Thousands flee as storm batters coast

MANILA Thousands of people were forced to flee their homes as storm waves battered the western coast of the Philippines yesterday. Officials said that three people were killed in Taal Lake, south of Manila, after their vessel capsized. They added that about 5,500 people from Luzon, the main northern island, had been moved to emergency shelters. The storm heaped further misery on the area which had suffered an earthquake on Tuesday, while in the north of the country 22 people died when Typhoon Mitag struck on Monday. (AP)

Big waves raise typhoon deaths to 22
By TJ Burgonio, Alcuin Papa
Inquirer - Mla time) 11/29/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Typhoon Mina (international codename: Mitag) on Wednesday dissipated while tropical depression Lando (Hagibis) moved farther away from the country, but not before spawning large waves in the western coasts of Luzon and Mindanao and leaving a death toll of 22.Two small passenger ferries were crossing Taal Lake in Batangas south of the capital Manila when strong winds brought about by Mina triggered huge waves and overturned the boats Tuesday night, rescuers said.Three people were confirmed drowned, while about 30 others were rescued. Six others remain missing. The big waves that buffeted coastal villages in Pangasinan, the Zamboanga peninsula, Northern Mindanao and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao on Tuesday night were spawned by storm-induced winds, not the magnitude 6 earthquake that shook Northern Luzon earlier on Tuesday, the weather bureau said.We should have improved weather by tomorrow and up to four days, said senior weather specialist Robert Sawi of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The bureau has, however, warned fishermen and sailors of big waves, particularly in the western coast of Northern Luzon because of the prevailing northeast monsoon. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) on Wednesday said 19 other people have been confirmed dead while eight others were missing because of Mina, which ripped through the country earlier this week, weakened to a tropical depression and had dissipated over the Philippine Sea.

Tropical depression

Lando, which also weakened into an active low pressure area and killed 14 people last week, went west toward Vietnam and then made a dramatic U-turn over the South China Sea before returning to the Philippines.Weather branch chief Nathaniel Cruz of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said by Sunday, Mina and Lando would have exited and we will have good weather conditions in most parts of the country. He said a low-pressure area swirling east of the country is not likely to enter the Philippines. The NDCC said that of Mina’s fatalities -- from drowning, electrocution and landslides -- seven came from Camarines Sur, one from Camarines Norte, three from Palawan, two from Apayao, two from Kalinga, three from Cagayan and one from Isabela province.Included among the missing were Philippine Air Force pilots, Captains Bonifacio Soriano and Gavino Mercado, who were flying a PAF S-211 trainer jet over the Kalayaan islands in Palawan when the aircraft went missing last Monday.

The NDCC said big waves threatened coastal villages in Jolo, Sulu, Pangasinan, La Union, Misamis Oriental and Zamboanga City.In Jolo, Sulu, a 3-year-old boy was killed as strong waves hit two coastal villages on Tuesday night. The waves also destroyed at least 50 houses in the villages of Tulay and Busbus.Yusop Isnani, village chair of Busbus, said the 3-year-old boy was killed when his house was washed away by the waves. In Iligan City, residents fled their homes as huge waves hit and destroyed houses in coastal villages.

In Misamis Oriental, a storm surge inundated 53 villages in 16 towns on Tuesday night, forcing 1,160 families to flee their homes. No casualties were reported.Ten-foot-high waves struck coastal villages at 7 p.m. Tuesday, leaving 800 homes damaged and destroying a 12-meter seawall in Naawan town.Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno declared 16 towns on alert level as PAGASA warned that more big waves could be expected. The Macalajar Bay in Misamis Oriental has been declared one of the storm surge-prone areas in Mindanao.

Surge of water

In Lingayen, Pangasinan, a surge of water from the Lingayen Gulf flooded homes in coastal areas, sending residents into a panic as tsunami rumors swept the province following an intensity 6 earthquake. The provincial disaster coordinating council (PDCC) said 280 families were moved to evacuation centers here and in the towns of Binmaley, San Fabian, Labrador and Bolinao and Dagupan City.Paterno Orduña, PDCC executive officer, said the water started to rise at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and subsided at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.Orduña said what worsened the situation were text messages circulating that warned of a tsunami following the earthquake whose epicenter was 86 km west of Lingayen.Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), explained to callers that the quake’s magnitude was not enough to trigger a tsunami and that if ever a tsunami occurs, it does so some 30 minutes to one hour after the earthquake.PAGASA blamed the huge waves on the strong winds triggered by the weather disturbances and the northeast monsoon.

The strong winds are associated with the surge of the northeast monsoon and the two storms, Cruz said.Vicente Malano, OIC of PAGASA’s field operations center, said the earthquake did not cause the waves which did not happen until 15 minutes after the earthquake. Fire shuts most of main Canada-U.S. oil pipeline
Thu Nov 29, 2007 4:00 AM GMT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Enbridge Inc (ENB.TO: Quote, Profile , Research) has shut down four of its main pipelines that supply over 2 million barrels per day (bpd) of Canadian oil to the U.S. Midwest due to an explosion and a fire in Minnesota, the company said on Wednesday. The Calgary, Alberta-based company said all Enbridge pipelines in the vicinity of its Clearbrook, Minnesota, terminal -- Lines 1, 2, 3, and 4 -- were immediately shut down and isolated and emergency crews dispatched to the site of the fire.It did not give any further details about the total line capacity that had been shut down and said it was unable to say when the line might be able to restart.According to the Enbridge Web site, those four lines have a capacity to carry slightly over 1.7 million bpd of crude oil, natural gas liquids and oil products.

Two Enbridge workers were missing due to the explosion and fire, it said. The cause of the explosion has not been determined, Enbridge said. The explosion took place about 3.0 miles southeast of the Clearbrook terminal, Enbridge said, adding that appropriate authorities and emergency officials had been notified.Enbridge lines carry the lion's share of Canada's crude oil exports to the United States. It can carry about 2.2 million bpd of oil a day from Canada's oilfield and the Alberta oil sands.(Reporting by Bill Berkrot; Editing by Jonathan Leff and Ramthan Hussain)

ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.

JOEL 3:2
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

ZECHARIAH 14:1-9 King James Bible
1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:
7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.
8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

PM: Temple Mount not negotiable
By HERB KEINON, JERUSALEM POST CORRESPONDENT WASHINGTON

Israel's sovereignty over the Temple Mount is not up for discussion, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Wednesday, a day after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said a Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem was key to an agreement with Israel.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, US President George W. Bush, and PA President Mahmoud Abbas wave after a trilateral meeting wrapping up the Annapolis conference. What occurred in Annapolis and Washington over the last two days had no bearing on the situation on the Temple Mount, Olmert said. Olmert's comments came at a press briefing with reporters following his final meeting with George W. Bush in the White House, and just hours before returning to Israel.

Olmert's meeting with Bush, his third in just over 48 hours, was believed to have dealt with the Iranian nuclear situation. The prime minister said that the activities to halt Iran's nuclear program needed to continue at full force. He would not elaborate beyond that, saying only - when asked about his discussion on Iran with Bush - that he always finds his meeting with the president captivating. Although Olmert said in Annapolis on Tuesday that he hoped an agreement with the Palestinians could be reached by the end of 2008, and he said Israel would exert all efforts to achieve this, he stressed that Israel had not committed itself to any deadline whatsoever. He also stressed that it was completely clear to all parties that the agreement would not be implemented until all the Palestinian requirements under the road map - including dismantling the terrorist infrastructure - are fulfilled. He emphasized that this included both the West Bank and Gaza. Olmert took a sober look at the Annapolis conference, saying that he had said for months that it would not be a historic or dramatic event that would change the face of the Middle East, but rather something that would give a push to what had been moribund Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. We do not need to lose proportion, he said. This was not something meant to change history. At the same time, he said that the Saudis' participation at the conference should not be underestimated, even if Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal was not willing to shake his hand.

Yesterday he sat and clapped after the speeches, Olmert said of Faisal. That is a fact clear to everyone. It is significant that the Saudis felt it important to contribute [to the process]. Regarding Syrian participation in the conference, Olmert said he was glad to hear the angry Iranian reactions to the fact that Syria sent a delegation. Olmert, relating to a decision to essentially appoint a US official to determine when the sides have implemented the road map, said that Jerusalem had no problem with the US in the role, and there was no one more suitable in that role than the Americans. Olmert said he was pleased with Bush's strong statement during his speech Tuesday at Annapolis that Israel was the homeland for the Jewish people. We will carry on the negotiations with that as a given, whether they accept it in the beginning or not. The end result will be clear, that Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, Olmert said. Olmert also said he spoke to every single major American presidential candidate in the last few days and they were all supportive of the Annapolis process, and all showed great goodwill toward Israel.

Banks scourged by falling dollar
VNECONOMY updated: 29/11/2007

The supply of dollars is now so profuse that it is always higher than the banks’ purchasing capacity. Banks now buy dollars in dribs and drabs, as they do not have enough VND.The volume of dollars flowing into Eximbank these days is 30% higher than the same period last year. In the first 10 months of the year, some US$2bil went in. In the last few days, the bank has purchased US$5-7mil every day.Currently, Vietcombank, the biggest foreign currency trader in Vietnam, always quotes the dollar purchase price equal to the sale price, at VND16,048/USUS$1 (as of November 27), reflecting the bank’s desire to bring as few dollars as possible.

An official from Vietincombank said that the supply of dollars is very profuse but the bank is not able to purchase dollars in large quantities, as the bank does not enough VND.The official said that banks are now incurring losses due to the devaluation of the dollar. However, banks still have to buy dollars at prices higher than the levels they want since they must adhere to the floor level set by the State Bank of Vietnam. In principle, when there is an excess of foreign currency supply, the central bank would buy, in order to prevent devaluation which harms exports. However, the central bank has yet to interfere in the market. There are no signs that the central bank will buy up dollars from commercial banks.People are now exchanging the dollar for VND at a tremendous rate to prepare for Tet shopping. Meanwhile, making dollar deposits in foreign banks is not profitable for Vietnamese banks, as the world’s interest rates are reducing due to the FED’s rate cuts.

The supply and demand imbalance of the dollar has become more serious as commercial banks cannot find borrowers. Import-export companies, the biggest clients, rarely borrow dollars at the end of the year; they need VND to pay local companies. The Vietincombank official said that the demand for VND loans is increasing, but the bank is trying to limit outstanding VND loans. Meanwhile, the bank is ready to satisfy any and all dollar loan demands.Ho Huu Hanh, Director of the HCM City Branch of the State Bank of Vietnam, acknowledged that dollars are now in excess. Nguyen Van Hung, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Branch of the State Bank, also said that banks are facing dollar abundance. However, he said that Hanoi’s banks would not bear insurmountable pressure as Hanoi is the banking centre.Mr Hung said that there would be no significant changes to the VND/USUS$ exchange rate towards year end. Banks top priority now is to help curb inflation, he said.

Uganda: No Details Yet On Bundibugyo Strange DiseaseThe Monitor (Kampala)29 November 2007
Jane Nafula & Al-Mahdi Ssenkabirwa - Kampala

THE Ministry of Health has failed to establish the type of strange disease that has hit the western district of Bundibugyo. The Director General of Health Services, Dr Sam Zaramba, told Daily Monitor yesterday that more blood samples would be sent to South Africa and the Centre for Disease Control in the US for further scrutiny. We sent three different blood samples to South Africa and the US but they tested negative. But we will send more samples to help us identify this disease, Mr Zaramba said on telephone. The highly infectious strange disease was first reported in Bundibugyo in August. It has similar symptoms to the Marburg hemorrhagic fever which struck Kamwenge District in western Uganda, killing two people and infecting four others at Kitaka mine. It comes in form of a rush, severe headache, vomiting and diarrhea.

The disease has so far claimed 16 lives while over 40 people have been infected. However, both local and foreign medical experts have since failed to establish its name and cause. The first samples which were taken to South Africa and the US when the disease had just hit the district tested negative for viral hemorrhagic fever.
The disease is spread through contact with infected people or staying within close range with victims. The victims have therefore been isolated and are being given treatment. We give them general medication like antibiotics to treat things like rashes, Dr. Zaramba said.We are also concentrating on sensitising people about infection control methods , he added.Recently, the ministry of health, the World Health Organisation and Makerere Medical School dispatched a response team to trace contacts of the sick persons and carry out public awareness campaigns on preventive measures.

Dr Sam Okware -the Director of Community Health said they suspected the disease to be Leptospirosis- a rare disease caused by small mammals. The first victims reportedly fed on goat meat which infected the entire family, according to Dr. Okware.

EU ministers set to back market supervision reform
Wed Nov 28, 2007

BRUSSELS, Nov 28 (Reuters) - National market watchdogs in the European Union will lose some sovereignty under a roadmap to reform financial supervision, according to a draft report by EU states set to be agreed by finance ministers next week. But there is no mention in the draft report seen by Reuters of creating a new, pan-European superwatchdog, politically a step too far for now.The rapid pace of financial integration is giving rise to cross-border groups that want to save money by reporting to just one main regulator.Maintaining a nationally based system of supervision with purely voluntary pan-EU cooperation is no longer seen as adequate to oversee a capital market without borders.

The review of the so-called Lamfalussy structure of pan-EU supervision, based on three committees made up of the bloc's 27 national banking, insurance and securities supervisors, will not spur radical change, the conclusions in the draft report reveal.
Even some more modest ideas have been diluted as smaller EU states in particular are wary of being eclipsed by London, Paris or Frankfurt, homes to many of the big cross-border groups.EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy wants the three supervisory committees to take all decisions by qualified majority rather than the consensus-based approach currently used. While recognising the importance to continue making their decisions by consensus wherever possible, ministers are set to agree that the committees should change their charters so they can apply qualified majority voting where necessary, it states in the conclusions.

The conclusions in the draft report include a roadmap which states:
-- the European Commission is to assess by April 2008 how to clarify the role of the three committees

-- EU finance ministry and central bank officials will examine by April 2008 how the mandates of national supervisors could include a formal objective of EU supervisory convergence and cooperation, rather than just purely a domestic focus

-- the three committees will by mid-2008 explore ways of strengthening the application of their guidelines on regulation without changing their legally non-binding nature

-- by mid 2008 the committees and the Commission should suggest a timetable for introducing EU-wide formats companies could use for data requirements.

-- EU financial laws will be examined by the end of 2008 to see if provisions could be added to introduce the voluntary delegation of tasks among supervisors overseeing the company.

WORLD GOVERNMENT

DANIEL 7:23-25
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

DANIEL 12:4,1
4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

REVELATION 13:1-3,7,8,12,16-18
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell,
save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

REVELATION 17:3,7,9-10,12,18
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Conspiracy Deniers Delight In Their Attempt to Debunk the Obvious By John F. McManus Published: 2007-11-27 20:44

ARTICLE SYNOPSIS:
Evidence that the leaders of Canada, Mexico and the U.S. are working to merge the three countries into a North American Union has alerted and alarmed many. It has also stimulated some conspiracy deniers. But their denials skip over numerous reasons for concluding that a plot, similar to the one that brought 27 nations under the rule of a European Union, does indeed exist.

COMMENTARY:
The Boston Globe's Drake Bennett provided many facts that have led to the conclusion that a conspiracy designed to merge the three nations of North America actually exists. But even though he offered some evidence that it does exist, he confidently told his readers that there is no such thing as the plot being pointed to by many. In other words, we should continue to trust our leaders who have nothing but our best interests at heart. Bennett admits that Messrs. Bush, Martin, and Fox created the Security and Prosperity Partnership in 2005. And yes, Martin and Fox have been succeeded by Calderon and Harper who have continued to meet with Bush in subsequent SPP sessions. He mentions, but refuses to consider, the hugely important significance of the Council on Foreign Relations' publication Building a North American Community that, he notes, seeks a common North American security perimeter, the development of a biometric North American border pass, and the adoption of a North American tariff.

Bennett pointed to Professor Robert Pastor, one of prime movers behind these supposedly benign initiatives, as the author of book calling for economic integration and an amero currency for the three nations. And he quotes the warning of financial analyst Steve Previs that the amero will have a big impact on everybody's life in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. But, not to worry, it's all a paranoid conspiracy theory, says the Globe's writer. And he points to agreement about his assessment issued by professors at the University of Florida and Harvard University. That ought to do it, right? Aren't professors the final arbiters? Given the small amount of evidence supplied by Bennett, it's unlikely that anyone would agree that a conspiracy exists to merge the three nations, overturn the Declaration of Independence, and scrap the U.S. Constitution and its Canadian and Mexican counterparts. The amount of evidence needed to persuade anyone to arrive at a conclusion will vary. For those who might need a few more indications that a conspiracy does exist, we offer a few bits of evidence left out by Bennett. For instance:

No sooner had the Security and Prosperity Partnership been launched than the U.S. Commerce Department made space available in its offices for the personnel of 20 working groups to carry out the designs of the new organization. Of note is the fact that no one in Congress had been apprised of this development. Why bypass Congress if there's nothing to hide? In September 2006, high-level government officials, media heavyweights and corporate leaders met behind closed doors at a plush resort in Banff, Canada. At their gathering, labeled the North American Forum, they discussed energy, security, border infrastructure, and North American integration. We know about the secret meeting because a Canadian who attended the affair and didn't like what he heard blew the whistle and shared some of its documents. After the three-day session, attendee Thomas Shannon (a U.S. Assistant Secretary of State) told an audience in Canada, The North American Forum is a parallel structure to the Security and Prosperity Partnership. Other U.S. attendees included former Secretary of State George Shultz, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (replaced at the last minute by Joint Chiefs Chairman General Peter Pace), former U.S. Trade Representative and NAFTA co-author Carla Hills, Wall Street Journal columnist Mary Anastasia O'Grady (who has yet to mention the meeting in her column), and several other former cabinet officers and government officials. Counterparts from Canada and Mexico represented their countries. If nothing sinister was going on at this gathering, why was it conducted in secrecy?

As far back as 2002, Mexico's Vicente Fox called for the establishment of a duplicate of the European Union for the entire Western Hemisphere. He is not alone in desiring such a momentous step. British researchers Christopher Booker and Richard North wrote in their 2003 book, The Great Deception: The Secret History of the European Union, about the false promises and incremental steps that have led to what they termed the most spectacular coup d'etat in history. Just as the people of Europe were led astray, we in America are facing similar deceitful beginnings leading to a similar coup d'etat. At the August 2007 meeting of the Security and Prosperity Partnership, hundreds of helmeted, armed, and tear-gas-wielding soldiers and police guarded the site, the Montebello Resort in Western Quebec, to assure that the public would not have access to the proceedings. U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins assured the world in the Canadian press that no one involved in these discussions is interested in, or has ever proposed, a North American Union, a North American Superhighway, or a North American currency. But Robert Pastor, who is the originator and purveyor of these very topics, was at the Montebello SPP gathering.
More evidence can be assembled for any Doubting Thomases. But space limitations must be honored. Suffice it to say that the border hasn't been secured, as journalist Jerome Corsi has indicated, because there's no intention to secure it. A single political and economic entity known as the North American Union doesn't allow for individual national border security. But a merger of the three nations requires a common security perimeter that ignores national boundaries. Which is why a growing number of Congressmen, alerted by the conspiracy theorists, have co-sponsored legislation to block the NAU and scuttle all aspects of the entire plot. John F. McManus

Tory concern at EU super-president idea
By Bruno Waterfield in Brussels and James Kirkup
Last Updated: 1:44am GMT 26/11/2007

Gordon Brown has broken his promise to prevent the creation of a European Union super-president, the Conservatives have claimed, as the new treaty comes under fresh scrutiny this week.A Government White Paper on the European Treaty, published in July with a foreword by the Prime Minister, pledged that any future EU president would be ruled out of simultaneously holding the powerful job of European Commission president. But the final treaty text, agreed by Mr Brown in Lisbon last month, allows one person to hold both posts, creating the risk that power will be further centralised in Brussels. The prospect of a new super-president is already being enthusiastically discussed by many Brussels officials. Tony Blair is among the contenders for the post, to be elected by Europe's leaders in late 2008 for a two-and-a-half-year term.

William Hague, the Tory spokesman on foreign affairs, has written to David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, asking why the Government has reneged on its promise. It is clear that there could be a new EU super-president, something Brown and Miliband promised would never happen, he said.Did they forget about their promise? Brown and his ministers have proved as poor at negotiating as they are at running anything. Labour is now running very short of public trust. While they continue to break their promise of a referendum on this treaty that trust will not be rebuilt.Mr Hague is concerned at the power one person would wield if the jobs were combined. The consequence of one person holding both posts would be an effective president of Europe, determining the EU's agenda, able to propose as well as being in charge of guiding through EU laws with real clout on the world stage, he said. The pressure on Mr Brown comes as Parliament's European scrutiny committee makes the unusual decision to publish a second report on the treaty, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

The committee's first report last month embarrassed the Government by concluding that the new treaty was substantially equivalent to the EU constitution rejected by the French and Dutch in 2005. Tomorrow, the Labour-led committee will publish a second report, casting a critical eye over the treaty negotiating tactics.

Full text of interview with Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, ahead of Annapolis conference. EJP Updated: 22/Nov/2007 17:19

The 65-year-old Javier Solana is EU’s High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy since October 1999. In July 2004he was appointed for a second 5-year mandate. Born in Madrid, the Professor of solid-sate physics entered politics in the Sixties when he joined the Spanish Socialist party. After being elected at the Parliament, he held various posts in the Spanish government, notably as Minister for Culture, Minister for Education and Science and in 1992 Minister for Foreign Affairs. In 1995 he was named secretary general of NATO.

EJP: Are you more optimistic about the Annapolis meeting than before your Middle East trip?

Javier Solana: During my recent trip to the Middle East, I met Egyptian, Palestinian and Israeli leaders and in my discussions with them I gained the clear impression that although it will be very difficult, it is possible for the international meeting in Annapolis to launch a bilateral negotiation process that will lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state. It is doable. All leaders are fully aware that a failure at Annapolis will have dramatic consequences. There is a momentum towards re-launching the peace process; the international community is behind it, with the active involvement of the international Quartet and the support of the Arab League. All parties must do their utmost to ensure that the meeting has a successful outcome because failure is not an option. The period after Annapolis will be more important than the meeting itself and it will be crucial to have a political follow-up, in which the international community will play an important role.

EJP: What was your report to the European Parliament this week?

Javier Solana: In my discussion with European Parliament Group leaders at a special conference they convened on the European contribution to the Middle East peace process, I briefed them on my recent trip, my impressions in the run-up to Annapolis and the role of the European Union in accompanying and supporting the Peace Process.

EJP: What do you expect from the Israeli and Palestinian parties ?

Javier Solana: We expect the parties to begin negotiating final status issues and to implement their obligations under Phase 1 of the Road Map in parallel. The Israelis and the Palestinians have to demonstrate their commitment to the two-state solution by taking without delay the measures needed to prepare the ground for the end-game. Israel has to freeze and then reverse its settlement policy in the Occupied Territories. The Palestinians have to demonstrate their will and their ability to assume the responsibilities that come with statehood, including the responsibility for security.

EJP: Which role should the EU play at the Annapolis meeting ?

Javier Solana: The EU will be present at the Annapolis meeting as a member of the Quartet. A number of Member States will also be present. In the run-up to Annapolis the EU has focused on creating the conditions that would allow for a successful meeting. At the meeting the EU will join the international community in supporting the bilateral talks between the parties and the final status negotiations. The EU is also ready to adapt its policies and activities in the light of progress in the peace process.

EJP: Do you think additional sanctions against Iran are still avoidable?

Javier Solana: In June 2006 the EU put forward to Iran a generous and comprehensive offer. Iran still has the option to re-enter negotiations on that basis. The international community and the European Union will continue to pursue its dual-track policy of working at UN level on measures to apply if Iran does not suspend its uranium enrichment activities and of holding out at the same time the June 2006 offer of negotiations on a broad relationship if Iran does suspend those activities. On 28 September 2007 I received a clear mandate from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, with the full backing of the 27 EU member States, to encourage Iran to return to talks on a long-term agreement. I have, as you know, been in regular contact with the Iranians in order to see whether we can create the conditions for starting these negotiations. After the 23 October meeting in Rome I hope to be able to meet the Iranian negotiators again very soon, preferably before I brief, at the end of this month, the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany on the outcome of my contacts with the Iranians.

EJP: What is your view on ElBaradei’s report?

Javier Solana: The international community has asked the Iranians to do three things to restore confidence: deal with outstanding issues relating to the past; implement the Additional Protocol, relating to the present; suspend their uranium enrichment activities in order to enter into negotiations for an overall agreement, relating to the future. The report by Dr ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, deals mainly with the first issues, relating to the past. This represents a modest step forward but leaves many issues unresolved. There was some progress in dealing with the past but I would like to see more clarity about the present and the future situation.

A FALSE PROPHET COMES FROM THE VATICAN ALSO AT THIS TIME.

REVELATION 13:11-18
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

REVELATION 17:1-18
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Holy See Insists That It Has Right to Speak
Says It Participates in International Community as Guardian of Man
By Marta Lago

ROME, NOV. 28, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The human being has dignity and a transcendent dimension, and this is why an independent moral authority, such as the Holy See, has a role to play in international organizations, says an official at the Vatican Secretariat of State.Monsignor Pietro Parolin, undersecretary for relations with states, affirmed this in a conference delivered Nov. 21 to a group of ambassadors and members of diplomatic corps gathered in the Argentinian Embassy to the Holy See. The gathering marked the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and that nation. The Catholic Church is the only religious institution that can enter into diplomatic relations and that interests itself in international rights, acting through the Holy See, an international sovereign subject of singular characteristics, Monsignor Parolin said.He explained that an adequate understanding of the Holy See, as such, requires two distinctions. First, one must bear in mind that the Holy See cannot simply be identified with the Church, as a community of believers. And second, it cannot be identified with Vatican City State, a geographical place that assures the freedom of the Roman Pontiff.

The Holy See is the Holy Father himself inasmuch as he is an independent, universal, spiritual authority, together with the organizations of the Roman Curia that collaborate with his mission, he defined. The Holy See thus requires a particular status, such as that given by the definition of subject sui juris, meaning the Holy See defines for itself its juridical organization and does not receive it from outside, and as such, can enter into relationship with other states. The Holy See currently has diplomatic relations with 176 states. It has a presence at the United Nations as an observer state, membership in seven organizations or agencies within the U.N. system, and is an observer in another eight. The Holy See also has observer status in five regional organizations.

Objective

The tenacious assertion of its own international personality and the petition of the Holy See to intervene in international policy debates in order to offer its contribution is far from an interest in safeguarding its own independence, underlined Monsignor Parolin. If the Holy See wishes to place itself as an independent interlocutor of the states and to express an authorized judgment about the problems that affect lives, it is because it thinks that it represents a dimension of man that, although decisive in the life of the societies, is not fully under the jurisdiction of the states, nor does it end in them, he said. There exists, the monsignor affirmed, something that goes above and beyond the material element. The key, he explained, is the dignity of man, which is prior to the existence of the state. Respect for this dignity is the thermometer of the legitimacy and justice of any legal norm. And “this dignity of the individual has as an essential element the transcendent dimension [of man], he said.

If man did not transcend the material dimension, there would not be sufficient reason for the respect of his dignity to be over and above national interests, observed Monsignor Parolin. This pre-existence and independence of the dignity of the individual, and more concretely, his transcendent dimension, is the ultimate justification for the existence of a sovereign moral authority independent of the states. As a consequence, the Holy See, in its international activity, without interfering in the realms and responsibilities proper to the states, proposes itself as guardian of the human person and religious liberty, Monsignor Parolin continued.

Action

The Vatican official said that working in the Secretariat of State, especially in the section for relations with states, implies having the advantage of a unique watchtower from which to observe and know the international reality, given that one is privy to a constant overall vision formed in part by an almost daily contact with the diplomats accredited to the Holy See.And guiding the activities of the Holy See in the international realm is what Monsignor Parolin called the binomial of person-truth.

The Holy See, he said, attempts to emphasize these concepts, making use of the very tools provided by the international community, such as the manifesto of the United Nations, which solemnly declares that the organization was established in order to save future generations from the scourge of war, in order to reaffirm the faith -- a key word -- in the fundamental rights of man, in the dignity of the human person, in order to ensure the respect for international rights and to promote social progress. The significant use of the term faith in the cited context, enabled the Holy See, in the last U.N. debate, to observe that the existence of a universal, transcendent truth about man and his intrinsic dignity was affirmed, [a truth] that is not simply a historic creation, but is rather a reality that precedes and determines all political activity, such that no ideology of power can suppress such truth, the monsignor recalled. And it is this dignity of the human being, he added, that determines the just balance of national interests, which can never consider themselves absolute, and whose defense should contribute to promoting the common good of all men.The Holy See emphasizes constantly that respect for the dignity of man, therefore, is the deepest ethical foundation for the search for peace and in the building of international relations, Monsignor Parolin affirmed. The lack of, contempt for, or partial adhesion to this principle is the origin of conflicts, of environmental degradation and of injustices.

EU faces raft of open questions over diplomatic service
27.11.2007 - 09:29 CET | By Mark Beunderman

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Even if the EU succeeds in ratifying its newly agreed Reform Treaty in all 27 member states, the bloc is braced for further political wrangling over how to get its act together on foreign policy. One of the more high-profile projects in the treaty - the creation of an EU diplomatic service - is likely to cause strong political tension even after the treaty is scheduled to be in force in 2009, experts predicted during the launch of a new report by the Brussels-based European Policy Centre (EPC) last week. The treaty says the newly created diplomatic force – officially called European External Action Service - will assist the EU's future top foreign policy official, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The newly-styled high representative will have a double hat and cover the existing posts of member states' foreign policy chief – currently Javier Solana – and the European Commission's external relations commissioner. Consequently, the EU diplomatic force will consist of officials from the secretariat of the EU Council (which is Mr Solana's office), commission staff as well as seconded diplomats from national capitals. But after the entering into force of the treaty - scheduled for January 2009 - it is likely to take years before the diplomatic service is fully up and running, as the treaty leaves several sensitive political decisions to fight over for EU capitals and institutions. The service is likely to employ thousands of staff - but its exact size and composition are still fully unclear, highlighted Wilhelm Schoenfelder, who until recently served as Germany's ambassador to the EU. What will be the share of member states, and how will be the share among member states? I don't know. These are all open questions.

Evident conflict

It will need to be high quality staff and we will need some high flyers from member states' ministries, said Brian Crowe, a former senior official at Mr Solana's secretariat, adding that commission staff are often not well trained enough in diplomacy. Putting this together is going to be a nightmare, Mr Crowe predicted. It also remains to be decided what institutional status the EU's diplomatic corps will have. There is broad agreement that it should not become a new institution but there is an evident conflict between the commission and the council on the precise settings of the service as both strive to preserve their respective structures and competences, the EPC report says.Staff rules are also an issue to be sorted out. Commission officials joining the service are used to high salaries and less used to regularly rotating posts abroad - but if they keep all their privileges this could cause the jealousy of flexible and less-well paid colleagues from national ministries.

Who will pay?

Meanwhile, national foreign ministries and the European Parliament are already worried that sensitive political and security positions will be prepared by the service behind closed doors and beyond their political influence - a concern which was highlighted at the EPC meeting. Mr Crowe, a former top aide to Mr Solana, said the service should have a confidential relationship with the high representative. Member states should not expect to see everything the External Action Service produces. You cannot run a foreign policy like that, he stated. Lastly, the cash for the whole project still needs to be scraped together. Up until now nobody has done any preparatory work for the budget, Mr Schoenfelder said, asking whether there is money enough in the EU's 2007-2013 or whether additional money is needed.

Preparatory work

The treaty says that preparatory work on the service should already start right after the signature of the document, scheduled for next month - and this could already prove to be a potential political minefield. Guenter Burghardt, a former EU ambassador to the US, warned that we have to make sure that there are no discussions taking place in the open air before the UK parliament has ratified the reform treaty and Ireland has held its treaty referendum early next summer, with both London and Dublin sensitive about foreign policy issues. But France, holding the EU presidency in the second half of next year, could cause upset by actively meddling in the preparations. On top of this, it is also not clear when the new high representative – who will make formal proposals on the organisation and functioning of the service once the treaty comes into force – will enter the fray. The new treaty is meant to come into effect in January 2009 - but a new European Commission - of which he or she will be a member - will be appointed only 11 months later, in November. I've heard that at least for the transitional period from January 2009 to November, Javier Solana will be in office, said Mr Schoenfelder, asking When will the decision take place – before the new commission takes office or only after? This is also decisive for the question when the service will start working, he added.

EUROPEAN UNION ARMY

DANIEL 7:23-25
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast (EU,REVIVED ROME) shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,(7TH WORLD EMPIRE) which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.(TRADING BLOCKS)

DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.

DANIEL 11:36-39
36 And the king (EU DICTATOR) shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS JEWISH) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.(CLAIM TO BE GOD)
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(WAR) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god,(DESTROY TERROR GROUPS) whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.

REVELATION 19:19
19 And I saw the beast,(EU LEADER) and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse,(JESUS) and against his army.(THE RAPTURED CHRISTIANS)

Sarkozy's defence vision casts doubt over NATO's futureby our Brussels correspondent Vanessa Mock - 26-11-2007

France's grand plans to kick-start a new era in European defence have sparked fears that they could undermine NATO. As EU peacekeepers prepare to head for Chad, President Sarkozy has called for more European military clout in order to lead similar missions elsewhere.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy

How can Europe have any political influence in the world and be a factor for peace if it can't even defend those who need protection? Mr Sarkozy recently pleaded to thunderous applause in the European Parliament. The French leader will make defence a key theme of his presidency of the EU next year, when he plans to boost its military capabilities.

More Europe, less NATO?

There's certainly no shortage of conflicts, be it Kosovo, Bosnia or the Caucasus, where more European involvement is needed and would be welcomed, believes Tomas Valasek, defence expert at the Centre for European Reform. But the majority of NATO states worry that greater French insistence for a bigger role for EU defence headquarters will ultimately undermine the North Atlantic Alliance.
NATO is already struggling to get its European members to contribute troops to its understaffed mission in Afghanistan. The fear is that this shortage will only get worse if more troops are pledged for European missions.

Nervous Britain

Britain, a key NATO ally, has already signalled its nervousness. Last week, it vetoed a deal on a long-term EU defence budget thereby blocking moves to improve military planning. The French move could also unsettle Washington which is still smarting from President Chirac's calls to challenge US dominance within NATO by bolstering European military capability.

EU mission to Chad

3,700 troops are due to arrive in December to safeguard refugees, civilians and aid workers fleeing Sudan's Darfur region
France is due to provide the backbone of the troops with contributions from the Netherlands, Ireland, Austria, Sweden and Poland There is currently a shortfall of 10 helicopters, a third hospital facility and other support assets. But his successor has reframed the argument by saying he wants to complement, not rival, NATO; Mr Sarkozy wants France to become a full military member of the Alliance by 2009.Europe needs to either start taking control in NATO or risk becoming insignificant there, insists Phillipe Morillon, a retired French general and member of the EU Parliament:
We have to stand alongside our American friends but not be subject to an American Empire.

French power-grab?

The French push for a bigger defence role both within the EU and NATO begs the question whether this is just a power grab by hyper-president Sarkozy. Personality certainly plays a part, concedes Antonio Misseroli of the European Policy Centre. But polls show that two-third of Europeans do support a more active EU foreign policy. And that means being able to threaten, if not necessarily resort to, the use of force to bring about peace.

The full package

The EU can offer a unique package when it comes to peacekeeping, adds Kernel Edmund Sarani from the Slovenian Defence Ministry:Our strength is that we work on economic development and judicial and social reforms whereas NATO is really just a defence alliance. Kernel Sarani also adds that there are areas where NATO's presence would be unacceptable, such as the Middle East and parts of Africa.
Despite his good intentions, Mr Sarkozy will have to work hard to convince his more eurosceptic colleagues to cough up the funds needed to turn the EU into a new military force. The reluctance has been painfully illustrated with the Chad mission which is now at risk because of a lack of helicopters. France will have to make clear that if Europe really wants to get serious about defence, it has to get serious about paying for it.

Spanish King Juan Carlos calls to strengthen OSCE profile
Posted : Wed, 21 Nov 2007 12:55:02 GMT Author : DPA

Vienna - Spanish King Juan Carlos on Wednesday praised the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for its perseverance in fighting terrorism and preserving security in Europe. The Spanish king was in Vienna to inaugurate the organization's new headquarters in the centre of the Austrian capital. Spain currently holds the annually-rotating chairmanship of the OSCE. Since 1975, the history of the OSCE has been that of ongoing negotiations, of an open dialogue that serves a community of values which has constituted a cornerstone of Europe's shared security, and a stimulus for greater democratization on the part of participating states, Juan Carlos told ambassadors from OSCE member states at a formal luncheon.

Challenges remained considerable, the king said, ranging from stability in the Balkans, the fight against terrorist barbarity to respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Juan Carlos stressed Spain's focus on the fight against terrorism. The OSCE's focus on human rights had in the past repeatedly triggered criticism, in particular from Russia and other former Soviet republics. The OSCE's election monitoring arm ODIHR last week announced it had to pull back from monitoring the December 2 Russian parliamentary elections on grounds of unprecedented restrictions by Russian authorities. From November 28 - 30 the OSCE will hold its annual ministerial council in Madrid. With its 56 member states, the OSCE is the world's largest regional security organization.

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

DOCTOR DOCTORIAN FROM ANGEL OF GOD
then the angel said, Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Weak dollar a problem for world economy - EU president Mon Nov 26

MADRID (AFP) - The dollar's weakness is a problem for the world economy while the euro's strength reflects confidence in the European economy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in an interview published Monday. The fact that the euro reached such a level reflects the confidence in the European economy.., he told the Cinco Dias newspaper. What is a problem, without any doubt, is the weakness of the dollar. That concerns certain sectors of the economy, not only European, but in the world, he said. The interview took place on November 20, when the euro was around 1.47 dollars, the paper said.On Friday, the euro neared the 1.50 dollars for the first time after reaching a fresh historic high of 1.4967 against the US currency, which is suffering from expectations of slower economic growth and more rate cuts. Early Monday, the dollar was at 1.4808 euros.Barroso said he had total respect for the independance of the European Central Bank and total support for the ECB's reaction to the recent turbulence on financial markets. The bank has carried out several high-profile and controversial operations since financial markets were hit by turbulence following the collapse of the US market for high risk mortgages. The moves were aimed at ensuring that credit markets crucial to the global economy functioned smoothly.Barroso rejected suggestions that the strong euro was hurting European exports. The argument about the damage to exports caused by the level of the euro is not still valid, he said.German exports are very high, which indicates that there are other factors, in addition to the exchange rate, that have an influence, he said.It is with China that we have a trade balance problem.

A troika of the eurozone's economic policy chiefs -- ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet, chairman of the Eurogroup of finance ministers Jean-Claude Juncker and EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia -- are to visit Beijing on Tuesday to discuss China's booming exports and state-controlled exchange rates.

MR. PRESIDENT: DON'T DIVIDE JERUSALEM
Natan Sharansky launches campaign to protect the Holy City, briefs Joshua Fund supporters on importance of evangelical Christians joining with Jewish groups on this sensitive issue.
By Joel C. Rosenberg

(Washington, D.C., November 26, 2007) -- The Bush administration's much-anticipated and highly-controversial Arab-Israeli peace conference opens tomorrow in Annapolis, Maryland. A great deal is at stake. The most contentious issue on the table: the future of Jerusalem. The government of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is talking openly about the possibility of dividing the holy city and giving part of it to the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority.

This would be a mistake of colossal proportions. It would not send a message of goodwill and peace to Israel's enemies, as Olmert and his advisors hope. Rather, it would invite more attacks by radical Islamic jihadists who want all of Jerusalem, not just part of it. What's more, talk of dividing Jerusalem fuels the apocalyptic, genocidal ambitions of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his colleagues who believe Israel's day of judgment is coming and that Shia Muslims are destined to annihilate Judeo-Christian civilization and gain control of Jerusalem for themselves, and soon.

Mr. President, don't divide Jerusalem. Don't consider it. Don't talk about it. Don't encourage others to talk about it. Doing so will bring war -- and a horrifying one at that -- not the peace that you seek. Rather, open tomorrow's conference by making it crystal clear that precisely because we want peace in the Middle East, the U.S. will not support any division of Jerusalem any more than we would support dividing Washington or London or Paris or Moscow with our enemies or our neighbors.

To stop Olmert, former Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Natan Sharansky last week launched a multi-million campaign to keep Jerusalem the eternal, undivided capital of the Jewish State. What's more, Sharansky is calling not only on the Jewish community worldwide to stand with him, but is also reaching out to evangelical Christians. On November 8th at the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem, Sharansky briefed a Joshua Fund breakfast my colleagues and I organized with some 52 evangelical business and ministry leaders from the U.S., Canada, Germany and Australia. He made a powerful case for the centrality of Jerusalem in Jewish life and the reason Christians and Jews need to work together, shoulder to shoulder, to keep the city from being divided. As someone who helped Sharansky launch his first campaign to protect Jerusalem in September 2000, I join him again in calling on Christians all over the world to join his organization, One Jerusalem, and to sign his Jerusalem Petition, which reads:

United Jerusalem Petition

* I support a unified Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, to ensure free and open access for all people to the holy sites of the three major religions - Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
* I support a unified Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, as an expression of the unique relationship between the Jewish People and its eternal capital.
* I support a unified Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, so as never to return to the dark period of 1947-67, when Arab control over an artificially divided Jerusalem meant religious persecution, desecration of holy sites, and wanton destruction.
* I support a unified Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, according to the current municipal boundaries, set in the wake of Israel's defensive 1967 Six Day War.
* I support a unified Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, where Jews may enjoy the right to pray on the Temple Mount, the holiest site in the Jewish world.

AFTER ANNAPOLIS: WHAT NOW FOR ARAB-ISRAELI PEACE?
The President should visit Israel soon and address the Knesset in Jerusalem.By Joel C. Rosenberg NOV 28,07

(Washington, D.C., November 28, 2007) -- How should we assess the Annapolis conference? First, the good news:

* President Bush, to his great credit, is doing everything he possibly can to keep another horrible war from breaking out in the epicenter. I don't think in the end he will be successful, but I strongly applaud him for trying. He is following the words of Jesus, "Blessed are the peacemakers." With great difficulty, he brought together senior leaders from almost 50 countries -- including Syria, including the head of the Arab League, and including the Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference -- in the hopes of jump-starting a new dialogue for peace. I, for one, am grateful for his efforts.

* The U.S. emerged once again as a global agenda-setter, working hard to build a global alliance of moderate, peaceful, reformer Muslim leaders against the radical Islamic jihadist leaders that Iran is trying to pull together into an alliance against Israel and the West.

* Syria's participation in the Annapolis conference, which infuriated Iran, was particularly welcome. Tensions along the Golan Heights are running high. War clouds between Damascus and Jerusalem are clearly building. The fact that Syria was willing to meet in a diplomatic setting like this is good news. It may not ultimately be enough to prevent a war, but it is still a welcome development.

* The Israelis and the Palestinians are going to begin regular peace talks beginning December 12. This, too, is good -- though Prime Minister Olmert must strongly and firmly insist from the outset that talks absolutely cannot continue if southern Israeli towns like Sderot continue to be hit by rockets and mortars. The shelling must stop immediately. The first provision of the Road Map to Peace was Israeli security. Nothing else should be discussed until the border is quiet.

* President Bush did not publicly pressure Olmert to divide Jerusalem, and Olmert did not publicly immediately put Jerusalem on the table. This, too, is good, though I suspect it's only temporary. Still, let's take one day at a time.

Now, the bad news:

* A process is now in place that will, in fact, steadily and dramatically increase international pressure on Israel to give up something tangible (land, sovereignty) for something historically elusive, at best (recognition by the Islamic world and, of course, peace). If Israel is not careful, she could end up feeling forced to give away the store.

* We know by his previous statements and those of his advisors that Prime Minister Olmert is already disposed to give away nearly all of the Biblical heartland of Judea and Samaria, commonly known as the West Bank, as well as up to half of Jerusalem. He is going to have plenty of opportunities to thus respond to this growing international pressure in the weeks and months ahead. This is a serious concern.

* It is not clear that Mr. Olmert has learned the lessons of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 or her withdrawal from Gaza in 2005. Rather than Israel receiving recognition and peace in return for such land giveaways, the radical jihadist group Hamas took over Gaza and is steadily consolidating its power in the West Bank. What's more, Israel was attacked by some 4,000 rockets and missiles from Lebanon in 2006 and by more than 2,500 rockets and mortars from Gaza over the past two years. Land for peace worked with Egypt in 1979. Israel did not have to give up land for peace with Jordan in 1994, and that peace treaty has held. Is there evidence that giving up land will bring about true and lasting peace with the Palestinians in 2007 or 2008? Sadly, no.

* The very fact that the Israelis are talking about giving up land and dividing Jerusalem is a sign of blood in the water to her enemies, not a good thing when you're surrounded by sharks. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is already organizing a conference of terrorists as an alternative to Annapolis. He and his genocidal cronies will do everything they can to sabotage any prospect for peace, however slim, and then say, See, we told you so! Now it's time for war. Ahmadinejad sees Olmert and his government as weak, exhausted, and doomed to collapsed. He said as much yesterday after a cabinet meeting in Tehran. It is impossible that the Zionist regime will survive, Ahmadinejad insisted. Collapse is in the nature of this regime because it has been created on aggression, lying, oppression and crime. Moreover, Ahmadinejad believes the winds of history are at his back. He believes he is doing Allah's will to obliterate Israel and annihilate Judeo-Christian civilization as we know it. Annapolis will very likely serve as a catalyst to him to get his nuclear weapons program complete, take care of Israel once and for all, to bring about the global carnage and chaos necessary to usher in the coming of the Mahdi.

* Russia has announced that it is going to host a post-Annapolis summit soon. President Vladimir Putin can't stand the notion that President Bush has emerged in recent years as the game-changer in the Middle East. Putin wants that role for himself. The difference is Bush wants to support the Reformers, while Putin is siding with the Radicals. We must watch carefully to see how Putin reacts to Annapolis and what new initiatives he might try to put on the table. One possibility: a Middle East nuclear weapons-free zone that would seek to turn the world's attention away from Iran and put the spotlight on disarming Israel.

Where do we go from here?

* Let me start by saying I believe the Israeli public sincerely wants peace with the Palestinians. They sincerely want the Palestinian people to run their own affairs, govern their own lives, raise their children in peace and safety, and have a growing economy that can bless and benefit everyone in the region. I wholeheartedly share this desire.

* That said, we must be clear: Hamas does not want peace with Israel. Hamas wants what Iran wants: the annihilation of Israel. And Hamas is calling the shots in the West Bank and Gaza. Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (aka, Abu Mazen) is a weak figurehead right now. His Fatah/PLO organization is withering beneath him. It may not be long before it completely collapses and Hamas takes full control in the West Bank as it has in Gaza. Should Israel really be negotiating with terrorists? Should we really risk putting the Christian holy sites of Jerusalem under the control of radical Islamic jihadists. Look what's happening to Christians in Gaza. They are being attacked, harassed, persecuted and even martyred. Muslims who don't subscribe to the full Hamas agenda have been slaughtered on the streets of Gaza. Journalists are being kidnapped there. Under no circumstances should such a fanatical group of people be allowed to control the West Bank or any piece of Jerusalem. It is insane to think otherwise.

* President Bush should, therefore, take an historic trip to Israel soon and address the Israeli Knesset (parliament) in Jerusalem. He should make clear to the Islamic world that the U.S. stands with Israel and that we will do nothing to compromise her safety or security.

* The President and Congress should also make it clear that the U.S. considers Jerusalem the eternal, undivided capital of the Jewish State of Israel. We should move our Embassy there immediately. This would send a clear and powerful message to Israel's enemies that Jerusalem is not a Thanksgiving turkey to be carved up, slice by slice.

* We should recruit more people to sign Natan Sharansky's online petition to protect Jerusalem and keep it unified. See below to visit www.onejerusalem.org.

* Evangelical Christians must obey Psalm 122:6 to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Such prayers are needed as much as ever. The Joshua Fund is seeking to mobilize 100,000 partners around the globe to pray knowledgeably and consistently for peace in the region and to get our Flash Traffic geopolitical updates. We've gone from 3,000 to 39,000 such partners in the last year. If you know someone who would like to sign up for Flash Traffic, please forward this email to them and encourage them to get onboard.

* We also need to mobilize evangelical Christians to provide even more humanitarian relief supplies to poor and needy Israelis, Palestinians, and Lebanese, and to preposition more supplies in the region ahead of coming wars. This year, we've sent nearly $2 million worth of relief supplies into the region to care for needy Jews and Arabs, but so much more needs to be done. That's what The Joshua Fund's Operation Epicenter is all about. Find out more and consider getting involved at www.joshuafund.net.

What Happens after Annapolis
November 28, 2007
Dear Friend of Israel,

At yesterday's meeting between Israeli and Palestinian leaders at Annapolis, Maryland, both parties expressed the determination to bring an end to bloodshed, suffering and decades of conflict between our peoples and agreed to vigorous, ongoing and continuous negotiations aimed at ending their age-old conflict.A wide range of opinion has been expressed about what happened at Annapolis, some of it reservedly optimistic, some harshly critical. In order to help you better understand what happened, we’ve assembled a collection of news, opinion, and official documents. I hope you’ll take some time today to read them, as what happened at Annapolis may well have great impact on Israel’s future.

Read the official documents news, stories, and opinions

Amid the differences of opinion, I believe there are certain principles those of us who love Israel can agree on as prerequisites to lasting peace. Israel must not be forced by the U.S. or any other party to make unwarranted concessions, especially those that could jeopardize her security. Israel must remain the Jewish state, even as she provides freedom and equality for her Arab citizens. Cessation of Palestinian terror attacks against Israel is non-negotiable.Whether or not the Annapolis conference will lead to a final agreement that respects these requirements and Israel’s need for peace and security remains to be seen. For now, it is our duty to remain informed, and follow the news closely. And, of course, let us continue our fervent prayers for wisdom and strength for Israel’s leaders and for the safety of the Israeli people and, as ever, for the peace of Jerusalem.

With prayers for shalom, peace,
Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein
President International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.

U.S. announces new Mideast security envoy By Sue Pleming and Adam Entous Wed Nov 28, 4:26 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday named retired Marine Gen. James Jones as her special envoy for Middle East security, focusing on Palestinian and Israeli security issues. Building security in the Middle East is the surest path to making peace in the Middle East and General Jones is the best individual to lead our efforts in this essential endeavor, said Rice, with Jones at her side.Jones, a general schooled in diplomacy who was NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe until 2006, takes on the job following the U.S.-hosted Middle East conference in Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday that revived Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.Rice said Israelis must be confident that a Palestinian state would increase their security.

He (Jones) will work with Israelis and Palestinians on the full range of issues and he will work to strengthen security for both sides, she said.Jones, who has publicly critical of the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war and its chaotic aftermath, said he was looking forward to his new post.It is critically important. It's great to see our country play such an important leadership role and I look forward to doing whatever I can to assist, Jones said of his new job.Jones is expected to have a broader mandate than U.S. Gen. Keith Dayton, the U.S. security coordinator between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

REGIONAL SECURITY

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Jones would look at security issues not only between Israel and the Palestinians but also with others in the region such as Jordan and Egypt. We need an experienced leader who can address the regional security challenge comprehensively and at the highest levels and can provide the full support of our government to the partners as they work to meet their responsibilities, said Rice.At Tuesday's conference, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said their goal was to reach an agreement before the end of next year. But Olmert has said Israel will not carry out any future peace deal until the Palestinians meet their security obligations under the stalled 2003 U.S.-backed road map peace plan. Abbas has pushed the Israelis to meet their own obligations, such as freezing all Jewish settlement growth.Jones would not be specifically responsible for making sure that both sides implemented the road map, said McCormack.Jones, once a student at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington and a former commandant of the Marine Corps, served from 2003 to 2006 as Supreme Allied Commander Europe, the NATO alliance's top commander of operations. He oversaw NATO's move into Afghanistan in 2003, its first security operation outside traditional Euro-Atlantic borders.Blunt and media-friendly, he acknowledged last year that NATO had underestimated the likely resistance from Taliban insurgents when it moved into the guerrilla group's heartland in south Afghanistan, although he remained optimistic of victory.I will look to him for candid, independent advice and assessments of our efforts, said Rice. New Jewish Congress is Launched, Sets New National Agenda
by Hillel Fendel NOV 28,07

(IsraelNN.com) The New Jewish Congress was launched in Jerusalem on Tuesday - the same day as the Annapolis summit, whose defeatism it seeks to fight. Organizations, speakers and supporters from across the spectrum of nationalist, right-wing and religious thought were present at the Renaissance Jerusalem Hotel to take part in the opening sessions. Though many of the participants have been at many right-wing gatherings before, a sense of cautious enthusiasm that this could really be it was palpable.

The plenary session was chaired by Congress co-organizer Prof. Hillel Weiss of Bar Ilan University. Others responsible for organizing the Congress were Katy Cohen and Prof. Arieh Zaritzky, while a fourth co-organizer, Dr. Gadi Eshel, read aloud the Congress charter, entitled: The Eternal People in an Eternal Covenant in the Land of Israel. Excerpts:

G-d commanded the land of Israel to the People of Israel as a heritage - to settle it, to walk through it, to love even its dust, to know it, to observe the Torah in it, to long for it throughout 2,000 years of Exile. And when the time of the Return to Zion came, we were to ingather our dispersed exiles into it, take the barely-alive remnants of Israel and revive them upon it, raise pioneers in it, settle it with brides and grooms, children, families and communities, build upon it towns and factories, preserve it, rejoice in its rebuilding, build in it a national home that would be a light unto the nations - and to establish G-d's Holy Sanctuary in its heart, Jerusalem, Zion, on Mt. Moriah.

Everything is interwoven and inseparable - the tradition of Israel, the holiness of the Land, the unity of the Jewish People in Israel and abroad, defense and security, and life of creativity and deep bonds with the land.

Every community that we plant throughout the land strengthens the roots of the Eternal Nation's Eternal Covenant here - while at the same time preventing it from being bound by Auschwitz borders. Let us not fool ourselves: Auschwitz borders invite Auschwitz - not only for the Jews in Israel, but for Jews everywhere, and for all of humanity!

It cannot be that a temporary rule in the State of Israel will steal from the People of Israel its land, will conspire to expel them and give it away to a foreign nation - our bitterest enemy...

Any traitorous or anti-Semitic declaration that emanates from the second Munich conference, wherever it is held, has no value whatsoever. The Nation of Israel and its State must shred it into the trash bin of history.

Those who take upon themselves, seemingly in the name of the State of Israel, to commit national suicide, lose their right to rule in the State of the Jewish Nation. No Jew will abandon his home, give up his inheritance, freeze construction in his land or pave the way to Auschwitz borders in order to fulfill that evil decree.A group of people that take upon themselves, seemingly in the name of the State of Israel, to commit national suicide, lose their right to rule in the State of the Jewish Nation.

We hereby determine that IDF soldier and members of the Israel Police are forbidden to take part in the crime of expelling Jews from their homes and inheritance, of transferring parts of our Holy Land to our enemies, and endangering the Nation of Israel - in any form!

We call upon all those who are loyal to the Land of Israel and the Nation of Israel and every Jew who loves life, to arise, unite, remove the decrees from our people and from the cities of our G-d, and emplace Jewish sovereignty over the entire Land. In the words of Joshua and Caleb when Moses sent them to scout out the Land, Let us ascend and inherit the Land, for we can overcome it.

Rabbi Dov Lior

Kiryat Arba Chief Rabbi Dov Lior said that the Jewish People are required to both settle the Land and conquer it, and that the latter command involves military force, with all the associated risks. For many years we did not have the ability to fulfill this Torah commandment, but now we can - and so we must! We must not fear the threats of the evil ones, but we must rather persist, and not allow the weakness of our government to become a weeping for generations.

Rabbi Lior praised the Congress as a welcome attempt to prevent our destruction and to return to real Zionism. The Land of Israel is something that can unite all sections of the nation - but not when our students can go through 12 years in our educational system and then feel they have to take off for India to find themselves. ... We are in a situation that I would not describe as a dead-end, but rather one in which we do not currently see the way out. When in such a predicament, we learn from our forefathers that we must be strong and emphatic, as Joshua and Caleb were, about our rights to this Land!

MK Aryeh Eldad

MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union) took a slightly revolutionary approach: Yes, we had a large protest rally yesterday, but the tone was one of conciliation and loving everyone - to the extent that even members of the coalition government were able to come and speak of the dangers of Annapolis, even though they themselves are sitting in the government and building the scaffolding on which will be built the gallows on which we are all to hang, Heaven forbid! During the Disengagement, we called for civil disobedience, and it didn't happen; we called for refusal of orders, but only a few responded; we called to cut the fences in Kfar Maimon, but the public-minded leadership didn't allow it... When Olmert returns from Annapolis and will start paying his debt to the Americans by destroying outposts such as Migron or Assaf [43 and 17 families, respectively, both of them in critical locations north of Jerusalem - ed.], if we don't use the tools of this Congress to make a real fight and to capture the leadership, then we will become irrelevant. If we don't use the tools of this Congress to make a real fight and to capture the leadership, then we will become irrelevant.

Dr. Yossi Ben-Aharon

Arab affairs expert Dr. Yossi Ben-Aharon: The test of this generation is the Land of Israel. Uprooting a Jew from his home or his land is a crime against the Jewish people's link with the Land, and this is therefore the challenge we face... A true opposition, if we had one, would announce clearly that it is not obligated by whatever is decided in Annapolis. We must declare with a loud voice: This government's vows are not our vows, and its obligations are not our obligations!

Chabad Rabbi Shalom Wolpe

Rabbi Shalom Wolpe, a Lubavitcher who heads the Task Force to Save the Land, surprised some with his remarks: The Rebbe [Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson] said that saving lives is more important than the sanctity of the Land, and that if giving away the Western Wall would save even one life, we should give it away. But the bottom line is that giving away even a small part of the Land is itself dangerous to our national existence here, and is therefore forbidden... Some say that we are not Zionists. I say that if Zionists are those who wish to give up the Land, then we are truly anti-Zionists... If Olmert returns from Annapolis with a promise to establish a Palestinian state, we must establish our own new state in Judea and Samaria. We must fight Amona-style; we must refuse orders to expel Jews; and we must make it clear that if Olmert wishes to expel Jews from Judea and Samaria, no one leaves in one piece!

Attorney Elyakim HaEtzni

Attorney Elyakim HaEtzni, a long-time ideologue of the Yesha Council and now one of its strong opponents, said, Forty nations were invited to Annapolis - but one people who was not represented was the Jewish People! Yes, Israel was there, but not the Jewish People. I do not mean this lightly. Both the Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate spoke of the bonds between the Land and the Jewish Nation - but today, such a formulation would not be accepted by Israel's Supreme Court! The State of Israel no longer carries out reverse discrimination in favor of the Jews, as it was created to do, but rather expels Jews, wants Arabs on the Jewish National Fund board, and the like. Who will defend the Jewish Nation?! I say that if Zionists are those who wish to give up the Land, then we are truly anti-Zionists.

Gideon Charlop

Architect and Temple Mount expert Gideon Charlop: The Temple Mount and the idea of the Holy Temple do not appeal to the public; we need new, modern methods by which to 'sell' these concepts...

Botanist Mordechai Kislev

Botanist Prof. Mordechai Kislev of Bar Ilan University enthralled his listeners by speaking of the discovery of a grassy growth called smoke raiser. He explained that when it is added to burning incense, it causes the smoke that arises to do so in a straight column - precisely how the Talmud describes the smoke emanating from the incense in the Holy Temple. The discovery was made in Jordan, and he is about to depart for Egypt to corroborate reports of a similar discovery there.

JNF, Fenton, Davidi

Naftali Karni of the Jewish National Fund and Elad city planner Aya Greenfeld spoke of their program to sell the entire Holy Land as a historic and holy site, for both internal-educational and international-tourism purposes.

Jerusalem City Council member Mina Fenton discussed the dangers of missionary Christians in the Holy City.

Alon Davidi of Sderot reminded the participants that the ideals of the Land of Israel cannot be taught in a vacuum: My neighbors are mainly concerned about Kassam rockets landing in their homes; you cannot come and talk to them right now about the Land of Israel.

Prof. Eidelberg

Prof. Paul Eidelberg, speaking in English, said that the main problem in Israeli public life is its undemocratic political system: The MKs are not directly elected by the citizenry, and are therefore not accountable. Ben-Gurion himself realized this after about two elections, and deplored the system. The people of Israel are not apathetic; they're simply powerless! We are unable to have influence. We need just one person who will be strong enough to lead this revolution and effect the change! His impassioned speech swept up at least one woman, who asked, Why don't you lead us? The people of Israel are not apathetic; they're simply powerless!

Rabbi Yoel Schwartz

Rabbi Yoel Schwartz of Yeshivat Dvar Yerushalayim, a well-known expert in many fields of Torah who has written over 200 books on Jewish law and thought, shared several thoughts:

We must believe in ourselves and in our ability to effect change. This is why on Chanukah we are not permitted to light torches, but rather simple, individual candles - to show the power of the individual....

Those who live outside Israel must either move to Israel, or else perpetuate their bonds with Israel by setting aside a charity box in which they place a dollar or two every day for each family member, that they will then use either to fund their Aliyah [immigration], or for some other Israel-related use. This will be their daily reminder and link with the Holy Land...

Why is it that public trust in the law system in Israel drops from year to year? It's simply because it's not our Jewish law system; it's not what we received at Mt. Sinai, but something put together from foreign sources. We must revive Jewish Law in our modern State of Israel. But how can this be done? After all, the Torah says that a thief is punished only by paying back double - and one who commandeered property must only return what he took! What will be with all the gangsters under such a system? The answer is that in the Jewish system, children learn these laws from a very early age - first from the Torah, then the Mishna, then the Gmara. They are steeped in the idea that one must be more careful not to cause damage than to be caused damage. When a society is steeped in such values, there is barely any need for all these laws - because people simply don't steal! Only when a society is taught foreign values is there a need for such strict laws. The Torah, too, allows us to enact different regulations when there is a need...

The Seven Noachide Commandments must be taught, disseminated, and encouraged throughout the world. Both Christians and Moslems understand their importance; a leading Moslem sheikh in Italy is in favor, and I have translated my book on the importance of the Noachide Commandments into Arabic - and I have been told, though I don't know it for a fact, that two terrorist attacks have already been prevented because of this book...

Rabbi Dov Stein of the Sanhedrin

Sanhedrin secretary Rabbi Dov Stein said, It would appear that one is not allowed to ask Halakhic questions on the topic of state-and-politics, such as refusal of army orders, of any rabbi who receives his salary from the government - for he is, unwillingly, beholden to those who pay his salary, and therefore may not be able to answer correctly.

Other speakers included philospher Ohad Kamin, military historian Uri Milstein, Col. (ret.) Moti Yogev, Prof. Menashe Harel, Rabbi Yishai Baavad, former MK Sha'ul Yahalom, VAT founder Shifra Hoffman, Honenu legal rights organization founder Shmuel Medad, Rabb Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute, Moshe Feiglin, and many more.Respondents are asked to list the five issues or problems they feel require urgent attention and for which they would be willing to be active.

Tzibur Bnei Yisrael

An organization called Tzibur Bnei Yisrael (Community of the Children of Israel) was also present, seeking to advance its newest project, entitled The Top Five. Respondents are asked to list the five issues or problems they feel require urgent attention and for which they would be willing to be active. Issues could include corruption in government, widening socio-economic gaps, education, apathy regarding the Land of Israel, decreasing religious awareness, lack of Gentile awareness of the Noachide commandments, and more. The results will then be compiled, and persons will be asked to attend discussion and action groups on their pet issues. For more information, send email to info@tzibur.org.
