug inquiry, he merely mentioned his investigation and said he had heard a lot of incriminating things about Matthew Conway.Carthan told the investigators that he considered the investigation closed because it had already been compromised when Russ told Conway he was being investigated. But Alexander told police that Carthan overheard him chatting with an acquaintance about fund-raising for Jack Conway, who was locked in a close primary-election campaign with Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo for the Senate.Alexander said Carthan told them not to waste their money on Jack Conway, that he had a case on Conway's brother and that he was dirty (corrupt),according to the records. Alexander declined to discuss the matter with the newspaper.

Alexander then called Jack Conway, who in turn called his brother and said they needed to meet the following day, according to the records.Adams, the attorney, also attended the meeting, at Jack Conway's home, and it was decided that he would report Carthan to Chief White, the records show. Adams went to see White on the morning of March 5.The substance of their conversation could not be determined. Police department spokeswoman Carey Klain said White would not discuss the meeting with Adams, or any related matters, while the department's internal investigation is pending.

Adams declined to comment on the meeting.

Adams and Jack Conway had an interest in the Matthew Conway investigation before the three men met, the records show. When police interviewed Russ on March 10, he said Adams had called him two or three weeks earlier and told him that Jack Conway wanted to know if police were working on a case involving his brother. Russ said he replied to Adams he couldn't discuss the matter. After that conversation, Russ said, Adams called him back two or three more times, saying, Don't worry about it, everything's OK.Asked by investigators what he thought Adams meant, Russ said he assumed people were asking the Conways what was going on. Russ said he told Adams that if police learned he had tipped off Matthew Conway, I'm gonna lose my job, my career, everything.Russ said Adams replied: Oh, you're fine, don't worry about it. Everything's good, don't worry about it.Before The Courier-Journal could ask Adams about his alleged remarks to Russ, he repeated that he had no comment and hung up.

Although he was asked to discuss his knowledge of the investigation involving his brother and the meeting with Adams, Jack Conway's statement did not address either issue. When the newspaper renewed its request for elaboration, Allison Gardner Martin, communications director for the attorney general's office, said Conway does not deny that Adams met with him and his brother. But she declined to address what Conway knew about the decision to have Adams visit White.

Rand Paul Opponent Conway Involved in Obstruction of Justice
Kurt Nimmo October 27, 2010

Forget the corporate media dust-up over a Rand Paul supporter attacking a activist. That incident pales in comparison to a story about the brother of Paul’s opponent in the race for Kentucky’s Senate seat, Jack Conway.Jack Conway and his supporters are involved in a cover-up and an attempt to obstruct justice, but this does not seem to be on the corporate media’s radar screen. On Saturday, the Louisville Courier-Journal published a story about Conway’s brother, Matthew, who resigned from the Jefferson County, Kentucky, attorney’s office to enter private practice after he was tipped off by Louisville narcotics detectives twice in the past two years that he was under investigation for possible drug use or trafficking. Matthew C. Conway was an assistant commonwealth’s attorney, a position he still holds, when detectives tipped him off on a second drug-related investigation. In a clear case of preferential treatment and a cover-up to protect Jack Conway, the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office decided in August that no charges would be filed against Matthew Conway or the narcotics detectives involved in tipping him off.In addition, Jack Conway became involved in criminal behavior. According to R. G. Dunlap of the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Conway brothers conferred with an attorney about the investigation. The lawyer, Bart Adams of Louisville, then met with Police Chief Robert White to discuss [narcotics detective] Carthan’s conduct, according to the records, writes Dunlap.

Commonwealth’s Attorney David Stengel told the newspaper that he had reviewed all of the evidence gathered by police and was convinced that Conway was neither a drug user nor trafficker. Stengel told the newspaper that he concluded that Conway had done nothing wrong except to make a well-intended but boneheaded statement when he denied to police that he had been tipped off by narcotics detectives. Stengel said he decided not to discipline Conway for lying because he went back and corrected that immediately,in other words he was allowed to change his story.Stengel accepted Conway’s corrected account four days later, and after another witness advised him that he had told investigators a different story.Stengel is hardly a neutral party. In fact, he is a Jack Conway supporter. According to, Mr. David Stengel has donated $500 to Jack Conway’s campaign in the past, writes we really want a former Jack Conway donor overlooking this?” Or more pt the point, engaging in a cover-up as Jack Conway attempts to beat Rand Paul and become the next senator from Kentucky.Louisville attorney Scott Roby is also as Conway supporter. Roby told Matthew Conway that the cops were investigating him for either drug use or trafficking, thus allowing him to avoid a police raid. LMPD Detective Scott Wilson had told Roby about the investigation. Conway and Wilson both attended St. Xavier High School at about the same time and are longtime acquaintances, according to the newspaper.

Scott Roby donated $1250 to the Conway campaign.

But it gets worse. It turns out that a Jack Conway supporter, businessman Charles Alexander, was the man who overheard cops talking about the Matthew Conway case in a downtown Louisville restaurant. The narcotics detectives described Matthew Conway as dirty (corrupt).According to, Charles Alexander is a $2400 donor to Jack Conway and a $4600 donor to Barack Obama, so there is little doubt Mr. Alexander was concerned about the troubling allegations, notes Conway and his supporters are involved in a cover-up and an attempt to obstruct justice, but this does not seem to be on the corporate media’s radar screen. Instead, we are harangued with absurd stories about Rand Paul, Aqua Buddha, and a fraternity prank invented by an anonymous woman.Jack Conway is involved in a brazen attempt to cover-up a police investigation of his brother. Supporters of his political campaign facilitated obscuration of justice. Is this the sort of man the people of Kentucky want representing them in Washington? In the name of objective journalism and fairness, the corporate media needs to cover this story immediately instead of inventing new ways to tear down the Rand Paul campaign.

EXCLUSIVE: Uncovered 9/11 Footage Shows FBI Director Asking Firefighters About Secondary Hits On WTC .Amazing video also shows city officials hurriedly leaving after South Tower collapse Steve Watson Wednesday, Oct 27th, 2010

An intriguing video has appeared on You Tube that appears to show a FDNY film crew being interviewed in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks by the the director of the FBI’s New York office, who has suspicions that one of the World Trade Center towers took a secondary hit before collapsing. The video appears to be part of NIST’s recent FOIA releases and therefore has not been seen before now.On first viewing it appears to be nothing special, just the horribly familiar scenes of dust and rubble from the aftermath of the attacks. However, it contains a stunning exchange between officials and firefighters. The action appears to be taking place immediately after the collapse of the South tower and before the collapse of the North tower. The film crew exits a building and make their way along the dust and debris littered streets. At around 2 mins 50, a man in a suit approaches the crew and announces himself as FBI, Barry Mawn.Mawn (pictured below with Rudy Giuliani) was at that time the director of the FBI’s New York office.Mawn then asks the FDNY crew a question in the form of a statement – That tower got a secondary hit? The firefighters respond by saying they are unsure but they heard a rumbling and ran for their lives as the tower then collapsed. The audio is difficult to hear but one of the firefighters then says he saw it blow right out the side of the building to which Mawn asks that was the plane right?.

The firefighter then states I don’t know if it was a plane or an explosion. As they continue their description of events the noise of a jet overhead interrupts them as people begin to panic. Someone, presumably another FBI agent shouts is that ours? to which Mawn replies yeah that should be ours.At this point a large gathering of suited individuals walks into view and a woman in the group yells go to city hall.
Mawn then asks where is the mayor?, from which it can be deduced that this group is affiliated with Rudy Giuliani and they are hurriedly leaving the scene. The woman leading the mayor’s group then curses at reporters telling them to get the f*** out of here. One commenter has speculated that the reporters are with Pat Dawson, the first NBC News correspondent to report from the scene of the attacks at the World Trade Center.

Watch the video:We have previously covered the fact that Giuliani and his group were warned that the South tower was about to collapse, before it happened. This video of them leaving the scene just after the collapse of the South tower dovetails directly with that information – another huge finding to emerge from the NIST video releases.
The video is a fascinating piece of evidence to be added to the hundreds of other accounts and descriptions of secondary explosions in and around the WTC on 9/11. This clearly indicates that the FBI believed that a secondary attack, aside from the use of air planes was under way.Indeed, this backs up previous evidence that the FBI’s initial working premise was that trucks packed with explosives aided the collapse of the twin towers. This fact was reported by USA today journalist Jack Kelly:The details were also covered by MSNBC’s Rick Sanchez, who also reported that officials strongly believed a van packed with explosives parked underneath the towers had contributed to their collapse.Barry Mawn has other intriguing connections to the events of 9/11. He was a close friend and associate of John O’ Neil, the former deputy director for the FBI who quit his job out of frustration that his investigations into Al Qaeda terrorist plots were being blocked. O’Neil became head of security for the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001. His body was discovered in the rubble after the attacks after he had helped people escape the towers before they collapsed.

Mawn was also the individual who explained to the media how police and the FBI found the passport of one of the alleged hijackers, Satam Al Suqami, in the rubble during a grid search of the area close to the World Trade Center.Mawn was later involved in the investigation of the Anthrax attacks, which he initially believed originated from US military sources. Mawn resigned from the FBI in March 2002 following the break down of this investigation. The information revealed in this short piece of footage once again goes to show that there is still masses of evidence regarding the 9/11 attack that we are yet to discover. It should encourage 9/11 researchers to continue to dig deeper and demand a new independent investigation.

Beware Obama’s Fabian Window CANADA FREE PRESS
By William Kevin Stoos Thursday, August 20, 2009

If you feel the ground shaking under your feet; if the America you once knew seems to be changing daily; if you feel that you have less and less control over your life and the country is being governed from the top down, then you should take heed.

Someone is remoulding the world nearer his heart’s desire, and he has the biggest hammer in the world. If you want to understand Obama’s agenda, you need to peer into the Fabian Window. The Fabian Window is a beautiful, if sinister, thing. Although it currently hangs in London, it should be hanging in the White House, for the message in the window is an eerie reflection of what is happening in the United States before our very eyes.Built to commemorate the founding of the Fabian Socialist Society, the Fabian Window contains images that are clear, unapologetic and, as a friend of mine once said—brazen. It is one thing, as Lenin said, to howl like wolves in order to live among wolves; however it is quite another to advertise the fact that you are a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Yet, the socialists who constructed the window had no qualms about advertising the fact that they had a hidden (or not so hidden) agenda when it comes to reshaping the world. The window contains the image of two men—founders of the society—hammering the globe (from the top down no less) with sledgehammers—imposing their will on the world so to speak. They are not voting; they are not persuading; nor are they preaching to the masses. They are hammering the world with very big hammers. If imposing one’s will from the top down does not remind you of the current occupant of the White House, then you have been living in a cave for the past eight months. The Czar and his Commissars are imposing their will on America every day, ramming legislation down the collective throat of America—legislation that Congress itself does not even read. And we are paying hundreds of billions of dollars, ceding our personal freedom, and witnessing the centralization of power in the federal government to an extent never before seen since we declared independence from the last dictator to rule America over two centuries ago. Are we being governed from the ground up—by the consent of the people? Or, is someone imposing their will upon us—hammering us from above?

More ominous still—the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Amazingly, the Fabian Window contains an image—just above the fellows hammering the world—that is as clear as it is foreboding: the socialists are wolves in sheep’s clothing. I often wonder why they did not choose a less ignoble animal. What about a courageous lion? A proud bull? A vigilant hawk? A noble horse? No, they chose a wolf—a cunning, ravenous, devious, and scary critter—and cloaked him in a sheepskin. Why? Because, as Lenin taught, if you want to operate in a capitalist society you must disguise yourself. Put the sheepskin on and you can easily mingle with the flock. Until you decide to shed the skin and consume the flock. The most frightening thing about the image is that the socialists make no apology about being wolves and living among sheep.

Creeping socialism has pervaded our government. We can deny it, wish it were not so, and the captive media can dismiss the notion as right wing propaganda, but the truth is plain. Power is being consolidated daily in the central government—at the expense of the governed. The current occupants of the White House look and dress like capitalists and profess to believe in freedom—all the time hammering the world and remoudling it nearer their heart’s desire—which, of course, is the motto inscribed on the Fabian Window. Does it say, remould it nearer the will of the people? Or, remould it nearer the will of the voters? No, the socialist window commands them to: remould it nearer [their] heart’s desire. This should send chills down the spine of every freedom loving American. We should question what is in their hearts and the wisdom of giving them the hammers.Fast forward to the present day. Is someone pounding our world with a very big sledge hammer, imposing his will on the country? Or do we feel as if we have control over our lives? You be the judge:

—Obama tours the world apologizing for the greatest country on earth, which has given away more of its wealth and sent more of its young men and women to die for people in faraway countries than any other nation in history. Is he remoulding our history—about which we should be proud?

—Obama denigrates religion, covers up religious symbols when he speaks in churches, and proclaims that we are not a Christian nation. In fact, we are a Christian nation, but not exclusively so, and far more tolerant of all believers and disbelievers than the Arab countries from whom he courts favor. In those countries you may be maimed, banished or killed if you are not Muslim. Freedom of religion in those countries is but an empty phrase in constitutions that exalt Islam over all other religions. Is Obama remoulding our religious heritage?

—Obama fosters class envy by punishing those who create jobs and wealth, financing his grandiose programs—which we cannot afford—by taxing the wealthy (anyone making over $150,000?) and redistributing income. From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs sounds a lot like Obama’s economic philosophy. The only problem is that Karl Marx coined the motto. Is our economic system being remoulded nearer his heart’s desire?

—Obama stated in no uncertain terms that if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them [sic] and implicitly threatened any company that wanted to start a new coal-fired energy plant. Since when do Presidents brag about punishing such an important industry—one that furnishes the vast majority of the energy which heats and lights our homes and businesses? Since when did government become the enemy of capitalist enterprise? Should big government selectively punish some industries and take over others? Is he remoulding the relationship between industry and big government nearer his heart’s desire?

—Obama proposed the creation of a domestic security force. Hitler had them too—they were called the SA and the SS. To whom will they swear allegiance and why do we need them? We already have a domestic security force. We call them police. Is he remoulding the state’s police power nearer his heart’s desire? And to what end?

—Obama proposes a national health care system which will inevitably lead to the elimination of private health insurers, budget-induced rationing, cost overruns, congressionally-mandated premiums, charges, doctor salaries, and care. Is he remolding the private relationship between the doctor and patient? Is he seeking to consolidate life and death decision-making power in the federal government—soon to have access to everyone’s private health information when all our records are computerized?

—Obama rammed through the biggest spending bill in history—hundreds of billions spent through the TARP bill—and few, if any, of our elected representatives had any interest in reading it before voting to pass it. What do you call it when an elected body, ostensibly representative of the people, passes a bill without reading it—just because the Great Leader says so? Dictatorship. In effectively bypassing the legislative process altogether, imposing his will on Congress, and prevailing on them to pass this huge spending bill—just because he wanted them to—Obama has fundamentally remoulded our republican form of government nearer to his heart’s desire. When the day comes that a President of the United States can compel the Congress to spend hundreds of billions of dollars by passing a bill they never read, it is fair to ask: why a Congress at all? What is the need? We should simply ask what the President wants, and then pass it by acclamation—the way the Soviet Politburo used to do.

—Now we witness the health care debate in dozens of town hall meeting across the country. When people show up and vocalize their opinions—passionately at times—criticizing the administration’s proposed plan for national health care, Obama and his minions decry the citizens as NAZIs. They suggest that it is somehow disloyal, mean- spirited, or racist to disagree with, or criticize, the President. Just a few short months ago, we heard liberal politicians declare that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. Put simply, it all depends on whose ox is getting gored. When the Democrats and liberals were out of power, dissent (even mean spirited dissent suggesting President Bush should be killed or impeached) was applauded by the Left. Now that Obama the Secular has risen to power, dissent is not tolerated, but condemned as un-American. The Fourth Estate, which traditionally kept Presidential power in check, is now nothing more than a cheering section. Obama has remoulded the relationship between the press, the citizens and their government. The captive press now denounces criticism of the Great One as disloyal and unpatriotic. The thud of the sledgehammer is getting louder and more frequent every day. Those who care about the country and about individual freedoms should take heed of that sound. Those who worry about the unbridled power of the federal government would do well to study the Fabian Window. It should be installed in the White House; it is how the President sees the world. We have given him a very big hammer indeed. And he is using it to remould us in ways we could never have imagined. Starting in 2010, it is time to take his hammer away.

Independence Day – November 2nd The alien left is blowing up everything they can By Laurie Roth OCT 26,10

Already we are seeing the waves of illegal and shameful activity flowing around the country as the desperate and compromised left tries to steal an election. There are numerous tight races, many of which are draws across the country. These will be decided in just days now.In Washington state, (my state) the race between the extreme liberal, Patty Murray and Dino Rossi is a classic leftist horror show. Murray has been openly enlisting illegal aliens to canvass for votes in many neighborhoods. Dan Stein writes of this bold phenomena with people like Maria Gianni knocking on voter’s doors, even telling people she is an illegal alien. Various states are pushing to get illegal aliens the right to vote now, all out in the open. There is also a strong push by some to get folks who are in the long process of becoming a citizen, legal immigrants the right to vote now instead of waiting. What about the word US citizen do people not understand? What about law do they also not understand? The bottom line is that votes are so coveted that we see organized crime like activity each election, not enforcing REAL voter ID at voting locations, pushing and campaigning for millions of illegal alien votes, pushing for dead people, felons and others to vote and many times. Then there are the precious voter machines. Who controls them, is the voting data secure and do hackers get in and change things? Yes and Yes!

Already, Fox news reported that in Nevada, where the critical race between Harry Reid and Sharon Angle is a close one, many voters in Boulder City have complained that when they went to the polls and looked at their voting sheet on the computer screen, the ballot was already marked for Harry Reid. This didn’t happen once or twice but was reported several times. Now, in a state where a critical race is neck and neck and Sharon Angle is slightly ahead, isn’t it fascinating that Harry Reid, the liberal, is already marked on the voting page? Now, how many liberals are already listed on electronic voter pages all across the country? I thought it was horrifying and bad enough that so many felons, dead people and illegal aliens would vote, but as I have suspected all along, voting machines are also being manipulated and hacked into. I want to know, who is running these computers in every city and state. How is security being handled, have there been background checks and how in God’s green earth does Harry Reid’s name magically appear already written on the voter sheet again and again? Why aren’t we all on paper ballots?

In Arizona, illegal aliens, felons and multi-state residents are already voting unabated. Like so many states, Arizona offers the honor system for voter registration. This acts as a huge and safe invitation, regardless of any voting laws and restrictions in place, as a huge magnet for illegal alien, felon and multi-state voters. Who would know??? I believe it is a serious crime that this and other administrations have not made it a law by now to offer verified proof as to who voters really are, not easy to pretend, proof. Illegal aliens and felons have no right at all to vote, yet they are coveted and canvassed by the left for votes. This is not only a voter fraud and election manipulation issue but a national security issue in every sense.

Each week now on Thursdays I explore on my national radio show,, illegal alien and border security issues with editor and publisher, Michael Carlin, Editor of Century City News. He has an idea called the Why Not Plan that I haven’t heard before and quite like. Although he is open to putting illegal aliens on a potential path to citizenship, a form of amnesty, he talks boldly of the need, FIRST, to close the border, put our troops on the border and use real technology and communication with the Mexican Government to close it and stop the endless hemorrhaging, drug traffic, terrorist flow and other mystery people coming across. None of our Presidents seem to get this right. Obama doesn’t, Bush didn’t, on and on. We have to approach this very real, illegal alien challenge from a real and new perspective that includes, law, business, compassion, accountability and national security issues. One thing is for sure and then some. No one has the right to vote who is not a US citizen and who can’t really prove who they are in my opinion. Here the left wants illegal alien and felon votes but they can’t get it right with our military votes! This makes me angrier then almost anything in the election cycle. Even though congress put a law in place back in 2009 requiring county election officials to send out ballots to our military 45 days before Election Day. Even with this in place, a growing number of states did not send out their overseas absentee ballots on time for our military to vote. The Justice Department has apparently come down on New York, New Mexico and Nevada for not sending out the ballots on time. Washington was late as well.It is absolutely insane that we would entertain all kinds of mystery and illegal votes but screw over our brave and faithful military overseas. I could care less what the reason is state by state. It is 1000% unacceptable! These elections in just a few days are critical to our nation. We must right this ship and yes, we are going to be dealing with massive voter fraud, all kinds of mystery people voting, overseas military not getting their votes in on time, and mystery distortions and liberal names written on electronic voter forms. That means just one thing after no doubt endless law suits and legal actions, EVERYONE MUST VOTE AND VOTE LIKE YOUR COUNTRY AND LIFE DEPENDED ON IT.

The US empire is striking back Obama By Laurie Roth OCT 21,10

Obama and the progressive leftists are doing exactly what we would expect desperate losers to do, name call, create enemies, cultivate crises and try to distract. Don’t you just love how so many conservatives are Witches deviants want to destroy or stop social security hate poor people and illegal aliens on and on. Along with all the name calling and slander flinging by the left are the absurd heroic and persecution portrayals of Obama.Just this week we heard Harry Reid in a speech in Nevada comparing Obama to the Chilean Miners in his focus and heroism. It was like the Chilean miners, but he, being the man he is, rolled up his sleeves and said I am going to get us out of this hole, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said in Las Vegas on Sunday. Is Obama going to be compared to Mother Theresa next week? Obama is trying to paint a bigger than life movie action film for democrats and independents to respond to at the mid terms. In one of his recent mid term pitch talks he said the Empire is striking back.Think about this statement for a minute. Just what does the Empire’ mean in his mind? The empire is the people apparently, the scared, fearful, non objective people who are responding against him out of stress. That would explain our actions and his lowering poll numbers right?…..WRONG!Obama offers the nation absurd statements on the verge of the mid terms, Axelrod and Obama are promising more jobs next year, and warning people that the Empire is striking back. Darth Vader is not only back and very angry, but hundreds of millions of Darth Vaders are also mobilized and not happy. Obama can call us whatever he wants. We know the truth. Obama is the real Darth Vader and is trying to turn us into an evil empire. We aren’t the empire at all, he, his czars, progressive leftists and congress are.

The American people will rise up at the mid terms however and stop the Obama empire’s movement and plans. They can talk all they want about the fear, stress and crisis type reactions of the American people but it won’t matter now. We will do what we have to do to fix and save our country, bring back our freedom and way of life. Nothing this President and congress has stood for and campaigned for has defended our constitution, Judeo-Christian values and freedoms. Obama has instead attacked and challenged them all.Pick your movie and battle Obama. If you need us to be the empire striking back, the tornado that lifts up Dorothy’s house and places it in Oz, or the stars of that classic movie Ground hog day where everything repeats itself each day, consider it done. Just know that in truth, the American and constitutional empire is striking back, the progressive/leftist house has been ripped off its foundation by an outraged tornado and will fly away soon. Finally, we will continue to stand against Obama and the progressive leftists day after day, again and again until every last one of them is gone.

Nevada voting machines automatically checking Harry Reid's name; voting machine technicians are SEIU members By: Mark Hemingway Commentary Staff Writer
10/26/10 6:12 PM EDT

Clark County is where three quarters of Nevada's residents and live and where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's son Rory is a county commissioner. Rory is also a Democratic candidate for governor.Since early voting started, there have been credible reports that voting machines in Clark County, Nevada are automatically checking Harry Reid's name on the ballot:Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

Something's not right, Ferrara said. One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong.Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said there is no voter fraud, although the issues do come up because the touch-screens are sensitive. For that reason, a person may not want to have their fingers linger too long on the screen after they make a selection at any time. Now there's absolutely no independently verified evidence of chicanery with the voting machines (yet), but it is worth noting that the voting machine technicians in Clark County are members of the Service Employees International Union. The SEIU spent $63 million in elections in 2008 and is planning on spending $44 million more this election cycle -- nearly all of that on Democrats. White House political director Patrick Gaspard is formerly the SEIU's top lobbyist, and former SEIU president Andy Stern was the most frequent visitor to the White House last year.

Just in Nevada, the SEIU has given a lot to groups that are heavily vested in the state -- in just one prominent example, the SEIU gave $500,000 to the Patriot Majority PAC, which has spent $1.3 million against Reid's opponent Sharron Angle. They've and have dropped large sums directly on candidates:

NV-3 Joe Heck (R) Oppose $140,000.00

NV-3 Dina Titus (D) Support $344,984.00

NV-Senate Sharron E. Angle (R)Oppose $225,000.00

Now the county voting technicians aren't unique here -- many of Clark County's employees are also represented by the SEIU. But it is worth mentioning, the SEIU is hyperpoliticized and has seen its fair share of corruption. (It certainly seems more questionable than Diebold, the voting machine manufacturer with Republican ties that was at the center of many conspiracy theories on the left during the Bush administration.)Unions increasingly have a major financial stake in election outcomes, both as a matter of their own election expenditures, and as a function of what they stand to gain if their legislative agenda is enacted. Should they really be responsible for tabulating the votes? That's certainly something voters ought to think long and hard about.Below is Clark County's SEIU contract -- On Page 75, in Appendix A, voting machine technicians are listed as positions represented by SEIU.

3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Lauren Booth Converts to Islam After Holy Experience
by Chana Ya'ar OCT 24,10

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s sister-in-law, Lauren Booth, has converted to Islam after a trip to Iran. The 43-year-old broadcast journalist, who works for Iran’s English-language Press TV, said she had a holy experience while visiting the Fatima al-Masumeh shrine in the city of Qom, a shot of spiritual morphine.Upon her return to Britain, she told British publication The Mail in an interview published Sunday that she decided to immediately convert to Islam. Now I don’t eat pork and I read the Koran every day. I’m on page 60, she told the publication. I also haven’t had a drink in 45 days, the longest period in 25 years.

Booth added that she now wears the hijab (hair covering) when she leaves her home, prays five times a day and visits the local mosque when I can.Booth spent several months in Gaza two years ago after traveling there illegally on a Free Gaza ship that symbolically broke Israel’s blockade of the region. After Israel allowed the vessel to dock in Gaza port, Booth was unable to leave, since she had no visa or other legal transport papers with which to enter Israel from the region. Nor was she able to leave via the Rafiah Crossing, since the group had no legitimate exit visa, since Gaza is not a sovereign nation – nor a visa for entry into Egypt.

Snickers in a concentration camp?
Despite her claims of the concentration camp conditions in the region that are worse than Darfur Booth was photographed buying Snickers candy bars and soft drinks in a well-stocked food store in Gaza. She and her brother-in-law, who currently serves as the Middle East envoy for the Quartet of peace-keeping nations (the U.S., Russia, European Union and United Nations), are reportedly barely on speaking terms. Booth, who is a half-sister to Blair’s wife, Cherie, said she hopes her conversion to Islam will help change her brother-in-law’s presumptions about the Muslim faith.

Restoration planned for Bethlehem Nativity Church By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH, Associated Press Writer – Mon Oct 25, 2:40 pm ET

BETHLEHEM, West Bank – The Palestinian government announced Monday it is planning an ambitious restoration project for the ancient church that marks the traditional birthplace of Jesus, an important Christian site that draws millions of visitors. The renovation of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity is expected to take several years and millions of dollars, according to Ziad Bandak, an official overseeing the restoration.Bandak said this is the first comprehensive restoration project on the church since it was completed in the fourth century. He said the roof, pillars and mosaics in the church all need work.Rain leaking in has caused great damage to all of those, which led us to move quickly to repair the damage, Bandak said, adding that the project would also aim to fix general wear and tear on the centuries-old church. The fortress-like church, built in the classic style with a long central area under a basilica lined with columns on both sides, is dark and damp. The main Christmas event, the Midnight Mass, is celebrated in the 19th century St. Catherine's Church next door to the Church of the Nativity. The Palestinian government has appealed to European and Arab nations to help fund the project, Bandak said. He said the three churches that administer sections of the church have agreed to the project. Officials from the Latin, Greek and Armenian churches could not be reached for comment. Their rivalries have often led to fistfights between monks at the holy site.

Bethlehem was once the site of frequent battles between the Israeli military and Palestinian militants, but a drop in violence in recent years has boosted tourism to the town.Foreign and local worshippers pack the old church at Christmas. As many as 2 million people visit the church every year, according to Palestinian Tourism Minister Khouloud Daibes. The restoration won't hinder tourism and pilgrimage and worshipping in the church. Visitors and pilgrims are always welcome to visit the church in all phases of the restoration, she said.On Monday, the church was littered with building materials as workers assessed the scope of needed repairs.A group of Italian artisans hovered over one of the church's mosaics, studying the tiny stones.
We are checking the colors, the stone, the conservation, and after that we will do the restoration, said Stefano Defen, one of the restorers. There is a lot to do.

JOEL 3:2
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

Heres the scripture 1 week = 7 yrs Genesis 29:27-29
27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

DANIEL 11:21-23
21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.

DANIEL 9:26-27
26 And after threescore and two weeks(62X7=434 YEARS+7X7=49 YEARS=TOTAL OF 69 WEEKS OR 483 YRS) shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary;(ROMAN LEADERS DESTROYED THE 2ND TEMPLE) and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.(THERE HAS TO BE 70 WEEKS OR 490 YRS TO FUFILL THE VISION AND PROPHECY OF DAN 9:24).(THE NEXT VERSE IS THAT 7 YR WEEK OR (70TH FINAL WEEK).
27 And he( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Palestinians renew threat to seek UN recognition By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH, Associated Press Writer – Mon Oct 25, 1:08 pm ET

BETHLEHEM, West Bank – The Palestinian president said Monday that Israel has been taking unilateral steps for decades by building settlements, so the Palestinians might take one of their own — asking the United Nations to recognize their independent state.President Mahmoud Abbas was replying to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the only path to peace is negotiations. The threat of unilateral action indicates the depth of the crisis over peace talks restarted just last month by President Barack Obama.Israeli settlements in the West Bank are at the heart of the current stalemate. Netanyahu imposed a 10-month halt to new construction in settlements last November to bring Palestinians back to the table. But it took nine months of intensive U.S. mediation to restart direct talks.

Netanyahu faced stiff opposition to the building restrictions from inside his government and said he would not renew the measure, which expired Sept. 26. Construction has begun on more than 500 new homes since then, according to settler officials and a count by The Associated Press.Palestinians insist they will not hold talks while settlement construction continues. They have been suggesting recently that they would seek other solutions if the talks fail. One possibility would be asking the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war. That would not dislodge the Israeli military from the West Bank, dismantle the 120 Jewish settlements there or give Palestinians free access to east Jerusalem. But it could isolate Israel and change the diplomatic equation.

On Sunday, Netanyahu criticized this idea.I think any attempt to circumvent it by going to international bodies isn't realistic and won't advance true peacemaking in any way, Netanyahu said. Peace will be achieved only through direct talks.During a visit to Bethlehem on Monday, Abbas responded that Israel has been taking unilateral measures in the West Bank for decades — especially by building settlements.
Settlements are a unilateral step done by Israel, Abbas said. Is there anything clearer than settlements and invasions and roadblocks and all that has been done on Palestinian land? Given that reality, Abbas said, Netanyahu should not lecture the Palestinians about a step they might take in the future, which is to resort to the United Nations.Palestinian officials have mentioned this possibility before, but Abbas' statement was a rare on-the-record reference to the idea.It is unlikely that Abbas would make such a move unless Obama's quest to reach a comprehensive peace deal by next September fails, meaning talk of unilateral action may be a mere pressure tactic.According to the interim Palestinian-Israeli peace accords of the 1990s, the Palestinians could declare an independent state any time after 1999, but they have not done so. Among other changes, this could lead Israel to cancel the interim accords, which provide Palestinians with seaport privileges, tax revenues, trade and cooperation with Israel in fields like electricity, fuel supply and cellular phone channels.Israel's day-to-day friction with the Palestinians surfaced again Monday when an Israeli protest group published a new set of photographs that appear to show soldiers mistreating Palestinians. The images, released Monday by the Breaking the Silence group, appeared to show Israeli soldiers holding assault rifles to the head of a blindfolded Palestinian man and spraypainting Be right back on the wall of a Gaza home. The photos were said to stem from Israel's invasion of Gaza nearly two years ago.

It was impossible to independently confirm the authenticity of the photos, but they resemble others that have been released in recent months. The military said it regretted that the group published the photos rather than bringing them directly to the army to be investigated. It said the pictures did not reflect the values of the military. In two other recent incidents, material posted on YouTube and Facebook appeared to show soldiers dancing in a West Bank city and posing next to captive Palestinians.

Settlers confirm work has begun on up to 600 homes By KARIN LAUB, Associated Press Writer – Mon Oct 25, 3:01 am ET

JERUSALEM – A senior settler official says that work has begun on up to 600 new homes in West Bank settlements since Israel lifted its curb on such construction Sept. 26, mirroring recent findings by The Associated Press and the Israeli watchdog Peace Now.Foundations are already being dug for at least 350 apartments, while construction of another 200 to 250 homes is in more preliminary stages, the official said Sunday. A second settler official said he believes some of the construction is already more advanced, and that out of the total being built, 400 to 500 apartments have reached the stage of foundation work. Both officials are familiar with the construction and spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release figures on the delicate topic — which has stalled U.S.-led peace talks and brought significant pressure on all sides to find a diplomatic solution.Assessing the extent of post-freeze construction is difficult because Israel's government has declined to release information, and settlement officials generally won't provide detailed data.Peace Now, which is conducting an extensive survey of building activity, has reported that work has begun on at least 600 new homes since restrictions — which Israel self-imposed in November 2009 for a predefined 10-month period — were lifted.

The AP count found that — as of early last week, about three weeks after the settlement curbs expired — work had begun on at least 544 apartments, including infrastructure, leveling ground and digging foundations. The count was based on visits to 16 settlements and interviews with several settlement mayors who were asked about housing starts in their areas, but did not always elaborate on the stages of construction. The building spurt of the past weeks — whatever its exact extent — compares to a total of just under 1,900 settlement housing starts in all of 2009, or 36 per week, as reported by the government. Comparing cases where foundations are being dug only, the figure of 500 in recent weeks would be about three and a half times the previous pace.Peace Now researcher Hagit Ofran said she estimates that the pace is at least two and up to four times faster than before.
Part of the difficulty in nailing down the comparison to official data is that the government provides only delayed and periodic updates and does not start counting until construction progresses from leveling land to digging foundations.Ofran said she believes construction tends to proceed very quickly these days from preliminary stages to foundation work because settlers and contractors are concerned about the possibility of a renewed freeze. When building restrictions were imposed last November, contractors were allowed to continue building settlement houses whose foundations had already been poured. In this way — with the addition of allowing exceptions to the freeze on new starts — construction actually proceeded at a fairly brisk rate throughout the moratorium.Ofran said that during the moratorium, settlers had prepared well for the resumption of construction. It is not a surprise, because we knew this was coming, she said of the building spurt. Unless the government imposes a freeze, the settlers will continue to build.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said any new construction would be kept to a minimum, but has not elaborated. Settler leaders have complained that the government is holding up several major construction projects.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he will only resume talks once building restrictions are reimposed, arguing there is no point negotiating while Israel continues to build on land the Palestinians want for a future state.About 300,00 settlers already live among 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank, and another 200,000 Jews live in east Jerusalem — both of which Israel captured in the 1967 war and are claimed by the Palestinians for their state.Associated Press writer Amy Teibel contributed to this report.

7.7-magnitude quake hits off Indonesian island By ALI KOTARUMALOS, Associated Press Writer – Mon Oct 25, 6:59 pm ET

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A powerful earthquake hit off western Indonesia late Monday, briefly triggering a tsunami warning that sent thousands of panicked residents fleeing to high ground. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The 7.7-magnitude temblor struck at a depth of 13 miles (20 kilometers) off Sumatra island, said the U.S. Geological Survey. At least five towns in the provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra were badly jolted, officials and witnesses said, as were the nearby Mentawai islands.Everyone was running out of their houses, said Sofyan Alawi, a resident in the city of Padang, adding that, with loudspeakers from mosques blaring out tsunami warnings, the roads leading to surrounding hills were quickly jammed with cars and motorcycles. We kept looking back to see if a wave was coming, said 28-year-old resident Ade Syahputra.Areas closest to the epicenter of the 9:42 p.m. (10:42 a.m. EDT, 1442 GMT) quake were sparsely populated, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, said Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official.A 5.0-magnitude aftershock hit less than an hour after the original quake, and the region remained on alert for more jolts. A 6.1-magnitude aftershock hit at 2:37 a.m. (3:37 p.m. EDT, 1937 GMT), the U.S., Geological Survey reported.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. The city of Padang was badly shaken one year ago by a 7.6-magnitude quake that killed at least 700 people and flattened or severely damaged 180,000 buildings. That followed the 2004 tsunami off Sumatra's westernmost province of Aceh that was triggered by a 9.1-magnitude quake and killed 230,000 in a dozen countries, roughly half in Indonesia.

Floods kill 56 in Thailand
-OCT 25,10

BANGKOK (AFP) – The worst floods to hit parts of Thailand in decades have left at least 56 people dead, officials said Tuesday.Bangkok is on standby with thousands of sandbags and pumps as flood water from the north runs downstream and could coincide with high tide, but so far no major flooding has been reported in the capital. The authorities estimate that about 2.8 million people across the country have been affected, with homes submerged and farmland or cattle destroyed. On Monday the death toll had stood at 41, according to the Emergency Medical Institute of Thailand, mostly in central and eastern areas of the country.

Cyclone kills 27 in western Myanmar; 15 missing
– Mon Oct 25, 12:10 pm ET

YANGON, Myanmar – A cyclone that struck Myanmar's western coast late last week killed at least 27 people, damaging thousands of buildings and displacing tens of thousands of people, state television reported Monday.Cyclone Giri arrived from the Bay of Bengal on Friday evening with winds of up to 110 mph (180 kph), lashing several coastal areas of western Rakhine state that are home to poor families who live mostly in bamboo huts. It later moved into central Myanmar.Monday's report was the first announcement from the government on casualties and damage from the category 4 storm. The military government tightly controls information and also delayed reporting on — and asking for help with — the devastating Cyclone Nargis, which struck Myanmar in 2008, killing 130,000 people. The junta was widely criticized for what were called inadequate preparations and a slow response to the disaster. This time, the government credited its preparation and warning system with saving lives, saying the casualty toll was low because it had managed to help 53,000 villagers evacuate before the storm. In one coastal town in the country's center, Kyaukphyu, three camps set up by the Myanmar Red Cross and the Social Welfare Ministry were housing more than 5,000 people, said Andrew Kirkwood, the resident representative of aid group Save the Children.

A resident from Kyaukphyu, Chit Chit, who was contacted by phone, said that many homes had their roofs blown off and that many areas remained flooded. She said communications were cut over the weekend but had been restored.Other nearby towns also saw most of the buildings flattened, Kirkwood said. In one, only seven homes out of several hundred remained standing. The television report said that, in all, 4,000 houses, monasteries and government buildings were destroyed in Rakhine state. It said 27 people had been killed and 15 were missing.

Richard nears Gulf of Mexico, no threat to U.S. oil
By Isela Serrano – Mon Oct 25, 6:19 pm ET

CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) – Tropical Storm Richard weakened to a tropical depression on Monday as it moved across southern Mexico and headed for the Bay of Campeche, but did not look to pose a major threat to Mexican or U.S. oil operations. The storm is expected on Tuesday to pass near the platforms that produce the bulk of Mexico's 2.6 million barrels per day of crude oil, but state oil monopoly Pemex said it was only taking the usual precautions and all operations were normal. Most forecasting models suggest Richard will dissipate before nearing major oil and gas installations in the U.S. Gulf, and even if the storm did not fizzle out it would likely be too weak to disrupt any output. When Richard emerges into the Gulf, it should be a very weak cyclone, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The official forecast shows Richard becoming a remnant low in a day or so, but this event could very well occur sooner, the center said in a statement.

Richard dumped moderate rains in the Caribbean resort city of Cancun, and Mexican authorities reported no injuries or major damage.About 200 villagers returned home after relocating to shelters over the weekend, local authorities said. The storm made landfall on Sunday just south of Belize City, blowing roofs off houses and knocking out electricity as tourists and residents huddled in emergency shelters. The government of Belize reported no injuries or deaths from Richard, which came ashore as a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale. The weakening storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, was located 55 miles southeast of the Mexican port of Ciudad del Carmen, and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph, the Miami-based center said.Richard is expected to produce 1 to 2 inches of rain across northern Guatemala and the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Campeche, the hurricane center said.Hurricanes occasionally pass over the Yucatan Peninsula and can disrupt Mexican oil operations. In September, Hurricane Karl forced a brief shutdown of 14 minor Mexican wells in the Gulf, with no significant impact on production.Guatemalan authorities reported no significant damage or casualties due to the storm, and the head of the country's coffee growers' association said the crop would probably not be affected.Richard was the 10th hurricane of the busy 2010 Atlantic storm season, which has experienced five major storms. The United States has so far been spared landfall by any significant storm.

Nigeria cholera death toll rises above 1,500: U.N.
By Yinka Ibukun – Mon Oct 25, 1:03 pm ET

LAGOS (Reuters) – Cholera has killed more than 1,500 people in Nigeria since January in one of the worst outbreaks in years, with heavy rains spreading the disease particularly in poor northern states, the United Nations said on Monday.According to U.N. figures, 1,555 people have died from the disease in Africa's most populous nation since January while 38,173 cases have been reported, Martin Dawes, regional spokesman for the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) told Reuters. The figure is more than four times the death toll reported by the government in August. U.N. officials said the numbers were based on the latest reports from the World Health Organization, Red Cross and government agencies. The rains this year have been very severe ... (the outbreak) is considerably worse this year, Paula Fedeski, spokeswoman for UNICEF in Nigeria, said. The highest death tolls were in the northern states of Borno, Katsina and Bauchi although there were also cases in southern states including Rivers and Cross River in the Niger Delta, the heartland of Nigeria's oil industry.

The number of reported cases so far this year is almost three times the number for the whole of 2009, although Fedeski said that was partly because of improved data collection.Heavy rains and flooding in rural areas where safe drinking water and sanitary facilities are scarce have fueled the outbreak of the disease, which is generally spread through food and water contaminated with bacteria.Nigeria's Health Ministry said in August the death toll from an outbreak concentrated largely in the north had risen to 352, but warned of a nationwide risk.(Writing by Nick Tattersall)

Haiti official: Cholera outbreak is easing By JACOB KUSHNER, Associated Press Writer - OCT 25,10

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – A cholera outbreak showed signs of easing Monday after killing more than 250 people in a sweep through rural Haiti, but experts warned that the earthquake-devastated country's first bout with the disease in decades is far from over.Aid groups were joining the government in a race to purify water and warn people throughout the countryside and the capital, Port-au-Prince, where the Jan. 12 earthquake left more than a million survivors in squalid stick-and-tarp camps that are ripe for the waterborne disease. The worst part is over, but you can always have a new spike of cholera, said Health Ministry Director Gabriel Timothee. He said the situation is beginning to stabilize with only six new deaths reported since Sunday.

Haiti, which had not suffered a cholera outbreak in at least 50 years, is the latest developing country to be afflicted by the disease that sickens an estimated 3 million to 5 million people a year and kills 100,000.It is common in regions such as the Indian subcontinent and sub-Saharan Africa — an outbreak in Nigeria this year killed at least 1,500 people, according to the United Nations — but it has been rare in industrialized nations for the past 100 years. The disease, spread through feces-contaminated drinking water or food, leads to vomiting and watery diarrhea which, if not treated, can kill a person within hours. It is preventable with clean water and sanitation, but both can be hard to find in corners of the Western Hemisphere's poorest country. Some of the 1.3 million people living in the capital's tent camps already fear the worst.I'm afraid because the water we're drinking here is not treated properly. Any time I drink the water it makes my stomach sick, said Joseph Sidsen Guerry, 20, who lives in the small Jeremie camp in central Port-au-Prince.

Health groups working to keep the disease from spreading beyond the central valley where it emerged last week are focusing on treating the ill, strengthening medical centers with isolation wards and educating the public about the disease. The biggest challenge for us is the amount of misinformation, said Julie Schindall of Oxfam, which trained the host of a radio call-in program to promote good hygiene practices in rural Petit Riviere near the outbreak's epicenter in the Artibonite region. We have to make sure they know what is true and what is not true.Schindall said some Haitians were still drinking from the contaminated Artibonite river because others did so without getting sick.Water purification tablets and oral rehydration salts — used to counteract potentially lethal dehydration caused by diarrhea — have been widely distributed in the region where the river or rainwater remain the only water source for many, said Louise Ivers, an official with the aid group Partners in Health.

For now, officials say their efforts have been making gains.Timothee said at least 259 people have died since early last week and more than 3,300 have fallen ill, but he emphasized that no cases had been confirmed as originating in the crowded capital. Five patients were diagnosed with cholera in Port-au-Prince over the weekend, but officials said they got sick elsewhere.Michel Thieren, a program management officer for the Pan-American Health Organization, said the outbreak has been largely confined to the Artibonite. But he warned: We are expecting a gradual spreading of cholera in the country, and the way it will do that is still unpredictable.Aid groups stress that community outreach is a key part of their prevention efforts. The California-based International Medical Corps has enlisted Haiti's Boy Scouts to distribute fliers educating people about proper hygiene, spokeswoman Margaret Aguirre said. Her group also was dispatching mobile teams of doctors and nurses equipped with IV fluids, cholera cots with a hole for human waste, and disinfectant.Experts said the disease is likely to spread eventually to the Dominican Republic, which is on the same Caribbean island as Haiti. Now that cholera has established itself with a strong foothold in Haiti, it probably will not go away for several years, said Dr. Jon K. Andrus, PAHO's deputy director. Cholera is not a major threat in countries such as the United States because of advanced water and sanitation systems. On average, only about seven cases a year are reported in the U.S., and they almost always involve a traveler infected in another country.

Cholera has played a central role in the development of the field of public health: A cholera outbreak in London in 1854 was successfully battled by a London physician, Dr. John Snow, who helped lay to rest the long-held theory that the disease is caused by miasma, or foul-smelling air.Snow deduced that polluted water coming from a Broad Street pump was the source of illness. He is considered the father of the disease investigation field known as epidemiology.Associated Press writers Mike Stobbe in Atlanta and Mike Melia and David McFadden in San Juan, Puerto Rico, contributed to this report.(This version CORRECTS region's name to Artibonite.)

As bedbugs creep out NYC, tourists crawl away By SARA KUGLER FRAZIER, Associated Press Writer - OCT 25,10

NEW YORK – New York City's bedbugs have climbed out of bed and marched into landmarks like the Empire State Building, Bloomingdale's and Lincoln Center, causing fresh anxiety among tourists who are canceling Big Apple vacations planned for the height of the holiday season. Some travelers who had arranged trips to New York say they are creeped out about staying in hotels and visiting attractions as new reports of bedbugs seem to pop up every few days. And officials in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration are concerned about the effect on the city's image and $30 billion tourism industry. The discoveries of the bloodsucking pests at high-profile places are often not full-blown infestations, or even in public areas. Bloomingdale's reported finding exactly one bug in the famous department store, the Empire State Building had them in the basement and Lincoln Center's were in a dressing room.

But those reports, along with bedbug discoveries in movie theaters, hotels and clothing chain stores, are causing skittish travelers to call off trips planned months ago.Industry professionals — who have privately told city officials that they are nervous about bedbugs hurting New York's reputation — say publicly that they are not aware of any bedbug-related cancellations. But several would-be tourists tracked down by The Associated Press say they are aborting their trips here because they fear the pests. It sounds like you can get them anywhere, any time of day and not know it until you get home, said Patty Majerik, from Baltimore. She said she may not travel to Manhattan next month with her children, ages 7 and 10, like they do every year around the holidays to shop, catch a Broadway show and see the Radio City Christmas show.I've got four people traveling on a train, in cabs, going to stores and theaters, and they could be in any of these places? I hate to say it, but I doubt we're going to come this time, Majerik said.Suzanne Baldwin said she is forfeiting money spent on reservations for a November trip to New York City from her home in Florida. She had already grown accustomed to checking hotel rooms for bedbugs — and has done so in New York before — but she is now overwhelmed at the idea that the bugs have spread beyond hotels.

We thought long and hard about this trip, she told the AP in an e-mail. However, we decided, knowing we would lose quite a bit of money from nonrefundable tickets, it was not worth the worry.Susannah Johnston, a yoga teacher who lives in the New York City suburbs, said that she and her husband wanted to stay overnight in Manhattan last weekend after attending a late concert, but that bedbugs thwarted their plans.
We started researching hotels and prices, and then we read the reviews, she said. Every one of the hotels we were considering had a guest horror story regarding bedbugs.Bloomberg said Monday he was concerned about the effect of bedbug hysteria on the city's reputation. You don't want anything that would dissuade people from coming here, he told reporters. Hopefully these things come and go, and this will go quickly.Sightings of the rust-colored bugs, about the size of an apple seed, have surged in New York and around the nation in recent years. Experts have theorized that an increase in global travel and the banning of certain pesticides may be partly responsible for their spread. And then, exterminators were caught off guard when they began reappearing. It's gone up incredibly. We were completely blindsided by this, said Jody L. Gangloff-Kaufmann, urban entomologist in the integrated pest management program at Cornell University. And for years, nobody knew about it, so reservoir populations were formed here and there.City officials and experts say it is difficult to fully measure the problem, partly because of bedbug stigma and the lack of solid data. The Bloomberg administration fielded 537 complaints in fiscal year 2004, while in 2009 there were nearly 11,000.

It isn't known how closely those complaints reflect the actual spread; not everyone with bedbugs calls to complain, and some calls could be based on fears instead of true cases, Gangloff-Kaufmann said. The most reliable data come from a city survey that began only last year, she said. For the first time, the city health department included a question about bedbugs on its annual community health survey. In 2009, it found, more than 6 percent of New Yorkers — one in 15 adults — said they had battled the pests in the past year. Until the AP reported those results this year, data had been limited to government statistics on bedbug complaints and private pest control company surveys.Bedbugs are famously difficult to eradicate; they hide in many more places than beds and can go a year without feeding. Bloomberg recently joked on David Letterman's Late Show that bedbugs are probably tougher than New York City's notoriously hardy rats. The city's tourism agency, NYC & Company, said it has not seen mass cancellations because of bedbug fears. But officials said some New York hotels, museums and other attractions that depend on tourists have told the administration they are concerned the bedbug rumors will scare travelers away.
Tourism officials are keeping an eye on the situation and are trying to decide how to address the public relations side of it.New Yorkers themselves are also feeling more anxious, as bedbug reports have spread to office buildings and schools. I have definitely had people talking about it more, checking more for signs of bedbugs — it's on people's minds and changing the way they live their lives, said Lisa Tischler, a Manhattan psychologist who treats anxiety disorders. People are really taking it seriously, and there are people who are out of control about it.The online travel site TripAdvisor, where travelers post reviews and ask questions of other tourists, said it has seen a 12 percent increase in New York City posts referencing bedbugs. The site compared the first eight months of 2010 with the same period the previous year.

Drought has Amazon tributary at record low levels By TALES AZZONI, Associated Press Writer - OCT 25,10

SAO PAULO – A severe drought has dropped water levels on a major Amazon tributary to their lowest point since officials began keeping records more than a century ago, the government reported Monday, cutting off dozens of communities who depend on the river for work and transportation.Floating homes along the Rio Negro now rest on muddy flats, and locals have had to modify boats to run in shallower waters in a region without roads. Some riverbanks have caved in, although no injuries have been reported. Enormous fields of trash and other debris have been revealed by the disappearing waters. The drought is hurting fishing, cattle, agriculture and other businesses, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in nearly 40 municipalities. Amazonas state officials said more than 60,000 families have been affected by the drought. The government has distributed about 600 tons of food, water and medicine, much of it by helicopter to isolated villages. It is a difficult situation for the community, resident Josimar Peixoto told Globo TV. The families are struggling here. The government's geological service said Monday that the Rio Negro was measured at a depth of 13.63 meters (44.72 feet) the previous day near the jungle city of Manaus, the lowest since a measuring system was implemented in 1902.

Manaus, in northern Brazil, is where the Rio Negro is at its deepest and where it merges with the Amazon River — meaning some places upstream are nearly completely dry.The previous low was 13.64 meters (44.75 feet), recorded in 1963.An engineer and hydrology expert with the geological service said rains in remote parts of the Amazon will begin raising river levels, but it will take time for that water to reach Manaus. The water is expected to start rising again in about three to four weeks, Daniel Oliveira told The Associated Press. In June 2009, the Rio Negro hit a record high of 29.71 meters (97.5 feet) near Manaus following months of heavy rains.

At that time, flooding across the Amazon basin left more than 400,000 homeless and killed more than 50 people. Those high waters caused the people now experiencing drought to build new, higher floors onto their stilt houses in an effort to escape the rising river.Cycles of flooding and drought have been common in the world's largest remaining tropical wilderness, but they have been more extreme recently, shifting from record floods to record drought in relatively short periods of time, experts say. Many suspect global warming could be driving the whipsaw changes.A report last year from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, which tracks weather patterns, stated that its weather models forecast rising global temperatures because of ongoing greenhouse gas emissions and project a decrease in rainfall across much of Brazil due to warmer waters in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans causing changes in wind patterns across South America. The document says the changes could affect Brazil's energy sector: More than 70 percent of the nation's energy comes from hydroelectric sources, which would be hurt by reduced rainfall.Associated Press writer Bradley Brooks contributed to this report from Rio de Janeiro.
